Resumen
In 1969, Columbia University banned Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) from campus. In 2004, Teachers College’s Warner Burke, a senior professor of psychology and Army officer veteran, saw an opportunity to close this civil–military gap. Burke partnered with West Point to educate West Point cadets’ primary leader developers, its 36 company tactical officers, through hosting them annually in a world-class Master of Social-Organizational Psychology. In 2010, Burke welcomed the Army Fellows program to campus, bringing in one or two senior Army officers a year to study under his mentorship. Since Burke courageously showed the way, Columbia has welcomed ROTC back to campus and now boasts the largest numbers of veteran students in the Ivy League. Most recently, Burke built a third program, this one to educate critical Army leaders who historically did not have access to elite higher education, its noncommissioned officer corps.

Resumen
ABSTRACT Introduction Recruit training is the initial entry for enlisted personnel in the military. The Services execute gender-integrated recruit training differently. The U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) maintains same-gender platoons led by same-gender drill instructors in integrated companies; further integration occurs at select training events. The other Services train recruits in gender-integrated units with mixed-gender drill instructor teams. We examine recruits’ experiences and perceptions of gender integration at recruit training, their desired level of integration, and preferences for increasing gender integration, comparing by Service and gender. Materials and Methods Recruit perspectives and experiences were captured in a 19-question survey (n = 632) and 90-min focus groups (n = 260) near graduation from recruit training. Data were collected from June to November 2021. Because of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic restrictions, the Navy and Air Force were not conducting gender-integrated recruit training during data collection. Outcome variables were compared cross-Service by gender and within Service by gender using chi-squared tests or Fisher’s exact tests, as appropriate; focus group data were analyzed using initial and secondary coding schemes. Three USMC training models, varied by level of integration, were also analyzed (Male-Only, Series Track, and Integrated Company). Results Significant gender differences across and within Service emerged in recruits’ experience being trained by an opposite-gender instructor. Male recruits had significant differences by Service (P < .001), and USMC female recruits reported being trained by male instructors more than their male peers by female instructors (Series Track P = .002; Integrated Company P < .001). In the focus groups, recruits described common differences with how men and women embodied being a drill instructor. Significant gender differences across (both male and female P < .001) and within Service were reported for closeness of training with opposite-gender peers (Air Force P = .028; U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Integrated Company P = .010; Army P = .048), an expected finding given varied integration during data collection. Male and female recruits had significant differences by Service in their preference for integration at the lowest unit level (both male and female P < .001), with those who experienced integrated training showing higher levels of endorsement. In the focus groups, recruits articulated benefits and challenges of gender-integrated recruit training. Significant gender differences across Service emerged in preferences for more integration in specific training activities. Within Service, female USMC Integrated Company recruits wanted more integration in tactical/field, physical fitness, and classroom training than their male peers (P < .001 for all). In the focus groups, USMC recruits of both genders desired more integrated training events, particularly those involving combat and tactical skill development. Conclusions This study provided an opportunity to examine recruit perspectives on gender-integrated training. Services valuing opposite-gender instructor exposure in recruit training must ensure that male recruits are being taught and led by female instructors given disproportionate demographics. Recruits who experienced integrated training were more supportive of integration, indicating that this experience may increase their support for gender-integrated training units and environments. Today’s recruits understand that they are entering gender-integrated working environments, and our results indicate that they expect recruit training to mirror that reality.

Resumen
In 1673 Constantin Şerban formed a banner (military unit, company) of light-cavalry in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for the purpose of waging war against Turkey. The banner followed the Wallachian model of service. The unit’s founder was the Hospodar (ruler) of Wallachia from the period 1654-1658. Since 1661 he has been living in political exile in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The banner he had formed was a part of the Polish (Crown) army establishment until 1676, when it was disbanded. The banner’s actual commander was Florian Dobrzelewski, a nobleman from Sieradz. The Hospodar’s cavalry banner fought in the battle of Chocim in November 10–11, 1673, after which it was transformed into a unit of heavy cavalry on the orders of the Grand Crown Hetman, Jan Sobieski. This transformation entailed an obligation to raise the standard of equipment and to increase the soldiers’ quarterly pay from 31 to 41 Zlotys. At the turn of the years 1673 and 1674 the unit fought alongside the corps of Mikolaj Hieronim Sieniawski in Moldova. Along with its rittmeister Constantin, the unit also took part in the autumn-winter military campaign of 1674–1675. In 1676 the unit was obligatorily equipped with lances, like other banners of heavy cavalry. Afterwards, it became a part of the Michal Zbrozek’s group. Next, the unit found itself in the composition of the crew of Stanislawow, where it took part in the successful defense of this fortress against the main Turkish forces in September. The banner’s size regulated by the letter of recruitment should have amounted to 100 horses. In fact, however, it was far from that number, having no more than 30 people shortly before its disbandment. The unit was composed of the residents of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Some of them can be identified as members of the Podolian nobility

