Praca jest rozszerzonym zapisem wykładu wygłoszonego podczas II Międzynarodowej Konferencji Związku Lekarzy Polskich w Chicago pt. „Patriotyzm. Dziedzictwo. Medycyna”, zorganizowanej 30.09.2019 r. z okazji 80. rocznicy wybuchu II wojny światowej i 75. rocznicy Powstania Warszawskiego [1]. Autor, syn polskiego małżeństwa lekarskiego, emerytowany profesor Columbia College Chicago, na przykładzie biografii swoich rodziców przedstawił walkę o ocalenie człowieczeństwa i humanistycznych wartości zawodu lekarza w warunkach nazistowskiego i komunistycznego totalitaryzmu. Opisał drogę życiową ojca – oficera wojska polskiego, psychiatry, więźnia sowieckich łagrów, uczestnika bitwy o Monte Cassino, organizatora pomocy psychiatrycznej dla polskich żołnierzy i weteranów wojennych we Włoszech oraz w Anglii i Stanach Zjednoczonych. Podobnie opisał drogę życiową matki – lekarza pediatry w Domu Baudouina w Warszawie, która z narażeniem własnego życia ratowała żydowskie dzieci przed zagładą. Zmuszona do opuszczenia stolicy, wraz z 6‑letnią córką nielegalnie przekroczyła kilka granic, by we Włoszech, w Weronie, połączyć się z mężem. Dzieląc jego żołnierski los, troskę o powiększającą się rodzinę postawiła ponad własną pracę zawodową lekarza. Tekst uzupełniają kopie dokumentów, m.in. odkrytych przez autora w Rosji podczas realizacji filmu „Children in Exile” o losie polskich dzieci zesłanych do sowieckich łagrów.

Resumen

W niniejszej publikacji przedstawiono zarys problematyki związanej z edukacyjną działalnością 2 Korpusu Polskiego na terenie Włoch. W poszczególnych dywizjach 2 Korpusu funkcjonowało szkolnictwo ogólnokształcące, zawodowe, a ponadto żołnierze odbywali studia na uczelniach włoskich. 2 Korpus gen. Władysława Andersa nie tylko wsławił się na polach bitew, zdobywając m.in. Monte Cassino czy wyzwalając wiele włoskich miast, ale także poprzez działalność edukacyjną przygotował żołnierzy do życia cywilnego w kraju i na obczyźnie.

A medieval truism holds that a letter must be short. The Benedictine monk Alberic of Monte Cassino, writing in the late eleventh century, advised letter writers that the central portion of the letter, the narratio, "will be quite good if it is short and clear." Much earlier, in the fourth century, Julius Victor had offered much the same recommendation. An official letter, he wrote, should attempt a terse mode of expression and restricted oratory. In private letters, however, brevity was even more important:

Abstract: The article concerns the issue of Byzantine architects, builders, and stone masons in Latin Europe in the tenth to twelfth centuries. The heart of the conducted analysis is the participation of builders from the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium) in erecting particular buildings in the countries of Latin Europe. The authors referred to Byzantine builders’ activities in Reich (Paderborn and probably in Cologne), Italy (Venice, Monte Cassino), and Hungary.It is worth to notice that the topic is analysed in view of written sources from the epoch, which are often disregarded in similar studies.

O. Adalbert (Franz) Kurzeja urodził się w 1920 r. w rodzinie Paula i Agnes Kurzejów. Jego młodość przypadła na niełatwy okres historii. Po ukończeniu gimnazjum w Raciborzu wstąpił do seminarium duchownego we Wrocławiu. Naukę jednak szybko przerwała wojna, ponieważ został zwerbowany do wojska. Koniec wojny zastał go we Włoszech, gdzie jako ochotnik odgruzowywał zniszczone opactwo na Monte Cassino. Dalsze lata wypełniały studia teologiczne w Rzymie, przyjęcie święceń kapłańskich i wreszcie życie jako mnich benedyktyński w konwencie opactwa w Maria Laach. W 1967 r. ukończył studia z liturgiki, wieńcząc je doktoratem. Przez wiele lat udzielał się w Trewirze i odpowiedzialny był za prace w ramach reformy liturgii po Soborze Watykańskim II w Niemczech. W latach 1977–1990 pełnił funkcję opata Maria Laach.

