Texto completoThe whole population of Rwanda speaks the same language, Kinyarwanda, which is both the national and official language. This “surface” linguistic homogeneity is seen as a tree that hides a forest of a relatively “in depth” linguistic diversity (dialects, African and European languages). It is not yet time for chaos but the adoption of official trilingualism (Kinyarwanda-French-English) requires more than ever before the definition of the policy of managing the sociolinguistic situation of Rwanda, namely by clear determination, by a linguistic law, of the roles of official languages in various areas in order to solve the problems that have remained unanswered since the adoption of Kinyarwanda-French bilingualism in the 1930’s. From early the 20th century, the linguistic and sociolinguistic issues have interested various researchers. However, the question of the use of languages in various domains and their approximate mastery is still posed. This work analyses the linguistic policies that have been adopted in Rwanda with aim to bring out the stakes and assess the situation geared towards suggesting the new management strategies of the sociolinguistic situation of Rwanda. This is indeed a linguistic “politology” which falls within the theoretical and conceptual framework already explored whose efficiency has been tested on the ground in different countries. The theoretical framework has essentially been borrowed from the Quebec linguist Jean-Claude Corbeil. It is enriched with analyses of such other authors as Robert Chaudenson, Louis- Jean Calvet, Loïc Depecker, Henri Boyer, etc. on the concept of language planning and concrete situations. The study is based on both a meticulous documentary research and field work that have been carried out in Rwanda with various categories of people and some informal interviews with some stakeholders in language policy and planning [linguists and decision-makers]

Texto completoThis thesis proposes to study the "teaching and diffusion of French language in Afghanistan: review and perspective". The teaching of French has been developed for almost a century in Afghanistan; the French language is taught at the secondary level, at the university level, in the French Institute of Afghanistan as well as at in the private centers in Afghanistan. The present research has tried very modestly to show what are the approaches implemented for the teaching and the diffusion of French in Afghanistan. Throughout this work, we have set ourselves the fundamental goal of exploring the teaching and learning situation of French, the motivations of Afghan students for learning this language, the representations these students have of this language as well as the supports put in place for the teaching, the promotion and the diffusion of this language in Afghanistan. The methodology of this work is based on surveys conducted in Kabul (semi-structured interviews and questionnaires). Our surveys were conducted using data collected through two data tools: questionnaire surveys of teachers and students of French and a semi-structured interview with professors of the French Department of Kabul University. Our interviewees are made up of students from the French department (students specializing in French), students learning French as second language, and students from two French-speaking Afghan high schools (Istiqlal and Malalaï), and the French teachers of these institutions: Department of French and Istiqlal and Malalaï high schools. According to the results of these surveys, Afghan students learn French for several reasons: instrumental and personal. French is considered an important language from a professional point of view on the one hand, and on the other hand, it is the cultural value and prestige of this language that gives Afghans access to a rich culture. It is also perceived, according to these students, as a language of openness to the world, which is why French has a privileged status in Afghanistan. Although Afghans do not use French for writing, speaking and for daily and professional communication, the persistence of this language in afghan society is due to the positive reasons and the representations that these students have of this language

Texto completoTheoretical reflection in the field of FSL and the resulting didactic proposals have, for the most part and to date (including the current ELAN-Africa initiative), been confined to the early learning stage, i.e. primary education. With the aim of remedying this situation by focusing on an area of research that has received very little attention to date, this thesis focuses on the Republic of Djibouti, where French is not only a second language from a sociolinguistic point of view, but has also been recognized as such in the school context, in a very official and unprecedented manner (cf. MENSUP circular of July 25, 2009). What, then, are the contours and imperatives of FSL didactics at level 3 (High School) in the Djiboutian context? Answering this question required a plural methodological approach and a heterogeneous corpus: we began by studying the institutional discourse that gave rise to the above-mentioned reform, by subjecting the secondary school curriculum to content analysis. Secondly, we studied French textbooks using an analytical grid, in order to measure the concrete application of curricular prescriptions. Finally, we carried out an ethnographic survey to shed light on teaching practices. Classroom observation and interviews with colleagues, teachers and trainers enabled us to take a critical look at the actual implementation of official recommendations (and the difficulties inherent in it). Our research, which focuses on a major educational reform, ultimately aims to assess the articulation/coherence between institutional orders, the production of teaching materials and practices in the field

