Texto completoThis thesis concerns the treatment of radioactive wastewaters, specifically 90Sr containing highly saline effluents. Two types of Ba2+ containing ion exchange materials were examined as possible Sr sorbents: a barium titanate and a barium zeolite LTA. The extractants originality lies in its double extraction mechanism. Firstly, the majority of the Sr present in the solution is removed via ion exchange with the Ba present in the sorbent. A secondary process then sees the now free Ba precipitate onto the sorbents surface as BaSO4. The effluent itself is the sulfate source. This precipitation reaction initiates a second coprecipitation reaction with the remaining Sr. Strontium coprecipitation with barium sulfate is crucial to leading to a high strontium selectivity in the presence of calcium. This thesis outlines a mechanistic and comparative study which will hopefully open the way to the development of new strontium selective sorbents. The barium zeolite, which is more efficient (higher capacity and selectivity) than the barium titanate for treatment of saline effluents, was evaluated for use in industrial type processes (stirred reactor and column). Experiments conducted with variable supersaturation or molar ratio [SO4]/[Ba] allowed us to identify optimal conditions for the use of barium zeolite powders in batch type stirred reactor. These results demonstrate the potential of this material to replace the current coprecipitation process in stirred reactors, which is carried out in effluent treatment plants. Barium zeolite beads were also evaluated for effluent treatment in a column type continuous process. Ion diffusion kinetics in the material were shown to be limiting for this continuous process. The material shaping has still to be optimized. Keywords: decontamination, strontium, selectivity, ion exchange, titanate, zeolite LTA, coprecipitation, barium sulfate

Texto completoFerroelectric based compounds present a wide range of properties which are from great fundamental and industrial interest on nanoscale. Ferroelectric based compounds possesses strong coupling between polarization, stress, electric field and temperature and are nowadays already used in capacitors, memories, sensors, and actuators. In order to understand the relationship between microstructure and the outstanding properties, numerical methods able to simulate at nanoscale are disired. For this propose, the Polarizable Ion Model (PIM) is employed that treats the ions as polarizable species with nominal charge. In comparison to current modelisation techniques, the use of nominal charges should facilitate the inclusion of various materials composition and the study of defect and surface effects. The pametrization of the model is derived by a fit on ab initio DFT reference calculations. For a first step towards ferroelectric modelling with PIM, the focus lies on the developpment of an interaction potential for the prototyp ferroelectric BaTiO3. BaTiO3 presents a complex phase transition sequence (rhombohedral, orthorhombic, tetragonal, cubic) that is related to small energy differences of the order of some meV/formula unit. Thus, the development of a reliable interaction potential requires high precision and a correct description of the balance between short range and long range interactions. It has been demonstrated during this work that for an accurate representation of the short range forces asymmetric size effects of the electron cloud with respect to the nucleus would be necessary. As such size effects are not included in the PIM, compensation errors in the fitting procedure between short range and long range interactions are allowed in order to obtain the best global fit. The developed PIM model reproduces several zero temperature properties of BaTiO3. At finite temperature the PIM predicts the rhombohedral phase to be stable up to 160K. In the temperature range between 160K and 210K strong fluctuations in polarization and cell parameters are observed and no well-defined phase can be distinguished. From 210K on, the average paraelectric cubic phase is reached

A series of Barium Titanate thin films were fabricated under different deposition conditions by ion-assisted deposition method with two ion sources which the working voltage are 40-50V. And a lot of investigations were made to understand the characteristics of the films. The structure of the films are amorphous at lower deposition temperature (room temperature to 200 degree C).The ferroelectric Barium Titanate thin films were sandwiched between ITO and Au electrodes in a metal-insulator- metal(MIM) configuration in order to proceed C-V and P-E measurements. The dielectric constant of the films deposited at room temperature is 61(at 1kHz). However,it increases to 77 as the substrate temperature increases from room temperature to 100 degree C. The results of the P-E measurement present the typical hysteresis phenomenon for the ferroelectric materials.

Ion-sensitive field effect transistors (ISFET’s) have many advantages than the conventional ion selective electrode because of the small size of their sensitive area, robustness, rapid response, high sensitivity, low output impedance, low sample volumes, batch processing capability, low cost and the potential for on-chip circuit integration. The main part of an ISFET is the usual metal oxide silicon field effect transistor(MOSFET) with the gate electrode replaced by chemically sensitive membrane, electrolyte and a reference electrode (RE). Like in MOSFET, the channel resistance in ISFET depends on the electric field perpendicular to the direction of the current. Charges from solution accumulate on top of this insulating membrane and do not pass through the ion-sensitive membrane. Hence, the pH value of the solution can be detected by the ISFET. In this thesis, the barium titanate (BaTiO3) thin film was prepared by sol-gel method to be the sensor gate of ISFET. The barium titanate thin films were deposited on SiO2(1000Å)/p-Si substrates by spin-on coating method, and the EIS structure was obtained. The flat-band voltage(ΔVBF) can be shifted by C-V measurement. The optimum conditions were found that the fluxing temperature was 110℃ and fluxing time was 4.5 hours, and firing temperature was about 340℃ and thin film thickness was about 1μm, and the sensitivity of 55.8 mV/pH in the range of pH1~pH11 can be obtained.
