Resumen
Abstract Material and structure are the essential elements of all-dielectric metamaterials. Structure design for specific dielectric materials has been studied while the contribution of material and synergistic effect of material and structure have been overlooked in the past years. Herein, we propose a material–structure integrated design (MSID) methodology for all-dielectric metamaterials, increasing the degree of freedom in the metamaterial design, to comprehensively optimize microwave absorption performance and further investigate the contribution of material and structure to absorption. A dielectric metamaterial absorber with an ultra-broadband absorption from 5.3 to 18.0 GHz is realized. Theoretical calculation and numerical simulation demonstrate that the symphony of material and structure excites multiple resonance modes encompassing quarter-wavelength interference cancellation, spoof surface plasmon polariton mode, dielectric resonance mode and grating mode, which is essential to afford the desirable absorption performance. This work highlights the superiority of coupling of material and structure and provides an effective design and optimization strategy for all-dielectric metamaterial absorbers.

Resumen
With a deep study of the metamaterial, its unit cells have been widely extended from metals to dielectrics. The dielectric based unit cells attract much attention because of the advantage of easy preparation, tunability, and higher frequency response, and so forth. Using the conventional solid state method, we prepared a kind of incipient ferroelectrics (calcium titanate, CaTiO3) with higher microwave permittivity and lower loss, which can be successfully used to construct metamaterials. The temperature and frequency dependence of dielectric constant are also measured under different sintering temperatures. The dielectric spectra showed a slight permittivity decrease with the increase of temperature and exhibited a loss of 0.0005, combined with a higher microwave dielectric constant of ~167 and quality factorQof 2049. Therefore, CaTiO3is a kind of versatile and potential metamaterial unit cell. The permittivity of CaTiO3at higher microwave frequency was also examined in the rectangular waveguide and we got the permittivity of 165, creating a new method to test permittivity at higher microwave frequency.

Resumen
Although all-dielectric metamaterials offer a low-loss alternative to current metal-based metamaterials to manipulate light at the nanoscale and may have important applications, very few have been reported to date owing to the current nanofabrication technologies. We develop a new “nano–solid-fluid assembly” method using 15-nm TiO2 nanoparticles as building blocks to fabricate the first three-dimensional (3D) all-dielectric metamaterial at visible frequencies. Because of its optical transparency, high refractive index, and deep-subwavelength structures, this 3D all-dielectric metamaterial-based solid immersion lens (mSIL) can produce a sharp image with a super-resolution of at least 45 nm under a white-light optical microscope, significantly exceeding the classical diffraction limit and previous near-field imaging techniques. Theoretical analysis reveals that electric field enhancement can be formed between contacting TiO2 nanoparticles, which causes effective confinement and propagation of visible light at the deep-subwavelength scale. This endows the mSIL with unusual abilities to illuminate object surfaces with large-area nanoscale near-field evanescent spots and to collect and convert the evanescent information into propagating waves. Our all-dielectric metamaterial design strategy demonstrates the potential to develop low-loss nanophotonic devices at visible frequencies.

Resumen
Abstract Most optical metamaterials fabricated and studied to date employ metallic components resulting in significant losses, heat and overall low efficiencies. A new era of metamaterial physics is associated with all-dielectric meta-optics, which employs electric and magnetic Mie resonances of subwavelength particles with high refractive index for an optically induced magnetic response, thus underpinning a new approach to design and fabricate functional and practical metadevices. Here we review the recent developments in meta-optics and subwavelength dielectric photonics and demonstrate that the Mie resonances can play a crucial role in the realization of the unique functionalities of meta-atoms, also driving novel effects in the fields of metamaterials and nanophotonics. We discuss the recent research frontiers in all-dielectric meta-optics and uncover how Mie resonances can be employed for a flexible control of light with full phase and amplitude engineering, including unidirectional metadevices, highly transparent metasurfaces, non-linear nanophotonics and topological photonics.

