Texto completoIn the middle of the 18th century, la Franche-Comté joined the network of learned societies whose objective was to contribute “to the progress of science and to the perfection of talents”: an academy of sciences, belles lettres and arts was established in Besançon. Comtois academicians thus undertook many works and were committed to promoting the emulation of their fellow citizens by regularly organizing competitions. The company’s handwritten archives, which today are kept in the Besançon municipal library and may be consulted on line in digitized form, bear witness to this activity, which continued until 1789. Conducted from a literary viewpoint, the exploration of these vast archival collections has made it possible to select a sample of previously unpublished speeches and to propose a critical edition of them. The encomium genre, closely linked to the academic institution, was worthy of our undertaking this transcription and annotation work : thus, we find in this work a series of epideictic plays, composed by the academicians themselves or by individuals having close ties to the academy through their role as clergymen or their participation in competitions. We sought in particular to unravel the sources and the influences of these various productions, to analyze their originality and style, while providing the historical clarification needed to understand them, the epideictic genre lending itself freely to the use of allusions. The study thus highlights the presence of literary eloquence in Franche-Comté on the eve of the French revolution, and the efforts to appropriate its general codes by the scholars of the province

Texto completoIn 1663, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Superintendant of the King’s Buildings, gathered a small team composed of members of the Académie Française: the petite Académie was born. Entrusted with the responsibility of writing the history of the Roi Soleil (Louis xiv) in tokens, inscriptions and medals, it soon became an essential actor of royal propaganda. In 1701, it was institutionalised and became the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres (Royal Academy of Inscriptions and Letters). In the early 18th century, the institution started to add some finer historical studies to its panegyric task. The Académie, a royal institution, then became a reflection of the figure of the Lettered Prince. It thus became an essential link in the Republic of Letters. The way this academy functioned during a century reflects a changing world, between the values of the Grand Siècle (17th century) and the innovations of the period of Enlightment in the 18th century

Texto completoThe memoirs of the Academy of Letters and Literature are an invaluable testament to the relationship between Europe and China during the years 1700-1750. Three major areas emerge from these studies carried out mainly by Nicolas Fréret and Etienne Fourmont : language, literature and history. They have tried to find answers to questions raised during many debates in intellectual circles. Fréret gathered historical facts learned from Chinese literature and has analyzed them in detail. He concluded that the Chinese language is not a philosophical language, and that the Chinese chronology is authentic, but it does not go further back than 2000 BC. Fourmont, concentrated on linguistic studies, is known as a great Orientalist, especially for writing a French-Chinese dictionary and a Chinese grammar

Texto completoThis study meant as a contribution to the history of the methods and the contents of teaching in France, aims at analysing this teaching at the time when the first "lycees" were founded, throughi a scrutany of the works of Louis de Fontanes who wrote the 1803 official directives for schools, and later became great master of the Imperial university. The study of his career - he was a poet ranked among the best before 1789, a journalist involved in the revolution, a professor, a member of the "Institut", a law-maker and the president of the legislative body under the consulate - enables us to bring out the aesthetic and social options that prevailed when the "lycees" were first started. As a son of the enlightenment, Fontanes welcomed the earlier reforms passed by the constituante, but the revolutionary violences made him an active supporter of the anti-jacobinite and monarchist reaction. As a result, the 1803 curriculum reflects both his movement away from the "philosophical" liberties and his proclaimed fidelity to the literary tradition derived from the ancients and french classicisl; and it also mirrors his experience as a writer and his meditation on the literary heritage

Texto completoThe subject handles the member's correspondence of the Rouen's Society during the age of enlightenment. This correspondence underlines in a first time, the relationship that the elite of Rouen etablished between them and with the scientists and the men of letters of the kingdom, and the regulations of the Rouen's Society in the eightteenth century. In a second time, these letters bring out the place and the function of the Rouen's Society from a geographic point of view and opposite the expectations of the elite of the kingdom beside her. Last, the correspondence highlights the personality of the academician, his main political and intellectual preoccupations, his behaviour opposite the events that have affected the kingdom in the eighteenth century

Texto completoThis thesis takes his origin from the reflection about a really singular feature that makes the novel I promessi sposi a unicum in italian literature. Since his first release, the text has been read aloud and listened in many and different occasions. Therefore, it has been tried to find the existence in the novel of some features that make it so suited to be listened to. A direct consequence of the novel's “listenability” is his typical “memorability”, that makes it really easy for the reader-listener to remember episodes and entire portions of the text. Thus, the thesis is composed of two sections, connected each other, but dedicated the one, in a more specific way, to the first feature at issue (“listenability”) and the other to the second (“memorability”).

Texto completoThis study concerns all the texts published in the parisian "literary" press from 1944 to 1960 and relating to belgium, focusing on french-written and dutch-written literary productions. By considering them products of discursive practices, the study aims to detect the principles of organization and classification of belgian productions in relation to french productions, which leads one to question the social use of literature in both france and belgium. The theory of fields contributes to ap- prehend in an appropriate way the practices under study. The analyzed texts are "prises de position" mediating certain principles peculiar to the literary field and to the field of "literary" press. First, the three weeklies are located in the latter. Then, each forms the subject of an analysis focusing on general texts on (an aspect of) belgium, then on (meta)texts taken from literary columns, taking into account the recognition of (national) specificities, the editorial programme and the genders. Finally, the discourses of belgian contributors are studied with respect to their trajectories and to the logics of the french fields involved. The entire corpus is marked by the dominated status of the belgian francophone "literature". The french texts are codetermined by a universalist and humanist vision on (french) culture, peculiar to french fields. Each weekly's position brings about aesthetical and political divergences. The belgian contributors deny or avoid bringing out an own identity

