Resumen
The methods for subsynchronous oscillation mitigation based on SVC and STATCOM are analyzed in this paper. According to the IEEE first benchmark model, the electrical damping coefficients respectively provided by SVC and STATCOM connected at the generator terminal, as well as positive damping condition, are deduced by complex torque coefficient approach. Correlative factors which influence the two positive dampings are compared. The analysis results indicate that the positive damping provided by SVC is proportional to the size of system voltage. The positive damping provided by STATCOM is not affected by the size of system voltage, which is mostly proportional to the subsynchronous voltage produced itself. The controllers of SVC and STATCOM are designed and the positive dampings separately offered by SVC and STATCOM are optimized by phase compensation with test signal method. The time domain simulation reveals that STATCOM has stronger damping ability than SVC in the case of short circuit fault.

Resumen
The static var compensator (SVC) is a device which is designed to compensate reactive power, increase voltage stability and to reduce voltage fluctuations. Thyristor controlled reactors (TCRs) are composed of reactors in series with bidirectional pair of thyristors. Current through reactors can be continuously controlled by changing the firing angle of thyristor valves, thus the inductive power can be easily controlled. Typical applications of TCRs in AC systems are voltage stabilization and temporary overvoltage reduction, stability improvement, damping of power oscillations and load balancing. In this paper, harmonic performance analysis of SVC equipped with TCRs is presented. SVCs utilizing TCRs generate harmonic currents and therefore it is necessary to determine the effect of harmonics generated by the SVC on the power system and its elements. This includes interaction of the SVC with the system, the SVC performance under balanced and unbalanced operating conditions and finally, evaluation of countermeasures such as installation of harmonic filters. In order to carry out these analysis, it is necessary to determine harmonic characteristics of the network at the point of SVC connection, existing levels of harmonics, and to know appropriate standards regarding acceptable harmonic levels in the power system. Since harmonic distortions in the system are caused by the interaction between SVC and the system, all system contingencies which may affect system’s frequency response should be evaluated. Detailed power system model should be considered to make sure that parallel resonance points of system do not directly coincide with characteristic harmonics from the SVC. Harmonics generated by SVCs are largely dependent on the operating point within the SVC characteristic. A conservative approach is to use the maximum values of harmonics generated within the spectrum irrespective of the operating point. The results of harmonic performance analysis are important for appropriate design of SVC. Harmonic performance analysis related to SVC application which are presented in this paper include the determination of: frequency response of the transmission network impedance required for the specification and design of filters; the effects of SVC generated harmonics on the power system; the overall filter requirements and countermeasures to reduce harmonics to acceptable levels.

Resumen
Reasonable allocation reactive power compensation devices in coal mine system can not only develop power factor, it can also solve bus voltage fluctuation problem of coal mine system. By analyzing load characteristic in coal mine system, non-linear impulse load and induction motor can cause bus voltage fluctuation. The characteristic of SVC is that its response speed is quick and it can be adjusted continuously. But the price of SVC is expensive. Reasonable allocation method is that a portion SVC is installed in the bus that are connected with a number of non-linear impulse load and induction motor, SVC is only used to undertake fluctuation load. It can solve voltage fluctuation problem well. Simulation and analysis on WSCC-9 bus system testifies the validation of the proposed method.

Resumen
<p>This paper focuses on analyzing and evaluating impact of a Static Var Compensator (SVC) on the measured impedance at distance protection relay location on power transmission lines. The measured impedance at the relay location when a fault occurs on the line is determined by using voltage and current signals from voltage and current transformers at the relay and the type of fault occurred on the line. The MHO characteristic is applied to analyze impact of SVC on the distance protection relay. Based on the theory, the authors in this paper develop a simulation program on Matlab/Simulink software to analyze impact of SVC on the distance protection relay. In the power system model, it is supposed that the SVC is located at mid-point of the transmission line to study impact of SVC on the distance relay. The simulation results show that SVC will impact on the measured impedance at the relay when the fault occurs after the location of the SVC on the power transmission line.</p>

