Resumen
Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) is the most important pathogenic Mycoplasma spp. causing avian mycoplasmosis and brought about huge economic losses to poultry industry in Bangladesh. The present study was undertaken to know the seroprevalence of MG in layer birds in three different geographical areas of southern Barishal division, Bangladesh. Total 310 sera samples were collected from wing vein of 30 farms for this study. Sera samples were tested with Rapid Serum Agglutination (RSA) for MG using commercial Antigen Kit (manufactured by Lillidale Diagnostic) to detect the presence of antibodies against MG. The overall seroprevalence of MG by RSA was 36.13%. Seroprevalence of MG infection was dominant in winter season (45.54%) and significantly highest occurrence was recorded in age groups from 20-40 weeks of layer chickens (51.79%). Serological investigation in three different upazila of Barishal division showed the highest infection rate (45.26%) in medium scale flocks (1000-3000) in comparison to (21.43%) small (<1000) flocks. The seroprevalence of MG was highest in Swarupkathi (44.38%) than in Barishal Sadar (26%) and Banaripara upazila (28%). Biosecurity and managemental failure is the overall risk factor in all types of farm due to lack of proper knowledge among farmer. This study reveals the current scenario of mycoplasmosis in layer birds of three different areas of Barishal division. Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. 2021, 7 (3), 292-297

Resumen
Leaf blight of caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae is a severe disease of litchi saplings, which is considered as a threat for raising healthy sapling of the fruit in Bangladesh. A survey was conducted to find out incidence and severity of the disease in five regions of Bangladesh namely Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Mymensingh, Barishal and Khagrachari. The highest disease incidence was recorded in Dinajpur and Kagrachari regions and the lowest in Mymensingh region. On the other hand, the highest disease severity was found in Dinajpur and Kagrachari regions and the lowest in Mymensingh region. Another experiment was conducted to determine genetic diversity of the causal bacterium following molecular study. Twenty five diseased samples of bacterial leaf blight of litchi were collected from 25 locations in five regions and one isolate of P. syringae pv. syringae was isolated from each sample. The values of pair-wise comparisons of Nei’s (1972) genetic distance among5 different locations of P. syringae pv. syringae were computed. From the UPGMA dendrogram drawn on the basis of Nei’s (1972) genetic distances and comparatively the highest genetic distance (0.9163) was observed in Khajrachari vs Barishal, Mymensingh vs Barishal and Rajshahi vs Mymensingh but Dinajpur was close to the Barishal with the least genetic distance (0.3567). Thus, the results indicate that remarkable genetic diversity exists among the isolates of P. syringae pv. syringae from different origins Bangladesh. Resumen
The study was concerned with the chemical composition of two varieties hog-plum Pulp collected from Mymensingh and Barishal and developed jelly and leather. Cabinet dryer, model OV-165 (Gallen Kamp Company) was used for dehydration of two types of hog-plum pulp and leather. The fresh and dried hog-plum and hog-plum products were analyzed for their moisture, ash, vitamin-C, pH, total soluble solids and sucrose contents. The moisture content, ash, vitamin C, pH, total soluble solid (TS), reducing sugar and non-reducing sugar of Barishal hog-plum’s was 83.84% (wb), 0.81% , 33.00 mg/100g, 2.62, 8.5%, 5.02% and 1.6% respectively; Mymensingh hog-plum’s was 86.69% (wb), 0.78%, 30.90 mg/100g, 2.7, 6.5%, 4.7% and 1.3% respectively. The chemical composition of Mymensingh and Braishal hog-plum showed that Barishal hog-plum contained higher solid content, ash, Vitamin C than Mymensingh hog-plum. It was found that Barishal hog-plum had higher flesh (67.59%) than Mymensingh hog-plum (62.60%). The chemical composition of hog-plum leather was analyzed for moisture, Ash, Vitamin C, TS, Titrable acidity, total sugar and protein content. The ash and sugar content of developed leathers from Barishal and Mymensingh hog-plum was very similar but the vitamin C content for developed products was very low. It was also found developed products contained higher amount and sugar and protein. It was found that the chemical compositions of developed jelly were more or less similar to the fresh hog-plum; only the vitamin C was decreased significantly. These studies indicate that, developed products viz. lather and jelly would contain significantly higher amount of nutrients and energy then the fresh fruits. Organoleptic taste testing using 1-9 hedonic scale showed that jelly made from mechanically dried Mymensingh hog-plum was the most acceptable product and was ranked as “like very much”. Leather made from Mymensingh hog-plum (pulp+4.5% sugar+ 0.15% KMS) was the best among other samples and was ranked as “like very much”.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jesnr.v5i2.14598 J. Environ. Resumen
Climate change is one of the world's major issues and its impact particularly on migration is attracting increased attention for policymakers and experts. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of climate change on human migration and to highlight the number of migrants in Bangladesh's coastal areas. The research was carried out in the Barishal division's Barguna, Barishal, Bhola, Jhalokati, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, and Khulna division's Khulna, Bagerhat, and Satkhira districts using focus group discussion (FGD), key informant’s interview (KII) and secondary data sources. The research findings are based on both primary data and secondary data gathered from various sources, which were conducted in nine coastal districts of Bangladesh from mid-February to mid-March 2020. This paper contains mapping by analyzing secondary information using ArcGIS 10 software of Geographic Information System technology. The study revealed the scenario of human migration and displacement in nine southwest districts due to different natural calamities like cyclones, riverbank erosion, floods, storm surges, and salinity intrusion. From household survey it was found that coastal erosion influenced about 74.73% people and floods forced only 3.51% of people to migrate. From 2014 to 2020, the highest and lowest disaster induced migrants have been found in 2017 and 2020. In addition, from 2014 to 2020, maximum and minimum migrants were in Barishal, and Jhalokati, separately in a row. In 2020, maximal and minimal number of migrants have been noted in Patuakhali and Satkhira with 38715 and 1900 migrants, respectively with the maximum disaster-induced migration in Barishal division. This research would be a great source of information for future investigations concerning human migration and displacement across the coastal districts of Bangladesh.

