The thesis main topic is the determination of the vertical component of the atmospheric muon flux as a function of the sea depth at the ANTARES site. ANTARES is a Cherenkov neutrino telescope placed at 2500m depth in the Mediterranean Sea at 40 km from the southern cost of France. In order to retrieve back the physical flux from the experimental data a deconvolution algorithm has been perform which takes into consideration the trigger inefficiensies and the reconstruction errors on the zenith angle. The obtained results are in good agreement with other ANTARES indipendent analysis.

The atmospheric muon charge ratio, defined as the number of positive over negative charged muons, is an interesting quantity for the study of high energy hadronic interactions in atmosphere and the nature of the primary cosmic rays. The measurement of the charge ratio in the TeV muon energy range allows to study the hadronic interactions in kinematic regions not yet explored at accelerators. The OPERA experiment is a hybrid electronic detector/emulsion apparatus, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, at an average depth of 3800 meters water equivalent (m.w.e.). OPERA is the first large magnetized detector that can measure the muon charge ratio at the LNGS depth, with a wide acceptance for cosmic ray muons coming from above. In this thesis, the muon charge ratio is measured using the spectrometers of the OPERA detector in the highest energy region. The charge ratio was computed separately for single and for multiple muon events, in order to select different primary cosmic ray samples in energy and composition. The measurement as a function of the surface muon energy is used to infer parameters characterizing the particle production in atmosphere, that will be used to constrain Monte Carlo predictions. La collaboration KM3NeT construit actuellement deux télescopes Cherenkov à neutrinos au fond de la mer Méditerranée, ORCA (Oscillation Research with Cosmics in the Abyss) pour mesurer les oscillations des neutrinos atmosphériques et ARCA (Astroparticle Research with Cosmics in the Abyss) pour détecter les neutrinos provenant de sources astrophysiques.Dans ce manuscrit, après avoir passé en revue l'état des mesures d'oscillation des neutrinos et des recherches de neutrinos stériles légers dans le premier chapitre, les détecteurs KM3NeT sont présentés dans le deuxième chapitre.Dans le chapitre 3, une méthode d'étalonnage basée sur la qualité des traces de muons atmosphériques reconstruites est utilisée pour valider les procédures d'étalonnage de la position et de l'orientation des détecteurs KM3NeT, et une nouvelle méthode également basée sur les muons est développée pour effectuer l'étalonnage en temps d'une manière beaucoup moins gourmande en ressources CPU que la méthode précédente. Ensuite, dans le chapitre 4, les muons atmosphériques sont étudiés plus en détail pour sélectionner ceux qui s'arrêtent dans le volume instrumenté de KM3NeT/ORCA. Nous montrons qu'avec une configuration très partielle (5%) du détecteur ORCA, plus de 8000 muons d'arrêt peuvent être sélectionnés par jour avec une pureté de plus de 95% et un excellent accord entre données et simulations.Enfin, le chapitre 5 décrit la première analyse d'oscillation réalisée avec les données ORCA pour rechercher un neutrino stérile léger. Aucun signal positif n'est trouvé à un niveau de confiance de 90%, et des limites compétitives sont posées sur l'amplitude du mélange des neutrinos muoniques et tauiques avec un état stérile<br>The KM3NeT collaboration is currently building two Cherenkov neutrino telescopes at the bottom of the Mediterranean sea, ORCA (Oscillation Research with Cosmics in the Abyss) to measure atmospheric neutrino oscillations and ARCA (Astroparticle Research with Cosmics in the Abyss) to detect neutrinos from astrophysical sources. In this manuscript, after reviewing the status of neutrino oscillation measurements and light sterile neutrino searches in the first chapter, the KM3NeT detectors are presented in the second chapter.In chapter 3, a calibration method based on the quality of the reconstructed