Texto completoThis dissertation describes the Vazante underground mine rock mass and some important breccias geomechanics features, or bimrocks, which occur in the underground. Systematic geologic-geotechnics mappings of the main levels of the underground mine was carried out, allowing the individualization of four families of main discontinuities, besides the preserved sedimentary bedding and the foliation. The mappings were done following the geomechanics classification RMR and the Q system, supplying correlation between the methods for Vazante's lithotypes. A new campaign of uniaxial tests for the determination of intact rock strength was carried out and the RQD values for each classified area had been determined by statistics analyses. The results were discussed according to each parameter and peculiarities found in each distinct rock mass. The breccias, a rock type which is not very accessible in the geotechnical literature, had been characterized according to the volumetric block proportion (VBP) and strength to simple compression. The values of VBP had been found from the analyses obtained with the aid of the Leica Qwin software for the binarization of the digitalized images. There has also been presented the correlation between the simple compression and the percentages of the main chemical elements that constitutes the Vazante breccias, such as zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium and silicon.

The Li-shan colluvial deposits are composed of broken slate and its weathered soils. The ground surface exhibits concave-convex landforms which were formed by weathering and erosion. Thus, the terrain and geology exlpicit that landslide is easy to be triggered by rainfall or earthquake in the area. Due to the heterogeneity nature, the mechanical behavior and mechanical properties of colluviual deposits are difficult to be determined. Based on the nature, the broken slate with grey clay of colluvial deposits in Li-shan area can be categorized as a BIM (block in matrix) rock. The study aims to invstigate the mechanical behavior of the BIM rock. A series of undrained triaxial compression tests was performed on the BIM rocks. Based on the experimental results, it can be found that both the triaxial peak strength and tangential Young’s Modulus of the BIM rock increase with the increase of block content in specimens; the degree of modulous degradation for lower-block-content specimens is more significant than that for higher-block-content specimens. After observing failed specimens, it was found that failure path of high-block content specimens is zigzag and the blocks located on the failure surface were sheared. The fact can be explained that the larger of the block ratio of the specimen is the higher of the triaxial peak strength of the BIM rock. Finally, an approach is recommended for determining the mechanical properties of BIM rocks by laboratory trial compression test associated with numerical analysis.

Bimrock is a kind of rock which contains the composition of block and matrix, its mechanical properites can be influenced by heterogeneous and anisotropy. This research is in different proportion with cement and kaolin to make transversely isotropic specimen of bimrock, then evolute to probe on mechanical behavior. The content of rock is an important parameter to estimate bimrock, this research use rotary scanner to pick specimen of bimrock and develope the image on the surface, use image process method to estimate the raito of specimen of bimrock. The result shows that the increase of confining pressure cause he destructive force to raise, and heterogeneous strength to reduce. This research use Tien and Kuo(2001) failure criterion and FLAC program to analyze the strength、heterogeneous and failure mode.the result show that prediction and experimental data are fairly agreeable.

The Li-Shan landslide region was adopted as an investigated site in this study. This region contains sliding-type colluvium; the colluvium is composed of hard rock and soft clay, which can be considered as a complicated composite geomaterial to be described as a “Blocks-in-matrix (Bimrock)” material. This study aims to model and analyze the mechanical behavior of colluvial materials as “resembled bimrock”. Unlike the bimrock materials studied by previous researchers, the strengths and stiffness of the rock blocks and matrix of the Li-Shan’s colluvium are quite different. As a result, the nature of the colluvial mechanical behavior is very different from the bimrock materials studied by others. Numerically simulated results of bimrock model were compared with the laboratory tested results of artificial bimrock specimens carried out by others to verify the appropriateness of the numerical model. After verification, this study carried out a series of numerical simulation as virtual mechanical tests and looked into the important factors that affect the mechanical properties of the colluvial as resembled bimrock. Factors taken into account include rock-block ratio, rock-block inclination, and rock-block aspect ratio. It was found that, for the modeled resembled bimrock: (1) the strength increases with the increasing block ratio, (2) rock-block inclination results in the anisotropy of mechanical behavior and properties, and (3) the rock-block aspect ratio only has a minor influence on the mechanical behavior/properties. In addition, the effect of specimen size on the mechanical behavior/properties of colluvium was also evaluated through a series of virtual mechanical tests. It was found the variation of mechanical behavior tends to converge as the specimen size approaching to a representative elemental volume (REV). Attempt was also made to compare the simulated results of colluvium as a resembled bimrock with the data of laboratory tested results. Due to the inevitable difficulties of obtaining identical colluvium specimens for laboratory tests, it may be possible to adopt virtual mechanical tests to complement insufficient data of laboratory tests, provided an appropriate calibration is made.

The main purpose of this research is to study the mechanical properties and behaviors of bimrocks that composed of blocks in matrix. An uniaxial bi-directional compaction mold were designed to prepare the artificial bimrocks. By using different composite materials, the mechanical properties and behaviors with distinct block proportions and stiffnesses of the block and matrix are investigated. For the testing results, the mechanical properties of bimrock are controlled by matrix itself or the interface between block and matrix in uniaxial compression. With increasing confining pressures, the global mechanical properties and behaviors are controlled by both blocks and matrix in triaxial compression. Generally, increasing of block proportions decreased the cohesion and increased the internal friction angle and the material parameter m in Hoek-Brown criteria. Based on the experimental observation, the failure modes of the artificial bimrocks at different block proportions and confining pressures can be classified into four categories: axial splitting mode; shear fracture mode; conjugate shear mode with a main shear plane, and multiple conjugate shear planes mode. For theoretical prediction, the prediction models with assuming perfectly bonded interfaces in composite materials can fit the young’s modulus of the specimens at lower block proportions in uniaxial compression, but the prediction models can’t fit the data at higher block proportions. In triaxial compression, the micromechanics model can be used to predict the test data well.
