The recent publication of a new bibliography for Swaziland provides an opportunity to review the development of bibliographical work on this small southern African country. Jérôme Vialatte's Swaziland, un royaume en Afrique australe: bibliographic thématique et commentée (1886-2000) is a production of the Centre d'étude d'Afrique noire of the Institut d'Études Politiques de Bordeaux. It is a substantial work - claimed to be “la plus important bibliographie publié sur ce royaume” - with 1,241 bibliographical references, each characterised by a word or phrase, divided into eleven themes and numerous sub-themes. Each sub-theme is prefaced by a commentary on the subject and a brief discussion of the coverage and quality of the references cited. The whole is prefaced by a useful discussion of Vialatte's approach in compiling the bibliography and a very comprehensive review of sources that include not only periodicals with African themes, but for the first time bibliographies on CD-ROM and an extensive selection of Internet websites.

This article discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the bibliographic coverage of the Indian National Bibliography, with its multiplicity of languages and scripts, and compares INB with a number of prominent bibliographies around the world. The Indian National Bibliography is affected with the disease of sluggishness in publication and incomplete coverage. The author describes the application of ICT and the level of success that INB has achieved with regard to its timeliness and comprehensiveness. The publication's workflow uses a customized version of the library system Libsys, version IV, with transliteration using diacritical marks and GIST (Graphics and Intelligence based Script Technology) to overcome language problems. The Central Reference Library, Kolkata, which compiles the bibliography, is currently working towards implementation of UNICODE and discarding GIST to facilitate international cooperation and data exchange. The author examines a number of aspects of the bibliography's production, with special emphasis on remedial measures to be followed to improve currency and coverage.

National bibliographies serve a variety of functions, but act essentially as archival records of the national imprint. A number of factors may, however, alter our views of their purpose and affect our expectations of their long term future. Coverage and currency are often constrained by inadequate legal deposit mechanisms, but it may be questioned whether the national bibliography needs to include all publications or whether the national bibliographic agency (NBA) should act as a coordinator of current bibliographic data. Some NBAs have been driven to reduce the bibliographic content of their records as a result of declining income and increases in publishing output. Such measures have not met with universal approval, but appear to have resulted in improved currency. Technology continues to have an impact on the production of national bibliographies, with CD-ROMs, the UNIMARC format and, particularly, networking initiatives all facilitating greater availability of and access to bibliographic information. Networking may well render less relevant the local basis of national bibliographies, with possibilities for supranational coverage and the linking of document supply to bibliographic access. Closer cooperation with the book trade should result in the reuse of publishers' bibliographic data, rather than the NBA having to create bibliographic records from scratch. Politically, the concept of what constitutes a national grouping is evolving, with new alliances between countries as well as the disintegration of former federal states taking place. Important questions arise as to the future purpose of the national bibliography, the potential for cooperation with other producers of bibliographic data and whether the role of the national bibliography is likely to be usurped at the international level. NBAs must view these questions as an opening up of opportunities rather than as threats to their existence.

