Texto completoThis thesis aims to explain and analyze the historical, sociolinguistic and political conditions that have accompanied the implementation of the teaching of regional languages in France and more specifically the bilingual public education of Basque and Breton. It also addresses the issues that have marked this process and continue to arise today. The thesis is structured in three main parts. The first, "A Historical Overview," focuses on the period of the French Revolution; Then on the period from the 19th century to the 3rd Republic - Guizot and Ferry laws on the imposition of French - along with the Basque and Breton proposals for maintaining or helping regional languages in learning french ; the Vichy period – the marginalization of regional languages - and the period of the Fourth Republic were developed, with the commitment of Basque and Breton deputies to obtain teaching and recognition of their language in the public school, action which will lead to the adoption of the Deixonne law. The second part of the thesis, "From the Deixonne law to the bilingual teaching of Basque and Breton in public primary schools today (2015)", develops the positions taken by Jaures on the pedagogical, economic and social advantages integrated to the local language learning, local demands for the integration of Basque and Breton into school, which began in the early 20th century and continued into the 1940s. Then, starting from the Deixonne law, the progresses, insufficiencies of the socialist government on the question of language teaching and bilingual experiments in the Basque Country and Brittany. The third part, entitled "Sociolinguistic issues in the teaching of Basque and Breton today", demonstrates the politicization of the issue of regional languages in public schools : "the absence of a legal framework resulting in tolerance. The teaching of regional languages rather than an established right". Overall, this research shows that the school and the regional languages have had and still have today a long common history or at least intertwined, with changes in the understanding of regional languages. Nevertheless, despite the new social considerations with regard to the Basque or the Breton, there remain political blockages as well as organizational brakes. An old practice, the politicization of the linguistic question in primary school, which, conditioned by the hierarchical relationship between French and other languages, is still perpetuated today. Texto completoDictionaries are often seen a the place of the definitions, but very often the most important definition they give is not seen : the one concerning the language itself. Thus, while making their work, the authors have to make a selection of the words which will be retained and those which will not be taken in account. These choices rely on broader stances, related to their own convictions about what is "correct" language and what is not. The authors' convictions are themself influenced by the socio-historical context in which the dictionary is written, but they also shape the further definitions of the language, given the reliability granted to those kind of books. This work aims to seek the way in which the definition of breton language is given in the paratext (forewords, introductions, prefaces, postfaces) of breton dictionaries published between 1499 and 2015. In particular, we focus on some discursive processes such as identifications, differentiations, and originations, which are used by the authors in order to reconfigure the language's definition. A particular importance is given to the evolving use made of "Celts" in those definitions, and to the conflictuality in which they are set

Texto completoOne of the greatest changes that Western Brittany experienced in the 20th century is a complete change of language. In the space of a few decades, the Breton-speaking inhabitants of Finistère and the western half of Morbihan and Côtes-d'Armor ceased to pass on Breton to their children, thus endangering the future of their own mother tongue. This profound transformation, which today is often considered to be a natural phenomenon, nevertheless raises many questions. The purpose of this thesis is to try to determine the whys and wherefores of this process of linguistic substitution, which is not specific to Brittany. Schools played a fundamental role, and we will therefore begin by tracing the history of the imposition of dominant languages in the school environment, through practices such as the use of the signum in Latin schools, which later became the "symbole" and spread throughout Europe and beyond, as far as the former colonies of French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa. A case study conducted over several years in Brittany and Senegal will allow, thanks to the hundreds of testimonies gathered on both sides, to compare the methods implemented and their consequences. Comparisons will also be made with various places in the world, including countries under domination other than French, where similar methods have been observed. All of this data, historical and contemporary, in Brittany, Europe, Japan and Africa, will allow us to see that identical practices do not produce the same effects everywhere, the objectives pursued by the nation-state not being the same in metropolitan France and in the former colonies. As a matter of fact, the diversity of languages does not seem to be threatened in Senegal to this day, whereas the Bretons have been pushed to commit a real "linguistic suicide"

While previous studies analyse the precipitous decline in the number of speakers and the extreme fragility of the future of the language, thisthesis shows how the creativity of people associated with Diwan has overcome ideological and financial difficulties, and reaches through music , theatre and dance, a much wider audience than Breton-speakers alone.What sort of Breton is spoken at Diwan ? Who are these students who represent 1% of the Breton school population, and what are their artistic practices ? Who are the artists and teachers and what has been the evolution since the pioneers of the late 70s ? Creativity developed by teachers, volunteers, parents and students is all very well, but will it be sufficient to ensure a future for the language ? Drawing on studies by sociolinguists and Psycholinguists on numerous studies in Britain in the classroom and in extra-curricular field, but also in the Basque immersion schools Seaska , and european minority immersive schools too , the author shows that Diwan is a fragile "creativity machine" , which can not continue without a critical look at itself, a structured research, but also without more support from Breton society

