Resumen
Central courtyards emerged in many civilizations of the world. Cyprus was no exception as courtyards formed important architectural features throughout the centuries in the residential architecture of the island. The erection of dwellings attached to each other, the need for a private outdoor protected space due to the introverted character of societies, as well as the climatic conditions, i.e. warm Mediterranean climate, led to a widespread use of the courtyard in nearly all traditional residences of the island in the last two centuries. Apart from vernacular architecture, courtyards appeared in earlier historic periods and, in some cases, they were found to be used in the residential architecture of more recent decades. This paper presents an analytical study of the social and environmental aspects of courtyards in the vernacular dwellings of Cyprus. The research underlines the role of the courtyard as an important social gathering area, as well as a microclimate regulator in the residences. Moreover, it highlights its bioclimatic significance in enhancing the integration of nature's elements into the design and overall architectural concept of the dwelling.

Resumen
Vernacular architecture clearly expresses the strong relationship between man and his surrounding environment, as it represented a mirror reflected the material and human requirements and components of the environment that corresponds to it. From the standpoint of vernacular architecture which is compatible with the environment came as a contemporary innate expression of the reality of place and time, we are trying in this paper to come up with a clear definition of vernacular architecture and the features that characterized it as an attempt to add the human touch to modern architecture, and this is done by studying the vernacular architecture of and analyzing factors Influencing its urban formation, then exposure to the vernacular design of residential buildings and the extent of their environmental and cultural compatibility. The paper concludes with analysis, deduction and evidence that vernacular architecture produces a distinctive local character whose built environment is compatible with local nature and cultures and this is what supports the individual's sense of belonging, as it is man's success in adapting to his environment that enables humanity to communicate and continue. Purpose of the study ▪ Determining the features and characteristics of vernacular architecture by analyzing an architectural example of an Egyptian village with a vernacular architectural character ▪ Study the extent to which vernacular architecture is compatible with the environment as an aspect of the natural aspects and the human aspect such as customs, traditions and religion ▪ Emphasize the importance of preserving vernacular housing as it is considered a local heritage ▪ Take advantage of the Vernacular architecture method in dealing with humans and the environment in designing our modern architecture and using technology

Intellectual property protection via copyright in architecture has been a matter of much controversy. This stemmed from the complex nature of the architectural creative process and its often long duration. Here, there were accusations of the means and scope of copyright protection of architectural designs being insufficiently precise, especially with respect to the inalienability of the author–work link and the lack of economic balance between the designer and the client. The subject of the unintentional infringement on another’s intellectual property in architecture in the context of plagiarism itself.

Resumen
In architecture, Venustas (aesthetics) is always considered an important attribute along with Firmitas (firmness) and Utilitas (usefulness). Pursuing aesthetics/ beauty is one of the architect’s primary roles. However, it is critical to comprehend ‘What is aesthetics?’ and its implications for the built-unbuilt environment and human beings. In a world where everything is changing, are the definitions, concepts, and parameters of aesthetics consistent? Is it subject to change over time? If so, should architectural students and professionals be aware of it and trained in it? This study aims to critically assess and analyse the dynamic aspects of aesthetics from 3300 BCE to present and establish the ‘best fit’ definition of aesthetics in architecture. The methodology used for the study is a mixed-method approach, a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature to investigate the origin of aesthetics and aesthetics in philosophy, environmental psychology and architecture. The aspects, criteria and sub-criteria identified from the analysis. The consensus is taken from expert interviews and a questionnaire survey (n=72). Findings reveal that aesthetics in architecture is dynamic/ ever-changing. It has nine contributing aspects that make aesthetics a performing aesthetics that emphasises the enhanced worth and value for money invested. These nine aspects are spatial organisation, functional efficiency, social, psychological, environmental, maintenance, sustainability, technology, and economics.

Resumen
Sustainability is the development concept that meets condition of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own requirements on social, environmental and economical aspect. Ecological architecture is the concept of sustainable development emphasizes on environmental aspect that emphasize harmony between the built environment and the natural conditions in the surrounding areas such as waste and recycling, energy efficiency, water resource, building design, carbon emission, and aims to eliminate negative environmental impact while continuing to be completely sustainable. The university campus is one of the buildings used by the public. In keeping with his character university campus used by many people that require large energy consumption. So that was included in the building that need to be controlled levels of energy consumption. The campus building should consider harmony with the natural conditions around the building. Therefore, it is necessary to have a study that evaluates the application of ecological architecture concept in university campus in Indonesia. This study is a comparative study conducted descriptive methods related to the characteristics of the application of the ecological architecture concept in the design of university campus in Indonesia. This study takes a case study three university campuses in Indonesia which is included in the green campus in Indonesia. With this paper is expected to provide a general description of the application of the ecological architecture concept in the university campus design in Indonesia. The conclusion from this study that the university campus in Indonesia have applied the concept of ecological architecture in several aspects. There are some similarities and differences in the application of some aspects. Recommendations from this study is that a university campus building design should be able to optimize the application of the concept of ecological architecture on all aspects of the design.

