Resumen

Background: The wireless technology Bluetooth has rapidly become more commonly supported by electronic devices like mobile phones and PDAs. Several companies are currently developing Bluetooth broadcasting systems to use for marketing. This report is a result of researching the use of Bluetooth broadcasting for delivering information for more general purposes, how well Bluetooth actually works for broadcasting, and also on the topic of user privacy. Results: Broadcasting with Bluetooth did work with a few devices at the same time, since Bluetooth allows up to seven connections to one Bluetooth radio at the same time. By making a passive system where the user is the one which requests information, it also will not affect users' privacy. However, my research also found a few issues with the Bluetooth which might affect a broadcast, the most noticeable of them being the somewhat low transfer rate, an issue with device discovery not always working when a lot of users are doing device discovery at the same time. The fact that it only supports seven connections is also a limitation. Basically, while it is possible to use Bluetooth for broadcasting, it might be problematic to use it for targeting a large audience. Conclusions: Even with the problems mentioned, Bluetooth broadcasting provides quite a unique way of broadcasting, and with the newer versions of Bluetooth the issues mentioned might be less of a problem. Bluetooth broadcasting definitely has some potential.

In this work, I situate e-sports broadcasting within the larger sports media industrial complex, discuss e-sportscasters, and investigate the economics behind the growing e-sports industry. E-sports, often referred to as competitive or professional gaming, stands as a prime example of the merger of work and play. A growing body of literature has started focusing on this pastime turned profession. As more professionals enter the scene and audiences continue to grow, e-sports broadcasters look towards older models of broadcasting to inform their own style. This reapplication of former conventions stands in contrast to the trends in the larger sports media trajectory. E-sports broadcasting is largely informed by traditional sports broadcasting, yet remains unable to fully capture the success of the global sports industry. On-air talent, once informed solely by traditional sportscasters are now looking to their fellow e-sportscasters to create something new. Revenue streams which form the foundation of the sports industry are making their way into e-sports but not in the way that one might expect. Through a variety of qualitative methods, including historical analysis, interviews, and fieldwork, I have investigated e-sports broadcasting to better evaluate the role traditional sports broadcasting has played in shaping the e-sports industry. This work looks not only to what e-sports broadcasters have borrowed from prior sports media, but also where they have innovated.

Resumen
In Private Broadcasting, a single plaintext is broadcast to multiple recipients in an encrypted form, such that each recipient can decrypt locally. When the message is classical, a straightforward solution is to encrypt the plaintext with a single key shared among the parties, and to send each recipient a copy of the ciphertext. Surprisingly, the analogous method is insufficient in the case where the message is quantum (i.e. in Quantum Private Broadcasting (QPB)). In this work, we give three solutions to t-recipient QPB and compare them in terms of encryption key length. We examine independent encryption with the quantum one-time pad, unitary t-designs, and a new concept we define as symmetric unitary t-designs. Of these three, symmetric t-designs are the best choice when t is large, and these symmetric designs may be of independent interest beyond QPB.

Resumen
This thesis brings together work I have published in the last five years in academic journals and edited book collections. All the material presented in the thesis, much of it substantially rewritten, will appear in the trilogy I have been working on since my last published book, Radio, Television and Modern Life (Blackwell 1996). The organising structure of the thesis and its substantive concerns corresponds with that of the three books that will come out of it. The form and content of the thesis, and its relation to the books, is discussed in some detail in its introduction. Its fundamental concern is with human time which I have explored in all my writings since I began research thirty years ago, with my late friend and colleague David Cardiff, into the early history of the British Broadcasting Corporation. The medium of radio is time. Historiography deals with past time. The academic work of writing history on the other, and the temporality of radio and television on the one hand, are the first two themes of this thesis which shows that the orders of time in which they work are divergent rather than convergent. The third section of the thesis attempts their reconciliation through the recovery of meaningful time.