Bibliography in a digital information environmentThe dynamically changing area of the digital, including web, information interacts with the bibliographic universe, bringing new opportunities as well as new problems for both the bibliographers and the users. The article analyzes the following issues: 1) The aim of bibliography. Bibliographies serve utilitarian purposes, they allow, or at the very least facilitate, the access to relevant publications; they connect the information with its potential recipient. But bibliographies fulfil more tasks. They are treasuries of memory, images of a widely understood culture in a certain time and place; documents of archival value meant to be preserved for future generations. 2) Bibliography and library catalogue. The dangers of identifying bibliography as library catalogue. 3) The form of bibliography. The advantages and disadvantages of the paper (printed) and the digital forms. Full­-text resource as the target standard of bibliographic services and an opportunity of computer-­aided indexing. The possibilities and advantages of using Web 2.0 tools in bibliographies. 4) Searching tools. Arrangements and indexes. W artykule poddano analizie cztery grupy zagadnień: 1) Cele i zadania bibliografii. Bibliografie służą celom utylitarnym, umożliwiają, lub co najmniej ułatwiają, osobom zainteresowanym dotarcie do właściwych publikacji. Bibliografie mają też inne zadania. Są skarbnicami pamięci, obrazem stanu szeroko rozumianej kultury w określonym czasie i miejscu, dokumentem, który ma znamiona dokumentu archiwalnego, przeznaczonego do zachowania dla przyszłych pokoleń. 2) Bibliografia a katalog biblioteczny. Konsekwencje utożsamiania bibliografii i katalogów. 3) Postać bibliografii. Zalety i wady wersji drukowanych i cyfrowych. The article compares WorldCat’s bibliographic records with prominent theological library holdings to establish a case that comprehensive or non-specialized publications under the LC classification “theology--bibliography” fell sharply after 1990. While many reasons might be given for this, two are examined in depth. First, theological interpretation/methodology shifted away from historical approaches to focus on new concerns and forms of scholarship. The sheer volume and numerous types of information that were published challenged the usefulness of the comprehensive theological--bibliography. Second, technology radically changed the way people read and approach theology. New formats and information access points, made the comprehensive theological bibliography obsolete. The article concludes with a discussion of the present state of bibliography, focusing on ways librarians and bibliographers might be able to create bibliographies going forward.

The article shows the significance of retrospective indexes in the system of Siberian bibliography in the historical context. The authors highlight the history of formation and development of retrospective bibliography in the State Public Scientific Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, starting from the 1960s. The article places the main emphasis on the implementation of major bibliographic projects of the State Public Scientific Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences: creation of a set of retrospective indexes and databases on bibliography of bibliographies, the history of book, librarianship and bibliography; preparation of the Union catalogue of Siberian and Far Eastern books as part of the national retrospective bibliography of Russia; creation of biobibliographic databases. The authors draw conclusions about the importance of various types of bibliographic products (electronic and printed) and outline the tasks on bibliographic activity of the State Scientific Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the field of retrospective bibliography.

The interdisciplinary character of the science of language causes great difficulties in bibliographic support in this field. The object of bibliographing in linguistics is not only literature on the language, but also a variety of linguistic resources, which represent a special object to study a branch of linguistics - lexicography. Bibliography of linguistics is the least studied field by specialists among humanitarian bibliographic complexes. The paper first studied the array of domestic bibliographic sources for more than 150 years; the most significant of them are shown. The subject of research is national bibliographic resources in the linguistics field. The objective is to characterize the historical development of the linguistic bibliography in Russia. To achieve this goal we had to solve a number of tasks: identify existing sources for ongoing historical research; to trace the history of forming bibliographic sources, bibliography of bibliographies of linguistics; to form and analyze the body of bibliographic materials; to characterize the problematic areas in the bibliographic software of linguistics. Using the bibliometric analysis it was studied an array of bibliographic products published between 1860 and 2013, the dynamics of bibliographic resources formation was determined, the degree of bibliographic support of some topics and issues in linguistic science and prior directions of their development were revealed. The main results of the study should be considered: 1. The nuclear of fundamental indices on general and applied linguistics is singled out in analyzed literature sources covering the period 1918-1977, as well as in Slavic linguistics for 1825-1981. The complex of current and retrospective bibliographic products was formed and replenished in the country in 1963-1988. 2. The largest share of bibliographic sources in linguistics is presented by book and article bibliography (over 70%), many of which remain bibliographically unrecorded and unused. 3. The following subject areas of linguistics are considered to be bibliographically supported: inter-linguistics, culture of speech and language norms, lexicography, linguistic geography, linguistics regional geography, onomastics. 4. An obvious need to continue the index or database of bibliographic aids in the field of linguistics over the past 50 years is marked. 5. Further development of the linguistics bibliography is impossible to imagine without creating an electronic guide on the bibliographic resources of linguistics, which would reflect the diversity of bibliographical resources and provide their rich information potential for professionals and remote users

As I was sunning on the beach this past summer, I read Ross Kidd’s bibliography and essay on popular performing arts in the Third World. My choice of reading material caused great consternation among my companions, who felt it would ward off anyone who otherwise might stop and chat. My friends suggested that reading a bibliography on a beach is tantamount to a formal announcement that one is a dull person. There is a degree of truth in this: bibliographies, notoriously short on narrative, let alone suspense, are dull reading. But then, they aren’t meant to be read like a novel. Bibliographies are resource material. By citing available material on a given subject, the bibliographer saves the rest of us a lot of time.

