Ambient Intelligence (AmI) deals with the issue of how we can create context-aware, electronic environments which foster seamless human-computer interaction. Ambient Intelligence encompasses the fields of ubiquitous computing, artificially intelligent systems, and context awareness among others. This paper discusses context-awareness and examines how discoveries in this area will be key in propelling the development of true AmI environments. This will be done by examining the background and reasoning behind this particular strand of AmI research along with an overview of the technologies being explored alongside possible applications of context awareness in computing as well as technological and socio- ethical challenges in this field.

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is the application and embedding of artificial intelligence into everyday environments to seamlessly provide assistive and predictive support in a multitude of scenarios via an invisible user interface. These can be as diverse as autonomous vehicles, smart homes, industrial settings, and healthcare facilities—referred to as Ambient Assistive Living. This survey gives an overview of the field; defines key terms; discusses social, cultural, and ethical issues; and outlines the state of the art in AmI technology, and where opportunities for further research exist. We guide the reader through AmI from its inception more than 20 years ago, focussing on the important topics and research achievements of the past 10 years since the last major survey, before finally detailing the most recents research trends and forecasting where this technology is likely to develop. This survey covers domains, use cases, scenarios, and datasets; cultural concerns and usability issues; security, privacy, and ethics; interaction and recognition; prediction and intelligence; and hardware, infrastructure, and mobile devices. This survey serves as an introduction for researchers and the technical layperson into the topic of AmI and identifies notable opportunities for further research.

A vision of future daily life is explored in Ambient Intelligence (AmI). It contains the assumption that intelligent technology should disappear into our environment to bring humans an easy and entertaining life. The mental, physical, methodical invisibility of AmI will have an effect on the relation between design and use activities of both users and designers. Especially the ethics discussions of AmI, privacy, identity and security are moved into the foreground. However in the process of using AmI, it will go beyond these themes. The infiltration of AmI will cause the construction of new meanings of privacy, identity and security because the "visible" acting of people will be preceded, accompanied and followed by the invisible and visible acting of the AmI technology and their producers. A question in this paper is: How is it possible to create critical transformative rooms in which doubting will be possible under the circumstances that autonomous 'intelligent agents' surround humans? Are humans in danger to become just objects of artificial intelligent conversations? Probably the relation between mental, physical, methodical invisibility and visibility of AmI could give answers.

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is the emerging computing paradigm used to build next-generation smart environments. It provides services in a flexible, transparent, and anticipative manner, requiring minimal skills for human-computer interaction. Recently, AmI is being adapted to build smart systems to guide human activities in critical domains, such as, healthcare, ambient assisted living, and disaster recovery. However, the practical application to such domains generally calls for stringent dependability requirements, since the failure of even a single component may cause dangerous loss or hazard to people and machineries. Despite these concerns, there is still little understanding on dependability issues in Ambient Intelligent systems and on possible solutions. This paper provides an analysis of the AmI literature dealing with dependability issues and to propose an innovative architectural solution to such issues, based on the use of runtime verification techniques.

The inclusion of Information and Communication Technologies, especially mobile devices, in learning environments has allowed both the emergence of new ways of learning and the adaptation of traditional teaching methods. In this sense, Ambient Intelligence (AmI) paradigm represents a promising approach that can be successfully applied to education. Pervasive computing, context and location awareness are AmI features that can allow students to receive customized information in a transparent way. Fortunately, there are several technologies that can help to gather such information. In this regard, Real-Time Locating Systems (RTLS) is a key technology that can improve context-awareness in AmI-based systems. This paper presents the use of a novel RTLS based on ZigBee technology that provides users’ positions in order to enhance context information in learning applications. This way, this system allows customizing the content offered to the users without their explicit interaction, as well as the granularity level provided by the system.

In this paper, the authors investigate the concept of designing user-centric transaction protocols toward achieving dependable coordination in AmI environments. As a proof-of-concept, this paper presents a protocol that takes into account the schedules of roaming users, which move from one AmI environment to another, avoiding abnormal termination of transactions when users leave an environment for a short time and return later. The authors compare the proposed schedule-aware protocol against a schedule-agnostic one. Findings show that the use of user-centric information in such situations is quite beneficial.

AbstractAmbient intelligence (AmI) proposes pervasive information systems composed of autonomous agents embedded within the environment who, in orchestration, complement human activity in an intelligent manner. As such, it is an interesting and challenging application area for many computer science fields and approaches. A critical issue in such application scenarios is that the agents must be able to acquire, exchange, and evaluate knowledge about the environment, its users, and their activities. Knowledge populated between the agents in such systems may be contextually dependent, ambiguous, and incomplete. Conflicts may thus naturally arise, that need to be dealt with by the agents in an autonomous way. In this survey, we relate AmI to the area of knowledge representation and reasoning (KR), where conflict resolution has been studied for a long time. We take a look at a number of KR approaches that may be applied: context modelling, multi-context systems, belief revision, ontology evolution and debugging, argumentation, preferences, and paraconsistent reasoning. Our main goal is to describe the state of the art in these fields, and to draw attention of researchers to important theoretical issues and practical challenges that still need to be resolved, in order to reuse the results from KR in AmI systems or similar complex and demanding applications.

