Texto completoFollowing the end of the Stalinist era in 1956, a gradual process of liberalization begins in Czech culture, the height of which is reached during the events surrounding 1968. Creative theory and criticism search for a new position between 1957 and 1970, a position from which it would to be possible not only to interpret' Czech culture's part and contemporary world art, but also the general problems of modem art, the mechanisms of its development, its limits, and its place in society. This paper contains an analysis of the key opinions of Czech theory and criticism, which emanate from texts commenting on and justifying the most distinctive trends of period graphic art: the modernism of the Fifties, the informal art of the period 1960-1965, the object art and the new figuration from 1965 onwards, and the neo-constructivism of the period 1964-t970. The paper shall attempt to demonstrate that the texts analysed do not limit themselves only to an interpretation of problems in isolation, but collectively create a specific, theoretical sketch that defines the critical opinions of the subsequent period and whose influence is evident to this day

Texto completoThis study is not aimed at presenting the history of Vienna and Prague, the capitals of the Austrian monarchy, during the Baroque age. Rather, it analyzes the image the contemporary people wanted to convey of these two capitals during the entrenchment of counter-reformation and the consolidation of the Habsburg power. The image of the city was consciously instrumentalized as a mental weapon by social and political actors. The contemporary authors of those towns cities praised these cities on the basis of Christian glory, though differences of treatment appeared between Vienna and Prague. Many travellers adopted this image and thereby strengthened the official picture of the cities. This image fulfilled several purposes : the challenges it faced were spiritual, religious and political. By describing the urban microcosm the authors intended to express their view on the world

Texto completoThis dissertation sets forth to explicate the transfers that occurred in photography between France and the Czech Lands during the interwar period. Rooted in a material approach towards the various circulations of individuals, images and concepts, this study considers the Czech photographic scene in light of its specific relation to France and analyzes the resulting hybridizations. The research focuses on photographic vectors such as photomechanical reproductions, exhibition catalogues and the activities of mediators and photographers working between the two countries. It illuminates a network of relations between French, German and Russian impulses and describes also the export of a local photographic production. The Czech surrealist current is a prominent hybridization that resulted from the strong reception of the French photographic scene. It was exported again as an original Czech production, and as such exemplifies the process of mutual circulation and transformation that describes the concept of transfer. An expansive study of Czech journeys to France, their photographic experience of the country and their subsequent contribution to the “Paris school of photography” complete this overview of the interactions and transfers between both countries.By situating Czech photography within the discourse of cultural transfers, this dissertation reveals actors, images, concepts and developments that until now have been critically absent from national photography histories. It also demonstrates how the receptivity of Czech photographers to France in return favored the emergence of photographic modernism in their country
