Resumen
In Taiwan, even though we have sets of desks and chairs in different sizes for school children, due to the inconsistency of purchases and the number of students in the year, many students did not have the opportunity to use desks and chairs that fit their height. In such an environment, students have incorrect postures, cannot concentrate in class, and begin to neglect or even destroy the tables and chairs they use. In this project, I designed the furniture to be adjustable in height. It solves the inconvenience of school procurement and provides students with a more comfortable learning environment. Besides, I also introduced the concept of "Wood education" to cultivate students' understanding of Taiwan's native natural resources and develop the feeling of cherishing the furniture that students use from assembling their wooden furniture.

ABSTRACT: In the transition from society of the Third Industrial Revolution to the Society of Knowledge and Information, there is a need to understand the world better. From the society of tangible assets, reminiscent of the economy of material goods and industrial capitalism, one moves to the knowledge society, with the ambition of constructing a proper understanding of the world, which interprets phenomena promoting more responsible development. An investigation contributes to knowledge when it identifies a significant, entrepreneurial, operational and measurable problem in its objectives. It must also foresee sustainable growth and transformation over time and recognize creative possibilities to achieve goals with lower expenditure and higher income. These attributes are thought together and interconnected, aiming at results capable of dialogue and negotiation with the real. These operations apply logic of organization of thought and models for critical reflection on things in the world of the human being. In the field of ephemerality, the conceptual construction of POP UP delimits its life cycle by anticipation, revealing the catalysing potential of participatory practice, where it is thought as a project. It stimulates participation between creators who guide and users who experiment, promoting actions that establish relationships among stakeholders, adding value and meaning and achieving the primary intention of Design to solve problems. The research question was formulated as follows: how the POP UP concept, with its qualities of revelation, contamination, mobility and stratagem, could consolidate its conceptual meaning as a catalyst for responsible action. The orientation and good practice of the concept was guided by designing a conceptual model that would encourage an interdisciplinary, creative and participative action to optimize the Design process. In order to verify the research hypothesis, a methodology was established for active research, direct observation and fieldwork. Experimental work was carried out with sample groups to develop the model, which was subsequently object of evaluation in the methodological strategy of auscultation by expert panel. A mixed, non-interventionist and interventionist qualitative methodology was established. In a narrow sense, this research project argues that the product produces producers who produce the product, designing a model of circular transformation that sustains the process in Design. In a broad sense, the model's ambition is to inspire collaborative intelligence through participatory experimentation, proposing new social dynamics through this practice and promoting the recovery of the community, economic and exceptional senses in everyday life.

Wilson, Robert George. "Joined-up or joining-up the joining-up? : integration and overintegration in health and social care". Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.606816.

Texto completo
Resumen
Integration of health and social care services and systems was a driving policy objective of the UK government for over a decade, aiming to improve co-ordination of care and service delivery. One of the theories behind the integration of policy and practice was that it could be achieved through the implementation of information systems tools or technologies. This doctoral statement examines integration as a solution to these challenges of Joining-up' through the lens of a coherent set of published works telling the story through three projects. These projects are linked through the common theme of the problems of fragmentations in policy and practice leading to a lack of joining-up around a range of issues in health and social care service delivery. The three projects were: Virtual Electronic Social Care Record, Framework for Multiagency Environments (FAME) and Children's Service Directories. The statement details a three stage process from initial engagements in understanding the problem by reflecting on the process of integration which produced joined-ups within health and joined ups within social care and subsequently trying to solve the problem of care co-ordination between health. and social care contexts by attempting to join-up the joined-ups. Evidence is presented to show how such approaches lead to 'overintegration' where organisations and practitioners are unable to collaborate or co-ordinate appropriately which leads to a re-examination of the proposed solution of structurally driven integration. It concludes by suggesting that tightly coupled approaches are not the solution to the problems of joining up services in health and social care. Rather a looser and wider set of inter-organisational couplings supported by federable and governable services are required to deliver the sorts of joined-up services health and care envisaged by policy-makers and academics and outcomes desired by organisations, professionals, carers, patients and clients and wider society.