Resumen
Incidence of insect pests and their associated natural enemies was investigated from July 2017- June 2018 at six locations (Gazipur, Rajshahi, Barishal, Sonagazi, Rangpur, Cumilla) of Bangladesh to identify their major occurrence period as well as their incidence in three rice growing seasons, (Aus, T. Aman, and Boro). Among the tested locations, marked differences were found in the composition of insect pest and natural enemies. Higher number of pest population was found at Gazipur with 80,000 individuals for insect pest and 40,000 individuals for natural enemies. At least one peak for major insect pest and natural enemies suggested their specific occurrence period across the locations. Among the insect pests, major peak of GLH was found at Gazipur and Rajshahi during T. Aman season with 4,000 individuals for each location. In contrast, BPH population was as high as 10,000 individuals for Gazipur in October during T. Aman season. Additionally, it was high at Rajshahi in October and November with around 2,000 individuals of BPH. For WBPH, one major peak was found in October at Gazipur and Rajshahi with 10,000 and 2,000 individuals respectively. For YSB, it was higher at Rajshahi in October with over 6,000 individuals during T. Aman season. Moreover, one major peak also observed in Barishal with over 2,000 individuals in November. Among natural enemies, CDB population was observed mainly at three locations in between October and November with 900 individuals for Gazipur, 400 individuals for Rajshahi and 200 individuals for Barishal during T. Aman season. In contrast, for STPD population, two major peaks were found in Barishal with 6,000 and 5,000 individuals in December and March respectively during Boro season. For GMB population, it was observed at Gazipur in November with more than 20,000 individuals during T. Aman season whereas Rajshahi had around 2,000 individuals in the same month. However, higher incidence of GLH, BPH, and WBPH at Gazipur and Rajshahi suggested availability of insect pests during T. Aman season. In contrast, higher YSB incidence at Barishal and Rajshahi indicated their abundance in those areas. On the other hand, incidence of natural enemies at Gazipur indicated presence of greater biological control compared with other locations. In future, this information could serve as a reliable source in strengthening rice pest monitoring services as well as effective pest control in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Rice j. 2019, 23(1): 35-43

Sakdan, Mohd Foad. "Conflict management in the Barisan Nasional (1974-1999) with special reference to Penang and Kedah". Thesis, University of Hull, 2006. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:8631.