Resumen
Frequency selective surface (FSS) has been extensively studied due to its potential applications in radomes, antenna reflectors, high-impedance surfaces and absorbers. Recently, a new principle of designing FSS has been proposed and mainly studied in two levels. In the level of materials, dielectric materials instead of metallic patterns are capable of achieving more functional performance in FSS design. Moreover, FSSs made of dielectric materials can be used in different extreme environments, depending on their electrical, thermal or mechanical properties. In the level of design principle, the theory of metamaterial can be used to design FSS in a convenient and concise way. In this review paper, we provide a brief summary about the recent progress in all-dielectric metamaterial frequency selective surface (ADM-FSS). The basic principle of designing ADM-FSS is summarized. As significant tools, Mie theory and dielectric resonator (DR) theory are given which illustrate clearly how they are used in the FSS design. Then, several design cases including dielectric particle-based ADM-FSS and dielectric network-based ADM-FSS are introduced and reviewed. After a discussion of these two types of ADM-FSSs, we reviewed the existing fabrication techniques that are used in building the experiment samples. Finally, issues and challenges regarding the rapid fabrication techniques and further development aspects are discussed.

Resumen
An analogy of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) based on all-dielectric metamaterial is theoretically demonstrated in this paper. The U-shaped Silicon-based metamaterial unit cell comprises a dipole antenna supported by one horizontal nanoscale bar and a quadrupolar antenna supported by two vertical nanoscale bars. The near-field coupling between the two antennas and the reduction of absorption loss lead to a narrow EIT-like transmission window with a high quality-factor of 130, which exhibits a refractive index sensitivity with a figure-of-merit of 29. The group delay of 0.75 ps and the group index of 2035 are obtained in the transmission window. Due to these unique optical properties, the proposed metamaterial structure can find many applications including slow-light devices, optical sensors, enhancement of non-linear processes, and storage of quantum information.

Resumen
An all-dielectric fishnet metamaterial (DFM) composed of multilayer dielectric structure with periodically patterned holes is proposed to generate left-handed behavior in optical frequency region. Different from the metallic fishnet negative index metamaterial realized by coupling the neighbouring functional layers along the propagation direction, this DFM owes its simultaneous negative permeability and permittivity to the hybrid coupled resonances in the same layer. Based on this configration, a wide-band and polarization-independent negative refraction with maximum figure of merit as large as 13.85 is obtained by a silicon-based DFM at 450 nm wavelength. Simple and easy to fabricate, this concept is believed to provide an alternative route to realize high-performance negative index metamateirals at optical frequencies.

Resumen
Water-based absorbers have shown great development potential in the past few years. In this paper, an all-dielectric transparent bi-directional water-based broadband metamaterial absorber is designed. The simulation results indicate that absorptance of the absorber is over 90% in 5.7–41.6 GHz, and its fraction bandwidth is 151.8%. The experimental results are greatly consistent with the simulations. The designed absorber has excellent performances of polarization insensitivity, oblique incidence stability and thermal stability. When the absorptance is more than 0.8, the maximum incident angle reaches 40° in TE mode and is over 60° in TM mode. In 0–80 °C, absorptance of the absorber is hardly changed. Because of the optical transparency of the designed absorber, it can be extensively used in stealth window weapons and electromagnetic compatibility equipment.

Resumen
In this work, we study the properties of slow electromagnetic surface TM-waves propagating along the planar waveguide structure involving the mu-negative metamaterial slab. The planar mu-negative metamaterial layer separates two semi-infinite regions: the plasma and the conventional dielectric. All media are assumed to be linear, homogeneous, and isotropic. The dispersion properties, the phase and group velocities, the spatial distribution of the electromagnetic fields of the TM mode in frequency range where the metamaterial has a negative permeability are under the consideration. The properties of this TM-eigenwave of the structure and two other TE modes are compared. It is studied the TM-eigenwave properties variation with metamaterail and plasma-like media properties changing. It is shown that for the considered structure, the properties of the TM mode depend significantly on the parameters of the plasma-like medium.