The Royal Army Medical Corps came into existence on 1st July 1898, in response to dissatisfaction with the organisation and efficiency of the Army Medical Service. Although much of the pressure/or change came from officers within the service, a significant factor was the campaign conducted by a civilian, Alexander Ogston, Professor of Surgery at Aberdeen.

Resumen
Abstract Introduction This study was conducted to identify and understand the current factors affecting recruitment, job satisfaction, and retention of U.S. Army Medical Corps officers and provide historical background to understand if the current factors are dissimilar. Materials and Methods An anonymous, voluntary questionnaire was sent to U.S. Army Medical Corps officers, and responses were tabulated and analyzed. Historical research was conducted and historical analysis applied. Results Recruiting, job satisfaction, and retention among Army Medical Corps Officers have been problematic throughout the 50-year history of the all-volunteer force. Recruiting has largely been of medical students, with very limited numbers of direct accessions. At times, satisfactory overall numbers have camouflaged shortages in key go-to-war specialties. Also, satisfactory numbers in a specialty have sometimes camouflaged problems in depth of experience. Satisfaction has been seen as a problem but apparently only studied informally and/or episodically. Retention has largely been addressed through service obligations, followed by monetary bonuses, although these have to be across the Department of Defense, limiting service flexibility. There has never been consistent, longitudinal sampling of opinion among Medical Corps Officers to allow senior leaders to influence the Department of Defense policy. A recent (2016) study provides substantial data but should be repeated rather than being isolated. Conclusion As the situation in the Department of Defense and Army Medical Department changes, with more focus on go-to-war specialties, the Army needs to better measure opinion among Medical Corps Officers to inform policy. These studies should be conducted regularly to generate reliable information on trends and allow prioritization of effort to areas that hamper recruiting, undermine satisfaction, and prevent retention.

Resumen
AbstractThe insignia worn by the British and Commonwealth Armed Services are rich in symbolism and meaning to the corps and regiments that wear them. Originally, before the adoption of national uniforms pre-1700s, there was little to distinguish friend from foe. To overcome that problem, certainly in battle, it was common practice to wear some sort of distinctive emblem, such as a sprig of a native plant. This then developed, in the reign of Charles II, to the custom of individual regiments or corps adopting devices and designs of their 'colours', through to modern cap and collar badges. On the centenary of the Royal Army Dental Corps, this paper gives some insight into those designs adopted by the Royal and Commonwealth Dental Corps, when a distinct service of dental care was recognised. They give a fascinating insight into the adoption and amalgamation of both national and dental symbols. The Dental Corps, separate from Army Medical Corps, went on to develop the vital provision of dental healthcare, both in the field and at home.

In the first half of the nineteenth century in Europe, each army used a different colour to mark its medical services: Austria a white flag, France a red one, Spain yellow, others black. Sometimes, the emblems varied from one corps of troops to another. Moreover, the carts used to transport the wounded bore no particular markings to distinguish them from the other army service vehicles, and there was no means of identifying members of the medical corps at a distance.

Resumen
This article examines the imperial Russian army's attempt to formulate a comprehensive nationalities policy for its officer corps after 1905. The army sought to establish service quotas for each nationality according to its percentage of the empire's population. The professed goal of this policy was the preservation of the numerical, and thus cultural, predominance of Orthodox, ethnic Russian officers. Yet this attempt to fashion an officer corps both “imperial” and “Russian” exposed competing paradigms of service, loyalty, and identity among tsarist officers, raising broader questions about the relationship between army, state, and empire. Thus concerns of nationality and nationalism affected the officer corps more deeply than has been assumed. Gregory Vitarbo's work provides new insights into the intersection of military reform, nationality policy, and imperial ideology in the late Russian empire, while further illustrating suggestive linkages with contemporary pan-European trends concerning military practices, nationality politics, and cultural ferment.