Groat, Linda N. "Psychological aspects of contextual compatibility in architecture : a study of environmental meaning". Thesis, University of Surrey, 1985. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/847475/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The intent of this study is to investigate contextual compatibility in architecture from a psychological perspective. More specifically, the study examines contextual compatibility as an aspect of environmental meaning. Within the framework of this research, the term contextual compatibility is defined as the degree of fit between a new infill building and the immediately adjacent buildings within an urban or campus setting. As such, contextual compatibility is clearly a very specific and narrowly defined phenomenon: yet it nevertheless represents one of the most publicly debated and architecturaly significant manifestations of environmental meaning. For example, the emergence of increasing numbers of design review commissions, the often vociferous public debates on the appropriateness of particular design proposals, and the increasing willingness of architects to employ non-Modernist vocabularies all suggest the importance of contextual compatibility in people's experience of architecture. Because this study represents one of the first empirical investigations of contextual compatibility at the architectural scale, the research is focused on three of the most fundamental aspects of the topics: 1) what meaning does contextual compatibility have for people? 2) what kind of contextual design strategies are most consistently preferred? and 3) what types of physical features are most commonly seen as contributing to or detracting from contextual compatibility? In addition, a further goal of the research is to offer an account of the psychological processes that are implicit in these questions. These questions are considered in the light of three major sets of literatures 1) general discussions of environmental cognition and meaning in the psychological literature, 2) specific substantive research studies on contextual compatibility, primarily drawn from the environmental psychology literature, and 3) critical and theoretical analyses of design strategies for contextual fit, drawn from the architectural literature.

Resumen
Many decision-making situations today affect the safety of individuals and the environment, for instance hazardous waste management. In practice, many of these decisions are madewithout an overall view and with the focus on either the environment or safety. Now and then the areas of regulation are in conflict, i.e. the best alternative according to environmental considerations is not always the safest way and vice versa.A tool for taking an overall view within the areas of safety and environment would simplify matters and provide authorities and industry with a better basis for their work. This thesis forms part of a project which aims to develop a framework tool giving this overall view and supporting decision-making in which the issues (areas) of environment, safety, ethics and costs are all integrated. By developing a framework tool, different areas of interest could be taken into consideration more easily when a decision is to be made and could also help develop legislation and policy locally (at an industry or company), nationally and internationally. The project also aims to provide knowledge about different destruction/decommission methods, their good and bad points and their consequences, in order to provide different actors with a better basis for decision-making. This thesis focuses on development of the framework. The scope of the studies was restricted to environment, ethics and personnel safety due to the extent of the work and time limitations. In the next part of the project, the areas of costs and evaluation will be studied and a first draft of the framework tool will be presented. In order to develop the framework tool, two case studies were carried out here: an environmental analysis involving a life cycle assessment and an ethical analysis. With the help of these analyses, three different methods of destruction of ammunition were compared: Open detonation, modelled both with and without recovery and recycling of metals; incineration in a static kiln with air pollution control combined with recycling of metals, modelled with two different levels of air emissions; and a combination of incineration with air pollution control, open burning, recovery of some energetic material and recycling of metals, giving a total of five options. Every method of destruction of energetic material, i.e. explosive waste or ammunition, results in environmental impacts in both the short and long term. These environmental impacts have direct or indirect impacts on safety, quality of life, the economy, etc., now and in the future, locally and globally. Life cycle assessment revealed two factors of importance for reducing the environmental impacts: Recycling the metals and air pollution control. As a consequence of controlling these potential negative environmental impacts, safety problems might also be controlled. Ethical analysis revealed that future generations and people in foreign countries will be affected by the destruction of ammunition. When choosing a method for destruction of ammunition, this group (the general public) should thus be given special attention.

