Resumen
The core values of China’s famed <em>wuxia </em>(heroic fiction) literature and cinema developed in response to the chaos and warfare of the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.E.). In English, probably the best commercial source of information on this topic is Professor James J.Y. Liu’s book, <em>The Chinese Knight-Errant</em> (1967), which unfortunately is out of print. This article is based on that book, along with the author’s academic and literary work on the East Asian hero. These heroic values appear to be rooted in individualism, which would seem to contradict the region’s vaunted sense of group cohesiveness.

Resumen
The paper intends to reread Jamaica Kincaid’s short story, ‘Girl’ (1978) and provide new insights into its understanding. It aims to analyse the poetic qualities, word choice, and structure of the text that are left not fully discussed by recent scholarship. The structure as well as the poetic language of ‘Girl’ make it an unconventional piece of writing falling between two literary categories and so hard to classify. ‘Girl’ apparently violates rules and transgresses conventions by being both poetic and going beyond the traditional fictional structure of a short story. The paper argues that ‘Girl’ is an unconventional piece of literature that crosses the borders of a short story to poetry. First, it obviously lacks the traditional structure to be classified as a short story. Second, the text embraces several poetic techniques which reveal it as poetry written in prose. Therefore, the paper purports to carefully consider the poetic techniques and rhetorical devices found in ‘Girl’ and make it much closer to a prose poem than a short story. The story depicts a pre-adolescent female being dictated by the instructions of a sharp-tongued mother who teaches her how to become a lady- both in the private setting of the house as well as in public- in contrast to what it is like for a woman growing up in Antigua. The paper’s considerations of Kincaid’s depictions of mother, daughter, and their relationship illuminate the poetic traits found including repetition, sound devices and word choice. The paper’s interpretation of ‘Girl’ reveals its poetic nature for being thoroughly repetitive and alliterative piece. The text’s repetitive quality does not only stimulate the reader’s intellectual appreciation of the text’s thematic notions and meanings but also promotes an overall unifying effect.

Resumen
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-G is a nonclassical MHC class I molecule with modulatory effects on NK and T cells. Unlike classical HLA class I molecules, HLA-G has seven isoforms, three of which are soluble. Soluble HLA-G molecules are reportedly able to transduce negative signals to immune cells after interacting with their corresponding receptors. The expression of these molecules plays significant roles in maternal tolerance against semi-allogenic fetuses. Overexpression of HLA-G in tumors and increased serum levels of soluble HLA-G have been reported in different malignancies, and these changes may be involved in tumoral immune evasion and cancer progression. To improve immune responses against tumor cells, the downmodulation of HLA-G by siRNA or blocking monoclonal antibodies can be helpful in cancer immunotherapy. Additionally, HLA-G can be considered a potential biomarker for the diagnosis and/or prognosis of certain cancers. Although polymorphism of the HLA-G gene-coding region is more limited than in classical HLA class I, some genetic variations in regulatory regions of the gene control the expression level of this molecule. Furthermore, epigenetic factors such as infections may affect the expression of HLA-G in infection-related cancers.

Resumen
The Bacille Calmette-Guérin or BCG vaccine, the only vaccine available against Mycobacterium tuberculosis can induce a marked Th1 polarization of T-cells, characterized by the antigen-specific secretion of IFN-γ and enhanced antiviral response. A number of studies have supported the concept of protection by non-specific boosting of immunity by BCG and other microbes. BCG is a well-known example of a trained immunity inducer since it imparts ‘non-specific heterologous’ immunity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for the recent pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 continues to inflict an unabated surge in morbidity and mortality around the world. There is an urgent need to devise and develop alternate strategies to bolster host immunity against the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) and its continuously emerging variants. Several vaccines have been developed recently against COVID-19, but the data on their protective efficacy remains doubtful. Therefore, urgent strategies are required to enhance system immunity to adequately defend against newly emerging infections. The concept of trained immunity may play a cardinal role in protection against COVID-19. The ability of trained immunity-based vaccines is to promote heterologous immune responses beyond their specific antigens, which may notably help in defending against an emergency situation such as COVID-19 when the protective ability of vaccines is suspicious. A growing body of evidence points towards the beneficial non-specific boosting of immune responses by BCG or other microbes, which may protect against COVID-19. Clinical trials are underway to consider the efficacy of BCG vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 on healthcare workers and the elderly population. In this review, we will discuss the role of BCG in eliciting trained immunity and the possible limitations and challenges in controlling COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Faced with the apparent inconsistency of the notion of irony, this PhD does not suggest to enhance the impossibility of defining the notion or its proteism, but to build a definition on alternative principles: the focus on common features instead of variations, on long term processes instead of the succession of meanings and the definition of irony as an act of communication rather than as a formal mechanic. Irony, ever since the Greek world, appears as an act of communication which cannot be reduced to pragmatic linguistics: how to control socialisation in a dangerous context, in staying as close to the enemy as possible? Solving this problem by exchanging supposes the invention of forms, some of which – first and foremost the antiphrasis – get autonomous and are fixed forms – but among others – of the irony. I then strive to follow the way in with this non formal definition is maintained by paying attention – until Jena romanticism – to the analysis of the communication at work in the reflexions on irony. André Gide’s fictional work displaying a great variety of forms of irony and being imbued with secret, both biographical and sexual, is read as questioning this control of dangerous socialisation and as laying out, beneath the notion of collaboration, a reflexion on literary communication. On the other hand André Gide’s work is reinterpreted in the perspective of a history of irony in the nineteenth century. The antiphrasis is the centre of perception of irony: to the figure of Voltaire is attached to the idea of taunting the ideal, which constitutes a semantic weight conditioning the adaptation of different ironic traditions to the French framework