Resumen
In the years following the election of Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister in 1979. the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) came under increasing pressure to adopt more free-market principles in its operations. At the same time, technological changes meant that the traditional justification of 'spectrum scarcity' for the BBC's protected position became redundant. These two factors combined to make the BBC's environment hostile to its established broadcasting policy, which had been developed over five decades. This thesis analyses how and why the broadcasting policy of the BBC developed between the years of 1979 and 1992. It does so primarily through 28 in-depth qualitative interviews with people involved in determining and implementing the Corporation's broadcasting policy during this time, such as Directors-General, Governors, Controllers, and a previous Home Secretary. Also used were the BBC's archives service at Caversham, and an important document donated by its author, Sir John Johnston (reproduced as an appendix). This thesis shows how, prior to 1987, the BBC's broadcasting policy was nonresponsive to its environment, with the Director-General Alasdair Milne and his Board of Management refusing to adopt a strategy of change. The thesis documents how a series of 'transformative forces' gradually built up throughout the 1980s which finally enabled Milne's successor, Michael Checkland, to initiate a raft of necessary reforms. As a result, the BBC started to reflect its environment after 1987, through the twin strategies of camouflage and flexibility, which enabled the BBC to retain its most essential qualities, and put the Corporation in a very strong position from which to be granted another Royal Charter in 1996. The research makes a number of contributions to our collective understanding of the BBC. Prior to this, there has been no published analysis of the Corporation's social character during this time, in the style of Tom Bums' seminal work, The BBC: Public Institution and Private World (1977), and this thesis addresses this deficit. Similarly. despite the importance of the subject to the British public as both audience and voters, no systematic analysis of the external and internal forces shaping BBC policy during the Director-Generalships of Ian Trethowan, Alasdair Milne and Michael Checkland exists. Again. this is a deficit that this thesis addresses.

Resumen
This work examines the problem of providing reliable broadcast delivery of messages with minimal communication overhead in wireless networks. We consider two types of communication for broadcasting: one-to-all (the classical form of broadcasting where each node forwards the message to all its neighbours with one transmission) and one-to-one (each transmission forwards the message to only one neighbour at a time). We propose to reduce the communication overhead involved in both these forms of broadcasting by applying the concept of internal nodes. We simulate and analyze the performance of a family of three algorithms we propose for the one-to-all model using internal nodes. Neighbour elimination is used to reduce redundant rebroadcasts, and reliability is almost guaranteed with the introduction of RANA (Retransmission after negative acknowledgement). For the one-to-one model, in addition to applying the internal nodes concept, three additional algorithms P-broadcast, IP-broadcast and PI-broadcast are proposed based on the concept of planar subgraphs such as RNG (relative neighbourhood graphs). We compare the relative performance of these proposed approaches against those presented in literature. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Resumen
Public service broadcasting aims to serve the public good rather than private gain. Advocates believe that the work of broadcasting should be regarded as a public service for a social purpose. To achieve this purpose it should fulfil a number of ideals: cater for all sections of the community, service all geographic regions of a nation regardless of cost, be independent from political or commercial interests, educate, inform, entertain and improve the public it serves. The public service model was used as an ideal, to examine the performance of the Broadcasting Standards Authority in its first five years. It was found that for the Authority to be equitable and efficient requires: independence from political and broadcast industry influences, adequate funding, revision of the complaints system to improve public accessibility, and members with expert and specialised knowledge. Furthermore, there needs to be recognition of the principle that programmes should be assessed on individual merit, to increase the accountability of the Authority's decisions to the public The Broadcasting Standards Authority was instituted to retain public service broadcasting obligations in a deregulated environment. If the above issues are not addressed, then the credibility of the Authority's function as a public forum for the consideration and discussion of broadcasting standards must come into question.