Texto completo
Resumen
The aim of this thesis is to examine conflict management in the Barisan Nasional from 1974 to 1999. The core of the study focuses on the conflict management during the seat allocation process in elections and the allocation of cabinet posts at federal government level and state Exco level in Penang and Kedah. To elaborate on these two focal points, five main objectives aimed at uncovering the contributing factors to the Barisan Nasional's stability and solidarity to continue ruling a multiethnic society. A total of 28 political figures in the BN and two from opponent parties were identified as interviewees. Results of this study revealed that the Barisan Nasional employed its own, unique approach in handling conflicts. Firstly, Power-sharing shows that the Barisan Nasional applies a formula for seat allocation using three stringent processes to ensure that each of its components receives a fair allocation of seats commensurate with the performance and strength of the party. For the allocation of cabinet and Exco posts, each party is provided with the opportunity and position to hold the post, so that each component party would have an avenue of participation in the development of policies and direction of the national administration. Secondly, the principles practised within the Barisan Nasional, which includes decision-making procedures, the representativeness and confidentiality of discussions on seat allocation and Cabinet/Exco post allocation, are confined only to the main elite groups of the component parties. The involvement and knowledge of other party members, especially those at branch and divisional levels, are extremely limited and restricted in these areas. Thirdly, in the process of allocating seats and Cabinet/Exco posts, some bargaining inevitably takes place, usually by two parties, namely a component party of the Barisan Nasional and an NGO. There are four factors contributing to this bargaining. The scope of this bargaining also involves four areas. Fourthly, the management of conflict in seat and Cabinet/Exco post allocations demonstrates that the Barisan Nasional continuously faces various challenges from time to time. Seven different challenges are outlined, and these often pose as elements that threaten the strength and stability of the Barisan Nasional. The control of these elements is important in ensuring that the Barisan Nasional continues to be sound and stable, whilst failure would put the Barisan Nasional in a quagmire of difficulties in continuing to defend its power. Finally to manage the conflict on seat and Cabinet/Exco post allocations, the Barisan Nasional applies four levels of review. At each level, the conflict is assessed and analysed to ensure that if can be handled well and comprehensively to the satisfaction and justice of all parties involved. In addition, the Barisan Nasional also practises five approaches in managing these conflicts. The study findings provide a comprehensive documentation of the techniques applied by the BN in managing conflicts, and it is hoped that it would describe to the public how each party played its role in maintaining political stability whilst serving as guidelines to countries facing interethnic conflict.

Willcox, Douglas R. "Metadrama and Antitheatricality in Shakespeare’s King Lear and Troilus and Cressida". Scholar Commons, 2008. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/565.

