Resumen
From the 1920s on, popular music in Southeast Asia was a mass-audience phenomenon that drew new connections between indigenous musical styles and contemporary genres from elsewhere to create new, hybrid forms. This book presents a cultural history of modern Southeast Asia from the vantage point of popular music, considering not just singers and musicians but their fans as well, showing how the music was intrinsically bound up with modern life and the societal changes that came with it. Reaching new audiences across national borders, popular music of the period helped push social change, and at times served as a medium for expressions of social or political discontent.

Resumen
The Sino-Russian border, once the world's longest land border, has received scant attention in histories about the margins of empires. This book rectifies this by exploring the demarcation's remarkable transformation—from a vaguely marked frontier in the seventeenth century to its twentieth-century incarnation as a tightly patrolled barrier girded by watchtowers, barbed wire, and border guards. The book explores the daily life of communities and their entanglements with transnational and global flows of people, commodities, and ideas. It challenges top-down interpretations by stressing the significance of the local population in supporting, and undermining, border making. Because Russian, Chinese, and native worlds are intricately interwoven, national separations largely remained invisible at the border between the two largest Eurasian empires. This overlapping and mingling came to an end only when the border gained geopolitical significance during the twentieth century. The book demonstrates how states succeeded in suppressing traditional borderland cultures by cutting kin, cultural, economic, and religious connections across the state perimeter, through laws, physical force, deportation, reeducation, forced assimilation, and propaganda. It sheds critical new light on a pivotal geographical periphery and expands our understanding of how borders are determined.

Through the testimonies of civil administrators and security hawks, this chapter demonstrates the repatriation of nearly a million Rwandans from the camps was not the exorcism Paul Kagame had hoped for, but rather how the opposite was true. The failure to organize screening at the border meant that within months of the return of the refugees the RPF had to confront an insurgency that engulfed the country. With thousands of soldiers deployed in Congo, it could barely stave off the existential menace of the resurgent génocidaires. This context informed how the RPF responded to Kabila’s Katangization. For Kigali, its shrinking influence in Kinshasa was a disaster, as it came just when Kabarebe needed his authority as chief of staff to send Congolese troops to destroy the resurfaced rear bases of the génocidaires in North and South Kivu. The actual divorce was accelerated when intelligence reports began showing the unthinkable was happening: in Kabila’s attempts at escaping Kabarebe’s embrace, his advisors forged links with the génocidaires and supplied them with weapons. This was a point of no return in the security dilemma facing the liberation coalition. Paul Kagame gave the green light to proceed with a regime change strategy in Congo.

This article analyses the notion of the ‘the people’ in contemporary political theory. It explains that the people's authority is considered to confer legitimacy upon constitutions, new regimes, and changes to the borders of states. It discusses the attribution of ultimate political authority to the people and investigates how the people came to have an authoritative status. It also analyses whether the repository of the ultimate political authority is a collective entity, a collection of individuals, or both.

Lewis, Joanna. Women of the Somali Diaspora. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197619421.001.0001.

Texto completo
Resumen
This book is about Somali mothers and daughters who came to Britain in the 1990s to escape civil war. Many had never left Somalia before, followed nomadic traditions, did not speak English, were bereaved and were suffering from PTSD. Their stories begin with war and genocide in the north, followed by harrowing journeys via refugee camps, then their arrival and survival in London. Joanna Lewis exposes how they rapidly recovered, mobilizing their networks, social capital and professional skills. Crucial to the recovery of the now breakaway state of (former British) Somaliland, these women bore a huge burden, but inspired the next generation, with many today caught between London and a humanitarian impulse to return home. Lewis reveals three histories. Firstly, the women's personal history, helping us to understand resilience as an individual, lived historical process that is both positive and negative, and both inter- and intra-generational. Secondly, a collective history of refugees as rebuilders, offering insight into the dynamism of the Somali diaspora. Finally, the forgotten history and hidden legacies of Britain's colonial past, which have played a key role in shaping this dramatic, sometimes upsetting, but always inspiring story: the power of women to heal the scars of war.

