Resumen
Different contents of bismuth oxide doped in 3YSZ material and the mixed powder formed. After press forming, the samples were sintered at 850°C, 900°C, 1000°C and 1100°C respectively. The electrical properties, the thermal shock resistance, the phase components and the microstructure morphology were analyzed to study the solid solution mechanism of Bi2O3-Y2O3-ZrO2 three-phase system. It was found that the Bi2O3 can effectively reduce sintering temperature as a flux. Sintered at 1000°C, t-ZrO2 can be induced into m-ZrO2 by Bi2O3 doped. With the increasing of Bi2O3 content, system shock resistance decreases. The thermal shock resistance of the 2-3mol% Bi2O3-YSZ is the best. In the different content of Bi2O3 system, 3mol% doped materials has the highest conductivity.

Resumen
Bismuth oxide (monoclinic α-Bi2O3) and zirconium oxide (monoclinic ZrO2) are the most popular radiopacifiers in commercial Portland cement-based endodontic restoratives, yet their effects on the setting and hydration reactions are not fully understood. This study compares the impact of 20 wt.% of Bi2O3 or ZrO2 on the early hydration reactions and C–S–H gel structure of white Portland cement (WPC). Cement paste samples were hydrated at 37.5 °C prior to analysis by 29Si and 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy at 3 h and 24 h, and transmission electron microscopy at 3 h. Initial and final setting times were determined using a Vicat apparatus and reaction kinetics were monitored by isothermal conduction calorimetry. Bi2O3 was found to prolong initial and final setting times and retard the degree of hydration by 32% at 24 h. Heat evolution during the acceleration and deceleration phases of the hydration process was reduced and the exotherm arising from renewed ettringite formation was delayed and diminished in the presence of Bi2O3. Conversely, ZrO2 had no significant impact on either setting time; although, it accelerated hydration by 23% within 24 h. Increases in the mean silicate chain length and the extent of aluminum substitution in the C–S–H gel were observed in the presence of both radiopacifying agents after 24 h relative to those of the unblended WPC. The Bi2O3 and ZrO2 particles remained intact within the cement matrix and neither bismuth nor zirconium was chemically incorporated in the hydration products.

Resumen
Mineral trioxide aggregates (MTA) have been widely used in endodontic treatments, but after some time, patients suffer tooth discoloration due to the use of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) as a radiopacifier. Replacement of Bi2O3 with high energy ball-milled single (zirconia ZrO2; hafnia, HfO2; or tantalum pentoxide, Ta2O5) or binary oxide powder was attempted, and corresponding discoloration improvement was investigated in the present study. Bi2O3-free MTA is expected to exhibit superior discoloration. The radiopacity, diametral tensile strength, and discoloration of MTA-like cements prepared from the as-milled powder were investigated. Experimental results showed that MTA-like cements prepared using Ta2O5 exhibited a slightly higher radiopacity than that of HfO2 but had a much higher radiopacity than ZrO2. Milling treatment (30 min to 3 h) did not affect the radiopacities significantly. These MTA-like cements exhibited superior color stability (all measured ΔE00 < 1.0) without any perceptible differences after UV irradiation. MTA-like cements prepared using ZrO2 exhibited the best color stability but the lowest radiopacity, which can be improved by introducing binary oxide. Among the investigated samples, MTA-like cement using (ZrO2)50(Ta2O5)50 exhibited excellent color stability and the best overall performance with a radiopacity of 3.25 mmAl and a diametral tensile strength of 4.39 MPa.

