Moritz, Dominique. "Children’s Developmental (Im)maturity: Aligning Conflicting Decisional Capacity Assessment Approaches in Australia". Laws 12, n.º 1 (13 de enero de 2023): 10. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/laws12010010.

Resumen
Children’s decision-making is complex. There are many factors that contribute to children’s decisional capacity including cognitive reasoning, developmental maturity, upbringing and circumstances. For healthcare decisions, Australian law acknowledges children’s autonomy, and permits mature children to consent to beneficial healthcare. Yet, it also protects them from making life-changing decisions that could contravene their best interests. The criminal law approaches to children’s decision-making in Australia’s jurisdictions involves holding older children fully responsible for their decision-making, regardless of circumstances or maturity. The two approaches conflict because health law offers a protective mechanism for children yet criminal law imposes a punitive approach to children’s decision-making. This article considers whether the dichotomous approaches for children’s capacity assessments in Australian law can be reconciled.

Resumen
Recent research in software engineering has highlighted the need to ensure alignment between business objectives, customer requirements and product development. If the business is to meet its strategic objectives, the Requirements Engineering (RE) activities must be executed in a manner such that they support these higher level objectives. A clear alignment between RE activities and the strategic objectives of the organization should underscore the merit of IT investment and the opportunities for competitive advantage that can be pursued as a result by the organization. This research begins with a detailed investigation of the complexity of decision-making during RE activities on business, product and project levels. Secondly, it investigates "in-project" level RE decisions and provides empirical findings from an industrial case study. The findings show that RE project related decisions are influenced by business and product requirements. Although the software developers in this study recognized the importance of developing software products that meet customer requirements and that are aligned with business objectives, they found it difficult to achieve this when the customer was external and the communication was a major problem. A lack of understanding the business strategy and a lack of communication between business, product and project level stakeholders were among the problems that are highlighted by this study.

Resumen
Background. High-quality health decisions are often defined as those that are both evidence informed and values congruent. A values-congruent decision aligns with what matters to those most affected by the decision. Values clarification methods are intended to support values-congruent decisions, but their effects on values congruence are rarely evaluated. Methods. We tested 11 strategies, including the 3 most commonly used values clarification methods, across 6 between-subjects online randomized experiments in demographically diverse US populations ( n1 = 1346, n2 = 456, n3 = 840, n4 = 1178, n5 = 841, n6 = 2033) in the same hypothetical decision. Our primary outcome was values congruence. Decisional conflict was a secondary outcome in studies 3 to 6. Results. Two commonly used values clarification methods (pros and cons, rating scales) reduced decisional conflict but did not encourage values-congruent decisions. Strategies using mathematical models to show participants which option aligned with what mattered to them encouraged values-congruent decisions and reduced decisional conflict when assessed. Limitations. A hypothetical decision was necessary for ethical reasons, as we believed some strategies may harm decision quality. Later studies used more outcomes and covariates. Results may not generalize outside US-based adults with online access. We assumed validity and stability of values during the brief experiments. Conclusions. Failing to explicitly support the process of aligning options with values leads to increased proportions of values-incongruent decisions. Methods representing more than half of values clarification methods commonly in use failed to encourage values-congruent decisions. Methods that use models to explicitly show people how options align with their values offer more promise for helping people make decisions aligned with what matters to them. Decisional conflict, while arguably an important outcome in and of itself, is not an appropriate proxy for values congruence.