atmospheric muon tracks is used to cross-validate the position and orientation calibration procedures of KM3NeT detectors, and a new muon-based method is developed to perform the time calibration in a much less CPU intensive way than the previous method. Then, in chapter 4, atmospheric muons are further studied to select those stopping within the instrumented volume of KM3NeT/ORCA. We show that with a very partial configuration (5%) of the ORCA detector, more than 8000 stopping muons can be selected per day with a purity of more than 95% and an excellent agreement between data and simulations.Finally, chapter 5 describes the first oscillation analysis performed with ORCA data to search for a light sterile neutrino. No positive signal is found at a 90% confidence level, and competitive limits are put on the magnitude of the mixing of muon and tau neutrinos with a sterile state

This thesis presents a combined measurement of the energy spectra of atmospheric electron and muon neutrinos in the energy range between around 100 GeV and 50 TeV with the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The analysis uses 3012 days of detector livetime in the period from 2007 to 2017, and selects 1016 neutrino interacting in (or close to) the instrumented volume of the detector, yielding shower-like events and starting track events. The contamination by atmospheric muons is suppressed at the level of a few per mill by different steps in the selection analysis, including a Boosted Decision Tree classifier. The distribution of reconstructed events is unfolded in terms of electron and muon neutrino fluxes and the derived energy spectra are compared with previous measurements.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic kilometre scale detector for high-energy neutrinos above hundreds of GeV produced in Earth’s atmosphere as well as outside our solar system whenever particles are accelerated to ultra-relativistic energies. The prompt atmospheric contribution is a result of the creation of heavy mesons with charm components in the atmosphere. Past studies from IceCube using a maximum likelihood estimation over the whole neutrino energy spectrum always reported a best-fit zero prompt contribution so far [1–5], contrary to theory [6, 7]. In this analysis we tried to measure this prompt atmospheric flux in muon neutrino event data from different IceCube releases. In contrast to past studies we performed a binned least-squares fit of the conventional atmospheric flux from data at low energies and subtracted this fit and an astrophysical flux reported by IceCube to measure a prompt contribution. Due to a lack of statistics and accessible information from data releases, our results are also compatible with a zero prompt contribution.

Deutsche Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich einerseits mit der Suche nach atmosphärischen Myonneutrinos und andererseits mit der Suche nach extraterrestrischen Neutrinopunktquellen in dem Datensatz, welcher im Jahre 1997 durch den AMANDA-Detektor aufgenommenen wurde. In dieser Arbeit wird zunächst die kosmische Strahlung eingeführt. Die Suche nach den Quellen dieser Strahlung wurde bisher insbesondere mit Hilfe der geladenen kosmischen Strahlung selber, sowie mit Hilfe von Cherenkovteleskopen für Gammastrahlen durchgeführt. Die mit diesen Techniken gewonnenen Erkenntnisse lassen bisher jedoch noch keine eindeutigen Schlüsse über die Quellen der geladenen kosmischen Strahlung zu. Dies motiviert den Versuch, mit Hilfe der Neutrinoastronomie ein neues Fenster zu den Quellen zu eröffnen. Es gibt theoretische Modelle für verschiedene potentielle Neutrinoquellen. Szenarien, in denen massive Teilchen zerfallen und die Zerfallsprodukte ihre kinetische Energie aus der freigewordenen Ruhemasse gewinnen, spielen in dieser Arbeit eine untergeordnete Rolle. Ausführlicher dargestellt werden die konventionellen Modelle, in denen geladene Teilchen mit Hilfe der sogenannten Fermibeschleunigung in astrophysikalischen Schockwellen und/oder Magnetfeldern beschleunigt werden. Hochenergetische Neutrinos entstehen nur bei Quellen, welche Hadronen