The development of the MCA (Multimodal Corpus Authoring System, Baldry 2005, Baldry/Beltrami 2005) online corpus construction and concordancing system, capable of investigating a variety of multimodal texts without denuding them of their distinguishing features, has led to extensive research on the integration of multimodal corpora, and multimodal concordancing in particular, into university syllabuses in the past few years (Baldry et al. 2005, Grunther 2005, Ackerley/Coccetta 2007b, Baldry 2007, in press, Grunther 2007, Coccetta in press, Dalziel/Metelli in press). This article describes a pilot project set up at the University of Padua (Coccetta 2004) which through the use of the MCA system made a small corpus of ﬁlm texts, the English Language Learning Oriented (ELLO) ﬁlm corpus, more easily accessible to language learners and allowed them to investigate: a) how a speciﬁc language function (van Ek/Trim 1998a, 1998b, 2001) is enacted by a set of different language forms and b) the ways in which the various manifestations of this function perform in relation to the multimodal co-text in which they are produced. In so doing, it illustrates some of the beneﬁts this approach brings to language learning and gives examples of teaching materials based on the ELLO ﬁlm corpus which are designed to promote language learners’ communicative competence.

Resumen

Through first-hand experiences undertaken with students using the OpenMWS platform (Taibi 2020), the paper reports on the progress made by second-year language degree students in English linguistics at the University of Messina as regards their use of online corpus construction, annotation and search tools when exploring video genres. The paper describes the ways in which participation in the Messina OVP (Online Video Project) on schools in the British Isles during and after the Covid crisis has proved beneficial for the students in question, both in terms of acquiring textual competences and as regards creating new interactive communities (Vasta and Baldry 2020; Baldry et al 2022).

RESUMO Neste artigo visamos a apresentar, primeiramente, a compatibilidade entre as análises de textos no quadro do Interacionismo Sociodiscursivo (ISD) de Bronckart (1999, 2006, 2008) e as dos textos multimodais de Baldry e Thibault (2010), visto que ambas compartilham semelhanças, no que se refere a uma visão social de linguagem, conceito de gênero e aos níveis da análise. Em segundo lugar, pretendemos mostrar que as diferenças no instrumental analítico não impedem a apropriação de elementos de análise dos textos multimodais da web ao plano analítico do ISD. Concomitantemente, exemplificamos a proposta por meio de análise de um texto em web.

Resumen

Neste artigo, fazemos uma revisão da literatura (Iedema, 2001; O’Halloran, 2004; Baldry e Thibault, 2007) em Análise do Discurso Multimodal em busca de categorias para segmentação e análise de imagens em movimento em gêneros diversos. O objetivo é estabelecer uma análise comparativa entre as propostas e subsidiar tanto a pesquisa quanto o ensino dos multiletramentos por meio de textos em vídeo. A partir da análise, ficou evidente que há um avanço significativo na área, pois os autores investigados apresentam uma sintonia conceitual na proposta de quatro unidades – Quadro, Tomada, Cena e Sequência. Identificamos, entretanto, alguns desafios para futuras pesquisas.

Transformable Furniture Master’s Degree Work The theme of the Master’s degree work - “Transformable Furniture” – is a topical issue these days, because the problem of irrational and tasteless furniture as well as interiors still exists. After analysing theories of the development of contemporary material environment as well as philosophical and artistic theories and attitude through the prism of the art and science proportion, the conception of the art playfulness, tendencies of the development of furniture and interior installations, assortment and principles of the creation and art conception as well as ergonomic laws, declared by the Functionality, the Constructivism, the concept of the Master’s degree work was formed, theoretical description was prepared and the universal, transformable furniture of 98 sq. m., designed for the interior was created; it enables to plan the dwelling space rationally and creatively. The project is composed from eleven main objects with continuous transformable modifications of the furniture for individual space. The project is presented on fourteen plane-tables with detailed schemes of each object, visualisations of their position in the interior. Three-dimensional models of each object are presented following a chosen scale of M 1 : 10. Resumen

