This thesis gives an account of the building up of a thesaurus of literary terms for the indexing of the french literary works listed in the literature data bank, worked out at the Paris III-Sorbonne nouvelle university. The aim has been to give a fair representation of the contents of literary texts in the french language, using the received terminology. The thesaurus, in accordance with the norms of information retrieval, distributes the vocabulary into allowed and not allowed terms. A first version was used for the indexation, by students, of 1500 works. The results of that first phase were then used in their turn for the improvement of the thesaurus, the themes’ list and its structure. It now has the form of a non hierarchical semantic network. Besides, a number of tests in automatic indexation have shown that computer-aided thematic indexation, based on abstracts, is worth considering. Statistical studies prefigure the kind of literary studies that a thematic data base would allow. Such studies would bear on the correlations between themes and movements, epochs, genres, etc. .

There is around 1980 that the postmodern theater appears in Quebec. Many new writers as Normand Chaurette, Carole Fréchette and Larry Tremblay created new theatrical writings that have wondered about to challenge the traditional theatrical aesthetics. On refusing the different forms of the traditional theatrical playwriting as the concept of outcome including the final solution of the story and the logical argument of action, they invented new texts that are extremely difficult to understand. Sometimes considered unreadable and difficult to play, parts of Chauray, Frechette and Tremblay, who are known as well in Québec as abroad, can't stopped throwing a challenge to the theater's directors who were not able to understand the enigmatic universe of these three authors atypical. Is it finally a complex theater? What are the characteristics of this theater called new and original? Would it be a drama bomb? These are different questions that we will try to discover troughout this study financed by the Regional Council

This dissertation focuses on the paternel concept in french contemporary literature. After a cursory historical and linguistic study, first six works from Colette, Duhamel, Gide, Gyp, Martin du Gard and Mauriac, published between 1924 and 1945 are examined. It exudes a portrait of the father in his relationship to his children by means of terms related to pere and associated predicates. Second, the same research was undertaken, this time on works from A. Ernaux, A. Robbe-Grillet J. M. Roberts, N. Sarraute, J. P. Sartre, O. Todd et M. Yourcenar, published between 1964 and 1985. This study enables one to witness the slow evolution on the paternel image, but not so clear in literature than in everyday life

As a dancer researcher, my point of departure is to comprehend Pina Bausch’s move and dancing corporeality in order to define the founding elements of her style. To improve my focus on the move I work on the figure of the choreographic “solo”.The first part of the thesis realizes firstly the biographical path and the source of Pina Bausch moves dating back to her training within Folkawangschule in Essen, from 1955 to 1960, and in New York, from 1960 to 1962, within Julliard School. In a second chapter, I propose a periodization of her work starting after she took charge of Tanztheater Wuppertal in 1973.In the second part, I analyze the only two soli dances by Pina Bausch with her company – Café Muller (1978) and Danzón (1995) – and in the third part, three soli dances by her interpreters , in : The Rite of Spring (1975), Nelken (1982), and ‘…como el musguito en la piedra ay si, si, si…’ (2009).From this, among all the elements of this dancing corporeality, emerges the question of solitude that problematizes the notions of solo, solitude, loneliness and being together in dance. Namely, how do “dancing-all-alone” and “dancing-together” become the possibilities to inhabit the scenic space beyond the number of interpreters on stage ? Under what condition, do Pina Bausch’s notion of solitude constitute not only a “topic” to explain her pieces but a sort of founding corporeality to her dance ? What are the particularities of her style that reside equally in Pina Bausch’s corporeality – as a dancer – and in each of her interpreters ?