Resumen
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose that transportation modal mix in global supply chains is a result of the strategic alignment between industry characteristics and supply chain strategies. Design/methodology/approach – Using annual US trade statistics and manufacturing industry data for the years 2002-2009 between the USA and its top 12 Asian trading partners, this study applies various regression methods to examine key factors associated with the transport modal decision. Findings – The results show that industry characteristics have an impact on the transportation modal mix in global supply chains. Manufacturing industries use more air freight and less ocean freight when facing positive sales surprises, high-monthly demand variation, a high-contribution margin ratio, a high cost of capital, and increased competition. Practical implications – The findings provide important insights for logistics managers and freight forwarders. While transportation cost remains an important concern, a logistics manager must also consider non-cost factors such as competition, working capital, and demand uncertainties in their modal decisions. Freight forwarders should be supply chain solution providers who consider all of these industry factors and suggest a proper mix of transportation modes for their customers. Originality/value – This study is among the first efforts to examine the impact of industry characteristics on the transportation modal mix in global supply chains. This study first develops a theoretical framework for the modal choice decision for international transportation movements and then, using an extensive and innovative data set, provides new findings regarding current air freight practices in global supply chains.

Resumen
Abstract We find that the requirement of model interpretations to be faithful is vague and incomplete. With interpretation by textual highlights as a case study, we present several failure cases. Borrowing concepts from social science, we identify that the problem is a misalignment between the causal chain of decisions (causal attribution) and the attribution of human behavior to the interpretation (social attribution). We reformulate faithfulness as an accurate attribution of causality to the model, and introduce the concept of aligned faithfulness: faithful causal chains that are aligned with their expected social behavior. The two steps of causal attribution and social attribution together complete the process of explaining behavior. With this formalization, we characterize various failures of misaligned faithful highlight interpretations, and propose an alternative causal chain to remedy the issues. Finally, we implement highlight explanations of the proposed causal format using contrastive explanations.

Resumen
To date there has been little research into the way genetic improvement decisions are made in practice on Australian farms. This type of knowledge is important for guiding the design of programs to increase the use of genetic information and thereby the rate of genetic gain in animal production systems. This paper describes an approach to understanding farm decision making in order to improve the design of services to increase the use of genetic information in the Australian dairy industry. A mixed-method approach involving a national survey and regional focus groups was used to determine farmers’ perceptions of the genetic information system overall and the key features of bull selection decisions and information sources. The current genetic information system was found to have a strong reputation for ease of access, use and fit with the way farmers evaluated bulls. In the focus groups the farmers described their decision process as having an ‘ideal cow’ in mind that fitted their farming system (e.g. balancing survival, milk volume, milk components, mammary features, fertility, milking speed, etc.). Bull proofs were then screened to identify a batch of eligible bulls that were further screened for their specific situation. Focus groups of advisers generally concurred with the process described by farmers. Further, farmers tended to rely on one or two main information sources in making decisions. To address the issue of greater alignment between farmer decision making and use of genetic information through industry organisations requires a coordinated strategy and a comprehensive development program. Suggestions for activities to this end are outlined.

Resumen
In this article, I outline five different ways in which the talent acquisition function can contribute to strategic business objectives. First, it is necessary to hire employees who are empathetic to the business values, as talent which is able to empathetically connect to end users of business propositions can build enduring value. Second, while building firm-specific human capital has been seen as a difficult project, appropriate talent acquisition practices could signal how specific forms of human capital can flourish in unique organisational ecosystems. Third, talent acquisition can help in building a healthy mix of perspectives by drawing talent from outside to collaborate with internal talent and ensure that there is a constant regeneration of strategic perspectives. Fourth, the talent acquisition function can anticipate technological disruptions and identify talent with high learning agility that can help navigate organisations through such disruptions. Fifth, the talent acquisition practices can resonate with business strategy by being cognizant of business cycles of expansion and efficiency in enabling hiring decisions.

Resumen
Background and objectivesIn Bahrain, maintaining life support at all costs is a cultural value considered to be embedded in the Islamic religion. We explore end-of-life decision making for brain dead patients in an Arab country where medical cultures are dominated by Western ideas and the lay culture is Eastern.MethodsIn-depth interviews were conducted from February to April 2018 with 12 Western-educated Bahraini doctors whose medical practice often included end-of-life decision making. Discussions were about who should make withdrawal of life support decisions, how decisions are made and the context for decision making. To develop results, we used the inductive method of thematic analysis.ResultsInformants considered it difficult to engage non-medical people in end-of-life decisions because of people’s reluctance to talk about death and no legal clarity about medical responsibilities. There was disagreement about doctors’ roles with some saying that end-of-life decisions were purely medical or purely religious but most maintaining that such decisions need to be collectively owned by medicine, patients, families, religious advisors and society. Informants practised in a legal vacuum that made their ethics interpretations and clinical decision making idiosyncratic regarding end-of-life care for brain dead patients. Participants referred to contrasts between their current practice and previous work in other countries, recognising the influences of religious and cultural dimensions on their practice in Bahrain.ConclusionsEnd-of-life decisions challenge Western-trained doctors in Bahrain as they grapple with aligning respect for local culture with their training in the ethical practice of Western medicine.