Military service has long been seen as one of the few routes available to African American men to demonstrate their rights to full citizenship. In 1942, the Women’s Army Corps (wac) opened this path for black women. More than 6,500 black Wacs served during the Second World War, yet, marginalized while in uniform and later overshadowed in narratives of black servicemen and white servicewomen, they and their unique experiences remain largely unknown outside of academia. This article examines the multiple subordinate positions to which the United States Army confined black Wacs, as black female soldiers, during the first years of the corps; investigates the army’s gender and racial policies and their civilian and military roots; and forefronts the actions of black Wacs who, by challenging their subordination, laid claim to their full rights as soldiers and as citizens.

Dominique Jean Larrey's introduction of a ‘flying ambulance’ into Napoleons army was a great advance in military surgery. British arrangements for the transport of wounded and sick during the Napoleonic wars fell far short of Larrey's humanitarian vision. The efforts of eminent doctors such as Sir James McGrigor to create a formal ambulance service were frustrated by the army establishment. As a result the sick were often abandoned or carried in local bullock carts. Only sixty years after Waterloo did Britain finally follow Larrey's example and form afield organisation including a trained ambulance corps.

During the American Civil War, U.S. Marines rarely engaged in land operations and even more rarely conducted land-based or amphibious operations involving more than one company. The Marine Corps’ lackluster battlefield performance ashore during the Civil War is best understood by examining their poor organization in officer selection, recruiting and retention, ad hoc formations larger than company size, limited collective tactical training, and experience in large-scale ground combat. The focus of this study is on large-scale Marine land operations, involving battalion-size elements assembled on an ad hoc basis and led by either U.S. Navy officers or U.S. Army officers, to analyze Marines’ battlefield performance ashore.

Resumen
America's future federal public works policies must address the twin realities of falling budgets and rising demand for services from public works infrastructure. Federal domestic discretionary spending—nondefense and nonentitlement funding, including most federal public works programs—is shrinking while physical facilities funded by that spending are growing older. Public managers are thus shifting their focus from building new structures to maintaining old ones and improving service delivery to suit present needs. This article reviews the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' response to these changes, especially the national Operations and Maintenance Program Plan of Improvement and the intergovernmental, Corps-facilitated effort known as the Federal Infrastructure Strategy (FIS) Program. The Corps' response to the new infrastructure policy paradigm is a particularly relevant case study.

INTRODUCTION: Aircraft are manufactured according to design parameters that must account for the size and physical characteristics of the pilot. While cockpit dimensions, seats, restraints, and related components do not change substantially over the airframe lifecycle, it is conceivable that the occupant may, even if initially well-suited. This investigation focused on longitudinal body mass index (BMI) changes within a cohort of British Army Air Corps pilots.METHODS: The study was a retrospective examination of electronic medical record data to assess longitudinal change within a representative cohort of Army pilots. Voluntary subjects were assigned unique subject numbers matched with individual electronic medical record data. Subject’s age, service length, height, weight, and BMI were extracted from routine historical aviation medical exams.RESULTS: Among 106 British Army Air Corps pilots, the mean age was 35.3 yr (SD = 7.4) with average length of service as a pilot of 9.0 yr (SD = 5.2). Within the observed cohort, the mean change in individual weight over time was an increase of 4.6 kg (SD = 7.3). Height remained relatively stable with a mean increase of 0.6 cm (SD = 1.9). Given the increase in weight, BMI was noted to increase longitudinally with a mean of 1.3 kg · m−2 (SD = 2.4).DISCUSSION: British Army pilots experience increases in BMI over time much like the general population. Results of this study serve to inform future policy related to the body composition of aviation applicants, the retention of previously qualified pilots, and the safety concerns of crashworthiness design specifications.Porter WD, Wilde GD, Jeffery NP, Walters PL, Eke AJ, Bushby AJR, Adams MS, Gaydos SJ. Resumen
The subject of the research is the figure of Leon Pachucki, a brigadier general of the Polish Army, who took part in World War I and the Polish-Russian War. The aim of the article is to present his military career, both in the Russian Army and later in the Polish Army. The text is based mainly on documents collected in the Central Military Archives, and on available literature supplementing the archival materials. On their basis, it was possible to analyze the stages of his military career, his achievements on the battlefields, his service in higher command positions in the interwar period and his social activities after retirement. He was a hero of the Polish-Russian War in 1920 – for his courage on the battlefield, he was awarded the Order of Virtuti Militari 5th class and the Cross of Valor. The future general was born in 1872 in Suwałki and as a youth he joined the Russian army. He served in this army until 1918, recently in the Russian corps in the Balkans. In spring that year he came to France, where he commanded the 3rd Rifle Regiment (Polish Army in France). Together with him, he came to Poland in April 1919 and took part in the Polish offensive in Volyn. At the end of June this year, he took the position of the commander of the infantry in the 1st Rifle Division of the General Haller's Army. Three months later, he became the commander of the XXV Infantry Brigade. As its commander, he showed courage on leading the defense of the locality of Pohrebyszcze at the turn of May and June 1920. In September 1921, he became the deputy commander of the Corps District No. IV Lodz, and in 1925 he took up a similar position in the Command of the Corps District No. IX Brest. After retiring in 1927, he moved to Lodz, where he died in 1932. It is worth adding, that he was the only one general of the army of the Second Polish Republic buried in this city before World War II.