Resumen
Powder mixtures of ?-Bi2O3 containing 2, 5 and 10 mole % of TiO2, ZrO2 or HfO2 were homogenized, heated at 820?C for 24 h and quenched in air. X-ray powder diffraction technique was used to characterize the prepared samples. In all cases metastable Bi2O3 polymorphs, ?-Bi2O3 or ?-Bi2O3, are found as single or major phases. Addition of Ti4+ ions stabilizes ?-Bi2O3 polymorph, while either Zr4+ or Hf4+ ions stabilize ?-Bi2O3 polymorph. In the samples with 2 and 5 mole % of TiO2 the presence of even two ?-Bi2O3 phases (Bi12TiO20 compound and a very low Ti-doped ?-Bi2O3) was established. Similarly, in the sample with 2 mole % of HfO2 two ?-Bi2O3 phases were found. Phase composition of prepared samples, values of unit cell parameters and the appearance of two polymorphs with identical crystal structure but different unit cell parameters are discussed and compared with known data.

Resumen
The aim of this study was to explored the effects of Fe2O3 and Bi2O3 on the color properties of a 3Y-TZP zirconia ceramics for dental application. Pigmented dental ZrO2 powders were prepared by mixing different concentration of Fe2O3 and Bi2O3, also in their combinations with 3Y-TZP powders. The mixture was compacted by isostastic pressure, then densely sintered. Color parameters were measured by Minolta CM2600d spectrophotometer. XRD was used to exam the structure of colored 3Y-TZP. Experimental results showed that the hue of the materials shift from yellow-green to yellow-red with the increasing concentration of the Fe2O3 and Bi2O3. Combined use of Fe2O3 and Bi2O3 could further decrease the L* value, which color scope was suitable for dental color matching. The XRD spectra showed only tetragonal phase was detected.

Resumen
Bi2O3 is a promising sintering additive for YSZ that not only decreases its sintering temperature but also increases its ionic conductivity. However, Bi2O3 preferably grows into large-sized rods. Moreover, the addition of Bi2O3 induces phase instability of YSZ and the precipitation of monoclinic ZrO2, which is unfavorable for the electrical property. In order to precisely control the morphology and size of Bi2O3, a microemulsion method was introduced. Spherical Bi2O3 nanoparticles were obtained from the formation of microemulsion bubbles at the water–oil interface due to the interaction between the two surfactants. Nanosized Bi2O3–YSZ composite powders with good mixing uniformity dramatically decreased the sintering temperature of YSZ to 1000 °C. Y2O3-stabilized Bi2O3 (YSB)–YSZ composite powders were also fabricated, which did not affect the phase of YSZ but decreased its sintering temperature. Meanwhile, the oxygen vacancy concentration further increased to 64.9% of the total oxygen with the addition of 5 mol% YSB. In addition, its ionic conductivity reached 0.027 S·cm−1 at 800 °C, one order of magnitude higher than that of YSZ. This work provides a new strategy to simultaneously decrease the sintering temperature, stabilize the phase and increase the conductivity of YSZ electrolytes.

Resumen
Pt/CeO2-ZrO2-Bi2O3-PbO/SBA-16 (SBA-16: Santa Barbara Amorphous No. 16) catalysts were synthesized to produce hydroxypyruvic acid by glycerol oxidation. In the catalysts, the introduction of PbO into CeO2-ZrO2-Bi2O3 improved the oxygen release and storage abilities owing to the synergistic redox reaction of Pb2+/4+ and Ce3+/4+, which facilitated the oxidation ability of Pt. In addition, the oxidation of the secondary OH group in glycerol might be accelerated by the geometric effects of glycerol, Pt, and Bi3+ or Pb2+/4+. Furthermore, the moderate reaction conditions such as room temperature and open-air atmosphere enabled the suppression of further oxidation of hydroxypyruvic acid. The highest catalytic activity was obtained for 7 wt% Pt/16 wt% Ce0.60Zr0.15Bi0.20Pb0.05O2−δ/SBA-16, which provided a hydroxypyruvic acid yield maximum of 24.6%, after the reaction for 6 h at 30 °C in atmospheric air.

A large memory window (MW) of [Formula: see text]8.6[Formula: see text]V and high defect traps of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text] were obtained at a low sweeping voltages of [Formula: see text]8[Formula: see text]V after 800∘C for 90[Formula: see text]s in O2 ambient. The devices of different RTA conditions were investigated to analyze the process of NCs traps formation by the X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Excellent retention characteristics of the room temperature were observed after 104[Formula: see text]s because of the deep defect traps and high quantum wells between CTL and tunneling oxide layer (TOL).