Texto completoRosemary Rosmarinus officinalis, L.(Lamiaceae) is traditionally used in folk medicine for its analgetic, choleretic and hepatoprotective properties. According to the recommendation of European Medicines Agency from 2010, rosemary essential oil can be used for treating dyspepsia and mild spasmodic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, and also externally as an adjuvant in the relief of minor muscular and articular pain and minor peripheral circulatory disorders. Different studies conducted with rosemary essential oil show other pharmacological effects of main components of the oil. The aim of this study was to examine: 1) analgetic effects of rosemary essential oil and its influence on the pharmacodynamic properties of paracetamol, codeine, diazepam and pentobarbital, and also its influence on the pharmacokinetic properties of paracetamol; 2) antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects on the parameters of chemicaly induced oxidative stress. The quantification of chemical constituents of the essential oil was carried out by gas chromatography (GC/FID and GC/MS). The major compounds that were identified and quantitated by GC-FID and GC-MS were oxygenated monoterpens 1,8-cineole (43.77%), camphor (12.53%) and monoterpene hydrocarbon α-pinene (11.51%). The suspension of rosemary essential oil was applied to mice orally (doses: 10 and 20 mg/kg b.w.) for seven days and in single dose for the pharmacodynamic tests: hot plate, writhing, rotharod and sleeping time. Rats treated with suspension of rosemary essential oil for seven days orally (doses: 5 and 10 mg/kg b.w.) were used for the examination of influence of essential oil on the pharmacokinetic properties of paracetamol. Then on the 7th day the paracetamol was applied to them p.o. or i.v.. The parameters of pharmacokinetic were analyzed in blood samples obtained from rats tail veins. The HPLC method was used for measurement of concentration of paracetamol in blood samples. Those concentrations were used for calculation of the pharmacokinetic parameters. The antioxidant activity of the rosemary essential oil was evaluated in vitro (with DPPH and Folin-Ciocaulteu tests) and in vivo. The animals were sacrificed and the samples of blood and liver were taken. The obtained serum was used for determination of standard biochemical parameters and the parameters of oxidative stress were analyzed in obtained liver homogenates. The essential oil of rosemary shows analgetic properties and it decreases visceral pain induced with intraperitoneally injected acetic acid. The rosemary essential oil increases pharmacological effects of codeine and paracetamol. Also, this oil reduces pentobarbital-induced sleeping time and diminishes diazepam-induced disorder of psychomotor coordination. The essential oil of rosemary does not change paracetamol bioavailability. The rosemary essential oil applied in multiple doses does not induce toxic changes in blood and liver samples obtained from animals. The use of rosemary essential oil protects animals from reactive oxygen species, decreases the effects caused by oxidative stress and shows significant hepatoprotective effect.

Texto completoThe purpose with this essay is to find out which demands the syllabus for the Swedish language make on the pupils in compulsory school compared to some active teachers’ point of view. The method I have used to find out is a qualitative interview, where I have interviewed four Swedish teachers of various professional experiences.
After the change of government in 1991, the new curriculum committee had a mission where the goal was to develop the best school in Europe. A national target was introduced and the goals were proposed to be of two kinds; goals to strive for and goals to achieve. A problem in this is that the knowledge that pupils in ninth grade will acquire, is formulated in such a manner so that not even experts in each subject would live up to the demands placed on the students. It is in many cases the teachers' task to break down these goals and present them in a simplified way so that the students can achieve the objectives that are set on them and nowhere in the goalsetting takes no account of the fact that many students go through a major change in their lives, namely puberty.
Syftet med denna uppsats har varit att se vad kursplanen i svenska ställer för krav på elever i grundskolan jämfört med på fältet verksamma pedagogers syn på det hela. För att få reda på det har jag använt mig av en kvalitativ intervju, där jag har intervjuat fyra pedagoger som alla är utbildade svensklärare men som har olika lång yrkeserfarenhet.
Efter regeringsskiftet 1991 fick den nya läroplanskommittén ett uppdrag där målsättningen var att utveckla Europas bästa skola. En nationell målstyrning infördes och målen föreslogs bli av två slag, mål att sträva mot och mål att uppnå. En problematik i detta är att den kunskap som eleverna i årskurs nio ska tillägna sig är formulerat på ett sådant sätt så att inte ens experterna på respektive skolämne skulle kunna leva upp till de krav som ställs på eleverna. Det blir i många fall lärarnas uppgift att bryta ner dessa mål och presentera dem på ett språkligt enklare sätt så att eleverna kan nå upp till de mål som är ställda på dem, och ingenstans i målformuleringen tas det någon hänsyn till att många elever går igenom en stor förändring i sitt liv, nämligen puberteten.