Resumen
Understanding the relationship between operations management practices, capacity expansion decisions, and the mediating role of outsourcing is essential for organizations seeking to optimize their operations in dynamic market environments. Therefore, this study is aimed to empirically evaluate the relationship between operations management practices and capacity expansion decision with mediating role of outsourcing strategy. Pharmaceutical industry was targeted to gather respondent’s data in order to statistically evaluate. 175 respondent’s data from 18 pharmaceutical companies were incorporated and examined using SmartPLS 4.0. As a result, operations management practices play a crucial role in evaluating the need for capacity expansion, optimizing processes, analyzing risks, and aligning operations with strategic goals. However, the outsourcing strategy acts as a mediating factor that influences the final decision. The outsourcing strategy considers cost-effectiveness, flexibility, core competency focus, risk management, and strategic alignment. By incorporating the outsourcing strategy, organizations can make informed decisions that maximize operational efficiency and support long-term growth objectives.

Resumen
Online shopping marketing strategy requires some efforts for increasing the purchasing decision by the customers. Therefore, understanding the factors which affect such purchasing decision if important. This study explores the effects of company image, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), promotions, and brand image on purchasing decision. The data were collected from 123 respondents from the customers of Tokopedia online business in Sidoarjo and Surabaya, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using structural equation modelling techniques (SEM-PLS) using Warp-PLS., It was found that both company image and CSR significantly influence purchasing decisions, while promotions do not exhibit a significant effect. Brand image also emerged as a significant positive influences on purchasing decisions. Additionally, the study investigated the mediating role of purchase intention in these relationships. It was revealed that purchase intention partially mediated the influence of promotions and brand image on purchasing decisions but did not mediate the effects of company image and CSR. The discussion further underscores the significance of company image and CSR in shaping purchasing decisions, aligning with prior research. However, discrepancies with previous studies were acknowledged, suggesting avenues for further exploration.. Suggestions for future research include conducting studies with larger and more diverse samples, employing longitudinal designs to track evolving consumer behavior, and exploring additional variables such as pricing strategies and customer service.

Resumen
The enforcement of mandatory education programs facilitates funding for primary and secondary schools, aligning with legal provisions designed to boost student engagement. Nevertheless, a stark reality persists, with numerous children unable to attend school, leading to dropouts and an inability to progress. A key factor contributing to this issue is the School Operational Assistance (BOS) not covering essential educational costs like uniforms, books, and shoes. The challenge lies in identifying suitable recipients for Poor Student Aid, hindered by insufficient categorized support data. Addressing this, a targeted solution involves designing a system, utilizing the Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP) Method. Decisions regarding poor student aid approval would then be grounded in rational, objective considerations. Proactively implementing a structured decision support system is crucial in assigning significance to criteria values and weights, tailored to SD Negeri Baddoka Makassar's needs. Through AHP, the selection process becomes more transparent, measurable, and accountable. The resulting decisions have the potential to enhance the efficiency of providing assistance to those genuinely in need.