In terms of service and in terms of budget, KOP was subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior. In terms of wages, KOP soldiers were subject to the provisions of the Act on the remuneration of state officials and the army. Due to the specific nature of the service and to immunize the KOP soldiers against bribery by smugglers and Soviet agents, they were entitled to border allowances. The type of research used in this study is descriptive research. The research suggestions used are qualitative suggestions. The data analysis technique used is descriptive qualitative data analysis techniques. Respect between soldiers and superiors as well as other unit members has been done well. Respectfully agreed upon through good cooperation, upholding the oath of soldiers and Trisillas of the Indonesian Navy and the sultanate of clans. The factor of competition against the army work ethic that is less than optimal is the understanding of soldiers on work ethos in the military environment is still lacking, soldiers lack the ability to develop ethos, still contain less disciplined soldiers as well as an inhibiting factor to develop work ethic in their company. Then as a supporting factor, there is a warrior guide regarding the korsa (esprit de corps) soul continuously. Keywords: work ethic, korsa (esprit de corps) soul, duties and functions

Resumen
Abstract During the 18th century, the officers of the European standing armies were usually of noble origin. The requirements the army had towards the officers conflicted with their own self understanding. It was requirement of them to leave their »lone soldier « attitude behind and subordinate into a hierarchically system. The officer corps of the early modern times were dominated by nobles and the aforementioned conflicts had an impact of different intensity on the relation between the point d’honneur and the requirements of the military service. As for the Prussian example, it was assumed that this conflict between noble origin and military rank was less virulent than in the French army. Reason for that believe was mainly that the majority of the Prussian officers originated from the gentry. It was also assumed that the monarch was able to impose a better discipline among his officers. One group of officers, members of the high nobility, has been completely ignored so far. That comes as a surprise given the fact that they accounted for 10 percent of all generals. Those princes had a protestantic background, served in the army for several reasons and were preferentially promoted. Their service in the army did not come without potential conflicts which required the monarch to compromise and using different strategies to solve them.

Resumen
In the following article, we would like to bring to your attention the results of the research we undertook on the command and organization activity that General D. Papp undertook, both in the service of the Governing Council, especially in the command and organization structure called the Command General Territorial Sibiu (December 1918-April 1919), as well as in the Army of Great Romania in the period April 1918-April 1930. We note that Dănilă Papp was a senior officer and general with military training at the Teresian Military Academy in Wienner-Neustadt and civilian as a graduate of the Faculty of Engineering specializing in Roads, bridges, constructions, fortifications at the Polytechnic in the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was coopted into the structure of the General Territorial Command of Sibiu, serving in the Department of the Army and Public Safety under the coordination of the Romanian politician Ștefan Cicio-Pop and under the orders of General Ioan Boeriu. Organizer of the 16th and 18th divisions formed from Transylvanians, and as commander of the 18th Infantry Division from Sibiu, he participated in the Campaign of the Romanian Army on the Tisza and in Hungary in 1919. He participated as commander general of the 18th Sibiu Infantry Division at the Coronation Celebrations of Their Royal Majesties King Ferdinand and Queen Maria of Great Romania in Alba Iulia and Bucharest between October 15-17, 1922, festivities during which he led the Ardelean Division’s parade. From 1923 he was appointed to the command of the 1st Territorial Army Corps from Craiova, and from April 1, 1924 until April 1, 1930, when he was transferred to the reserve, he was in command of the 6th Territorial Army Corps from Cluj.During the period in which he served the Romanian state and the Royal House of Romania as the commanding officer of the Cluj Army Corps, he distinguished himself in the technical-organizational staff that took care of the smooth running of the Avram Iancu Centenary Celebrations, both in the Apuseni Mountains area and in Cluj during August-September 1924. In the following study, we present the assessments that the senior officers in the rank of General D. Papp made, both on his activity of organization and command, as well as in terms of his qualities and the excellent training that he always showed, referring -us, especially the assessments made by generals Artur Văitoianu, Ioan Boeriu, Ștefan Holban, Henri Cihoski, Nicolae Petala, Gheorghe Mărdărescu, Alexandru Hanzu, Ioan Prodan. For his high merits in the service of the state of Romania, he was decorated with the Order of the Coroana României in the rank of Commander, then with the same Order in the rank of Grand Officer, with the Order of the Steaua României in the rank of Grand Officer,The Victory Medal of the Great War for Civilization (1916-1921), and later with the Order of Ferdinand I in the rank of Grand Officer, and then in the rank of Grand Cross, respectively with the Order of Faithful Service in the rank of Grand Officer.

