Texto completoThis research focuses on the history of Jewish institutions involved in archaeology established in Jerusalem between 1910 and 1925 in the context of the scientific exploration of Palestine. They are thoroughly examined through their actors, archaeological endeavors and the various networks that supported them. In order to better appreciate their approach to and practice of archaeology, the research also examines these institutions within the parameters of the administration and laws on antiquities established and issued by the successive Ottoman and British authorities in Palestine.This allows us to gauge the contribution these institutions made to the development of archaeology as practiced between 1948-1967 in Israel. This first part of our research enables us to examine the socio-political and cultural roles of archaeology such as its influence on the creation of a Jewish national identity and culture and its role in shaping Palestine as homeland within the context of Zionism. Because these institutions played myriad roles in the intertwining of archaeology with Zionist ambitions and projects; they facilitated the strengthening of its socio-political and cultural roles and influences between 1948 and 1967 in Israel. To this end, the research examines different means that have been employed to transmit and promote archaeology to the general public. This finally allows us to measure how archaeology became what is known as an Israeli “national hobby” over the 1950-1960’s

Texto completoJewish ossuaries were used at the end of the 2nd Temple period, mainly in the area of the city of Jerusalem. The first part of this thesis is an attempt to present, for the first time, all published ossuaries to this day in only one corpus, giving all known details about them and facsimiles of most of the inscriptions. The second part deals with various aspects of jewish ossuaries. Its first chapter deals with general characteristics of the ossuaries. Afterwards the inscriptions written on various sides of some of the ossuaries are discussed with an enhanced epigraphic research on 53 inscriptions. The following chapter is about ornamentation, its motives, some special ossuaries regarding this aspect, and various interpretations that can be given to ossuaries' ornamentation. The last chapter is a review of the major interpretations of the possible link of the use of ossuaries with jewish religious conceptions of that time. There's also an exposition of what may have been the origins of the use of ossuaries at that period in that area. This can be corroborated by all the elements unearthed is the previous parts of the thesis

Texto completoThe motif of the crown, strongly present in the Jewish and Christian iconographic corpus, was mainly perceived as a pagan contamination of the said repertoires. By the same token, its symbolic interpretation is considered secondary and its use essentially decorative. By the constitution of a selective double corpus, one iconographic and the other textual, we demonstrate that this motif knows a deep symbolic meaning specific to both religions. My work makes it possible, on the one hand, to better understand the iconographic and religious evolutions so characteristic of late antiquity, and, on the other hand, to identify the interactions between the Jewish and Christian religious groups of the Greco-Roman world.Indeed, taking into account and confronting all Jewish and Christian late antique textual and iconographic sources initially showed that the theme of the crown is omnipresent. This omnipresence is explained insofar as the symbolic meanings which it conveys are fundamental and multiple. Attribute of power (that of the king that of the priest), attribute and divine seal, attribute Christic, angelic and celestial, the crown is at the heart of the Jewish and Christian thought of retribution.This powerful symbolism is rooted in the Bible. It is from the biblical passages, however few in number, mentioning the crown, that the subsequent exegeses have been constantly developed; With an increasing emphasis on the heavenly dimension of the meaning of this motif, to the detriment of its terrestrial connotations historically related to the Davidic kingdom and the Aaronic priesthood. The motif of the crown and its increasingly eschatological interpretation are present in all the literary or epigraphic corpuses that we have studied. The first witnesses to this increase in the symbolic value of the crown are the intertestamental, pseudepigraphic and qumranian literatures at the turn of our era, in which attention focuses on the fate of the righteous

Texto completoThe research aims to reconsider and analyze the situation of the archaeological site of San Pasquale of Bova Marina (RC). The site, discovered in 1983, was the subject of archaeological investigations since 1985 and brought to light structures of great importance, among which is a building identified as a Jewish synagogue and dated to the fourth century of our era. Along with the Jewish structure, were brought to light other buildings and two burial areas. Until now, the life of the synagogue had been dated from the fourth to the sixth century of our era and burial areas were put in phase with it. Through this research, carried out on documents and through a series of archaeological excavations, we have shown that the life of the synagogue does not go beyond the middle of the fifth century and the two cemeteries are not connected to it. We also reconstruct more accurately the various phases of Jewish building life and their development. Fundamental point were the three-dimensional reconstructions of the mosaic floor of the classroom and of the hall of the prayer. We also found profound differences with the other synagogue discovered in Italy, at Ostia, while we found important points of contact with the synagogues of the Land of Israel, in particular those of the valley of Beth She'an. The site of S. Pasquale of Bova marina, then, saw a Jewish attendance from the fourth century to the middle of the fifth when the area continued to be used primarily as a burial area and then stop any type of attendance in the seventh century, as other sites places on the Ionian coast of Calabria