Resumen
This study aims to address the critical issue of inadequate research policies in the context of growing interest in initial public offerings (IPOs). Its primary objective is to explore the complex dynamics governing IPO investment decisions and the over-subscription perceptions among Nepalese investors. It employs a quantitative research design and a questionnaire administered to 150 respondents. It adopts a theoretical framework that includes firm-specific and general factors, aligning with Velmurugan et al.’s (2015) perspective. The findings demonstrate that factors, including the corporate profile, financial position, IPO size, short-term returns, market rumors, goodwill, and sector performance, significantly influence IPO investment decisions among Nepalese investors. These findings emphasize the pivotal role of a company’s financial health for both short-term and long-term investment gains (Ferdous et al., 2021). Investors prioritize corporate profile, financial position, and short-term returns when making IPO investment decisions. This research contributes to better-informed decision-making for investors, assists IPO-issuing companies in increasing their attractiveness, and offers guidance to regulatory bodies in ensuring transparency in financial information. This study’s relevance lies in its contribution to improving IPO investment decisions, thereby benefiting investors, companies, and regulatory bodies in the context of the Nepalese stock market.

Resumen
As artificial intelligence (AI) systems are becoming increasingly autonomous and will soon be able to make decisions on their own about what to do, AI researchers have started to talk about the need to align AI with human values. The AI ‘value alignment problem’ faces two kinds of challenges—a technical and a normative one—which are interrelated. The technical challenge deals with the question of how to encode human values in artificial intelligence. The normative challenge is associated with two questions: “Which values or whose values should artificial intelligence align with?” My concern is that AI developers underestimate the difficulty of answering the normative question. They hope that we can easily identify the purposes we really desire and that they can focus on the design of those objectives. But how are we to decide which objectives or values to induce in AI, given that there is a plurality of values and moral principles and that our everyday life is full of moral disagreements? In my paper I will show that although it is not realistic to reach an agreement on what we, humans, really want as people value different things and seek different ends, it may be possible to agree on what we do not want to happen, considering the possibility that intelligence, equal to our own, or even exceeding it, can be created. I will argue for pluralism (and not for relativism!) which is compatible with objectivism. In spite of the fact that there is no uniquely best solution to every moral problem, it is still possible to identify which answers are wrong. And this is where we should begin the value alignment of AI.

Resumen
AbstractThis paper examines whether rice adoption decision differs between sole decision-making and collaborative decision-making in which household members jointly decide on rice varietal selection. Overall, the results show that the majority of rice farmers currently cultivate older rice varieties. The average varietal age is 22 years. Adopters and non-adopters are significantly different in several observed characteristics; however, most of the differences are small. Specifically, between adopter and non-adopters, there is a statistically significant difference in the average varietal age of rice grown, the number of plots owned, varietal trait preferences, seed sources, contact with agricultural extension agents and risk preference. The results of the double-hurdle regression estimation are unconvincing for a difference between household decision-making structures, indicating that it does not matter who in the farm household makes the decisions on rice varietal selection. To encourage the adoption of improved rice varieties and reduce the average varietal age, the focus should be on improving access to agricultural land and extension contact. Besides, aligning varietal trait with farmers’ preferences and organising farm demonstrations is crucial.

Resumen
Abstract Aligning resource choice and operations decision in the value chain (input-process-output) is one of the most important functions of a firm not only to make its operations to be competitively distinct but also very important for the firm’s growth and survival. However, the role of competitively distinct operations in maintaining better performance in dynamic and changing business environment has remained unclear. Therefore, this paper examined the relationship between competitively distinct operations, high efficiency operations and operational performance (research model one). In the similar manner the relationship between turbulent business environments, operational performance and financial performance were also examined (research model two). The study was conducted considering survey responses from 61 small and medium size enterprises from Finland. Correlation test and structural path modelling was used to test and validate the proposed hypothesis and research model. The results showed that competitively distinct operation enables high efficiency operations, which influences operational performance positively and significantly. In the similar manner, operational performance influences financial performance positively and significantly. Likewise, turbulent business environment was found to have a negative impact on operational and financial performance. The research findings are found to be adequate enough to highlight the importance of aligning resource choice and operations decisions in reducing the impact of turbulent business environment on organizational performance.

