When developing a user-oriented product, it is crucial to consider users’ affective needs. Various semantic differential (SD) methods have been used to identify affect regarding materials, and this is the most important property in products. This study aims to determine which of the three conventional SD methods (absolute evaluation 1 [AE 1], absolute evaluation 2 [AE 2], or relative evaluation [RE]) is most effective for affective evaluation. Affective evaluation was performed for vehicle instrument panels by each of these three SD methods. Two quantitative analysis methods (correlation analysis and repeated-measures ANOVA) were used to examine the performance (sample distinguishability) of each evaluation method, and it was found that both AE 2 and RE produced better results than AE 1. The correlation coefficients and p-values in correlation analysis were slightly better for RE than for AE 2. In conclusion, an affective evaluation produced better results when pairwise samples (especially one sample pair) were presented, indicating that maintaining distinct samples is very important. The clearer the difference in comparison targets is, the more accurate the evaluation results.

Introduction Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mental illness marked by extreme swings in the mood, energy, and thinking. Although it’s not an official symptom of the disease, some research suggests that it also may affect the empathy. Objectives To investigate empathic responding in patients with BD in euthymic state of illness and to determine associated factors. Methods A cross-sectional and descriptive study of 78 patients followed for bipolar disorder, during euthymia, at the psychiatric outpatient clinic at CHU Hédi Chaker in Sfax. We used a socio-demographic and clinical data sheet and the Questionnaire of Cognitive And Affective Empathy (QCAE) to assess empathy with its two dimensions : “Affective empathy” and “Cognitive empathy”. Results The average age was 36.27 years, the sex ratio was 5.5. Bipolar I disorder was diagnosed in 88.5% of patients. The mean age of onset was 27.73 years, and the mean duration of illness was 8.4 years. 78.2% of patients had a good adherence to treatment. 60.3% of them had residual depressive symptoms during eutymia. QCAE total score was 72.49. (Maximum possible score 124) Cognitive empathy score was 43.21. (Maximum possible score 76) Affective empathy score was 29.36. (Maximum possible score 48) Affective empathy was associated with female gender (p=0), good adherence to treatment (p=0.01) and residual depressive symptoms (p=0.001). Conclusions Our study shows that bipolar patients have fairly good levels of empathy. However, in order to better substantiate empathy in BD, comparative studies seem necessary. Abstract Playing computer games is a predominantly emotional than rational process. Video games with affect-based adaptation measure player’s behavior signals and recognize player’s emotional states in order to adapt specific game features in a dynamic manner and to improve player’s engagement, immersion, excitement, and challenge. The present review deals with models for the presentation of emotions, techniques for measuring behavioral signals, emotion recognition and adaptation mechanisms applied in video games with affective feedback including methods for their assessment and validation. Studies using self-reports, observational methods and psychophysiological measurements of both autonomic and central nervous systems including processing and interpretation of signals are systematically reviewed with regard to their results concerning emotional adaptation in games. Next, the article provides a comparative analysis of affect-based adaptation methods and techniques applied in 14 adaptive video games developed in last ten years. Based on this comparison, we summarized future directions in research, design and evaluation of video games with affective adaption.

