The present study examines the cycling of elements in the biosphere. The first chapter proposes a theoretical framework for this cycling based on both metal/ligand theory and mass balance studies. Empirical modelling serves as an alternative and complement to mass balance studies in predicting the export of elements from watersheds. Watershed output (export per unit area per unit of time) is predicted using atmospheric deposition rates, an element bonding strength index, the watershed area and a forest classification (deciduous vs coniferous). However, the mass balance between global BC generation and accumulation does not match, suggesting a removal mechanism of BC to the active carbon pool, most probable in a dissolved form. Resumen
A study of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in two species of fish; the Swan River goby (Pseudogobius olorum) and the mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) was undertaken at wetlands in Perth, Western Australia. Although significant levels of FA were recorded, no clear relationships between FA and the concentrations of pollutants were found. Physicochemical stress, ecological stress and genetic factors were hypothesized to be causative factors of the FA detected. A laboratory investigation based on the experimental effects of temperature, conductivity and food availability on G. holbrooki collected