Resumen
This distinctive and engaging book proposes an imaginative criminology, focusing on how spaces of transgression are lived, portrayed and imagined. These include spaces of control or confinement, including prison and borders, and spaces of resistance. Examples range from camps where asylum seekers and migrants are confined to the exploration of deviant identities and the imagined spaces of surveillance and control in young adult fiction. Drawing on oral history, fictive portrayals, walking methodologies, and ethnographic and arts-based research, the book pays attention to issues of gender, sexuality, age, ethnicity, mobility and nationality as they intersect with lived and imagined space.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Comparative Agendas Project (CAP) brings together data on government activities in over twenty countries, and provides a consistent categorizing system to understand when a given institution of government in a particular country took action on any issue of public policy. All topics are covered, comprehensively, over several decades, in some countries going back to World War II. Because of the open-data philosophy that animates the international network of scholars involved in the project and their meticulous attention to comparability and common data coding conventions, the databases of the CAP represent an unprecedented resource for the study of public policy across national borders. In this major new book, leaders of each national team provide the background and information needed for anyone to understand how best to make use of these newly available historical databases. Interested users will range from novice students of public policy to accomplished scholars, from interested citizens to professional journalists, political or partisan activists, and professional staff of legislative assemblies or national administrative agencies. The book’s sections include chapters introducing the CAP to a new audience, describing each national project, illustrating various cross-national uses and analyses that the CAP data allow, and concluding with ideas for further practical and research uses.

Matthew was first to introduce James I to his new English subjects, and this chapter examines how those early months set the tone for James’s rule. Matthew presented him as the legitimate ruler, sidestepping the thorny issue of Mary Stuart’s execution (for which Matthew had eagerly pushed). The borders were at heart of James’s plan for an Anglo-Scottish union, which explains why Matthew spun the regime’s response to key moments in the early years: debates about the union, the Hampton Court Conference, and the aftermath of the Gunpowder Plot. Matthew’s Puritanism and occasional criticism of James I and his consort, Anne of Denmark. meant that he sometimes came into conflict with the regime.

Resumen
This chapter argues that the presidential election of 1860 betrayed the ideological flexibility of westernness and conservative Unionism. The region increasingly divided as the war progressed, and the Ohio River—a nucleus of Union supply, contraband camps, raids, and other forms of violence—became more and more a perforated line within popular imagination. Conservative Unionists were swept into a quickly evolving contest in which they “Confederatized” the Border South, imposing a “Yankee vision” on Kentucky that was rooted in antislavery thought. Although most Lower Middle Westerners were slow to accept emancipation and black enlistment (and many never did), liberalizing war policies encumbered conservative Unionism in the Bluegrass State, further separating the antebellum West.

Resumen
Abstract This multi-authored volume is the first book-length critical examination of the ways in which libraries have been depicted in imaginative writing from the late Middle Ages until the present. After showing how depictions of libraries by Rabelais and Cervantes came to permeate anglophone culture during and after the Renaissance, the book shows in detail how representations of the library in fiction, poetry, and drama changed throughout the ages. After several large-scale survey chapters which begin by examining medieval and Renaissance texts, individual chapters focus on selected works, authors, and topics, from Swift’s ‘Battel of the Books’ and the Romantic-era libraries of Austen, Scott, and their contemporaries through the entrapping bookrooms of George Eliot’s Middlemarch, Margaret Oliphant’s ‘The Library Window’, and M. R. James’s stories to the more modern crime fictions and fantasies where ‘the body in the library’ becomes a familiar trope. Though this book’s central focus is on British and American writing, chapters also examine in detail representations of the library in the work of Borges, Eco, Murakami, and more recent writers in France and Russia. Markedly international in its scope, Libraries in Literature also contains chapters that pay particular attention to issues of gender, the politics of national identity, and the depiction of librarians.

This chapter examines the construction of the modern concept of “gender” and its distinct uses and formulations in relation to the categories “sex” and “sexuality.” It presents the main debates within international feminism concerning gender as a theoretical and political project. In particular, the article explores diverse ways in which gender has been differentiated from or opposed to sex; the meanings that “gender difference” came to bear during the 1960s and the 1970s; the place that men and masculinities have occupied in theories of gender; the borders that separate and link gender with sex and sexuality; diverse feminist challenges to gender binarism, attempts to universalize gender, and the discursive coloniality of hegemonic feminisms; and, the contributions of the feminisms of the global South to contemporary gender studies.