Texto completoThe three foremost current trends in scholarly efforts to decipher mayan writing are to conceptualise it as being logographic, logosyllabic, or logosyllabic with phonetic complements. The third of these approaches seems to be the most promising, an opinion buttressed by the work of a growing number of scholars. Our thesis will offer its support to the logosyllabic with phonetic complements approach through a study of the 362 main signs of the 1962 thompson catalogue. After a presentation of the general principes of logosyllabic writing we have provided for each graphic sign a name the phonetic transliteration, the allographs and the evolution of the sign. A phonetic study follows, bringing together the various interpretations advanced by 32 scholars representing the three different approaches between 1962 and 1986, with a criticalevaluation of these interpretations, taking into account the methodology employed. We have accepted certain interpretations already proposed or have suggested new interpretations where necessary. For each main sign we have provided glyphic examples with their phonetic reading, classified according to their syntactical category. Thus 689 signs out of 862 now have a phonetic value. This will allow us to read a large proportion of the text

Texto completo"francais fondamental", both a basic vocabulary and grammar designed for the teaching of french as a foreign language, came into being in the early fifties. At that time, france was seeking to improve the diffusion of french throughout the world. F. F. Owes its existence largely to the conjunction of two new techniques: the analysis of the frequency of words, and that of their availability. The results obtained however were to be far less scientific than the authors of f. F. Would have wished; and this due to the modifications made by the "commissions du francais elementaire" which had somewhat altered the data derived from the analysis of frequency and availability. Despite a not inconsiderable share of empiricism and of subjectivity, the f. F. Played an important role in the teaching of french as a foreign language in the sixties. By that time, one can no longer speak about the teaching of french without speaking about f. F. Then, in the seventies, with the renewal of pedagogical theories and practises and, more importantly, with the appearance of a new type of learner, this basic french was to be abandoned by didactics of languages without, however, any new solution as regards lexical teaching being offered. Today, there is no longer talk of f. F. But no pedagogical tool has been furnished to replace it. Very few current research programmes concerning the teaching of vocabulary have, it would seem, been brought to completion. Even if certain didacticians have proposed some solutions to the problem, these latter don't appear well enough developed, as yet, to enable their ready adoption. It is an area which remains little explored but one which cannot be ignored if the teaching of french as a foreign language is to be improved