Klubinių baldų projektą sudaro fotelis, stalas ir pufas. Pasirinkta ši tema dėl tokių priežasčių: tokio tipo baldų pasirinkimas gan nedidelis, tokio tipo baldai salyginai brangūs ir ši tema man yra artima. Baldų formos ir spalvos įkvėptos gamtos – idėja kilo iš kokoso riešuto. Pagrindiniai kriterijai kuriais vadovautasi: funckionalumas, estetinė išvaizda, aukšta kokybė ir žema kaina. Sukurti baldai yra praktiški dėl keičiamų dažniausiai dėvimų dalių. Ištepus šias dalis ar mechaniškai pažeidus jas galima lengvai pakeisti, tai yra itin aktualu, nes nereikialauja papildomų išlaidų (transportavimas, baldo pervilkimas, darbo kaina). Dėl šios baldo savybės jį lengva pritaikyti prie interjero, gali būti keičiamos spalvos bei medžiagos (oda, audinys ir kt.). Fotelio galinėje dalyje pritvirtinta detalė yra tik mano pasiūlytas sprendinys, dėl baldo unikalios konstrukcijos, gali būti gaminami įvairūs kevalai, kitos formos detalės. Vietoje užrašo „COCONUT“ gali būti naudojami kiti užrašai, kuriuos siekiama populiarinti. Baigiamąjį darbą sudaro penki planšetai, aiškinamasis raštas, brėžinių aplankas, bukletas ir gaminys – fotelis.
Club furniture design project consists of a chair, a table and a pouffe. This theme was chosen for the following reasons: the choise of this type of furniture is relatively small, such furniture is expensive and the topic is close to me. The shape and the colour are inspired by nature – the coconut. The main criteria I followed in my diploma work were: functionality, aesthetic appearance, high quality and low price. The created furniture is practical because of the parts that can be replaced. These parts can be easily replaced when smeard or mechanically broken and that is really important because it does not require additional expenses (transportation, furniture reclothing, labour price). Due to these removable parts, the designed furniture can be easily adapted to any interior – the colour and the material of the parts can be changed (leather, cloth, ect.). The attached part in the back of the armchair is my solution, variuos parts of other form can be made and attached. Other notes that are wanted to be populatized can be used instead of „COCONUT“. The Bachelor work consists of five flatbeds, the note folder, the folder of drawings, brochure and the product – an armchair.

Didėjantis mūsų gyvenimo tempas, dažniausiai nepalieka laiko poilsiui, bendravimui su artimaisiais, laikas tampa deficitu. Visi priversti skubėti, todėl vis labiau populiaresni tampa dizaino sprendimai, padedantys taupyti brangų laiką, sudarantys galimybę produkto vartotojui pačiam tapti kūrėju formuojant aplinką. Tai paskatino sukurti universalų baldą, lengvai transformuojamą. Šis kūrinys tarnaus ne tik kaip baldas poilsiui, atsipalaidavimui, bet atliks ir žaidybiškumo funkciją, lavins loginį mastymą ir vaizduotę. Bakalauro darbo pavadinimas „ DOMINO“. Tai modulinis transformuojamas baldas, kuris susideda iš 17 dalių. Pagrindas – lagamino formos dėžė, kuri gali transformuotis į minkštasuolį, staliuką su 16 minkštų odinių pagalvėlių, tinkantį laisvalaikio praleidimui, poilsiui, arba tarnauti kaip žaidybinė priemonė. Šį modulinį baldą lengvai galima transformuoti į lagaminą, tai sudarys galimybę jį patogiai transportuoti, panaudoti išvykose, ar poilsiaujant. Šis baldas puikiai tiks tiek mažose tiek didesnėse erdvėse, ar gamtoje. Spalvins komplekto sprendimas juodojo šokolado ir dramblio kaulo spalvos oda, tokį sprendimą lėmė tai, kad šios spalvos tradiciškai naudojamos šiame žaidime, tarpusavyje dera, nėra reiklios, todėl lengvai įsikomponuoja į aplinką, yra raminančios. Šis baldas puikiai tiks ir paaugliams ir suaugusiems.
The increasing pace of our lives often leaves no time to relax and communicate with our family and friends and time becomes a deficit. Therefore we can see increasing popularity of design solutions that help to save valuable time, allowing the user to become himself a product designer in shaping his own environment. This led to the creation of universal furniture which is easily transformed. This creation will serve not only as a piece of furniture for relaxation but will have fuctions of entertaintment and will develop his owner's logical thinking and imagination. The title of this Bachelor's work is "Domino". The object of this work is a transformed modular furniture, which consists of 17 parts. The base of this furniture is suitcase which could be transformed into an armchair and a table with 16 upholstered leather pads, suitable for leisure, relaxation, or serve as a playful tool. This modular furniture could be easily transformed back to the suitcase, this fuction will be convenient to transport it and use during travels. This piece of furniture will suit both for small and large spaces as well as outdoors. Decision for the colour of the furniture was taken in regard of colours traditionally used in the game. Furthermore colours match each other and has calming features, also such combination of the colours is not demanding, so it could be easily integrated to environment. This furniture will be good for both adults and juveniles.