The Ronrang Tangsa basti of Phulbari described in Chapter 6 is also Baptist, but because of its location in the plains close to the Arunachal Pradesh border and because of the strong influence of the Baptist Ronrang Tangsa living in the neighbouring bastis in Arunachal Pradesh, the picture in Phulbari is very different from that in Malugaon. Baptist Christianity plays a defining role in determining the daily routines of many Tangsa people in Phulbari. Efforts of the village leaders towards Tangsa consolidation by organizing a pan-Tangsa festival in Phulbari in 2010 will also be described. The final section deals with my fieldwork experiences with respect to the Assamese I came into contact with during the course of my work.

Resumen
This chapter considers Locke’s account of our general ideas of natural kinds, and in particular of the natural kind “water.” This account came under explicit criticism in the work on the semantics of natural kinds by Saul Kripke and Hilary Putnam in the 1970s, which also highlighted this particular natural kind. However, the argument here is that Locke’s detractors had much less right on their side than they suppose. Though there are some deficiencies in Locke’s account, these are due for the most part to his commitment to a theory of the “Great Chain of Being” that has not been borne out by modern science.

Resumen
Chapter seven discusses the emergence of revolutionary networks in the first decade of the Nineteenth Century and the activities of leading figures and movements during the First World War. The student population of the city provided recruits for militant groups that sought to overthrow the Raj. There are case studies of the Ghadr Movement, of iconic revolutionary martyrs such as Bhagat Singh, Udham Singh and Madan Lal Dhingra and of ‘absconding’ students to the trans-border camps in Chamarkand of what the British termed the ‘Hindustani Fanatics.’ The Muslim students became involved in Obaidullah Sindhi’s jihadist struggle in 1915 and in the hijrat movement to Afghanistan of March-August 1920. Some were to replace Pan-Islamic fervour with attachment to Communism inculcated at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East.

Resumen
This chapter tells the story of the revival of interest in Karelian music in the Finnish-Russian border region of Karelia after the Cold War. During this tense time, Karelians had been subjected to territorial divisions and harsh assimilation policies. With Perestroika came new stores of Karelian culture under the influence of developments taking place across the Nordic and Baltic regions. This was a scenario for Karelians in both countries to express their sense of belonging in new ways, and music once again became a medium for this. The author draws on fieldwork in the Karelian town of Petrozavodsk since 1992 and uses two bands from there as focal points for exploring consciousness in the region and beyond in wider international trajectories in Central Europe, Scandinavia, and the United States.

Resumen
Material Culture and (Forced) Migration argues that materiality is a fundamental dimension of migration. During journeys of migration, people take things with them, or they lose, find and engage things along the way. Movements themselves are framed by objects such as borders, passports, tents, camp infrastructures, boats and mobile phones. This volume brings together chapters that are based on research into a broad range of movements – from the study of forced migration and displacement to the analysis of retirement migration. What ties the chapters together is the perspective of material culture and an understanding of materiality that does not reduce objects to mere symbols. Centring on four interconnected themes – temporality and materiality, methods of object-based migration research, the affective capacities of objects, and the engagement of things in place-making practices – the volume provides a material culture perspective for migration scholars around the globe, representing disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, contemporary archaeology, curatorial studies, history and human geography. The ethnographic nature of the chapters and the focus on everyday objects and practices will appeal to all those interested in the broader conditions and tangible experiences of migration.

Nelson, Peter. Limology. University of Edinburgh, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.2218/ed.9781836450283.

Texto completo
Resumen
Limology is an original 20 minute work in three sections for percussion ensemble, composed by Peter Nelson between 2017–18 during a fellowship from the Bogliasco Foundation, as part of a theatrical work in five parts, Nómadas conceived by Caribbean-born choreographer Henry Daniel. It was commissioned by Cambridge Music Conference for the Canadian ensemble Fringe Percussion. Nómadas is a collaborative work with composers Nigel Osborne (UK) and Owen Underhill (Canada), on the subject of the contemporary migration crisis. Preliminary discussions based on existing work by Daniel took place between the four principal collaborators, and one conceptual area was agreed for each of the three composers. Limology deals specifically with Mediterranean migration, using structural concepts from border theory. It forms the third part of the work, using images reflecting contemporary media representations. Swell portrays the surge of the Mediterranean, or any stormy crossing seen from a rubber raft or overcrowded vessel, passing from crisis to loss. Flight presents the imagined border between hope and terror, crossed and re-crossed in the mind of the migrant. Limbo evokes the temporary stasis of the refugee camp or detention centre. Thematic elements composed by Nelson for Limology were taken by Underhill as the basis for the final part of the work. The decision to work collaboratively was a conscious attempt to share concepts and materials emblematic of the cultural divides and reconciliations at the heart of the project. The place of performance, Squamish land in the heart of the city of Vancouver, was implicated from the start as a site of critical importance in the imagination of the work, as a site settled by immigrants. The cross-cultural imperatives of the creative process led to a work that presents its diverse materials as imagined in the contexts and contrasts of settler culture, and as recognising the encounters arising from contemporary migration.