In the context of the economic globalization, many enterprises search through internationalization to improve their competitiveness. All internationalization process implies an organizational change, both in the headquarters and in the “new” operations abroad, and the necessity to manage some paradoxes. In order to coordinate the organizational change process, to install the strategy and to guarantee the know-how transfer, companies normally send abroad people from the headquarters – the expatriates- with the role of “change agents”. Based on a case study of the internationalization of a large Brazilian enterprise towards North America, our research interest is to understand how the ability of the expatriates to manage paradoxes helps companies succeed in their internationalization process

Our thesis focuses on the decision to dissolve a job match and its consequences. First, a theoretical and econometric model of the worker decision to leave his job is developed and estimated on german panel data (german socio-economic panel, 19841994). In this model, the worker mobility desire depends on his expressed job satisfaction and his past and present pecuniary and non-pecuniary job attributes. The worker's mobility desire is then estimated as the residual of a job satisfaction equation and used to predict his quit decision. The empirical evidence of the relationship between quit and job mobility desire allows to confirm job satisfaction model and the standard microeconomic mobility decision interpretation. Second, job mobility effects on wages have first been estimated on french retrospective data (enquete carriere, insee, 1989). Next, an original measure of job mobility effects on wages is proposed and estimated on german and american panel data (german socio-economic panel and national longitudinal survey of youth 1984-1993). We compare the quality of successive job matches. We retain a wage model in which error term is decomposed in three components : a fixed individual specific error term, a fixed job match specific error term and a random effect. Second, the quality of the job match is given by the estimated fixed job match specific error term. If the quality of the new job match or if the average quality of the new and the following job matches are better than the quality of the previous job, mobility enables the worker's transition to better jobs, then, job mobility effects on wages are positive

In this thesis, we designed a simulation platform to compare and evaluate production planning and order management strategies for lumber production in North American sawmills. In our context, a strategy is composed of several parameters such as the choice of order acceptance policies, allowing to accept or refuse an order based on implemented rules, the choice of planning models and algorithms used at each stage of timber production, the choice of model at the tactical level, the coordination mechanisms used, to better coordinate the operations of several distinct entities or of several planning levels; this includes the exchange of information between tactical and operational planning levels or between entities / models used at the operational level to plan timber production. Today, it is extremely difficult for a company to know which management strategy to put in place. The general objective is then to evaluate and compare tactical and operational planning strategies for timber production, taking into account the company's market context and its production parameters. To achieve this goal, we divided it into four specific objectives that resulted in three publications. In the first specific objective, we developed a simulation model to represent the generation, acceptance and sale of an order for a sawmill. We coupled a production planning module to this simulation model that is responsible for inventory management and the generation of production plans. In a second objective, we use this simulation model to be able to evaluate the impact of order acceptance policies such as Available-to-promise (ATP), Capable-to-promise (CTP) and Stock policies on the company’s performance in terms of volume of accepted orders in a product flow environment diverge with co-production. Although these order acceptance policies have been widely studied in a traditional manufacturing context, the choice of one policy over another is far from being trivial in such a context of divergence flow. We show that in this type of context, the choice of an order acceptance policy rather than another depends strongly on the market and impacts the performance of the company, in terms of accepted orders and average annual inventory. This specific objective leads to the first publication. In a third specific objective, we evaluated coordination mechanisms used at the operational level between the different activities of the timber processing process, which is a decentralized process. The previous simulation platform has been adapted and previously published coordination mechanisms such as "Two-phase planning" or "bottleneck-first planning" are evaluated using a rolling horizon in an environment where orders are generated dynamically. We show that coordination mechanisms already published and tested in a static environment perform poorly in a dynamic environment. We therefore propose another "hybrid push / pull" coordination mechanism exploiting the decoupling point concept. This mechanism is better than the previous ones by allowing a greater number of sales, as well as a reduction in average inventory. This specific objective leads to a second publication. Finally, in a fourth specific objective, we are interested in production planning at the tactical and operational levels. We use the simulation model to compare and evaluate different information transmitted from the tactical level to the operational level by simulating the production system, the planning process and the market behavior. The tactical planning level is then taken into account to establish longer-term production planning. We show that the choice of the type of information to be transmitted from the tactical level to the operational level varies according to several factors, such as: the order acceptance policy (ATP, CTP) used by the company, the extent of seasonality selling prices, or whether or not being in an overcapacity market. This specific objective leads to third publication

