Resumen
Salmonellaoutbreaks have been linked to a wide variety of foods, including recent nationwide outbreaks. Guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), also known as cuy or cobayo, has long been a popular delicacy and ceremonial food in the Andean region in South America. This case report describes three family outbreaks of nontyphoidal salmonellosis, each occurring after a meal of guinea pigs. We believe this case report is the first to describe a probable association between the consumption of guinea pig meat and human salmonellosis. Physicians should be aware of the association ofSalmonellaand the consumption of guinea pigs, given the increasing immigration of people from the Andean region of South America and the increasing travel to this region.

Resumen
Abstract Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) has become a significant clinical challenge due to rapid increase in the incidence during the past four decades in the USA and Western countries. However, the prognosis of EAC patients is still poor with 5-year overall survival rate about 20%. There is an urgent need to identify novel therapeutic targets associated with EAC biology. NEK2 is the first identified human NEK (Never in mitosis A (NIMA) related kinase) gene among the 11 serine/threonine kinases family. Aberrant NEK2 expression is reported in a variety of human cancers and plays important roles in tumorigenesis, progression, and drug-resistance. However, the expression of the NEK2 in EAC and its precancerous condition (Barrett’s esophagus, BE) has not been investigated. Using bioinformatic approaches, we first analyzed the TCGA and 9 GEO databases (a total of 10 databases in which eight contain EAC and 6 contain BE) and found that NEK2 was significantly upregulated in EAC as compared to normal esophagus in 7 of the 8 databases. Meanwhile, genomic alterations of NEK2 are only found in 1.2% of EAC. We validated the overexpression of NEK2 using qRT-PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry in EAC cell lines and in primary EAC tissues. Functionally, we demonstrated that overexpression of NEK2 in EAC cells promoted tumor cell growth. Targeting NEK2 in EAC cells significantly inhibited EAC tumor growth. Our data suggests that frequent overexpression of NEK2 plays an important role in EAC. Citation Format: Lei Chen, Heng Lu, Farah Ballout, Tianling Hu, Zheng Chen, Dunfa Peng. Objectiveto examine the perspectives of brain injury professionals concerning family members' feelings about the quality of life experienced by individuals with brain injuries. Participants: participating in the study were 28 individuals in leadership positions with the state affiliates of the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA).Methodsan electronic survey containing open-ended questions was utilized to solicit qualitative statements concerning family members' feelings about the quality of life experienced by individuals with brain injuries. A constant comparative process was employed to identify themes expressed with a degree of consensus among respondents.Resultsthe following six themes were identified: (a) variability in quality of life; (b) the role of access to and quality of services in determining quality of life; (c) factors associated with negative quality of life; (d) the importance of social relationships in moderating quality of life; (e) post-injury factors influencing quality of life; and (f) the relationship between family socioeconomic status and quality of life.Conclusionsrespondents believed that families felt quality of life was more negative than positive, but was moderated by a variety of contextual factors. These findings reinforce the significance of enhancing professional services and program funding for individuals with brain injury.

Resumen
BackgroundA positive family history (PFH) of spondyloarthritis (SpA) consists of five SpA-related entities, of which a PFH of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is most common in European patients with axSpA. Moreover, a PFH of axSpA is associated with human leucocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27) positivity in these patients. It is unknown if this holds true in patients with axSpA in other parts of the world.ObjectiveTo investigate the geographical prevalence of a PFH of SpA and its association with HLA-B27 positivity in patients with axSpA worldwide.MethodsCross-sectional analyses included patients from the ASAS peripheral involvement in Spondyloarthritis (PerSpA) study from 24 countries worldwide with an axSpA diagnosis, known HLA-B27 status and family history. Logistic regression models were built to assess the effect of HLA-B27 status on the occurrence of PFH. This was repeated for each of the five SpA entities in a PFH.ResultsAmong 2048 patients, axSpA was the most common SpA entity in a PFH in all geographical regions (Asia 28%, Europe and North America 27%, Latin America 20%, Middle East and North Africa 41%). A PFH of axSpA was associated with HLA-B27 positivity in Asia (OR 4.19), Europe and North America (OR 2.09) and Latin America (OR 3.95), but not in the Middle East and North Africa (OR 0.98), which has a lower prevalence of HLA-B27 positivity. A PFH of other SpA entities was less prevalent and not consistently associated with HLA-B27 positivity.ConclusionIn patients with axSpA worldwide, axSpA was consistently the most common SpA entity in a family history and was associated with HLA-B27 positivity in all geographical regions but one.