Resumen
This chapter examines the double helix of Matthew’s political and pastoral roles. He saw the northern Church as a missionary Church, and, like his contemporaries in Ireland, came to see prosecution as a powerful weapon in the struggle to end support for Catholicism. This led him to stress the importance of the law, alongside preaching and hospitality, as a tool of reformation. This chapter shows that Matthew’s persecution of Catholics was driven by his belief in the urgency of edifying reform as well as his fear of divine punishment. Matthew also played an important role in Anglo-Scottish relations in the last decade of Elizabeth’s reign. Anticipating James VI of Scotland’s succession to the English throne, he coordinated spy networks for Robert Cecil, negotiated border treaties, and oversaw James VI/I peaceful entry into England in 1603.

Britain’s Levantine Empire, 1914-1923 explains the rise and decline and nature and extent of British military rule in the urban eastern Mediterranean during the course of the First World War and its aftermath. Combining novel case studies and theoretical approaches, the book reveals the extent of military control that Britain established and anticipated maintaining in the post-Ottoman world, before a series of confrontations with nationalist and socialist anti-imperialists forced a new division of the eastern Mediterranean, still visible in the political borders of the present day. It tells this story through the eyes and ears of the British servicemen who built this empire, analysing the testimony of over 100 such military personal sent to Alexandria, Thessaloniki, Istanbul and the towns and islands between them, as they voyaged, made camp, and explored and patrolled the city streets. Whereas histories examining soldiers’ experiences in the First World War have almost exclusively focused on their lives at the frontlines, this book provides a much needed in depth history of soldiers’ experience and impact on the urban hubs of the Eastern Mediterranean, where urban planning, nightlife and entertainment, policing and security were transformed by the presence of so many men at arms and the imperialist interventions that accompanied them.

Danae, Azaria. 2 The Historical and Normative Background: ‘Freedom of Transit’ in International Law. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198717423.003.0002.

Resumen
Chapter 2 examines the development of ‘freedom of transit’ in international law. It provides the historical and normative landscape for treaties on transit of energy via pipelines and offers a basis for academic comparison in the following chapters. The chapter begins with the analysis of the development of rules concerning transit through waterways (cross-border rivers, international canals, transit at sea), and continues by examining the development of rules concerning transit overland through the prism of the historical transition from the League of Nations to the United Nations and the debate about transit rights of landlocked states. It illustrates that in international law, the development of ‘freedom of transit’ via different routes came about separately, and served diverse purposes, for particular routes and for particular groups of states. However, in each case the balance between the interests of the transit state and those of other states underlies all rules concerning transit.

A legal scholar details the creation and function of the Department of Homeland Security, placing it in historical context. A concept so important, it is among the first words of the U.S. Constitution, the defense of our borders is as essential today as it was more than 200 years ago. In response to the breakdown of that function on September 11, 2001, the administration sponsored the USA PATRIOT Act, and created the Office of Homeland Security. Critics of those actions claim these measures give too much power to the government and impermissibly impinge on civil liberties; supporters claim they are necessary for national security. From the 1798 Alien and Sedition Acts to the present, the government has aggressively discharged its duty to ensure domestic tranquility, including jailing dissidents and forcing Japanese American citizens into internment camps. In this book, a leading legal scholar explains in detail the present federal actions and places them in historical context.

Kühn, Wolfgang y Gerd Walz. The molecular basis of ciliopathies and cyst formation. Editado por Neil Turner. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199592548.003.0303.

