Resumen
Raman and infrared measurements of the LiB3O5 (LBO) crystals were completed. The experimental results shown here are more and stronger Raman lines and infrared absorption peaks, which implies that the external vibrations of the trigonal (BO3)3− and tetrahedral (BO4)5− ions, especially the former, in the six-membered boron–oxygen rings at the low wave number are strong and the internal vibrations of the (BO4)5− ions above 200 cm−1 are stronger than those of the (BO3)3− ions if compared with the Raman spectra of BaB2O4 crystals. These are caused due to the slope and distortions of the B3O7 rings and their BO3 and BO4 units in LBO, which change the structural rigidity of the crystals, intensify the long-range electrostatic force and short-range molecular force, and shorten the ultraviolet absorption edge.

Resumen
Bone marrow necrosis (BMN) is defined as necrosis of the myeloid tissues and stroma without involvement of the cortical bone. We report a case of 66-year-old male with AML-M4 (FAB classification) who was given induction chemotherapy with cytarabine and daunorubicin. Filgrastim at 480 micrograms was administered on days 15–19 to shorten the duration of neutropenia. Consequently patient developed severe pelvic bone pain, leukoerythroblastosis, and severe leukocytosis. Repeat bone marrow aspiration and biopsy on day 21 confirmed bone marrow necrosis. These manifestations responded quickly to discontinuation of filgrastim. Subsequently, he recovered full myelopoiesis. We suggest that there may be more cases of BMN associated with G-CSF that are undiagnosed.

Resumen
Binarized neural networks (BNNs) and batch normalization (BN) have already become typical techniques in artificial intelligence today. Unfortunately, the massive accumulation and multiplication in BNN models bring challenges to field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementations, because complex arithmetics in BN consume too much computing resources. To relax FPGA resource limitations and speed up the computing process, we propose a BNN accelerator architecture based on consolidation compressed tree scheme by combining both XNOR and accumulation operation of the low bit into a systematic one. During the compression process, we adopt 0-padding (not ±1) to achieve no-accuracy-loss from software modeling to hardware implementation. Moreover, we introduce shift-addition-BN free binarization technique to shorten the delay path and optimize on-chip storage. To sum up, we drastically cut down the hardware consumption while maintaining great speed performance with the same model complexity as the previous design. We evaluate our accelerator on MNIST and CIFAR-10 dataset and implement the whole system on the ARTIX-7 100T FPGA with speed performance of 2052.65 GOP/s and area efficiency of 70.15 GOPS/KLUT.

Archives have an important role in providing information to users in making decisions. The management of archives in the Early Childhood Islamic Education (PIAUD) study program cannot be separated from the accreditation activities that have been periodically determined by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT). Form accreditation documents are often slumped and the archives are irregular which must be arranged, causing the Study Program Management Unit (UPPS) to have difficulty organizing and archiving the required documents. The results of the research on the Early Childhood Islamic Education (PIAUD) study program show that some archive management activities have been carried out well and some have not been carried out properly. Records management for accreditation purposes that has been carried out by the study program plays an important role because it can facilitate, expedite, and shorten the time in recovering archives when needed by either the form filling team or the assessor team.

Resumen
Abstract The purpose of this study is to develop a strategy for treating pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (PanNET) through blocking Thymidylate Synthase (TYMS or TS), a DNA metabolic enzyme. Elevated TYMS levels are frequently observed in human PanNET and are associated with worse prognosis and resistance to cytotoxic agents such as 5FU. Elevated TYMS levels directly promote tumorigenesis in vitro and ectopic expression of human TS (hTS) in transgenic mice promotes adenoma development in the endocrine pancreas in vivo. Pancreatic islet tumor formation in hTS transgenic mice occurred with a long latency period, suggesting that additional somatic events are required for PanNET formation and progression. Men1 was shown to be a frequent target for somatic mutation in PanNETs (44% have MEN1 mutations). Therefore, we established a new mouse model designated hTS/Men1-/-, where hTS is overexpressed in pancreatic islet cells carrying conditional Men1 null alleles. We observed that ectopic hTS cooperates with Men1 inactivation to significantly accelerate PanNET progression and shorten survival. Since traditional TYMS inhibitors, such as 5-FU, consistently induce tumor resistance and cannot cure advanced disease, we have now tested the ability of TS-shRNA delivered using adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors as a pharmacological safe and effective anti-tumor strategy. We packaged TS shRNA under the mouse insulin promoter (mIP) for islet-cell specific expression using capsid optimized Y to F double mutant AAV (AAV8-2M) to generate viral particles of scAAV8-2M-mIP-GFP-hTS-shRNA. We treated hTS/Men1-/- mice with intraperitoneal (IP) injection (1x1011 viral genomes/mice). Treated and control mice were analyzed for PanNET progression, TYMS expression and survival. In addition, we tested a human PanNET tumor cell line (BON) that was isogenic with or without hTS expression for tumor formation in xenograft model. We confirmed sustained reduction of TYMS levels 3 weeks after IP delivery of AA8-2M-mIP-GFP-hTS-shRNA into PanNET tissues of hTS/Men1-/- mice. In addition, AA8-2M-mIP-GFP-hTS-shRNA delivery blocked PanNET tumor progression and enhanced the survival of treated mice as compared to vector controls. We also confirmed that TYMS knock-down in BON cells by hTS-shRNA reduced xenograft tumor growth as compared to non-specific shRNA controls. In conclusion, the ability of AAV-mediated TS shRNA to block PanNET tumor progression directly demonstrates the importance of elevated TYMS in tumorigenesis and offers a novel anti-cancer strategy. Resumen
Maggi was the most popular instant noodles brand in India, which children in particular loved to snack on. The brand had a dominant position until suddenly in mid-2015 it got engulfed in controversy. Several state food regulators found that Maggi contained monosodium glutamate as well as lead well above the prescribed limits. Both these substances were harmful especially for children. When Nestlé India was confronted with lab test results it stuck to its position that they had a world class quality control process in place and that their products were safe for consumption. Finally, the national food regulator FSSAI, ordered a ban on the sale of Maggi including product recall. Consequently, several state governments imposed temporary ban on the sale of Maggi noodles in their respective states. The future of the company suddenly looked very bleak. Nestlé India was slow to respond to this fast unfolding crisis. Further, their responses were very brief and not adequately culture-sensitive. This led to the feeling in several quarters that the company was probably guilty of wrongdoing. To set right things Nestlé's worldwide CEO flew into India to douse the flames of the controversy and draw up an appropriate strategy to bail out the brand. He address the media, put in place a new CEO for Nestlé India and set brand Maggi on the path of recovery. However, Nestlé India was still facing a number of critical issues. What should be done to win over the trust of its customers? How should it recover market share lost to competitors both old rivals and new entrants? What strategy should it develop to succeed with the new products, especially hot heads, launched along with the comeback strategy? Should it change its approach to dealing with government health officials to prevent confrontations in future? How should it shorten the response time and make it effective in the face of a media backed public outcry in future?

