Amado, Melissa. "Hispanic Businesses in Tucson Since 1854". University of Arizona, Mexican American Studies and Research Center, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/218655.

Texto completo
Resumen
Hispanic ownership of businesses has existed in Tucson prior to the Gadsden Purchase of 1854, which allowed the United States to acquire Tucson and part of Southern Arizona. Although ranching and agriculture were main sources of income for this group of pioneer settlers, they were able to diversify their wealth into other sectors of the economy. As the Hispanic population became integrated into American society, an evolution of minority identity towards business ownership occurred. Starting in the twentieth century, Mexican Americans tended to operate mostly in the service industry, such as barber shops and grocery stores. There were a few Hispanic lawyers and doctors. However, their numbers were small in compañson to the growing Mexican American and Anglo populations. The Great Depression of the 1930s affected many of these agriculturally oriented Hispanic families. By the 1940s, more Mexican Americans and Anglos were arriving to the area in search of employment. By the 1980s, a trend was evident of a service sector economy for the Tucson labor market. Most of the twenty Hispanic entrepreneurs interviewed for this study were first or second generation Tucsonans, The pioneer Hispanic families are no longer at the forefront of business opportunities. Instead, sonic of the offspring from these pioneer families have gone into other fields or enterprises in order to develop their own entrepreneurial identity. Some of the interviewees that are descendants of these "latecomers" are undecided as to whether they want their children to enter the family business. As a consequence, some of these establishments may end in the next twenty to thirty years. A cycle of continual Hispanic "latecomers" operating businesses may develop in the Tucson area. The consequence could be the lack of a solid economic base for the Hispanic business community.

Resumen
This research analyzes the business opportunities created by the "Buy American" movement. Current literature reflects a consensus that most consumers have an initial bias in favor of purchasing domestic products. However, domestic production is frequently more costly than producing abroad. In order for domestic production to increase a firm's profit, consumer willingness to pay more for domestic products is prerequisite. This study investigates whether that prerequisite is satisfied. By collecting revealed preference data from multiple locations, this study finds that, on average, domestic products do carry a price premium over similar foreign imports.

Wright, Jnr J. W. "Discrimination, entrepreneurship, and the economics of being Arab and believing in Islam in America". Thesis, Loughborough University, 1995. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7127.

Resumen
The author looks for measures of economic discrimination that exist against and within the Arab-American and Arab immigrant economy. However, the focus is on the economic impacts of intra-group conflicts between Muslims and Christians (and social distance from Palestinians) in the Arab-ethnic economic enclave. Results from this sample group show trends indicating that prejudice against Muslims makes them inordinately dependent on selfemployed earnings, but also that Muslims are not compensated evenly over time for taking extra entrepreneurial risks. It is also determined that significant finance-gaps exist between Muslims' and Christians' access to capital at the time of initial investment and at the point of expansion. The researcher concludes that there are both occupational and wage-related costs to being Arab and believing in Islam in America. In addition, the author finds that within the Arab-ethnic Muslim community that some segments are avoided socially or excluded from the relative enclave. This places Palestinians in the worst economic position and Syrian Christians in the best.

Hopkins, William Alvin. "Minority Business Enterprise Program's Impact on African American Businesses in Atlanta, Georgia". ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3782.

Texto completo
Resumen
There was a long history of Jim Crow laws in the State of Georgia, which permeated in social, educational, and economical ways that prohibited African American business owners from competing for the state contracts. In 1982, there was a shift in state policy that implemented an outreach programs to seek out African American businesses and ensure that those interested businesses were enrolled as registered vendors for procurement. Yet little is known about the success of those outreach efforts over the last 35 years. Using Swearing and Plank's work on survival of minority business programs as a conceptual framework, this study evaluated (a) the association between the registration status (registered, non-registered, unknown) with the Georgia Minority Business Enterprise Program (GMBE Program) and gender, and (b) descriptive information about the outreach efforts of the MBE Program. Data were collected from 108 randomly selected African American small business owners in the State of Georgia through an online survey. A chi-square test revealed a significant association (p = .08) between gender and enrollment of registered vendors, with women more likely to register as vendors than were men. Descriptive data also revealed that nearly half (48% percent) of respondents had not registered with the MBE Program and were not aware of the educational and economic opportunities offered through the program. Contracts were awarded 4 times more frequently to vendors registered with the MBE Program as compared to businesses not registered. The positive social change implications of this study include recommendation to the state of the Georgia MBE Program to collaborate on outreach efforts to African American business owners to encourage economic development in minority communities and minorities-owned businesses.