Bakalauro darbo tikslas sukurti dekoratyvų daugiafunkcinį baldą „KUBAS“. Kūrybiniame procese naudojamos informacijos šaltinių studijos. Nagrinėjama istorinė baldų raida, baldų rūšys, medžiagos naudojamos baldų gamyboje. Kūrybinio darbo idėjos paieškoje naudojant informacijos šaltiniuose pateiktą medžiagą nagrinėjama konceptualių, ekologiškų ir daugiafunkcinių baldų gamyba ir pritaikymas interjere. Išnagrinėjus šią medžiagą pristatoma galutinė gaminio idėja – dekoratyvus daugiafunkcinis baldas „KUBAS“. Įgyvendinant idėją kuriami eskizai, braižomi brėžiniai, gaminamas maketas. Praėjus šiuos kūrybinio darbo etapus, pasirinkus medžiagas ir suplanavus darbo eigą pagaminamas „KUBAS“. Dekoratyvaus daugiafunkcinio baldo kūrybinio darbo proceso patirtis bus pritaikoma technologinio ugdymo procese.

Pateikiami trys modulinių laukiamojo baldų variantai. Pagrindinė medžiaga, iš kurios padaryti baldai, yra plastikas. Plastikiniai baldai patogūs, juos paprasta prižiūrėti, lengva pernešti iš vienos vietos į kitą, ir jie yra pigesni. Norint pakeisti baldų išdėstymą nekils problemų. Šiame projekte nėra prisirišama prie plano, moduliniai baldai projektuoti oro uosto laukiamojo salei. Tačiau juos galima pritaikyti ir kitose viešose erdvėse kaip traukinių, autobusų stotis ir t.t. Atrinktos penkios idėjos, iš kurių trys galutinai išplėtotos. Visuose trijuose variantuose suprojektuotas šviečiantis modulis, centrinis akcentas su vandeniu, ir galimybe atsisėsti. Pirmajį variantą sudaro šviečiantis elementas bukam kampui, metalinis elementas stačiam kampui, plastikinis elementas smailiam kampui, plastikinė kilpa, šiukšliadėžė, centrinis akcentas. Centrinis akcentas jungia grindis ir lubas, jame įrengtas LED apšvietimas, tekančio vandens atkarpa. Antrajį variantą sudaro koriuko formos elementai – elementas atsisėsti be atlošo, šviečiantis elementas atsisėsti su atlošu, elementas su jame pasėta žole, šiukšliadėžė, centrinis akcentas. Centrinis akcentas suprojektuotas iš skirtingų dydžių korio formos marmuro plokštumų, jame įrengtas apšvietimas ir vandens telkinys. Trečiajį variantą sudaro sėdimoji dalis, šviečiantis elementas, šiukšliadėžė, centrinis akcentas. Centriniame akcente įrengtas fontanas, padaryti platesni fontano kraštai, kad būtų galima prisėsti. Three variations of the modular lounge furniture are presented. The main material used to make furniture is plastic. Plastic furniture is comfortable and cheaper. It is easy to handle and move from one place to another. Therefore the change of furniture arrangement does not cause any problems. This project does not accurately follow the plan; modular furniture was designed for the airport departue lounge, but it can be adjusted to use in other public space, such as ralway or bus station, etc. Five ideas were chosen and three of them were developed till the end. All three variations include a luminous module as a central part with water and sitting possibility designed. The first variation consists of luminous element for a blunt corner, metal element for a sharp corner, plastic element for an acute corner, plastic loop, litterbin and a central part. Central part ties in a floor with a ceiling, it includes LED ilumination and running water segment installed. The second variation consists of the comb form elements – sitting element without a backrest, luminous sitting element with a backrest, element with a grass inside it, litterbin and a central part. Central part is designed using different sizes of the comb form marble flats with illumination and water body installed. The third variation consists of the sitting part, luminous element, litterbin and central part. Central part includes a fountain with wide edges to sit on. Illumination is installed under the sitting part.