Resumen
Knowledge on the hydrological evolution of the Neotropical region was used along with the current distribution of the anablepid species to investigate the historical biogeography of this family. Areas of endemism were delimited by endemicity analysis resulting in seven individual areas of endemism and three consensus areas located in northwestern Argentina, southern Brazil, and northern South America. These areas were discussed in the context of anablepid species diversification, especially for the genus Anableps and the subgenera Jenynsia and Plesiojenynsia. The existence of areas of endemism for the family analyzed reveals an intimate association with historical events that occurred in the geological evolution of South America, which can be associated with the main diversification patterns and historical hypotheses in the context of Neotropical freshwater fishes biogeography.

Resumen
The current study examined the association of COVID-19 contraction worry for self and for family members with COVID-19 peritraumatic distress and loneliness in Chinese residents in North America. A sample of 943 Chinese residents (immigrants, citizens, visitors, and international students) in North America completed a cross-sectional online survey during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (between January and February 2021). Univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) models identified possible sociodemographic variables that were included in the subsequent hierarchical regression models. According to the hierarchical regression models, self-contraction worry was significantly associated with both COVID-19 peritraumatic distress (B = −4.340, p < 0.001) and loneliness (B = −0.771, p = 0.006) after controlling for related sociodemographic covariates; however, family-contraction worry was not significantly associated with the outcome variables. Additionally, poorer health status and experienced discrimination significantly predicted higher COVID-19 peritraumatic distress, whereas poorer health status and perceived discrimination significantly predicted increased loneliness. The results highlighted the detrimental impacts of self-contraction worry on peritraumatic distress and loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chinese residents in North America.

Resumen
Abstract Migration and resettlement are major life events that affect immigrants’ functioning and health status. Previous research has well-established the influence of acculturation and family cohesion on Chinese Americans’ mental health and health behavior; however, the moderation effect of family cohesion on the relationship between acculturation and self-rated health – a robust measure of an individual’s general health – has not been examined among this population. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between family cohesion, acculturation, and self-rated health among older Chinese Americans. Data came from a survey of 385 Chinese Americans aged 55 and older living in a large metropolitan area in Southwest America through face-to-face interviews. We used logistic regression to examine the association between acculturation, family cohesion, and self-reported health. In general, acculturation was significantly associated with higher odds of reporting excellent or good health after adjusting for demographic and psychosocial covariates; however, the association between acculturation and self-reported health differed by family cohesion. We found that acculturation was positively associated with self-reported health only among those with medium or high family cohesion, but not among those with low family cohesion. Findings highlighted the significance of involving family members and strengthening family support for providing acculturation services, such as language class and healthy literacy education, to older Americans. Family cohesion needs to be considered by health and mental health care providers for older Chinese Americans to further understand the resources and barriers that influence their health service use and health behaviors.

Resumen
Human reproductive success requires both producing children and making investments in the development of offspring. To a large extent these investments are made by the parents of the child, but researchers are now looking beyond the nuclear family to understand how extended kin, notably grandmothers, enhance reproductive success by making transfers to progeny of different kinds. The extent to which kin influence fertility and mortality outcomes may vary across different socio-economic and geographic contexts; as a result, an international comparative framework is used here to sharpen our understanding of the role of kin in reproduction. This chapter assesses the role of grandmothers in fertility outcomes in a comparative historical demographic study based on data from Scandinavia and North America. The individual-level data used are all longitudinal and multigenerational, allowing us to address the impact of maternal and paternal grandmothers on the fertility of their daughters and daughters-in-law. Attending to heterogeneous effects across space and time as well as within-family differences via the use of fixed effects models, we discover broader associations of the paternal grandmother with higher fertility across the four regions. We also find a general fertility advantage associated with the post-reproductive availability or recent death of the maternal grandmother in the four populations. Important variations across regions nevertheless exist in terms of the strength of the association and the importance of the grandmother’s proximity. Our interpretation is that grandmothers were generally associated with high-fertility outcomes, but that the mechanism for this association was co-determined by family configurations, resource allocation and the advent of fertility control.

