This study is part of the perspective of the biographical approach, represented by the method of life narratives, which seeks to construct meanings based on experiences lived by the individual himself, subject of his own history. Thesis deals with the academic and family trajectories of students suffering from mental illness, their personal and family trajectories, on students who are enrolled in Nursing and Physiotherapy courses at the Catholic University of Salvador and with suspicion of depressive symptoms. Research was delineated in a quantitative and qualitative method, being conducted in two stages: in the first, a prevalence study was carried out to estimate the frequency of depressive symptoms in the study population and to track second-stage informants through application of a sociodemographic questionnaire and academic profile and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). The questionnaire was applied in the classroom of all the semesters of said courses, counting on the participation of 185 students of Nursing and 101 of Physiotherapy. Results showed a prevalence of depressive symptoms of 44.8%, with a higher frequency for Nursing students (59.4%). For the second stage were selected for convenience, students classified as suspects of depressive symptoms using the SRQ-20 score. Data were collected through a narrative interview, which allows, through listening, to generate data about the stories of the individual and to apprehend meanings and interpretations that each gives to her own existence. For the analysis of the interviews, the technique of comprehensive analysis was employed. Ten students, six Nursing and four Physiotherapy students were interviewed, nine women, aged between 19 and 40 years, with family income of up to two minimum wages; seven of them are the first of the family to enter higher education. Admission to the university for these young people who already have a history of depressive symptoms requires major effort from them to cope with the stressful situations of academic life and forces them to operate with the material, pedagogical and emotional resources that are not always accessible. These young people "survive" the stressors, at the cost of an even greater effort, triggering forces in a direction that can construct senses to their existence.

Texto completoThe objective of the doctoral thesis is the analysis of a process of mobility experienced by the family of the Macanaz Murcia between 1630 and 1830. We intend to study how a family of "middle people" not privileged background, lacking a great patrimony and with little alternative in the world of business or commerce, could get a career "upward" from the exercise of political power, key family aspirations. We adopt a temporal perspective "long" in order to study the variety of dimensions involved, from the multitude of scales (local, regional, national and European) to the diversity of variables (social, political, cultural, discursive, etc.). The methodology known for his practical-relational nature, which enables us to take into account the individual-and family and group-as the creator of the action agent. Likewise, the methodological tools in line with the three historiography in which the research is based, such as social history of the family, political power and administration. The results show a process of social mobility incomplete or inconclusive. Compared to other similar cases where political success culminates with social success, the Macanaz can not change status, returning to the local terroir minimally "ennobled". Careers at the service of the crown as don Melchor Macanaz (early eighteenth century) or don Pedro Macanaz (in the early nineteenth century) were not enough to strengthen the family in court or to the king. The originality of the research lies precisely in the analysis of a case in which the political consecration goes beyond the social path.

Texto completoThis research project examines how care policies affect the social mobility of child minders with migrant backgrounds in France and (West) Germany. As an element of modern division of labour among women, the child minders’ situation influences the issue of care in the European welfare state within society as a whole. Taking biographical-narrative interviews with registered family home-based child minders in both countries as a basis, those actors are considered who enable mothers (and fathers) to go to work within the scope of outsourcing domestic housework and day care duties

Texto completoThe research is aimed at the reconstruction of various aspects of the multiform relationship which took place between certain exponents of the Ruiz family –wholesale merchants of fabric– the textiles and the clothes, in the effervescent context of the heart of the Hapsburg Empire during the last third of the 16th century, in Medina del Campo (the town of the fairs) and Valladolid (the capital of the area), through the study of the familiar archive. The relationship between the Ruiz family (textile wholesalers) and the combination of fabric and cloth was analysed in a large context and through various scales of observation: firstly with the "family of merchants" (integrating the bibliography with inedited documents), and subsequently with a series of researches projected towards the "family of clients" – both in the long run as well as in precisely isolated moments, between single biographies and the everyday life , from business transactions and the shopping for fabric and clothes, and finally comparing the "Ruiz network" and other 25 families. The first chapter briefly presents the ample state of the art, the sources and the methodology (accounts, inventories, testaments, “diverse”, mainly gathered with a database); the second the Kingdom of Castilla in the 1500s (economy and society) and the figure of the wealthy merchant; the third the story of the Ruiz family (the two central generations, Simon and the Hospital General of Medina he founded.Chapter 4 deals with the textiles and the fabrics, examining certain wholesale transactions and other retail transactions (in which we can appreciate the multiple agency of the Ruiz family), and deeply analyses over 275 occurrences of fabric found in the documents. After chapter 5, which contains a bibliographic approximation of the fashion of the 1500s and the clothing worn at that time (about 30 examples of articles of clothing), chapter 6 presents the relationship between the Ruiz family, the tailor and the clothing, the "alternative" modalities for the acquisition of clothes, and certain examples of the acquisition of head coverings, gloves, trousers and shoes. Chapter 7 focuses on the comparison of the inventories of the Ruiz family with those of other Castilian families in the second half of the 16 th century. The "material wealth" of 33 subjects is examined, and the macrocategories in which the patrimony studied has been subdivided are defined ("knightly appearance", "worn appearance", "domestic appearance", "domestic work", "sources of appearance", "books") for over 13.500 entries, corresponding to over 33.000 items. Finally, the clothing is examined in further detail (over 3.100 entries corresponding to almost 5.000 items, the second macrocategory after the "domestic appearance").It was possible to imagine a wardrobe which was common to the totality of the subjects analysed, with the most recurring items and the clothes which were most diffused. The Ruiz family and the Presa family were amongst the major owners not only of clothes in general, but also of single pieces, in absolute and relative term. Not only there emerges the tendency to "vivir noblemente", but also it is noticeable, also for the clothing, an "exceptional noble lifestyle".If it is possible to realize, with an observation conducted "from above" (that is, from the numbers extracted from the inventories), a fashion, some patterns of consumption, and some general shared tendencies, at the same time it is necessary to emphasize how, going through the single items of the concrete documents, that variety is one of the constants (a variety of documents and hands, fabrics –both “families” and “tipologies”–, fashions).More than the changes of forms or clothes, which did take place (and which have been recognized) a spinning variety of fabrics and techniques, of decorations and ornaments.Summarizing in one phrase the trajectory of the subjects, fabrics and clothing: the Ruiz, a family of wool merchants dressed in silk.

Texto completoThis paper proposes the use of ethnographic film in the context of giving a “voice” to and making better known the political and cultural resistance in Portugal during fascism “New State” by African people and Afro-descendants. The use of voiceover is to a certain extent a counter-narrative effort to destroy the dominant narratives of black-African resistance but also reflects on issues of memory and family archives. This goal will be achieved through re-exploring the path of my grandparents, António Rodrigues (1918 - 2011) and Pedro Yala (1926 - 1998), both maritime workers and members of the present club. The work will focus on the African Maritime Club, one of the associations of black Africans formed in the centre of Lisbon, alongside others, such as the House of Students of the Empire.