Resumen
The limit state function (LSF) is implicit to many structure reliability analysis problems, which may make some classical reliability method complicated to be applied. One of the surrogate methods-support vector classification (SVC) was applied in the structural reliability analysis herein which has not been applied to structure reliability analysis until recent years. Then the advanced first order second moment method (AFOSM) can be applied. The expressions of structure system reliability sensitivity to basic variable were deduced. The flow of how to call the SVC program was presented. An example was shown to compare the SVC based method with some other classical reliability analysis methods. The results are accurately accepted and the advantages of SVC are analyzed.

Resumen
Spring viremia of carp (SVC) is a disease caused by a virus belonging to the genus Vesiculovirus, family Rhabdoviridae. The SVC virus is divided into four genogroups, Ia, Ib, Ic, and Id, due to its geographical distribution. This study aimed to identify the genotype of the SVC virus circulating in Poland. Polish SVC virus isolates were propagated on EPC and FHM cell lines, and genetic material (RNA) was isolated. The virus was detected in test samples by reverse transcription, sequenced and analyzed using MEGA 6.06 software. The phylogenetic tree was constructed by the Neighbor-Joining method. The results of phylogenetic analysis revealed the presence of two genogroups of the SVC virus in Poland. Most of Polish isolates belonged to the genogroup Id, as do isolates AY196200 from the Czech Republic, Z37505 from Belgium and EF593149 from the United States. Only two Polish isolates from Silesian Voivodeship were more closely related to Chinese and US isolates belonging to the genogroup Ia. There were no isolates belonging to the genogroups Ib and Ic. Nucleotide sequence analysis revealed certain point mutations between particular isolates. Knowledge on the genetic variants of the SVC virus circulating in Poland will be useful in epizootic investigations and preventive measures to protect Polish aquaculture from new variants from the neighboring countries

Variability in power systems is increasing due to pushing the system to limits for economic purposes, the inclusion of new energy sources like wind turbines and photovoltaic, and the introduction of new types of loads such as electric vehicle chargers. In this new environment, system monitoring and control must keep pace to insure system stability and reliability on a wide area scale. Phasor measurement unit technology implementation is growing and can be used to provide input signals to new types of control. Fuzzy logic based power system stabilizer (PSS) controllers have also been shown effective in various studies. This thesis considers several choices of input signals, composed assuming phasor measurement availability, for fuzzy logic-based controllers. The purpose of the controller is to damp power systems’ low frequency oscillations. Nonlinear transient simulation results for a 4-machine two-area system and 50 machine system are used to compare the effects of input choice and controller type on damping of system oscillations. Reactive power in the system affects voltage, which in turn affects system damping and dynamic stability. System stability and damping can be enhanced by deploying SVC controllers properly. Different types of power system variables play critical role to damp power swings using SVC controller. A fuzzy logic based static var compensator (SVC) was used near a generator to damp these electromechanical oscillations using different PMU-acquired inputs. The goal was again improve dynamic stability and damping performance of the system at local and global level. Nonlinear simulations were run to compare the damping performance of different inputs on the 50 machine system.

