Resumen
The recent publication of a new bibliography for Swaziland provides an opportunity to review the development of bibliographical work on this small southern African country. Jérôme Vialatte's Swaziland, un royaume en Afrique australe: bibliographic thématique et commentée (1886-2000) is a production of the Centre d'étude d'Afrique noire of the Institut d'Études Politiques de Bordeaux. It is a substantial work - claimed to be “la plus important bibliographie publié sur ce royaume” - with 1,241 bibliographical references, each characterised by a word or phrase, divided into eleven themes and numerous sub-themes. Each sub-theme is prefaced by a commentary on the subject and a brief discussion of the coverage and quality of the references cited. The whole is prefaced by a useful discussion of Vialatte's approach in compiling the bibliography and a very comprehensive review of sources that include not only periodicals with African themes, but for the first time bibliographies on CD-ROM and an extensive selection of Internet websites.

Resumen
This article discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the bibliographic coverage of the Indian National Bibliography, with its multiplicity of languages and scripts, and compares INB with a number of prominent bibliographies around the world. The Indian National Bibliography is affected with the disease of sluggishness in publication and incomplete coverage. The author describes the application of ICT and the level of success that INB has achieved with regard to its timeliness and comprehensiveness. The publication's workflow uses a customized version of the library system Libsys, version IV, with transliteration using diacritical marks and GIST (Graphics and Intelligence based Script Technology) to overcome language problems. The Central Reference Library, Kolkata, which compiles the bibliography, is currently working towards implementation of UNICODE and discarding GIST to facilitate international cooperation and data exchange. The author examines a number of aspects of the bibliography's production, with special emphasis on remedial measures to be followed to improve currency and coverage.

Resumen
National bibliographies serve a variety of functions, but act essentially as archival records of the national imprint. A number of factors may, however, alter our views of their purpose and affect our expectations of their long term future. Coverage and currency are often constrained by inadequate legal deposit mechanisms, but it may be questioned whether the national bibliography needs to include all publications or whether the national bibliographic agency (NBA) should act as a coordinator of current bibliographic data. Some NBAs have been driven to reduce the bibliographic content of their records as a result of declining income and increases in publishing output. Such measures have not met with universal approval, but appear to have resulted in improved currency. Technology continues to have an impact on the production of national bibliographies, with CD-ROMs, the UNIMARC format and, particularly, networking initiatives all facilitating greater availability of and access to bibliographic information. Networking may well render less relevant the local basis of national bibliographies, with possibilities for supranational coverage and the linking of document supply to bibliographic access. Closer cooperation with the book trade should result in the reuse of publishers' bibliographic data, rather than the NBA having to create bibliographic records from scratch. Politically, the concept of what constitutes a national grouping is evolving, with new alliances between countries as well as the disintegration of former federal states taking place. Important questions arise as to the future purpose of the national bibliography, the potential for cooperation with other producers of bibliographic data and whether the role of the national bibliography is likely to be usurped at the international level. NBAs must view these questions as an opening up of opportunities rather than as threats to their existence.

Resumen
Bibliography in a digital information environmentThe dynamically changing area of the digital, including web, information interacts with the bibliographic universe, bringing new opportunities as well as new problems for both the bibliographers and the users. The article analyzes the following issues: 1) The aim of bibliography. Bibliographies serve utilitarian purposes, they allow, or at the very least facilitate, the access to relevant publications; they connect the information with its potential recipient. But bibliographies fulfil more tasks. They are treasuries of memory, images of a widely understood culture in a certain time and place; documents of archival value meant to be preserved for future generations. 2) Bibliography and library catalogue. The dangers of identifying bibliography as library catalogue. 3) The form of bibliography. The advantages and disadvantages of the paper (printed) and the digital forms. Full-text resource as the target standard of bibliographic services and an opportunity of computer-aided indexing. The possibilities and advantages of using Web 2.0 tools in bibliographies. 4) Searching tools. Arrangements and indexes. 2) Bibliografia a katalog biblioteczny. Konsekwencje utożsamiania bibliografii i katalogów. 3) Postać bibliografii. Zalety i wady wersji drukowanych i cyfrowych. Dostęp do zasobów pełnotekstowych jako docelowy standard serwisów bibliograficznych i szansa na indeksowanie wspomagane komputerowo. Możliwości i zalety stosowania narzędzi Web 2.0 w bibliografiach. 4) Narzędzia wyszukiwawcze. Układy i indeksy.