This document annotates 23 unaccompanied alto saxophone compositions, including original works and transcriptions. Selection of these pieces was based on the following criteria: (1) works which are commonly performed, (2) works by major composers, and (3) works which are important in terms of innovative performance techniques. Each annotation provides a synopsis of the composition, biographical information about the composer, pertinent information about the composition (dedication, duration, etc.), discussion about various performance considerations, a brief analysis, and concluding statements about the work including a qualitative assessment. Compositions annotated in the document include: Caprice en forme de valse by Paul Bonneau, Mai/ by Ryo Noda, Sonate by Jeanine Rueff, Suite Francais by Pierre Max Dubois, and the Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 by J. S. Bach arr. Londeix, and arr. Ricker (both editions are discussed). At the conclusion of the document, a bibliography of approximately 300 unaccompanied compositions for the alto saxophone (including commonly performed transcriptions) is listed, providing the title, composer, and publisher (if available).

Every scientific research begins with a literature review that includes an extensive bibliographic search. Such searches are known to be difficult and time-consuming because of the vast amount of topical material existing in today's ever-changing technology base. Keeping up-to-date with related literature and being aware of the most recent publications require extensive time and effort. The need for a WWW-based software tool for collecting and providing access to this scientific body of knowledge is undeniable. The study explained herein deals with this problem by developing an efficient, advanced, easy-to-use tool, WebBiblio, that provides a globally accessible WWW environment enabling the collection and dissemination of searchable bibliographies comprised of abstracts and keywords. This thesis describes the design, structure and features of WebBiblio, and explains the ideas and approaches used in its development. The developed system is not a prototype, but a production system that exploits the capabilities of the WWW. Currently, it is used to publish three VV&T bibliographies at the WWW site: http://manta.cs.vt.edu/biblio. With its rich set of features and ergonomically engineered interface, WebBiblio brings a comprehensive solution to solving the problem of globally collecting and providing access to a diverse set of bibliographies.

The thesis has grown out of an extensive survey of the literature pertaining to the county of Rutland. The survey was an original idea to produce a county bibliography which had both a short-title catalogue of conventional references and full physical descriptions of the books of the county. Two types of bibliography, analytical and systematic, are combined in one survey. The thesis is an account of this project together with a rigorous review of the theoretical background against which it was conducted. The practice of bibliography, and specifically of bibliographies of counties, is reviewed. A new definition of county bibliography is offered, together with its appropriate objects of study (book, pamphlet, leaflet, ephemera and publication are some of the specific concepts defined here). The research methods employed for the Rutland project are described and a plan outlined showing how a comprehensive survey of any English county's literature could be achieved. Especially important here are the lessons learned from on-line searching. There is a detailed discussion of inclusion and exclusion policies appropriate for a county bibliography, and an account of how this material should be presented and described. A new classification system for a county bibliography is outlined, and older solutions to the classification problem reviewed. The lessons of the Rutland project are discussed, including presentation of a statistical breakdown of the Rutland material, and whether the way in which the Rutland project was conducted could be copied for other counties. The Rutland statistics are contrasted with those for other counties. Several appendices present bibliographical information, lists of categories of literature encountered and samples from the Rutland survey.