Resumen

In the southern Appalachians, unforested openings known as balds persist on or near mountain peaks. These high elevation openings support a variety of unusual biota and are considered globally rare as a result of their biodiversity. Balds have historically been subject to both natural and human disturbances. Such historical and more recent disturbances have had a profound impact on vegetation dynamics in these systems. With the use of dendrochronology and GIS, this research project was aimed at 1) reconstructing the temporal and spatial patterns of tree encroachment into Craggy Gardens, a grass/heath bald, and determining the causal factors, and 2) investigating tree-growth responses of Quercus rubra L. to climatic factors at Craggy Gardens and Big Bald, North Carolina (high elevation forest-grass ecotones). Results indicate that historical grazing and land management have been responsible for vegetation changes at Craggy Gardens, in particular the advancement of Quercus rubra L. into the grass bald. Dendrochronological analyses showed that incremental growth of Quercus rubra L. growing in and adjacent to the balds was controlled by spring temperatures and drought conditions over most of the past century, until around 1970, when tree began responding primarily to growing year summer temperatures over the last four decades. This study concluded that land-uses overprinted on climatic conditions have governed local-scale vegetation structure over the past 150 years and without continuing management, trees may continue to advance into Craggy Gardens. Changing human disturbances along with observed climate changes in recent decades provides will most assuredly set the stage for future vegetation changes in southern Appalachians balds.

Resumen

Understanding the interplay between surficial and tectonic processes in the development of Utah's Wasatch Range is vital to evaluating geologic hazards along the Wasatch Front. Baldy is a large (6.125 km3) block of limestone and sandstone structurally overlying shale on the western flank of Mount Timpanogos. It has been mapped as a downdropped normal fault block of Permian units, but no other trace of such a fault exists along the range. The Baldy block structurally overlies the weak Manning Canyon shale, which has produced a regional geomorphology replete with faceted spurs, landslide scarps and deposits. Structural, bio- and litho-stratigrahic mapping of the block reveals breccia deposits, bed rotation and stratigraphic and structural relations to Mount Timpanogos consistent with a landslide interpretation. Structural reconstructions of the block and calculations of stream downcutting rates help constrain the timing and sequence of events of the block's emplacement. These results attest to the importance of surficial processes in the development of large-scale geologic structures, and demonstrate the ongoing danger of mass wasting to the communities of the Wasatch Front.