The relation of artificial intelligence (AI) and human intelligence (HI) still needs better understanding. In this article, the authors develop the fourth brain concept where AI is considered as a specific form of HI evolution. The concept development considers evolutionary and ontogenetic insights on intelligence. The forth brain can be implemented using ambient intelligence (AMI) environments that surround humans in everyday life. AMI environment allows scaffolding and other assistance information services to compensate for the HI function decay. This article proposes an at-home laboratory (AHL) design where an AMI environment is deployed at home and using everyday devices. In this setting, AHL provides a functionally equivalent alternative to the professional healthcare laboratory, though less accurate and advanced in regard to data measurements and the assistance information value.

Purpose – This paper aims to describe research work to create an innovative, and intelligent solution for energy efficiency optimisation. Design/methodology/approach – A novel approach is taken to energy consumption monitoring by using ambient intelligence (AmI), extended data sets and knowledge management (KM) technologies. These are combined to create a decision support system as an innovative add-on to currently used energy management systems. Standard energy consumption data are complemented by information from AmI systems from both environment-ambient and process ambient sources and processed within a service-oriented-architecture-based platform. The new platform allows for building of different energy efficiency software services using measured and processed data. Four were selected for the system prototypes: condition-based energy consumption warning, online diagnostics of energy-related problems, support to manufacturing process lines installation and ramp-up phase, and continuous improvement/optimisation of energy efficiency. Findings – An innovative and intelligent solution for energy efficiency optimisation is demonstrated in two typical manufacturing companies, within one case study. Energy efficiency is improved and the novel approach using AmI with KM technologies is shown to work well as an add-on to currently used energy management systems. Research limitations/implications – The decision support systems are only at the prototype stage. These systems improved on existing energy management systems. The system functionalities have only been trialled in two manufacturing companies (the one case study is described). Practical implications – A decision support system has been created as an innovative add-on to currently used energy management systems and energy efficiency software services are developed as the front end of the system. Energy efficiency is improved. Originality/value – For the first time, research work has moved into industry to optimise energy efficiency using AmI, extended data sets and KM technologies. An AmI monitoring system for energy consumption is presented that is intended for use in manufacturing companies to provide comprehensive information about energy use, and knowledge-based support for improvements in energy efficiency. The services interactively provide suggestions for appropriate actions for energy problem elimination and energy efficiency increase. The system functionalities were trialled in two typical manufacturing companies, within one case study described in the paper.

Purpose The purpose of this work is to implement an ambient intelligence (AmI) testbed to improve human sleeping conditions. Design/methodology/approach The implemented testbed is composed of the sensor node, sink node and actor node. As sensor node, the authors use a microwave sensor module (MSM) called DC6M4JN3000, which emits microwaves in the direction of a human or animal subject. These microwaves reflect back off the surface of the subject and change slightly in accordance with movements of the subject’s heart and lungs. As sink node, the authors use Raspberry Pi 3 Model B computers. In the sink node, the data are processed and then clustered by the k-means clustering algorithm. Then, the result is sent to the actor node (Reidan Shiki PAD module), which can be used for cooling and heating the bed. Findings The authors carried out simulations and experiments. Based on the simulation results, it was found that the room lighting, humidity and temperature have different effects on humans during sleeping. The best performance is shown when LIG parameter is 10 units, HUM parameter is 50 and TEM parameter is 25. Based on experimental results, it was found that the implemented AmI testbed has a good effect on humans during sleeping. Research limitations/implications For simulations, three input parameters were considered. However, new parameters that affect human sleeping conditions also need to be investigated. Further, the experiments were carried out for one person. More extensive experiments with multiple people are needed to have a better evaluation. Originality/value In this research work, a new fuzzy-based system was implemented to improve human sleeping conditions. The authors presented three new input parameters to evaluate the output (sleeping condition). The authors implemented and evaluated a testbed and showed that the implemented AmI testbed has a good effect on humans during sleeping, thus improving their quality of life (QoL).

Ubiquitous computing and ambient intelligence (or AmI) models raise the need for secured systems, due to increased heterogeneity, intelligence and dynamism. Information in such environments is managed by systems formed mostly of devices with limited capabilities. Indeed, AmI characteristics, difficult to handle by traditional computing concepts, are making the agent paradigm to gain impetus and increasing the interest of researchers and industry in this concept. However, the inherent complexity of information security is bigger in agent-based AmI systems built by gathering distributed information and services that are not under the control of a single entity, and introduce new security and privacy concerns. In fact, securing these systems requires protecting any element from every other. This paper proposes a mechanism for enhancing security and privacy while using agents in AmI environments, based on three main building blocks: verification, judgment and surveillance. Furthermore, the key idea is based on cooperation and collective decision.