This thesis is a process of writing characters using a cyclical methodology to turn the writer into a reader of their own work, then back into a writer again. The components of this thesis both practice and propose writing as research and develop a concept of character that is ‘relational’. Taking Donald Barthelme’s assertion, ‘Writing is a process of dealing with not-knowing, a forcing of what and how,’ this thesis is attentive to the uncertainty of process: a process that has accreted knowledge in the form of characters and methods. Making People Up is chronologically structured in order to make visible how its form was discovered through practice. The first component is a book of character studies You are of vital importance written in the first year of the PhD. This is followed by a reflective manuscript of essays which use a method of redescription to render a generative moment between the completion of one book and the beginning of the next. The third component is a second book Social Script which is a character study and a conclusion to the thesis. Building on Adam Phillips’ assertion, ‘Being misrepresented is simply being presented with a version of ourselves – an invention – that we cannot agree with. But we are daunted by other people making us up, by the number of people we seem to be,’ this thesis starts from the premise that in the everyday we make each other up and then goes on to use the form of the character study to explore unresolvable tensions around this process. Building four parallel propositions: that character is fiction; that a relational concept of character is a critique of the extent to which we can know each other; that constituting the writer as a reader of their own characters renders a generative moment and critical reflection; that oscillating the proximity to and distance from a character provokes you, the reader, to imagine character as a relationally contingent concept. The thesis will draw on key concepts by Christopher Bollas and Adam Phillips, literary discourse on character, reader-response criticism and a selection of literary and artistic works that have informed this process of writing characters. Research Questions: 1. Does a relational concept of character critique claims to ‘know’ each other? 2. Does replacing interpretation with redescription make a reflective methodology critical and generative? 3. What kind of narrative structure will constitute a ‘relational’ character study?

Resumen
The project elaborates design opportunities for a future practice that could promotealternative sustainable lifestyles on waste handling through up-cycling activities. It doesthis on a small scale through engagement in the local communities of the Hildaneighborhood and Segepark students’ accommodations in Sweden. To thesecommunities, creative-up-cycling is explored which it introduced here as an approachwhere neighbors can participate in making new things from leftover materials. Throughthis work creative-up-cycling is a proposed recommendation for a possible service systemon how to share the leftover materials in the local resident’s communities, as well as, howto remake the items no longer needed. The empirical studies explore maker culture lifestyles and include how to find leftovermaterials, tools, space, and skills in order to guide people in creative-up-cyclingalternatives. These creative activities also build social relationship via the integration ofmultidisciplinary citizens who are living in the same community and explorations weredone on how could we elicit the skill sets from those people? What is a useful skill set inthis area today? Values like mutual physical experience, reciprocity, and ownership couldalso be found along the empirical workshops in this project. Additionally, this reportshows some interesting findings pointing towards the design process and the suggestionsof design elements; ‘Co-storage’, ‘Mix and Match furniture shop’, and ‘Renovation andup-cycling’ concept elements.Participatory design (designing with people) has been the core approach in this project.Additionally, I have been influenced by user-centered design, as well as service designapproaches in order to comprehend the services, system and activities of recycling andup-cycling in cities like: SYSAV, STPLN, Cykelköket, Återskapa, Toolpool. The findingpresented here are examples of practices that could make up the composition of recyclingand up-cycling activities in future local communities.

Resumen
This dissertation examines what happens when employees witness supervisory abuse in the workplace. In particular, it explores whether—and when—employees will respond to witnessing supervisory abuse of a coworker by engaging in prosocial actions aimed at benefitting the target of abuse. In doing so, it extends work on abusive supervision. Traditionally, abusive supervision research has focused on the impact of abuse on the victim him/herself. However, this work explores the impact of abusive supervision on third party observers. In addition, because abusive supervision represents a form of organizational injustice, this dissertation extends both work on abusive supervision and third party reactions to injustice by considering the positive, prosocial reactions abuse might trigger in employees.