Resumen
The built environment contributes extensively to the overall environmental impact of society. An increasing number of tools have been developed worldwide for comprehensive environmental assessment and rating of buildings in order to make the building sector more sustainable. These tools are expected to drive and facilitate future environmental improvements and market transformation in the sector. This thesis explores different methodological aspects in tool development using experiences from two large Swedish projects, the EcoEffect and ByggaBo tools, which were developed with a high level of stakeholder participation in order to be of practical use in the building sector.   The methodological aspects explored and discussed here include an approach for systematic selection of assessment aspects (energy use, indoor air quality, etc.) in tools (Paper 3), and a systematic procedure for selecting practical indicators using theoretical (e.g. validity/environmental relevance) and practical (e.g. costs) criteria (Papers 2 and 3). An approach for simple communication of complex results is presented with examples from 26 multi-family buildings (Paper 4). This approach allows a building’s ‘environmental efficiency’ to be presented in one diagram, without weighting the two distinct assessment areas energy use and indoor environmental quality. Paper 5 discusses the contextual issue of internal use of environmental indicators in property management organisations through reviews of environmental performance evaluation and organisation theory literature and comparisons with actual case studies. The EcoEffect (Paper 1) and the ByggaBo tools are also compared and summarised.   The case studies of real buildings and experiences from the EcoEffect and ByggaBo projects allowed data collection, calculation procedures and different practical applications of such tools to be evaluated. Poor data availability sometimes limits assessments, and improved internal routines and database developments in the building sector would allow more reliable environmental assessments.   Reviews of numerous indicators in Paper 3 (and 2) and literature revealed that environmental relevance was not a key aspect when current environmental performance indicators and building rating tools were constructed. This thesis suggests that environmental relevance and systematic procedures be prioritised in order to provide robust and trustworthy tools for environmental assessment of buildings.  Recommendations, some of which are generally applicable to other environmental assessments, include selection of environmentally relevant indicators, systematic procedures for handling theoretical and practical considerations in tool development, aggregation and weighting methods, use of a life cycle perspective and inclusion of performance-based rather than feature-based indicators. Since it is likely that the information these tools provide will increasingly be used by authorities, building users, economic incentive providers such as banks, etc., the methodological developments suggested here to strengthen tool rigour are important for future tool development processes.

AbstractSeveral analyses and reports on sustainable design are pointing worldwide in the direction of what is known as the ‘Green Building’ approach: an integrated, multi-sectoral approach to the implementation of improvements that aim to increase levels of well-being, social inclusion and long-lasting development in cities, on the basis of most urgent aspects of environmental quality, efficiency and circularity of resources, in a climate change scenario. In Italy, in 2017, the ‘Future City Manifesto’ was launched as part of the initiatives of the Italian General States of the Green Economy in Architecture, aiming at mainstreaming the Green Building approach within the international Green City Network. The objective of this chapter is to present and discuss recent initiatives in the field of sustainable architecture and green economy in Italy, pointing at innovative processes, strategies, methods and tools in a Green Building approach, suitable to activate policy actions and foster significant results as regards future green growth and urban development.

Resumen
AbstractIn these historic times, when there is a crucial shift in the way we consider the cultural and architectural aspects of learning spaces, it is important to investigate the role this spatial resource plays in the urban context. This, so we can understand the need to break with the outdated ideas about school that are deeply rooted in our society. There is common ground between architecture and pedagogy, a possible dialogue between space and knowledge, which can generate new explorations into the ordinary meaning of educational spaces and landscapes of knowledge, as a chance to expand the concept of inhabiting a space and how that impacts the world, and to devise a new urban condition. By first considering cities as a broad, extended learning space, we provide a chance and an incentive to reflect on the role of spatial design. The city is an important educational tool, since it represents a space of discovery, growth, socialization, tension, conflict and adventure. It is also where autonomy, adaptive intelligence and relational skills are developed. A new relationship between school and the city defines the future of learning and civilized co-existence.

Resumen
AbstractIn this chapter, we show what and how space syntax has contributed to theoriesand general knowledge of the built environment. First, we provide an introduction to two established researchtraditions, positivismand hermeneutics. The aim is to demonstrate through modal logic what the possibilities and limitations are for gaining general understandings and making theoretical explanations from space syntax research. Modal logic uses expressions to test the explanatory power of statements. Second, we show what space syntax adds to the debate about spatialintegrationand spatial segregation as seen in relation to market and socialrationality. We will focus on the spatial aspects and discuss these in relation to declining versus vital neighbourhoods, crime, anti-socialbehaviour, cultures, political ideologies, gender, and the use of space. Third, we give some reflections on what space syntax has contributed in regards to a comprehensive architecture theory. Finally, at the end, we add as an epilogue a thought experiment on how space syntax theories can be applied within the compact city debate. Exercises are provided at the end of this chapter.