The platform provides condition-based energy consumption warning, online diagnostics of energy-related problems, support to manufacturing process lines installation and ramp-up phase and continuous improvement/optimisation of energy efficiency. The systems monitor energy consumption using AmI and KM technologies. Together they create a decision support system as an innovative add-on to currently used energy management systems. Findings – The systems produce an improvement in energy efficiency in manufacturing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The systems provide more comprehensive information about energy use and some knowledge-based support. Research limitations/implications – Prototype systems were trialled in a manufacturing company that produces mooring chains for the offshore oil and gas industry, an energy intensive manufacturing operation. The paper describes a case study involving energy-intensive processes that addressed different manufacturing concepts and involved the manufacture of mooring chains for offshore platforms. The system was developed to support online detection of energy efficiency problems. Practical implications – Energy efficiency can be optimised in assembly and manufacturing processes. The systems produce an improvement in energy efficiency in manufacturing SMEs. The systems provide more comprehensive information about energy use and some knowledge-based support. Social implications – This research addresses two of the most critical problems in energy management in industrial production technologies: how to efficiently and promptly acquire and provide information online for optimising energy consumption and how to effectively use such knowledge to support decision making. Originality/value – This research was inspired by the need for industry to have effective tools for energy efficiency, and that opportunities for industry to take up energy efficiency measures are mostly not carried out. The research combined AmI and KM technologies and involved new uses of sensors, including wireless intelligent sensor networks, to measure environment parameters and conditions as well as to process performance and behaviour aspects, such as material flow using smart tags in highly flexible manufacturing or temperature distribution over machines. The information obtained could be correlated with standard ECD to monitor energy efficiency and identify problems. The new approach can provide effective ways to collect more information to give a new insight into energy consumption within a manufacturing system.

The emergence of the Ambient Intelligence (AmI) paradigm and the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and services unveiled new potentials for the domain of domestic living, where the line between “the computer” and the (intelligent) environment becomes altogether invisible. Particularly, the residents of a house can use the living room not only as a traditional social and individual space where many activities take place, but also as a smart ecosystem that (a) enhances leisure activities by providing a rich suite of entertainment applications, (b) implements a home control middleware, (c) acts as an intervention host that is able to display appropriate content when the users need help or support, (d) behaves as an intelligent agent that communicates with the users in a natural manner and assists them throughout their daily activities, (e) presents a notification hub that provides personalized alerts according to contextual information, and (f) becomes an intermediary communication center for the family. This paper (i) describes how the “Intelligent Living Room” realizes these newly emerged roles, (ii) presents the process that was followed in order to design the living room environment, (iii) introduces the hardware and software facilities that were developed in order to improve quality of life, and (iv) reports the findings of various evaluation experiments conducted to assess the overall User Experience (UX).

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) joins together the fields of ubiquitous computing and communications, context awareness, and intelligent user interfaces. Energy, fault-tolerance, and mobility are newly added dimensions of AmI. Within the context of AmI the concept of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) for “anytime and anywhere” is likely to play larger roles in the future in which people are surrounded and supported by small context-aware, cooperative, and nonobtrusive devices that will aid our everyday life. The connection between knowledge generation and communication ad hoc networking is symbiotic—knowledge generation utilizes ad hoc networking to perform their communication needs, and MANETs will utilize the knowledge generation to enhance their network services. The contribution of the present study is a distributed evolving fuzzy modeling framework (EFMF) to observe and categorize relationships and activities in the user and application level and based on that social context to take intelligent decisions about MANETs service management. EFMF employs unsupervised online one-pass fuzzy clustering method to recognize nodes' mobility context from social scenario traces and ubiquitously learn “friends” and “strangers” indirectly and anonymously.

In a future vision of Ambient Intelligence — or AmI — our surrounding environment will integrate a pervasive, interconnected network of sensors, intelligent appliances and computer-like devices. This implies, on the one hand, hardware and interface related issues, and, on the other hand, a layer of context-aware services that manages the large quantities of information generated throughout a system formed mostly of devices with limited capabilities. This paper presents the first steps toward the realization of the AmIciTy framework: a multi-agent system that relies on local interaction and the self-organization of agents, having as purpose the context-aware sharing of pieces of information. The paper presents the structure of the system, the design of the agents, the manner of building scenarios, experiments and the evaluation of a prototype.

The relatively high rate of injuries in construction is not surprising, as site work by its very nature ranks highly on fundamental risk factors. Working at heights often magnifies these risk factors. The literature reveals that falls from heights accounts for a large percentage of injuries in construction worldwide. Thailand is no exception, where fall accidents constitute the majority of high-rise construction accidents despite preventive measures being implemented. This paper examines how the use of a simple Ambient Intelligence (AmI) system—a device comprising a microcontroller, microwave sensors, Light Emitting Diode (LED) and audio alarm—could help to affect safety behavioural change of on-site construction workers in order to decrease the potential for fall accidents. An experiment was conducted at a high-rise building construction site in Bangkok, Thailand to examine the effectiveness of the AmI in helping workers mitigate the risk of falling from heights. The analysis of the data collected over two work weeks from the pre- and post-AmI application using X-bar charts and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a significant reduction of about 78% in the number of workers passing through the fall hazard zones. The finding established the potential of a simple AmI for reducing the risk of fall accidents.

