Resumen
The prominent division in early America between the established eastern populations and communities in the West is evident when viewed through the lens of eighteenth-century Philadelphia newspapers, which themselves employed an East-West paradigm to interpret four events: the Paxton Boys Incident, Regulator Rebellion, Shays's Rebellion, and Constitutional Convention. Through the choices of what words to use to describe these clashes, through oversights, omissions, and misrepresentations, and sometimes through more direct tactics, Philadelphia newspapermen revealed a persistent cultural bias against and rivalry with western communities. This study illustrates how pervasive this contrast between East and West was in the minds of easterners; how central a feature of early American culture they considered it to be.

Resumen
This thesis explores the relationship of the European Community/Union (EC/EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) within the context of five deduced functions of inter- and transregionalism: balancing, institution building, rationalising, agenda setting and collective identity formation. The objectives of the study are threefold. The first, at the micro-level, is to explore the relationship between the European Community/Union and ASEAN at the inter- and transregional level since its inception in the 1970s. Secondly, and related to the first, it is an objective to test, within the context of the EC/EU-ASEAN relationship, whether the framework of functions of inter- and transregional relations deduced by scholars are actually performed. Such an in-depth study of the performance of these functions has not previously been undertaken. Thirdly, at the macro-level, is the objective of supplementing the framework of functions of inter- and transregionalism by: (i) elaborating the nature of the functions performed in more detail than has so far been provided by scholars; and (ii) seeking to explain why these functions are or are not performed, or indeed are only partially performed, through the introduction of actorness as a moderating variable. This is governed by the working hypothesis that: the level of actorness ofthe regional groupings involved in any inter- or transregional dialogue or process will affect the extent to which, and the manner in which, the five deduced functions of such dialogues are performed.

Millman, Thomas M. "A temporal analysis of East Pacific and East Atlantic ship-tracks". Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/24066.

Texto completo
Resumen
The spatial, temporal and radiative properties of ship tracks are described with an analysis of AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) imagery. 15 cams are analyzed including 6 from the Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment (ASTEX) in the Azores islands, 6 from ship tracks observed off the coast of Oregon and 3 from the 1987 First ISCCP (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project) Regional Experiment (FIRE) (Starr, 1987). The reflectance in channel 3 (3.7 microns) of each ship track and associated background are analyzed as a function of time. The width of each ship track is also plotted as a function of time to determine their spatial and dispersive qualities. The eastern Pacific Ocean ship tracks are generally less dispersive, but two ASTEX ship tracks were more dispersive than what would be consistent over land. In individual cases, higher ambient reflectances are associated with environments that are less sensitive to ship effluent resulting in lower ship track reflectances. But in the composite of all ship track cases, higher ambient reflectances are associated with environments that are more sensitive to ship effluent resulting in higher ship track reflectances. Though the number of cases was limited due to weather and other phenomena, the reflectance, width and dispersion analysis highlight the commonalities and differences between the ship tracks from the two areas. This indicates that the state of the atmosphere has a substantial effect on ship track formation.... METEOROLOGY, SPATIAL, TEMPORAL AND RADIATIVE PROPERTIES OF SHIPTRACKS

Resumen
The study deals with the relative movements between Africa and Antarctica in Middle Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous times using new data from four campaigns (2006-2010). Aeromagnetic measurements in the 5W Enderby Basin clearly image the continent-ocean-transition east of the Gunnerus Ridge. Spreading anomalies are absent, pointing to a formation of the oceanic crust during Cretaceous Normal superchron times. Velocity and density modelling of two wide-angle seismic profiles across the Central Mozambique continental margin reveal continental crust, thinning seawards by 50% over a distance of ~130 km. Farther south, oceanic crust is overlain by sediments with high P-wave velocities around 4. 8 km/s. An extensive lower crustal high-velocity-body has been found in both profiles. Identifications of magnetic spreading anomalies reveal that the COT is located closer to the coast than supposed so far. M41 n is interpreted as oldest existing spreading anomaly. New magnetic and gravity data across the Mozambique Ridge and the Northern Natal Valley and their similarity to potential field data on the Mozambique Coastal Plains point to a mainly oceanic nature from the plains south and two southward jumps of the spreading centre. The Astrid Ridge is subdivided by the Astrid Fracture Zone into a northern and a southern part with different magnetic signatures and is interpreted to consist of oceanic crust. The regional results were implemented into a new kinematic model between Africa and Antarctica, postulating a tight continental Gondwana fit, a two-stage breakup and a southward movement of the Grunehogna Craton east of the Mozambique Ridge during the second stage of breakup

Gooch, Lauren. "Atmospheric halocarbon measurements with a focus on East and South-East Asia". Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2016. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/67064/.