Resumen
The article compares WorldCat’s bibliographic records with prominent theological library holdings to establish a case that comprehensive or non-specialized publications under the LC classification “theology--bibliography” fell sharply after 1990. While many reasons might be given for this, two are examined in depth. First, theological interpretation/methodology shifted away from historical approaches to focus on new concerns and forms of scholarship. The sheer volume and numerous types of information that were published challenged the usefulness of the comprehensive theological--bibliography. Second, technology radically changed the way people read and approach theology. New formats and information access points, made the comprehensive theological bibliography obsolete. The article concludes with a discussion of the present state of bibliography, focusing on ways librarians and bibliographers might be able to create bibliographies going forward.

Resumen
The interdisciplinary character of the science of language causes great difficulties in bibliographic support in this field. The object of bibliographing in linguistics is not only literature on the language, but also a variety of linguistic resources, which represent a special object to study a branch of linguistics - lexicography. Bibliography of linguistics is the least studied field by specialists among humanitarian bibliographic complexes. The paper first studied the array of domestic bibliographic sources for more than 150 years; the most significant of them are shown. The subject of research is national bibliographic resources in the linguistics field. The objective is to characterize the historical development of the linguistic bibliography in Russia. To achieve this goal we had to solve a number of tasks: identify existing sources for ongoing historical research; to trace the history of forming bibliographic sources, bibliography of bibliographies of linguistics; to form and analyze the body of bibliographic materials; to characterize the problematic areas in the bibliographic software of linguistics. Using the bibliometric analysis it was studied an array of bibliographic products published between 1860 and 2013, the dynamics of bibliographic resources formation was determined, the degree of bibliographic support of some topics and issues in linguistic science and prior directions of their development were revealed. The main results of the study should be considered: 1. The nuclear of fundamental indices on general and applied linguistics is singled out in analyzed literature sources covering the period 1918-1977, as well as in Slavic linguistics for 1825-1981. The complex of current and retrospective bibliographic products was formed and replenished in the country in 1963-1988. 2. The largest share of bibliographic sources in linguistics is presented by book and article bibliography (over 70%), many of which remain bibliographically unrecorded and unused. 3. The following subject areas of linguistics are considered to be bibliographically supported: inter-linguistics, culture of speech and language norms, lexicography, linguistic geography, linguistics regional geography, onomastics. 4. An obvious need to continue the index or database of bibliographic aids in the field of linguistics over the past 50 years is marked. 5. Further development of the linguistics bibliography is impossible to imagine without creating an electronic guide on the bibliographic resources of linguistics, which would reflect the diversity of bibliographical resources and provide their rich information potential for professionals and remote users

Resumen
As I was sunning on the beach this past summer, I read Ross Kidd’s bibliography and essay on popular performing arts in the Third World. My choice of reading material caused great consternation among my companions, who felt it would ward off anyone who otherwise might stop and chat. My friends suggested that reading a bibliography on a beach is tantamount to a formal announcement that one is a dull person. There is a degree of truth in this: bibliographies, notoriously short on narrative, let alone suspense, are dull reading. But then, they aren’t meant to be read like a novel. Bibliographies are resource material. By citing available material on a given subject, the bibliographer saves the rest of us a lot of time.

W latach 70. The Life and Works of Jan Długosz Described in Bibliographies The subject of the paper is the survey of primary sources (bibliographies of his works) and subject bibliographies connected with the person of Jan Długosz. The study will focus on four issues associated with the beginnings and development of these bibliographies, their kinds and content, and their role and significance in studies on Długosz. The author discusses four areas of bibliographic production related to Długosz. The first began in the 18th century and was characterized by the publication of bio-bibliographic works, which combined biographical interests with the search for manuscript texts of his works. In the 1870s the second area emerged connected with the creation of the national bibliography of Polish literature. An important section of this literature was the printed editions of the works by Długosz, and subsequently, also publications devoted to him. This discussion will lead us to the answer to the question about the need and possibility of creating a modern and complete bibliographic compendium associated with this medieval historian. From the early 20th century, the person of Długosz found its way into bibliographies compiled by literary historians, who first of all recorded the scientific achievements related to the studies on his works. Even earlier, from the 1860s, the fourth area developed in which many historical bibliographies were written. The person of Długosz first appeared in the wellknown foreign bibliographies – the German one by Potthast and the French one by Chevalier, later to become a permanent part of Polish bibliographic production created in different forms by Polish historians until today. Although there are many bibliographies, none of them provides a complete list of literature on 180 Piotr Dymmel Długosz, which is why they have to be used in a complementary way. The author suggests that a new bibliography be compiled which would combine primary sources and subject bibliography, and comprise the whole body of literature on Jan Długosz, in an electronic form as an Internet application. He says it will be published in 2019.