The process by which children in the New York City Public Schools are identified and provided one of the several types of substance abuse prevention education or intervention services is presented as a formal model. The aligning of the students with services is compared to a psychological diagnostic-prescriptive process, and it is concluded that the school personnel, using observations available to them, make essentially the same decisions trained mental health professionals would. The types of student problems matched to each prevention service is shown in terms of comparable match between DSM III diagnostic categories and suitable treatment procedures. The exact nature of the decision model, the differential diagnoses, the different prevention dynamics, and the match of student-to-service are displayed schematically.

As shareholder activism has grown both in its scope and influence, management teams are under increasing pressure to justify their decisions around the allocation of capital – whether it be through dividends, share buybacks, an expansion project, M&A or a greenfield project. However, for the oil and gas sector, much like the mining sector, it has been historically difficult to demonstrate continued excellence in capital decision making. In the past, capital intensive, long-dated projects (multi-billion dollar LNG developments) and large-scale M&A saw returns and pay-offs that were both distant and uncertain. Now, with so much investor scrutiny and focus on short term performance, demonstrated capital discipline is paramount – oil and gas leaders must think very carefully about where they allocate capital. Although they present their own challenges, capital allocation decisions, unlike commodity prices or the macroeconomic climate, are within the control of companies, and if a model can be developed to deliver long-term value, these decisions will position shareholders and their management teams well for the future. This paper will chart the performance of a sample of oil and gas companies against their decisions around capital allocation and cost-reduction. The paper will demonstrate to oil and gas leaders the importance of aligning their organisational strategies and balance sheet investments to create future value for shareholders.

Resumen
Background: Agro-food supply chains possess specific characteristics due to the diverse nature of products involved and contribute to all three pillars of sustainability, making the optimal design of a sustainable agro-food supply chain a complex problem. Therefore, efficient models incorporating the unique characteristics of such chains are essential for making optimal supply chain decisions and achieving economically and environmentally sustainable agro-food supply chains that contribute to global food security. Methods: This article presents a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programing model that integrates agricultural-related strategic decisions into the tactical design of an agro-food supply chain. The model considers transportation, inventory, processing, demand fulfilment, and waste disposal decisions. It also accounts for seasonality and perishability, ensuring a comprehensive approach to sustainability. The model aims to maximize the total generated profits across the supply chain while simultaneously minimizing CO2 emissions as a measure of environmental impact. Results: By implementing the model on a sugar beet supply chain in the Netherlands, strategic crop rotation farm schedules for the crop rotation cycle and the optimum supply network decisions are obtained. Resumen
ObjectiveAdvance care planning (ACP) assists people to identify their goals, values and treatment preferences for future care. Ideally, preferences are documented in an advance care directive (ACD) and used by doctors to guide medical decision-making should the patient subsequently lose their decision-making capacity. However, studies demonstrate that ACDs are not always adhered to by doctors in clinical practice. We aim to describe the attitudes and perspectives of doctors regarding ACD adherence and the utility of ACDs in clinical practice.DesignFace-to-face semistructured interviews were conducted using three case-based vignettes to explore doctors’ decision-making and attitudes towards ACDs. Transcripts were analysed using a thematic analysis.SettingDoctors from a variety of medical specialties and with varying experience levels were recruited from a large tertiary hospital in Melbourne, Australia.ParticipantsA total of 21 doctors were interviewed, 48% female (10/21). Most (19/21) reported having experience using ACDs.ResultsFour themes were identified: aligning with patient preferences (avoiding unwanted care, prioritising autonomy and anticipating family opposition), advocating best interests (defining futile care, relying on clinical judgement, rejecting unreasonable decisions and disregarding legal consequences), establishing validity (doubting rigour of the decision-making process, questioning patients’ ability to understand treatment decisions, distrusting outdated preferences and seeking confirmation) and translating written preferences into practice (contextualising patient preferences, applying subjective terminology and prioritising emergency medical treatment).ConclusionsACDs provide doctors with opportunities to align patient preferences with treatment and uphold patient autonomy. However, doctors experience decisional conflict when attempting to adhere to ACDs in practice, especially when they believe that adhering to the ACD is not in the patients’ best interests, or if they doubt the validity of the ACD. Future ACP programmes should consider approaches to improve the validity and applicability of ACDs. In addition, there is a need for ethical and legal education to support doctors’ knowledge and confidence in ACP and enacting ACDs.