The paper is devoted to the strokes of the biography of the Serbian Army Colonel A. Srb, which is incorporated into the key events of the political history of Serbia and Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, and he himself was not just a participant in them, but also had some influence on them. A participant in the 1903 Coup and all the vicissitudes of the Serbian politics at the beginning of the 20th century, an active member of the organization "Unification or Death", who arrived in 1916 with Fr. Corfu to Russia to recruit the Serbian Volunteer Corps, became a witness and participant in the difficult events of 1917. The study of his biography, replete with white spots, allows a deeper understanding of the context of the seething political life that took place both in Serbia and Russia.

Resumen
The first three years of the Irish Free State’s existence were among the most crucial in independent Ireland’s history. William T. Cosgrave and his Cumann na nGaedheal (Party of the Irish) governments suppressed an internal revolt, overcame an acute scarcity of money, enacted a constitution, and defined how the state would be governed. They established an Irish civil service, army, courts service, police force and diplomatic corps; passed legislation to purchase the remaining agricultural land held by landlords; commenced exploitation of the natural resources, extended the use of Irish in schools, and began the task of increasing the state’s sovereignty. The administration of the Irish Free State was quickly changed from the British system of loosely co-ordinated boards and departments to a centralised Irish system.

Military pharmacists in the German Empire belonged to the sanitary service corps subordinated to the Ministry of War (Kriegsministerium). In the army, the highest rank was the senior staff pharmacist, other military pharmacists were divided into: pharmacists - one-year volunteers, staff pharmacists and corps staff pharmacists. The subject of this study are “Guidelines for military pharmacists. 100 important questions [prepared] on the basis of the War Sanitary Regulations” (Für Militär- Apotheker. 100 wichtige Fragen und Antworten aus der Kriegs-Sanitäts-Ordnung) collected by staff pharmacist Robert Droste. They were a hundred-point extract from the War Sanitary Regulations (1907), which were in force during World War I. The compendium was intended to make it easier for the addressees of the study – military pharmacists on the battlefield and in the rear of military operations – to quickly understand the regulations in the field of, among others: 1. administering and managing the military sanitary service during the war (including military pharmacists), 2. creating and equipping field pharmacies, or 3. preparing current documentation. Although the guidelines were prepared by a military pharmacist, they did not have the status of an official document because they were not issued by the military authorities.

Resumen
The article deals with the problem kinship ties of officers in the Imperial Russian Army on the eve of the First World War in the context of protectionism in army relations. The subsequent development of the fates of the participants in our sample during the Great War, the Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War is specially considered. The work is based on an electronic database dedicated to the officer corps of the Voronezh, Kursk and Tambov provinces in the period 1914-1922, compiled on the basis of a wide variety of sources of the military revolutionary period. The main task of the work was to identify the influence of kinship ties in the officer environment on the conditions of their service. The author comes to the conclusion that the circumstances of the period of wars and revolution influenced the break in kinship ties. During the First World War, many relative-officers continued to serve in different military units. We haven’t established unambiguous facts of joint service after 1917. The only thing was the fact that both brothers were in the Red Army. Two cases did the brother officers serve with the White Army. We haven’t met a single case that reflects the situation of the brothers' arrival on different sides of the “barricades”. We tried not to make broad generalizations based on dozens of fates. Nevertheless, this gives grounds for the assertion that the fate of the officers-relatives once again showed the crucial and tragic nature of the revolutionary time.