Resumen
In this paper, we designed a metamaterial absorber performed in microwave frequency band. This absorber is composed of E-shaped dielectrics which are arranged along different directions. The E-shaped all-dielectric structure is made of microwave ceramics with high permittivity and low loss. Within about 1 GHz frequency band, more than 86% absorption efficiency was observed for this metamaterial absorber. This absorber is polarization insensitive and is stable for incident angles. It is figured out that the polarization insensitive absorption is caused by the nearly located varied resonant modes which are excited by the E-shaped all-dielectric resonators with the same size but in the different direction. The E-shaped dielectric absorber contains intensive resonant points. Our research work paves a way for designing all-dielectric absorber.

Resumen
Composite right/left handed (CRLH) metamaterial structures designed based on one-dielectric-resonator (DR) scheme in an epsilon-negative host medium are discussed. The scheme is a combination of dielectric and metals, but can avoid several problems often met in the other schemes composed of all dielectric metamaterials. The structure under consideration is composed of stacked layers including TE-cut-off metallic mesh plates with holes and dielectric layers with 2-D array of DRs. A volumetric multilayered 2-D CRLH structure that is impedance-matched to free space can be designed by optimally adjusting electromagnetic couplings between neighboring dielectric layers through metallic mesh holes. In addition, the multilayered structure is promising for easy fabrication of the 3-D isotropic CRLH metamaterials, compared to the other structures reported previously. It can support balanced CRLH propagation not only in the in-plane direction, but also in the direction normal to the layers. The structure has strong uniaxial anisotropy and polarization dependence, but the dispersion diagram can have almost isotropic characteristics in a specific frequency region by appropriately designing the configuration parameters.

Resumen
Ceramic all-dielectric metamaterials are found to support very high Q resonances of the Fano-type, which until recently were largely attributed to the atomic physics phenomena. It is shown that proper arrangement of ceramic resonators in the metamaterial array allowsd for obtaining Q factors up to 15000. Thus high Q factors could be employed for new applications, in particular, for advanced sensing. An opportunity to design compact arrays that could be incorporated in a microwave sensor fed by a microstrip line is demonstrated. Numerical experiments have confirmed that Fano resonances in such arrays conserve high sensitivity to the dielectric permittivity of the controlled media.

Resumen
Novel design of a dual band microstrip circular patch antenna loaded with ENG (εnegative) metamaterial has been shown in the first section. Using ENG metamaterial instead of the conventional dielectric, unconventional TMδ10(1<δ<2) mode was produced to yield a dual band performance. Optimized parameters such as permittivity (ε1) and filling ratio (η) of metamaterials were selected with the aid of a MATLAB based parameter optimization algorithm, developed for all these sort of patch antennas. In the second section, a dual band circular patch antenna loaded with MNG (µ negative) metamaterial has been reported. An unconventional modified TMδ10(0<δ<1) mode has been produced along with conventional TM110mode due to using MNG metamaterial. Here also the optimum values of permeability (µ1) and filling ratio (η) for these sorts of patch antennas have been calculated from a MATLAB based parameter optimization algorithm. Both the proposed antennas provide good and resonance and satisfactory radiation performances (directivity, radiation efficiency, and gain) with a dual band performance.

Resumen
In this paper, we demonstrate a method of designing all-dielectric metamaterial frequency selective surface (FSS) with ceramic resonators in spatial arrangement. Compared with the traditional way, spatial arrangement provides a flexible way to handle the permutation and combination of different ceramic resonators. With this method, the resonance response can be adjusted easily to achieve pass/stop band effects. As an example, a stop band spatial arrangement all-dielectric metamaterial FSS is designed. Its working band is in 11.65–12.23[Formula: see text]GHz. By adjusting permittivity and geometrical parameters of ceramic resonators, we can easily modulate the resonances, band pass or band stop characteristic, as well as the working band.