Aly, Hussein A. "Regularized image up-sampling". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29073.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis addresses the problem of performing image magnification to achieve higher perceived resolution for grey-scale and color images. A new perspective on the problem is introduced through the new concept of a theoretical camera that can acquire an ideal high resolution image. A new formulation of the problem is then introduced using two ingredients: a newly designed observation model and the total-variation regularizer. An observation model, that establishes a generalized relation between the desired magnified image and the measured lower resolution image, has been newly designed based on careful study of the physical acquisition processes that have generated the images. The result is a major contribution of this thesis: a closed-form solution for obtaining the observation model. This closed form has been implemented and observation models were obtained for different typical scenarios, and their performance was shown to outperform observation models used in the literature. Two new theorems for designing the theoretical camera, adapted to the display device used, on arbitrary lattices have been developed. The thesis presents new analysis with a signal processing perspective that justifies the use of the total-variation regularizer as a priori knowledge for the magnified image; this analysis is defined on both the low and the high resolution lattices simultaneously. The resulting objective function has been minimized numerically using the level-set method with two new motions that interact simultaneously, leading to a solution scheme that is not trapped in constant-image solutions and converges to a unique solution regardless of the initial estimate. For color images, the human visual system characteristics were involved in the choice of the color space used in the implementation. It was found that a proper color space such as YCbCr that focuses on magnifying a better luminance channel provided the same result as a vectorial total-variation formulation, but at a reduced computational cost. The quality of the magnified images obtained by the new approaches of this thesis surpassed the quality of state-of-the-art methods from the literature.

Resumen
For the main part of this dissertation, I have executed a survey of nearby, main sequence A, F, and G-type stars with the CHARA Array, successfully measuring the angular diameters of forty-four stars to better than 4% accuracy. The results of these observations also yield empirical determinations of stellar linear radii and effective temperatures for the stars observed. In addition, these CHARA-determined temperatures, radii, and luminosities are fit to Yonsei-Yale isochrones to constrain the masses and ages of the stars. These quantities are compared to the results found in Allende Prieto & Lambert (1999), Holmberg et al. (2007), and Takeda (2007), who indirectly determine these same properties by fitting models to observed photometry. I find that for most cases, the models underestimate the radius of the star by ~12%, while in turn they overestimate the effective temperature by ~ 1.5 - 4%, when compared to my directly measured values, with no apparent correlation to the star's metallicity or color index. These overestimated temperatures and underestimated radii in these works appear to cause an additional offset in the star's surface gravity measurements, which consequently yield higher masses and younger ages, in particular for stars with masses greater than ~ 1.3 M_sol. Alternatively, these quantities I measure are also compared to direct measurements from a large sample of eclipsing binary stars in Andersen (1991), and excellent agreement is seen within both data sets. Finally, a multi-parameter solution is found to fit color-temperature-metallicity values of the stars in this sample to provide a new calibration of the effective temperature scale for these types of stars. Published work in the field of stellar interferometry and optical spectroscopy of early-type stars are presented in Appendix D and E, respectively.

Resumen
The aim of this report is to investigate the ductile performance of concrete tilt-up panels reinforced with cold-drawn mesh to improve the current seismic assessment procedure. The commercial impact of the project was also investigated. Engineering Advisory Group (EAG) guidelines state that a crack in a panel under face loading may be sufficient to fracture the mesh. The comments made by EAG regarding the performance of cold-drawn mesh may be interpreted as suggesting that assessment of such panels be conducted with a ductility of 1.0. Observations of tilt-up panel performance following the Christchurch earthquakes suggest that a ductility higher than μ=1.0 is likely to be appropriate for the response of panels to out-of-plane loading. An experimental test frame was designed to subject ten tilt-panel specimens to a cyclic quasi-static loading protocol. Rotation ductility, calculated from the force-displacement response from the test specimens, was found to range between 2.9 and 5.8. Correlation between tensile tests on 663L mesh, and data collected from instrumentation during testing confirmed that the mesh behaves as un-bonded over the pitch length of 150mm. Recommendation: Based on a moment-rotation assessment approach with an un-bonded length equal to the pitch of the mesh, a rotation ductility of μ=2.5 appears to be appropriate for the seismic assessment of panels reinforced with cold-drawn mesh.