The increase in older workers in industrialized countries has become evident in the past two decades. The need to support the ageing workforce to effectively perform their tasks has resulted in Ambient Assisted Working (AAW), consisting of developing “smart” systems that can adapt themselves to workers’ needs by exploiting ambient intelligence (AmI) solutions. In AAW, AmI provides flexible workplace adaptations for a wide range of older workers (including persons characterized by chronic conditions and disabilities), while ensuring the ageing workforce’s safety and comfort within the workplace. This work proposes a systematic literature review with the aim of identifying trends among existing AAW solutions specifically designed for older workers. The review adopted the PRISMA methodology, focusing on journal articles and surveying more than 1500 works. The review underlined an absence of articles completely devoted to this research question. Nonetheless, by extending the research question to existing AmI solutions for workers that could potentially be able to support older workers in performing their working activities, it was possible to draw some considerations on the adoption of AmI for the ageing workforce. Among them, the review identified the different types of supporting AmI solutions provided to AAW, which technologies were adopted, and which workplaces were investigated the most. Finally, this work leveraged the findings of the review process to sketch some future research directions for AAW as a discipline.

Many stakeholders have important roles to play.Originality/valueThe paper identifies necessary safeguards to protect privacy, identity, trust, security and e‐inclusion. It identifies specific recommendations for the European Commission, Member States, industry, civil society organizations, academia and individuals.

The current generation of connected devices and the Internet of Things augment people’s capabilities through ambient intelligence. Ambient Intelligence (AmI) support systems contain applications consuming available services in the environment to serve users. A well-known design of these applications follows a service architecture style and implement artificial intelligence mechanisms to maintain an awareness of the context: The service architecture style enables the distribution of capabilities and facilitates interoperability. Intelligence and context-awareness provide an adaptation of the environment to improve the interaction. Smart objects in distributed deployments and the increasing machine awareness of devices and people context also lead us to architectures, including self-governed policies providing self-service. We have systematically reviewed and analyzed ambient system governance considering service-oriented architecture (SOA) as a reference model. We applied a systematic mapping process obtaining 198 papers for screening (out of 712 obtained after conducting searches in research databases). We then reviewed and categorized 68 papers related to 48 research projects selected by fulfilling ambient intelligence and SOA principles and concepts. This paper presents the result of our analysis, including the existing governance designs, the distribution of adopted characteristics, and the trend to incorporate service in the context-aware process. We also discuss the identified challenges and analyze research directions.

This paper addresses the problem of data aggregation platforms operating in heterogeneous Ambient Intelligence Environments. In these platforms, device interoperability is a challenge and erratic sensor observations are difficult to be detected. We propose ADES (Automatic Detection of Erratic Sensors), a statistical approach to detect erratic behavior in sensors and annotate those errors in a semantic platform. To do that, we propose three binary classification systems based on statistical tests for erratic observation detection, and we validate our approach by verifying whether ADES is able to classify sensors by its observations correctly. Results show that the first two classifiers (constant and random observations) had good accuracy rates, and they were able to classify most of the samples. In addition, all of the classifiers obtained a very low false positive rate.

This electronic document describes one of the first full open-source frameworks for posture and face detection and classification using Kinect sensors, based entirely on an open-sourced software platform. It has been designed with the possibility of automatic monitoring of either an elderly person who is situated in a closed space (a room with furniture, appliances, and other rigid objects), or a patient who suffers from a physiological disorder. It is also based on an original hardware platform (the AmI-Platform), which includes more Kinect sensors, data acquisition stations, and crunches (data servers). The articles tackle two of the most important issues for ambient intelligence: accurate determination of the person and his or her facial landmarks (to understand emotions) and fast and reliable posture determination (to take appropriate measures in case of an accident).

The term Ambient Intelligence (AmI) encompasses other technologies such as ubiquitous communication, pervasive computing and ubiquitous computing. Hospitals can improve their working by monitoring the health of the patients and performing automatic analysis of various and health parameters inside the room. Security mechanisms can also be enhanced by only allowing authorized hospital staff and attendants in the ward. With the advent of Ambient Intelligence and the congenial political environment, the focus is now shifting to providing better healthcare at homes than at traditional medical centers. In this paper, we implemented an algorithm in which we consider a specific room of a hospital as the environment, with a patient monitored for health and security reasons. If anything is not allowed for the particular patient or there are some unwanted variations in the health parameters of the patient, the alarm was rang and the patient's assistants were notified.

A prototype to improve learning tasks for mentally handicapped people is shown in this research paper using ambient intelligence techniques and based on cyber-physical systems. The whole system is composed of a worktable, a cyber-glove (both with several RFID and NFC detection zones), and an AmI software application for modeling and workflow guidance. A case study was carried out by the authors where sixteen mentally handicapped people and 3 trainers were involved in the experiment. The experiment consisted in the execution of several memorization tasks of movements of objects using the approach presented in this paper. The results obtained were very interesting, indicating that this kind of solutions are feasible and allow the learning of complex tasks to some types of mentally handicapped people. In addition, at the end of the paper are presented some lessons learned after performing the experimentation.