SiC/SiC composites including the third generation SiC fibers with pyrocarbon interphase (PyC) are promising candidates to improve the safety of nuclear reactors, especially for core materials such as cladding and to replace metallic alloys for these applications. Their intrinsic refractory properties, their neutron transparency and their microstructural stability when irradiated or exposed to high temperatures make them attractive for nuclear applications. However SiC fibers and SiC matrix are brittle ceramics. The integrity of the structures can be fulfilled only if the composite is damage tolerant and can acquire a pseudo-ductile mechanical behavior. An interphase is deposited between the fibers and the matrix to provide this damage tolerance of SiC/SiC composites. The ability of SiC/SiC composites to sustain damage is dictated by the fiber/matrix (F/M) coupling mode. The intensity of this coupling can be related to many parameters such as the roughness and the chemistry of the surface of the reinforcement. A carbon layer on the fiberssurface was highlighted by High Resolution Transmission Electronic Microscopy (HRTEM) and by physico-chemical analyses. The characteristics of this carbon layer vary with the fabrication process of the fibers. The impact of this carbon layer on the F/M coupling was investigated by the observation of the local damage mechanisms. To elucidate the local bonding modes governing the damage mechanisms at the F/M interface of these SiC/SiC composites, macroscopic mechanical tests have been coupled with observations of structural modifications occurring in the interface region after loading. Understanding the origin of this carbon layer allowed elucidating the local interaction mechanisms according to these studied materials. These mechanisms depend on the carbon structure of the SiC fibers surface which in turn governs the adhesion between this carbon and the PyC interphase. Thanks to this study, a surface treatment on fibers was developed to optimize the mechanical behavior of SiC/SiC composites, whatever the fibrous reinforcement chosen

Roots: They take hold; they grow, expand and change, creating networks and sub-networks as they start to break above the earth's surface and stretch up higher towards the sky day by day. Roots can be taken out (the stock, stem or trunk removed), but both the memory and the evidence of the roots' existence will continue to remain for a while to come. The idea of "roots" applies to so much: from artists taking inspiration from previous artists, even at times to mirror the change in the world which one artist had previously documented; from the places we establish our families and create our memories, to a good deal more.

Resumen
This thesis provides insight into state-of-the-art 1.2 kV silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor transistors, including the MOSFET, BJT, SJT, and normally-on and normally-off JFETs. Both commercial and sample devices from the semiconductor industry's well-known manufacturers were evaluated in this study. These manufacturers include: Cree Inc., ROHM Semiconductor, General Electric, Fairchild Semiconductor, GeneSiC Semiconductor, Infineon Technologies, and SemiSouth Laboratories. To carry out this work, static characterization of each device was performed from 25 ºC to 200 ºC. Dynamic characterization was also conducted through double-pulse tests. Accordingly, this thesis describes the experimental setup used and the different measurements conducted, which comprise: threshold voltage, transconductance, current gain, specific on-resistance, parasitic capacitances, internal gate resistance, and the turn on and turn off switching times and energies. For the latter, the driving method used for each device is described in detail. Furthermore, for the devices that require on-state dc currents, driving losses are taken into consideration. While all of the SiC transistors characterized in this thesis demonstrated low specific on-resistances, the SiC BJT showed the lowest, with Fairchild's FSICBH057A120 SiC BJT having 3.6 mΩ•cm2 (using die area) at 25 ºC. However, the on-resistance of GE's SiC MOSFET proved to have the smallest temperature dependency, increasing by only 59 % from 25 ºC to 200 ºC. From the dynamic characterization, it was shown that Cree's C2M0080120D second generation SiC MOSFET achieved dv/dt rates of 57 V/ns. The SiC MOSFETs also featured low turn off switching energy losses, which were typically less than 70 µJ at 600 V bus voltage and 20 A load current.

Texto completo
This thesis studies the modeling and analysis of power System containing static VAR compensators (SVC). Low-order models, calculated by Hankel singular-value truncation réduction and N4Sid dynamic identification, provide the foundation for the modeling and analysis techniques. For cases where many SVCs or FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) devices are installed in a power System, a new subsystem structure based on thèse low-order modeling techniques has been developed. The proposed low-order models allow the computation of low-order LQG-type (Linear Quadratic Gaussian Regulator) control laws, as well as low-order robust controls, which provide a better performance relative to traditional SVC controls (proportional type). Using the subsystem structure formulated in this thesis, methods for calculating decentralized controllers for power Systems hâve been conceived. In addition, through the use of structured singular values, a new robustness analysis technique has been developed which allows the détermination of stability boundaries through the calculation of closed-loop transfer functions. The theoretical approaches in this work hâve been applied to a test power system containing 11 nodes, as well as a larger 173-node test system

Resumen
A study into the factors that affect power in an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) design were examined. Four factors - sample size, significance level, dependent variable-covariate correlations and homogeneity of regression - were varied in a population study. Results indicate that power increased when the dependent variable-covariate correlations increased and when sample size increased. Power also increased when a less stringent alpha level was used. Homogeneity of regression did not effect power. Implications and recommendations for the applied researcher are discussed.