beschleunigen. Insbesondere die Klasse der aktiven galaktischen Kerne (AGNs) sind hierbei interessant. Die vor einigen Jahren entwickelten vereinheitlichten AGN-Schemata sind ein wichtiger Schritt auf dem Weg, diese Objekte zu verstehen. Andere potentielle Quellen sind Supernovae und ihre überreste, Mikroquasare, sowie die Quellen hochintensiver Gammastrahlenausbrüche (GRBs). Hoch spekulativ sind Quellen, welche im elektromagnetischen Spektrum unsichtbar sind, oder auch bisher vollkommen unerwartete Quellen. Unabhängig von der genauen Natur möglicher Neutrinoquellen müssen für die Beschreibung der von ihnen ausgesendeten Neutrinoflüsse Oszillationseffekte zwischen den verschiedenen Neutrinofamilien berücksichtigt werden. Der Nachweis der hochenergetischen Neutrinos soll mit dem AMANDA-Detektor oder ähnlichen Teleskopen erfolgen. Das derzeitige AMANDA-Teleskop AMANDA-II wurde in den Jahren 1995 bis 2000 aufgebaut. Es basiert auf dem Nachweis von neutrinoinduzierten Myonen mit Hilfe des Cherenkoveffektes. Das Cherenkovlicht wird hierbei von, in einem Gitter angeordneten, großen Sekundärelektronenvervielfachern registriert. Die gewonnene Zeitinformation erlaubt eine Richtungsrekonstruktion. Das Charakteristikum für ein Neutrinoereignis ist ein aufwärts laufendes Myon, da das Neutrino das einzige bekannte Teilchen ist, welches die Erde durchqueren und ein aufwärts laufendes Myon erzeugen kann. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht Daten, die mit Hilfe des AMANDA-B10-Detektors im Jahre 1997 genommen wurden. Die Daten bestehen aus etwa $10^9$ atmosphärischen Myon- und etwa 5000 atmosphärischen Neutrinoereignissen. Um die experimentell gewonnenen Daten analysieren zu können, wird der Vergleich zu simulierten Daten benötigt. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden Flüsse atmosphärischer Myonen mit den Programmen basiev und Corsika, Flüsse neutrinoinduzierter Myonen mit nusim und nu2mu generiert. Während eine hohe Zahl von neutrinoinduzierten Myonen simuliert werden konnte, blieb die Zahl der simulierten atmosphärischen Myonen weit hinter der Zahl der experimentell gemessenen zurück. Die Propagation der simulierten Myonen sowie die Detektorsimulation erfolgte mit den Programmen mudedx bzw. amasim. Die Zeit-, Orts- und Amplitudeninformationen der gemessenen -- wie auch der simulierten -- Daten wurden anschließend kalibriert. Das erste Ziel der Analyse war die Extrahierung eines Satzes atmosphärischer Neutrinos und ein Verständnis der absoluten Sensitivität des Detektors. Die hierfür notwendige Prozessierung der Daten erfolgte in mehreren Schritten. Dabei wechselten sich immer exaktere (aber auch immer langsamere) Richtungsrekonstruktionen mit immer strengeren Qualitäts- und Winkelschnitten zur Datenreduktion ab. Die Rekonstruktionen bestanden sowohl aus schnellen analytischen Richtungsapproximationen, wie auch aus solchen, die auf langsamen Minimierung von Likelihoodfunktionen basierten. Die Schnitte wurden auf topologische Grössen, wie auch auf Parameter, welche aus der Rekonstruktion gewonnen wurden, angewandt. Die Schnitte waren notwendig, um Neutrinoereignisse aus dem weit zahlreicheren Untergrund atmosphärischer Myonenereignisse herauszufiltern. Es wurden zwei stark reduzierte Datensätze ("BG-10" mit 223 Ereignissen und "BG-100" mit 369 Ereignissen) aus den gemessenen Daten extrahiert. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass hiervon ca. 15 bzw. 100 Ereignisse durch atmosphärische Myonen bedingt waren. Die Ergebnisse stimmen sehr gut mit der Erwartung für atmosphärische Neutrinos überein, wobei die Erwartung eine Unsicherheit von bis zu 63% aufweist. Mit dem BG-10 Datensatz war somit das erste Ziel der Analyse erfüllt. Der BG-100 Datensatz sollte dem zweiten Ziel dieser Arbeit dienen: der Suche nach extraterrestrischen Neutrinoquellen. Für dieses zweite Ziel musste zunächst mit der effektiven Fläche} ein Maß für die Sensitivität des Detektors bezüglich extraterrestrischer Neutrinos eingeführt werden. Anschließend wurde die Güte der Richtungsrekonstruktion bestimmt. Hiermit konnte die optimale Grösse der zu benutzenden Suchfenster