Resumen
Women-owned businesses continue to drive economic growth in the United States. However, some African American businesswomen lack strategies to obtain capital to start their business. Strategies to obtain funds for a startup is vital to African American women seeking to start and sustain their businesses. Guided by entrepreneurial theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies African American women use to secure financial capital to start new businesses. The participants included 6 African American women business owners in Atlanta, Georgia, with successful experience in utilizing strategies to secure financial capital to start new businesses. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and company documents. Yin's 5-step analysis was used to analyze the data. The main themes were challenges of being an African American business woman, motivating factors leading to business ownership, and overcoming bank financing challenges. The implications for positive social change may include addressing the disparity of social, human, and financial capital to start new businesses among African American women.

Resumen
Less than 30% of Black business owners successfully obtain small business loans to sustain their businesses longer than 5 years when compared to evidence that shows that more than 65% of White small business owners obtain small business loans to sustain their businesses longer than 5 years. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the experiences of 3 Black owners of small businesses who successfully obtained small business loans and maintained operations longer than 5 years in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. The conceptual framework for this study was systems theory and contingency theory. The data collection process consisted of conducting face-to-face semistructured interviews with open-ended questions and a review of documents associated with the small business owners’ attempts to remain in business longer than 5 years. Data were analyzed using the modified van Kaam method, transcribing the interview recordings, and coding the data to identify relevant themes. Two primary themes emerged regarding successful strategies for obtaining small business loans: create an effective business plan, and research and prepare for the process of procuring a loan. The implications of this study for positive social change include the potential to provide Black owners of small businesses with strategies for obtaining small business loans and achieving sustainability of operations. Business success for Black owners of small businesses might contribute to the economic prosperity of the local communities.

Schmitt, Barbara Elise. "Defining Economic Success as it Pertains to Native American Owned Businesses Located on/or Adjacent to North Dakota Reservations". Diss., North Dakota State University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/26931.

Texto completo
Resumen
Successful economic development is essential in building and sustaining a healthy community. The purpose of this study was to identify indicators of successful economic development as it pertained to Native American owned businesses located on/or adjacent to North Dakota reservations. More specifically this study sought to explore specific relationships between the perceived level of importance of knowledge, skills, and attitudes and sustainable Native American owned business ventures. Using a quantitative correlation research design, 194 Native American owned businesses located on/or adjacent to the four reservations in North Dakota: Spirit Lake, Standing Rock, Fort Berthold, and Turtle Mountain responded to a self-administered 69 item survey instrument. The instrument was designed to gain an understanding of how important each factor was to the business owner and to what extent the business owner used each factor. The compiled research data was analyzed in addressing the following questions: (a) How important are knowledge, skills, and attitudes to the sustainability of Native American owned businesses? and (b) To what extent are Native American environmental factors, knowledge, skills, and attitudes significant for emerging verses mature Native American owned businesses? Native American owned businesses play a significant role in their communities. This research indicated Native American owned businesses need planning and organization skills to be successful. Strategic planning, operational planning, communication, managing change, innovation, and human resources are all essential planning and organization skills that both emerging and mature businesses need. Emerging Native American business owners also need to be technically proficient in their field. Therefore, they should be encouraged to participate in training which focuses on technical skills. They also need to solicit critical suggestions from a business network to be successful. Receiving constant feedback on the performance of the business will assist emerging business owners in identifying and correcting issues which would otherwise hold a business back or cause it to go out of business. Tribal administrations and tribal economic development offices may benefit from this study by providing foundational knowledge to advance their economic development efforts. The results from this study may also benefit higher education business departments who offer economic development courses.

Radonjic, Katarina. "The Nature of the Relationship between American Multinational Corporations and Chinese Businesses and Its Effect on the Problem of Intellectual Property Law". Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23554.