Resumen
This chapter examines the establishment of formal marriage, including same-sex marriage, and the legal issues involved in maintaining that relationship. While in the past the marital relationship was wholly defined by the state, now certain aspects of the relationship can be negotiated by the parties, which may result in a more egalitarian relationship. Also, by including the marriage within the world of contract, one effect is to move the status away from its religious roots and aspects and toward its being a secular relationship. The benefit of treating marriage as a special kind of partnership contract is that it emphasizes the individual nature of the relationship and downplays its community aspects. Indeed, the modern marriage is more like an association, in some situations a business association, of two adults who have preserved their individual rights. The chapter then considers freedom to marry as a fundamental right and looks at how states have limited marriage formation throughout history.

In the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, Baptists in middle colonies like Pennsylvania competed against a staggering variety of religious denominations and sects. Essential for establishing and maintaining their denomination in this context was the founding of the Philadelphia Baptist Association in 1707, the first Baptist institutional structure in America. In addition to tracing his family lineage, this chapter explores the early influences of the Philadelphia Baptist Association on Oliver Hart, along with the Baptist rituals and doctrines he absorbed in the Pennepek Baptist Church. Hart’s exposure to Quaker and Keithian antislavery sentiments in Pennsylvania is also considered.

Abstract In her remarks before the American Medical Association on March 11, 1994, Donna Shalala, secretary of health and human services, condemned family violence and urged congressional passage of the Violence Against Women Act as a way to protect women against abuse. Budgeted at $1.8 billion over five years, the act would, among its many provisions, mandate the arrest of a suspected abuser, whether or not the victim pressed charges. “This country has to wake up to the very real consequences of this violence,” Shalala explained. “Domestic violence is terrorism-terrorism in the home-and that is what we should call it.” (The bill, part of the Omnibus Violent Crime Control and Prevention Act, was in fact passed by Congress and then signed into law by President Bill Clinton in September 1994.)

Resumen
Abstract This chapter surveys the contribution of Christianity to modern Latin American law during the past two hundred years, exploring how the region has experienced debates in its institutional development in dialogue with Christian religious ideals. In concrete terms, the chapter addresses such an influence in four specific legal fields: (1) the transition from Catholic republics to the coexistence of public ecclesiastic law with religious freedom; (2) the regulation of social life, particularly family relations and freedom of association; (3) the legal contest over economic regulation during the twentieth century; and (4) the scope and protection of human rights since the late 1940s. In contrast to mainstream social-sciences scholarship, which looks at Christianity as an obstacle to modernization in the region, the chapter shows that Christianity has contributed to a distinctive religiously oriented version of legal modernity. In this orientation, Christian ideals about justice, the commonwealth, and human dignity have influenced the social mindset and the content of constitutions, legislation, and legal scholarship. And they have done so while facing a landscape that frequently has been plagued with political violence and state failures. The chapter concludes that understanding the contribution of Christianity is essential in order to comprehend some traits of the current Latin American legal culture, even when the place of Christian ideals in the public sphere has been called into question.

Resumen
This chapter discussed the overall reduction of crime and rise of violence in schools across America to include activities from bullying to school shootings. There was a definition of school violence provided along with the most common reasons why bulling occurs. The importance of warning signs was addressed and the significance of having key individuals such as teachers, coaches, counselors, SRO's, parents and family members trained in recognizing these signs so that some type of orchestrated intervention can be applied to the situation and the children being bullied and those performing the bullying can be addressed. The fact of why many children do not report being bullied or ask for help and how it is connected to the issues of power was provided and information regarding teachers who would rather ignore bullying in their classrooms than to address it and be in a confrontational situation was examined. The four prominent theories which relate directly to learned behavior and violence, such as social learning theory, differential association, rational choice theory and Violentization were discussed due to them being the foundation for recognizing, understanding and effectively dealing with bullying and school violence for school officials, parents and SRO's.

Abstract As might be said about most areas of clinical care, professional interest in cognitive rehabilitation (CR) was motivated more by humanistic than by scientific concerns during its initial development. Increasing numbers of young people survived severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in the 1970s due to improved emergency and neurosurgical methods. Rehabilitation professionals responded by attempting to formulate procedures to assist these people in reentering the mainstream of life. These early rehabilitation efforts were strongly encouraged by family members of people with TBI and through the advocacy of the National Head Injury Association (later renamed the Brain Injury Association of America) and its affiliates.