Resumen
Abnormalities of the cilium, termed ‘ciliopathies’, are the prime suspect in the pathogenesis of renal cyst formation because the gene products of cystic disease-causing genes localize to them, or near them. However, we only partially understand how cilia maintain the geometry of kidney tubules, and how abnormal cilia lead to renal cysts, and the diverse range of diseases attributed to them. Some non-cystic diseases share pathology of the same structures. Although still incompletely understood, cilia appear to orient cells in response to extracellular cues to maintain the overall geometry of a tissue, thereby intersecting with the planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway and the actin cytoskeleton. The PCP pathway controls two morphogenetic programmes, oriented cell division (OCD) and convergent extension (CE) through cell intercalation that both seem to play a critical role in cyst formation. The two-hit theory of cystogenesis, by which loss of the second normal allele causes tubular epithelial cells to form kidney cysts, has been largely borne out. Additional hits and influences may better explain the rate of cyst formation and inter-individual differences in disease progression. Ciliary defects appear to converge on overlapping signalling modules, including mammalian target of rapamycin and cAMP pathways, which can be targeted to treat human cystic kidney disease irrespective of the underlying gene mutation.

Resumen
Finland has occupied the political, religious, cultural and economic border between eastern and western Europe since prehistoric times. Despite its peripheral location, the country has found itself in the mainstream of developments that created modern Europe, such as nationalism, world wars, industrialization, and the current political and economic integration. The first evidence of human life in Finland began sometime in the millennium 7,000-8,000 B.C. when small, tribal groups populated the area. In 1155, Finland became a part of the Swedish kingdom, when most of the Finnish peninsula came under the rule of the Swedish king. Finland was annexed to Russia as a result of wars between the Swedish king and Russian rulers in 1809, bringing about the Age of Autonomy or Imperial Era. The Age of Independence came when Finland's leaders declared the country's political independence in 1917 as a result of turmoil in Russia after World War I. Finland, along with several newly independent countries, had to find its place in the new Europe. The country not only did that, but created a secure and prosperous country during times of turmoil. It has emerged into a place of privilege, with high levels of prosperity, cultural achievements, and social peace. Ideal for students and general readers, theHistory of Finlandis part of Greenwood'sHistories of Modern Nationsseries. With over thirty nation's histories in print, these books provide readers with a concise, up-to-date history of countries throughout the world. Reference features include a biographical section highlighting notable figures in Finland's history, a timeline of important historical events, and a bibliographical essay.

Resumen
As market reforms and migration transformed Albania in the early 1990s, Ardit Gjebrea began mixing traditional folk music with world music and Italian pop. The resulting album, Projekt Jon (1997), provided a new model for song—Western and cosmopolitan, yet firmly rooted in the fertile soil of the nation—against a backdrop of deepening political uncertainty about the very future of Albania. The Ionian Project announced itself with the frenetic beating of the daullë and the traditional cries of Albania’s highland shepherd. This sprawling collaboration between singer-songwriter Ardit Gjebrea, folk singer Hysni Zela, producer Paul Mazzolini, and a team of crack studio musicians in Italy, had an outsized ambition: to transcend the small postsocialist nation-state’s borders, imaginatively crafting through sound a new home in Europe for its citizens. But as Gjebrea prepared to launch Projekt Jon, violence prompted by the collapse of widespread pyramid schemes threatened to tear Albania apart. And for the intellectuals concerned about growing cracks in the symbolic foundations of the Albanian nation-state, the album came to serve as a referendum on the nature of postsocialist citizenship.

Resumen
The military operation to unseat Mobutu forms the subject of this chapter. It opens with the blistering assault of the Rwandan Patriotic Army on the giant refugee camps outside Goma and Bukavu. Hundreds of thousands were repatriated, but the génocidaire hard core escaped into the Congolese rainforest. The failure to eradicate this threat would prove deeply consequential: it meant that the hunt for Interahamwe in Congo competed for Kabarebe’s attention with the campaign against Mobutu, leaving little time to focus on the all-important political task of building the AFDL into a true liberation movement. This was further complicated by emerging rivalries inside the AFDL which pitted the Congolese protagonists against each other—notably Kabila versus his fellow Katangese of the Tigres Katangais—but also the RPF against their Angolan comrades of the MPLA. Though the AFDL was a Pan-Africanist affair with military support and political encadrement from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa and Zambia, the two main providers of hard muscle—Kigali and Luanda—found themselves stumbling into a “race to Kinshasa,” when AFDL troops crossed from Eastern Congo into Western Congo around the border town of Tshikapa.