Resumen

The design of rigid submarine pipelines has been the object of extensive research work over the last few years, where the most relevant issues include upheaval and lateral buckling problems. Both of these problems systematically associate temperature and pressure loads, where the treatment of the first is obvious, while the latter have always been a matter of discussion. In 1974 Palmer and Baldry [1] presented a theoretical-experimental contribution, in which they have set a pattern that has been followed ever since. Another similar and well known paper was published by Sparks in 1983 [7], who only present a physical interpretation of this same theory. Most of the present day industry codes define an effective axial force, according to which, fixed end pipelines will be under compression due to internal pressure. The starting point of the discussion presented in [1] was that internal pressure produces a lateral force, which is numerically equal to the pressure times internal cross-sectional area times the pipeline curvature: q=p.Ai.d2y/dx2(1) This equation is demonstrated further ahead in this paper. Palmer and Baldry then based their arguments on the traditional equation of the pinned column buckling problem, studied by Euler [2]: EId4y/dx4+Pd2y/dx2=0(2) for which the well known solution is: P=π2EI/L2(3) and on the associated problem studied by Timoshenko [3], which adds a distributed lateral load q to the same problem: EId4y/dx4+Pd2y/dx2=q(4) Replacing q with the lateral pressure given above, they were able to have their own problem fall back onto the Euler solution: EId4y/dx4+Pd2y/dx2=p.Ai.d2y/dx2P-pAi=π2EI/L2(5) After correcting for the Poisson effect they were able to determine the new critical axial force caused by the pressure. Unfortunately, however, the arguments set forth in [1] have been misunderstood. The fact that both axial force and lateral force multiply curvature does not make them forces of the same nature. Being able to add them has solved a mathematical equation, but still hasn’t converted the lateral force to axial. The authors wish to prove that [1] presents no more than a tool, which can be used in the analysis of global buckling problems of pipelines subject to both temperature and pressure. It will be shown, however, that this pressure will not produce an axial force, as now-a-days prescribed conservatively in many pipeline codes, which is even used for stress checking.

Resumen

Between 1986 and 2002, there were 43 fatalities in the United States to operators of recycling industry balers. Of these fatalities, 29 involved horizontal balers that were baling paper and cardboard (Taylor, 2002). Balers often become jammed while the baling process is occurring, and the only way to remove the jam is manually. This requires an employee to place a limb of their body into the jamming area and remove the material that is causing the jam. While lockout and tagout procedures reduce the risk of hazardous energy being released, they can still be easily bypassed, ignored, or forgotten. Recent efforts to reduce machine-related injury and death involve the development of a control system for these machines that automatically detects hazardous operating conditions and responds accordingly. The system is being developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This system, JamAlert, automatically terminates the power to the machine when a jam is detected. JamAlert detects a jam by observing both the strain that is experienced by the shear bar of the baler and the hydraulic pressure at which the ram is operating. The strain that is experienced by the baler shear bar when a jam is initiated was calculated in this study through laboratory testing and finite element modeling. Design recommendations are presented on how best to tune the JamAlert’s operating program to most effectively control the jam-clearing hazard.

Resumen

Forage harvest belongs to the principal works in contemporary agriculture. Increasingly popular technology is the making round bales. The basic advantage of round balers is application versatility. Harvest method is useful for making hay, straw and haylage, Quality of the bale is dependent on the level of work equipment and operator. This paper is focused on comparing the round baler with variable bale chamber. Round baler Vicon RV 1601 OC14 was compared with round baller Welger RP 435 Master. Both models were equipped with variable chamber. The variable chamber was formed by the endless belts. The evaluation was conducted from quality of work perspective and efficiency. The most important quality parameter was the density of bales. Quality parameters of bales were determined by measuring and weighing. Straw bales and haylage bales were used for studies. Qualitative indicators were converted into dry matter content. Microwave drying according to Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences was used to determine the dry matter. Baler Welger reached better qualitative parameters of work. It was also demonstrated by statistical evaluation using Tukey test. It has clearly demonstrated that round baller Welger achieves significantly greater pressing than round baller Vicon. Greater difference was measured at baling straw. Difference was below the threshold of statistical significance during haylage baling. This difference shows favour of the round baller Welger. On the other hand baler Vicon requires lower input power.