Texto completo
Resumen
Shakespeare uses metadrama as a rhetorical vehicle for responding to antitheatricalism; realistic drama and staged theatricality therefore coexist in his plays. The cultural context of the early modern era, especially its antitheatrical rhetoric and the predominance of theatricality throughout the structures of its society, illumines the interaction of metadrama and antitheatricality Shakespeare's plays, particularly Troilus and Cressida and King Lear. By failing to consider adequately the unique nature of the emergence of early modern theater and the equally distinct reaction to its popularity, previous scholarship considering antitheatricality has exhibited essentialism and a universalizing tendency similar to that of the antitheatricalists. The paucity of specifically protheatrical response in prose to the immense antitheatrical work of polemicists such as William Prynne and to antitheatrical tracts and publications signals the presence of protheatrical response within the literature of the stage: its plays. Metadramatic critics have noted that metadrama provides a subtle means of establishing a connection between actors and their audience and that it serves as a means of interrogating various deployments of theatrical power and the motives implied by its use. Troilus and Cressida celebrates, interrogates, and reproves the theater, engaging the proponents and detractors of the theater through depictions of Ulysses and Pandarus as effective and ineffective interior directors, respectively. Ulysses's militaristic drive toward victory at all costs demonstrates his affinity to the figure of the stage Machiavel, while his seemingly inexplicable hostility toward Achilles similarly marks his connection to the figure of the Vice. Pandarus's relation to theatricality highlights the negative associations of theater and prostitution apparent in the works of the antitheatricalists. His self-delusory propensity to motivate others to actions to which they are already predisposed mocks and calls into question the assertion that theater exerts motivational power over its audience. Literary critics considering King Lear observe that identity loss underpins the tragic process apparent in the plays' protagonists. Depictions of staged theatrical ability and inability and positive depictions of antitheatrical Puritanism pervade King Lear. The deployment of theatricality in the play both emphasizes its creative and soteriological function and embodies the harmful potential of dramaturgical art.

Anderson, Robyn. "Developing a pathway out of poverty in the Global Coffee Production Network - a case study of employment creation for baristas in the speciality coffee industry". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/25185.

Texto completo
Resumen
With a narrowly defined unemployment rate of 26.5% in South Africa, this paper contributes to the salient task of exploring a job creation programme in a high growth sector of the global coffee production network, namely the production of espresso based beverages by baristas for sale in restaurants, cafes, and hotels. Situated in the qualitative paradigm with an inductive research agenda, this research utilises the case study method to explore Ground UP, a skills training programme of a local not-for-profit, which provides barista skills training that unemployed people can use to become economically active in context of the specialty coffee industry. By applying the concepts of upgrading in the context of a global production network and a descriptive focus on both the Ground UP programme, as well as the characteristics and dynamics specialty coffee industry in South Africa, this research examines the potential for this industry to offer a pathway out of poverty. Applying a theoretical lens to this descriptive case study, the theme of governance features strongly, and the analysis reveals that Ground UP, as an agent of palliative development, can help beneficiaries to access a pathway out of poverty. It is also argued that the extent to which they will be able to capture the gains in the specialty coffee industry in the longer term will be impacted on external factors and other key players in the industry as well as their positioning in a global production network.

Straw, Eric M. "Construction of a Conceptualization of Personal Knowledge within a Knowledge Management Perspective using Grounded Theory Methodology". Thesis, Nova Southeastern University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3590345.

Texto completo
Resumen

The current research used grounded theory methodology (GTM) to construct a conceptualization of personal knowledge within a knowledge management (KM) perspective. The need for the current research was based on the use of just two categories of knowledge, explicit and tacit, within KM literature to explain diverse characteristics of personal knowledge. The construct of tacit knowledge has often been explicated and debated in KM literature. The debate over tacit knowledge arose from the complex epistemological roots of tacit knowing and the construct of tacit knowledge popularized by organizational knowledge creation theory. The ongoing debate over tacit knowledge in KM literature has shed little light on personal knowledge within a KM perspective. The current research set aside the debate over tacit knowledge and pursued the construct of personal knowledge from the perspective of the knower using GTM. Thirty-seven interviews were conducted with fourteen participants. Interviews were audio recorded and coding was accomplished with the qualitative data analysis software MAXQDA.

A total of eight categories were identified. These were organized into two groups. The core category being overwhelmed represented the absence of personal knowledge. The categories questioning self, seeking help, and microthinking fit under being overwhelmed. Together these categories were inverse indicators because they all decreased as knowledge acquisition progressed. The core category being confident represented the presence of personal knowledge. The categories remembering, multitasking, and speed fit under being overwhelmed. Together these categories were direct indicators because they all increased as knowledge acquisition progressed.