Resumen
Intellectual property rights (IPR) have become a major problem in the relationship between the industrialized West and the developing South, primarily because the West demands that developing countries adopt and enforce Western IPR. Since the relationship between US corporations and Chinese businesses is among the most successful and at the center of the current process of globalization, IPR have been a major cause of conflict and controversy between them and serve as an exemplar for this thesis. I argue, first, that the reason that a large number of Chinese businesses, especially privately-owned small and medium-sized enterprises, infringe foreign IPR lies in the nature of the difference between what have been mostly low-tech traditional Chinese businesses and high-tech industrial economies, to which intellectual property laws belong. Second, I demonstrate that the steady improvement of intellectual property protection in the more successful areas of development in the Chinese economy suggests that the solution for improved IPR protection in China and perhaps other emerging nations will follow, not precede, the development and transformation of a low-tech pre-industrial economy into an industrial high-tech economy.

Resumen
This is a biographical case study of Mexican industrialization, focusing on expatriate U.S. businessman William O. Jenkins (1878-1963). I trace Jenkins' career in textiles, land speculation, sugar, banking, and film, using it as a forum for themes that flesh out the economic and political history of modern Mexico. Chief among these themes are Mexico's substantial but socially unequal capitalistic development; interdependent relationships between business elites and the state; the role of the regions in Mexican development; and a tradition of viewing U.S. industrialists as enemies of national progress. I use Jenkins to illustrate the ability of Mexico's business elite to negotiate the hazards of the 1910-1920 Revolution and the property expropriations that followed. Industrialists, many of them immigrants, helped to forge rapid economic development between 1933 and 1981. However, their behavior was often characterized by monopolistic and rent-seeking practices, to the qualitative detriment of industries including film and textiles. I demonstrate how the success of industrialists owed much to their relations with politicians, and how the persistence of authoritarian regimes at regional and national levels owed much to industrialists' support. For Jenkins, this symbiosis involved loans to state governors, campaign contributions, and support for the federal government by channeling cheap entertainment to urban populations. Such links help explain why fifty years of development saw little electoral democracy or progressive distribution of wealth. I "de-center" Mexico's economic and political narrative by focusing on the state of Puebla, showing how alliances between industrialists and authorities often begin in provincial arenas and how they can impact national economic and political trends. I also address the underdevelopment of Puebla City, long Mexico's second metropolis, which after 1900 fell significantly behind Guadalajara and Monterrey. Finally, I trace how Jenkins functioned rhetorically as the epitome of the grasping U.S. capitalist. His controversial image afforded leftist politicians, business rivals, and labor leaders with an inflammatory object of protest. Such "gringophobia" in turn contributed to a polarization within Mexican society that proliferated after the 1959 Cuban Revolution. I complement this theme with intermittent commentary on rarely-remarked similarities between business practice in Mexico and the United States.

Taruwinga, Patience. "The influence of cultural factors on successful succession in Indian South African family owned businesses and American family owned businesses (based in Indiana)". Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/5453.

Texto completo
Resumen
This doctoral dissertation utilizes survey research design and an interview research design to compare the influence of cultural factors on successful succession in South African and American family owned business (FOB’s). The target populations consisted of owner managers and successors of FOB’s located in two countries: USA (State of Indiana) and South Africa (Indian South Africans). The qualitative research methodology was based on 1:1 interviews with 10 FOB’s in South Africa and the USA. The survey research methodology was based on a cross-sectional survey and the research design was correlational. The independent variables included nine cultural dimensions of the target populations measured using a dedicated survey instrument. The dependent variable (Perceived Success) was the relative success of each participant in the target population, with respect to his/her alleged levels of accomplishment in the succession processes. The demographic characteristics of the members of the target populations were also recorded. Correlative relationships between nine reliably measured cultural dimensions, seven demographic characteristics, and the Perceived Success of the succession process were identified. Differences between the populations in USA and South Africa were apparent. Multiple Linear Regression analysis indicated that the most important predictor of Perceived Success in the USA population was Performance Orientation, followed in rank order by In-Group Collectivism, Assertiveness, and Uncertainty Avoidance. Demographic variables had no significant effect on the relationship between Predicted Success and the cultural dimensions of the USA population. In comparison the most important predictor of Perceived Success in the Indian South African population was Uncertainty Avoidance, followed in rank order by Performance Orientation, Future Orientation, the age of the participant, and the number of people who worked in the participant’s organization. The combined model between the USA and the Indian South African FOB’s indicated that the most important predictor for perceived success was Uncertainty Avoidance, followed in rank order by In- Group Collectivism, Performance Orientation and Assertiveness. Evidence is provided to conclude that the relative importance of cultural dimensions and demographic characteristics to the succession planning of owner managers and successors in South Africa was significantly different to those of their western counterparts.

