AbstractWe consider the surface obtained from the projective plane by blowing up the points of intersection of two plane curves meeting transversely. We find minimal generating sets of the defining ideals of these surfaces embedded in projective space by the sections of a very ample divisor class. Let $f : X \to S$ be a family of smooth projective algebraic varieties over a smooth connected quasi-projective base $S$ , and let $\mathbb {V} = R^{2k} f_{*} \mathbb {Z}(k)$ be the integral variation of Hodge structure coming from degree $2k$ cohomology it induces. Associated to $\mathbb {V}$ one has the so-called Hodge locus $\textrm {HL}(S) \subset S$ , which is a countable union of ‘special’ algebraic subvarieties of $S$ parametrizing those fibres of $\mathbb {V}$ possessing extra Hodge tensors (and so, conjecturally, those fibres of $f$ possessing extra algebraic cycles). The special subvarieties belong to a larger class of so-called weakly special subvarieties, which are subvarieties of $S$ maximal for their algebraic monodromy groups. For each positive integer $d$ , we give an algorithm to compute the set of all weakly special subvarieties $Z \subset S$ of degree at most $d$ (with the degree taken relative to a choice of projective compactification $S \subset \overline {S}$ and very ample line bundle $\mathcal {L}$ on $\overline {S}$ ). As a corollary of our algorithm we prove conjectures of Daw–Ren and Daw–Javanpeykar–Kühne on the finiteness of sets of special and weakly special subvarieties of bounded degree.

‘Statius’Thebaid’, someone donnishly quipped, ‘has no sufficient reason to exist.’ Kyle Gervais might beg to differ. Like theThebaiditself, his commentary on Book 2 has grown over many years, and deserves to be taken very seriously. The crisp introduction sets the tone and clearly signals priorities in its four sections, a rising tetracolon for author, problems of editing, intratexts, and intertexts; not a word on style and prosody, and reception is excluded on the ground that Statius’ ownimitatiois quite enough to be getting on with. The text is newly constituted, with ample apparatus and text-critical discussion: Gervais joins Barrie Hall's rebellion against the bifid stemma, but fairly questions his view that theThebaidshould be easy reading; he accordingly diverges from his edition nearly a hundred times, and offers a translation which, if less old-falutin’ than Shack's Loeb, does an equally good job of disabusing anyone who thought it would be quicker to read Statius in English. The notes are full and rich: words aren't wasted, but both philological graft and literary interpretation amply attest to fine scholarship, good sense, and long thought.

It is not known if a commutative, topologically simple, radical Banach algebra exists. If, however, every derivation on such an algebra is continuous, this yields the automatic continuity of all derivations on commutative, semiprime Banach algebras. Utilising techniques used by Thomas in his proof of the Singer-Wermer conjecture, we show that, if A is a commutative, topologically simple Banach algebra with a non-zero derivation on it, then a quotient of a certain localisation of A has a power series structure. A pivotal role is played by what we call ample sets of denominators.

AbstractWe give an explicit description of the free objects in the quasivariety of adequate semigroups, as sets of labelled directed trees under a natural combinatorial multiplication. The morphisms of the free adequate semigroup onto the free ample semigroup and into the free inverse semigroup are realised by a combinatorial ‘folding’ operation which transforms our trees into Munn trees. We use these results to show that free adequate semigroups and monoids are 𝒥-trivial and never finitely generated as semigroups, and that those which are finitely generated as (2,1,1)-algebras have decidable word problem.

Research was conducted to determine the utility of a single, temperature-independent Weibull function for describing cumulative seed germination under several temperature regimes with 14 sets of weed and crop seed germination data. A modified cumulative Weibull function was derived to distribute germination times for individuals within the population and distributed the occurrence of germination given ample sample size and appropriate sample interval. The descriptive and predictive attributes of the stochastic model component are well suited for incorporation into seed germination models and are likely applicable to models to predict distribution of times for other developmental processes of plants.