Resumen
The temporary cessation to publication of the leading and most comprehensive bibliography in the arts, the International bibliography of art (formerly Bibliography of the history of art) in 2009, led to a lively debate on the future of art bibliography. Many scholars, librarians and information specialists were in favour of saving the established model and of ensuring its continuing existence. At the same time there arose the controversial and much-debated question of whether the traditional model of the IBA – grounded in an intellectual analysis of documents (articles from journals, monographs, exhibition catalogues, etc.) and their description with standardised metadata and abstracts – still corresponds to the needs of modern research on the one hand and to the new potentialities and realities of displaying, connecting, exchanging and gaining information in digital data networks on the other. Library catalogues play a decisive role in this consideration: unlike bibliographies, which follow traditional and more or less unvaried standards, they have mutated to a great degree from inflexible registers to dynamic networks. They enrich and connect the bibliographic information with additional data, they invite the user to tag and to review the corresponding literature and they enable complex forms of unforeseeable discovery. Thus the ‘crisis’ into which art bibliography was plunged when the old IBA ceased publication, at the same time opened up the opportunity to discuss alternative, future-oriented solutions for the appropriate format of bibliographic information supply in the arts today.

The documentation of South African bibliography has for many years been regarded as very substantial, and by far the best on the African continent.South Africa has a long-standing tradition of excellent bibliographies, which date back to the middle of the nineteenth century. In more recent years, the country's bibliographical equipment has been increasingly strengthened to the extent that it now holds its own with the best anywhere, and not just on the continent of Africa. As Chairman of the SAILIS Award for Bibliography for the past decade, since its inception in the mid-1980s, I have always been fully aware of, and greatly impressed by, the bibliographic work of high standing which continues to appear and to fill the remaining gaps in the nation's bibliographical record.

The most important bibliography for Dutch art is the Bibliography of the Netherlands Institute for Art History (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie). This bibliography, first published in 1943, is in fact a continuation in another form of H. van Hall, Repertorium voor de geschiedenis der Nederlandsche schilder - en graveerkunst sedert het begin van de 12de eeuw tot het eind van 1932 (Repertory for the history of Dutch painting and engraving since the beginning of the 12th century up till the end of 1932), The Hague 1936 (Vol.2: 1933-1946 appeared in 1949). The last volume published, Vol.16, Part 1: Old Art, comprises the years 1971-1972; Vol.17, Part 1: Old Art, for the years 1973-1974, is in the course of publication. The material for the years after 1974, however, is put on fiches, and can be consulted at the Institute. The last volume published that included material on Dutch 19th-20th century art was Vol. 9 (1957-1958). Material for the years thereafter also can be consulted at the Institute. Addresses the issues of the actual state of bibliographic activities in the field of culture and the arts. The author analyses the ongoing evolution of attitudes and norms concerned with scientific information, research activities in general, and higher education in the humanities. The history of publishing current bibliographies on culture and the arts at the Russian State Library is shortly traced and it is argued that the access to information and knowledge is provided not only by online services and digital technologies in general but also by the systemised representation of information flows and contentrelated search supported by the current bibliography.

Resumen
A well conceived and executed reference book can become a perennial, a notable tool indispensable to research in the field…Despite its relatively brief history, African studies has developed a remarkably abundant bibliographic infrastructure to support its aims. This is tangibly evidenced in the recent appearance of Yvette Scheven's cumulated bibliography of Africana bibliographies, which comprises citations to well over 3200 bibliographies of various stripes published between 1970 and 1986, or an average of nearly 200 each year. Of course, some of the parts of the structure overlap and even duplicate other parts, and by no means has every effort attained acceptable standards, but on the whole there has been little about which to be ashamed or mortified.Perhaps this should come as no surprise. In theory at least, the obstacles to preparing useful bibliographies are not outrageously demanding, and not at all commensurate with their enduring value. Mechanically, there are only a few rules, but these are unrelenting: entries must be accurate in all their parts, as well as complete, yet should be economical as well, and not provide useless information; coverage must be comprehensive within stated parameters; and access must be facilitated by means of thoughtful organization, extensive cross-referencing, and thorough and sensitive indexing. The intellectual challenges to accomplishing these goals might not be overwhelming; nonetheless forethought, punctilious and constant attention to detail, linguistic ability, doggedness, and above all a commitment to the highest standards of accuracy are all imperative.