Resumen
The use and effects of studded tires in Oregon are investigated, updating a 1974 report. Studded-tire use was surveyed, rut measurements collected, studded-tire traffic estimated, and pavement wear and damage analyzed. Studded-tire use in Oregon varies geographically. Half of the vehicles equipped with studs use them on all wheels, representing a significant change from 1974 practices. More than 23 percent of vehicles used studded tires in 1994. Studded-tire pavement wear coefficients were calculated and found to be half those reported previously. The coefficients for rigid and flexible pavements are 0.20 mm (0.008 in.) and 0.86 mm (0.034 in.), respectively, per 100,000 studded tire passes. Studded-tire wear will shorten pavement life on high-volume routes in Oregon. Asphalt pavements experiencing average daily traffic (ADT) volumes of 35,000 and 20 percent studded-tire use will reach the threshold rut in 7 years. Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements experiencing 120,000 ADT and 20 percent studded-tire use will develop the threshold rut depth of 19 mm in 8 years. These estimates substantially reduce Oregon design life expectations for asphalt and PCC pavements. The estimated Oregon studded-tire damage for 1994 is $37 million for the state highway network, with similar damage for municipal and county roads. Alternatives are discussed to reduce the damage caused by studded tires, including a ban on studs, shortened use period, lightweight studs, user fees, and public education initiatives.

Resumen
Introduction: Pleural cavity drainage is a crucial component of the surgical management of patients with various chest diseases. Digital drainage systems are increasingly used in contemporary thoracic surgical procedure, which is likely a result of their effectiveness in achieving early postoperative ambulation, cutting down on hospital stays and lowering costs. The vast majority of thoracic surgeons worldwide prefer digital drainage systems to traditional ones. The advantages of the former, however, are disputed by some researchers. Aim: The objective of this study was to compare the two types of pleural drainage mechanisms, conventional and digital, in terms of duration of pleural drainage in days, financial cost, and postoperative air leak duration. Materials and methods: The study focused on 80 patients who underwent various thoracic surgical interventions in the Clinic of Thoracic and Abdominal Surgery at St George University Hospital in Plovdiv. They were divided into two groups: group 1 consisted of 42 patients who were postoperatively attached to a conventional non-mobile pleural drainage system, and group 2 consisted of 38 patients in whom a mobile digital pleural drainage system was used. The main analyzed data were duration of pleural drainage, duration of postoperative air leak, hospital stay, and financial costs. Results: The average duration of pleural drainage, regardless of surgery and type of drainage system applied was 4.86±0.8 days. The average duration of pleural drainage in patients attached to the mobile digital drainage system was shorter than that in patients with a conventional pleural non-mobile drainage system, regardless of the type of surgery done. This difference was statistically significant in favor of the digital pleural drainage system. The study also found a statistically significant difference in terms of financial costs in favor of digital draining system. The average cost of a hospital stay for patients attached to a mobile digital drainage system was BGN 119.40±7.15, whereas the average cost of a hospital stay for patients connected to a traditional pleural drainage system (PDS) was BGN 159±10.50. Regarding the duration of postoperative air leak, the difference between the types of pleural drainage mechanism used was not convincing. Conclusions: Digital pleural drainage systems provide clinicians with an opportunity to assess the postoperative air leak more precisely, track its dynamics, shorten hospital stays, reduce postoperative costs, and optimize the time to remove the chest drain. Based on these features, they will undoubtedly continue to enter everyday surgical practice.