Resumen
Abstract Dual-Fano resonances have been proposed with all-dielectric toroidal metamaterials in the microwave frequency. The presented structure consists of high permittivity rectangular bars of equal spacing. Two transparency peaks derived from the strong toroidal dipole with two modes can reach 0.92 and 0.9 at 10.51 GHz and 16.27 GHz, respectively. The excitation of these resonances could be explained by near-field distribution and multipoles scattered power. The trend of experimental results is virtually uniform with that of theoretical analysis and simulated curves. Such a compact all-dielectric structure may have important implications in many fields, such as ultra-sensitive sensors, stealth transmission, and so on.

Resumen
In this paper, we report an all-dielectric metamaterial terahertz biosensor, which exhibits a high Q factor of 35 at an 0.82 resonance peak. A structure with an electromagnetically induced transparency effect was designed and fabricated to perform a Mie resonance for the terahertz response. The biosensor exhibits a limit of detection of 100 pg/mL for cytokine interleukin 2 (IL-2) and a linear response for the logarithm of the concentration of IL-2 in the range of 100 pg/mL to 1 μg/mL. This study implicates an important potential for the detection of cytokines in serum and has potential application in the clinical detection of cytokine release syndrome.

Resumen
In this paper, a polarization selective broad/triple-band metamaterial absorber based on SiO2 all-dielectric is designed and studied. The absorber works in a long infrared band (8–14 μm). It is composed of cuboid and trapezoidal silica structures in the upper layer and metal plates in the lower layer. We calculate the absorption results of the metamaterial absorber at different polarization angles as the polarization angle of incident light increases from 0° to 90°; that is, the light changes from Ex polarization to Ey polarization. The results show that the absorption rate of the structure is more than 90% in the range of 8.16 to 9.61 μm when the polarization angle is 0°. When the polarization angle of the incident light is less than 45°, the absorption result of the absorber does not change significantly. When the polarization angle of the incident light is greater than 45°, three absorption peaks appear in the long infrared band, realizing the selectivity of the polarization of the incident light. When the polarization angle increases to 90°, the absorptivity of the two absorption peaks at λ = 9.7 μm and 12.3 μm reaches more than 85%. In addition, the sensitivity analysis of the length, width, and thickness of the all-dielectric metamaterial absorber and the calculation of the electric field of this structure are also carried out. The designed all-dielectric metamaterial absorber has polarization selection and perfect absorption characteristics and has a broad application prospect.

Resumen
It has been shown that the photonic bandgap of one-dimensional (1D) dielectric periodic thin films can vanish at the first Bragg condition for TM modes. Here, we address the case of 1D photonic crystal slabs formed by a chain of high-index dielectric particles with transversal confinement and show that the Bragg bandgap can vanish for both TE- and TM-like modes. Calculations using plane-wave expansion and finite-difference time-domain methods confirm that the PBG vanishes. PBG closure is explained as being a result of the interplay between the electric and magnetic dipole resonances of the isolated nanoparticle with Bragg resonance, as confirmed by calculating the electric and magnetic dipoles of the isolated nanobricks. This can be considered as a manifestation of the metamaterial behavior of the 1D system when using silicon as an underlying material. Our finding may have important consequences for the fields of photonic crystals and all-dielectric metamaterials.

Resumen
Metamaterial (MM) is emerging as a promising approach to manipulate electromagnetic waves, spanning from radio frequency to the optical region. In this paper, we employ an effect called electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) in all-dielectric MM structures to create a narrow transparent window in opaque broadband of the optical region (580-670 nm). Using dielectric materials instead of metals can mitigate the large non-radiative ohmic loss on the metal surface. The unit-cell of MM consists of Silicon (Si) bars on Silicon dioxide (SiO\(_{2}\)) substrate, in which two bars are directed horizontally and one bar is directed vertically. By changing the relative position and dimension of the Si bars, the EIT effect could be achieved. The optical properties of the proposed MM are investigated numerically using the finite difference method with commercial software Computer Simulation Technology (CST). Then, characteristic parameters of MM exhibiting EIT effect (EIT-MM), including Q-factor, group delay, are calculated to evaluate the applicability of EIT-MM to sensing and light confinement.