As one of the fastest-growing cities in America, Tucson, Arizona suffers from a classic case of urban sprawl. Fueled by the prevalence of lot splits and cheap suburban land, little was done to curb the city's unsustainable growth until 1998, when the discovery of endangered pygmy owls in Tucson sparked the creation of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. The plan aims to preserve biodiversity in Tucson and surrounding Pima County by limiting development in biologically sensitive areas of the desert. In addition, Pima County is applying for a county-wide Section 10 Permit from US Fish & Wildlife Service. Water is another limiting factor in the city's growth. When Tucson overdrafted its groundwater resources, the city bought additional water from the Colorado River, which was channeled to Tucson through the Central Arizona Project. Due to infrastructure problems, initial delivery of canal water in 1992 was shut down in 1994. Tucson Water, the city's main water utility, later turned to recharge and recovery as a way to treat river water. Even with the addition of river water, Tucson, like other cities in the American Southwest, continues to search for new water sources for its ever-growing population.

Their method was based on the detection of the civilization's "waste heat": as any physical process takes place, heat is being released to the environment and it can be detected as an excess of the IR flux of the object. Garrett [2015] combined the data from the G-HAT catalogue with the 20cm flux from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and 9 objects with an anomalous flux excess at IR wavelengths were identied. This work is based on the the needed follow-up observations for each of those 9 sources. This work is divided into three parts: in the first part we explain the theory of the "waste heat" search method, in the second part we give details about our submitted proposal for a submillimeter follow-up observation of NGC0814, using the Atacama Pathnder EXperiment (APEX) and in the third part we present a strategy for the required follow-up observations for the rest of the candidates.

Resumen
Bulk toroidal rotation has proven capable of stabilising both dangerous MHD modes and turbulence. This has allowed existing tokamaks to generate extra fusion power at a fixed size and magnetic field. However, most methods of inducing the plasma to spin do not appear to scale well to larger devices such as ITER or a future power plant. In this thesis, we explore a notable exception: up-down asymmetry in the tokamak magnetic equilibrium. When tokamak flux surfaces are not mirror symmetric about the midplane, turbulence can transport momentum from one surface to the next, creating spontaneous rotation that is "intrinsic" to the geometry. We seek to maximise this intrinsic rotation by finding optimal up-down asymmetric flux surface shapes. First, we use the ideal MHD model to show that low order external shaping (e.g. elongation) is best for creating up-down asymmetric flux surfaces throughout the device. Then, we calculate realistic up-down asymmetric equilibria for input into nonlinear gyrokinetic turbulence analysis. Analytic gyrokinetics shows that, in the limit of fast shaping effects, a poloidal tilt of the flux surface shaping has little effect on turbulent transport. Since up-down symmetric surfaces do not transport momentum, this invariance to tilt implies that devices with mirror symmetry about any line in the poloidal plane will drive minimal rotation. Accordingly, further analytic investigation suggests that non-mirror symmetric flux surfaces with envelopes created by the beating of fast shaping effects may create significantly stronger momentum transport. Guided by these analytic results, we carry out local nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of non-mirror symmetric flux surfaces created with the lowest possible shaping effects. First, we consider tilted elliptical flux surfaces with a Shafranov shift and find little increase in the momentum transport when the effect of the pressure profile on the equilibrium is included. We then simulate flux surfaces with independently-tilted elongation and triangularity. These two-mode configurations show a 60% increase over configurations with just elongation or triangularity. A rough analytic estimate indicates that the optimal two-mode configuration can drive rotation with an on-axis Alfven Mach number of 1.5% in an ITER-like machine.

Resumen
Design is a very ambiguous term. It can be referred to as a thing, an activity, a process, and even a strategy. Because of its many meanings and definitions, it is argued that design can have more than one purpose or role. It is also argued that these roles can mature and expand within the organizational frames, which in turn can have an effect on the organizational culture and business strategy. Recent studies have shown that design-led organizations outperform other organizations in terms of stock market value and competitive advantage. As such, the topic of using design strategically, in combination with the question of how to mature in design, has become popular, both in the academic world and in the business world. In response, different models have emerged claiming to assess organizations in relation to how theyutilize design. These models can evoke discussions that subsequently can lead to knowledgeexchange and potentially drive actions toward change. This thesis explores how organizations go about maturing in design, as well as the challenges and benefits they see within this process. Furthermore, it examines the use of a game as a boundary object to facilitate knowledge exchange and support organizations in their efforts of maturing in design. Findings include that when utilized in a workshop setting, the game facilitated discussions, knowledge exchange and knowledge appropriation related to design in the organization. Through these findings, it is argued that the boundary object has the potential to support the organizations in their efforts of maturing in design.