Resumen
This essay posits a framework of shared identity and practice for feminist bibliographers, book historians, and textual scholars. Feminist bibliographyis positioned as the use of bibliographic methodologies to revise how book history and related fields categorize and analyze women’s texts and labor. The opening section of the essay quantitatively analyzes book history companions, readers, and introductions to establish a baseline for how the field functions as a practice and discourse. The second section then analyzes the version of bibliography that has been canonized in book history, identifies how book history has explicitly favored a version of bibliography that is antagonistic to feminist work, and proposes a feminist narrative of bibliography that can and should be incorporated as the foundation for studies of the material book. The last section puts a feminist framework into practice and searches for women’s contributions to bibliographic labor in the Anglo-American world. It offers a new set of founders in bibliography and challenges contemporary bibliographers and book historians to re-evaluate on whom we place importance, how we define interpretive scholarship, and how we construct our discourse.

Resumen
The application described has been designed to create bibliographic entries in large databases with diverse sources automatically, which reduces both the frequency of mistakes and the workload for the administrators. This new system uniquely identifies each reference from its digital object identifier (DOI) and retrieves the corresponding bibliographic information from any of several online services, including the SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data Systems (ADS) and CrossRef APIs. Once parsed into a relational database, the software is able to produce bibliographies in any of several formats, including HTML and BibTeX, for use on websites or printed articles. The application is provided free-of-charge for general use by any scientific database. The power of this application is demonstrated when used to populate reference data for the HITRAN and AMBDAS databases as test cases. HITRAN contains data that is provided by researchers and collaborators throughout the spectroscopic community. These contributors are accredited for their contributions through the bibliography produced alongside the data returned by an online search in HITRAN. Prior to the work presented here, HITRAN and AMBDAS created these bibliographies manually, which is a tedious, time-consuming and error-prone process. The complete code for the new referencing system can be found on the HITRANonline GitHub website.

Resumen
This continues to update the basic list of serial bibliographies of possible interest to Africanists which appeared in the 1983 volume of History in Africa and which will continue to appear to the extent that new materials are noticed. Most of the following items are of only peripheral interest to Africanists but each is likely to contain at least some material which does not appear in other bibliographies at all, or at least not so quickly. Where available, I have included OCLC numbers, which may be useful for those with access to the OCLC data base.Published by the Magyar Mezogazdasagi Muzeum in Budapest, the Bibliographia attempts to incorporate all materials relating to rural and agricultural history and related fields, a field not so fully covered, as far as I know, by any other bibliography. Unfortunately, publication is behind (and may even have ceased); materials for 1975 and 1976 were covered in the volume published in 1979. This included a total of 5790 items in 10 major and numerous minor categories, including economic and social history, history of agrotechnics, prices and wages, agrarian ethnography, and agricultural settlements. A list (obviously incomplete) of 90 to 100 journals is included and there are geographical and author indexes.

Resumen
In the article devoted to the famous bibliographer and local historian Boris Timofeevich Utkin (31.07.1923—21.09.1996), his contribution to the development of Russian bibliographic thought, bibliographic technologies, compilation work, to the popularization of bibliographic work, to the study of the history of libraries of the Urals is considered. Utkin’s school, which emerged in the 1970s, is still active. The methodology of bibliography of local history documents developed by him is used by specialists in creating branch and subject bibliographic resources. B.T. Utkin became the first historian of librarianship in the Urals. Thanks to his publications a number of modern researchers appeared, new facts and events were found, unknown names of librarians-activists were discovered. B.T. Utkin’s popularizing activity in the field of bibliography has no precedents. In the book “Amusing Bibliography”, written together with I.G. Morgenstern, a multidimensional professional image of the bibliographer is presented. The memory of the scientist and practitioner is preserved in the libraries of the region and the Chelyabinsk State Institute of Culture.

Through funding from various horticultural associations (including ASHS, ALCA, SAF, WFFSA, and HRI), the People-Plant Council has been able to develop a computerized bibliography that will be of great value to researchers in the area of People-Plant Interaction and a second bibliography specifically for the area of Horticultural Therapy. The combined PPI and HT bibliographies contain approximately 1600 citations, 25 percent of which include an abstract. Due to the size and length of each bibliography (over 200 pages of hard copy), they are available on diskette. This will facilitate users searching for keywords or specific articles and allow them to rearrange the material as needed.

Resumen
Current African Bibliographies: A Comparison Five internationally used current bibliographies are here compared with respect to their coverage of the periodical literature, the degree of their overlapping, and three basic aspects of their layout (list of analyzed periodicals, arrangement of references, index construction). As regards coverage, the most striking conclusion is the low to minimal rate of overlapping, so that it would be rather risky for the student to rely on one bibliography only, even the most extensive. Coverage, of course, is not the sole factor in assessing the value of a bibliography. The five bibliographies differ widely in their organisation and are by far not equally easy to use.