Resumen
The School of Scottish Studies came into being at the University of Edinburgh in 1951 as a research unit dedicated to ‘the study and conservation of the folk culture of Scotland’ when Professor Angus McIntosh was enabled to turn a vision which he and others had long held into reality. In that year Calum Iain Maclean was seconded from the Irish Folklore Commission to continue his collecting in Scotland, while other pioneers such as Hamish Henderson and Alan Lomax were also beginning the monumental task of systematically recording the rich oral culture of Scotland in Scots and Gaelic. The School of Scottish Studies Archives, now located in Celtic and Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University, continue as a dynamic and inspiring resource for all with an interest in Scotland and her cultural heritage, a treasure-house of sound recordings and photographs from Shetland to the Borders, from the Western Isles to Buchan, supported by an outstanding research library and other materials. The contributions brought together in this volume are based on talks given at a conference organised by the Islands Book Trust in association with the University of Edinburgh in August 2011 to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the School.

Resumen
By examining a broad range of individuals and institutions engaged in international cooperation in the Alps in the 1920s and 1930s, this book explains how internationalists constructed and used emotions to attain their goals. It undertakes a journey through the most diverse terrains and venues, from the international art exhibitions and congresses organized by the Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme (also known as UIAA, or the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation), to the summer camps and schools run by transnational bodies such as the League for Open-Air Education, to the international sanatoria for students, workers, and soldiers healing from tuberculosis in the Swiss village of Leysin. Along the way, this study encounters a broad spectrum of state and non-state actors involved a variety of cross-border endeavors, from large-scale infrastructure projects akin to the tunnel under the Mont Cenis, to the League of Nations and its propaganda efforts, to the plethora of smaller international organizations emulating the League’s work in fields as diverse as leisure, health, and education. Through this metaphorical travel, this book thus argues that starting from the nineteenth century and accelerating in the interwar years emotions became a fundamental feature of internationalism, shaped its development, and constitute an essential dimension of international history to this day.

Resumen
The book Russian Folklore on the Hills of Manchuria is the result of many years of field research by the author aimed at recording and studying the folklore of Chinese Russians living in the urban district of Ergun, Hulunbuir aimag, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, located on the border with the Trans-Baikal region of the Russian Federation. The older generation of Chinese-Russian “mestizos” preserved the language and folk repertoire of their Russian mothers and grandmothers who came to China after the Civil War (1918-1922) and before the era of rapid socio-political and economic change in the USSR. Russian Folklore on the Hills of Manchuria presents tales, mythological stories, legends, songs, charms and “chastushki” of the Chinese Russians in Manchuria for the first time. This is the most complete collection of their folklore, which for almost a century has existed in isolation from the maternal tradition of Eastern Transbaikal. Developing independently and assimilating foreign ethnic elements, this tradition has nevertheless preserved genre forms characteristic of the oral literature of Russian inhabitants of the Transbaikal Region of the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. The book is intended for folklorists, linguists, ethnologists, ethno-musicologists, culturologists, and researchers of the Russian-Chinese borderlands.

Resumen
Buried in the massive archives of Leonard Bernstein are many letters to the maestro from two unknown Japanese individuals: Kazuko Amano, who became a loyal fan of Bernstein in 1947, and Kunihiko Hashimoto, who fell deeply in love with Bernstein in 1979 and later came to be professionally involved in the maestro’s work. Using their passionate letters to trace their special relationship with Bernstein, Dearest Lenny explores how Bernstein, a quintessential American in so many ways, became the world maestro who reached and communicated so powerfully across borders. It follows Bernstein’s transformation from an American icon to the world maestro against the backdrop of the changing geopolitics and economy during the second half of the twentieth century. During this period, Japan’s place in the world and its relationship to the United States changed dramatically, which also shaped Bernstein’s relationship to the world and to the two individuals in important ways. In tracing Bernstein’s worldwide reach through the decades, Dearest Lenny looks at many forms of relationships—not only between Bernstein and the two individuals but also between art and life, the United States and the world, culture and commerce, artists and the state, the private and the public, conventions and transgressions, dreams and realities. Amano’s and Hashimoto’s stories provide a unique window into these relationships, as well as the deep, intimate bond each of them built with their beloved maestro.

