Texto completoThis research focuses on manuscript fragments preserved in the State Archives of Modena which originate from the Archivio Estense: it has been revealed that a significant number of these fragments come from the bindings of volumes that make up the archival complex of the House of Este, the largest collection held at the State Archives of Modena - this archival fund spans from 1317 to 1797 and comprises a diverse range of documents in terms of quantity and types, yet it remains coherent due to its origin from a single institutional context. The thesis begins by providing a detailed analysis of the archival history of the fragment collection, tracing its origins and exploring its previous research paths. Additionally, it suggests an ideal expansion of the collection through a census, conducted during the research, that has led to the discovery and identification of approximately 50 new Latin fragments reused in the registers of the Archivio Estense, still in situ. Hence, it will be the first study to disclose a significant portion of the medieval manuscript heritage that has survived in fragmentary form and largely remained unpublished. In contrast to previous research that focused on the analysis of individual exemplars or groups of fragments with similar characteristics (for example, the Hebrew fragments or those with musical notation), this thesis offers a comprehensive approach by examining fragmentary evidence attributable to the same context of reuse. The core of the thesis focuses on the methodology developed for reconstructing provenances defined as "archaeological", i.e. related to the material context of fragment discovery, particularly focusing on witnesses reused in the bindings of the Archivio Estense registers.Furthermore, the thesis includes documentary fragments - typically excluded from fragmentology studies - providing additional research opportunities and offering significant insights into systematic aspects of reuse, especially within the domains ruled by the Este family. This interdisciplinary approach highlights the importance of archival and diplomatic studies in examining manuscript fragments, which were traditionally considered primarily from paleographical and codicological perspectives.A partial catalog of Latin parchment fragments attributed to the Estense Archives is presented, following the descriptive sheet model established in the Fragmentarium database. The analysis of the fragments includes the identification of content, dating, location, as well as material and historical-contextual aspects. In some cases, the common origin of multiple fragments has been recognized, allowing for the reconstruction of membra disiecta.Parallel to this research, a pilot project for digitizing fragments from the State Archives of Modena was carried out in collaboration with the ARCE Studies Center at the University of Bologna. This project focused on selected specimens for cataloging, with metadata coordination undertaken by the thesis author; a report on the activities conducted within the project is included in the thesis, along with reflections on the adopted methodologies

Texto completoIn 2002, the CEAlex received nearly seven thousand documents having the same origin, a Greco-Syrian-Lebanese family. These documents concern the history of Alexandria from 1882 to 1985. They are the sole source of this thesis. The thesis consists of two parts. 1) The story of two families, the Zogheb and Sinano family through four generations. Implanted in Alexandria these conquerors searched and made their fortune, encouraged by Mohammad Ali, in an Egypt which was undergoing modernization. We follow them in their daily life, their neighborhood, their habits, through certain people, places or events that illustrate through very small touches a whole structure of society of “noblemen”. These families are “noble” due to their wealth, their age or their place in the city. These different approaches, different angles, permit, little by little, to give an overview of this micro-society which today no longer exists. 2) The story of Charles Ayoub, an “Alexandrian in his century” whom we follow from childhood to death. A pupil of the Jesuits, then a law student, he joined the services of the State Litigation as a trainee, reaching the rank of Royal Councillor and Head of Litigation. After resigning from the public service, he became a city lawyer. Through his professional and family background, his environment and that of his wife’s, we follow both the decline and the end of a certain society and how Egypt met it’s own destiny. An Egyptian of French culture, belonging to high Alexandrian cosmopolitan society, how did Charles Ayoub integrate and live through the eddies of century, from the khedivial period to the monarchy, the monarchy to the Republic ?

Schuller, Michelle. "Soi et les autres : étude des relations familiales dans les écrits privés florentins des XIVe-XVe siècles". Paris 3, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005PA030072.
Texto completoThe XIVth-XVth Florentine family diaries (and among them the Cronica domestica of Donato Velluti), are dedicated to the celebration of the family. However, the author leads a personal discourse : the expression of self appears through his conscious relation with his own writing, and in the autobiografical dimension of the genealogical account. In the history of the family, the glance related to the others, from now on more attentive with individualities, highlights the family structures, especially the dominating place held by the father. The father writer " governs " his family group by his own behaviour and by the writing of his book : in this book, he endeavours not only to educate the souls and to protect the bodies, but also to form citizens, with the purpose of ensuring the continuity of the family, her economic strength and her politic power in the city, transmitting the values of his social class, while expressing his concerns in front of the escape of time and the evolution of the customs and mentalities

Texto completoThis monograph concerns a family from South-West France, the Vignial , based on a trove of family archives, and public archives: one hundred fifty years ascension, one century stagnation , and a brilliant surge after the Revolution. Seven family fathers since Martin was born in 1545 in Lauragais, down to Pierre who died in Bordeaux in 1834. Peasant-merchant Martin appears as a buyer of land in 1583; the 1596 survey of Revel witnesses the wealth of the royalist church-warden whose son Mathieu marries a noble Toulousaine. Three sons become in Cadillac members of duke d’Epernon’s estates management, fight against the Fronde, and marry nobly, Jean becoming a king’s secretary, and viscount of Castillon. François’s son, a captain at Royal-Vaisseaux, marries a commoner in 1698, ending the family’s ascension, son and grand-son Daniel return to merchandise. Daniel’s son Pierre is a revolutionary at 15, fights in Vendée in 1793, then marries Justine Pérès Duvivier, the daughter to a great trader and owner of Hackaert, a sugar estate in Martinique. Thanks to his network in Paris, to his lawyer friends, and to new political trends, he is appointed a judge by Napoleon in 1806, confirmed in 1814, a vice-president in the Cent-Jours, and revoked by the king end 1815. He becomes majority owner of Hackaert in 1823, and is reinstated as a highly respected judge in 1825; sugar revenues secure a large wealth for him, and a high ranking in the Bordeaux bourgeoisie. The Vignial have been able to take high risks for the sake of their careers; they remain a model of continuity, of network building, and of a professional and geographical mobility, from Lauragais to the Antilles

Texto completoThe rich collections of the younger brother of Louis XIV and his family have been little studied because of their near complete destruction. The study of the silver, jewelry and art objects in precious metal belonging to the Orléans family is further complicated by the disappearance of all household records as well as the documents that were once conserved at the goldsmith's hall from this period (1625-1725). Thanks to the gracious permission of the Orléans family, we have been able to study their private archives and to shed new light on these collections. Among other research, we have transcribed and analyzed fifteen inventories that have allowed us to create a glossary explaining the meaning of terms that have fallen into disuse. Further, we have established a topology, in graph form representing all of the inventoried silverware, over a period of one hundred years, which facilitates comparisons concerning the evolution and ruse of French silver. This research is complemented by documents presented for the first time from English, German and Spanish sources