Conducting Surveys of Enacted Curriculum Studies in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Toolkit for Policymakers, Researchers, and Education Practitioners. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), marzo de 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-misc_2023/13.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) approach is used to analyse and report on the academic content embedded in education instructional components such as curriculum standards, assessments, and teachers' classroom instruction. Through a partnership between the RISE Programme and the Center for Curriculum Analysis, the approach has been used to analyse educational alignment in low- and middle-income country education systems, including in Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda. The SEC approach has many applications including content and alignment analysis for curriculum standards, assessments, and instructional materials; curriculum reform design and implementation support; and teacher professional development and support. This document provides a comprehensive toolkit for conducting an SEC study in LMICs. Following the introduction and background, Section 2 gives an overview of the SEC approach and provides a brief description of sequential steps involved in conducting an SEC study: (i) generating data; (ii) inputting data; (iii) processing and analysing data; and (iv) interpretating results. Section 3 then gives detailed, step-by-step instructions for implementing an SEC study. Section 4 shares lessons learned from conducting SEC studies in LMICs. The document then closes with an Appendix that provides a detailed overview of the SEC tools and other resources provided with this toolkit. These appendices [.zip] are available for download.

Hair. L52003 Application of the Crack Layer Theory for Understanding and Modeling of SCC in High Pressure. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), agosto de 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010893.

Texto completo
Resumen
A stochastic features of SCC colony, such as corrosion pit distribution, SC crack initiation from the pits and SC crack aspect ratio, SC crack cluster formation, SC cluster interaction and instability, are observed and characterized. A concept of a single crack equivalent to a cluster of cracks is introduced to simplify computational work on clusters evolution and instability. Various criteria of equivalence for different stages of clusters evolution are discussed. An accelerated test with a number of accelerating factors has been designed and performed for simulation of individual SC crack growth. Corrosion products at each stage of single crack propagation are investigated by means of Raman and FTIR analysis. The crack layer theory is adopted for modeling of SC crack growth. It provides the formalism for modeling of the effect of such processes as electro-chemical reactions, hydrogen embrittlement, and mechanical loading rates on crack growth rate. Finally, a computer simulation of SC crack growth was performed and validated by the available set of experimental data.

Beavers. L51897 Cathodic Protection Conditions Conducive to SCC. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), octubre de 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010193.

Texto completo
Resumen
The objective of this research project was to define pipeline conditions where use of the 100 mV polarization criterion may be conducive to possible SCC problems. Each of the controlling conditions for the two recognized forms of SCC (high pH SCC and near neutral pH SCC) was examined, using a combination of analysis of previous research results, analysis of unpublished field data, and laboratory testing. In the original proposal, it was not planned to analyze field data but the data became available and the analysis has yielded some significant findings. The results of the literature survey, the analysis of the soil and electrolyte data from the SCC field digs, and the testing performed in this project all indicate that cathodic protection is generally beneficial in mitigating near-neutral pH SCC. Furthermore, the only testing reported in the literature, which suggests that cathodic protection is detrimental to this form of cracking, was performed under unrealistic conditions where cathodic polarization was applied to pipe steel samples containing growing cracks, but the beneficial environmental polarization that accompanies cathodic protection was not allowed to occur. One conclusion from this current research is that it is not necessary to consider the near neutral pH form of cracking in the selection of the CP criterion.
