Texto completoOur analysis brings new understanding to the figure of “noble savage” in its historical evolution, its reconfigurations, then its scope contemporary media and society. The “noble savage” is the hero, despite himself, of wanderings of the human eco-imaginary faced with the adaptation of a Western society now obliged to better respect nature. However, we demonstrate that lies a neo-colonialist unthinking behind the respectable and good masks intentions around indigenous populations essentialized in a purity sphere. As such, we demonstrate that the heroization of certain figures(e.g. Raoni) can rely on active and problematic storytelling. The “noble savage” is so alive in the 21st century, showing up in cinema (e.g. Avatar) and in political speeches, it becomes a meta-marker of the evolution of our Western culture. Its popularity since the stories of the first explorers is reinvented therefore on our screens. Consistently, our main corpus extends from the end of the 20th century to the present day with a cultural studies methodology. We have selected a dozen pieces of content on the “savage”/“noble savage”, a selection by their popularity and durability in collective memory

Texto completoThis study examines polyphonic enunciation in online writings, focusing on that which arises from and is induced by interactions on YouTube during the Amazon rainforest wildfires. After presenting the context and the concepts and theories related to polyphony, it proposes a methodological framework for analyzing polyphony that first captures the role of techno-semiotic, socio-economic, and psychosociological aspects of YouTube in polyphony, and then interrogates this polyphony at the level of other media actors mentioned from YouTube. This allows us to identify consistencies and changes in polyphonic configurations during our observation period and to show how these polyphonic configurations during the Amazon rainforest wildfires could be influenced by exogenous contextual variables. We also observe power dynamics when this polyphony is used as a strategy by various media actors involved in the social controversy surrounding the Amazon rainforest wildfires. This study complements previous research on editorial enunciation in screen writings by considering polyphony at both the network actors’ level and the argumentation level

Texto completoEnvironment problems are many in Brazil however they take on a major importance in the Amazon basin, especially with the "Grande Carajas Project" (PGC) of which the "Companhia Vale do Rio Doce" company is the leader. A "US steel" subsidiary was looking for manganese, in that Amazon region when a helicopter crash landing les Bruno Augusto dos Santos to the discovery of the world's biggest open reserve of iron ore. 27000 workers were to set up the Carajas Program in 1982 and it is estimated that more than 500000 mine workers now operate in the Amazon forest. According to the Environment Institute of Brazil IBAMA "when iron ore is important, then there is a special vegetal stratum called "canga", and on top of it grows the typical metalophylic forest, of Carajas" which was to disappear with mining. No rigorous study having been done, mining has led to deforestation and pollution that the Brazilian Institute of Socio Economical Studies IBASE has confirmed. This theoretical study deals with PGC-CVRD socio environmental impact in Amazon, by exploring strategies, policies and relationships of Indians with towns and forests. The inquiry shows social and ecological imbalance as the consequences mainly fall on poorer people, mine workers and landless peasants. We listen to the main "actors" among Indians, elected representatives, trade unions and rural leaders as well as Federal administration, and Parauapebas City hall. I have studied the Privatization of PGC

Texto completoThe growth of livestock production and the deforestation processes have not clear explications, in the eastern Amazon region. How the livestock marketing chain is driving the spatial organization of the pioneer frontiers in this region ? About this question, the author first develops a functional analysis of the livestock marketing chain. The systemic approach is useful to understand the complexity of the relations between actors, and to analyse the influences of every commercialization channel on the individual and collective strategies. In a second time, the author analyses how the marketing channels and integrated in the spatial system of pioneer's areas, and how they drive his evolution. He obtains two kinds of results : comprehension of the mechanisms for interaction between livestock marketing chains and pioneer territories, three tools for monitoring the territorial development of the pioneer areas

Texto completoWe decided to study the history of the indigenous populations of Northwestern Amazonia from the beginning of the XVIIth century till mid XVIIIth century. More precisely, we analyzed the role and the evolution of the Indian chiefdoms in the double context of interethnic relations and European colonial enterprises. During this period, the great European powers – France, England, Holland, Spain and Portugal – strove for increasing their colonial possessions in South America. That is why with the beginning of the conquest of American lands, on one side we can observe that political conflicts opposing the great powers in Europe are exported into the colonized areas. On the other side, Portuguese missionaries systematically developed catechizing villages among native populations in order to promote Portuguese colonization and a first urbanization of the Amazon Valley. All these interventions took advantage of political networks, inner hierarchies and power positions existing among native societies before the arrival of the Europeans. As a matter of fact, missions and military expeditions provoked continuous wars transforming Indian chiefdoms into preferential mediators

Texto completoDuring the last few decades, malaria has affected the lives of many people in the most impoverished regions of the world. In some regions, like the Amazon Region, this has also been a period of major social and environmental change. The State of Roraima, Brazil, has had to accept significant streams of migrants arriving mostly from the north-east of Brazil. As a result, the number of malaria cases has exploded. The main purpose of this work is to enlighten the dynamics of those environmental and social factors, as well as those linked with public policies, related to the evolution of Malaria in Roraima. The work uses Remote Sensing and GIS technologies, as well as a method to analyse spatial-temporal dynamics. The main results show that environmental factors, mainly related to the dynamics of the vector, have an influence at the local scale; social factors (population dynamics and cultures), play out more at middle scale; and public policy factors have an influence at regional scale

Texto completoIn contrast with southern Andean retro-foreland basins, which are characterized by continental sedimentation, tidal sedimentation was the rule in the Amazonian foreland basin during the Miocene. At this time, the Amazonian foreland basin is considered as "filled". Incipient tectonic loading was responsible for Late Miocene tidal transgression. In the Pliocene times, tectonic loading increased as a result of eastward thrust-propagation causing an increase in elevation and relief creation. Successive uplifts of the Iquitos flexural forebulge played a considerable role in the establishment of the modern Amazon drainage system by enhancing subsidence and separating an Andean drainage from a cratonic drainage system. The Amazonian drainage network is no younger than the Pliocene