The rate of unemployment for handicapped people is superior to the national average, because the rate of 6% employment of handicapped workers, either in public enterprises, or in private enterprises, is note reached. We have elaborated a field survey. We choose 19 persons who know the difficulties that meet the handicapped workers (10 workers with university qualifications and 9 associations members) Consequently, the deficiency and the difficulties of accessibility always remain a major problem of access to the employment of handicapped people and economic and social change has favored the marginalization of handicapped people in France and in Europe. So, handicapped people will be judged through their deficiencies of accessing employment more than for their professional skills. That will have some negative repercussions on handicapped labour. This analysis allows estimating the potential energy of each handicapped person. The handicap person thus has an influence on the professional future of the people declared handicapped because of the bad opinion of society. Faced with the unique market of employment of handicapped people in the countries of the European Union, the leaders of these countries judge that it is necessary to expand the employability of handicapped people in the others countries, taking in consideration the French model. Besides, several treaties have been brought into play. Unfortunately, in the 27 States of Europe, handicapped haven’t found their place because the way of living of the citizens of the European community is at the low end of the scale

Contracts for making a work available online can be a sale – rental, service, copyright or sui generis agreement. This lack of uniformity is the result of the various ways a work can be exploited on the digital networks. Next to the traditional business models such as sale – rental or sale of copies or services, copyright owners can now base their revenue on consumers' restricted acts – "from having copies to experiencing works". When a work is copyrighted, the transaction is a copyright contract. When there is no such protection, it is a sui generis contract. The control over consumer's acts of access and or use of the work is based on the contractual provisions and technical measures. Choice of law analysis varies from contract to contract. Regarding contract-conflicts regime, choice of law rules will have different sources. For example, The Hague Convention on the sale of tangible goods may apply to online sale of copies while copyright contract falls outside its scope of application. Regarding copyright-conflicts regime, we are trying to define one single choice of law rule fo all copyright issues that combines the traditional lex loci protectionis with the new emerging concept of "focalization". There are two mechanisms to coordinate copyright-conflicts and contract-conflicts regimes. Characterization is the primary tool in France while unilateral (public policy also known as mandatory rules) approach is more used in the USA. Here, we argue that national copyright laws may become mandatory if one considers that contracts for making a work available is the cornerstone of private ordering

Theorists and practitioners of contemporary dance frequently use the Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy. However, this philosopher has never used dance as an object of thought. In order to assess the relevance and the fertility, and to clarify the terms of this paradoxical encounter, this research examines descriptions of choreographic called contemporary. It has resulted in the following thesis: not only the Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy is an effective support to think contemporary dance but this confrontation is also illuminating for reading and understanding texts of the phenomenologist. This work has effectively highlighted the pivotal function of the Merleau-Ponty’s notion of the “porte-à-faux”, slightly noticed and commented on so far

The non-destructive study of wood from X-Ray CT scanners requires to imagine new solutions adapted to analysis of images. Relating both agronomic research and industrial sector of sawmills, segmentation of wood knots is a major challenge in terms of robustness to specificities of each species and to image acquisition conditions. The works carried out in this thesis allow to propose a segmentation process in two phases. It first isolates each knot in a reduced area then it segments the unique knot of each area. Proposed solutions for each phase allow to integrate knowledges about internal organization of trunk and mechanisms inherent to its growth, through classical tools of image analysis and processing. The first phase is essentially based on a movement detection principle borrowed from video analysis and revisited. Two segmentation approaches are then proposed, considering for one the initial CT slices and for the other news slices resampled for each knot orthogonally to its trajectory. The complete process has been implemented in a software dedicated both for experimentation and validation of approach, and to interdisciplinary dialogs. The applicative support of wood emphasizes the specialization abilities of generic image analysis and processing algorithms, and the relevance to integrate priori knowledges in this perspective

The emergence of flexibility and the shifts in patterns of employment in French and British industrial societies since the 1970s have been thoroughly investigated and commented. Public employment - considered as a predominant branch of activity and the employer of a large share of the total workforce in service sector based economies - and the regimes of mobilisation have, on the contrary, hardly been analysed at all. Within the field of local public services, administered and managed by local councils in Britain, the example of the teaching workforce will enable us to examine the patterns of flexible working in the context of liberal dogmas advocating economic deregulation. We shall then relate labour market theories and inherent flexibilisation mechanisms on the one hand, and the introduction of market-oriented rationales and the tenets of new public management within the public sector on the other. Our contention is to combine points of views within a pluridisciplinary approach. However marked, scientific and epistemological barriers of connected disciplines (such as political and social sciences, anthropology, economy, the sociology industrial relations, etc. ) will be tentatively eclipsed so that we can benefit from the most relevant concepts and analytical tools. We aim at integrating these theoretical tools within the framework of a multidisciplinary reflection

