Texto completoNowadays Artificial Intelligence (AI) is omnipresent in our society. The recentdevelopment of learning methods based on deep neural networks alsocalled "Deep Learning" has led to a significant improvement in visual representation models.and textual. In this thesis, we aim to further advance image representation and understanding.Revolving around Visual Semantic Embedding (VSE) approaches, we explore different directions: We present relevant background covering images and textual representation and existing multimodal approaches. We propose novel architectures further improving retrieval capability of VSE and we extend VSE models to novel applications and leverage embedding models to visually ground semantic concept. Finally, we delve into the learning process andin particular the loss function by learning differentiable approximation of ranking based metric

Texto completoThe purpose of this thesis is to study the importance of illustrations and their interaction with the verbal text when translating picturebooks. For that purpose, our study is based on the interpretative theory of translation, in particular, the notion of effect. We identified several key features of this literary genre and established a typology of intersemiotic relationship in order to understand the workings of picturebooks, and to show that the visual and its interaction with the verbal serve to create iconotexts. Verbal-visual interaction, which is a fundamental iconotextual strategy to produce and interpret a picturebook, is actualized by the reader-beholder. This means that the effect of intersemiotic relationship emerges from the confrontation between the intention of the author and the illustrator and the response of readerbeholder. The intersemiotic dynamics thus have significance in the translation of iconotexts, which has as its aim to produce a similar effect to that of the source text

Texto completoThe aim of this PhD research is to study the relationship between text and image in contemporary American literature; in other words, to analyze the in-between represented by the visual novel, a genre introduced by Thierry Smolderen in 2006.My main corpus is made of two novels, Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves (2000) and Jonathan Safran Foer’s Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2005), and two comic books, Chris Ware’s Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth (2000) and Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home (2006). I start by assuming that those two genres, in spite of their distinctive characteristics, share similarities in their narrative techniques, and therefore suggest an analysis in three parts. First, I shall study the visual devices used by the above books, focusing in particular on the instances where the text becomes visual, and the image takes on narrative qualities. Then, a second part will concentrate on the way those devices emphasis the space of the page, and how they modify the narration by questioning its temporal and spatial conventions. Finally, I will analyze the book, as a motif and as an object in the corpus. The visual novel is not only a new way to approach the text/image relationship in literature; it also allows us to imagine new forms that go beyond the current standards, of which the books studied here are the first examples

Texto completoIn the last decade, the evolution of Deep Learning techniques to learn meaningful data representations for text and images, combined with an important increase of multimodal data, mainly from social network and e-commerce websites, has triggered a growing interest in the research community about the joint understanding of language and vision. The challenge at the heart of Multimodal Machine Learning is the intrinsic difference in semantics between language and vision: while vision faithfully represents reality and conveys low-level semantics, language is a human construction carrying high-level reasoning. One the one hand, language can enhance the performance of vision models. The underlying hypothesis is that textual representations contain visual information. We apply this principle to two Zero-Shot Learning tasks. In the first contribution on ZSL, we extend a common assumption in ZSL, which states that textual representations encode information about the visual appearance of objects, by showing that they also encode information about their visual surroundings and their real-world frequence. In a second contribution, we consider the transductive setting in ZSL. We propose a solution to the limitations of current transductive approaches, that assume that the visual space is well-clustered, which does not hold true when the number of unknown classes is high. On the other hand, vision can expand the capacities of language models. We demonstrate it by tackling Visual Question Generation (VQG), which extends the standard Question Generation task by using an image as complementary input, by using visual representations derived from Computer Vision