This paper describes the application of two evolutionary algorithms to the feedforward neural networks used in classification problems. Besides of a simple backpropagation feedforward algorithm, the paper considers the genetic algorithm and random search algorithm. The objective is to analyze the performance of GAs over the simple backpropagation feedforward in terms of accuracy or speed in this problem. The experiments considered a feedforward neural network trained with genetic algorithm/random search algorithm and 39 types of network structures and artificial data sets. In most cases, the evolutionary feedforward neural networks seemed to have better of equal accuracy than the original backpropagation feedforward neural network. We found few differences in the accuracy of the networks solved by applying the EAs, but found ample differences in the execution time. The results suggest that the evolutionary feedforward neural network with random search algorithm might be the best algorithm on the data sets we tested.

Les sous-graphes isométriques d'hypercubes (dit cubes partiels) constituent une classe centrale de la théorie métrique des graphes. Ils englobent des familles de graphes importantes (arbres, graphes médians, etc.), provenant de différents domaines de recherche, tels que la géométrie discrète, la combinatoire ou la théorie géométrique des groupes. Nous étudions tout d'abord la structure des cubes partiels de VC-dimension 2. Nous montrons que ces graphes peuvent être obtenus par amalgamations à partir de deux types de cellules combinatoires.Cette décomposition nous permet d’obtenir diverses caractérisations. En particulier, tout cube partiel de VC-dimension 2 peut être complété en cube partiel ample de VC-dimension 2. Nous montrons ensuite que les graphes de topes des matroïdes orientés et des complexes de matroïdes orientés uniformes peuvent aussi être complétés en cubes partiels amples de même VC-dimension.En utilisant un résultat de Moran et Warmuth, nous établissons que ces classes vérifient la conjecture de Floyd et Warmuth, l'une des plus vielles conjectures en théorie de l'apprentissage. C'est-à-dire qu'elles admettent des schémas de compression (étiquetés non propres) de taille leur VC-dimension.Par la suite, nous décrivons un schéma de compression étiqueté propre de taille d pour les complexes de matroïdes orientés de VC-dimension d, généralisant ainsi le résultat de Moran et Warmuth pour les amples. They comprise many important graph classes (trees, median graphs, tope graphs of complexes of oriented matroids, etc.), arising from different areas of research such as discrete geometry, combinatorics or geometric group theory.First, we investigate the structure of partial cubes of VC-dimension 2. We show that those graphs can be obtained via amalgams from even cycles and full subdivisions of complete graphs. This decomposition allows us to obtain various characterizations. In particular, any partial cube can be completed to an ample partial cube of VC-dimension 2. Then, we show that the tope graphs of oriented matroids and complexes of uniform oriented matroids can also be completed to ample partial cubes of the same VC-dimension.Using a result of Moran and Warmuth, we establish that those classes satisfy the conjecture of Floyd and Warmuth, one of the oldest open problems in computational machine learning. Particularly, they admit (improper labeled) compression schemes of size their VC-dimension.Next, we describe a proper labeled compression scheme of size d for complexes of oriented matroids of VC-dimension d, generalizing the result of Moran and Warmuth for ample sets. Nous étudions différentes propriétés d'hyperbolicité pour les variétés intersection complète. Étant donnée une variété intersection complète lisse X ⊂ M dans une variété projective complexe lisse, nous démontrons que si k est plus grand que dim X/ codimM X et si le multidegré de X est suffisamment grand alors il existe sur X des équations différentielles de jets d'ordre k et de degré m pour m suffisamment grand. Ensuite nous étudions une conjecture de O. Debarre : si X ⊂ P^N est l'intersection d'au moins N/2 hypersurfaces génériques de degré suffisamment grand, alors le fibré cotangent de X est ample. Nous donnons différents résultats partiels en direction de cette conjecture. Nous démontrons que si X vérifie les hypothèses de la conjecture alors X est hyperbolique et le fibré cotangent de X est numériquement positif, gros, et ample en dehors d'un lieu de codimension au moins 2. Nous donnons ensuite une stratégie pour calculer explicitement des formes différentielles symétriques sur des variétés intersection complète particulières. Enfin, nous démontrons un théorème d'annulation pour la cohomologie des fibrés de différentielles de jets de Green-Griffiths, généralisant ainsi un théorème de Schneider et un théorème de Diverio. Pour finir, nous étudions la cohomologie des fibrés en droites sur l'hypersurface universelle des diviseurs dans P^1.