Resumen
The fate of the Hungarian 2nd Army has a significant role in the Hungarian memory. The army was sent to the Eastern Front in 1942 suffered one of the great defeats of the Hungarian military history during the Soviet counter-offensive in January 1943. During the past almost 80 years, different narratives have emerged about it were evolved in the Hungarian public. In the paper the author shall analyse the most significant elements of these narratives. Firstly, there will be examined the genesis and underlying causes of the decision to send the 2nd Army to the Eastern front. The author counter a popular post-war myth that the Hungarian leadership sent out the Hungarian soldiers and labour servicemen with the intention of sacrifice that it could limit Hungary's involvement in the German war effort. Although the Hungarian military leadership discriminated against various social groups (primarily of individuals of Jewish descent, non-Hungarian nationalities) in military service, they did not aim to destroy them. Similarly, the higher proportion of reserve officers and lower social classes (peasantry, workpeople) in the army was misinterpreted. In the second part of the paper the author will examine the interpretations of the defeat in January 1943. As a part of this topic there will be shown how the public opinion and survivors overstated the loss data and the temperature conditions of “the Russian winter.” In addition, the author scrutinize the fighting and withdrawal in January 1943 from the viewpoint of the military discipline. Finally, he analyse the interpretations of two orders. The army commander, Colonel General Jány wrote in his order on 24 January that “the 2nd Army has lost its honour.” Although later he withdrew this order, it became the symbol of the barbarity and betrayal of the Hungarian military elite against the Hungarian soldiers. It received a different opinion on the order of the commander of the III Corps of 1 February 1943, in which Major General Stomm disbanded his formation - which was unprecedented in Hungarian history

Resumen
Performance evaluation is an important tool for effective management. Much of the recent literature has focused on the efficacy of civilian performance appraisal systems. As a result, there is a knowledge gap with respect to military appraisal systems in general, and those of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps in particular. The 1978 Civil Service Reform Act spawned several performance appraisal systems within each of these agencies; the USMC utilizes five separate systems in the evaluation of civilian and military personnel; the Navy has adopted three separate appraisal mechanisms. This article specifically examines the device used to evaluate senior military staff in the Navy and Marine Corps—the fitness report. Because this particular appraisal methodology differs radically from its federal civilian counterparts, a rather detailed descriptive section serves as an orientation for the reader. The approach is intended to supplement John Pelissero's article on performance evaluation in the Department of the Army (Pelissero, 1984).

Resumen
Henry Wade graduated in the Edinburgh Medical School in 1898 before spending two years with the British army during the Anglo-Boer war. Returning to this country, he joined Francis Caird, surgeon to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Appointed Conservator of the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Wade met young William Ford Robertson. In a study of experimental cancer they concluded that some neoplasms were caused by bacteria. Wade became increasingly recognised as an authority in urology. His growing practice was interrupted by the First World War. Already a member of the Royal Army Medical Corps, he served for five years in the Middle East, in Gallipoli and then with the army in an approach to Jerusalem. Resuming civilian life, Wade combined an extensive urological practice with membership of the Council of the RCSEd. He became President in 1935. Married in 1924, his wife died four years later after an operation by a colleague, David Wilkie. Director of Surgery to the Scottish Emergency Medical Service when the Second World War broke out, Wade was made a Knight Bachelor in 1946. He died in 1955.

Resumen
The article focuses on the level of prosperity of the ranks of the Special Gendarme Corps and its trends during the post-reform and late imperial period. It carries out comparative analysis of several categories of gendarme employees and identifies disparities in their financial standing. There were more than a dozen basic and supplementary allowances, which were both permanent and temporary and were paid for by the Treasury. During the period under review, there was the growth in the monetary income of gendarmes, which enabled them to see themselves as being superior to people of other socio-professional categories such as senior and mid-ranking army officers and police officers. This thesis implicitly confirms that bribery was not widely spread among gendarmes. However, there was impoverishment among the gendarmerie personnel because they did not have any other source of income besides service-related earnings. This made them rather vulnerable, resulting in revitalization measures of social support of gendarme employees. A characteristic feature of material provision for gendarmes during the period under review was a widening gap between allowances for the officers and lower ranks. Gendarmes of lower ranks usually had big families and therefore were often in want for money. In other words, they had a lower standard of well-being. As a result, many of them being unable to support their families had to leave the Special Gendarme Corps and search for other livelihoods. Partially, they managed to improve their predicament by using alternative sources of income such as renting out, subsistence farming and service-related odd jobs. However, these sources were not widely available.