Texto completo
Resumen
A large variety of halocarbon species are present in the atmosphere and can significantly impact stratospheric ozone depletion and/or global warming. Compound use has been phased out, reduced and replaced for some species under global control measures such as the Montreal and Kyoto Protocols. However, relatively long atmospheric lifetimes, imperfect substitutes and incomplete reductions in usage mean that global abundances of halocarbon species still require regular monitoring. This is especially true for the rapidly developing East and South-East Asian regions where widespread emissions have been repeatedly reported in recent years. To detect a variety of halocarbon mixing ratios, air samples are cryotrapped and analysed via gas chromatography couple with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Highly sensitive and precise instrumentation widens this range further and the automation of the analysis system would improve and extend sample throughput. A semi-automated inlet system for a GC-MS set-up was constructed and cryotrapping with liquid nitrogen was tested successfully. In the atmosphere, anthropogenic emissions are the main source of many halocarbons, however methyl halides also have large natural sources including from cultivated crops like rice. Using genetically mapped and altered Arabidopsis thaliana and Physcomitrella patens, methyl halide emission rates were calculated. Differences found when compared to wild type plants indicated the potential for developing ‘ozone-safe’ crops through manipulation of the HOL-gene, which may particularly benefit Asian emissions. Three short-term sampling campaigns based in Taiwan assessed abundances of mainly anthropogenically-sourced halocarbons in East Asia. Backwards trajectory modelling was used to estimate potential source regions and both enhanced and close to background mixing ratios were observed for a range of species. Pollution events and interspecies correlations were found for many halocarbons with poorly understood sources such as CFC-113a and HCFC-133a. A further short-term campaign based in Bachok, Malaysia assessed long-range transport of ozone-depleting species to South-East Asia during the cold surge phenomenon of the winter monsoon, when rapid vertical transport may occur. Short-lived species were observed at significantly high abundances suggesting their potential impact on stratospheric ozone may have been previously underestimated.

Resumen
The aim of the master thesis is to characterize and evaluate the current security system in East Asia, to show the security strategies of the system actors and the existing friction points, and to assess the future development of the security system in place. For this purpose the author first defines the East Asia's security system using the conceptual tools of three international relations theories, namely neo-realism, neo-liberalism, and constructivism. In the following section, the security strategies and security issues are discussed. In the final section, the international relations theories are used again to assess the stability of the current security system and lastly the prospects for a change of the system are evaluated.

Abstract : This thesis investigates the Orientalist gaze reversal in the autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis, written by Marjane Satrapi. The story of Persepolis, divided in two parts, depicts Marji's life since she is 10 years old, in 1979, during the Islamic Revolution, until she is 24 years old. My study is concerned, more specifically, with how the identity construction of the main character in the text, which is Marji herself, works on the reversal of the Western gaze upon her. In each location Marji finds herself, be it in Austria or in Iran, she has to deal with different characteristics and specificities of her own identity in order to reverse the Orientalist gaze. The strategies used by Marji are different according to her location. In some situations, the reversion is constructed by using the Western discourse against the Western institutions or people themselves. In others, individualization and/or heterogeneity are responsible for this reversal. The use of generalizations also works on debunking the Orientalist gaze. Furthermore, some features of the graphic novel medium and the autobiographical genre also collaborate for the gaze reversal.

Bradshaw, Michael Joseph. "East-West trade and the regional development of Siberia and the Soviet Far East". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26964.