Using the finite element software FEMLAB® solutions are computed to Dirichlet problems for the Infinity-Laplace equation ∆∞(u) ≡ u2xuxx + 2uxuyuxy + u2yuyy = 0. For numerical reasons ∆q(u) = div (|▼u|q▼u) = 0, which (formally) approaches as ∆∞(u) = 0 as q → ∞, is used in computation. A parametric nonlinear solver is used, which employs a variant of the damped Newton-Gauss method. The analysis of the experiments is done using the known theory of solutions to Dirichlet problems for ∆∞(u) = 0, which includes AMLEs (Absolutely Minimizing Lipschitz Extensions), sets of uniqueness, critical segments and lines of singularity. From the experiments one main conjecture is formulated: For Dirichlet problems, which have a non-constant boundary function, it is possible to predict the structure of the lines of singularity in solutions in the Infinity-Laplace case by examining the corresponding Laplace case.

In this chapter the tension between having a free market system and a democratic government is explored. Human flourishing requires ample general prosperity that comes from a free market system and it requires freedom that depends upon democratic institutions. But this produces a dilemma. The democratic system facilitates redistributive and regulatory favoritism that undermines trust in the system generally. This, in turn, weakens many trust-dependent institutions upon which the free market system and democracy depend. This is a dilemma because democracy is needed for freedom, but it can set in motion changes that ultimately reduce freedom. This tension has implications for social, political, and economic development because it suggests that societies can use trust in the system to substitute for low levels of generalized trust.

New schemes with more efficient search operations and reduced access and search pattern leakage that support novel settings, such as dynamic data sets and multiple users, have been proposed in the last few years. Especially with the emergence of cloud storage, encrypting sensitive remote data while preserving the ability to operate efficiently is an ample opportunity for the military and industry. This chapter carried out a scoping review on cloud computing and its innovative possibilities in the use and application in medical laboratory services. While cloud computing offers numerous benefits including access to large laboratory data storage and large data processing power on demand, movement of electronic medical laboratory data through large data sets, data sharing, and access to medical laboratory results, especially to authorized medical laboratory clients and patients from different geographic locations, large data analysis public health actionable insights, and ample opportunity for retrospective and review studies on available laboratory data, the challenges such as interoperability and portability, security, and ethical issues must be addressed. Cloud brokers have emerged as mediators, linking cloud users and providers, and managing resource sharing while supporting interoperability and portability.

Chapter 1 points out the socio-economic backwardness of Indian Muslims while analysing various data sets from the Census and NSSO reports, the India Human Development Report, various reports prepared by several important committees appointed by the government of India along with and other relevant literature. The chapter argues that the Muslim question had been traditionally trapped in a communal–secular binary within dominant political and academic discourses. The data provided by various sources give us ample opportunity to look into the Muslim question from the perspective of socio-economic deprivation, political under-representation, and social marginalization. The chapter also provides sufficient empirical evidence to think about the Muslim question in India as a class question along with the problems of discrimination and exclusion faced by the Indian Muslims. The chapter further elaborates on the conditions of possibility for the formation of the ‘Indian Muslim’ as a political identity.

Abstract The Introduction provides an overview of the recent philosophical interest in the question of the human-animal binary. This interest is intertwined with critiques of “dualistic thinking,” on the one hand, and the practice of seeking panacea in texts and traditions that are—at times too readily—labeled as “monistic,” on the other. Instead of building a comparison around broadly construed traditions and metaphysical outlooks, the Introduction makes a case for a comparative philosophy methodology that concentrates on specific sets of texts in a contextually conditioned way. It also argues for mobilizing understudied philosophical texts in critically reflective ways to study their ample moments of ambiguity, if not contradiction, in regard to the human-animal binary. Finally, it presents the contents and objectives of the book’s chapters, which explore issues of historical and literary context, the texts’ epistemic features, their affective comportments, their sociopolitical investments or lack thereof, and questions of intersectionality.

The concluding chapter synthesizes the insights and gives a comprehensive answer to the volume’s overall question. It sets directions for future research and discusses implications for public organizations’ practice. There is ample evidence that management contributes to performance, both directly and indirectly, through influencing employees’ (public service) motivation, organizational commitment, and job performance. There is also evidence that management contributes to employee outcomes, both positive, such as their job satisfaction and employability, and negative, such as stress and burnout. The chapter reflects critically on the state of public management research and outlines four key issues for future research: (1) work toward an integrated theoretical framework; (2) develop more comprehensive theoretical models; (3) pay attention to the public sector context; and (4) increase methodological rigor. The chapter contends that public management–performance research remains relevant in the era of inter-organizational networks and co-production, if and when studies pay explicit attention to the public sector context and to the frontline employees involved in service production. The chapter advises public organizations to invest in service provision policies that fit the organizational mission and create the conditions for their implementation by frontline managers who can help public employees create public value.