festgelegt werden. Für diese Suchfenster wurde dann die Effizienz der Rekonstruktion bestimmt. Die Effizienz ist ein Maß für den Anteil der Neutrinoereignisse, für den die Rekonstruktion korrekt bestimmt, aus welchem Suchfenster sie stammen. Nach diesen vorbereitenden Untersuchungen konnte die Quellsuche beginnen. Für diese Suche waren nun sowohl atmosphärische Myonereignisse, als auch Ereignisse, die durch atmosphärische Neutrinos hervorgerufen wurden, Untergrund. Für die Suche wurden drei verschiedene Strategien angewendet. Zunächst wurde ein Netz aus 374 aneinander angrenzenden Suchfenstern konstruiert. Basierend auf der erwarteten Anzahl von Untergrundereignissen für jedes Suchfenster wurden Wahrscheinlichkeiten berechnet, dass die Ereignisse ausschließlich Untergrundereignisse sind. Durch die große Zahl an Suchfenstern gab es einige Fenster, bei denen diese Wahrscheinlichkeit recht gering war. Insgesamt jedoch gab es keinen signifikanten Hinweis darauf, dass die Messung nicht auschließlich durch Untergrund erklärt werden kann. Die zweite Strategie bestand in dem Versuch, mit Hilfe einer Clusteranalyse Punktquellen zu finden. Auch hier wurden keine Hinweise auf Punktquellen gefunden. Schließlich wurde in Richtung von 62 vorselektierten potentiellen Quellen nach Ereignisüberschüssen gesucht -- ebenfalls ohne ein positives Ergebnis. Daraufhin wurden obere Flussgrenzen abgeleitet. Diese Grenzen wurden sowohl richtungsunabhängig als auch für die zuvor selektierten potentiellen Quellen berechnet. In beiden Fällen wurde dabei für das Quellspektrum ein spektraler Index gamma = -2 angenommen. Für Neutrinoenergien E > 10 GeV und Deklinationen > 33 Grad wurden integral folgende globale, obere Flussgrenzen berechnet: Myonfluss: 1.41 * 10^-14 cm^-2 s-1 und Neutrinofluss: 1.65 * 10^-7 cm^-2 s^-1 . Nach der "Eichung" am Fluss atmosphärischer Neutrinos konnte die systematische Unsicherheit auf diese Grenzen zu 46% (systematisch) plus 7% (statistisch) abgeschätzt werden. Für die 62 ausgewählten Quellen wurden individuelle Flussgrenzen berechnet. Diese waren im Durchschnitt etwa einen Faktor drei besser als die integralen Grenzen für den entsprechenden Deklinationsbereich. Bei 48 potentiellen Quellen waren dies sowohl die ersten Grenzen auf ihren Neutrino- als auch die ersten Grenzen auf ihren neutrinoinduzierten Myonenfluss. Für eine weitere Quelle konnte erstmals eine Grenzen auf den Neutrinofluss abgeleitet werden. Bei den 14 restlichen Quellen konnten in fünf Fällen beide bisher publizierten Grenzen verbessert werden, in zwei weiteren zumindest die Grenze auf den Neutrinofluss. Im Anhang werden Daten bereitgestellt, mit denen die errechneten Grenzen auch in Grenzen für andere spektrale Indizes umgerechnet oder auch Grenzen für weitere Quellen abgeleitet werden können.<br>Abstract The young field of high energy neutrino astronomy can be motivated by the search for the origin of the charged cosmic rays. Large astrophysical objects like AGNs or supernova remnants are candidates to accelerate hadrons which then can interact to eventually produce high energy neutrinos. Neutrino-induced muons can be detected via their emission of Cherenkov light in large neutrino telescopes like AMANDA. More than 10^9 atmospheric muon events and approximately 5000 atmospheric neutrino events were registered by AMANDA-B10 in 1997. Out of these, 223 atmospheric neutrino candidate events have been extracted. This data set contains approximately 15 background events. It allows to confirm the expected sensitivity of the detector towards neutrino events. A second set containing 369 events (approximately 270 atmospheric neutrino events and 100 atmospheric muon events) was used to search for extraterrestrial neutrino point sources. Neither a binned search, nor a cluster search, nor a search for preselected sources gave indications for the existence of a strong neutrino point source. Based on this result, flux limits were derived. Assuming E^-2 neutrino spectra, typical flux limits for selected sources of the order of 10^-14 cm^-2 s^-1 for muon fluxes and 10^-7 cm^-2 s^-1 for neutrino fluxes have been obtained.