Resumen
Abstract An open question in cloud physics is how rain forms in warm cumulus as rapidly as it is sometimes observed. In particular, the growth of cloud droplets across the size gap from 10 to 50 μm in radius has not been fully explained. In this paper, the authors investigate the growth of cloud droplets by collision–coalescence, taking into account both the gravitational mechanism and several enhancements of the collision–coalescence rate due to air turbulence. The kinetic collection equation (KCE) is solved with an accurate bin integral method and a newly developed parameterization of turbulent collection kernel derived from direct numerical simulation of droplet-laden turbulent flows. Three other formulations of the turbulent collection kernel are also considered so as to assess the dependence of the rain initiation time on the nature of the collection kernel. The results are compared to the base case using the Hall hydrodynamical–gravitational collection kernel. Under liquid water content and eddy dissipation rate values typical of small cumulus clouds, it is found that air turbulence has a significant impact on the collection kernel and thus on the time required to form drizzle drops. With the most realistic turbulent kernel, the air turbulence can shorten the time for the formation of drizzle drops by about 40% relative to the base case, applying measures based on either the radar reflectivity or the mass-weighted drop size. A methodology is also developed to unambiguously identify the three phases of droplet growth, namely, the autoconversion phase, the accretion phase, and the larger hydrometeor self-collection phase. The important observation is that even a moderate enhancement of collection kernel by turbulence can have a significant impact on the autoconversion phase of the growth.

The growth, development and maintenance of bone tissue are highly regulated processes. Several proteins such as hormones, growth factors and cytokines are actively involved in these processes and exert direct activity on osteoblastic and osteoclastic cells, acting in their differentiation and metabolic activation. The process of bone regeneration is initiated by local stimulating factors as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP). BMPs are a product of the metabolism of osteoblasts, odontoblasts and various tumor cells and is stored in the form of concentrates in bone, dentin and neoplastic cells of osteosarcoma and certain odontogenic tumors such as fibroma cementifying, cementoblastoma benign dentinoma, odontogenic fibroma and odontoma. Clarify the mechanisms that control bone remodeling is a very relevant issue. Accordingly, the mesenchymal stem cells have attracted great interest because of its potential involvement in the process of tissue repair. Obtaining functional osteoblasts from mesenchymal stem cells has been used in tissue engineering and cell therapy. Thus, this present work performed a proteomic analysis of proteins involved in various stages of osteoblast differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow of Wistar rat and human, in order to obtain more information on the biology of cell differentiation and bone tissue. Mesenchymal stem cells obtained from bone marrow were cultured in osteogenic medium for different periods to obtain cells at different stages of osteoblast differentiation. For proteomics analysis tools were used as the strategy of shotgun proteomics and relative quantification (iTRAQ - isobaric Tag for Relative and Absolute quantitation) for protein separation and mass spectrometry to identify proteins. In this context, our results take us to conclude that the MSCs of Wistar rat bone marrow express genes that are involved in osteogenic differentiation in vitro when stimulated to form bone matrix during the 14 days, ie stimulating factor in the microenvironment is of fundamental importance, the MSCs from human bone marrow showed similar results with rat MSCs at the genomic level during osteogenic differentiation, however, when stimulated in vitro formed bone matrix within 21 days, using two proteomic approaches, we could identify proteins important that are involved in the process of differentiation. But it should be noted that although it has been identified genes that seem involved in the process of differentiation, it was not reflected in the proteome of these cells at 7 and 14 days after induction of the osteogenic differentiation, indicating that most of the functionality of these cells and other biological processes are preserved, such as cell proliferation remained without major changes. This indicates that manipulations of isolation, culture and induction of differentiation of these cells did not affect the proteome, with positive aspects to the use of mesenchymal stem cells in cell therapy. From the methodological point of view, this work opens up the use of proteomic strategies based on the score for isobars in combination with protein separation by electrophoresis, one-dimensional SDS-PAGE for the analysis of complex biological samples and limited quantities of production as mesenchymal stem cells. The study of protein expression during stages of osteoblast differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow should reflect their functional status and contribute to the understanding of pathways involved in the process of differentiation.

Due to improved information technology every day, online shopping has developed into mobile shopping which is carried out on mobile networks and mobile devices. Nowadays, there are many shopping Apps coming out, as more and more people do online shopping. In Taiwan, Shopee App is currently ranked first in the download rate of shopping apps. Although the free shipping marketing strategy made Shopee App quickly get a large number of users, there are still many uncertainties concerning online shopping. So service quality is becoming more and more important. Moreover, new shopping platforms are being constantly launched with low switching costs. These are the reasons that make customer satisfaction and loyalty become emphasized in online shopping. Based on the above reasons, this study takes Shopee App as the example to analyze the relationships between service quality, customer satisfaction and loyalty in M-commerce. Questionnaires were distributed through Facebook and LINE to the people who had used Shopee App before and the data was analyzed by quantitative research. The result of this study supports hypothesis 1 and hypothesis 2, but does not support hypothesis 3. The result shows that the relationship between service quality and customer satisfaction is positive. The relationship between customer satisfaction and loyalty is positive as well. Although the relationship between service quality and loyalty is positive, this result is opposite to hypothesis 3. Furthermore, Table 4-19 showed that there is no significant relationship between service quality’s system availability and question L7(will you willing to use Shopee App again in the future?).