Resumen
1992 marked a turning point in Nigeria’s broadcasting history as the country formally deregulated her broadcast space. However, it was not until March 2002 that the first commercial radio station was established in Rivers State, a broadcast environment hitherto monopolised by Radio Rivers. The coming of the first independent radio station in Rivers State in March 2002 was followed by the establishment of two other stations in October 2003 and November 2003 respectively. As important as these events in broadcasting in Rivers State are, however, media scholars have argued that in most societies where such change has taken place, public service broadcasters have tampered with their values of being an open space where individuals and groups can come together to be educated, informed, and entertained. This study investigates the extent to which the proliferation of commercial broadcasting outlets has affected Radio Rivers’ public service programming and scheduling. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, through in-depth interviews and analysis of the mandate and programme schedules, the study established that while Radio Rivers still maintains some public service values, its current programming policy is driven by the need to compete with the commercial broadcasters. This is evidenced in the decrease in the programme space allocated to current affairs and educational programmes on the schedule, (the genre of public service broadcasting), and the increase in attention to advertisements and entertainment programmes, (the genre of commercial broadcasting). The study also confirms the adverse effects of dwindling financial resources as forcing public service radios to compromise on their public service values, as majority of programmes on Radio Rivers current programme schedules are now geared towards attracting advertisers rather than serving the public good and interests. However, the study proved that it is not in all cases that the entry of commercial broadcasters into Rivers State broadcast space has undermined Radio Rivers public service values. Indeed, in leading to the expansion of interactive, news, and the diversification of entertainment programmes spaces on Radio Rivers’ programming schedules, the proliferation of commercial broadcasters has yielded some positive effects on Radio Rivers public service values and contribution to the public sphere. The study further highlights the need for some policy reforms at Radio Rivers, such as the introduction of licence fees, increased government funding and loosening government’s current control over the station. In addition, there is the need for the edict establishing the station to be amended to reflect the current trends in broadcasting in Rivers State, and above all to reposition Radio Rivers to sustain public good and public interests in its programming.

Resumen

In broadcasting, the assessment of video quality is mostly done by a group of highly experienced people. This is a time consuming task and demands lot of resources. In this thesis the goal is to investigate the possibility to assess perceived video quality with the use of objective quality assessment methods. The work is done in collaboration with Telenor Satellite Broadcasting AS, to improve their quality verification process from a broadcasting perspective. The material used is from the SVT Fairytale tape and a tape from the Norwegian cup final in football 2009. All material is in the native resolution of 1080i and is encoded in the H.264/AVC format. All chosen compression settings are more or less used in daily broadcasting. A subjective video quality assessment been carried out to create a comparison basis of perceived quality. The subjective assessment sessions carried out by following ITU recommendations. Telenor SBc provided a video quality analysing system, the Video Clarity Clearview system that contains the objective PSNR, DMOS and JND. DMOS and JND are two pseudo-subjective assessment methods that use objective methods mapped to subjective results. The methods hopefully predict the perceived quality and eases quality assessment in broadcasting. The correlation between the subjective and objective results is tested with linear, exponential and polynomial fitting functions. The correlation for the different methods did not achieve a result that proved use of objective methods to assess perceived quality, independent of content. The best correlation result is 0.75 for the objective DMOS method. The analysis shows that there are possible dependencies in the relationship between subjective and objective results. By measuring spatial and temporal information possible dependent correlation results are investigated. The results for dependent relationships between subjective and objective results are good. There are some indications that the two pseudo-subjective methods, JND and DMOS, can be used to assess perceived video quality. This applies when the mapping functions are dependent on spatial and temporal information of the reference sequences. The correlation achieved for dependent fitting functions, that has a suitable progression, are in the range 0.9 -- 0.98. In the subjective tests, the subjects used were non-experts in quality evaluation. Some of the results indicate that subjects might have a problem with assessing sequences with high spatial information. This thesis creates a basis for further research on the use of objective methods to assess the perceived quality.