Resumen
Children’s Literature Grows Up proposes that there is a revolution occurring in contemporary children’s fiction that challenges the divide that has long existed between literature for children and literature for adults. Children’s literature, though it has long been considered worthy of critical inquiry, has never enjoyed the same kind of extensive intellectual attention as adult literature because children’s literature has not been considered to be serious literature or “high art.” Children’s Literature Grows Up draws upon recent scholarship about the thematic transformations occurring in the category, but demonstrates that there is also an emerging aesthetic and stylistic sophistication in recent works for children that confirms the existence of children’s narratives that are equally complex, multifaceted, and worthy of the same kind of academic inquiry that is afforded to adult literature. This project investigates the history of children’s literature in order to demonstrate the way that children’s literature and adult literature have, at different points in history, grown closer or farther apart, explores the reasons for this ebb and flow, and explains why contemporary children’s literature marks a reunification of the two categories. Employing J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels as a its primary example, Children’s Literature Grows Up demonstrates that this new kind of contemporary children’s fiction is a culmination of two traditions: the tradition of the readerly children’s book and the tradition of the writerly adult novel. With the fairy tales, mythologies, legends, and histories that contemporary writers weave into their texts, contemporary fictions for children incorporate previous defining characteristics of children’s fantasy literature and tap into our cultural memory; with their sophisticated style, complex narrative strategies, and focus on characterization, these new fictions display the realism and seriousness of purpose which have become the adult novel’s defining features. Children’s Literature Grows Up thus concludes that contemporary children’s fiction’s power comes from the way in which it combines story and art by bringing together both the children’s literature tradition and the tradition of the adult novel, as well as the values to which they are allied. Contemporary writers for children therefore raise the stakes of their narratives and change the tradition by moving beyond the expected conventions of their category.