Resumen
AbstractRobotic bin picking systems aim to automate the feeding process of randomly stored objects in industrial production. Despite being a research field for decades, there is still a gap between research and industrial application. The presented work intends to improve the utilization of bin picking for the industrial manufacturing of electrotechnical components. In this context, the development process of a system approach based on machine learning is stated. First, related work is presented and the research issue is derived. Second, a comparison between major machine learning techniques with respect to bin picking is made and a reinforcement learning approach is chosen for this work. Therein, a neural network learns strategies for grasping objects from bulk material depending on their position in the bin. Based on manifold states in a simulation environment, it is the goal to gain a versatile character of the robot system. In this regard, preselection criteria, discrete action primitives and grasp constraints are defined that incorporate domain knowledge to shorten the training effort.

Resumen
AbstractBeyond conventional automated tasks, autonomous robot capabilities aside human cognitive skills are gaining importance in industrial applications. Although machine learning is a major enabler of autonomous robots, system adaptation remains challenging and time-consuming. The objective of this research work is to propose and evaluate an augmented virtuality-based input demonstration refinement method improving hybrid manipulation learning for industrial bin picking. To this end, deep reinforcement and imitation learning are combined to shorten required adaptation timespans to new components and changing scenarios. The method covers initial learning and dataset tuning during ramp-up as well as fault intervention and dataset refinement. For evaluation standard industrial components and systems serve within a real-world experimental bin picking setup utilizing an articulated robot. As part of the quantitative evaluation, the method is benchmarked against conventional learning methods. As a result, required annotation efforts for successful object grasping are reduced. Thereby, final grasping success rates are increased. Implementation samples are available on: https://github.com/FAU-FAPS/hybrid_manipulationlearning_unity3dros

Abstract This chapter introduces the second of the dream journalists, Myōe Shonin. Born in 1173 ce in Japan, he became an ascetic monk who advocated for religious reforms in the Kegon and Shingon schools of Buddhism. Myōe kept a journal of his dreams, visions, and meditation experiences for more than forty years. The intensity of his desire to emulate as closely as possible the life and being of the Buddha led Myōe on a lifelong quest for visionary experiences in waking and dreaming. In his dreams, Myōe received guidance, teachings, warnings, and anticipations. While dreaming, he entered a more fluid and open-ended spiritual realm, where he felt entirely at home, even when the dreams became strange or nightmarish.

Resumen
The objective of this work was to discuss the influence of electrode polarity on bead-on-plate (BOP) welds and re-melt temper bead on the pores behavior in the weld bead section of bead-on-grove (BOG) and bead-on-bead (BOB) welds. The welds were made with E6013 electrode at 50 and 100 meters of water depth. Researchers recommend the use of direct current electrode negative DCEN for wet welding. The justifications are to prevent electrode holder electrolytic corrosion and performance improvement. On the other side, some researchers said that no significant variations should be expected while another researcher affirms that depending on the region (Mexican Golf or North Sea) where the welding will be performed, inverse polarity DCEP produces better results. In this work, a gravity feed welding system was used in a hyperbaric chamber with 200 m pressure capability to simulate the wet welds. Visual analysis, arc stability, porosity and pores location in the weld metal enable to evaluate the polarity influence. The results showed significant differences between the two polarities. DCEP produced better bead appearance and higher arc stability than DCEN. Consequently it presented less porosity and best porosity location than DCEN. Additionally, it is was observe that in multi-pass welds (BOG and BOP) the weld bead made previously is partially “re-melted” by the following bead and the pores were in this region were removed or significantly reduced. It is believed then that pores position in the weld section is important information in such welds.

Resumen
Bone implants are long term solutions for bone loss. Currently, two issues have been identified as reducing the long term stability of bone implants. The first issue is stiffness mismatch between the implant and the surrounding bony structure. The current materials used for manufacturing bone implants are much stiffer than the surrounding host bone. The second issue concerns bone-implant integration; the fact is that the bone needs an appropriate surface on which to attach and accept or deliver a load. Additive manufacturing techniques using Nitinol may provide the ability to fabricate bone implants with predetermined pore size and stiffness. This work brings the concept of stiffness tailoring to reality, taking advantage of additive manufacturing technique to fabricate engineering porosity to modify the stiffness. Based on the simulation and test results, it is shown that implants can be made with the stiffness in the range of the stiffness of the bone. The same capabilities can be used to affect a rough surface onto which bone is more likely to attach.