Resumen
Wireless digital broadcasting applications such as digital audio broadcast (DAB) and digital video broadcast (DVB) are becoming increasingly popular since the digital format allows for quality improvements as compared to traditional analogue broadcast. The broadcasting is commonly based on packet transmission. In this thesis, we consider broadcasting over packet erasure channels. To achieve reliable transmission, error-control schemes are needed. By carefully designing the error-control schemes, transmission efficiency can be improved compared to traditiona lautomatic repeat-request (ARQ) schemes and rateless codes. Here, we first study the application of a novel binary deterministic rateless (BDR) code. Then, we focus on the design of network coding for the wireless broadcasting system, which can significantly improve the system performance compared to traditional ARQ. Both the one-hop broadcasting system and a relay-aided broadcasting system areconsidered. In the one-hop broadcasting system, we investigate the application of systematic BDR (SBDR) codes and instantaneously decodable network coding (IDNC). For the SBDR codes, we determine the number of encoded redundancy packets that guarantees high broadcast transmission efficiencies and simultaneous lowcomplexity. Moreover, with limited feedback the efficiency performance can be further improved. Then, we propose an improved network coding scheme that can asymptotically achieve the theoretical lower bound on transmission overhead for a sufficiently large number of information packets. In the relay-aided system, we consider a scenario where the relay node operates in half duplex mode, and transmissions from the BS and the relay, respectively, are over orthogonal channels. Based on random network coding, a scheduling problem for the transmissions of redundancy packets from the BS and the relay is formulated. Two scenarios; namely instantaneous feedback after each redundancy packet, and feedback after multiple redundancy packets are investigated. We further extend the algorithms to multi-cell networks. Besides random network coding, IDNC based schemes are proposed as well. We show that significant improvements in transmission efficiency are obtained as compared to previously proposed ARQ and network-coding-based schemes.

Paiam, Mohammad Reza. "In-theatre infrared audio broadcasting". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6695.

Texto completo
Resumen
Several factors have to be analyzed before designing an appropriate communication system for in-theatre IR multi-channel audio broadcasting. The infrared channel characteristics for the in-theatre propagation environment are examined and a suitable IR transmission configuration is suggested. The free-space IR transmission has a simple channel model which simplifies the analysis. The CD digital audio technology which provides advanced digital signal processing techniques at a relatively low cost is a strong candidate for use in the system. However, the channel coding used in the CD system (known as EFM) has a high redundancy which results in a performance degradation. A more suitable channel coding scheme (which is a version of 8B10B channel modulation) is designed and simple implementations for the corresponding coder and decoder are given. The receiver design for an indoor non-directional IR communication system requires an approach different from that commonly employed in optical fibre communications. A signal-to-noise ratio analysis is carried out and a simple strategy for the receiver design is proposed. A link power budget calculation is performed to find the required transmitted optical power. Also, it is shown analog FM requires much higher transmitted optical power to provide the performance achieved by the CD-based digital audio system in the in-theatre IR audio broadcasting. Finally, a simulation is carried out to investigate the effects of the multipath dispersion on the performance of the system.

Resumen
This thesis proposes a complete framework of an end-to-end transmission of stereo video to mobile devices using DVB-H. Block diagram of the system is presented and operations conducted on the video at each layer are explained. Parameters and methodologies that may make a robust transmission possible are discussed. The transmission performance is analyzed in terms of error robustness under various coding methods, prediction structures, layering and protection strategies for different contents and channel conditions. It also investigates the effect of rate allocation between video quality and protection over robust transmission in erroneous environment. This works provides directive conclusions on the selection of the mentioned parameters and methods.