Texto completoThe imperial constitutions of the IVth and Vth centuries relating to the Jews are for the most part regarded as theologically motivated. We propose to show that these laws were born out of a contentious judicial context which was not subjugated to a univocal ideological line. Petitioned in its judicial capacity, the chancellery had to motivate its decisions by objective legal standards. Other considerations weighted on the decision making process : financial and fiscal factors, the necessities of evergetism, as well as political and sometimes diplomatic calculations. The personalities of those who contributed to the creation of the law can not be discarded either. While the law of the Early Middle Ages was primarily the work of clerics, it did not obey to a strictly theological view, as these men of the Church were at the same time political actors. Their work was that of compromise under the nature of their relations with the secular power and with the Jews

It's starting with the history of the several localisations of the supposed tombs of the judean kings of the first temple period, and then with a new analysis and commentary of biblical indications. In a second part, the judean kings of the second temple period are studied in the context of the tombs of the kings in the classical Antiquity, before focus on the Asmonean's and Herodian's tombs, especially the Maccabean monument, the Herodion and the monument of Herod in Jerusalem. Finally, the study show that the tombs of the kings always had a strong symbolism in literature and architecture, and this symbolism can explain a lot more that it usually believed

Texto completoThe roman cities of Asia Minor are surrounded by vast necropolises, amongst which funerary complexes are mostoften plundered. While monuments and inscriptions have been studied in great detail in the past, the depositional context andfunerary treatment of the dead and the management of collective burials have not been submitted to detailed analysis. Thediscovery of Tomb 163d, a subterranean funerary chamber not plundered in the North Necropolis of Hierapolis (ancientprovince of Phrygia, in the South-West of Turkey) provided a unique opportunity to apply archeo-anthropological analysis inorder to understand funerary treatment and burial practices. This study reinvestigated the excavations which took place in2003, to complement another four campaigns (2010-2013). For these excavation campaigns a specific intervention strategywas developed as part of the Archeological Italian Mission of Hierapolis. After discussing the chronological framework, thisstudy analyses funerary treatment (modes of inhumation, body treatment, depositional context) as well as the burialmanagement to the management within the dynamic of the funeral space. The stratigraphic analysis demonstrated that thegrave was utilized from the Augustan period to the 7th century and contained 293 individuals. During the 3rd century, a Jewishfamily rebought the tomb for further use, as indicated by the inscriptions engraved on the monument. The taphonomic study ofthe articulated skeletons revealed that the majority of the deceased were buried in wooden coffins. It appeared that the Jewishfamily left some skeletal remains from the first occupiers in situ, in accordance with the Roman law defining the sepulchrum asa locus religious. However, the management of human remains was more related to practical considerations, linked to thevolume of the remains, than to the concern of respecting the deceased. By analyzing and interpreting the organization offuneral spaces, the conclusions of this study provide new evidence on relationships between different religious groups living inHierapolis, and on aspects of burial practices during Roman Antiquity and Proto-Byzantine period

Texto completoThis study investigates the Christian conceptualization of authority and its political contexts by focusing on a rather common but never systematically analyzed rhetorical strategy in the texts of the 4th and 5th centuries: the associations between the Roman Emperor and the symbol of the cross. At the interface between the Emperor and the cross stands another authority, personal or collective, who is considered a mediator. Concrete or symbolic associations between at least two parties usually form themselves under a common goal: the glorious kingdom of Emperor, Christ, and their mediators. In this case, the cross is solicited in its profuse meaning as a powerful and dynamic sign, both iconic and theological; it is thus integrated in a specific setting of time and place or in a metaphorical and allegorical discourse. The goal of this study is to look at the different proponents of a mediating authority, whether secular or ecclesiastical, and their claims for visibility, political basis and public recognition. The manifold associations between the Emperor and the cross are part of a vibrant discourse, which is both partisan and conquering in reclaiming a specific Christian authority; and whoever is able to manipulate the power of the cross gains prophetic qualities that also legitimize political participation. Thus, the capacity to act as a mediator builds upon competition between intermediaries or upon the appropriation of this capacity by legal means, but not upon conflict with the Imperial authority. In associating the Emperor and the cross in the texts, the authors describe interactions and networks of contacts. Rather than breathless and “standardized” processes, these networks reveal the multiple and polymorphic dynamics of political relationships in Late Antiquity