Resumen
Objective: This paper aims to investigate the impact of specified behavioral biases on investors' stock trading decisions in North India. It has been observed that most of the research works are based on financial theories, which affect investment decisions. But besides the theories nowadays, behavioral biases also play an important role in investment decisions, which was less focused in the previous literature. Methods: The study used primary data collected from a sample from North Indian States (Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab) through a structured questionnaire to analyze the impact of specified behavioral biases on investors' stock trading decisions. We used structural equation modelling to find out the significant impact of behavioral biases on stock trading and investment decisions. Findings: The investigation determined that the majority of the designated cognitive biases, such as the Overconfidence Bias, the Representativeness Bias, and the Herding Bias, exert a significant influence on the decisions about stock trading and investment made by investors. Novelty: The ample research in this domain has primarily occurred in various countries, with only a limited number of studies conducted specifically at the Indian level. Nevertheless, based on the literature review, it is evident that this study is groundbreaking in North India. The objective of this research is to enhance the effectiveness of financial advisors by gaining a deeper understanding of the psychological aspects of clients. This, in turn, will aid in developing portfolios tailored to individual behavior, aligning with client preferences. Recognizing and addressing behavioral biases is crucial for individual investors as they strive to make informed and successful financial decisions. Keywords: Behavioral Biases, Overconfidence (OC) bias, Representativeness Bias (RB), Herding Bias (HB), Structural Equation Modelling

Resumen
The environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions from buildings—especially in global cities such as Toronto—is well documented. Green mitigation of new and existing buildings has also been researched. Few studies, however, have focused on the decision to build or retrofit green. Are key stakeholders in Toronto’s office building sector aligning their decisions to achieve sustainable environmental goals? Do they support LEED certification regardless of the impact on market valuation? Are tenants willing to pay higher rents in LEED office buildings? The study first obtained data on 16 LEED and 52 conventional buildings to determine if LEED certification has a significant impact on net asking rent. Pearson correlation and linear regression analysis did not find LEED certification to be statistically significant in explaining the variance in net asking rent (market value). The second stage included interviews with senior executives engaged in Toronto’s office building sector. The expert informtabants were asked to assess if financial drivers are the deciding factor in decisions to pursue LEED certification. They concurred that LEED certification is not the primary driver. It is a combination of numerous factors that overall have an impact on a firm’s financial bottom line.

Resumen
e22541 Background: As cost decreases and benefits become more well known, more individuals are seeking genetic testing. Physicians, genetic counselors, and other healthcare professionals play a critical role in explaining the benefits and limitations of genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes. Here we discuss our experience creating a web-based application, utilized by a variety of stakeholders, to determine whether patients are likely to meet clinical testing criteria set forth by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). Methods: To address the challenge of efficiently and accurately determining medical necessity for hereditary cancer genetic testing, we developed a pilot study to assess the utility of Criterion beta, a web-based pilot application. A questionnaire was sent to laboratory staff, genetic counselor assistants, genetic counselors, and physicians to assess the accuracy and usability of Criterion beta. 14 respondents each evaluated three mock patient profiles. They were initially asked to determine if the patients met current NCCN criteria for hereditary cancer genetic testing without using any alternative references or resources. Respondents with no prior training using Criterion were then asked to answer the exact same questions using Criterion beta. Results: Results of this pilot study indicate that implementation of Criterion beta leads to more accurate decision-making. Preliminary survey data shows that response accuracy for NCCN criteria determinations improved by 72% with the use of Criterion beta (see Figure 1). In addition, 85% of respondents reported that the application would allow them to routinely make more accurate decisions regarding who meets NCCN criteria for hereditary cancer genetic testing. Conclusions: As the demand for genetic testing increases, accessibility of professional guidelines like NCCN is important for multiple entities involved in the testing process, especially those unfamiliar with the concept of medical necessity. Clinically-based tools like Criteron beta are critical in this process because guidelines can be complex to navigate. In addition, through its ease of use, Criteron beta can better align implementation of genetic testing among high-risk populations. It may also place indirect pressure on industry stakeholders to align their eligibility requirements with clinical standards like NCCN, ultimately serving the best interests of patients in need of preventative care.