This thesis focuses on French Cooperative and Participative firms (SCOP). Through the observation of this model, it offers an extensive analysis of inequality at work within firms, concentrating on wage inequality and sharing of adjustment costs. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter compares wage distribution in SCOPs and conventional firms (CFs) by estimating wage equations based on the DADS dataset. The second chapter offers a detailed analysis of 53 workers’ interviews, conducted in 38 SCOPs in the Rhône-Alpes region. The principles of justice at work in the determination of the wage structures described in chapter one are identified. The third chapter is an econometric comparison of adjustments to demand shocks in SCOPs and CFs, involving employment flexibility as well as hour and wage flexibility. The fourth chapter explores the diversity among SCOPs, especially in access to membership and its consequences on employment adjustments. The contribution of this thesis to the debate in economics can be summarised with three points. Firstly it is the first large comparative quantitative analysis of SCOPs and CFs regarding employment and its characteristics. Secondly, the qualitative survey we use, produced with colleagues from Grenoble University, is also unique in terms of size and content. Its exploitation makes the analysis of workers’ rhetoric on equality possible. Finally, our method is original: we adopt approaches that are usually opposed and use them in unison to enrich the understanding of our subject

Managers who commute internationally represent an emerging category of personnel. During their international missions, they commute weekly between their headquarters and other worldwide locations. They are neither expatriates, nor sedentary managers. Who exactly are they? What organizational policies and procedures have been implemented to manage and help them? Are their difficulties known and recognized? So many questions that the literature has not yet addressed, whereas the use of shortterm international mobility has increased by 10% since 2002 and a further mobility intensification is foreseen? in the next five years (20% increase). Following an exploratory objective, our research focused on the characterization of the managers who commute internationally and their relationship with the workplace. We utilized several methods (qualitative and quantitative methods, use of the diary study) and complementary theoretical frameworks (Job-Demands – Resources Model (Demerouti and al., 2001) and Psychological Contract (Rousseau, 1989)). Our work consisted of three studies. The first quantitative study (1.841 participants), lead through a partnership with APEC, examined the contours and characteristics of the managers who commute internationally, highlighting the similarity of their level of exhaustion and emotional well-being with that of national commuters and sedentary managers. It confirmed that this category of personnel, more diversified than the expatriates, more feminized, experts as well as managerial profiles, was characterized by a specific behavior. Through the collection of life stories (1 0 participants), the second study defined the psychological contract of the managers who commute internationally: those that sacrificed their time, to the detriment of their private life, in exchange of professional career and enrichment. Conflicts between private and professional life emerged when the international commuting threatened the family well-being; in this situation, spousal support was considered a primary resource. The third study (30participants), a diary study, highlighted the importance of certain resources to manage daily this kind of mobility: professional opportunities, development and psychological detachment limited the burnout level during the mission. Finally, recommendations were addressed in order to improve the organizational valorization of the managers who commute internationally. Indeed, these later are the intermediary between the headquarters and the subsidiaries of multinationals, they diffuse the organizational information and culture. They represent a fundamental intangible value that the organization has to care of

The restructuring of complex organizations, such as those of health facilities, is strongly influenced by recent economic, technological and regulatory changes. To understand the impact of these restructuring movements, one must analyze the changes affecting the various hierarchical levels of the healthcare organization. Under the French socio-economic context, healthcare institutions are currently undergoing multiple strategic and operational transformations, which requires professionals to adapt their skills and capabilities accordingly. In fact, the impact of medical, technical and digital innovations is driving the concerned structures to emphasize value in their adaptations. For a successful implementation, it is necessary that concerned parties intervene. These latters are then encouraged to focus on updating the organization's strategy, improving human resources development and adjusting necessary patterns and processes. Therefore, this research relies on analyzing organizational performance from a strategic alignment perspective. We aim to examine the managerial expectations of a study sample of managers, professionals, and staff in a French hospital which are undergoing full reconstruction. The results of this qualitative study show the difficulty of managers to implement a successful patient pathway process. It also shows that technological transformations can be used to ensure a very high organizational performance allowing people to take advantage of various intelligent services