Resumen
The thesis deals with channel coding theory applied to upper layers in the protocol stack of a communication link and it is the outcome of four year research activity. A specific aspect of this activity has been the continuous interaction between the natural curiosity related to the academic blue-sky research and the system oriented design deriving from the collaboration with European industry in the framework of European funded research projects. In this dissertation, the classical channel coding techniques, that are traditionally applied at physical layer, find their application at upper layers where the encoding units (symbols) are packets of bits and not just single bits, thus explaining why such upper layer coding techniques are usually referred to as packet layer coding. The rationale behind the adoption of packet layer techniques is in that physical layer channel coding is a suitable countermeasure to cope with small-scale fading, while it is less efficient against large-scale fading. This is mainly due to the limitation of the time diversity inherent in the necessity of adopting a physical layer interleaver of a reasonable size so as to avoid increasing the modem complexity and the latency of all services. Packet layer techniques, thanks to the longer codeword duration (each codeword is composed of several packets of bits), have an intrinsic longer protection against long fading events. Furthermore, being they are implemented at upper layer, Packet layer techniques have the indisputable advantages of simpler implementations (very close to software implementation) and of a selective applicability to different services, thus enabling a better matching with the service requirements (e.g. latency constraints). Packet coding technique improvement has been largely recognized in the recent communication standards as a viable and efficient coding solution: Digital Video Broadcasting standards, like DVB-H, DVB-SH, and DVB-RCS mobile, and 3GPP standards (MBMS) employ packet coding techniques working at layers higher than the physical one. In this framework, the aim of the research work has been the study of the state-of-the-art coding techniques working at upper layer, the performance evaluation of these techniques in realistic propagation scenario, and the design of new coding schemes for upper layer applications. After a review of the most important packet layer codes, i.e. Reed Solomon, LDPC and Fountain codes, in the thesis focus our attention on the performance evaluation of ideal codes (i.e. Maximum Distance Separable codes) working at UL. In particular, we analyze the performance of UL-FEC techniques in Land Mobile Satellite channels. We derive an analytical framework which is a useful tool for system design allowing to foresee the performance of the upper layer decoder. We also analyze a system in which upper layer and physical layer codes work together, and we derive the optimal splitting of redundancy when a frequency non-selective slowly varying fading channel is taken into account. The whole analysis is supported and validated through computer simulation. In the last part of the dissertation, we propose LDPC Convolutional Codes (LDPCCC) as possible coding scheme for future UL-FEC application. Since one of the main drawbacks related to the adoption of packet layer codes is the large decoding latency, we introduce a latency-constrained decoder for LDPCCC (called windowed erasure decoder). We analyze the performance of the state-of-the-art LDPCCC when our decoder is adopted. Finally, we propose a design rule which allows to trade-off performance and latency.

Resumen
In this thesis an OFDM/ OQAM based system for the next generation terrestrial digital broadcasting standard is proposed and its performance, in terms of spectral efficiency, is compared to OFDM-CD3 performance. As far as coding is concerned, LDPC and BCH codes have been utilized, synchronization and channel estimation have been performed by a superimposed technique and a one tap MMSE equalization scheme has been adopted. As shown by simulation results, an improvement of more than 13% is achieved by OFDM/OQAM system, confirming, in a practical system, the expectation of a significant spectral efficiency improvement.

This thesis presents a case study of the Special Broadcasting Service documenting the broadcasting challenges posed by user-generated content initiatives and the work-place approach to strategies for participation. Using the action research method, the project findings reveal that limitations to resources and funding determined the scope for innovation and that the practice of executive editorial control over content was considered fundamental to fulfilling the responsibilities of the public service mandate. Media workers were overwhelmingly positive about the enhanced productive capabilities of the audience and willing to facilitate moderated interactions, however the effectiveness of these initiatives differed according to the level of skills required. This thesis demonstrates how participatory initiatives can enhance aspects of the public service remit relating to cultural diversity, the servicing of niche interests, and broader social representation, and help reinvigorate the relevance of public service broadcasting in the digitalised media sphere.