Texto completoA comparative analysis of morpho-anatomical and micromorphological characteristics of leaf, stem, rhizome, root, fruit and receptacle, as well as biochemical analysis of essential oils of underground organs, was conducted over 16 species of 4 genera, Inula (I. aschersoniana, I. bifrons, I. britannica, I.conyza, I. ensifolia, I. germanica, I. helenium, I. oculus-christi, I. saslicina ssp. salicina, I. salicina ssp. aspera, I. spiraeifolia), Dittrichia (D. graveolens, D. viscosa), Limbarda (L. crithmoides) and Pulicaria (P. dysenterica, P. vulgaris) tribe Inuleae, Compositae. In addition to the fact that the species from different genera analysed in this paper were previously placed in different sections within Inula, I. helenium L., as the type species of the genus Inula, has also been placed in a separate section Corvisartia. According to the latest molecular phylogenetic analyses, based on plastid and nuclear DNA sequence data, as well as morphological and karyological data, it is suggested that section Corvisartia should be segregated from the remaining Inula species as a separate genus, thus achieving a greater morphological homogeneity of the genus Inula. The objectives of dissertation are defined in accordance with the fact that the data on the morpho-anatomical, micromorphological and biochemical structure of the vegetative and reproductive organs of species of examined tribe are sparse and incomplete, while the analyses were carried out on few species of Inula, Pulicaria, Dittrichia and Limbarda, but less emphasis was placed on comparative purpose. The research involved a large number of qualitative and quantitative characters that were analysed and measured using a stereomicroscope, light, fluorescent and scanning electron microscope. The obtained data were statistically processed by various numerical analysis methods usually used in taxonomic research. These types of analyses for the species of the generaInula, Dittrichia, Limbard and Pulicaria have not been recorded in the literature so far. The conducted analysis showed that vegetative organs do not provide enough information on the basis of which certain groups of species could be singled out with statistically significant suport, neither the genera according to the actual classification. The yielded results indicated that the species from different genera were clearly delimited on the basis of their carpological and receptacular micromorphological and anatomical characteristics. Receptacle features and organisation of sclerenchyma tissue in a fruit are traits that tend to be diagnostic for genera. The features that separate analysed taxa are: two rows of pappus hairs in Pulicaria species; the ring constriction of the fruit over which it passes into pappus, the sclerenchymatous tissue in fruit in form of continuous ring, the type of trichomes on the receptacular surface in Dittrichia species; the fruit with secretory ducts, and the receptacular surface with weakly pronounced ridges without glands in L. crithmoides. I. helenium fruits differ from those of all the other species by their size, greater number of inconspicuous sclerenchymatic bundles, and poorly expressed ridges among carpopodial prints with glandular and non-glandular trichomes distributed along them. Results revealed that I. helenium stands out as a separate taxon, based on the anatomical and micromorphological characteristics of its fruit and receptacle, with equally small percentage of statistical support, which also supports the recognition of Pulicaria, Dittrichia and Limabarda as separate genera. Obtained results support the claim that I. helenium should be separated from the Inula genus, whereby its authenticity is evident at the level of anatomy and micromorphology of vegetative and reproductive organs. The chemical analysis of the essential oil has provided new data on the qualitative and quantitative composition of the essential oil of the underground organs of the analysed taxa and pointed out the possibility of their application in taxonomy. Also, the obtained results indicated potentially new medicinal plants that represent a potential resource for the pharmaceutical industry. Principal component analysis as well as the results of the Correspondent analysis indicated the absence of the grouping tendency of taxa belonging to the same genus, according to the actual classification. Due to the high variability conditioned by the environmental factors the composition of essential oils cannot be used independently as a reliable chemotaxonomic marker. However, the results of the composition of essential oils are significant in terms of their application for medical and cosmetic purposes, in the industry where oils are used as raw materials, and the results obtained are also significant in the context of evaluation of the quality of investigated essential oils.The conducted research makes a significant contribution to more precise classification within the tribe, which is now basedmainly on morphological characteristics. The detailed description of morpho-anatomical and micromorphological characters of the analysed vegetative and reproductive organs contributes to better knowledge of the characteristics of the analysed species and complements the existing data on them. Also, on the basis of morpho-anatomical characteristics of the fruit and the receptacle a dichotomous key for the determination of the analysed genera and species was developed. According to the Discriminant and Correspodent analysis the characteristics on which is possible to discriminate certain groups within the analysed genera are also distinguished.

Texto completoThe study has two purposes: to investigate the relation between second language learning as an adult and the students' identity, and to analyse if the persons who work at SFI (Swedish for immigrants), who has arrived to Sweden as adults, work to support the students' identity as they learn the languages, or if they treat the students in a way that support their creation of a new/changed identity. To investigate this, has semi-structural interviews been used and they have been analysed with a method called “fenomenografi”. The eight persons who have been interviewed have all come to Sweden as adults and they work with different professions at SFI, in a middle-sized town in Sweden. In the interviews you could see that all the informants changed their identities when they had just arrived to Sweden. The study shows that the hardest point in the language learning was to learn to use the shades of meaning and how to express feelings and opinions in the new language. The informants told that they connected their own historical background with the students' stories and treated them in a way that supported the students' identities. At SFI you need to work with the use of different shades of meaning and go to the bottom with the language. You must also work with how to know where in different contexts you should use different styles in languages and work with both language and culture at the same time. It would work as a support to the identities to reflect on how to get into and participate in the society. Everyone who gets to meet persons who have recently arrived needs to leave the difficulties with the language out of account and instead see the individuals behind the words.

