Resumen
Thucydides presents the words and deeds of individuals chiefly in terms of their importance for understanding the war. He characterizes leading actors through their speeches, indications of motivation, authorial comments, and the narrative itself. These techniques allow remarkable nuance, even ambiguity, of interpretation. This chapter examines the representations of Pericles, Nicias, Alcibiades, Brasidas, and Thucydides himself, highlighting the similar and contrasting traits that unite them. In Thucydides’ narrative, Pericles’ pride in Athens, refusal to yield to Sparta, and brilliant oratory lead Athens into the war. Nicias evaluates the expedition to Sicily with Periclean prudence, but his fear of a change in fortune and of the Athenian assembly lead to the expedition’s defeat. Alcibiades shares Pericles’ aristocratic background and strategic imagination, but his self-centeredness and contempt for customs twice cause the Athenians to lose trust. Through delineating these individual characteristics and behaviors, Thucydides clarifies the war's narrative.

Resumen
This Handbook presents important developments in the field of nanoscience and technology, focusing on the advances made with a host of nanomaterials including DNA and protein-based nanostructures. Topics include: optical properties of carbon nanotubes and nanographene; defects and disorder in carbon nanotubes; roles of shape and space in electronic properties of carbon nanomaterials; size-dependent phase transitions and phase reversal at the nanoscale; scanning transmission electron microscopy of nanostructures; the use of microspectroscopy to discriminate nanomolecular cellular alterations in biomedical research; holographic laser processing for three-dimensional photonic lattices; and nanoanalysis of materials using near-field Raman spectroscopy. The volume also explores new phenomena in the nanospace of single-wall carbon nanotubes; ZnO wide-bandgap semiconductor nanostructures; selective self-assembly of semi-metal straight and branched nanorods on inert substrates; nanostructured crystals and nanocrystalline zeolites; unusual properties of nanoscale ferroelectrics; structural, electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of carbon-fullerene-based polymers; fabrication and characterization of magnetic nanowires; and properties and potential of protein-DNA conjugates for analytic applications.

Resumen
This article examines the properties of some self-organized nanostructured surfaces with respect to specific model reactions, from a surface-science point of view. It begins with an overview of the most important types of nanostructured surfaces, their preparation and characterization. It then considers the fundamentals of reaction processes, focusing on the kinetics and dynamics of adsorption and desorption. It also describes the experimental techniques used in the context of reaction studies under ultrahigh-vacuum conditions. Finally, it presents some experimental results of model reactions, including hydrogen adsorption and desorption on stepped nickel surfaces, methanol adsorption on self-assembled copper-copper oxide surfaces, and hydrogen desorption and water formation on vanadium-oxide nanostructures on palladium surfaces.

Resumen
Fashion and Beauty in the Time of Asia centralizes fashion and beauty in the shaping of Asian modernities and the formation of the so-called Asian Century. The authors assembled here train our eyes on sites as far-flung and varied and yet as intimate and intimately connected as Guangzhou and Los Angeles, Saigon and Seoul, New York and Toronto, in order to map the transnational and transregional connections that have made new worlds and life paths possible. By connecting individual stories to large-scale circuits, this interdisciplinary anthology moves beyond common characterizations of Asians and Asian diasporic subjects as simply abject laborers or frenzied consumers of fashion and beauty. Instead, this collection analyzes what modern subjects look like, what they wear, how they work, move, eat, and shop, helping us to see the forms of modernity taking shape in Asia—the aspirations it expresses and the sensibilities it endorses—and the ways they inform our understanding of race, nation, and the global.