Resumen
Competition in many market-driven media systems in advanced industrial countries can sometimes compromise traditional public service broadcast values such as programming for diversity, citizenship, minority interests and national identity. This study investigates the presence and effects of commercial-logic in a state-owned broadcaster in a developing country: the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation. Using indepth interviews and analysis of records on finance and programme schedules, the study finds overwhelming indicators of the presence of commercial logic, not driven by competition, but a commitment to provide a public service under deteriorating financial conditions. Distinguishing between the impacts of advertising and sponsorship markets on media output, the study finds contradictory effects of commercialisation. Some effects confirm some of the adverse effects of commercialisation such as heavy sponsorinfluence on programme content, self-censorship among programme producers who avoid injuring sponsors and producers paying more attention to sponsored programmes at the expense ofthe quality of some non-sponsored public service programmes. However, effects are not always contrary to public service broadcasting but may Indeed reinforce such broadcasting. Commercialisation in some instances has led to the sustenance of a range of non-sponsored public service programmes including programmes to promote culture and civic rights. In general, this study highlights the need to focus on what is realistically possible within the dynamics of the Malawi Society as a precondition for a proactive and elaborate strategy for commercialisation ofthe country's public broadcaster.

Resumen

The business environment has become more risky over the past decades. How do the companies prepare for the competitive environment and how are they working with risk identification and risk management, early warning system and blindspots in order to strengthen their positions on the market? In order to sufficiently investigate the subject, the following two problems function as the base of the thesis. What change drivers affect the industry, and what are the risks that these changes generate for the companies on a strategic, operative and financial level? How does the Swedish broadcasting industry work with business intelligence in order to strengthen their position towards their competitors as well as preparing for future changes in the environment in which they operate? The purpose of the thesis is to examine and identify the main factors affecting the broadcasting industry in Sweden, using TV3, TV4 and Kanal5 as reference points and how Business Intelligence is conducted and applied within these companies in order to strengthen their position. The method approach used is of an explorative kind since no previous studies were found on the subject. The information gathered is mainly of a qualitative kind using some quantitative data. The thesis has been conducted as case studies of the three companies. Several interviews with relevant personal within the organizations studied were conducted. In our final discussion we have concluded that the companies are efficiently identifying their risks and management action is taken rapidly when necessary. In contrast, the intelligence monitoring within the studied companies is rather weak according to Gilad’s theories of the Early Warning Triangle. The industry change drivers strongly affect the development of the industry and must be carefully observed in order to react proactively to the many risks the companies are exposed to.

Resumen
This research study has been carried out for the purpose of thoroughly examining and evaluating "liNE 1088 ", an interactive live cultural / informational TV programme, on the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CYBC, the State Channel of Cyprus), of which I am the researcher and presenter. The CYBC, as a public service institution, is the only TV channel in Cyprus to offer programmes of this kind on a regular basis. At this point in time, especially now that Cyprus has joined the ED, the people of Cyprus need to be educated and informed on many matters that concern them, especially those which are relevant to the multicultural dimensions of Europe, and the many ways in which they affect their life. The aim of the project is to examine ways and forms of improving the TV programme "LINE 1088" in order to maximise the viewers' participation in the programme in accordance with the EU's directives on public broadcasting. The objectives of the study have been, mainly through an extensive audience research, to ascertain the strong points and the shortcomings of the programme as a whole, to what extent it meets the expectations of its audience, as well as how its overall quality may be improved. For this research a "mixed method" approach was adopted in order to collect data., using quantitative and qualitative research techniques. For the purpose of achieving validity, I used multiple data collection techniques and a range of sources of information namely four different kinds of surveys: literature review, existing viewing pools and the review of five transcripts with findings from one research technique checked against the findings from the research of another type. The results of the project led to a set of recommendations for the overall improvement of my programme as well as to a working model (pro to-type), for the CYBC which could fit into a more global picture of broadcasting and thus motivate society to become more actively concerned with cultural socialisation A working model which should not be static, but embody the time dimension and gradually become polymorphic. This vision should have as broad a range as possible. This working model could become a manual for public television and contribute to cultural development and to a society of active citizens. The project is the product of lifelong research, learning and experience in the media and in culture. Being the fIrst of its kind in Cyprus it will, I hope, contribute to a new body of knowledge in this field and will also become a valuable tool in a wider context.