Texto completo
Resumen
Studies of the role of East-West trade in Soviet economic development often assume that Siberia and the Far East play an important role in trading relations, but few studies have examined the extent of that role and the relationship between trade and economic development within the region. This study addresses two interrelated questions: firstly, what is the role of Siberia and the Far East in trade with the West, and secondly, what is the role of East-West trade in Siberian development. Regional trade participation data are not available. The study therefore examines the composition of Soviet trade with the West and the industrial structure of the Siberian economy, in order to deduce the extent of regional participation in trade. Soviet exports to the West are dominated by natural resources, while imports from the West comprise machinery and equipment, manufactured goods and agricultural products. Analysis of the Siberian economy reveals a specialisation in the production and processing of natural resources. Estimates of export participation show that since the late 1970s the region has become the Soviet Union's most important source of foreign currency. Imports of Western technology are shown to play an important part in natural resource production and in the creation of Siberia's Territorial-Production Complexes. In many instances compensation agreements tie the use of imports to export production. Overall the value of Siberian exports exceeds the cost of imports of Western technology, so that the region generates a sizeable foreign currency surplus. In conclusion, a simple model of the trade and development process is presented which relates the pattern of foreign trade participation to the process of regional development. The impact of Western imports is felt mainly in the European core region where they provide additional resources to feed the population and renovate the industrial base; the impact of exports to the West is felt mainly in Siberia and the Far East where they increase demands for natural resource production. Thus, East-West trade serves to perpetuate the existing core-periphery pattern of Soviet regional development.

Dalrymple, Nolan. "North-east childhoods : regional identity in children's novels of the North East of England". Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/890.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis explores how children's writers have participated in the process of representing and constructing the identity of the North East of England. It argues that there exists a dominant North-East aesthetic which has become deeply embedded within British children's fiction, and that several of its key motifs (labour, industry and decline; traditional gender roles and landscape) recur frequently within portrayals of the region in writing for the young. This aesthetic contributes to a perception of the region as both marginal and marginalised, and masks realities about the North East. Following an overview of children's literature set in the region, from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries, the focus moves to the work of Robert Westall, a major children's writer who was born in Tyneside and set much of h'is fiction within the region. The Westall chapters draw on the Robert Westall Collection at Seven Stories: The Centre for Children's Books. The more recent work of North-East writer David Almond is considered in the closing chapters which also draw on unpublished material and interviews for this thesis. Key works discussed: Robert Westall, Falling into Glory, Fathom Five, The Kingdom by the Sea, The Machine Gunners, A Time of Fire, The Wind Eye, The Watch House; David Almond, Clay, The Fire-Eaters, Heaven Eyes, Kit's Wilderness, My Dad's a Birdman, The Savage, Secret Heart, Skellig.

Resumen
The ethnobotany of East Timor was examined for the first time with emphasis being placed on documenting traditional knowledge of medicinal plants. The medicinal plant traditions of 3 distinct East Timorese cultures were studied and compared using both modern quantitative ethnobotanical methods but also with classical descriptive ethnobotanical techniques. A total of 116 medicinal plant species were identified. The medicinal plant traditions of the Laklei and Idate cultures of East Timor were compared using Trotter and Logan's (1986) quantitative 'informant consensus factor'. On average, informant consensus was greater in Laklei suggesting a medicinal plant tradition that is more well defined than in Idate, where informants are more likely to use the same medicinal plants when treating similar illnesses. Furthermore, only 11 of 86 medicinal plant species documented with these two cultures were used by both cultures of which only 6 had similar uses. The medicinal plant tradition of a third indigenous culture, the Fataluku people, was documented using classical descriptive ethnobotanical techniques. Over 70% of the Fataluku medicinal plants were different from those used by the Laklei or the Idate people. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis illustrates how Pompey's annexations and organizing of the eastern provinces for Rome were more pragmatic than imperialistic. Greek and Eastern specialists are used in order to give a better back story than the imperialist thesis offers in its reasoning for the annexations. By adding more detail from the Greek and Eastern perspective, other dimensions are opened that shed new light upon the subject of Pompey's eastern settlements. Through this method, the pirate campaign and the annexation of Syria are greatly developed, especially in concern to changes in culture that Pompey's settlements forced. The culture of piracy and banditry were curbed by the eastern annexations. In Syria the Greek settlements were revived and protected from the expansion of Arab and Jewish dynasts. Considering the annexation of Pontus, a more detailed analysis on the lex Pompeia and the new taxation system is developed, which questions parts of the imperialist thesis especially in regards to role of the publicani. Graeco-Roman cultural spread is also developed in the Pontus chapter to show some of Pompey's motives. Previous works are expanded upon and synthesized into this work, the aim being to reconcile some of the arguments, concluding with the proposition that Pompey, his efforts, and his settlements, were more pragmatic than imperialistic.