In a rapidly changing business environment, one may recognise the words the only thing constant in life is change by French author Francois de la Rockefoucauld. Yet, with on-going change, it can be difficult to know what to do and how to do it. The world out there is harsh and competition is fierce. Indeed, the world is changing at a rapid pace. Therefore, both public and private sectors have to plan for the future and prepare for any unforeseen circumstance. This paper will discuss the link between Strategic Human Resource Management, Human resources, Performance and Reward, what we know, and the future direction of Strategic Human Resource Management. Strategic Human Resource Management involves making those decisions that define the overall vision, mission, core values and objectives of the organisation, thus determining the most effective utilisation of its resources. Walker (1992: 16) states that Strategic Management enables managers to respond to environmental changes based on a defined business mission, vision and values. Strategies are directional plans that guide management actions in the pursuit of opportunities. In essence, strategies point the way for the most promising changes. They are plans that give direction and address people related business issues. Human Resource strategies are important because they help determine how to manage people in relation to business strategies. Strategic Human Resource Management aligns Human Resources, which is necessary for the success of the organisation.

Resumen
AbstractPrototypes are critical design artifacts, and recent studies have established the ability of prototypes to facilitate communication. However, prior work suggests that novice designers often fail to perceive prototypes as effective communication tools, and struggle to rationalize design decisions made during prototyping tasks. To understand the interactions between communication and prototypes, design pitches from 40 undergraduate engineering design teams were collected and qualitatively analysed. Our findings suggest that students used prototypes to explain and persuade, aligning with prior studies of design practitioners. The results also suggest that students tend to use prototypes to justify design decisions and adverse outcomes. Future work will seek to understand novice designers’ use of prototypes as communication tools in further depth. Ultimately, this work will inform the creation of pedagogical strategies to provide students with the skills needed to effectively communicate design solutions and intent.

Resumen
Abstract In response to increasing concerns of society about environmental degradation and increasing demands for a transition to a more sustainable society, the business companies are increasingly active in aligning their processes and services with a sustainability agenda. Production, distribution and supply of goods and services require material and energy consumption, having an impact on natural resources both quantitatively and qualitatively, generating waste, pollution and disrupting ecosystems. Ecobusiness intelligence is the capacity of people, processes and applications/tools to organize business information, to facilitate consistent access to them and analyse them in order to improve management decisions, for better performance management of the organizations that are increasingly pressed to synchronize their processes and services with a sustainable development agenda, through the development, testing and implementation of decision support software. This paper advances the idea that BI methods and tools have an important but as yet not well studied role to play in helping organizations implement and monitor sustainable and socially responsible business practices.

Resumen
Mini-grids need to imitate the transition path of a traditional grid to maintain their position as a sustainable energy access alternative, while aligning with the objectives of the seventh Sustainable Development Goal. One such strategy is implementing smart-metering solutions to improve business viability and remote monitoring of distributed mini-grid assets. However, selecting smart meters presents a significant challenge for mini-grid operators, primarily due to the installation costs involved and the complexities associated with operating mini-grids in rural areas. Against this backdrop, the current case study’ demonstrates the utility of multi-criteria decision aids, such as stochastic multi-criteria acceptability analysis (SMAA), to assist mini-grid operators in making informed decisions concerning smart-meter selection. In addition, practitioners’ narratives elucidate how implementing smart metering can function as part of mini-grid operations in rural areas. Furthermore, narratives highlight the importance of considering context-specific conditions to avoid the under-utilisation of smart meters.