Neutrinooszillationen sind ein sehr aktives Forschungsfeld. In den letzten Jahrzehnten haben viele Experimente das Phänomen untersucht und sind inzwischen zu Präazisionsmessungen vorangeschritten. Mit seiner Niederenergieerweiterung DeepCore kann das IceCube-Experiment zu diesem Forschungsfeld beitragen. IceCube ist ein 1 km^3 großes Tscherenkow-Neutrino-Teleskop, welches das tiefe, antarktische Eis des Südpols als optisches Medium nutzt. DeepCore ist eine Erweiterung mit dichterer Instrumentierung im unteren Teil des IceCube-Teleskops. Diese dichte Instrumentierung ermöglicht den Nachweis von Neutrinos mit Energien ab einer Energieschwelle von etwa 10 GeV. Jedes Jahr werden Tausende von atmosphärischen Neutrinos oberhalb dieser Schwelle in DeepCore detektiert. Eine Bestimmung der Energie der Neutrinos und des durch sie zurückgelegten Weges durch die Erde ermöglicht die Messung von Neutrinooszillationen. In dieser Arbeit werden zunächst die Möglichkeiten von DeepCore diskutiert, Oszillationen auf unterschiedliche Weise zu messen. Das Verschwinden von Myon-Neutrinos wird als erfolgsversprechender Prozess ausgewählt. Darauf folgt die Beschreibung einer Methode zur Identifizierung von Tscherenkow-Photonen, welche detektiert wurden, bevor sie gestreut wurden -sogenannte- direkte Photonen. Mit Hilfe dieser Photonen kann der Zenitwinkel der Myon-Neutrinos bestimmmt werden. Auch die Energie der Neutrinos wird rekonstruiert. In den Jahren 2011 und 2012 wurden innerhalb von 343 Tagen mit dieser Analyse 1487 Neutrinokandidaten mit Energien zwischen 7 GeV und 100 GeV in DeepCore gefunden. Vergleicht man diese Zahl mit der erwarteten Zahl vom atmosphärischen Neutrinofluss ohne Oszillationen, so ergibt sich ein Defizit von etwa 500 Ereignissen. Die Osziallationsparameter, die die Daten am besten beschreiben, sind im Einklang mit den Parametern, die von anderen Experimenten veröffentlicht wurden.<br>The study of neutrino oscillations is an active field of research. During the last couple of decades many experiments have measured the effects of oscillations, pushing the field from the discovery stage towards an era of precision and deeper understanding of the phenomenon. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, with its low energy subarray, DeepCore, has the possibility of contributing to this field. IceCube is a 1 km^3 ice Cherenkov neutrino telescope buried deep in the Antarctic glacier. DeepCore, a region of denser instrumentation in the lower center of IceCube, permits the detection of neutrinos with energies as low as 10 GeV. Every year, thousands of atmospheric neutrinos around these energies leave a strong signature in DeepCore. Due to their energy and the distance they travel before being detected, these neutrinos can be used to measure the phenomenon of oscillations. This work starts with a study of the potential of IceCube DeepCore to measure neutrino oscillations in different channels, from which the disappearance of muon neutrinos is chosen to move forward. It continues by describing a novel method for identifying Cherenkov photons that traveled without being scattered until detected direct photons. These photons are used to reconstruct the incoming zenith angle of muon neutrinos. The total energy of the interacting neutrino is also estimated. In data taken in 343 days during 2011-2012, 1487 neutrino candidates with an energy between 7 GeV and 100 GeV are found inside the DeepCore volume. Compared to the expectation from the atmospheric neutrino flux without oscillations, this corresponds to a deficit of about 500 muon neutrino events. The oscillation parameters that describe the data best are in agreement with the results reported by other experiments. The method and tools presented allow DeepCore to reach comparable precision with the current best results of on-going experiments once five years of data are collected.