People nowadays spend more and more time performing collaborative tasks at anywhere and anytime. Specifically, professionals want to collaborate with each other by using advanced technologies for sharing knowledge in order to improve/automatize business processes. Semantic web technologies offer multiple benefits such as data integration across sources and automation enablers. The conversion of the widespread Content Management Systems into its semantic equivalent is a relevant step, as this enables the benefits of the semantic web to be extended. The FLERSA annotation tool makes it possible. In particular, it converts the Joomla! CMS into its semantic equivalent. However, this tool is highly coupled with that specific Joomla! platform. Furthermore, ambient intelligent (AmI) environments can be seen as a natural way to address complex interactions between users and their environment, which could be transparently supported through distributed information systems. However, to build distributed information systems for AmI environments it is necessary to make important design decisions and apply techniques at system/software architecture level. In this paper, a SOA-based design solution consisting of two services and an underlying middleware is combined with the FLERSA tool. It allows end-users to collaborate independently of technical details and specific context conditions and in a distributed, decentralized way.

This work describes an approach to synergistically exploit ambient intelligence technologies, mobile devices, and evolutionary computation in order to support blended commerce or ubiquitous commerce scenarios. The work proposes a software architecture consisting of three main components: linked data for e-commerce, cloud-based services, and mobile apps. The three components implement a scenario where a shopping mall is presented as an intelligent environment in which customers use NFC capabilities of their smartphones in order to handle e-coupons produced, suggested, and consumed by the abovesaid environment. The main function of the intelligent environment is to help customers define shopping plans, which minimize the overall shopping cost by looking for best prices, discounts, and coupons. The paper proposes a genetic algorithm to find suboptimal solutions for the shopping plan problem in a highly dynamic context, where the final cost of a product for an individual customer is dependent on his previous purchases. In particular, the work provides details on the Shopping Plan software prototype and some experimentation results showing the overall performance of the genetic algorithm.

The significance that Ambient Intelligence (AmI) has acquired in recent years requires the development of innovative solutions. In this sense, the development of AmI-based systems requires the creation of increasingly complex and flexible applications. The use of context-aware technologies is an essential aspect in these developments in order to perceive stimuli from the context and react upon it autonomously. This paper presents SYLPH, a novel platform that defines a method for integrating dynamic and self-adaptable heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). This approach facilitates the inclusion of context-aware capabilities when developing intelligent ubiquitous systems, where functionalities can communicate in a distributed way. A WSN infrastructure has been deployed for testing and evaluating this platform. Preliminary results and conclusions are presented in this paper.

The development of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) will radically transform our everyday life and social representations. These transformations will notably impact the working environment. The objective of this paper is to offer a first survey of the main ethical issues raised by the development of intelligent working environments (IWEs). It especially focuses on the capacity of such environments to collect and handle personal medical data. The first two sections of this paper aim to clarify the methodology (2) as well as the object (3) of the research. We then point out some of the main ethical issues raised by IWEs and their capacity to collect and handle medical data. The final section attempts to offer some elements of reflection regarding the ethical principles that should guide the development of IWEs in the future.

Smart environments and Ambient Intelligence (AmI) technologies are defining the future society where energy optimization and intelligent management are essential for a sustainable advance. Mobile robotics is also making an important contribution to this advance with the integration of sensors and intelligent processing algorithms. This paper presents the application of an Assistant Personal Robot (APR) as an autonomous agent for temperature, humidity, and luminance supervision in human-frequented areas. The robot multiagent capabilities allow gathering sensor information while exploring or performing specific tasks and then verifying human comfortability levels. The proposed methodology creates information maps with the distribution of temperature, humidity, and luminance and interprets such information in terms of comfort and warns about corrective actuations if required.

The 10th International Symposium on Advanced Intelligent Systems 2009 (ISIS2009) held on August 17-19, 2009, at the Bumin Campus of Dong-A University (http://www.donga.ac.kr/) in Busan, Korea, was sponsored by the Korean Institute of Intelligent System Society (KIIS) and cosponsored technically by the Japan Society for Fuzzy Theory and Intelligent Informatics (SOFT) and the Taiwanese Association for Artificial Intelligence (TAAI). The international symposium focused on state-of-art accomplishments, innovations, and potential directions in intelligent systems. It also marked an epoch of innovation and the dissemination of research into many interesting fields. Its broad theme covered the latest in technical fields, including artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, Ambient Intelligence (AmI), bioinformatics, information technology, and their wide-ranging applications, from basic theoretical work to practical engineering applications. The 80 featured papers were presented by 120 participants. With so many papers submitted to JACIII, this special issue consists of just two strictly selected papers. The first, deals with emerging research trends in robotics, proposing a new trajectory generation using the univariate Dynamic Encoding Algorithm for Searches (uDEAS) in the turning of a biped walking robot. The second paper, presenting the latest findings in AmI, details a newly designed and implemented robust capacitive sensor with parasitic parameter modeling over a range of high 200 KHz frequencies based on an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) algorithm. This work has been focused on the part of the population with hearing impairment who owns a dog and that worries about not listening the dog barks, specially when a risky situation is taking place at home. A survey was carried out on people with deafness problems to find out hazard situations which they are exposed at home. A system prototype was developed to be integrated as a component of ambient intelligence (AmI) for ambient assisted living (AAL) that serves to Hearing Impaired People (HIP). The prototype detects dog barks and notifies users through both a smart mobile app and a visual feedback. It consists of a connection between a Raspberry Pi 3 card and a ReSpeaker Mic Array v2.0 microphone array; a communication module with a smartphone was implemented, which displays written messages or vibrations when receiving notifications. The cylinder-shaped device was designed by the authors and sent it to 3D print with a resin material. The prototype recognized the barking efficiently by using a machine learning model based on Support Vector Machine technique. The prototype was tested with deaf people which were satisfied with precision, signal intensity, and activation of lights.