The bending and tensile strengths of timber can be reduced by the presence of heterogeneities. The knots and the local slope of grain in the surrounding area are the most relevant. Nowadays, the effect of knots reduces the stiffness and the strength of structural elements. The Timber grading is not optimized and does not promote the strongest beams for a timber engineering use. The goal of this study is to evaluate the influence of knots on the bending strength of beams in Maritime Pine, order to improve their timber grading. This work is focused on a database, which takes into account the mechanical and the physical properties of beams and specific geometrical parameters relative to knots detected in elements. Several statistical tools like neural networks are used to define the explanatory variables and their predictive powers of the bending strength. From these analyses, it is shown that some variables characterizing the knots are pertinent and allow the improvement of the prediction of the strength. To justify the presence of these variables in the predictive equations, finite element simulations of single knot are proposed. These numerical computations associated to a fracture criterion allow the establishment of strength performance curves due to the presence of knot in an elementary loaded volume (tension and bending configurations). These numerical data are compared to the experimental results in the aim to verify the reliability of the finite element approach

Bridging work and organization studies, the dissertation analyzes changing workforce in the workplace due to the rising use of nonstandard arrangements. Previous research shows that the current organizational theory is based on inadequate conceptions of work inherited from industrial era. Today, the use of nonstandard work arrangements is very common. This leads to a blend of regular workers and nonstandard workers in the same work situation. As individuals don’t formulate the blending way of performing activities, we observe that a collective action remains possible even if the workers' legal statuses are different. As a consequence, a direct observation is needed to sort out the issue of the collaboration of regular workers and nonstandard workers in a firm’s workplace in order to understand how collective action happens. The “composite team” expression could describe this kind of collective action occurring in a specific organization involving people whose statuses differ. The firm does not disappear by integrating people from other organizations; it acts as an integrator of modular units composed by a composite team. The individuals play a role beyond their legal status in the workplace, depending on a repertoire built from professional experience

This thesis is the outcome of five years of doctoral studies at the University of Montreal. It presents the theory behind a cycle of eleven autonomous narrative instrumental pieces, following the definition of cycle as defined by researcher Anne Besson in her book “D’Asimov à Tolkien : cycles et séries dans la littérature de genre.” The goal was to create a coherent and unified fictional universe that explores the concept of narrative chronology in music. The pieces were composed in a different order than the one in which the events of the story occur. It allows us to explore the idea of prequel and sequel in music. Originally composed for the concert hall, for ensembles ranging from chamber music to symphonic orchestras, they were afterwards adapted to be recorded and edited in a studio, allowing the composer to explore an array of new compositional techniques. Presenting many theoretical concepts such as narrativity (in general and pertaining specifically to music), the cyclic concept in a body of works and also the definition of a fictional universe, this thesis will analyze these eleven works while suggesting possible solutions for bringing processes that occur frequently in literature and film to the world of music.

This research paper examines literary reading in the context of primary education and focuses specifically on picturebooks that foster the development of interpretive skills. It gives an account of research and development in which we pursued three objectives. The first objective was to develop a tool to analyse the narrative processes of picturebooks and identify elements conducive to interpretive work; the second aimed to test the analysis tool in order to measure its reliability and validity; and the final objective was to use the tool we developed to put together a collection of Quebec children’s books that favour the development of interpretive skills in primary students. To achieve these three objectives, we adopted a methodology that enabled us to first analyse the needs, namely the users and purposes of the analysis tool, and then to design and develop an initial version. This version was tested with experts to determine its validity. A second version was then produced and its reliability was evaluated using encoders. Lastly, a third and forth version was produced to assemble a collection of Quebec picturebooks conducive to interpretive work. Although our test did not allow us to draw an altogether satisfactory conclusion about the objectivity of the indicators of our analysis tool, an analysis of comments by the experts confirms that the indicators of our analysis tool are highly relevant, which suggests that the tool we developed and the collection of 15 Quebec picturebooks that favour the development of interpretive skills in primary students we assembled may be important and useful tools within a school environment.