Rhetoric of Condemnation in the 'Historia Augusta' intends to study the collection of imperial biographies known as Historia Augusta as a literary object. The biographies were officially written by six authors at the end of the 3rd Century A.D. and at the beginning of the 4th Century A.D., but they were actually produced through the imagination of a single writer who lived at the end of the 4th Century A.D. according to the 19th Century thesis of the German historian Hermann Dessau. Through analysing a text that intricately mixes reality and fiction, this thesis will examine the different strategies intended to depict the sombre images of both legitimate and usurping emperors throughout the historical period that begins with Hadrian's reign and ends with the fall of Carin (2nd to 3rd Centuries A.D.). Observing the lexical, stylistic, thematic and structural methods reveals the importance of utilizing epideictic rhetoric as well as numerous intertextuality phenomena, particularly based on Suetonius's Vitae XII Caesarum, which is the main model of the collection. This inquiry drives to widen the thought interested by the target of the critic. If, behind the figures of bad princes, the writer tries to castigate the principate system that enables princely transgressions, he also tries to enhance his own writing. The writer tries to be different from other historiographers in a style that grants a large place to fantasy, self-mockery and raillery. This thesis endeavours, therefore, to study the representation of historical characters and events while underlining articulations between poetics and rhetoric in a major text of late Antiquity Latin literature

Abstract: when Fenelon decided to write a literary mirror for princes to instruct Louis XIV's grandson in the arts of governing, he did not imagine that his text would cause a stir, or that it would produce such a vast and multifaceted critical fortune. Apart from the readings of characters which amused the audience that would try to discover the actual figures behind the characters, one of the perennial problems for the interpretation of The Adventures of Telemachus is its classification. The book does not fit neatly into the ancient narrative, neither into the novel. Despite the moralizing and educational function of the text, the character Telemachus gains autonomy being the narrator of him in the first book. With this, we access an entirely new subjectivity in a text that was intended to be pedagogical. The exemplary feature of the Homeric epic that inspires the adventures is undermined by the traps created by the hero's own feelings while he deals with the difficult task of divesting himself. Moreover, the purpose of the text - to form a Christian king - connects it with the moralizing ancient narratives. The Adventures of Telemachus remains enrolled in a "time out of time" in which we see the transformations following each other, being impossible to place them on a timeline like we do in the novel. The discussion of utopia has thus renewed the discussion about the genre in these adventures. We argue that the presence of a "country of nowhere" in this pedagogical narrative organizes its structure and guides its mimetic procedures according to the spaces visitEditora Divided in two parts, this thesis seeks, at first, to describe Fénelon's literary text, Les aventures de Télémaque. In strictly literary terms, we deal with its narrative structure, organized around government's models and antimodels; its mythical-allegorical language that conveys a moral and spiritual Christian content; and its literary genre. Through a bibliographical review, we outline the reasons that made Telemachus' publication a scandal, and also the changes of meaning and modes of interpretation that the text has suffered over a 300 years old critical fortune. In the second part, we are dedicated to the analysis of Salento, the last kingdom visited by the main character, as a utopia that offers a return on time, so we affirm its conservative feature. Our proposed study takes into consideration that Fénelon's Telemachus consists not only of political and religious ideas, but also of a conflict between different conceptions of history

