Texto completoThe research deals with the acquisition process of works of art during the Late Republican Period (III-I century B.C.). Starting from the conquest of Syracuse, a great number of statues and paintings arrived in Rome to decor public and sacred buildings. According to some authors, the variety of statues and painting was evaluated positively. However, others considered those objects dangerous for a traditional roman customs. In the first part, I focus my attention on the modality of acquisition with more emphasis on the legal aspect. Indeed, during the military campaign and the division of the booty, morality in war has a significant role. Through the re-exams of the campaigns of roman generals, archaeological items will be take into account; although they are mostly known by literary sources. The second part deals with the growth of private artistic collection and with the spread of the artistic taste through the Roman society. Verres and Cicero were mostly inspired by the desire for Greek artistic works of art. However, the desire for luxury objects was supposed to be more widespread. The Antikythera and Mahdia wrecks show that the cargo was very heterogeneous. Some of these products were made for roman customers, others indeed are Greek original masterpieces stripped from Greek public buildings. The research aims to answer to this question: “How can we explain the presence of ancient bronze statues together with a “fresh” items produced by Greek Neoattic workshops?” For these reasons, in the last section I focus on the development of antiquarian market with a particular attention to the acquisition process of such objects.