Texto completoThe present thesis focuses on the conception of death in Breton writer Loeiz Herrieu’s story Kammdro an Ankou U – At the turn of Death, drawned from August 1914 to February 1919, as well as in Breton poet Yann-Ber Kalloc'h’s poems from his anthology Ar in Deulin – On my knees, written in Breton at the beginning of World War I. It fits within the scope of civilisation studies. First and foremost, the concepts of death and war are defined and illustrated through various sources and references, which give the reader insight into both men’s and their contemporaries’ mindsets. Besides, this thesis examines how Loeiz Herrieu and Yann-Ber Kalloc’h expressed their respective conception of death in their respective works. The critical comparison thus brings to light not only the very nature of the collective representations which influenced these works – especially those originating from the Catholic or nationalist, both Breton and French, imagination – but also to what extend the unprecedented conditions induced by the Great War forced these two men to invent new representations through their creation. Consequently, they gained a certain amount of individual freedom and a voice of their own, in this crucial moment of transition between tradition and modernity in society. Such a transition introduces the complete break of the development of individualism in European societies. In this perspective, the perception of Loeiz Herrieu and Yann-Ber Kalloc’h’s works improves the current understanding of the Breton folk’s state of mind at the beginning of the 20th century and of the reasons why Breton men accepted to go and sacrifice their lives on the battlefield in the name of France

Texto completoStarting from the parents’ point of view, this thesis in educational sciences studies the family transmission of Breton, in a context of linguistic revitalization that follows the almost total rupture of the intergenerational transmission in the 1950s. A field survey of Breton-speaking parents aged between 23 and 48 in 2018 forms the basis of this research and has made it possible to collect a large amount of quantitative and qualitative data from 50 semi-structured interviews and two questionnaires (450 respondents for one and 306 for the other). It highlights the diversity of family strategies for transmitting the Breton language, in terms of parent-child communication and the environment, ranging from strong, very proactive transmission practices to weak or non-existent transmission practices. It also highlights their dynamic nature, often in the sense of a weakening of transmission as the child grows up. The analysis of parents’ linguistic choices reveals the influence of many factors relating to the environment (family, school, work), the context of the interaction (spouse, child, presence of a third party) and the parent speaker himself or herself (language socialisation, gender, feeling of competence), which combine to form a unique configuration that may or may not allow for language transmission. The transmitting parents report on the educational, personal, family, cultural and political issues involved. The thesis concludes with a series of recommendations for a potential future language policy in favour of the family transmission of Breton

Texto completoThis research in sociolinguistics examines the relations between languages and social life from a particular case study: the actual place of Breton language in the Breton linguistic field, and more specifically, young child's educational bilingualism. Learning and speaking a language results from choices -familiar or personal ones, or social, or political, or economical ones, etc.-, direct or indirect, more or less conscious that intervene, in relation to individuals and situations, at different periods in life. Many parameters lead these choices and they are highly complex: among them, individual representations of the chosen language. For the young Breton child, learning Breton language does not stem from a personal's choice. Parents are the principal actors of these linguistic choices. Therefore, this work has considered the representations of this language, of its learning and their influences, present in parents' and children's discourse, as revealing the origins of a particular linguistic practice. 42 semistructured (individual or couple) interviews with the parents and 9 collective interviews with their children, transcribed, are used as a database for the different phases of the analysis. They allowed characterising parental discourse regime, linked with characteristic profile types, and they highlighted influences effects on children's representations. This approach, coming from a discursive material, confirms the interest of studying representations for the understanding of linguistic practices. Texto completoThe decade following the end of World War II failed to rebuild, in Brittany, the popular emulation that certain “nationalist” militants could have wished for around the question of the specific Breton identity. However, between 1954 and the turn of the year 1970, a real transformation took place in the perception that the Bretons themselves had of their own identity. This perception is questioned, redefined, it is structured and induces the design of tools which uses will later mark out the political, social and cultural demands that will result in the important post-1970 cultural and social revival. This national discourse, from a nucleus of Breton activists, will gradually spread to a large part of the Breton population, Breton speaking people or not. The relevance of the notion of nation to Brittany has long been supported, argued as well as criticized and fought in the context of a “one and indivisible’’ French Republic. The object of this research work is to shed light on the evolution of this notion, with regards to the analysis of an exhaustive corpus which only includes literary works in the Breton language written during the chosen period, whatever the places or the periods of writing and publishing. It will therefore be a question of defining the criteria of what makes literature a regional, national or international subject. This dissertation proposes to analyse these writings on what sometimes appears to be a simple attachment to the territory, sometimes to be the reflection of more emancipatory political approaches, akin to the wave of decolonisation that is overwhelming the world in this second half of the twentieth century