Bergeron, Alain. "NTSC in-band data broadcasting using OFDM". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/9377.

Resumen
The Teletext standard sends data during the VBI (Vertical Blanking Interval) portion of an analogue NTSC (National Television System Committee) video signal and has a bit rate in the order of 150 kbps. More recently, digital data broadcasting systems using a modulation scheme from the PSK family have been implemented. In these systems, the digital carrier is strategically placed within the active portion of the video signal in order to minimise the interference into the video signal. These techniques offer bit rates up to 525 kbps. This thesis introduces a new technique for transmitting data using the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation scheme, within the NTSC television signal. This technique allows a greater data throughput, while still maintaining the picture quality at an acceptable level. With OFDM, the spectrum can be shaped according to a specific set of rules, for example, the subcarriers that overlap with the NTSC spectral components can be set to zero. The data signal is inserted in the vestigial sideband of the video signal. The advantages of this implementation are that the shape of the data spectrum minimises the degradation of the picture quality and increases the noise margin of the data signal. Two approaches are taken to evaluate the performance of this system. In the first one, computer simulations are used to determine the available bit rate by varying the number of carriers. Bit error rate measurements are also done to evaluate the performance of the system when the data signal is combined with the NTSC television signal. In the second approach, the perceptual impact is determined, using accepted subjective assessment methodology, when varying levels of OFDM carriers are injected into the NTSC signal. The results show that the proposed system has the potential to offer higher data rate throughput than existing system, with negligible impact on the NTSC picture quality.

Resumen
This thesis makes a proposal for a Greek policy in the area of television broadcasting aimed at ensuring the country's ability to maintain a distinctive position in the European broadcasting market while protecting and promoting Greece's culture and language. The first part of the thesis presents the evolution of Greek legislation on television broadcasting and the status of programming content and quality from 1966, when the first television programme schedule was transmitted, until the present day. The European Community's legal framework and, in particular, the "Television Without Frontiers" Directive is analyzed since any Greek broadcasting policy has to abide by Community law. Reference is also made to the Council of Europe's Convention on Transfrontier Television. Finally, it is suggested that a Greek television broadcasting policy should focus on the formulation of different mandates for the public and private broadcasters, on the reorganization and strengthening of the public broadcaster, on the increase and funding of national cultural broadcasts and Greek language audiovisual works (as defined in the thesis), as well as on high-quality and diversified programming.

Resumen
This work takes as its starting point D Kendall's CANdle/bCANdle algebraic framework for formal modelling and specification of broadcasting embedded systems based on CAN networks. Checking real-time properties of such systems is beset by problems of state-space explosion and so a scheme is given for recasting systems specified in Kendall's framework as parallel compositions of timed automata; a CAN network channel is modelled as an automaton. This recasting is shown to be bi-similar to the original bCANdle model. In the recast framework,"compositionality" theorems allow one to infer that a model of a system is simulated by some abstraction of the model, and hence that properties of the model expressible in ACTL can be inferred from analogous properties of the abstraction. These theorems are reminiscent of "assume-guarantee" reasoning allowing one to build simulations component-wise although, unfortunately, components participating in a "broadcast" are required to be abstracted "atomically". Case studies are presented to show how this can be used in practice, and how systems which take impossibly long to model-check can tackled by compositional methods. The work is of broader interest also, as the models are built as UPPAAL systems and the compositionality theorems apply to any UPPAAL system in which the components do not share local variables. The method could for instance extend to systems using some network other than CAN, provided it can be modelled by timed automata. Possibilities also exist for building it into an automated tool, complementing other methods such as counterexample- guided abstraction refinement.