Resumen
The purpose of this research is to establish mathematical models that predicts the bond strength of a reinforcement wire in prestressed concrete members, given the known geometrical features of the wire. A total of nineteen geometrical features of the reinforcement wire were measured and extracted by a precision non-contact profilometer. With these mathematical models, prestressing reinforcement wires can now be analyzed for their bond strength without destructive testing. These mathematical models, based upon a large collection of empirical data via prestressing reinforcement wires from various wire manufacturers in US and Europe, have the potential to serve as quality assessment tools in reinforcement wire and prestressed concrete member production. Most of these models are very simple and easy to implement in practice, which could provide insight into which reinforcement wires provide the greatest bond strength and which combinations of geometrical features of the reinforcement wire are responsible for providing the bond strength. Our various empirical models have shown that the indent side-wall angle, which is suggested by the ASTM-A881/A881M, may not be the only significant geometrical feature correlated to the transfer length and bond strengths. On the contrary, features such as the indent surface area, indent width, indent edge surface area, indent volume, and release strengths do have significant correlations with the ultimate transfer lengths of the prestressed concrete members. Extensive experiments and testing performed at the Structures Laboratory in Kansas State University, as well as field tests at Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI) and one Prestressed Concrete Railroad Tie manufacturing facility, have been used to confirm the model predictions. In addition, our experimental results suggest that the maximum pull out force in the un-tensioned pullout testing has significant correlation with the ultimate transfer length. This finding could provide reinforcement wire manufactures with a quality assurance tool for testing their wires prior to the production. The resultant mathematical model relating the wire geometrical features to transfer length is referred to as the Bond Index Number (BIN). The BIN is shown to provide a numerical measure of the bond strength of prestressing steel reinforcement wire, without the need for performing destructive tests with the reinforcement wire. We believe that with the BIN and the maximal pull-out forces from the un-tensioned pull-out tests, one can have better insight into the optimal reinforcement wire design by testing the performance of wires before they are put into production lines.

Resumen
The purpose of this research project is to develop a mathematical model that predicts the bond strength of a prestressing steel reinforcement wire given the known geometrical features of the wire. The geometrical features of the reinforcement wire were measured by a precision non-contact profilometer. With this mathematical model, prestressing reinforcement wires can now be analyzed for their bond strength without destructive testing. This mathematical model has the potential to serve as a quality control assessment in reinforcement wire production. In addition this mathematical model will provide insight into which reinforcement wires provide the greatest bond strength and which combinations of geometrical features of the reinforcement wire are responsible for providing the bond strength. A precision non-contact profilometer has been developed to measure the important geometrical features of the reinforcement wire. The profilometer is capable of sub-micron resolution measurements to provide an extremely high quality three-dimensional rendering of the reinforcement wire surface profile. From this detailed profile data it is then possible to extract all of the relevant geometrical features of the reinforcement wire. A mathematical model has been created by testing a variety of different reinforcement wires available in the market. By correlating the transfer length of concrete prisms made with the reinforcement wires to various geometrical features, several different levels of mathematical correlation complexity have been investigated. The current empirical correlation models under development are first order and combine three to four unique geometrical features of the reinforcement wire which then act as predictors of the concrete prism transfer length. The resulting mathematical model relating the wire geometrical features to transfer length is referred to as the Bond Index Number (BIN). The BIN is shown to provide a numerical measure of the bond strength of prestressing steel reinforcement wire, without the need for performing destructive tests with the reinforcement wire.

Resumen
Quantitative ultrasound is used to identify healthy versus osteoporotic bone. However the physics of ultrasound propagation in trabecular media is still not sufficiently understood. This lack of understanding is reported to be an obstacle in further development of this bone assessment technique. Numerical models of wave propagation stand as a potentially successful tool to explain the various experimental observations. The main issue in the numerical modeling of wave propagation in trabecular bone is the complex geometry of the trabecular structures surrounded by a fluid (bone marrow). So far, the complex geometrical domain of trabecular structures has been approximated by finite difference grids for wave propagation analyses. In this work, numerical simulation of ultrasound propagation into trabecular bone sample is performed using the finite element method (FEM). A new procedure for numerical modeling of trabecular bone tailored for the FEM is introduced. The entire complex trabecular geometries of two cubic bone samples are reconstructed using computed microtomography data. For the first time a three dimensional finite element mesh using tetrahedral elements is generated for the two-phase medium of a trabecular bone. Separate meshes for the bony part and the filling marrow (considered as non-viscous water) are generated and acoustic-structure interaction condition is imposed on their interface. It is shown that the three-dimensional simulation using the FEM can predict ultrasound propagation phenomena observed in experiments: linear dependency of attenuation on frequency, the effect of bone volume on the attenuation and speed of sound, and the propagation of fast and slow waves. Moreover, the broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) for two ultrasonic signals propagating into a healthy and an osteoporotic sample are compared. A distinguishable difference in BUA between the two samples is observed expressing lower BUA for osteoporotic bone. Our developed model is the first three-dimensional finite element analysis model to compare the ultrasound propagation in healthy versus osteoporotic bone. The developed model can be further utilized as a tool to explain various experimental observations of quantitative ultrasound of bone.

Resumen
Abstract Among the various materials that affect bone cell function, and therefore, could serve as the microcarrier material, bioactive glass has been our material of choice. In the early seventies, Hench et al.[1] formulated these glasses with a typical composition of 45% SiO2, 24.5% Na2O, 24.5% CaO and 6% P2O5 (by weight). They documented that upon implantation in bone tissue, this glass called bioactive glass 45S5, firmly adhered to bone. By now, at least nine groups from around the world have shown that glasses typically containing 40–60 mole % SiO2 and various amounts of Na2O, CaO, P2O5 and some smaller amounts of other oxides bond to bone tissue. As the glass is immersed in vivo, bodily fluids cause the glass to corrode. This corrosion results in selective leaching of sodium ions, the formation of a silica gel layer, and eventually the formation of a calcium phosphate rich layer. It is a recent finding that bioactive glass, when made in granular form with a narrow size range (300–355 μm), has the unique capacity to cause differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells to cells expressing the osteoblastic phenotype [2]. This property of upregulating stromal osteoprogenitor cells to osteoblasts in vivo, as well as the capacity to enhance the expression of the osteoblastic phenotype in vitro, form the basis for our selection of bioactive glass 45S5 as the carrier of choice for culturing typical bone tissue cells in microgravity environment.