Texto completoOne of the major forms of oral literature in the Breton language – which includes songs, tales, proverbs and sayings- is the gwerz. This form of traditional song, passing on from one generation to another, most often evidences a historical as well as a fantastic character.Studying the language used in these songs helps highlight the existence of several standards or levels of language; indeed, while the dialectal mark of the interpreter generally makes no doubt, the presence of a form of standard Breton can also be noticed.In the early XIXth century, people in Brittany - similarly to what was taking place throughout Europe - started collecting oral literature in the Breton language. Most of the time they came from the lower rural aristocracy. Mme de Saint-Prix (1789-1869) was among these precursors. The two unpublished manuscripts which make the most part of her collection (MS 1 : 97 folios ; MS 2 : 45 folios) are currently kept in the Landevennec library

Texto completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the translation strategy oortekening (Afrikaans for “resigning” or “redrawing”) as it is found in the bilingual context of Breytenbach’s volume of poems Oorblyfsel/ Voice Over (2009). The term oortekening (retracing), coined by Odendaal (2011), refers to corresponding parts of the Afrikaans and English versions in the volume which differs semantically but which are alike phonologically and orthographically. The argument is made that, in the context of the bilingual layout of the volume, the translation strategy oortekening invites bilingual readers to take part in an interpretative game as they read the two versions side-by-side. It is further argued that currently there are not adequate theories in translation studies to describe and understand this interpretative play. This study therefore uses theories from outside translation studies to describe the translation phenomenon in this volume and in this way provide a theoretical framework in which the unusual nature of the translation of the volume can be understood. Chapter one, an introduction, is followed by Chapter two which gives an overview of the main approaches in translation theory, describing how the problem statement would be described and understood by each. The linguistic approaches which are covered includes structural linguistics, text and sociolinguistics and functionalism. The literary approaches include descriptive translation studies and more ideologically orientated approaches. Enquiry is made into which aspects of each approach are useful to explain the volume and which are not. Chapter three applies three concepts from outside translation studies to oortekening in the context of the bilingual layout of the volume: Pratt’s contact zone (1987, 1991, 1992, 1996), Bhabha’s in-between (1993) and Lecercle’s remainder (1990). These concepts are used to analyse examples of oortekening from the volume. In the last chapter the findings of the study are discussed. The relationship between the two languages in the volume is compared to the historical and current relationship between Afrikaans and English. The chapter ends with a discussion of the variety of possible further studies based on this volume and this study.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie ondersoek die vertaalstrategie oortekening soos wat dit in die tweetalige konteks van Breytenbach se bundel Oorblyfsel/ Voice Over (2009) voorkom. Die term oortekening is aan Pieter Odendaal (2011) ontleen en verwys na ooreenkomstige dele van die Afrikaanse en Engelse weergawes in die bundel wat semanties verskil maar fonologies en ortografies ooreenkom. Daar word geargumenteer dat die vertaalstrategie oortekening in die konteks van die tweetalige uitleg van die bundel tweetalige lesers nooi om aan ’n interpretatiewe spel deel te neem soos wat hulle die twee weergawes saam lees. Daar word verder geargumenteer dat daar tans in die vertaalkunde nie gepaste teorieë is om die interpretatiewe spel te beskryf en te begryp nie. Die studie gebruik dus teorieë van buite die vertaalkunde om die vertaalverskynsel in hierdie bundel te beskryf en om so ’n teoretiese raamwerk voor te stel waarbinne die ongewone aard van die bundel se vertaalaspek begryp kan word. Die inleidende hoofstuk word gevolg deur hoofstuk twee wat ’n oorsig gee van die vernaamste vertaalteoretiese benaderings en hoe die probleemstelling volgens elk van die benaderings beskryf en verstaan word: die linguistiese benaderings, vanaf die strukturele linguistiek, teks- en sosiolinguistiek na die funksionalisme; en die literêre benaderings, wat deskriptiewe vertaalstudies en meer ideologies gefundeerde benaderings insluit. Daar word ondersoek ingestel na watter aspekte van elk van die benaderings nuttig is om die bundel te beskryf en watter tekortkominge elke benadering bied. Texto completoThis research work considers reverse language shift in economy as a project. This involve defining a starting point and understanding how this situation came up. It is the aim of the first part which shows the evolution of breton language on several centuries, the appropriate scale to understand language evolutions. Then comes the environment conditions, three aspects are studied : language tools, numbering and level qualifications of the speakers in front of current supply and demand situation. Then, the last tool considered is the methodology and the follow-up of minority language revitalisation. The second part is dedicated to tensions generated in economy between the evolution speed of human activities versus numeric ones. Then comes valorisation of contemporary initiatives regarding language revival in companies. Two main aspects are considered : the possibilities offered by minority languages and managing human aspects linked to such initiatives. Last, the third section is dedicated to an experimental minority language revitalisation performed in the company of the author of this work, which allowed him to put face to face utopia and reality of such an initiative