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) encompasses technological infrastructures capable of sensing data from environments and extracting high-level knowledge to detect or recognize users’ features and actions, as well as entities or events in their surroundings. Visual perception, particularly object detection, has become one of the most relevant enabling factors for this context-aware user-centered intelligence, being the cornerstone of relevant but complex tasks, such as object tracking or human action recognition. In this context, convolutional neural networks have proven to achieve state-of-the-art accuracy levels. However, they typically result in large and highly complex models that typically demand computation offloading onto remote cloud platforms. Such an approach has security- and latency-related limitations and may not be appropriate for some AmI use cases where the system response time must be as short as possible, and data privacy must be guaranteed. In the last few years, the on-device paradigm has emerged in response to those limitations, yielding more compact and efficient neural networks able to address inference directly on client machines, thus providing users with a smoother and better-tailored experience, with no need of sharing their data with an outsourced service. Framed in that novel paradigm, this work presents a review of the recent advances made along those lines in object detection, providing a comprehensive study of the most relevant lightweight CNN-based detection frameworks, discussing the most paradigmatic AmI domains where such an approach has been successfully applied, the different challenges arisen, the key strategies and techniques adopted to create visual solutions for image-based object classification and localization, as well as the most relevant factors to bear in mind when assessing or comparing those techniques, such as the evaluation metrics or the hardware setups used.

A voice-controlled smart home system based on conversational agents can address the specific needs of older people, proactively providing support, compensating for cognitive decline, and coping with solitude, among other features. In particular, Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) platforms provide considerable support for complex adaptive systems that are naturally distributed and situated in dynamic environments, such as Ambient intelligence (AmI) applications. Such autonomous intelligent agents are capable of independent reasoning and joint analysis of complex situations to support high-level interaction with humans, besides providing typical characteristics of MAS, such as cooperation and coordinated action. In this context, we developed an approach using a MAS previously evaluated for visually impaired users, where most of the system’s functionalities are also helpful for the elderly. Our methodology is based on the four steps of the interactive design process. As a result, we determined that our approach has elements that allow for natural interaction with users, and we identified and discussed improvements and new features for future work. We believe that our findings can point to directions for building AmI systems that are capable of more natural interaction with users.

In Ambient Intelligence (AmI), the activity a user is engaged in is an essential part of the context, so its recognition is of paramount importance for applications in areas like sports, medicine, personal safety, and so forth. The concurrent use of multiple sensors for recognition of human activities in AmI is a good practice because the information missed by one sensor can sometimes be provided by the others and many works have shown an accuracy improvement compared to single sensors. However, there are many different ways of integrating the information of each sensor and almost every author reporting sensor fusion for activity recognition uses a different variant or combination of fusion methods, so the need for clear guidelines and generalizations in sensor data integration seems evident. In this survey we review, following a classification, the many fusion methods for information acquired from sensors that have been proposed in the literature for activity recognition; we examine their relative merits, either as they are reported and sometimes even replicated and a comparison of these methods is made, as well as an assessment of the trends in the area.

In this paper, we consider the use of wearable sensors for providing affect-based adaptation in Ambient Intelligence (AmI) systems. We begin with discussion of selected issues regarding the applications of affective computing techniques. We describe our experiments for affect change detection with a range of wearable devices, such as wristbands and the BITalino platform, and discuss an original software solution, which we developed for this purpose. Furthermore, as a test-bed application for our work, we selected computer games. We discuss the state-of-the-art in affect-based adaptation in games, described in terms of the so-called affective loop. We present our original proposal of a conceptual design framework for games, called the affective game design patterns. As a proof-of-concept realization of this approach, we discuss some original game prototypes, which we have developed, involving emotion-based control and adaptation. Finally, we comment on a software framework, that we have previously developed, for context-aware systems which uses human emotional contexts. This framework provides means for implementing adaptive systems using mobile devices with wearable sensors.