Texto completos narratives. 44 middle school children (aged 12-15) were given a set of paper-pen activities including one divergent thinking test, one convergent thinking test and a story to be completed. Results of the divergent and convergent thinking tests were taken as the predictors to estimate the potential for creative thinking. Children were examined in terms of how they encode rhetorical relations in their writings. Whether a creative potential made a difference in children&rsquo
s writings in terms of rhetorical relations they used, and whether children within the same creative potential group used the same rhetorical relations in common were investigated. Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) (Marcu, 2000 and Carlson and Marcu, 2001) was used in coding children&rsquo
s writings. It was found that children in the study interpreted story writing as an act of attribution. This result is contrary to Marcu et.al (1999b), who found the elaboration-additional relation as the most frequent relation in their corpora. The study also found that there was an inverse relationship between the convergent thinking scores and the number of satellites (an EDU (elementary discourse unit) playing an auxilliary role for a text in question) for the 7th graders. Finally, it was found that high quartile (highest scorers in the study, top 25%) convergent thinkers were able to construct a narrative element with few number of EDUs and few number of discourse relation types.

Texto completoThe book subscription was a phenomenon that covered almost all Europe in the 19th century. It grew up in England in the second half of 17th century and quickly extended over the Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium and other countries where in the 19th century was transformed into commercial practice related mainly to the distribution of books. In Southeastern Europe this practice was adopted in 18th century, at first in Greece, then in Serbia, Romania, as well as in Bulgaria since 1806. This research is based entirely on the Bulgarian sources (78 printed book subscription lists) and cover the period 1806–1856, which can be defined as early modern times for Bulgaria. Originality of the research approach find expression in the using of the data from these lists, for the first time completely processed, as a source of information and data to demonstrate, with the help of other supporting texts, the place of the book subscription in three main areas related to the sociocultural situation in 19th century: the archaic practice of donation, perceived as a “total social fact”, which sets the book subscription in the field of cultural continuity; its role in the process of establishing the cultural and literary norm of the period; its importance as a primary source for the study of readers, enabling introduction of a more precise term ‘perceivers’ audience’ composed of a core of readers and periphery of readers and listeners; an analysis of geographical and social distribution of books which proved the urban character of the Bulgarian National Revival, emphasizing sacred character attributed to the book by Bulgarians in 19th century

Texto completoAmong the great names of the scottish enlightenment, adam smith, lord kames (henry home), and hugh blair illustrate very well the relationship between literature and the other divisions of knowledge. The teaching of "belles lettres" , ins@ired in terms as in spirit, by french neo-classicism, emerges in edinburgh in the wake of smith' first lectures. Helped by various literary societies, the movement plays an important part in disseminating a valuable linguistic knowledge. The old rhetoric is saved by the observation of the human context of communication. With kames, rhetoric becomes a part of the new "science of man". It promotes under blair a new definition of classics which heralds, through its success in europe and the united states, the modern teaching of literary history. By the end of its develoment, it allows a world-ambitious brand of scottish writing to emerge within the new "british" cultural condominium

Texto completoMetallic history has led to a certain number of critical publications which have mainly focused on the numismatic value of the Petite Académie project, somehow moving away from the created book to concentrate on the metal. Although doser studies have recently been made of the book, its literary and historiographical dimension has seldom been raised. Thus The history in the book of medals of Louis the Fourteenth has corne into being. Therefore, this study intends to place the academicians work in a traditional historiographical context where antique codes prevail. The book clearly takes its inspiration from them while toying with them, magnifying or ruling them out depending on what they could bring to the glory of absolutism. The importance of the writers in this collective work should also be mentioned. They will progressively be moved aside as printing time gets doser. The institutionai framework will be pushed in the background, behind the king. However, it remains eue that the debates conducted within the minutes show the individuality of each writer at the origin of the creation. Finally, as the making of the book is based on a certain number of reforms and pre-established rules, its evolution will be explained. In Tact, the writing principles endure from the manuscripts to the publications and yet they may evolve into new ways of expression as the writing proceeds. Despite everything they may contradict one another in their application and have then to prove adaptable

Texto completoGuyton de Morveau is mainly known as one of Lavoisier’s collaborators in the reform of the chemical nomenclature. The origin of this partnership is generally described as the result of Guyton's conversion to the new chemical theory of Lavoisier. But an inquiry into his scientific and teaching activities reveals that it seems more reasonable to see the relationship between these two chemists as a convergence of efforts to lead to a satisfactory explanation of the new phenomena observed in laboratory. Guyton enjoyed a wide international recognition. His reputation was based on the breadth and depth of his theoretical thought and on the quality of his experimental work. Close to Macquer, Guyton understood all chemical reactions in terms of dissolution and crystallization processes governed by the law of gravitation. His theoretical framework combining the fire-phlogiston doctrine of Rouelle’s disciples with Boerhaave's views on solvents allowed him to account for most new experimental discoveries. Guyton built up his reputation through his editorial activity and his courses of chemistry. Students came from all over Europe to Dijon to attend his courses. His pedagogical activity constitutes a good example of the importance of the teaching of chemistry in a provincial academy during the second half of the 18th century. During the Revolution, Guyton de Morveau entered in politics and took an active part in the reorganization of the French research and educational system of Republican France