La muographie est une technique d’imagerie en physique des particules où les muons atmosphériques traversant une cible sont utilisés pour déterminer des informations de l’intérieur de la cible : distribution de la densité ou composition chimique via le numéro atomique. En fonction de l’énergie des muons et de la quantité de matière à traverser, il y en a qui vont survivre et d’autres qui vont être arrêtés par la cible. Et, la diffusion des muons dépend, en première approximation, de leur impulsion et du numéro atomique moyen le long de leur parcours de vol. La muographie propose, à partir de la mesure de la transmission et/ou de la diffusion des muons à travers la cible, de fournir des informations sur son intérieur.Il existe actuellement deux types de muographie : la muographie par transmission où le flux transmis des muons à travers la cible est mesuré pour inférer la distribution de densité de la cible et la muographie par diffusion où la diffusion des muons à travers la cible est utilisée pour déterminer la distribution du numéro atomique de la cible. Cette thèse traite de la muographie par transmission pour radiographier les volcans.Dans le cas de la muographie par transmission, un télescope à muons est utilisé pour mesurer le flux transmis des muons atmosphériques à travers la cible. Ce flux est, en première approximation, une fonction bijective de la quantité de matière rencontrée par les muons. L’idée est d’inverser le nombre de muons mesurés en une estimation de la densité de la cible.Il existe d’autres méthodes d’imagerie en géophysique permettant de reconstruire la densité d’une cible. C’est le cas, par exemple, de la gravimétrie et de l’imagerie par sismicité. Ces méthodes dites conventionnelles présentent des faiblesses. Pour ces méthodes, le problème d’inversion est soit mal posé, c’est-à-dire il n’existe pas de solution unique ou la solution présente de grandes variations pour de petites variations des paramètres dont elle dépend. Un ensemble de contraintes supplémentaires sont alors ajoutées pour enlever la non-unicité.En muographie par contre, le problème d’inversion est bien posé et la solution est unique. Les méthodes conventionnelles en géophysique ne permettent pas, à elles seules, de déterminer la densité de la cible. Jointes avec la muographie, elles présentent de gros potentiel, soit en fournissant d’autres informations sur la roche et/ou sur la nature de l’eau, soit en améliorant la précision sur la reconstruction de la densité de la cible.Plusieurs expériences utilisent l’approximation CSDA (Continuous Slowing Down Approximation) pour estimer la probabilité de survie des muons à travers une cible. Le fait d’utiliser cette approximation, donc de négliger le caractère stochastique de l’interaction des muons avec la matière, sous-estime la probabilité de survie des muons et par conséquent induit des effets systématiques sur la reconstruction de la densité. Dans les kilomètres de roche standard l’effet est de 3% - 8% en fonction de la modélisation de l’interaction des muons de hautes énergies avec la matière. (...)<br>Muography is an imaging technique in particle physics where atmospheric muons passing through a target are used to determine information about the interior of the target : density distribution or chemical composition via the atomic number. Depending on the energy of the muons and the amount of matter they have to cross, some of them will survive and others will be stopped by the target. And, the diffusion of the muons depends, to a first approximation, on their momentum and the average atomic number along their flight path. Muography proposes, from the measurement of the transmission and/or diffusion of muons through a target, to provide information about its interior.There are currently two types of muography : transmission muography, where the transmitted