Resumen
This thesis, consisting of a novel and a dissertation, examines the intersections of place, identity and fiction. During earlier studies I encountered nomadology as represented in Stephen Muecke's work on Australian Indigeneity, and also the developments on theories and practices of nomadology undertaken by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. I began to explore the production of culture in cities read through these ideas. In the present work, my thinking and approaches have been extended significantly by Edward W. Soja's insights into lived experience, cities and spaces, and by the rhizomatics of Deleuze and Guattari. What is presented here is a hybrid text - novel and dissertation. Both explore ideas about the production of culture in cities and the exchange of external and internal processes that occurs between people and places. I wanted to articulate what I see as particular cultural processes of postmodern cities, which have developed in ways that depart from conventional understandings of what constitutes urban environments and urbanism. There are co-relations between cities that began in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the increasing global influence of American popular culture, and new millennium developments redefined by technological insurgence. We have seen the emergence of a new kind of city, one that offers accelerated, ahistorical, and dispersed spaces and experiences. My theorising of the 'new frontier city' is explicated in the dissertation, and represented in the novel through the Gold Coast. The relationship between urban formations and postmodern cultural signification is mimicked by the relationship between the two texts. While neither directly refers to the other, an association is developed whereby key characteristics of the new frontier city, such as spectacle, subterfuge, simulation and speculation, are manifested by my fictional characters, thematics and stylistic approaches. In addition, the dissertation sometimes works creatively while the novel is derivative of actual icons, people, monuments and events. The work examines the collapse of distinction between the 'real' (traditionally represented by the city and urban formations) and the hyperreal (presented by fictionality). I see and position the cities of Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Gold Coast as texts - as new frontier cities where the language of signs, simulation and consumption permeates the cultural and urban fabric in intriguing ways. I argue for the new frontier city as a site rich in narrative potential. I critique readings that privilege Euro-centric, modernist notions of high cultural values and cosmopolitanism which continue to exclude the new frontier from 'serious' cultural status. The fascination I experience for the new frontier city is enacted through an amalgam; a methodology which is applicable to the divergent urban and cultural formations of new frontier cities and the kinds of fictions they produce. The assemblaic and nomadic approach taken in the thesis allows for the development of a relationship of association. For though I am influenced throughout by contemporary urban theorists such as Soja, Sudjic and Frost, whose variant perspectives challenge dominant discourses in their fields, the text remains deliberately unsituated. It contributes to understandings in the realm of urban policy and analysis but ultimately functions as a treatise on how the writer can merge both fictional and non-fictional perspectives to construct meaning and narrative in the seemingly random and impenetrable urban landscapes of the new frontier. The novel and dissertation are therefore parallel documents which map this process rhizomatically. I resist explicit and didactic explications in order to 'mimic' (in Deleuzian terms) the more arbitary and distillatory process of the creative writer. The opening chapters of Future Frontier explore the development history of Los Angeles, the Gold Coast and Las Vegas, concentrating on the meaning and characteristics of the new frontier city in relation to the narrative experience. Section Two concentrates on broader definitions of new frontier cities and the contrasts with European architectural and urban experience. Section Three explores the effects of cinema and cinematic mimicry on new frontier cities. This section features micro-concentrations on celebrity worship, reality TV, plastic surgery and the geography of extreme experience. Section Four focuses primarily on the Gold Coast and examines ways in which the distinctive processes of the new frontier have influenced significant subsections of its culture in the arenas of politics, development and architecture. Section Five posits a 'culture of subterfuge'. Here the associated effects of gambling, risk, speculation, crime and fraud are examined. The closing statement, Culture of Contradiction, offers a navigation through the narrative potentials of the new frontier by recognising it as a site fuelled by inherent, overlapping and divergent fictional voices. This analysis informs the stylistic technique of the novel, which features three contrasting voices and timescapes. These 'speakers' converge obsessively on the elusive character of Jade. The key storyteller is The Dealer, a croupier who attaches himself to Jade in ways which are reminiscent of classic noir but subverted by his displacement in the new frontier. His object is to reveal, to 'turn over' the present. Another aspect of Jade's character is evoked by the recollective voice of Anthony who is isolated and remains ignorant of other players in the game. The third voice is representative of the city - the omnipotent eye of the Gold Coast. Each 'version' of Jade's story overlaps the other. Because the reader never gains access to her own interior monologue Jade remains absent, in an intimate sense, while being relentlessly pursued, coveted and externally revealed. Jade, like the new frontier city, must always be read and experienced through the chimera of unreality - through the affected gaze of others - in order to be known. Jade fascinates as the new frontier city does, and she is marked by desire for impermanence.

My dissertation addresses the questions 1) what cues children and adults have in their cuebox (i.e., the set of cues available for making inferences or categorizing), 2) how people’s intuition about the importance of the cues drives their information search, and 3) how the framing of a problem and the experimental design influence these intuitions. A first project investigated developmental differences in how children and adults solve a sequential binary categorization task. Results show that, apart from age-related differences, children’s but not adults’ inquiry strategies improve if objects are represented at the basic level (e.g., dog) but not if represented at the subordinate level (e.g., Dalmatian) or when the basic level is specified by additional features (e.g., dog, kennel, to wag, collar). Explanations are that, unlike other representations, basic level objects trigger features that are useful for categorization, and therefore help children ask more effective questions. A second project tested children and young adults on two inference problems, by manipulating whether cues were generated or given. Results show that, only when generating their own cues, younger children matched or even outperformed the accuracy of older children and young adults, by generating cues that were as informative as the those generated by older children and young adults. A third project examined the type, amount and informativeness of the cues in people’s cuebox. Further, it investigated the influence of the type of cues on the ability of children and young adults to generate or select the most informative cue available. Results show that children’s cuebox contains more perceptual cues than young adults’. We found no difference between the two age groups in terms of informativeness of the cues generated. Young adults showed the tendency to systematically consider non-perceptual cues more informative than perceptual cues. Children showed such tendency only in a cue-selection task.