Resumen
Regional integration is not a new phenomenon but has become an increasingly important topic of political research with the continued expansion of the European Union as well as an increased number of regional organizations around the globe. This paper will seek to use both Europe and East Asia as illustrations in order to better comprehend the driving forces behind integration as well as why some regions are further integrated than others. The purpose of this research is to achieve a better understanding of what causes regional integration in hopes of developing a more inclusive theory. More specifically, it aims to see how integrated the region of East Asia is, in particular when compared to Europe. Through comparing the two regions and analyzing factors in both Europe and East Asia as determined by current integration theory, this research aims to achieve a better understanding of the driving forces behind regional integration as an international phenomenon. My research is an attempt to tie together the multiple existing theories of regional integration with the goal of creating a more cohesive and measurable theory. With an increased understanding of regional integration, we will be better able to both explain and predict integration in both Europe and East Asia, as well as other, less integrated regions around the world.

Resumen
This study has examined the levels, trends and differentials of infant and child mortality, fertility and migration in East Java. Based on these findings, alternative projections of the population from 1980 to 2000 were made, and the implications of these projections for school enrolment and the labour force were discussed. The main analysis was based on the 1980 census and the 1980 East Java Population Survey. In general, the results of this study confirm that infant and child mortality have decreased gradually, probably as a result of social and economic development. The age specific fertility rates also have decreased since the mid-1960s. The results also reveal mortality and fertility differentials according to urban-rural residence, maternal education and age of mother. The total fertility rate in East Java was one of the lowest among all provinces in Indonesia, and the annual growth rate of East Java was lower than the national level. In balance East Java had no out-migration. East Java, in terms of size of population is the largest of the 27 provinces in Indonesia with 29.2 million in 1980. The population will continue to increase to the year 2000, ranging from 36.0 million to 38.8 million depending on the rates of fertility decline and out-migration. Primary school enrolments are not expected to increase rapidly, because of already high levels of enrolment and declines in fertility, but secondary school enrolments should continue to increase due to an anticipated greater enrolment rate. The labour force also will increase in size, but not as rapidly as would be expected because of anticipated declines in participation rates for the youngest and oldest groups of the working-age population.

Compared to this, the comparative study of East Asian welfare systems has remained relatively underdeveloped. Particularly, during and after the Asian financial crisis in 1997, East Asia’s economic and social structures came under strain, and their social progress faced many challenges, which sparked new debates regarding the crisis and its social consequences. The classic Productivist Welfare Capitalism (PWC) thesis faced a fundamental challenge as part of these debates. Drawing on the PWC thesis, this thesis theoretically and empirically explored the welfare developments and reforms of East Asian states in this context. The analysis of welfare systems focuses on the debates of the distinction between ‘productive’ and ‘protective’ dimensions of welfare. As such, six key policy fields, education, health-care services, family policy, old-age pensions, housing and the protective labour market policy, of six states, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, over the past two decades are explored by set-theoretic methods. First, employing fuzzy-set ideal type analysis (fsITA) it is argued that it is inappropriate to talk about a single, homogeneous welfare model in East Asia. East Asian states have distinctive patterns of welfare development often combining ‘productive’ and ‘protective’ welfare policies. What is more, after the 1997 Asian financial crisis, social protection became a more important aspect of welfare systems across East Asian states. Second, the reasons for the diverse developmental trajectories are examined by employing fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Here, the findings suggest that in contrast to the PWC thesis, economic growth was not a necessary condition for welfare development in East Asia. Instead, it is argued that welfare development can occur under both weak and strong socio-economic conditions in combination with demographic conditions and the level of globalisation. This thesis thus advances current debates in the literature on East Asian welfare models and development and sets the stage for future research.