flux of muons through the target is measured to infer the density distribution of that target, and diffusion muography, where the diffusion of muons through the target is used to determine the distribution of the atomic number of the target. This thesis discusses transmission muography in order to radiography volcanoes.In the case of transmission muography, a muon telescope is used to measure the transmitted flux of atmospheric muons through the target. This flux is, to a first approximation, a bijective function of the amount of matter encountered by the muons. The idea is to invert the measured number of muons into a density estimation of the target.There are other imaging methods in geophysics that can be used to reconstruct the density of a target. This is the case, for example, of gravimetry and seismic imaging. These so-called conventional methods have weaknesses. For these methods, the inversion problem is either ill-posed, i.e. there is no unique solution, or the solution presents large variations for small variations of the parameters on which it depends. A set of additional constraints are then added to remove the non-uniqueness.In muography however, the inversion problem is well posed and the solution is unique. Conventional geophysical methods alone cannot determine the density of a target. Combined with muography, they have great potential, either by providing other information on the rock and/or on the nature of the water, or by improving the accuracy of the target density reconstruction.Several experiments use the CSDA (Continuous Slowing Down Approximation) approximation to estimate the survival probability of muons through a target. Using this approximation, thus neglecting the stochastic character of the interaction of muons with matter, underestimates the muon survival probability and therefore induces systematic effects on the density reconstruction. In standard rock kilometers the effect is 3% - 8% depending on the modeling of the interaction of high energy muons with matter. In addition, a bad estimation of the background of the low momentum muons affecting the measurement of the signal results in an underestimation of the density of the target with respect to the gravimetry. This probably comes from the use of the analytical approximation to simulate the propagation of the muons through the target and the difficulty of rejecting in the measurement those with low momentum. For these reasons, in the Muon IMaging (MIM) experiment (where this thesis was conducted), we use a Monte Carlo treatment to simulate the muon transport through the target. In this case, we can accurately estimate the effet of these low momentum muons on the density reconstruction. One of the techniques used in our experiment, to make the low momentum muons scatter so that they can be statistically rejected, is to insert a thickness of lead between the telescope detection planes. Al momento ANTARES è il più grande telescopio di neutrini sottomarino ed è situato nel Mar Meditteraneo, circa 40 km a largo di Tolone, Francia, ad una profondità di 2450 m in fondo al mare. Lo scopo principale di ANTARES è quello di poter osservare neutrini di alta energia riconducibili a sorgenti astrofisiche. Un fondo irriducibile del rivelatore è rappresentato dai muoni atmosferici, prodotti dalle interazioni dei raggi cosmici con i nuclei dell’atmosfera. La collaborazione ANTARES fa largo uso di simulazioni Monte Carlo e recentemente è stata rilasciata una nuova versione della simulazione che tiene conto di effetti di invecchiamento del rivelatore al fine di migliorare l’accordo tra la simulazione ed i dati. In questa tesi, utilizzando eventi di neutrini di tipo sciame, si sono confrontate la vecchia e la nuova simulazione Monte Carlo, in particolare ci si è concentrati sulla reiezione del fondo dovuto ai muoni atmosferici.