Resumen
In summer 1916 the British Salonica Army and the Cypriot colonial government established the Cypriot Mule Corps (also known as the Macedonian Mule Corps). It was a staggering success in terms of recruitment, with over 12,000 men serving at one time or another in Salonica during the war and in Constantinople after the armistice, consisting of about 25% of the Cypriot male population aged 18–35. This article engages with three historiographical fields: British military history, British imperial history and Cypriot colonial and peasant and labouring history. All three are connected by the scope, the Great War and its immediate aftermath, and more specifically by the Cypriot Mule Corps. It brings Cyprus into the broader debate on the participation of the British non-settler empire in World War I. The main focus of the article is on the experiences of the men and their dependants. At the heart of this story is the power-imbalance in the relationship between the British coloniser, who desperately needed mule drivers, and the colonised Cypriots, mostly peasants and unskilled rural and urban labourers who enlisted because of the wages. The Cypriots had little control over the terms of their service, as the British progressively reduced their responsibilities to the men and their families, but because the British were desperate for their service they attempted to accommodate their grievances. Therefore, the article proposes to envisage the experience of Cypriot muleteers and their families through a theoretical framework borrowed from the Subaltern Studies Group. Homi Bhabha's ‘liminal space’, in which ‘negotiation’ can take place between colonised and coloniser, seems applicable here, even if dominated by the coloniser. When it suited them, such as when recruitment was at risk, the British not only listened but attempted to rectify the injustices, even showing flexibility; but when it did not they proved inflexible.

The subject of this research is the formation of the higher command personnel of the foreign order regiments in 1654. The article examines the details of the biographies of 37 commanders of the foreign order regiments that existed by the beginning of the Russo-Polish War of 1654–1667, namely their origin in Russia, foreign service experience, production in the ranks, ethnic composition, attitude towards Orthodoxy, army allocation in the campaign of 1654, and share of troops they led in the chief armies. The work is based on the wide array of documentary materials of IInozemsky Prikaz (Office for the Affairs of the Foreigners) and Posolsky Prikaz (Ambassadorial Office); some of the materials are newly introduced to the scientific discourse. This article is first to explore the biographies of majority of commanders of foreign order regiments in 1654. Analysis is conducted on their origin, production in the Russian prior to the Russo-Polish War, participation in the campaign of 1654, ethnic composition, confession; classification is offered based on the service experience in Western European countries. The analysis of officer “services” acknowledges that the foreign order regiments in the chief armies were led by the most competent newcomer foreigners with the Western European military experience. The young Russian officers service led by the experienced foreigners became a pivotal stage in the formation of the national officer corps.

Resumen
The paper attempts to identify the features inherent in the military reforms of Emperor Paul I (1796–1801) on a regional scale, on the territory of Siberia. The personnel composition of the staff and chief officer ranks of the field regiments of the Siberian Division is considered according to the data for 1798–1799. The parameters such as the age and social origin of officers, the time of their military service and combat experience, disciplinary indicators are analyzed. As a result of the research, it was found that not all of Paul I’s innovations were put into practice in the field units of the Russian army stationed in Siberia by the end of the 18th century. In particular, the Russian nobles made up a significant but not dominant group among the officers, and most of them belonged to small-scale or had no serfs at all. The group of hereditary military, persons of non-noble origin, staff and chief officers’ children, was increased. Neither the widespread idea of the predominance of foreigners in command positions during the reign of Paul I, nor the popular thesis about the massive spread of severe disciplinary punishments in the Russian army, could be confirmed. In addition, the reforms resulted in decreasing to a certain extent the combat capability of these units, as evidenced by the significant rejuvenation of the personnel of their officer corps and the obvious lack of experience of participation in hostilities among most officers.