Resumen

Zusammenfassung Dank einer günstigen Quellenlage kennt man die ethnische Zusammensetzung von zwei wichtigen Benediktinerklöstern bei Rom, in Subiaco und Farfa. Die Mönche von jenseits der Alpen waren zunächst im Rahmen von Reformbemühungen durch die jeweiligen Kommendataräbte sehr geschätzt, bekamen aber zunehmend Gegenwind. Der Beitrag untersucht die vorgebrachten Argumente in den Verlautbarungen, die bis zum Appell an den Kaiser und – 1521 – an den Wormser Reichstag reichten. Bei den gegen die deutschen Mönche angeführten Beschuldigungen spielten auch nationale Vorurteile – wie das Laster der Trunksucht – eine Rolle. Als Patres der italienisch geprägten Kongregation von Monte Cassino zunächst Subiaco und dann auch Farfa übernommen hatten, wurde auch die sprachliche Diversität hervorgehoben, die aber in der Praxis keine gravierenden Auswirkungen weder im Innenleben der Klöster noch in ihrem sozialen Umfeld gehabt zu haben scheint.

Polscy katolicy świeccy w swej prasie w pierwszych latach powojennych częstokroć zajmowali się oceną polskich zrywów narodowych i wnioskami, jakie z nich można było wyciągnąć dla teraźniejszości i przyszłości. Narracje te nie były jednak tylko deprecjonujące antyrosyjskie powstania, ale starały się zrozumieć motywacje ich uczestników. Podnoszono często konieczność uwzględnienia przez politycznych realistów „realizmu względem uczuć narodu”, ale i kształtowania postaw w kierunku racjonalnej oceny zjawisk politycznych. Zdarzały się teksty pozostające w nurcie skrajnie romantycznym, ale i skrajnie realistycznym oraz pacyfistycznym. Prezentowane dyskusje i polemiki wynikały zarówno z rozczarowania wynikami wojny, jak i niepowodzenia własnych koncepcji. Duży wpływ na ich formułowanie miała też świadomość strat, jakie naród polski poniósł w ostatnim czasie na skutek realizowania powstańczej polityki oraz przekonania o tym, że kolejny zryw może przynieść katastrofalne już dla zbiorowości skutki. Najbardziej charakterystyczna dla prowadzonego między realistami a romantykami sporu o samą definicję tych pojęć, dyskusja „o Monte Cassino” na łamach „Tygodnika Powszechnego”, dowiodła pewnego ideowego zagubienia publicystów, rozpaczliwie niejako chcących odnaleźć się w nowej rzeczywistości.

Resumen

In the early Middle Ages, future doctors were not students; they were apprentices. Teaching consisted of knowledge about herbs and surgical skills, “taught” by older, experienced peers. In monasteries, monks occupied themselves copying classic texts in the scriptorium. These sources, however, were not consulted by apprentices at the time. In convents and nurseries, manuals of medical botany, especially the ones about herbs of their local orchards, were preferable reading. The first record on medical training in literature is attributed to Charaka, a Hindu physician who in 500 BC referred to the distinctive idea of a “master” from whom one could learn the art and medical practice. In the tenth century, in a somewhat pre-academic teaching style developed in Salerno and later in the Alexandrian model, Mentors were respected celebrities, authorized and of great powers. Shortly afterwards, Constantin came to Monte Cassino to translate Arabic medical writings into Greek (internationalizing medicine) and the University of Bologna was founded on September 18, 1088, by and for students.