Resumen
AbstractThe precise simulation of the human brain requires coupling different models in order to cover the different physiological and functional aspects of this extremely complex organ. Each of this brain models is implemented following specific mathematical and programming approaches, potentially leading to diverging computational behaviour and requirements. Such situation is the typical use case that can benefit from the Modular Supercomputing Architecture (MSA), which organizes heterogeneous computing resources at system level. This architecture and its corresponding software environment enable to run each part of an application or a workflow on the best suited hardware. This paper presents the MSA concept covering current hardware and software implementations, and describes how the neuroscientific workflow resulting of coupling the codes NEST and Arbor is being prepared to exploit the MSA.

Resumen
AbstractAccording to the World Urbanization Prospects of the United Nations (United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs 2018), about 68% of the overall expected world population is going to live in urban areas and cities by the year 2050. The task of transforming modern cities towards a more sustainable and ecological as well as socially likeable environment touches a plethora of disciplines like transportation, energy infrastructure, architecture, building physics, etc. and poses an intricate challenge for architects, engineers, urban planners and social scientist alike. Thanks to the technological evolution, the realization of smart city concepts and solutions has become a viable option to contribute to this goal in a significant manner. The building envelope as an indispensable part of human dwellings and working space has historically mostly taken the classic functionalities of resembling aesthetic expression and providing physical protection. Recent and upcoming technological developments will enable a shift in the role of the building envelope from its mere classical functionalities towards additional contributions to the sustainability and livability of the environment. The prospects of these contributions range from increasing the thermal and visual comfort of the inhabitants and the surrounding environment by adaptive architectural measures towards potential energy saving by energy harvesting devices and synergetic processing and treatment of material flows of the building to provide conditioned air, preprocessed water and even food. In this short essay, we will elaborate on the phenomenon of smart city in general and the role of the building envelope in the context of modern smart city development and its potential on the improvement on different aspects of life and urban environment.

Resumen
There is a need for products that can automatically adapt to various environmental and working conditions. Since a standard theoretical framework for designing such adaptable products is not yet established, only few rules, generalized methods, software tools, and guidelines for design for adaptability can be found in literature. The goal of this paper is to address issues associated with designing adaptable product architecture and to propose a first step to develop methods and tools to deal with these issues. The paper first gives various definitions and an overview of product adaptability. Then it discusses adaptable product architectures, external conditions, and customer needs that are crucial aspects in designing adaptable products. The research proposes a scheme of an adaptable product that can constitute part of a formalized design method for adaptability. Finally, it illustrates the design choices that should be made to arrive at an adaptable product architecture.

Resumen
3D survey and advanced modeling in the study of the Forts of Rome: the Forte Monte AntenneIn the studies the authors are conducting on the entrenched camp of Rome, 3D surveys and digital models are used as means to understand constructions with the aim of developing restoration and re-utilization projects. For Forte Monte Antenne (1882-1891), the authors have carried out systematic studies of the formal and structural aspects. The data acquired from a direct survey and with laser scanner, drone and photogrammetry, integrated with data obtained from iconographic and bibliographic sources, were integrated in the creation of a digital model, which made the classification of the various elements in a structured database possible, including the verification of the relationship among the parts at varying levels, and the system of aeration ducts. Convective motions and the thermo-hygrometric and visual comfort within some of the environments, as well as thermographic surveys of the walls were conducted. The BIM model was integrated, therefore, with a MEP model. The hypothesis of restoration and possible adaptation to new functions cannot disregard the analysis of those parameters which complete the picture of environmental quality and thus of the effective potentials in repurposing of the structure.

Resumen
In recent years, machine learning (ML) has received significant attention in the field of architectural design. This paper proposes a methodology for integrating ML with computational design to generate building massing based on environment, in this way, gives an outlook on the application of ML in architecture. In the early stages of building design, a great deal of effort is often spent on specifying and designing building massing. In this process, the assessment of the building wind performance plays an important role. Compared to professional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, plug-ins based on rhino and grasshopper, such like Butterfly and Eddy3D, can well integrated into computational design process. But even then, these plug-ins are still limited because a lot of computing power and time are required to run the program. This article provides an overview of a generative framework embedded with a ML approach to apply CFD in building design, finally results on a building massing with a balanced wind environment at the early stage of architectural design. This framework innovates the existing CFD simulation in following aspects: 1) ML-based simulation is timesaving, 2) this advantage allows the use of exhaustive enumeration to obtain the optimal solution, 3) this framework provides a good interface with computational design process with images as a medium, 4) therefore it is more flexible and operational. This framework aims to provide an approach to achieve faster and better massing design. To reach this objective, there are three main steps: 1) firstly, a generative adversarial network (GAN) model is trained to get wind simulation results from the input site, 2) then, the possible boundaries of massing in different height are generated for exhaustive enumeration, 3) afterwards, run again the GAN wind simulation for the possible boundaries, 4) and finally an assessment method is put forward to obtain the ideal result for the site.