Resumen
At a time when critiques of free trade policies are gaining currency, this book helps make sense of the protectionist turn, providing the first intellectual history of the genealogy of neomercantilism. The book identifies many pioneers of this ideology between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries who backed strategic protectionism and other forms of government economic activism to promote state wealth and power. They included not just the famous Friedrich List, but also numerous lesser-known thinkers, many of whom came from outside of the West. The book's emphasis on neomercantilism's diverse origins challenges traditional Western-centric understandings of its history. It illuminates neglected local intellectual traditions and international flows of ideas that gave rise to distinctive varieties of the ideology around the globe, including in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. This rich history left enduring intellectual legacies, including in the two dominant powers of the contemporary world economy: China and the United States. The result is an exceptional study of a set of profoundly influential economic ideas. While rooted in the past, it sheds light on the present moment. The book shows how we might construct more global approaches to the study of international political economy and intellectual history, devoting attention to thinkers from across the world, and to the cross-border circulation of thought.

Resumen
Constant headlines about deportations, detention camps, and border walls drive urgent debates about immigration and what it means to be an American in the twenty-first century. This book traces the long and troubling history of the U.S. government's systematic efforts to terrorize and expel immigrants over the past 140 years. The book provides needed historical perspective on one of the most pressing social and political issues of our time. It examines how federal, state, and local officials have targeted various groups for expulsion, from Chinese and Europeans at the turn of the twentieth century to Central Americans and Muslims today. It reveals how authorities have singled out Mexicans, nine out of ten of all deportees, and removed most of them not by orders of immigration judges but through coercive administrative procedures and calculated fear campaigns. The book uncovers the machine's three primary mechanisms—formal deportations, “voluntary” departures, and self-deportations—and examines how public officials have used them to purge immigrants from the country and exert control over those who remain. Exposing the pervasive roots of anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States, the book introduces the politicians, bureaucrats, businesspeople, and ordinary citizens who have pushed for and profited from expulsion. It chronicles the devastating human costs of deportation and the innovative strategies people have adopted to fight against the machine and redefine belonging in ways that transcend citizenship.

Resumen
The assessment of the Nazi genocide in Poland, an issue which has deeply divided Poles and Jews, lies at the core of this volume. Poland was one of the principal areas where the Nazis attempted to carry out their planned genocide of European Jewry. It was there that the major death camps were established and that Jews were brought from all over Nazi-occupied Europe to be gassed, above all in Auschwitz, where at least 1 million lost their lives in this way. The book states that there is no more controversial topic in the history of the Jews in Poland than the question of the degree of responsibility borne by Polish society for the fact that such a small proportion of Polish Jewry escaped the Nazi mass murderers. The primary responsibility clearly lies with the Nazis. However, the recognition of the primary role of the Germans in the genocide has not prevented bitter arguments over Polish behaviour during the Second World War. Also included are discussions of Polish attitudes to the nearly 300,000 Jews who tried to resettle in post-war Poland; the little-known testimony of Belzec survivor Rudolf Reder; a discussion of Holocaust victims as martyrs; and a presentation of how the Auschwitz Museum sees its future.

Resumen
In a new interpretation of the history of the Balkans during the Second World War, this book explores the tangled political rivalries, cultural clashes, and armed conflicts among the great powers and the indigenous people competing for influence and domination. The author takes an original approach to the region based on the interaction among geography, social conditions, and imperial rivalries that spans several centuries, culminating in three wars during the first half of the twentieth century. Against this background, Rieber focuses on leadership, personified by Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, and Tito, as the key to explaining events. For each one the Balkans represented a strategic prize vital for the fulfillment of their ambitious war aims. For the local forces the destabilization of the war offered the opportunity to reorder societies, expel ethnic minorities and expand national borders. The book illustrates how the leaders of the external powers were forced to improvise their tactics and compromise their ideologies under the pressure of war and the competing claims of their allies and clients. Neither the Axis nor the Allied camps were uniform blocs and deep divisions ran through the ranks of the resistance and those collaborating with the occupying powers. These tensions contributed to the failure of all the participants in the struggle to achieve their aims. The complexities of the wartime experiences help to explain the persistence of memories and unfulfilled aspirations that continue to haunt the region.