Resumen
The armed confrontation in early 1944 in the proximity of Kovel within the context of the Soviet-German war is primarily known for the local victory of three incomplete German divisions over the army corps of the first Belarusian Front of the Red Army. Main role in this episode of the World War II was played by the coordinated actions of Wehrmacht and SS units – in particular, attempts to break through of the SS panzer company under the commander of Carl Nicollusi-Lek in the surrounded Kovel, and attack of the 4thWehrmacht panzer division by Dietrich von Sauken in the city, blocked by the Red Army. The actions, which took place in January-March 1944 didn’t change the balance of power at the Eastern front. But for some time they shifted the frontline in northwestern Volyn in the advantage of the German side. Also, to some extent, this victory helped German propaganda to maintain the fighting spirit of the army (which melted uncontrollably), just like a bit later, near Warsaw in August 1944. At the same time, since the formation of the German occupation, Volhynia has become a battlefield for a number of underground organization – primarily Ukrainian and Polish. This was caused by the polyethnic nature of the former Eastern Lands of the Second Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the specifics of the administrative management of Ukrainian territories by the Third Reich, German actions to "pacify" the local population. German side was actively promoting the incitement of ethnic hatred between Poles and Ukrainians. The latter resulted in a series of armed actions by units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the Home Army (Armia Krajowa), directed against Polish and Ukrainian civil populace, respectively, in 1943. Active phase of this fight hadn’t stopped at the beginning of the following year. At that time, there were departments of UPA-North working in this region, reorganized after the Conference of military officers in 1942: from the Polish side in confrontation were involved 27th division of the Home Army and “Khlopsky’s batallions”. With the shifts of Soviet-German front line, Soviet partisans had begun to come to Volhynia, and they had an experience in confrontation both with German troops, UPA and AK.

The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) was formed in 1942, with strong support from the major engineering institutions, as the Army's professional repair and recovery corps. Its role has progressively broadened into that of an integrated support organization involved in the whole equipment life cycle: besides repair, its key processes now span engineering policy, fleet management, redesign and modification, spares procurement and future design influence. The past three years have seen radical restructuring and innovation throughout the organization, both in response to wider government and departmental changes and in order to provide a better service to the Army at less cost. Underpinning these changes is a strong ‘total quality’ ethos throughout the organization. REME has entered its second half-century committed to continuous improvement, both in peace and on operations.

Resumen
Military honour and physical commitment to serve king and fatherland played a central role in the ideals of the army of Charles XII of Sweden. These ideals were formed within a culture in which the role of the warrior, dictated by a code of honour, was constantly challenged. My main empirical primary sources consist of the archivale records of the Swedish Diet, which included Placement Committee records from the Diet of 1723. An honourable man had the right to a livelihood and a respectable position in society. My aim is to show that, in order to obtain such a position, a military man had to present himself as someone who had offered his body in the service of his king and country. An appeal to one’s merits in battle was the best way of defending a claim to a post, because bravery in combat was the most respected virtue in military life. Those officers who had clear proof of their bravery, especially in the form of combat wounds, were in the best position. In this sense, honour and the body were closely linked.

Resumen
Abstract A 19-year-old active duty Marine presented to clinic with a history of a reoccurring vesicular rash on left side of his forehead. The lesion was cultured and identified as herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). Herpes gladiatorum is a recurrent cutaneous infection caused by HSV-1 and spread by skin-to-skin contact. Serious complications have been reported, including blindness from acute retinal necrosis. Outbreaks of herpes gladiatorum have been observed in the high school and collegiate wrestling community for years and to prevent the spread, screening, and treatment guidelines have been implemented by governing bodies of these organizations. Active duty members who participate in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program and the Army and US Air Force Combatives programs are exposed to similar conditions; however, no uniform screening or treatment protocol exists. To minimize the spread of skin infections, we propose adopting a uniform screening procedure and implementing a standardized form to assist primary care providers in the evaluation and treatment of herpes gladiatorum and other communicable skin diseases commonly seen in close combat training.

Resumen
This article examines the participation of African Americans in the World War I in the ranks of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during the 1917 – 1918. The author studies the attitude of the African-American community towards participation in the World War I, describes the peculiarities of military service of African American soldiers in the American Expeditionary Forces, and reveals the manifestations of racial discrimination. The article also reviews the attitude of French soldiers and officers towards African American soldiers of the U. S. Army, analyzes the impact of the acquired combat experience and sociocultural interaction with foreign soldiers upon the activity of African American population in fighting for their rights and freedoms in the United States. In Russian historiography, the participation of African Americans in the American Expeditionary Forces during the World War I, peculiarities of their service, and the impact of war on self-consciousness of this category of military servicemen have not previously become the subject of special research. Based on the article. The conclusion is made that the attitude of African American community towards participation in the World War I was quite ambiguous. Their soldiers faced different forms of discrimination during their military service: they could not serve in the Marine Corps and other elite units, and most of the time were engaged in the rear. A different experience received African American soldiers from the units transferred under the leadership of the French Army, whose officers treated them with respect; the blood shed for their country, combat experience and respectful of the allies enhanced desire of the African Americans to gain equal civil rights and freedoms in their homeland.