Park, Jinsoo. "Sino-Japanese competitive leadership and East Asian regionalism : the Chiang Mai Initiative and East Asian organisations". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2011. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/35534/.

Resumen
East Asia and East Asian regionalism have gained greater attention. Given this, what makes this region and who determines its shape are very important questions, which are, in turn, highly relevant to questions of regional leadership. This thesis thus aims to examine and explain the nature of Sino-Japanese regional leadership and explore its impacts on the shape of the East Asia region and East Asian regionalism. It does so particularly with reference to the CMI and regional organisation-building from the APT to the EAS. The thesis explores two key themes. First, it seeks to bridge a gap in the study of East Asian regionalism in particular and East Asia in general by focusing on the dynamics of Sino-Japanese leadership competition. There is still a lack of a dedicated study to examine the dynamics of regional leadership in the region and its impact on the East Asia region and East Asian regionalism. It addresses why regional powers assert regional leadership and how their assertions of regional leadership change their interests and behaviours with regard to regional cooperation. By doing so, it can help better comprehend the interests and strategies of China and Japan and their impacts on the shape of East Asian regionalism. Secondly, this thesis aims to fill in a gap in the study of global or regional leadership by developing a constructivist analytical tool to define leadership and examine the dynamics of leadership. It highlights that neither the realist and liberal approaches to international leadership nor the emerging literature on regional powers provides a good analytical tool to conceptualise regional leadership and to examine the dynamics of regional leadership competition. It argues that some insights of constructivism help to better comprehend the dynamics of regional leadership.

Ledger, Gillian Deborah. "Analysis of the impact of East European change upon European Community and East European liner shipping". Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2018.

Texto completo
Resumen
In its attempt to analyse the impact of East European change upon the European Community and East European liner shipping industries this thesis covers an extensive range of highly topical subject areas. The wide range of non uniform information gleaned from the research and the question of spurious objectivity form the main arguments behind the use of qualitative rather than quantitative assessment throughout. The diverse study area also necessitated a narrowing to the case of Polish Ocean Lines' North Atlantic operations to enable a meaningful analysis to be carried out. The early part of the thesis examines the background to the East European situation before moving on to identify the main issues that directly affect Polish shipping, through the use of a Contextual model. Using the information gained here a newly developed Contextual Matrix Model then enables the main issues to be extracted. These issues indicate that the changes affecting Polish Ocean Lines require an exercise in repositioning. To assess this fully a framework approach is developed to determine Polish Ocean Lines' position for 1988 and 1992. A further framework is then created for the European Community competitors' 1992 position, in order that a positional comparison can be carried out with Polish Ocean Lines. The results of the comparison indicate that repositioning is taking place at Polish Ocean Lines as a direct reaction to the changes occurring throughout East Europe. The discussion concludes that this is a dynamic, volatile and topical area which raises a number of points of possible interest for further research.

The high levels of female unemployment in majority Muslim countries constitutes significant lost opportunity on overall economic development. Nations that employ more women enjoy higher GDP's and a diverse talent pool. There has been little research done on the quality of women's career paths in these countries. Some nations struggle to push women into the workforce due to cultural and traditional expectations. In this thesis, we present a survey-based approach to understanding three barriers that could hinder women's entry to and development in the workforce. The barriers discussed are barriers to initial entry, barriers to retention and barriers to promotion. Cross examination of survey results from respondents in Middle Eastern countries and Southeast Asia have verified the high tertiary educational attainment of women. The results have verified the struggles of working women obtaining promotions. Working mothers in particular find difficulties balancing work and household responsibilities, which could affect their retention in the workforce pipeline. We end the survey analysis by providing recommendations to better strengthen women's retention and overall job satisfaction. This includes spreading awareness, adding guidelines to auditing institutions, and establishing new policies to make the workforce a more attractive platform for women, such as by subsidizing childcare and transportation. We contend that although these countries have put great efforts in attracting women to the workforce, more systemic female welfare policies will be needed in order to better capitalize on the valuable human capital asset that women add to the talent pool.