Europe faces a considerable challenge in providing good quality health care in the forthcoming future as the aging population increases. The phenomenon also results in a considerable cost on society due to the dependency on the public health sector particularly because such individuals would not be able to contribute to the economy. On the other hand, younger persons would need to make alternative arrangements to assist their elderly parents or relatives, potentially affecting productivity. The project PervasIve Nursing And docToral Assistant (PINATA) seeks to tackle this matter through the merging of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) and semantic web technologies. PINATA utilises pervasive devices to aid doctors and nurses to focus on the patient and thus improve the quality of healthcare services. This project proves the significant importance of using wireless technology in healthcare. This paper focuses on the use of Wi-Fi and RFID in an effort to enable continuous and intelligent monitoring of patients' conditions remotely. Results show that the detection system performs well (over 80%) accuracy on fall detection and the manual readings mapped 100% with the results collected by the system over the Wi-Fi infrastructure discussed in this paper.

Resumen
Integration of innovative pervasive technologies into the surrounding environment creates ambient intelligence which has become the subject of several scientific and academic considerations. In particular, the pervasive technology is based on Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Ambient intelligence may be viewed from several perspectives: a technological, multi-aspect and visionary point of view. Several predictors influence the level of ambient intelligence. The aim is to identify significant predictors influencing ambient intelligence and simultaneously determine their impact on the achieved level of ambient intelligence of the company. In the research methodology, we acknowledge the research presumptions, the research question and research hypotheses, the measurement instrument, obtained data and methods used in accordance with the research model. The scientific article presents the results of an empirical study conducted on 206 enterprises, focusing on the examining of the influence of selected predictors on the level of ambient intelligence in enterprises in the Slovak Republic. It examines not only the influence of selected predictors on the level of ambient intelligence, but also their mutual interaction. We found that these activities even build ambient intelligence on their own, although in interaction with each other, their effect on the level of ambient intelligence begins to fade. Therefore, it is necessary to opt for their combination appropriately. Finally, we present the limits of the research and suggestions on further directions of research in this field.

By collecting various activities and events of human beings in urban plaza, dependencies are further analyzed. In this research, the commonsense knowledge model of activities in urban leisure space is called “SmartCypin”. This paper presents a semantic network of commonsense knowledge that is useful in capturing human experience in ambient intelligence environments.

Higher life expectancy is increasing the number of age-related cognitive impairment cases. It is also relevant, as some authors claim, that physical exercise may be considered as an adjunctive therapy to improve cognition and memory after strokes. Thus, the integration of physical and cognitive therapies could offer potential benefits. In addition, in general these therapies are usually considered boring, so it is important to include some features that improve the motivation of patients. As a result, computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation systems and serious games for health are more and more present. In order to achieve a continuous, efficient and sustainable rehabilitation of patients, they will have to be carried out as part of the rehabilitation in their own home. However, current home systems lack the therapist’s presence, and this leads to two major challenges for such systems. First, they need sensors and actuators that compensate for the absence of the therapist’s eyes and hands. Second, the system needs to capture and apply the therapist’s expertise. With this aim, and based on our previous proposals, we propose an ambient intelligence environment for cognitive rehabilitation at home, combining physical and cognitive activities, by implementing a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) that gathers, as far as possible, the knowledge of a rehabilitation expert. Moreover, smart sensors and actuators will attempt to make up for the absence of the therapist. Furthermore, the proposed system will feature a remote monitoring tool, so that the therapist can supervise the patients’ exercises. Finally, an evaluation will be presented where experts in the rehabilitation field showed their satisfaction with the proposed system.

In the fields of auto-control, the requirement for dependability and intelligence of the instrument is often to be considered seriously. Since the capability of the electronic sensor and affect of the ambient temperature, the high dependability and intelligence is a hard aim to be reached. And the error through normal methods to design may be very large. The intelligence is poor. The article introduces the project process of making an Intelligent Electric Mini-car with high dependability and intelligence: which is consisted of SCM (single-chip microcomputer) SPCE061A, multiple kinds of sensors and some modules to support. Base on the SCM SPCE061A, the mini-car can identify different voice, record & play, race intellectually by the order of voice, dodge the barriers automatically and measure the distance accurately while running at different speed by introducing the PWM and the HALL speed sensor. At the same time, it has radar of backing a car, GPS (Global Position System) and the ability to detect alcohol in a motorman. To enhance the function of the mini-car, radiogram, MTV and LED of kinds of color is added, too. With the information displayed on the LCD and the voice register, it is easier to communicate with the mini-car. With the separate of circuit of controlling and electromotor, the stability of the system has improved. It has made good use of power to adopt 3.3V for the switch circuit and high efficiency PWM. Under the control of the voice order, it also can detect the real time and temperature meticulously. The project is adopting intelligent sensor and new SCM, which combined the multiple kinds of new intelligent electronic device, not only to measure the data for the system accurately, but also to communicate with us. At last the actual data of speed and distance is given to prove the feasibility of the project.