Resumen
Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) typically consists of Portland cement (75 wt.%), bismuth oxide (20 wt.%), and gypsum (5 wt.%) and is commonly used as endodontic cement. Bismuth oxide serving as the radiopacifying material reveals the canal filling effect after clinical treatment. In the present study, bismuth/zirconium oxide composite powder was prepared by high energy ball milling of (Bi2O3)100−x (ZrO2)x (x = 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt.%) powder mixture and used as the radiopacifiers within MTA. The crystalline phases of the as-milled powders were examined by the X-ray diffraction technique. The radiopacities of MTA-like cements prepared by using as-milled composite powders (at various milling stages or different amount of zirconia addition) were examined. In addition, the stability of the as-milled powders stored in an ambient environment, an electronic dry box, or a glove box was investigated. The experimental results show that the as-milled powder exhibited the starting powder phases of Bi2O3 and ZrO2 and the newly formed δ-Bi7.38Zr0.62O2.31 phase. The longer the milling time or the larger the amount of the zirconia addition, the higher the percentage of the δ-Bi7.38Zr0.62O2.31 phase in the composite powder. All the MTA-like cements prepared by the as-milled powder exhibited a radiopacity higher than 4 mmAl that is better than the 3 mmAl ISO standard requirement. The 30 min as-milled (Bi2O3)95(ZrO2)5 composite powder exhibited a radiopacity of 5.82 ± 0.33 mmAl and degraded significantly in the ambient environment. However, storing under an oxygen- and humidity-controlled glove box can prolong a high radiopacity performance. The radiopacity was 5.76 ± 0.08 mmAl after 28 days in a glove box that was statistically the same as the original composite powder.

Resumen
ZnO varistors of the excellent tolerance characteristics for electrical degradation were made by adding Bi2O3-MnO2-Co3O4-Cr2O3-SiO2-Sb2O3-NiO in ZnO. The tolerance characteristics for electrical degradation were evaluated by changing amount of ZrO2-additive. The evaluation methods are voltage-current characteristics, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy. Monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO2 and the compounds originated in Zr were observed at both grain boundaries and triple points. Moreover, the compounds originated in both Zr and Sb improved the tolerance characteristics for electrical degradation. On the other hand, especially monoclinic ZrO2 deteriorated the tolerance characteristics for electrical degradation. It is one key factor of the improvements of the tolerance characteristics for electrical degradation that the mobility of oxide ions or interstitial Zn2+ ions was hindered by forming the compounds contained Zr, Sb, Si, and, Bi atoms.

Resumen
Bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) is an effective additive used to enhance radiography resolution for dental materials. However, there are potential concerns regarding its biocompatibility and connection to tissue discoloration. In the present study, we modified the radiopacity properties of Bi2O3 with zirconium oxide (ZrO2) using a sol-gel process and investigated the composition, as well as the effects of heat treatment temperature using Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The harvested Bi2−xZrxO3+x/2 particles showed that the dominant phase transferred from α-Bi2O3 to β-Bi7.38Zr0.62O12.31 after a heat treatment of over 750 °C for 2 h. As the x values of Bi2−xZrxO3+x/2 increased from 0.2 to 1.0, more zirconium oxide precipitated onto the particle surface, thus enhancing the surface roughness of particles. For sol-gel Bi1.8Zr0.2O3.1 powders (x = 0.2), the radiopacity values became 4.90 ± 0.23 and 5.83 ± 0.22 mmAl after a heat treatment of 500 °C and 750 °C, respectively.