Resumen
In his article, in the Zambia Library Association Journal in 1973, the late Rigg referred to bibliographies appearing at the end of a book or article as ‘hidden’. Thus, he wrote:One type of bibliography which is invariably most elusive to hunt down is the so-called “hidden bibliography” at the end of a book or article. These may be anything from a few lines to the length of a chapter and vary enormously in their usefulness, but should not be ignored. It is Rigg’s article that has inspired the present writer to carry out a similar investigation on Malawi as Rigg’s on Zambia. It is only fair to stress the usefulness of such bibliographies as Rigg had earlier pointed out. A researcher may find a single bibliography on his subject, but is bound to discover more information if he turns to the hidden bibliographies.

Resumen
Actuality of theme of the article is related to strengthening of interest of society to historically-biographic researches, in particular to the problem of biography of science man. The analysis of labours of the known bibliographers enriches bibliographic science and practice. The article is timed to the 40 year of scientific activity of bibliography scientist, library scientist, bibliology scientist, historian, bibliographer T. Dobko. The aim of publication is illumination of one directions of activity of scientist — bibliographic practice. Description of bibliographic labours, preparation of that T. Dobko engaged as a compiler, leader of authorial collective, scientific editor, is given. This direction of her activity separately was not investigated. A source base of publication is folded by basic bibliographic labours of T. Dobko and reviews of scientists on them. Scientific methods are applied: bibliographic, biographic, historical, descriptive; systems, retrospective and source analysis. Among basic bibliographic labours T. Dobko is "Vistnyk: misiachnyk literatury, mystetstva, nauky y hromadskoho zhyttia, 1933—1939: systematychnyi pokazhchyk zmistu" (Kyiv; Vashynhton; Niu-York, 2002), "Serbski folklor i literatura v ukrainskykh perekladakh ta doslidzhenniakh : materialy do bibliohrafii" (Kyiv, 2005), "Skhid i Pivden Ukrainy: chas, prostir, sotsium: u 2 t. T. 2. Materialy do bibliohrafii" (Kyiv, 2016), "Ukrainsko-belhiiski literaturni zviazky, 1870—2008: bibliohrafichnyi pokazhchyk" (Kyiv; Lviv, 2010), "Pokazhchyky zmistu ukrainskykh chasopysiv u fondakh Natsionalnoi biblioteky Ukrainy imeni V. I. Vernadskoho: metabibliohrafichnyi posibnyk" (Kyiv, 2019) etc. Practical bibliographic діяльність of T. Dobko is not limited to her prosecution of bibliographic tools. That help and advices, remark and recommendations, that she gives to the colleagues in all Ukraine, passing the huge experience of bibliographer, her wide expert and scientifically-pedagogical activity is also part of her contribution to the national system of the informative providing of scientific researches. This direction of activity of scientist was naturally outpoured in such phenomenon in our professional environment, as bibliographic school of Tetiana Dobko.

Resumen
This issue sees the last Liturgical chant bibliography prepared by Dr Günther Michael Paucker. Having inherited this position from Peter Jeffery in 1996, he has produced, year after year, a total of twenty-one bibliographies, all with an admirably comprehensive coverage of studies on chant across the full range of languages. The journal could not have imagined a more meticulous, thorough and loyal editor. We remain truly thankful to him for all the Herculean efforts he has put into his Liturgical chant bibliographies from 1997 to 2017. They have been tremendously useful to chant scholars and will remain a lasting monument to his generosity of spirit.

Resumen
Building on the precedent established by the Kunstakademiets Bibliotek and RILA, Nordic countries are for a trial period of three years contributing bibliographic records to the BHA, via the latter’s Scandinavian editor in the U.S.A. Several institutions are involved; the selection and preparation of records for the BHA can usually be done in conjunction with work already undertaken by the institutions concerned, in some cases for national bibliographies. Records include abstracts, which should ideally be provided or approved by the authors. Only a selection of material can be cited in the BHA; it is important that its international role should be complemented by national bibliographies. Although Nordic libraries can subscribe to the BHA in its printed form, online access is inhibited by financial considerations; a CD-ROM version would be most welcome. It is hoped that this three year experiment in co-operation will be judged a success, and that funding to enable it to continue will be forthcoming; a crucial test of any form of international co-operation is whether respect for national traditions outweighs any desire for excessive standardisation.