The base metals copper, lead, nickel and zinc provide a range of crucial functions in modern technology, products and infrastructure. While mineral resources are effectively non-renewable and arguably finite, ongoing growth in production rates raises important questions about the long-term sustainability of base metals mining. This chapter presents a thorough review of the base metals sector of the global mining industry, with a particular focus on detailed data sets on reported economic mineral resources and key production trends, especially declining ore grades and increasing mine waste. The resource data are then compared with available national or global estimates of base metal resources. A review of the energy and greenhouse gas emissions (GGE) intensity of base metals mining is then presented, demonstrating that there is an inverse relationship between ore grade and energy/GGE intensity. Given that ore grades for all base metals are in gradual decline globally, this presents significant upward pressure on the future energy/GGE intensity of base metals production. In addition, other crucial issues may also affect base metals production, such as acid and metalliferous drainage, water resources impacts, mine waste management, economic conditions and wealth sharing. The chapter presents a detailed and comprehensive review of the current status of the base metals sector, showing that there is ample room for optimism from a resource perspective, but this needs to be tempered with the reality of the growing effort and risks involved in production.

Essa conclusão decorre de expressa previsão legal do art. 2º, caput, da Lei n. 9.784/1999, quando menciona “dentre outros”. Abstract A third set of housing market conditions, the actual conditions in the housing finance industry, calls for a more thorough investigation of the housing sector as seen through yet another perspective-the perspective of those who lend for housing. Housing policy is intimately tied to the development of the housing finance industry because ample and affordable housing relies heavily on the ability of the financial sector to provide ample and affordable credit for housing. How do mortgage markets develop? What accounts for the variations in the availability of credit among countries? The creation of an effective, vibrant, and responsible housing finance regime is indeed one of the five key components of an enabling housing policy regime. But does a more-enabling housing finance regime indeed result in more credit becoming available for housing? In this chapter we seek to explore these questions.

Vessels typically house large sets of different, complex types of equipment; functional failures in them lead to operational stoppage or downgrade with impacts on performance, quality and/or cost. Preventive maintenance schedules are commonly employed, the optimization of which relates to the need of maintenance, the specific component where a problem is detected, the identified fault type, the severity, the expected remaining life within acceptable performance (confidence) limits, etc. Recent advances in sensors and in Machine Learning (ML) methods, have boosted both the fault diagnosis and prognosis, thus incenting companies to invest on the development of efficient Predictive Maintenance (PdM). In this work, we explore the PdM problem for a family of equipment, namely, compressors, through the application of ML techniques on large datasets obtained from on-board sensors. We first deal with the problem of identifying the most useful features in the frequency and time domains, that enable efficient classification and we demonstrate results on data pre-processing and feature extraction. We apply two different clustering and classification algorithms, namely, k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) Support Vector Machines (SVM) on big datasets obtained from laboratory and industrial setups. We demonstrate that early failure prediction and fault classification is feasible and provides ample opportunities for the development of PdM tactics that reduce cost and minimize risk. Finally, we comment on the appropriateness of features and evaluate the classification accuracy for simple fault cases.