Resumen
A powder mixture of ?-Bi2O3 and HfO2, in the molar ratio 2:3, was mechanochemically treated in a planetary ball mill under air, using zirconium oxide vials and balls as the milling medium. After 50 h of milling, the mechanochemical reaction led to the formation of a nanocrystalline ?-Bi2O3 phase (fluorite-type solid solution Bi0.78Hf0.59Zr0.63O3.61), with a crystallite size of 20 nm. The mechanochemical reaction started at a very beginning of milling accompanied by an accumulation of ZrO2 arising from the milling tools. The samples prepared after various milling times were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and DSC analysis. The electrical properties of the as-milled and pressed Bi0.78Hf0.59Zr0.63O3.61 powder were studied using impedance spectroscopy in the temperature range from 100 to 700?C under air. The electrical conductivity was determined to be 9.43?10-6 and 0.080 S cm-1 for the temperatures of 300 and 700?C, respectively.

Resumen
Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical properties and bioactivity of two formulations of calcium silicate-based cements containing additives (CSCM) or resin (CSCR), associated with radiopacifying agents zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and niobium oxide (Nb2O5) as micro- and nanoparticles; calcium tungstate (CaWO4); and bismuth oxide (Bi2O3). MTA Angelus was used as control. Methods. Surface features and bioactivity were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and the chemical composition by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS-X). Results. CSCM and CSCR presented larger particle sizes than MTA. Hydroxyapatite deposits were found on the surface of some materials, especially when associated with the radiopacifier with ZrO2 nanoparticles. All the cements presented calcium, silicon, and aluminum in their composition. Conclusion. Both calcium silicate-based cements presented composition and bioactivity similar to MTA when associated with the radiopacifiers evaluated.

Resumen
Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of a calcium aluminate cement (EndoBinder) containing different radiopacifiers, Bi2O3, ZnO or ZrO2, compared with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA). According to ISO 10993-12:2012 (E) recommendations, 0.2 g of each cement were applied in transwell inserts and placed in 24-well culture plates containing 1 mL of culture medium (DMEM). After 24 h of incubation, the extracts (DMEM containing components released from the cements) were applied to immortalized odontoblast-like MDPC-23 cells. Cell viability (MTT test), alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), total protein production and cell morphology (Scanning Electron Microscopy - SEM) were evaluated. The volume of 50 µL of extract was used to determine the chemical elements released by the cements using Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The following groups were established (n=6): NC - negative control (without treatment); EB - EndoBinder without radiopacifier; EBBO - EndoBinder+Bi2O3; EBZnO - EndoBinder+ZnO; EBZrO - EndoBinder+ZrO2 and WMTA - White MTA. Data were subjected to statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis test, level of significance=5%). Cells exposed to the different versions of EndoBinder presented small reduction in viability, total protein production and ALP activity, with values similar to the NC and WMTA groups (p>0.05). Different elements (C, O, Na, Al, P, Si, Cl, Bi, K) released by the cements were detected in the extracts. However, the cells had no significant changes in their morphology. EndoBinder and MTA did not affect negatively the metabolism of the odontoblastic-like cells, showing it to be cytocompatible, irrespective of the used radiopacifier.

Resumen
Bacgroun/Aim. The radiopacity of an endodontic material can considerably vary as measured on film and a digital sensor. Digital radiography offers numerous advantages over convential film-based radiography in dental clinical practice regarding both diagnostic capabilities and postintervention procedures. The aim of this study was to investigate the capacity of conventional and charge-conpled device (CCD) based digital radiography to detect material on radiograph depending on the radio-pacifying agent present in the material. Methods. Experimental cements were formulated by mixing Portland cement with the following radiopacifying agents: zinc oxide (ZnO), zirconium oxide (ZrO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2), barium sulphate (BaSO4), iodoform (CHI3), bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) and ytterbium trifluoride (YbF3). In addition, 5 endodontic materials comprising Endomethasone?, Diaket?, N2?, Roth 801? and Acroseal? were investigated to serve as control. Per three specimens of each material were radiographed alongside an aluminum step wedge on film (Eastman Kodak Company?, Rochester, NY) and a CCD-based digital sensor (Trophy Radiologie?, Cedex, France). Radiopacity values were calculated by converting the radiographic densities of the specimens expressed as a mean optical densities or mean grey scale values into equivalent thickness of aluminum. Results. Twoway ANOVA detected no significant differences with respect to the imaging system (p > 0.05), but the differences were significant with respect to radiopacifier (p < 0.001) and the interaction of the two factors (p < 0.05). Paired ttest revealed significant differences between the methods used for pure Portland cement, all concentrations of BaSO4 and CHI3, 10% and 20% additions of ZrO2 and Bi2O3 and 10% and 30% addition of YbF3 (p < 0.05). Conclusion. The materials which incorporate CHI3 or BaSO4 as radiopacifying agents are expected to be significantly more radiopaque on a digital sensor than on film. During clinical practice one should concern to the quality of contrast assessement obtained by digital according to conventional radiography.

