Resumen
Filter media (FM) sourced from recycled organic and mineral materials offer an effective and low cost means of treating urban stormwater. Using recycled materials rather than the increasingly scarce source of virgin materials (typically sandy loam soil) can ensure a sustainable and long-term economy and environment. This paper presents the results from the laboratory analysis and mathematical modelling to highlight the performance of recycled organic and mineral materials in removing nutrients and metals from stormwater. The analysis included the physical and chemical characterisation of particle size distribution, saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), bulk density, effective cation exchange capacity, and pollutant removal performance. The design mixes (DM), comprising a combination of organic and mineral materials, were characterised and used to develop/derive the modelling design within the Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisation (MUSIC v6). Comparison is made to the Adoption Guidelines for Stormwater Biofiltration Systems—Summary Report which were based on the Facility for Advancing Water Biofiltration (FAWB) guidelines to assist in the development of biofiltration systems, including the planning, design, construction, and operation of those systems. An observed outcome from over two decades of biofiltration guideline development has been the exclusion of alternative biofilter materials due to claims of excessive leaching. Results from this study indicate that high nutrient and metal removal rates can be achieved over a range of hydraulic conductivities using design mixes of recycled organic and mineral materials that have a demonstrated equivalence to existing guideline specifications.

Resumen
The biofiltration technique for the purification of polluted air from composting facility volatile compounds was studied. Two different biowaste composting techniques were compared with regard to emission of NH3 and H2S. The ammonia removal was observed in aerobic phase of active composting period, respectively H2S in anaerobic phase. Biofiltration process was realized in modified solid- state fermentation system (SSF). The biodegradation of volatile compounds was investigated in one and two stage systems with inert packing material and hemoautotrofic microorganisms designed DN-1 (Pseudomonas sp.), DN-2 (Nitrisomonas sp.), DN-3 (Nitrobacter sp.) and DN-13 (Sarcina sp.) and Thiopharus-3. The observed concentration of volatile H2S in composting reactor not exceeded 120 mg/m3 and the biofilter can be used to control this gas emission. Since NH3 is a toxic compaund for biofilter at a concentrations 400 mg/m3, multi- stage biofilter system is recommended to control the pollution in aerobic compost reactor.

Resumen
In order to improve knowledge on stormwater biofiltration systems, the Facility for Advancing Water Biofiltration (FAWB) was created at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. One of the aims of FAWB is to improve hydraulic performance of biofilters, given that there are numerous cases of infiltration devices failing after a few years of operation. Experiments were conducted in the field to evaluate the performance of existing systems, and in the lab to understand the factors that influence hydraulic behavior over time. The field experiments show that 43% of tested systems are below nominal Australian guidelines for hydraulic conductivity. The preliminary lab results show a decrease in hydraulic conductivity during the first weeks of operation (μ=66% reduction), although most remain within acceptable limits. Influences of the size of the biofilter relative to its catchment and the importance of the type of media, on the evolution of hydraulic conductivity, are examined.

Resumen
Hydrogen sulfide and volatile organic compounds are often found together in waste air streams. This combination is difficult to treat by biofiltration because oxidation of the sulfide produces acid, reducing the pH in the biofilter. Rapid declines in pH can inhibit treatment of organic compounds. A two-stage biofilter, with the first stage operated at low pH and an inorganic support medium, and the second operated at neutral pH with an organic support can eliminate the problem. A pilot-scale facility was operated on this principle. Comparisons were made among two-stage treatment, single-stage low pH treatment, and single-stage uncontrolled treatment to determine which of the strategies was most effective. In two-stage treatment the first stage did provide protection for the second, allowing it to operate at neutral pH. Single-stage low pH treatment was effective at removing sulfide and many organic compounds, and may be sufficient for many applications.

Resumen
The limitation of available land for wastewater treatment facilities has challenged environmental engineers in searching for efficient and effective treatment systems that will minimize space requirements for waste treatment. To meet these requirements, a fixed film biological process using a DeepBedTM filter for aerobic and anoxic treatment was developed. The innovative biotechnology uses sand as the media to which microorganisms attach and as the filter media for solids retention. The unique characteristics of the biosystem combine long sludge age and short hydraulic detention time and provide small footprints for the bioreactor. The novel technology has been successfully practiced for industrial and municipal wastewater treatment in three (3) continents. This article gives details of a US facility to treat coke plant effluent with high ammonia and phenol content, describes a plant in Taiwan for polishing plastic manufacturing wastewater by combining ozone and biofiltration, illustrates nitrogen removal from a semiconductor factory in Korea, and shows the results of a municipal treatment plant in Britain using BAF to pretreat peak loads from the dairy industry.