The aim of this thesis is the definition and study of the treatment of ekphrasis in fictional prose narrative in French between 1585 and 1660. Ekphrasis is considered here in its ancient and rhetorical sense of a discourse having the quality of enargeia – that is, one that places its object before the eyes of the reader/listener.Based on a rigorous philological investigation, this paper aims first at defining the rhetorical origin of the concept of ekphrasis, and its complex semantic mapping between Antiquity and the early modern period. This research attempts then to shed light on the attitude (docility or rebellion) of fictional ekphrasis toward the ancient and contemporary precepts, by highlighting the singularities of writing that distinguish the practice of novelists. Finally, this study focuses on identifying the effects that ekphrasis, and more generally the figures of enargeia – of which the sources highlight the close link with the passions – are expected to arouse in the reader

This research seeks to examine the presence of protagonist-narrators in old age and his performance in Brazilian fictional narratives published in the first decade of this century. The aim is to investigate the contemporary Brazilian fictional narrative that gives voice to the old people, allowing them to act as main character and narrator of the story, revealing their path, their aging and their gaze on society. To this end, we take as the main corpus the books Heranças, by Silviano Santiago, Leite Derramado, by Chico Buarque, Órfãos do Eldorado, by Milton Hatoum and O arroz de Palma, by Francisco Azevedo, whose subject is a kind of autobiography of the fictional character that, old and experienced, takes stock of his life, showing to the reader his history, while allowing a glimpse of certain passages of national history. It is intended to verify the similarities, approximations and differences that such works have among themselves as well as possible links with other narratives. It will also be examined the novel Milamor, by Livia Garcia-Roza, that, unlike others, brings a character-female narrator, in the process of becoming old. From the corpus of analysis, an attempt is made to ascertain to what extent the voice of the old is present, as well as issues related to aging, along with themes and facts concerning the historical development of the country and the inclusion ( or exclusion) of the old people in the current scenario. Despite the population growth of older individuals in Brazil and other parts of the world, your voice is heard not satisfactorily; still rules their silencing. The presence of different works bringing up old narrators, however, looks an indication of new prospects with regard to the understanding and representation of aging and old age.

The starting point of our thesis is the critical discussion of a concept taken for granted by literary and ancient philosophy scholars. This is the cynic-stoic diatribe, so named because cynical themes would coexist with Stoic ones. Our first step is assessing the accuracy of the widely accepted definition, which makes the connection between the diatribe and a tradition of topics relating to moral popular philosophy. Then we explain our choice to accept and to try to integrate recent scientific acknowledgments which accept the diatribe as a literary genre relating to the spiritual guidance method of the Socratic philosophical schools, with a particularly attentive focus on the relationship between master and disciple. Starting from this controversial genre of Greek origin, we analyze the transition to the Roman period, by first examining the terminological aspect and then the philosophical framing. Among the methods, defined as diatribic, we focus on the only feature which does not appear to be challenged and that for this exact reason could be the basis of the existence of the genre itself: dialogism and the presence of a fictitious interlocutor. We then focus our attention on Seneca's work, and particularly on Letters to Lucilius, where the attempt to create a master-disciple relationship is intensely visible, and in which the presence of a fictitious interlocutor is structurally related to the development of this relationship. Then we discuss the diatribic forms of Roman satire, to reach Lucilius', Horace's and Persius' cases. A brief presentation is finally devoted to the analysis of relations between the diatribe, the Second Sophistic and the religious preaching.

Resumen
Sue Thomas uses this chapter to explore recent academic and creative projects about Mary Prince that reframe and add complexity to her story. Prince, enslaved in Bermuda, Grand Turk Island, Antigua and London, is best remembered for her influential slave narrative, The History of Mary Prince, published in 1831 by Thomas Pringle, secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society. The text was a graphic exposé of the atrocities of slavery and brought about a libel case against Pringle by one of Prince’s former owners. Thomas looks at work about Prince including Margot Maddison-MacFadyen’s archival research used both in her PhD dissertation and her historical fiction novella for young readers; themes of other-mothering explored in the poetry of Joan Anim-Addo; a video installation by Joscelyn Gardner using a toy theatre set that reflects on performative aspects of history through Prince’s story; and work by Cynthia M. Kennedy and Michele Speitz which brings attention to the harsh conditions of slaves working in Caribbean salt ponds as described by Prince. Finally, Thomas explores Prince’s conversion to Moravianism and how her experience of slavery chafed against the religious philosophy of quietism.