Resumen
Variation of microstructures and ionic conductivities in (Bi2O3)0.75(Y2O3)0.25 (YSB) modified electrolyte of 8 mol% Y 2 O 3 stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) and YSB modified codoped zirconia ( ZrO 2)0.92( Y 2 O 3)0.075( MgO )0.005 (YSZM) is investigated in this work. The results demonstrated that a small amount of δ-YSB addition is effective in reducing the sintering temperature of 8YSZ from 1500 to 1200°C and promoting the densification rate of ceramics. Compared to 8YSZ electrolyte, it is interesting that a very limited amount of monoclinic ZrO2 was observed due to the MgO stabilizer in YSB modified codoped zirconia electrolyte. Besides, enhancement of ionic conductivity in δ-YSB modified codoped zirconia is evidently increased by 67% in comparison to the specimen of 8YSZ electrolyte.

Resumen
The effects of adding Sb to a BiMnCoSiCrNiYZr-added ZnO varistor (with the same composition as a commercial varistor) on the varistor voltage, leakage current, and resistance to electrical degradation were investigated. Bi is incorporated in spinel particles, and δ-Bi2O3eventually disappears with the addition of small amounts of Bi, especially as the amount of Sb2O3added increased. Reduction in both the nonlinearity index and the amount of δ-Bi2O3for small amounts of added Bi with the addition of more than approximately 1.25 mol% Sb2O3demonstrates that Sb inhibits Bi2O3from forming deep interfacial impurity levels at the grain boundaries. The sample containing 1.2 mol% Bi2O3, 1.0 mol% ZrO2, 1.0 mol% Y2O3, and 1.5 mol% Sb2O3added exhibits a high varistor voltage (approximately 630 V/mm), high resistance to electrical degradation and low leakage current.

Resumen
Phase equilibrium and electrochemical studies of the ternary system Bi–Sr–O indicate the presence of six ternary oxides (Bi2SrO4, Bi2Sr2O5, Bi2Sr3O6, Bi4Sr6O15, Bi14Sr24O52, and Bi2Sr6O11) and three solid solutions (δ, β, and γ). An isothermal section of the phase diagram is established at 1050 K by phase analysis of quenched samples. Three compounds, Bi4Sr6O15, Bi14Sr24O52, and Bi2Sr6O11, contain Bi5+ ions. The stability of these phases is a function of oxygen partial pressure. The chemical potentials of SrO in two-phase fields are determined as a function of temperature using solid-state cells based on single crystal SrF2 as the electrolyte. Measurement of the emf of cells based on SrF2 as a function of oxygen partial pressure in the gas at constant temperature gives information on oxygen content of the compounds present at the electrodes. The chemical potentials of Bi2O3 in two-phase fields of the pseudobinary Bi2O3–SrO are measured using cells incorporating (Y2O3)ZrO2 as the solid electrolyte. The standard free energies of formation of the ternary oxides are calculated independently using emfs of different cells. The independent assessments agree closely; the maximum difference in the value of of component binary oxides. The results are discussed in the light of the phase diagram and compared with calorimetric and chemical potential measurements reported in the literature. The combined use of emf data from cells incorporating fluoride and oxide electrolytes enhances the reliability of derived data.