In the domain of machine learning, one persistent challenge is the availability of ample data, especially pertinent to computer vision. Moreover, this challenge is amplified within the realm of remote sensing, where annotations for addressing problems are frequently scarce. This manuscript critically examines the daunting task of monitoring a geophysical phenomenon —landslides— within the Peruvian landscape, a nation profoundly impacted by such events on a global scale. In this paper, we present three contributions in that direction. Our first contribution is to expand a well-known satellite imagery dataset targeting landslides. The nucleus of this foundational dataset originates from Asian territories, comprising 3799 meticulously annotated images. However, recognizing the distinct geospatial dynamics of Peru, we embarked on a rigorous exercise to augment this dataset with 838 local scenarios. These additions maintain congruence with the original dataset in terms of attributes and configuration, thereby ensuring both replicability and scalability for future research endeavours. Our second contribution is an exhaustive assessment of various semantic segmentation models. At the heart of our experimentation lies the U-net architecture, bolstered by the Weighted Cross Entropy + Dice Loss —a loss function acclaimed for its efficacy in segmentation tasks with imbalanced data sets. The empirical findings are illuminating: a rudimentary U-net architecture exhibits a formidable F1-Score of 75.5%, transcending the benchmark score of 71.65% set by the original dataset. Our third and final contribution is the comprehensive research framework developed for data acquisition, processing pipeline and model training/evaluation. Given this framework has the potential to drive a general applicability of segmentation systems to landslide monitoring systems, and to have a broader reach to the academic community and governmental stakeholders in Latin America and worldwide, we will be making all scripts and experiment details available upon publication, thus, hoping to foster an environment for collaborative scrutiny, discourse, and further advancement.

A utilização de agrotóxicos está cada vez mais comum devido a facilidade de aquisição e a dependência dos agricultores a este produto. Dentre os agrotóxicos mais utilizados, destaca-se o glifosato que é um herbicida de amplo espectro, isto é, por ser não seletivo, sistêmico e pós-emergente, age de forma eficaz na eliminação das ervas daninhas. Esta revisão bibliográfica tem por objetivo apresentar de forma breve o comportamento ambiental do glifosato e seus efeitos aos organismos a ele associados e na saúde humana. Observou-se que a utilização do glifosato pode gerar impactos direta ou indiretamente nos componentes bióticos dos ecossistemas que estão sujeitos a aplicação do herbicida. Essa ampla utilização faz com que o acesso ao glifosato seja facilitado, mesmo que para uso corriqueiro, onde a possibilidade de intoxicação devido o manejo incorreto é mais frequente. ,

Desde 2016, tenho aplicado a “estrutura BeWeDō®” como um novo método dentro da ampla rubrica de design thinking. A pesquisa orientada para a prática de design exclusivo é inspirada na arte marcial japonesa de aikido e, literalmente, cria espaço para fazer as pessoas se movimentarem — física, mental e socialmente — para explorar um problema e, em seguida, dar os primeiros passos para mover a conversa para a ação com ideação incorporada. Para estruturar possibilidades cocriativas para a ideação incorporada, BeWeDō adapta o exercício de movimento Aikidō de “tai no henko” para fazer as pessoas trabalharem em pares, conectando-se umas às outras pelo pulso para mover seus corpos (comunicando-se tanto no plano físico quanto no mental, sentido com o movimento de seu parceiro) para posições mais desejáveis. A abordagem envolve técnicas de harmonia, onde a comunicação como uma atividade cooperativa transcende o indivíduo: ao contrário, é uma capacidade coletiva gerada nas relações e interações entre as pessoas. Quando você oferece sua mão e seu parceiro toca seu pulso usando tai no henko, é um dos aspectos mais eficazes da experiência BeWeDō, pois fornece uma experiência multissensorial atraente sobre como as pessoas podem se conectar dinamicamente e cocriar possibilidades com movimento. Conectar-se por meio de movimento e toque físico leve e não intrusivo amplifica a comunicação de ideias, facilita a confiança e cria laços entre as pessoas. BeWeDō tinha recebido reconhecimento internacional, até que a pandemia de COVID-19 virou o mundo de cabeça para baixo em janeiro de 2020 e, de repente, o “toque humano” poderia colocar a saúde de outra pessoa em perigo! A COVID-19 borrou a linha entre os espaços físicos e virtuais para sempre. Embora as interfaces de videochamada, como o Zoom, tenham permitido às pessoas se conectar positivamente e promover algum senso de união durante a pandemia de maneiras que seriam impossíveis apenas alguns anos atrás, a desvantagem é que a experiência atual também pode impactar negativamente na atenção, colaboração e criatividade. Como eu poderia continuar a oferecer às pessoas uma experiência física psicologicamente segura como um processo orientado para a prática para estruturar a ideação incorporada? Em resposta à pandemia, usei uma abordagem de etnografia visual para conectar minhas experiências de campo práticas, pessoais e participativas. A pesquisa empregou todos os meus sentidos para criar, executar e representar o conhecimento como parte do processo de reflexão crítica sobre como a experiência BeWeDō existente poderia evoluir e navegar na interdependência sensual do corpo-mente-ambiente em um contexto pandêmico. O estudo confirmou que a abordagem BeWeDō poderia se adaptar rapidamente para oferecer práticas (1) “sem toque” e (2) “socialmente distanciadas”. Além disso, uma das descobertas mais significativas a emergir deste estudo é o desenvolvimento de uma prática experimental (3) “virtual” lançada durante a conferência DRS2020. Virtual BeWeDō é um protótipo de interface baseada em gestos e movimentos, que coordena o movimento virtual dinâmico usando a abordagem BeWeDō como um catalisador para fazer conexões — uma resposta transdisciplinar única, que permite às pessoas manter, avançar e gerar colaborações digitais contínuas agora e após a pandemia