Texto completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: Breyten Breytenbach's Afrikaans translation of William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus is a little known member of the corpus of Afrikaans Shakespeare plays. Published without annotations in South Africa in 1970 and performed in Cape Town in the same year, it has never been performed again and the text has attracted no academic review or led to any subsequent editions. However, situated in 1970 in the heyday of the Apartheid regime, the play's production broke attendance records in Cape Town and was accompanied by substantial public controversy. In this thesis, the author analyses Breytenbach's translation in order to determine whether the translator had an ideological agenda in performing the translation. The analysis is based on a preliminary discussion of culture and ideology in translation, and then uses the Skopostheorie methodology of Hans J. Vermeer (as developed by Christiane Nord) to assess the translation situation and the target text. The target text has been analysed on both a socio-political and microstructural level. The summary outcome of the analysis is that the translator may possibly have tried to promote an anti-Apartheid ideology by translating the play. The outcome is based on several contextual factors such as the socio-political situation in South Africa in which the translated play was published and performed, the translator's stated opposition to the Apartheid system, the choice of Titus Andronicus for translation and production, and to a lesser extent the level of public controversy that accompanied the target text's production in the theatre.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Breyten Breytenbach se Afrikaanse vertaling van William Shakespeare se Titus Andronicus is 'n min bekende eksemplaar van die versameling Shakespeare toneelstukke in Afrikaans. Dit is sonder enige annotasies in 1970 in Suid-Afrika uitgegee, en is dieselfde jaar in Kaapstad opgevoer. Sedertdien is dit nooit weer opgevoer nie, en die teks het geen akademiese kritiek ontlok nie. Die teks is ook nooit weer herdruk nie. Maar in 1970, tydens die toppunt van die Apartheidregime, het hierdie toneelstuk se opvoering bywoningsrekords oortref en dit is deur aansienlike openbare omstredenheid gekenmerk. In dié tesis ontleed die skrywer Breytenbach se vertaling om te bepaal of die vertaler 'n ideologiese agenda in die vertaling van die toneelstuk gehad het. Die ontleding word op 'n voorlopige bespreking van kultuur en ideologie in die vertaalproses gegrond, en maak dan gebruik van die Skopostheorie van Hans J. Vermeer (soos verwerk deur Christiane Nord) om die omstandighede ten tyde van die vertaalproses sowel as die doelteks self te ontleed. Die doelteks is op sowel sosiaalpolitiese as mikrostrukturele vlak ontleed. Two opposing approaches to beginning reading are used, namely the phonological and global approach, under which the whole word, whole sentence and whole language methods are classed. The whole crux of the controversy is situated in beginning reading as an explicit, intensive and systematic method of teaching phonics, as opposed to implicit beginning reading through discrimination of global configurations, augmented by psycholinguistic guesses within reading context. Arguments about the advantages and disadvantages of the opposing methods have been hurdled to and fro for decades without any discernible gain. The question emerged whether research on brain physiology with respect to language and reading, a relatively new field of study, could shed light on the foundation of an accountable method for beginning reading. Renewed insights to the controversial differences were gained, and brain physiologically accountable parameters as a base for a beginning reading method were framed from these insights.
Twee opponerende aanvangsleesbenaderings word in die skole gebruik, naamlik die fonologiese benadering en die geheelbenadering, waaronder die geheelwoord-, geheelsinen die geheeltaalmetode ressorteer. Die kern van die verskil tussen die aanvangsleesbenaderings le in aanvangslees as eksplisiete, intensiewe en sistematiese foneemonderrig, teenoor implisiete aanvangslees wat die waarneming van globale konfigurasies, aangevul deur psigolinguistiese raaiskote binne die leeskonteks, aanmoedig. In die polemiek om die beste leesmetode word argumente oor die voor- en nadele ten opsigte van die begronding van hierdie opponerende metodes reeds dekades heen en weer geslinger. Navorsingsresultate word eindeloos, sonder duidelike winste, met mekaar vergelyk. Dit het die vraag laat onstaan of navorsing ten opsigte van die breinfisiologie met betrekking tot taal en lees, 'n relatief nuwe studieveld, moontlik lig sou kon werp op die begronding van 'n verantwoordbare aanvangsleesmetode.