Toks darbo pobūdis leidžia lengvai grįžti ir pakoreguoti seną projektą, taip pat pasimokyti iš klaidų. Inžinieriai, dizaineriai kuria didelės vertės detalių 3D modelius, brėžinius. Pradėdami naują projektą jie gali pasinaudoti sukaupta patirtimi ir inžinieriniais sprendimais, kurie buvo taikomi kuriant ankstesnius modelius. Dažnai naudojamos detalės galiausiai tampa standartinėmis įmonės viduje. Pavyzdžiui, baldus gaminanti įmonė gali turėti ištobulintą tvirtinimo elemento šabloną, kurį šiek tiek pakoreguotą naudoja gamindama visą savo produkciją. Tokį efektyvumą įmonė gali pasiekti turėdama griežtai suorganizuotą dokumentaciją. Priešingu atveju inžinierius, kaskart dirbdamas su nauju projektu, pats to nežinodamas, vis iš naujo atranda jau duomenų bazėje esantį detalės dizainą. Todėl inžinieriai vis daugiau laiko skiria esamų detalių paieškai. Remiantis tyrimais, daugiau nei pusė darbo laiko yra skiriama reikiamos informacijos paieškai. Toks darbas nėra efektyvus, todėl yra didelis poreikis dizaino paieškos sistemoms.

Resumen

A new device for storing hydraulic hoses and electrical cables on round hay balers and other agricultural equipment has been designed and validated through computer modeling and prototype testing. The apparatus is a moveable steel arm assembly supported by an over center gas spring – linkage system that allows the device to toggle between an operational and storage (or transport) position. A face-grid feature allows the hoses a free range of motion, and insures that hoses remain organized. A full-scale prototype was constructed in order to confirm concept functionality, and determine key dimensions. Extensive calculations, computer modeling, and finite element analysis were utilized to optimize all components of the final design, and insure that the final manufacturing cost metric of $30 per unit would be met. Following these calculations, a second-generation prototype was constructed and field-tested with end users to ensure that the device met all performance requirements, while still maintaining ease of use. This device provides round baler users a trouble free hose storage and organization system that is convenient, efficient, easily manufactured and will improve equipment lifespan by promoting correct hose storage and cleanliness.

Resumen

The article shows the role of digital machine technologies used in feed production. The analysis of intelligent solutions used in the designs of modern balers from the world's leading manufacturers of agricultural machinery is carried out. It is noted that electronic systems not only perform information functions during the operation of forage harvesters, but also provide control over the operation of both individual assemblies and systems of balers, and the entire machine-tractor unit. Digital technologies make it possible to optimize the operation of the forage harvester, improve the quality of harvested forage, reduce environmental risks, improve the working conditions of machine operators, as well as increase the attractiveness and prestige of agricultural professions, and attract promising young personnel to agricultural production.

Resumen

Understanding the challenges of achieving environmental sustainability goals given future demand for food, fiber and fuel requires economic frameworks that incorporate spatially explicit information on land use and land cover (LULC). The GTAP LULC Data Base and its variants have been extensively used in a wide variety of applications aimed at examining the land-environment-energy nexus (Golub et al., 2012; Hertel et al., 2010; Johnson et al., 2019; Liu et al., 2014; Peña-Lévano et al., 2019; Stevenson et al., 2013; Taheripour et al., 2010; Taheripour & Tyner, 2012). The first release of the GTAP LULC Data Base combines geospatial data on land use and land cover into GTAP 6 Data Base – benchmarked to year 2001 (GTAP LULC v6). The methodology for creating and using this database is well documented (Lee et al., 2009; C. Monfreda et al., 2009; Sohngen et al., 2008). Succeeding updates of the GTAP LULC Data Base (namely v7 and v8 for 2004 and v8 for 2004, 2007) relied on readily available but aggregated GTAP LULC v6, albeit using national-level data from FAOSTAT (2020) (Avetisyan et al., 2010; Baldos & Hertel, 2012). Starting with GTAP 9, LULC was created directly from the latest, high-resolution (i.e. 5-minute) spatial land cover and land use maps in combination with national-level statistics (Baldos, 2017). This memorandum documents the development of the GTAP LULC version10A which is based on the GTAP v10A Data Base for years 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2014 (Aguiar et al., 2019). This update heavily relies on the methodology for creating GTAP LULC v9 which downscales national-level land cover and crop production statistics from FAOSTAT (2020) using publicly available spatial data (see Appendix I).