Resumen
Abstract Modular product architecture design allows product variants to be derived with little effort and cost. An essential part of designing modular product architectures is fulfilling customer-relevant product features, which represent the differentiating aspects for the customer and, thus, stand for the economic success of a product variant. However, product features are not only subject to high fluctuations due to changing environmental influences, but are also of varying relevance to customers over time. Not considering these aspects in the development phase can lead to costly changes in the product architecture later on. To counteract this, these two perspectives are merged and a methodical approach is introduced that identifies new product features and analyses their future development in the context of customer benefit. For this purpose, the current and future relevance to customers as well as uncertainties are calculated using Adaptive Conjoint Analysis and a Monte Carlo simulation. The results are consolidated in a visualization and the product features are classified according to their future implementation in robust product architecture. The procedure is explained using the example of a product family of vacuum cleaning robots.

Resumen
Following the 2000 European Landscape Convention, a new act strengthening landscape protection instruments has been in force since 2015. It sets forth legal aspects of landscape shaping (Dziennik Ustaw 2015, poz. 774) and introduces landscape audits at the province level. A landscape audit consists in identification and characterization of selected landscapes, assessment of their value, selection of so-called priority landscapes and identification of threats for preservation of their value. An audit complies with GIS standards. Analyses use source materials, i.e. digital maps of physical-geographical mesoregions, current topographic maps of digital resources of cartographic databases, latest orthophotomaps and DTMs, maps of potential vegetation, geobotanic regionalization, historic-cultural regionalization and natural landscape types, documentation of historical and cultural values and related complementary resources. A special new methodology (Solon et al. 2014), developed for auditing, was tested in 2015 in an urban area (Myga-Piatek et al. 2015). Landscapes are characterized by determining their analytic (natural and cultural) and synthetic features, with particular focus on the stage of delimitation and identification of landscape units in urban areas. Czestochowa was selected as a case study due to its large natural (karst landscapes of the Czestochowa Upland, numerous forests, nature reserves) and cultural (Saint Mary’s Sanctuary, unique urban architecture) potential. Czestochowa is also a city of former iron ore and mineral resources exploitation, still active industry, dynamic urban sprawl within former farming areas, and dynamically growing tourism. Landscape delimitation and identification distinguished 75 landscape units basing on uniform landscape background (uniform cover and use of the land). Landscape assessment used a new assessment method for anthropogenic transformation of landscape – the indicator describing the correlation between the mean shape index (MSI) and the Shannon diversity index (SHDI) (Pukowiec-Kurda, Sobala 2016). Particular threats and planning suggestions, useful in development of urban areas, were presented for selected priority landscapes.

Resumen
One of the most challenging aspects of buildings at present times is the process of merging thermal with environmental qualities in architecture. Therefore, to execute this process, it is necessary to have healthy and sustainable design strategies. One of the main problems in this joint strategy is providing efficiency, quality, and aesthetics within the buildings. Raising the question of this topic in the public buildings makes this issue even more complex and more emblematic. Before delivering a certain indoor quality of the structures, there is a tremendous necessity of proposing sustainable and efficient design approaches. Accordingly, in this text, wood buildings are taken into account. This research integrates sustainability and thermal aspects of public building design such as libraries. For that reason, the application of the results may find a place between various design methodologies to indicate thermal qualities.

Resumen
Architecture since the beginning of time have been developed and shaped according to many aspects such as environmental factors, material availability, construction knowledge, religion, economy, and political decisions. In the current century, with the globalized building materials and increased awareness in architecture construction methods, architecture has hundreds of different ways to be constructed and developed. On the other hand, architecture is being formed and affected mainly due to economic factors, and political decisions. Bekaa Valley, a region in Lebanon could be a spectacular political event. The former is a region famous for its agricultural lands formed by million years of sediment clustering from rich Lebanese mountains bounding the area from the east and the west. In the specific eastern area of Beka'a valley studied - Nabisheith to Douris- is full of farming lands, used by locals and nomads to grow variables of vegetables, fruits, and wheat. A political decision developed by the local minister, to build houses by underdeveloped permits, changed the typology of a landscape created more than 2500 years ago. The architectural typology also changed to the new kind of architecture, which is indifferent to the local knowledge of construction learned and developed by locals. Local knowledge developed and adapted to harshness of weather by local materials replaced by globalized materials and abrupt political decisions.