O constante avanço das Tecnologias Digitais de Informação e Comunicação provocou mudanças no cenário científico, alterando o modo de pensar e fazer ciência. O quarto paradigma da ciência, denominado como e-Science, pode ser definido de forma resumida como uma ciência amplamente orientada a dados oriundos de investigações científicas. Esta realidade mostra ser um amplo campo de atuação para os profissionais da Ciência da Informação. A partir de uma pesquisa exploratória e documental, com análise quantitativa e qualitativa, investigamos se as disciplinas componentes das grades curriculares dos Programas de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informação avaliados e reconhecidos pela Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, abordam sobre a ampla realidade da e-Science, suas variações e práticas. Diante dos resultados obtidos com a pesquisa, obtivemos que dentre os vinte e três Programas de Pós-Graduação na área da Ciência da Informação, onze, representando 47,82% dos programas oferecem disciplinas que versam sobre o fenômeno da e-Science, suas relações, suas variações e suas práticas. Percebeu-se que os Programas de Pós- Graduação em Ciência da Informação analisados estão se adequando, bem como, apresentando cursos pioneiros nesta realidade da e-Science, como o curso de mestrado profissional em Gestão de Dados de Pesquisa oferecido pela Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Dyane Gaye (1975) apporte à l’espace du cinéma franco-sénégalais une nouvelle perspective. Tout en prenant appui sur la référence dakaroise, elle accorde un regard plus ample sur les situations de migration où l’élément aquatique et la traversée (au sens physique et symbolique) sont très présents.Des étoiles est son premier long métrage qui a reçu des mentions et des opinions très favorables de la part de la critique. Dans le film, nous pouvons suivre le parcours de trois personnages, de trois destins qui déplacent le spectateur de Dakar à Turin et finalement à New York. Les paysages et les espaces que traversent les personnages sont une toile de fond qui les fixe dans un réel, sans pour cela les restreindre, car il s’agira bien plus de les appréhender dans la transformation qu’ils éprouvent lors de leur déplacement. Dyane Gaye fait preuve à nouveau dans ce premier film d’une efficace maîtrise narrative souple et sobre à la fois. A Web atual criou oportunidades inéditas para a sociedade contemporânea, a exemplo de mídias sociais que permitem uma conectividade global sem precedentes, seja entre cidadãos, ou destes com serviços dos mais diversos. Por outro lado, a centralização de plataformas de amplo alcance popular por parte das chamadas "big techs" tem sido objeto de questionamento desse atual modelo da Web. O movimento pela descentralização da Web conta com seu próprio criador, Tim Berners-Lee, como um de seus líderes, por meio do projeto Solid, empreendido no MIT, que busca devolver às pessoas usuárias o controle sobre seus próprios dados. Os recursos educacionais apresentados neste artigo foram concebidos partindo do pressuposto que aos estudantes de computação deve ser dada a oportunidade de conhecer possibilidades outras além da Web já conhecida pelo grande público. Tais recursos incluem (i) um tutorial sobre as tecnologias Solid e (ii) uma aplicação Web ilustrativa, Solid compatível. Acredita-se que, para além do aspecto técnico, os recursos ora compartilhados podem deslanchar discussões necessárias e frutíferas acerca dos impactos sociais de tecnologias de ponta, no que diz respeito à ética e à privacidade de dados.