Resumen
Abstract This chapter surveys the significant yet frequently overlooked body of poetic material from the fifteenth century that focuses on antique narratives. It considers them through their approach to their inherited narratives. This approach allows a unified and contextually sensitive comparison to be made across a diverse corpus, including alliterative poetry, Scots works, long retellings of classical narratives, and shorter comic episodes, and it also enables lengthy works to be succinctly analysed. Particular kinds of works discussed are the narratives of Alexander (The Wars of Alexander and The Buik of King Alexander the Conquerour), narratives of Troy (Gest hystoriale/Destruction of Troy, Laud Troy Book), accounts drawn from Ovid and Virgil (John Metham, Amoryus and Cleopes), Charlemagne histories (The Sowdon of Babylon), and tales influenced by Chaucer (the Tale of Beryn).

Resumen
Marriage of Martu refers to the mythological text originating from early second millennia BC from the ancient Middle East. The work is closely related to the so called Amorite migration from the west into the collapsing Sumerian civilisation. This phenomena was long considered to be the leading cause of the fall of Ur III dynasty and various other city states of the time. More recent studies point to economic exhaustion caused by protracted warfare and famine brought about by climate change and earth salinization as being greater contributing factors. The title refers to the titular deity, who was a fictional anthropomorphic personification of the recently arrived Amorite tribal people. This is proven by the fact that Amorites themselves never worshipped such an entity and Martu himself was integrated into the established pantheon as a legitimate deity only after the Amorite people were already integrated into Mesopotamian society. The text itself sees Martu competing in various fighting games organized in Inab in order to win the hand of Adjar-kidug, the daughter of the city’s patron deity. He is ultimately successful and wins over the trust of the people and his bride to be, despite presented accusations that reflected the then stereotypical view the older native people likely had of the recently arrived tribal population. The aim of this paper is to introduce the myth and then provide contextual analysis within the social and political context of its time. It also briefly introduces a new interpretation of it. Said interpretation posits that the aim of the text was to legitimise a new Amorite ruling dynasty, or at least make their rule seem more acceptable to the indigenous population by granting it divine blessing. This would have precedent in religious ceremonies and texts from the same time period, which saw various Amorite rulers trying to establish continuity with the previous dynasties. Such practices also included marriage with daughters of the defeated lineages. Further evidence of likely Amorite authorship of the text is its optimistic wording when contrasted to other texts from its era, such as Lamentation over the city of Ur.

The tourist cities intend to recreate the international imaginaries about certain cultures, adapting to the given expectations of the visiting place. The imaginaries are the social reality built by the citizens. Through them, people seize and explain their perceptions on others, on events and relationships, and as well as on objects. In the emerging cities of tourism, the building up of equipment, public as well as private, ignores the preexisting city. Cultural local experiences are left aside to prepare an optimal scenario that would make the place attractive for the foreign visitors. In this sense, the cultural references for “the Mexican” are captured trough architecture. They take elements from different regions and different historical momentums, according to the international imaginary. These architectural languages works as an authenticity reference for space, validating the tourist experience. The objective of this paper is to throw light on the origin of architectural forms –the morphogenesis- in an emerging tourist city. We will look at the urban and architectural languages, as well as the connexion that the exhibit designs keep towards the Mexican culture international imaginary. In order to do so, we will take advantage of the itineraries the tourists follow to get to the tourist developments, of the images exposed in specific places, and of the tourists account of their experiences. Our means of access will be the real images (taken by the author of this paper) and those collected in web sites of hotel chains and personal tourist journals (blogs). With these instruments we intend to associate the place plastic languages with those derived from international imaginaries on the Mexican culture. As an example we take into account to points of view: the real estate promoter’s and the tourist’s. The case of study is Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, a city that has suffered a tough switch to the tourist activities within the last ten years, and of which its real-estate growth represents an emblematic case in the Mexican northwest. Bringing forward a brief conclusion, it can be pointed out that the array of images and the port design achieve the paradoxical function settle themselves on the traveller’s memory (creating a memorable and singular city), and at the same time they authenticate the tourist experience. In other words, these images are consistent with the imaginary that the tourists have formed even before they began their tour. This recreation of the images is accessible through the stories of other travellers or trough the speech of realestate promoters (realties), both of which available with a single “clic”.On other side, the references seek by the tourist realties are attached to the antique Mexican architecture: the pre-Hispanic cultures, the haciendas and the colonial period, that have very few or nothing to do with the regional environment of Puerto Peñasco. However, that array allows the creation of an "ideal" environment, expected by the tourist to approach to the Mexican culture. Finally, contrasting the point of view of a traveller and a real-estate promoter, we will expose the desired city and the fictional city. In this way, we will approach to the "real city", which now seems the copy of the other two.