Resumen

The Art Institute of Chicago’s St. Augustine (oil on panel) is a universally accepted work by the Spanish artist Bartolome Bermejo. Painted around 1475, the writing saint has been identified as various Benedictine saints and St. Augustine, but these proposals are problematic because they do not take into account all of the iconographic elements within the panel or early Renaissance liturgical practices. This essay will examine the many iconographic details of the panel and consider the surviving archival materials, including an original contract for an ecclesiastically similar figure, Sto. Domingo de Silos by Bermejo. Uncommon ecclesiastical circumstances of Sto. Domingo de Silos in Daraco found in a papal document mirror those found in St. Benedict’s foundation in Monte Cassino. These iconogaphic and textual studies in coordination with an understanding of contemporary liturgical and Benedictine practices will reveal that St. Benedict is the single figure whose personal and ecclesiastical life most closely corresponds to the evidence in the Chicago panel.

Resumen

Purpose: The publication of the compendium Pantegni by Constantinus Africanus in the monastery of Monte Cassino in the eleventh century CE was a pivotal moment in the history of medicine in Western Europe. The work is predominantly based on the Liber regalis by Haly Abbas (Baghdad, tenth century CE). The earliest available manuscript of the Pantegni (KB 73 J6) is handwritten and has been supervised by Constantinus himself. It includes a chapter on ocular anatomy. In this paper we try to distill the anatomic description by Constantinus. Methods: The chapter “de oculis” on ocular anatomy as found in chapter 13 of book 3 in KB 73 J6 is interpreted in the historical context and translated into Modern English. Results: We present an English translation of the concerning chapter. Conclusion: Constantinus bequeathed a compact but comprehensive account of the anatomy of the eye, which can be rendered into a contemporary representation with use of the historical context.

When Mommsen saw foll. 28rline i–29rline 6 of cod. Paris, Bibl. Nat. lat. 7530, an eighth-century grammatical miscellany from Monte Cassino, he realised immediately the importance of their contents. He wrote to Bergk about his discovery on 2 November 1844 and Bergk published the material early the next year as being an epitome of a treatise on signs applied to literary texts by Probus and earlier Latin grammarians. There had long been known Diogenes Laertius' account of theχῖand other signs placed in the margins of texts of Plato's dialogues, Hephaestion's account of the colometricalπαράγραɸος, κορωνίς, διπλ⋯and⋯στερίσκοςplaced in texts of lyric and dramatic poetry, the chapterde notis sententiarumin Isidore'sOrigines, the names of various treatisesπερ⋯ σημείωνmentioned in theSuda, the references to σημεῖα in Eustathius' commentary on Homer' and in the marginal scholia to Homer, Hesiod, Pindar, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes in Byzantine manuscripts, Cicero's allusions to the⋯βελόςand theδιπλ⋯scattered reports of the signs with which Origen equipped Greek versions of the Old Testament and Jerome's adaptation of Origen's system, and Cassiodorus' account of his own method of noting orthodox and heterodox opinions in ecclesiastical writings.

Resumen

The lack of urban planning has led to increased land use and occupation of environmentally inadequate areas, leaving the resident population vulnerable to disasterrisk. The risk analysis defines spatial and temporal conditions and indicates the probability of damages, besides that it contributes for the reduction and control of risks through risk management. The objective of this work was to carry out disaster risk analysis at the Monte Cassino Housing Complex, located in the Jaguaribe neighborhood, in João Pessoa city, Paraíba State, based on on-site visits and the use of geotechnologies. The methodology was based on the Guide for Emergency Registry of Landslide Risks, proposed by the Ministry of Cities, Brazil Government, and on the Property Inspection Standard of the Brazilian Institute of the Engineering Assessments and Expertise of São Paulo State. For the preparation of the thematic maps, we used: survey of the topographic data, descriptive data collection of each lot and residence, informal interviews with residents, and processing and spatial analysis of digital data. The main results obtained indicated that 48 out of the 250 lots presented a VERY HIGH degree of risk, requiring the immediate removal of 190 people. Also, 12 housing lots presented a HIGH degree of risk, which need to be constantly monitored. Therefore, the study proved to be very effective for the diagnosis of the environmental impacts governed by municipal spatial planning legislation.