Les muons atmosphériques sont des particules élémentaires créées lors de l’interaction des rayons cosmiques de haute énergie avec les atomes de la haute atmosphère. Leur capacité à traverser de grandes quantités de matière et leur abondance au niveau du sol permet d’utiliser leur flux comme support à la radiographie de grands objets. Cette technique, la muographie, possède notamment comme sujet d’application possible l’étude de volcans. La collaboration Tomuvol, au sein de laquelle cette thèse s’est déroulée, vise à mettre au point un détecteur et les techniques d’analyse permettant la réalisation d’une telle mesure avec comme sujet d’étude un volcan auvergnat : le Puy de Dôme. Ce manuscrit présente les contributions à ce travail du point de vue instrumental tout d’abord, avec la calibration et l’optimisation des performances des chambres GRPC utilisées pour la mesure. Les performances du détecteur lors des diverses campagnes de prise de données qui se sont déroulées au pied du Puy de Dôme sont également résumées. Dans une deuxième partie, l’accent est porté sur l’analyse physique des données obtenues avec, dans un premier temps, la description des travaux de simulation Monte-Carlo mis en œuvre avec le logiciel GEANT4. Puis, une technique d’estimation du flux transmis de muons atmosphériques à l’aide d’une méthode de type noyaux est présentée, et la carte de densité estimée du Puy de Dôme qui en découle est comparée aux résultats issus de techniques géophysiques<br>Atmospheric muons are elementary particles originating from the interaction of high energy cosmic rays with atoms in the upper atmosphere. Their ability to travel through a large amount of matter and their abundance at ground level allows for their flux to be used as a probe for the radiography of big objects. This technique, muography, can in particular be of interest for the study of volcanoes. The Tomuvol collaboration, within which this thesis took place, aims at developing a detector and analysis techniques allowing to perform such a measurment, using a volcano from Auvergne as a case study : the Puy de Dôme. This document describes the author’s contributions to this work, focusing on the intrumentation aspect first, with the calibration and optimisation of the GRPC chambers used to perform the measurment. The performances of the detector during the various campaigns of data acquisition at the base of the Puy de Dôme are also sumed up. A second part is dedicated to the physical analysis of the data with, firstly, the description of the Monte-Carlo simulations that were developed using the GEANT4 software. Then, a kernel-like estimation method of the transmitted flux of atmospheric muons is described, and the density map of the Puy de Dôme thus obtained is compared to results coming from geophysical techniques

碩士<br>國立中央大學<br>太空科學研究所<br>94<br>The goal of this project is to build a particle detector array and to study the possibility of using this array to detect atmospheric muons from near horizon. First, we assembled the detectors, and then measured some basic specifications of those 4 detectors. We then design and construct a detector array. By using this detector array, we measured horizontal muons for 80 hours. Data collected during this experiment were then analyzed. Two types of events are presented, one is near horizontal direction (86.2�a < �� < 93.8�a, �� is zenith angle) ; the other types is slanted events (downward events 77.3�a < �� < 84.8�a or upward events 95.2�a < �� < 102.7�a). Events were detected in both cases, which prove this type of detector array can detect horizontal muons. These horizontal events are quite abundant, although much fewer then those events from the vertical direction. In conclusion, we have confirmed the possibility of using such particle detector array to detect horizontal muon events. There are many unknowns exist, which require some further researches.

Cosmic rays of energies above 1014 eV are detected mostly indirectly, by observing the extensive air showers they create in the atmosphere. Multiple experiments suggest that the current models of high-energy interactions do not describe the cosmic ray data perfectly, in particular when it comes to the prediction for the number of muons at ground. We present two models aiming to improve the description of the muon component, one based on the addition of particles with small momenta in the local center-of-mass frame of the high-energy hadronic interactions in the shower, the other on the addition of the so-called dark photons to the electromagnetic part of the shower. While we find the latter having no observable consequences, the former improves the agreement between observed and predicted amounts of muons both for the DELPHI cosmic ray data and for the measurements by the Pierre Auger Observatory. We also describe the FRAM telescope, a device used to monitor the atmosphere at the Pierre Auger Observatory, and its applications to the search for anomalous shower profiles and to the measurement of the aerosol content of the atmosphere, which is crucial for the analysis of data obtained by fluorescence detectors. 1