Resumen
This chapter addresses the wholesale exportation of Hereford cattle to North and South America, Australia, and New Zealand in the 1870s as part of a concerted effort to feed Britons with “British” meat bred and raised abroad, and returned to the metropole as frozen meat. In their enthusiasm to profit from foreign demand for British stock, Hereford breeders allowed their (quasi-)colonial competitors to establish their own reservoirs of the breed’s genetic potential. After American breeders severed ties with their British counterparts over the lack of stringency in English pedigrees, these two branches of the bovine family tree developed in isolation. While English Herefords increasingly gained status as a national breed, shedding their regional association with the county of Hereford for a perceived Britishness, Herefords in America became a new, quasi-colonial “native” breed, much like New Zealand’s Corriedale breed of sheep.

Resumen
ABSTRACT Women have contributed to “paleoart” working in collaboration with scientists, using vertebrate fossils to reconstruct vanished worlds, and directly shaping the way humans imagine the distant past. “Backboned” animals of former times have been portrayed singly or in groups and were often set in landscape scenes. Women paleoartists in America and Europe began working in the nineteenth century often through family association, such as pioneers Orra White Hitchcock, Graceanna Lewis, and Mary Morland Buckland. Mainly using traditional two-dimensional styles, they portrayed ancient vertebrate fossils in graphite and ink drawings. Paleoartist Alice Bolingbroke Woodward introduced vibrant pen and watercolor reconstructions. Although female paleoartists were initially largely unrecognized, in the twentieth cen tury they gained notice by illustrating important books on prehistoric vertebrate life. Paid employment and college and university training increased by the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, with larger institutions providing stable jobs. The “Dinosaur Renaissance” of the late 1960s gave a boost to new paleo-artistry. Women paleo artists became more prominent in the later twentieth to twenty-first centuries with the development of new art techniques, computer-based art, and use of the internet. Increasingly, there is encouragement and support for women paleoartists through the Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) movement.

Resumen
In this paper the Model of Autonomous-Related Singles Counseling (MARSC) is introduced. MARSC is based on Kağıtçıbaşı's (1996) Autonomous-Related Self Model (ARSM) and on Aydın’s (2017, 2019) Singles Counseling Theory which have been developed in Turkey, a country that scores high on collectivism (Hofstede, 1980). In both models, the basic psychological needs of autonomy and relatedness are the key concepts. ARSM is a supplementary synthesis model that integrates two constructs assumed to be conflicting, and it is based on cross-cultural diversity: autonomy and relatedness. ARSM is prevalent in collectivistic cultures. Research conducted on diverse national and ethnic groups in Brazil, Estonia, Turkey, China, the Canadian Inuit, and immigrants in the United States of America and Europe, provides scientific evidence with regard to the ARSM. ARSM develops in the family model of psychological interdependence (FMPI) in collectivistic cultures. It involves a healthier combination of both autonomy and relatedness, which are essential psychological needs rather than relying on single autonomy or relatedness. Autonomy infers agency (social and cognitive) and volition, while relatedness infers emotional relations and support. Intervention is needed for ARSM to develop in a collectivistic culture. A single individual at MARSC is defined as someone who never married, got divorced, lives separately, or is widowed. MARSC has been developed to inspire prevention and intervention programs to develop the ARSM and related structures and functions (such as FMPI and autonomous-related single lifestyle). However, some environmental problems have become widespread and important in Turkey, therefore, the effectiveness of these psychological counseling programs also requires these problems to be resolved. Within the scope of Turkey-MARSC, these programs should be prepared to enhance efforts on developing autonomy in single individuals.

Resumen
The effects of market and policy reforms on poverty and inequality in Latin America have been of considerable concern. The region continues to have relatively great income inequalities. Two different societies with the same income distribution may have different levels of social welfare because they have different degrees of social mobility. To date little attention has been paid to measuring social mobility in the region. Schooling is thought to be a major mechanism through which intergenerational social mobility is affected. This paper explores the strength of the association of family background with child schooling and whether the strength of this association is related to some major macro and aggregate school policy variables.