Texto completoThe investigation carried out near the teachers of the town of Taza and its areas relates to the designs and the practices of the stop-assessment (moment of evaluation and support) in the bilingual teachers charged to teach French in the Moroccan public primary schools and on their teacher training. This study attempts to determine the factors preventing the application of a productive evaluation of the act of teaching/training of French within the primary education. The recorded results revealed a deficiency of their teacher training: a lacunar initial formation, an irregular continuous formation and a car formation almost absent for arbitrary criteria. This work makes it possible to the teachers to be informed on the principal theoretical bases of the stop-assessment, namely the formative evaluation, the pedagogy differentiated and pedagogy from support to enrich their knowledge and to manage consequently to overcome the difficulties encountered for the development and the practice the stop-assessment. Starting from our personal experiment and official writings (teaching intentions, new Moroccan national charter), we present suggestions concerning the stop-assessment and the teacher training of the Moroccans teachers. Admittedly, in the absence of a fertile continuous formation, the teacher is invited, in spite of the obstacles met, to cross the step towards a car suitable formation to bring up to date his knowledge and to better follow scientific progress

This research is a general survey which is based on two main actors : students and teachers. The results prove, how important to adjust French teaching within technical fields. In the final chapter of our research , we provide references as well as pedagogical resources in order to improve teaching French for specific purposes in technical fields. Texto completoThe Atlantic cold tongue is a seasonal cooling of the sea surface temperature south of the Equator between the African coasts and around 30°W during the " cold season " (from May to October). The cooling occurs every year but its intensity, duration and spatial extent vary strongly from one year to another. In spite of the very strong coupling between the Atlantic cold tongue and the West African monsoon, the origin of the Atlantic cold tongue variability is not well described. This thesis aims at filling this gap by improving our understanding of the oceanic processes controlling the variability of the Atlantic cold tongue. This study focuses on " intense " Atlantic cold tongue events, defined by abnormally strong (weak) cooling, preceded by negative (positive) zonal wind anomalies. Thus " canonical " being studied, that are the most frequent and probably similar in terms of mechanisms. This classification is applied to ten reanalyses and allows to select with good confidence, five events in each group. These events are studied through realistic simulations. The use of on-line heat budget allows to identify the physical processes that control the formation of cold and warm events. Vertical mixing at the base of the mixed-layer is the fundamental process controlling the interannual variability of the cold tongue. During cold events, it increases the cooling between March and July, while it remains weak during warm events. During boreal summer, vertical mixing anomalies are balanced by horizontal advection anomalies of opposite sign. So cold and warm events are weakened at the end of the season. This thesis highlights that it is more appropriate to focus on the wind energy flux because it is more directly related to the activation of vertical mixing, rather than on the surface wind stress. The wind energy flux is relevant since it is also shown to play a major role during intense " non-canonical " events, i.e. cold (warm) events preceded by positive (negative) zonal wind anomalies. Finally, the modulation of the vertical velocity induced by the wind tends to adjust i) the mixed-layer depth, ii) the intensity of the thermocline, and iii) the vertical shear of the zonal current. These are key parameters of vertical mixing and therefore the cooling rate. Thus, vertical velocity plays an indirect role in the establishment and interannual variability of the Atlantic cold tongue