Three significant conclusions were drawn from the current research. These conclusions led to the conceptualization of personal knowledge from a KM perspective. The first significant conclusion was the conceptualization of a process of knowing as Integrated Complexity: From Overwhelmed to Confident (ICOC). The second significant conclusion was personal knowing as first-person epistemology is a universally lived experience that includes commitments to internal and external requirements as well as a bias toward integration. The third significant conclusion was personal knowledge can be viewed as a complex adaptive system. Manullang, Sahat Manondang. "The development of SMEs in Bukit Barisan High Land Area to create an agricultural center by using a solid cooperation between local governments, enterprises, and farmers : an application of competitive intelligence for stimulating the growth". Phd thesis, Université Paris-Est, 2008. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00468693.

Texto completo
Resumen
The research has been conducted in Bukit Barisan High Land zone consists of eight regencies located in the northern part of North Sumatra province, Indonesia. It is found that the zone is entrapped in a high poverty rate and a high unemployment level. The regions main employment sector is agriculture, where more than 50 percent of the total workforce engages in the sector. The main challenging of the regions is a very low productivity. This is due to lack of management practices and capacities in term of tools inputs, and knowledge now-how. Moreover, the lack of information and coordination between the actors of the economy i.e. farmers-local governments-enterprises-and universities in the regions has dragged away the value added products and inherited in high fluctuation of the commodities in term of prices and qualities. Accordingly a new cooperation needs to be made between all the actors of the economy in the regions. As information has a vital role in the development of the regions, this sector hence ought to be diffused in an appropriate way. This information center then called as a Competitive Intelligence (CI) Center, which is importantly formed in each region in Bukit Barisan High Land zone. The CI center will ensure the formation of the sound development programs to be applied in the regions in order to achieve a desirable growth within the regions and within the country as a whole. The program of CI center is emphasized on enhancing the potentials of each region and overcome its problems and challenging. In this thesis, Bukit Barisan High Land which consists of 8 regions is categorized as one zone regarding similarity in its topography, climate, type of soil, social condition of the society, its potentials and problems. The development of the region then suggested by the creation of the Small and Medium Enterprises close to the region to ensure the achievement of value chain between suppliers and producers in this case Farmers and enterprises. This value chain can only be achieved by a solid collaboration by all economic actors. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the most prospective commodities need to be intensified are coffee and corn. Corn is perceived as one of a prospective export regarding a continuous increase demand for the commodity globally, whereas coffee is a permanent export commodity where the decreasing supply by Vietnam has contributed to more opportunity to Indonesia. In order to provide some vision to investors, the feasibility studies of the plantation and production of two commodities will be presented at the last part of the thesis

Resumen
This study aims to explore the representation and news coverage of an Islamist political party- Islami Andolon Bangladesh (IAB) in three Bangladeshi mainstream and ‘quality’ daily newspapers- the Daily Star (DS), the Daily Janakantha (DJ) and the New Age (NA). In the context of the city corporation election- the 2023 Barishal City Corporation (BCC), the study has been conducted. It examines if the dailies either sidelined, ignored or favored this Islamist party. It observes where they pay more or less news value about IAB and its electoral campaign. Additionally, it argues that the candidate of IAB used myth through speeches to encourage voters. The myth— if you vote for hand-fan (electoral symbol of IAB), Allah and his messenger (prophet Hazrat Muhammad) will have the votes —was unchallenged and unquestioned and the advice not to use misinformation and misguide the voters found absent in the dailies. Though the IAB could not win the election, it was expected that mass media as social institutions would come forward with accurate information to inform people wisely and so that ordinary people would not be misguided. Through quantitative and qualitative content analysis, this study leads to the outcomes that these newspapers were silent to uphold the activities of IAB. The DS and DJ had a propensity to sideline and ignore the IAB and its electioneering despite receiving the second highest vote in the election. They prioritized ruling party Awami League (AL) and Jatiya Party (JaPa) while the NA prioritized IAB through providing a better representation and emphasizing on different allegations made by this party. In future, this research can be a basement or pioneer for the researchers who will intend to look into the perspective of newspapers on political parties