Resumen
Seligson [1] describes how Hoffmann and Jaquet, a medical doctor and an engineer, respectively, developed the original Hoffmann fixator as a tool to stabilize human fractures with minimal invasiveness. Whether being utilized in mass trauma injury situations such as the 2010 Haitian earthquake, within our emerging geriatric population, or in veterinary applications, external fixation is widely used [1–4]. In this investigation, a rod-to-wire coupling, shown in Figure 1, and hereafter referred to as the R2W clamp, has been designed and validation tested for Stryker Orthopaedic’s Hoffmann II (HII) External Fixation System. As the name implies, this clamp has the purpose of connecting 8mm rods to 1.5mm or 2mm Kirschner (k-) wires or olive wires to stabilize bony fragments in the lower extremity, thus expediting healing in a trauma case. This paper summarizes the results of the validation tests conducted on prototype clamps. This clamp effectively allows placement of a wire to further stabilize a frame [3] by allowing wire placement without the addition of an intermediate ring, as shown in Figure 2. The wire could be added to any configuration with two parallel rods extending in plane with the bone. As shown in Figure 3, the R2W clamp can be positioned “outboard” with the rod between it and the bone, or “inboard” between the rod and the bone, allowing the surgeon geometric flexibility. The use of two k-wires is recommended to stabilize each bone fragment [5]. One of the goals of the validation testing was to determine the effectiveness and functional safety of the clamp as related to surgically applied k-wire tensions of either 50 kg or 100 kg. Since it is feasible that surgeons may tighten, loosen, then retighten the clamp while positioning it during surgery, the effects of clamp retightenings on the performance of the R2W clamp were also evaluated [4].

Resumen
Low-moisture foods (LMF) are increasingly involved in foodborne illness. While bacteria cannot grow in LMF due to the low water content, pathogens such as Salmonella can still survive in dry foods and pose health risks to consumer. We recently found that Salmonella secretes a proteinaceous compound during desiccation, which we identified as OsmY, an osmotic stress response protein of 177 amino acids. To elucidate the role of OsmY in conferring tolerance against desiccation and other stresses in Salmonella entericaserovarTyphimurium (STm), our specific objectives were: (1) Characterize the involvement of OsmY in desiccation tolerance; (2) Perform structure-function analysis of OsmY; (3) Study OsmY expression under various growth- and environmental conditions of relevance to agriculture; (4) Examine the involvement of OsmY in response to other stresses of relevance to agriculture; and (5) Elucidate regulatory pathways involved in controlling osmY expression. We demonstrated that an osmY-mutant strain is impaired in both desiccation tolerance (DT) and in long-term persistence during cold storage (LTP). Genetic complementation and addition of a recombinantOsmY (rOsmY) restored the mutant survival back to that of the wild type (wt). To analyze the function of specific domains we have generated a recombinantOsmY (rOsmY) protein. A dose-response DT study showed that rOsmY has the highest protection at a concentration of 0.5 nM. This effect was protein- specific as a comparable amount of bovine serum albumin, an unrelated protein, had a three-time lower protection level. Further characterization of OsmY revealed that the protein has a surfactant activity and is involved in swarming motility. OsmY was shown to facilitate biofilm formation during dehydration but not during bacterial growth under optimal growth conditions. This finding suggests that expression and secretion of OsmY under stress conditions was potentially associated with facilitating biofilm production. OsmY contains two conserved BON domains. To better understand the role of the BON sites in OsmY-mediated dehydration tolerance, we have generated two additional rOsmY constructs, lacking either BON1 or BON2 sites. BON1-minus (but not BON2) protein has decreased dehydration tolerance compared to intact rOsmY, suggesting that BON1 is required for maximal OsmY-mediated activity. Addition of BON1-peptide at concentration below 0.4 µM did not affect STm survival. Interestingly, a toxic effect of BON1 peptide was observed in concentration as low as 0.4 µM. Higher concentrations resulted in complete abrogation of the rOsmY effect, supporting the notion that BON-mediated interaction is essential for rOsmY activity. We performed extensive analysis of RNA expression of STm undergoing desiccation after exponential and stationary growth, identifying all categories of genes that are differentially expressed during this process. We also performed massively in-parallel screening of all genes in which mutation caused changes in fitness during drying, identifying over 400 such genes, which are now undergoing confirmation. As expected OsmY is one of these genes. In conclusion, this is the first study to identify that OsmY protein secreted during dehydration contributes to desiccation tolerance in Salmonella by facilitating dehydration- mediated biofilm formation. Expression of OsmY also enhances swarming motility, apparently through its surfactant activity. The BON1 domain is required for full OsmY activity, demonstrating a potential intervention to reduce pathogen survival in food processing. Expression and fitness screens have begun to elucidate the processes of desiccation, with the potential to uncover additional specific targets for efforts to mitigate pathogen survival in desiccation.