Resumen
Different from the conventional metamaterial absorbers (MAs), which used metal resonance surface and ternary structure (metal–dielectric-backplane), as an alternative route, the all-dielectric resonance surface (ADRS) made of single low-permittivity dielectric is proposed to design binary (dielectric backplane) metamaterial absorber (BMA). As an illustration, a triple-band BMA composed of ADRS with a metallic backplane is designed and fabricated, where the ADRS incorporates two dielectric layers with different hole-array structures. The absorbing mechanisms of this kind of absorber are analyzed via analyzing configurations of power loss density, electric field and magnetic field, as well as investigating dependences of absorbing properties on structure dimensions. The study indicates that the structural design of ADRS leads to reverse magnetic field rings distributed inside the dielectric, forming the strong couplings at the resonance frequencies. The proposed BMA relies on low-permittivity ADRS, with the rapid preparation and low cost greatly simplifying the design of MAs. The current concept is also suitable to design multi-band and broadband MAs worked at other bands, by changing the structural design of ADRS.

Resumen
Metamaterial is a left-handed medium used in antenna design to overcome the typical design's larger size and untunable nature. Because of its design with a high permittivity dielectric substrate and some deformation, the wireless sector may be able to solve this difficulty. Metamaterial antennas have a five-fold reduction in size, a higher bandwidth, a wider scanning angle, good beam performance, and electronically controlled targeting. Metamaterials antennas also improve antenna parameters such as frequency generation, gain, and bandwidth. This research aims to suggest the best metamaterials structure for improving antenna performance using plasma as a base. This study used 12 types of plasma with varying plasma frequencies and collision frequencies with four metamaterials structures: 1D-split ring structure, Symmetrical structure, Omega structure, and S structure. Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Studio Suite was used to design and simulate each structure with a sequence of plasma. At frequencies ranging from 1 GHz to 20 GHz, parameters including return loss, gain, radiation pattern, and Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) are used to assess an antenna's performance. Due to its electromagnetic qualities, the 1D-split ring construction has a better omnidirectional figure and VSWR value of 1.0039 dB. When all criteria were considered, the best results were obtained when using a 1D-split ring structure of the Plasma 9 (plasma frequency of 3.58528 x1011 rad/s and collision frequency of 1.3349 x109 1/s) produces an efficient return loss, high gain, better VSWR and a better omnidirectional figure among the four structures evaluated.

Resumen
In this work, a quadruple-band dielectric metamaterial absorber (MMA) was proposed and studied, which is composed of eight cuboid dielectric particles and a metallic ground plate. When electromagnetic wave is incident on the dielectric particles, dielectric particles act as resonators and produce abundant resonant modes, which can result in perfect absorption. In simulation, four absorption peaks are observed at 9.13, 9.62, 10.0 and 10.46[Formula: see text]GHz with 88%, 89%, 100% and 96%, respectively. By adjusting geometry parameters of the dielectric particles, dielectric MMAs with different bands can be obtained. Further investigation shows that the absorption peaks can be changed by increasing the permittivity of the dielectric. Based on the designing technique of using simple cuboid dielectric particles directly acting as resonator, this work provides a simple method to construct multiband all-dielectric MMA.

Resumen
Photonic hypercrystals (PHCs) are materials combining hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) with widely used photonic crystals. We found that finite-sized Type-I HMMs can support unique electromagnetic modes, which could be utilized in two-dimensional photonic crystals to achieve PHCs with twisted bands in the infrared region. Numerical investigation of the PHCs showed that the twisted bands have degenerate points that can support all-angle self-collimation effects. The behaviors of light beams change dramatically in such bands, which provides an effective method in controlling light propagation and can be applied as switching. The effect of the filling factor and the permittivity of the dielectric medium of the HMM on the twisted bands were studied. Furthermore, by considering the nonlinear effect of the dielectric layers, an all-optical switch working on the PHC twisted bands is proposed, which has low switching power and high extinction ratio (19.75 dB), superior to conventional HMM switches that require type transformation of metamaterial.