Over the past few months, I have been assembling a bibliography on elder abuse that will soon be published on the Web site of the Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (www.onpea.org). I brought to this inquiry the tools I developed a decade ago during a sabbatical I spent developing subject-literature expertise in gerontology. That study was focussed exclusively on the print literature. Today, however, no bibliography would be complete without addressing the multifaceted nature of communication. Not only is there the traditional “hard copy” bibliography, there are videos, the Internet, and even the telephone. (Phone Busters, operated by the Ontario Provincial Police, does research on telemarketing scams and seniors.) I should emphasize this bibliography is not meant to be comprehensive, but a “brief bibliography” along the lines of the excellent series published by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.
Au cours des quelques derniers mois j’ai recueilli une bibliographie sur les mauvais traitements envers les personnes âgées qui sera publiée sous peu sur les site Web du Réseau ontarien de prévention des mauvais traitements à l'égard des personnes âgées (www.onpea.org). Dans cette investigation, j’ai utilisé les instruments que j’avais élaborés voilà dix ans pendant un congé sabbatique durant lequel j’ai acquis le savoir-faire relatif à la littérature-thématique en gérontologie. L’étude était exclusivement axée sur la littérature imprimée. Toutefoirs, aujourd’hui, aucune bibliographie ne serait complète sans aborder la nature diverse de la communication. À part la bibliographie traditionnelle « sur papier », il y a les vidéos, l’Internet et même le téléphone. (Phone Busters, géré par la Police provinciale de l’Ontario, fait des recherches sur le télémarketing frauduleux et les personnes âgées.) Je dois souligner que cette bibliographie n’est pas exhaustive, ce n’est qu’une «courte bibliographie » dans la tradition de l’excellente série publiée par la Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.

Therefore we once more would like to draw your attention to communicate your articles, books and other resources on Swahili studies to us so that the bibliographical section of the next Swahili Forum will be a treasure house again. "The bibliographic paradigm is not, as it was considered for a while, neither exclusively quantitative, nor exclusively technical, nor exclusively technological, nor obviously traditionalist"; (prof. Ion Stoica). A culture without bibliographic tools and without a current bibliographic exercise remains blind and bereft, both in the face of the past and in the face of the future. Bibliography organizes information from any field, on any subject or about any personality. Herder, referring to the spiritual specificity of historical epochs, asserted that they are composed of individualities and which, like epochs, must be examined and judged by reference to their specific “essence and aims”. We refer to our era, and “B.P. Hasdeu” Municipal Library, engaged civically, culturally and scientifically, practices the bibliographic tool and principle in its research activity. “B.P. Hasdeu” Municipal Library has a rich experience in bibliographic research. It has passed, since the 90s, from the recommended bibliography (bibliographic lists, bibliographic journals, bulletins of new entries) to scientific bibliographies - thematic, selective, biobibliographies, bibliographic monographs, critical, analytical, historical, current, retrospective, branch, etc.

Reference and bibliographic service is one of the main activities of the Central Science Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The main task of a bibliographer is to help users to find and analyze relevant and reliable information, as well as to develop their abilities to orient themselves within the sources of bibliographic information. Resumen
A reverse bibliography, i.e. a list of referring publications – is a dynamically compiled list of works published after the publication in question and contained a reference to it. Leading publishers of scientific journals, as a rule, post lists of referring publications on the web pages of their articles. In Russia, the placement of lists of citing publications has not yet become the norm, but it is gradually becoming widespread. The reverse bibliography is extremely interesting to the reader since it allows you to find out in which direction the research presented in the original edition is developing. A traditional bibliography, i.e. an ordinary bibliographic list of references, can successfully exist both in a printed publication and online. In contrast, the list of referring publications is essentially an exclusively online, dynamic structure formed “on the fly” on the screen of an online reader. The list of referring publications always brings the reader a fresh current state of accumulated bibliographic data. Publications appearing on the Internet and indexed in bibliographic databases containing a link to the scientific work in question in their bibliography are reflected here almost immediately. The implementation of the list of referring publications in a number of characteristic projects is considered. The terminology used is discussed.

Resumen
Being the all-Union coordination center for bibliography in technologies and the methodological center for USSR’s scientific and special libraries, the State Public Scientific and Technical Library of the USSR issued reference bibliographic publications, special periodicals, serials and manuals based on the research accomplished by the Library. It developed the system of learning materials in every area of library services and functions (user services, collection development and organization, reference aids, bibliographic work, etc.). All materials were highly demanded by scientific and technical libraries of the country and were of great importance for the advance of scientific, technical and special libraries and national librarianship on the whole. The author reviews the key reference bibliographic and methodological materials produced by the State Public Scientific and Technical Library of the USSR in 1958–1980.