Texto completoSyftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka den ideala bilden av manlighet i det svenska kvinnomagasinet Veckorevyn. Vidare undersöks hur Veckorevyns egna kravställande policy överensstämmer med konstruktionen av den ideala bilden av manlighet. Det analyserade materialet innehållet tre texter från samma upplaga av Veckorevyn nummer 2, 2016. Två texter som explicit refererar till manlighet och en text som beskriver Veckorevyns egna feministiska policy. Veckorevyns feministiska policy handlar om tidningens arbete mot skeva könsroller och att förändra sexistiska attityder gentemot unga kvinnor. Uppsatsen bygger på ett socialkonstruktivistisk perspektiv i definitionen av genus och språk. Metoden bygger på Michael Hallidays sociala lingvistiska angreppssätt SFG, systemisk-funktionell grammatik, i analysen av textmaterialet samt Faircloughs kritiska diskursanalys. Resultatet av textanalysen indikerar att bilden av manlighet som presenteras i Veckorevyn är nära förknippat med stereotypa idéer av män som sexuellt självsäkra och självständiga. Det analyserade materialet innehåller en hög andel materiella och relationella processer, vilket konstruerar en konkret, fördefinierad och mindre förhandlingsbar bild gentemot läsaren. Den kritiska diskursanalysen visar en hög frekvens av olika diskurser som samexisterar i texterna kopplade till tidningens läsarideal av unga kvinnor: kommersiell/konsument-diskurser (t.ex. reklam), hälso- och förbättringsdiskurser and män-kvinno-diskurser. Alla diskurser är nära sammanlänkade med begär och konsumtion. Dessa begärs-diskurser misslyckas med att relatera till Veckorevyns egna kravställande feministiska policy. Policyn undermineras i det analyserade materialet då både män och kvinnor länkas till stereotypa drag av sexualitet och begär. Detta ligger även i linje med tidigare forskning av Anja Hirdman (2001:257). Resultaten av den kritiska diskursanalysen indikerar att diskurserna av Veckorevyns egna anti-sexism- och feministiska policy kolliderar med en stereotyp kommersiell- och konsumentbaserad begärsdiskurs. Dessa resultat relaterar även till tidigare forskning av Veckorevyn av Anja Hirdman (2001). Sammantaget bidrar dessa indikationer till att ge en bild av Veckorevyns textproduktion riktat mot ett läsarideal av unga kvinnor som komplex, motsägelsefull och multidiskursiv plattform av idéer och värderingar. I likhet med Litosseliti (2006:121), kan Veckorevyns egna feministiska policy, som en del av en postfeministisk diskurs, bidra till att producera nya former av sexism med anledning av Veckorevyns motstridiga och stereotypa diskurser.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to analyze a limited number of picture books from two eras and examine how non-verbal portrayed in the picture, and if it is portrayed differently in the two epochs. I will focus in more detail on the conflicts between children, conflicts between educators and children and teachers' attitudes in the conflict and their way of dealing with them. The method I use in this study is a qualitative literature analysis which I assume Nicholas Eve (2000) book on picture analysis. Together with the relevant literature and Howard Gardners theory of the seven intelligences with a focus on the bodily, I have come to the result that all books regardless of era through body language in the books convey to preschool is something fun and interesting. The biggest difference between the books from the different time epochs was that in the older books appeared only that you could not argue with adults with a clear didactic undertone. In the books from the 2000's figure was the body language illustrated in such a way that the reader understands that the children are allowed to have more influence and not necessarily need to accept the opinions and wishes of the adults, since they are entitled to their own opinion and to have their own free will.

Texto completoThis study, with an annexe, is a reflection on the approach of aphasic subject, in his medical and rehabilitation contexts, from the very start of the diagnosis of his language disturb: the aphasia, or the loss of the acquired language, is generally a syndrome of adult subject. Based on the fundamentals of philosophy, the initial reflection evokes the difficulty of a homogeneous and satisfactory ethics, during the complex medical and paramedical course of this kind of patient, pointing some specific obstacles in the medical, psychological ethics or in the ethics of education. Then, a brief definition of the neuropsychology of language is followed by a presentation of the aphasia, a comment leaned on a mixed aphasia case study, containing a familial and a medical anamneses (Narrative medicine) and a neuropsychological balance assessment (narrative also), focused on the language, witch tends to show that, in a more or less diffuse way, the aphasic subject suffers from a lack of homogeneity on the set or part of the care chain, till the end of the long period of his language rehabilitation (at least three years), when his mother tongue became foreign language. The didactics of the languages, six-thousand-years-old, and its short history is briefly explained; it is the teaching aids proposed for the rehabilitation: the tutorage is especially conceived and adapted to the subject, showing the interest of the field of humanities and social sciences, in a course of care. The care takes into account the psychological state of the patient, his profoundly bruised identity, the neuropsychological balance assessment and the balance assessment of language. Finally, this study suggests the reality of the multidisciplinary field of medical ethics in the field of aphasiology. It expresses a synergy where the position of psychologist, neuropsychologist or speech pathologist, linguist, educationalist language can join

Texto completoOn account of their practically unchallenged status as guardians of objective knowledge, dictionaries are influential elements of societal discourses. They are thus an authoritarian producer and reproducer of societal norms and ideas, and as an interesting object of investigation in critical lexicography consequently lend themselves to the investigation of authoritarian and normalising societal discourses on specific themes. However, dictionaries have to date only been used as primary sources for critical analysis on rare occasions. This study is an attempt at a corrective which explores the presentation of Islam in three editions of the Duden German Universal Dictionary (Deutsches Universalwörterbuch).
The dictionaries studied present Islam to all intents and purposes as the Other. Christianity is established as a norm and the Self, and the Christian way of practising religion is depicted as prototypical for all other religions. However, the emphasis on Christianity and the exclusion of Islam also has a positive effect on the portrayal of Islam, as old prejudices on the alleged brutality of Islam are thus not reproduced.