Resumen
Review question / Objective: Does the bioactive surface of titanium dental implants, based on biomolecules, influence osseointegration?. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role and efficacy of bioactive surfaces in osseointegration. Our review study limited the research interest to titanium dental implants coated with a biomolecule, i.e., an organic molecule produced by a living organism. Condition being studied: In recent years, much attention has been paid to topographical modifications of dental implant surfaces, as well as to their coating with biologically active substances.a bioactive surface is one capable of achieving faster and higher quality osseointegration, shortening waiting times and solving situations of poor bone quality. Molecules that can be applied for bioactive purposes include bioceramics, ions and biomolecules. Collagen and bone morphogenetic protein have been suggested as bone stimulating agents. Biofunctionalization of the implant surface with a biomimetic active peptide has also been shown to result in a significant increase in bone-to-implant ratios and an increase in peri-implant bone density.

Yalovsky, Shaul y Julian Schroeder. The function of protein farnesylation in early events of ABA signal transduction in stomatal guard cells of Arabidopsis. United States Department of Agriculture, enero de 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2002.7695873.bard.

Resumen
Loss of function mutations in the farnesyltransferase β subunit gene ERA1 (enhanced response to abscisic acid), cause abscisic acid hypersensitivity in seedlings and in guard cells. This results in slowed water loss of plants in response to drought. Farnesyltransferase (PFT) catalyses the attachment of the 15-carbon isoprenoid farnesyl to conserved cysteine residues located in a conserved C-terminal domain designated CaaX box. PFT is a heterodimeric protein comprised of an a and b sununits. The a subunit is shared between PFT and geranylgeranyltransferase-I (PGGTI) which catalyses the attachemt of the 20-carbon isoprenoid geranylgeranyl to CaaX box proteins in which the last amino acid is almost always leucine and in addition have a polybasic domain proximal to the CaaL box. Preliminary data presented in the proposal showed that increased cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration in stomal guard cells in response to non-inductive ABA treatements. The goals set in the proposal were to characterize better how PFT (ERA1) affects ABA induced Ca2+ concentrations in guard cells and to identify putative CaaX box proteins which function as negative regulators of ABA signaling and which function is compromised in era1 mutant plants. To achieve these goals we proposed to use camelion Ca2+ sensor protein, high throughput genomic to identify the guard cell transcriptome and test prenylation of candidate proteins. We also proposed to focus our efforts of RAC small GTPases which are prenylated proteins which function in signaling. Our results show that farnesyltransferaseprenylates protein/s that act between the points of ABA perception and the activation of plasma membrane calcium influx channels. A RAC protein designated AtRAC8/AtRop10 also acts in negative regulation of ABA signaling. However, we discovered that this protein is palmitoylated and not prenylated although it contains a C-terminal CXXX motif. We further discovered a unique C-terminal sequence motif required for membrane targeting of palmitoylatedRACs and showed that their function is prenylation independent. A GC/MS based method for expression in plants, purification and analysis of prenyl group was developed. This method would allow highly reliable identification of prenylated protein. Mutants in the shared α subunit of PFT and PGGT-I was identified and characterized and was shown to be ABA hypersensitive but less than era1. This suggested that PFT and PGGT-I have opposing functions in ABA signaling. Our results enhanced the understanding of the role of protein prenylation in ABA signaling and drought resistance in plants with the implications of developing drought resistant plants. The results of our studies were published 4 papers which acknowledge support from BARD.

Michaels, Trevor. Red-tailed boa (Boa constrictor) surveys at Salt River Bay National Park, St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands: 2023 report of activities. National Park Service, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2303799.

Resumen
St. Croix is home to a variety of threatened and endangered (T&E) species that are at risk for predation by the invasive red-tailed boa (Boa constrictor), such as the St. Croix ground lizard (Amevia polyps), the ground-nesting least tern (Sterna antillarum), and the hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Genetic analysis determined the original red-tailed boa population on St. Croix sourced from a single female released by a pet owner and its range expands every year. Presently, the main population of red-tailed boa is established on the west end of St. Croix and extends as far east as Salt River. One individual was found in Salt River Marina and additional sightings have occurred in Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve (SARI) more recently. This inventory aims to search for red-tailed boas in two focal areas that park staff are actively restoring. The park will use information from this inventory to develop a boa removal program and protect sensitive native species like the ground-nesting least tern, the St. Croix ground lizard and the hawksbill sea turtle nests and increase the success of restoration. Snakes are cryptic species, often occurring in low density, and utilize complex habitat patterns. To increase the likelihood of detecting red-tailed boa, the Maryland/Delaware/D.C. Wildlife Services detector dog handling team partnered with the USDA-APHIS National Detector Dog Training Center to train and develop detector dogs to assist in determining the presence/absence of red-tailed boa for this project. Canines were trained to locate red-tailed boa and indicate its presence to the handler via barking three times near the identified target. Two dog detector teams traveled to Salt River Bay National Park (SARI) in St. Croix to conduct surveys for red-tailed boa in habitats likely to contain red-tailed boa in June 2023. Habitat varied throughout the surveys. Close to the bay, mangrove forests dominated and, as elevation increased, transects took place in almost exclusively dry tropical shrub forest. Each transect was surveyed by one dog team. The canine teams had no red-tailed boa detections within SARI. Canines showed proficiency at surveying for red-tailed boa populations in SARI. Given the proximity of confirmed detections to SARI, it is likely red-tailed boa will be in the park in the future, if they are not already. Additional surveys, whether by humans, canines, or both, are recommended in areas of the park that have not been previously surveyed.