The aim of this paper is to highlight on the use of artificial intelligence in improving the preservation and quality of cashew apple juice with an objective to reduce the astringency as well as microbial count, so that shelf life of the juice will be prolonged. Cashew apples are highly nutritious consisting of vitamins, organic acids, polyphenols, sugars, amino acids and minerals. Although cashew fruits are in abundance, their utilization is limited due to astringency and rapid microbial deterioration. The effects of clarification, sterile filtration and chemical preservation were investigated. The juice from the cashew apple was extracted using mechanical juice extractor with stainless metal. The extractor had an average efficiency of 80%. Three samples of the juice (fresh juice, juice stored under ambient conditions for 24 hrs and refrigerated juice at 5 0C) were tested for sensory evaluation. The results showed a significant difference (p<0.05) between the colour, taste and general acceptability of juice under ambient storage when compared with fresh juice; but there was no significant difference in the mouth feel. There was no significant difference between the colour, taste and mouth feel of the refrigerated juice and fresh juice. The physico-chemical characteristics show that appearance, specific gravity, pH and total soluble solids of the juice are affected significantly (p<0.05) by storage under ambient conditions but only the specific gravity changed significantly (p<0.05) during refrigeration. The vitamin C content of the refrigerated juice was higher than juice stored under ambient conditions and the juice can be preserved safely under refrigeration up to three months. Mechanical juice extractor should be used in extracting juice as this will reduce wastage and contamination of the products.

Human Action Recognition (HAR) is a rapidly evolving field impacting numerous domains, among which is Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). In such a context, the aim of HAR is meeting the needs of frail individuals, whether elderly and/or disabled and promoting autonomous, safe and secure living. To this goal, we propose a monitoring system detecting dangerous situations by classifying human postures through Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions. The developed algorithm works on a set of features computed from the skeleton data provided by four Kinect One systems simultaneously recording the scene from different angles and identifying the posture of the subject in an ecological context within each recorded frame. Here, we compare the recognition abilities of Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) Sequence networks. Starting from the set of previously selected features we performed a further feature selection based on an SVM algorithm for the optimization of the MLP network and used a genetic algorithm for selecting the features for the LSTM sequence model. We then optimized the architecture and hyperparameters of both models before comparing their performances. The best MLP model (3 hidden layers and a Softmax output layer) achieved 78.4%, while the best LSTM (2 bidirectional LSTM layers, 2 dropout and a fully connected layer) reached 85.7%. The analysis of the performances on individual classes highlights the better suitability of the LSTM approach.

The purpose of the smart home application is to devise a set of intelligent home appliances that can provide an awareness of the users’ needs, providing them with a better home life experience without overpowering them with complex technologies and intuitive user interfaces. There are a large number of reseaches dealing with Wireless Sensor Networks(WSN) applications, but it is still possible to explored in WSN development and maintenance. The WSN paradigm has been stimulated by considering the integration of the WSN with sophisticated Autonomous Mobile Robots(AMR), having advanced mobility,processing and communication capabilities. The complementarities of the WSN and AMR technologies may result in a symbiotic coexistence with mutual advantages for both systems and may enable novel services in advanced scenarios,such as ubiquitous robotics,networked robotics,ambient intelligence. AMR can be considered to be mobile nodes that provide additional sensorial information, improve/repair the connectivity and collect information from wireless sensor nodes. On the other hand, the WSN can be considered as an extension of the sensorial capabilities of the robots and it can provide a smart environment for AMR. This paper examines the possibility of integration WSN and AMR into a smart home application.

One of the areas of application of digital mobile assistants is intelligent transport and tourist guides. Such personalised systems aim to facilitate the increasingly difficult choice of the most appropriate transport option regarding personal preferences and habits, current location and available options in real time. To implement a smart travel guide, it is necessary to develop personalised models that include not only static information about routes and destinations, but also to take into account the personal preferences of the user and dynamically respond to unplanned real world circumstances. In the field of intelligent systems, such variable physical characteristics in time and space (so-called ambient characteristics) have a significant role in the degree of usefulness for the end user. The personal assistant is an integral part of the user experience that helps tourists immerse themselves in the rich history and cultural heritage of Bulgaria. Modern technologies in the field of artificial intelligence allow the tourist to get acquainted with the traditions and folk customs, receiving detailed information about the surrounding objects such as folk costumes, architectural monuments and others. High stress levels and sleep deprivation may cause several mental or physical health issues, such as depression, impaired memory, decreased motivation, obesity, etc. The COVID-19 pandemic has produced unprecedented changes in our lives, generating significant stress, and worries about health, social isolation, employment, and finances. To this end, nowadays more than ever, it is crucial to deliver solutions that can help people to manage and control their stress, as well as to reduce sleep disturbances, so as to improve their health and overall quality of life. Technology, and in particular Ambient Intelligence Environments, can help towards that direction, when considering that they are able to understand the needs of their users, identify their behavior, learn their preferences, and act and react in their interest. This work presents two systems that have been designed and developed in the context of an Intelligent Home, namely CaLmi and HypnOS, which aim to assist users that struggle with stress and poor sleep quality, respectively. Both of the systems rely on real-time data collected by wearable devices, as well as contextual information retrieved from the ambient facilities of the Intelligent Home, so as to offer appropriate pervasive relaxation programs (CaLmi) or provide personalized insights regarding sleep hygiene (HypnOS) to the residents. This article will describe the design process that was followed, the functionality of both systems, the results of the user studies that were conducted for the evaluation of their end-user applications, and a discussion about future plans.