Preparing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) preservice teachers for lesson planning has a been a concern among teacher educators globally. Research has shown that preservice teachers encounter difficulties in aspects such as objective setting, considering their learners’ needs, and matching assessment and objectives, among others. Similarly, preservice teachers still need to be presented with ample opportunities for reflective teaching. These concerns have been addressed by teacher educators in systematic ways. Hence, guided by two sets of research questions, this literature review aims at exploring the procedures that educators in diverse contexts have used to aid their student teachers in preparing for lesson planning. The first set seeks to identify the procedures used as well as their outcomes. The second set of questions aims to inquire on the methodologies adopted. Twelve studies were selected for the final review, which were found using the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) and Google scholar databases as well as the academia.edu platform. A matrix was created to analyze the papers selected together with a coding process. The analysis revealed that collaborative procedures such as mentoring and lesson study combined with reflective teaching seem to render optimal learning experiences for preservice teachers. A special mention is given to plan lessons using authentic materials. Furthermore, types of methodologies that promote rich description such as case studies appear to be appropriate to frame these studies.

This paper uses a new data set to study household responses to adverse income shocks in seven Latin American countries. The results show (i) that households respond to income shocks mainly by increasing their labor force participation, selling assets, and cutting back on human capital investments, (ii) that poor households are the most likely to be affected by adverse income shocks, and (iii) that lower-middle-class households are more likely to cut back on human capital investments and move abroad when faced with an adverse income shock. Taken together, these results offer ample justification for publicly funded safety nets that target the poor.

The decade ahead is a critical one for long-term global sustainability. It presents an indispensable opportunity for the world to stimulate a recovery from COVID-19 while addressing the climate crisis. For developing countries with limited fiscal space, which has been constrained further by the pandemic, addressing the climate catastrophe requires ample external financial support. Mandated by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB) provides finance to developing countries to help them address climate change, while fostering the EU’s external objectives. It has launched ambitious climate plans, establishing itself as the EU Climate Bank, to deliver on the climate objectives of the European Green Deal within and outside the European Union (EU). Building on its 2015 Climate Strategy and its 2019 Energy Lending Policy, the EIB has now developed the Climate Bank Roadmap 2021-2025 as a blueprint of all its climate action operations within and outside the EU. This paper discusses the external dimensions of the four work streams of this Climate Bank Roadmap and explores the extent to which these work streams tackle the concerns that stakeholders raised during the consultation process that preceded the development of the roadmap. Finally, the paper provides recommendations on how the EIB can ensure greater climate action impact. It suggests that the EIB should: 1. Set new ambitious climate action targets for its operations in developing countries; 2. Significantly increase its share of climate adaptation finance; 3. Strengthen its partnerships with and in developing countries; 4. Build up local country presence and expertise; 5. Improve policy coordination of its climate action projects through blended finance; 6. Support the development of bankable projects; and 7. Enhance its inclusive financing by supporting micro- and small businesses through inter alia microcredit institutions.

Este trabalho pretende oferecer evidências de como usos estratégicos da categoria “família” pelo Estado podem funcionar como ferramentas na construção de uma abordagem conservadora dos Direitos Humanos, redesenhando a convivialidade e ao mesmo tempo apagando discursivamente desigualdades ao tratar problemas sociais como questões meramente morais. Para fazer isso, o trabalho analisa o caso do Ministério da Mulher, da Família e dos Direitos Humanos entre os anos de 2019 e 2021, durante o governo de extrema direita de Jair Bolsonaro no Brasil, por meio de uma análise do uso do YouTube pelo ministério junto a um exame de inspiração etnográfica da documentação e legislação disponível em seus canais digitais oficiais no período. As análises são apresentadas em duas seções: (i) a primeira abre o debate teórico refletindo sobre as relações e tensões entre “família” e Estado enquanto uma disputa acerca de como a convivialidade é regulada, num sentido amplo, ressaltando algumas características da categoria “família” nas políticas públicas que podem ter contribuído com o fenômeno analisado; (ii) a segunda seção parte do exame de documentos para discutir como a inserção da categoria “família” no discurso sobre políticas públicas do dito ministério embasou uma disputa própria sobre o sentido de “Direitos Humanos”. Essa segunda seção reflete, ainda, sobre como o foco na “família” parece ser parte de uma tática efetiva para materializar a política anti-Gênero de forma a apagar institucionalmente desigualdades que as políticas públicas de Direitos Humanos buscariam, em tese, atenuar ou resolver.