Resumen
Professor M. Zhytaryuk’s review is about a book scientific novelty – a monograph by Professor M. Tymoshyk «Ukrainian journalism in the diaspora: Great Britain. Monograph. K.: Our culture and science, 2020. 500 p. – il., Them. pok., resume English, German, Polish.». Well-known scientist and journalism critic, Professor M. S. Tymoshyk, wrote a thorough work, which, in terms of content, is a combination of a monograph, a textbook and a scientific essay. This book can be useful for both students and practicing journalists or anyone interested in the history of the Ukrainian diaspora, Ukrainian journalism and Ukrainian culture. The author dedicated his work to Stepan Yarmus from Winnipeg, Canada – archpriest, journalist, editor, professor. As the epigraph to the book were taken the words of Ivan Bagryany: «Our press, born under the sword of Damocles of repatriation», not only survived and survived to this day, but also showed a brilliant ability to grow and develop. It was shown that beggars that had come to the West without money at heart can and know how to act so organized. It was also an example of how a modern «enbolshevist» and «denationalized» by the occupier man person is capable of a combined mass action».

Qadri, Faisal y Nishant Garg. Reducing Concrete Cure Times for Bridge Substructure Components and Box Culverts. Illinois Center for Transportation, septiembre de 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/23-018.

Resumen
This report investigated pathways to reduce concrete curing time while maintaining mechanical and durability performance. Among several options such as admixtures, supplementary cementitious materials, and low water-to-cement ratio, researchers explored two mix designs in a field demonstration project. For Stage I of the project, a low water-to-cement ratio concrete mixture was used. For Stage II, the use of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) based seeds was explored. Concrete laboratory mixtures containing C-S-H seeds X1 and X2 exhibited increased early-age strength and reduced permeability. Based on these findings and the Illinois Department of Transportation acceptance of X2 as a Type S admixture, a field demonstration project was conducted on a box culvert near Armstrong, Illinois. The X2 concrete mix design was compared to a low water-to-cement ratio concrete mix design. Results showed that the X2 mixture with C-S-H seeds consistently demonstrated higher strength than the low water-to-cement concrete mixture, suggesting that seed-based admixtures can provide additional benefits for reducing curing times. The recommended dosage of X2 is 5 fl oz/cwt for optimal performance in reducing cure time.

Resumen
A review of evidence was conducted to understand the trends and determinants of malnutrition and identify interventions and programmes that improved maternal and child nutrition in Malawi. While children are less malnourished than two decades ago, one in three children remains stunted (37%) and 63% are anaemic. Children born from younger and less educated mothers, or from poorer rural households are more likely to be malnourished. One in ten children are born with a low birth weight (< 2.5kgs), with nearly half of them stunted by age two. The main causes of malnutrition include recurring sickness, poor infant and young child feeding and hygiene practices and low use of health and nutrition services, influenced by a wide range of factors, including food insecurity, poverty, gender inequality and food taboos. Programme evaluations and intervention trials have shown mixed results but overall highlight the need to address the multiple underlying drivers of malnutrition, rather than focus on one intervention.

Solanki, Pranshoo y Haiyan Xie. Field-Curing Methods for Evaluating the Strength of Concrete Test Specimens. Illinois Center for Transportation, octubre de 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/23-023.

Resumen
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials R 100 standard provides instructions for making and curing concrete test specimens in the field. However, further research is needed to compare the strength of the field-cured specimen with the strength of the actual in-place concrete item. The purpose of this combined laboratory and field study was to evaluate field-curing methods of concrete specimens for estimating the early opening strength of an in-place concrete item. The researchers used one Illinois Department of Transportation class PV mix to cast cylinders, beams, and in-place concrete slabs on October 2021 and February 2022 at an Illinois State University concrete experiment site. Concrete cylinders were cured using three methods: ambient air (Method #C1), insulated box/cooler (Method #C2), and power-operated box (Method #C3). Beams were cured using two methods: ambient air (Method #B1) and insulated plywood box (Method #B2). The cast-in-place specimens from each slab and cylinder were tested for compressive strength, and beams were tested for flexural strength after 1, 3, and 7 days of curing. One cylinder and one beam in each curing method along with slabs were embedded with sensors to collect temperature variation with time. Only Methods #C1, #C2, and #B1 were selected for evaluating further in the field, and data were collected from an IDOT District 5 box culvert demonstration project. Laboratory results showed that Method #C2 curing of 150 mm (6 in.) cylinders estimated early (1 to 3 days) compressive strength of an in-place concrete item within an acceptable range. For estimating the 7-day strength of an in-place concrete item, Method #C1 produced acceptable results. Further statistical analysis supported the results observed in the laboratory and field.