This study qualitatively explores the ethical parameters of guanxi from the perspective of North Americans who own small businesses in Taiwan. Guanxi is the traditional method of doing business in China, and explains how social networks develop. It is complex, and personal, and very hard for an expatriate from North America to integrate into, when owning and running a business. Developing business relationships with individuals can be complex and time consuming. Guanxi explains how everyone has a role, and must behave in a certain way according to the context. Networks can include numerous stakeholders, including neighbors, police and family. The process involves a lot of gift-giving and mutual reciprocity, and can sometimes have negative connotations leading to bribery and/or corruption, and is sometimes viewed as unethical. This research specifically looks at Taiwan which often gets overlooked. It is sometimes assumed that Guanxi in Taiwan mirrors that in China, even though there is evidence of differences. Ten in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with expatriates in Taiwan. The sample includes individuals who have lived in Taiwan for up to ten years, successfully run a business for a minimum of five, and have a high-skill level of the Chinese language. Questions explored interviewees experiences of developing, and understanding, Guanxi networks in the Taiwanese system. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to study which networks were necessary and how to develop these relationships, in order for an expatriate to succeed in Taiwan. This study also considers the culturally different perspectives of business relationships, specifically, business relationship developments, transactions, or negotiations which may have been viewed as unethical in a North American context, but are perceived as morally just in a Taiwanese cultural context. This research will look at the ethical perspectives of two different cultures in relation to Guanxi relationships. The findings have practical implications, providing beneficial insights for any American individual or organization willing to do business in Taiwan.

""Undismayed By Any Mere Man": Women Lawmakers and Tax Policy in Nevada, 1919-1956". Doctoral diss., 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.8878.

Texto completo
Resumen
abstract: Women have played a vital role in Nevada's lawmaking process since first lobbying the Territorial Legislature in 1861. In subsequent decades, women increased in numbers as lobbyists, staff, and reporters. By 1914, when Nevada women won the right to vote and be elected to office, male legislators were accustomed to a female presence in the Capitol. With enfranchisement, however, came a more direct role for women in the state's lawmaking process. Featuring the twenty-nine women who served in the Nevada Legislature in the first half of the twentieth century, this dissertation enhances knowledge about public women between what are commonly called the two feminist waves. In addition to a general analysis of their partisan and legislative activities, this dissertation specifically contemplates women's participation in shifting Nevada's tax base from residents to nonresidents. This dissertation argues that these women legislators were influenced primarily by their experiences in the business sector. Suffrage provided the opportunity to hold public office, but it did not define their politics. More useful for understanding women lawmakers in the first half of the twentieth century is what I call "fiscal maternalism." Women legislators mitigated their social concerns with their understanding of the state's economic limitations. Their votes on controversial issues such as legalized gambling, easy divorce, and regulated prostitution reflected a perspective of these issues as economic first and moral second. Demonstrating a motherly care for the state's economy and the tax burden on families, women invoked both their maternal authority and financial acumen to construct their legislative authority. Combining policy history and women's history, this dissertation documents that a legislator's sex did not necessarily predict her vote on legislation and advances the gendered analysis of state lawmaking beyond the dichotomy that emerges with the application of the label "women's issues." In addition, this dissertation demonstrates that the digitization of newspapers provides a fruitful new resource for historians, particularly those interested in women. The ability to search within articles removes the reliance on headlines and reveals that the previously-disregarded society pages are valuable tools for tracing women's business activities and political networks.