Background: To empirically evaluate a cognitive affective model of physical activity. This bidirectional, cyclical model hypotheses that executive control processes directly influence habitual engagement in exercise and also directly subserve the exercise-induced affective response to acute exercise associated with future physical activity. Methods: The present study employed a one-week prospective, multi-site design. Participant recruitment and data collection occurred at two separate University sites (one in the United States and the other in Canada). Participants completed a bout of treadmill exercise, with affect and arousal assessed before, during and after the bout of exercise. Subjective and objective measures of executive function were assessed during this visit. Following this laboratory visit, seven days of accelerometry were employed to measure habitual engagement in physical activity. Results: Within our inactive, young adult sample, we observed some evidence of 1) aspects of executive function were associated with more light-intensity physical activity in the future (1-week later) (r = 0.36, 95% CI = -0.03 to 0.66, P = 0.07), 2) aspects of executive function were associated with post-exercise affect (r = -0.39, 95% CI = -0.67 to -0.03, P = 0.03) and forecasted affect (r =0.47, 95% CI = 0.11 to 0.72, P = 0.01), and 3) aspects of acute exercise arousal and affect were associated with current mild-intensity physical activity behavior (r = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.04 to 0.68,P = 0.03). Conclusion: We demonstrate partial support of a cognitive-affective model of physical activity.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare pain as reported by outpatients with fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and low back pain, in view of designing more adequate physical therapy treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A Portuguese version of the McGill Pain Questionnaire - where subjects are asked to choose, from lists of pre-categorized words, one or none that best describes what they feel - was used to assess pain intensity and quality of 64 patients, of which 24 had fibromyalgia, 22 had osteoarthritis, and 18 had low back pain. The pre-categorized words were organized into 4 major classes -- sensory, affective, evaluative, and miscellaneous. RESULTS: Patients with fibromyalgia reported, comparatively, more intense pain through their choice of pain descriptors, both sensory and affective; they also chose a higher number of words from these classes than patients in the other groups and were the only ones to choose specific affective descriptors such as "vicious", "wretched", "exhausting", "blinding". CONCLUSION: Assuming that each disease presents unique qualities of pain experience, and that these can be pointed out by means of this questionnaire by patients' choice of specific groups of words, the findings suggest that fibromyalgia include not only a physical component, but also a psycho-emotional component, indicating that they require both emotional/affective and physical care.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the learning process, which requires learning to be done remotely. Likewise, the learning evaluation process is also carried out remotely. Evaluation is an important part of a learning process because with the evaluation of learning a teacher knows the weaknesses and strengths in the learning that has been done and can be used to monitor the progress of students. Moreover, Islamic religious education is something that is very much needed in social life, because being given Islamic religious education, can foster and guide students to be religious, moral, and dignified. The provision of Islamic religious education is also an effort to realize the goal of national education, namely having religious spiritual strength. This study aims to describe the pattern of evaluation of distance learning and the obstacles faced in evaluating distance learning in the subjects of Islamic Religious Education class VIII at SMP N 13 Surakarta and SMP N 1 Mojolaban. This research is a type of qualitative research, so that in conducting data analysis using qualitative descriptive analysis methods. As for the data collection using interviews, documentation, and observation. The results of this study found that the pattern of implementing distance learning evaluations in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains had been carried out following the evaluation stages, namely planning, implementing, processing, and interpreting data, and reporting evaluation results. And for the obstacles faced during the evaluation of distance learning, namely in the cognitive realm, the test questions are only objective and there are no HOTS questions, so they are not effective in measuring children's understanding. Constraints in the affective domain cannot measure the value of attitudes in the social sphere. And for the psychomotor domain, the assessment is in the form of making practice videos, which makes students complain that there is no internet quota to send assignments because the average student system is in the middle to lower economy.

Abstract: The use of arts-based approaches in professional education in health and social care has gathered momentum in the last decade and their effectiveness has been well documented. There are helpful models in the education literature that begin to explain how these creative methods work in learning and practice, and that assert the significance of an emotional or affective level of learning. However, the process remains elusive, almost a ‘given’. A more cross-disciplinary analysis of affective learning is needed to guide arts-based methods and more robust evaluation of their use in health and social care education and practice. This paper identifies different roles that can be taken by the practice educator with a review of those theoretical models of affective learning that underpin them to help understand how and why arts-based approaches are effective.

Introduction: While praise is generally pleasant and criticism unpleasant, individual differences in response to social evaluations arise from distinct personal traits and states. Here, we investigate how processing of self-referential praise and criticism varies with personal attributes related to anxiety and depression, two highly prevalent and often chronic affective conditions. Methods: Ninety-three healthy participants first completed questionnaires for anxiety- and depression-related traits and states, and then they were scheduled to perform an evaluation task to rate praise and criticism for pleasantness and truthfulness. Results: Fear of negative evaluation positively correlated with unpleasantness of criticism. Trait- and state-anxiety and depression were positively associated with the truthfulness of criticism but negatively associated with that of praise. We further divided participants into high- and low-scoring groups based on the medians of their scores of each scale that displayed significant correlations with comment ratings and found group differences in their responses to praise and criticism. Discussion: The findings suggest that more highly anxious and depressed individuals may be subject to negatively-distorted self-representations in response to self-referential evaluations, thus exhibiting attenuated rejection for criticism or reduced acceptance for praise, which may have important implications not only for facilitating daily social interactions but also for subclinical and clinical diagnosis and treatment given that affective and cognitive processing of self-referential evaluations serves as a critical process exhibiting the sense of the self.

Legionella is the causative agent of Legionnairesâ disease which hospitalizes 8,000 to 18,000 people in the United States each year. The disease in transmitted through inhalation or aspiration of water containing the bacterium and can be acquired within the home. Studies have found that 0-37% of domestic water heaters contain Legionella, making household hot water systems a potential route of exposure. The objective of this research was to evaluate different methods for testing environmental samples for Legionella pneumophila and to analyze potable water conditions that affect survival of free living Legionella pneumophila in hot water tanks. Three heat pretreatment methods (50ºC for 30 minutes, 55ºC for 15 minutes, and 60ºC for 3 minutes) were not effective at recovering Legionella in this study. There was no statistically significant difference between the three acid pretreatment methods that were tested (pH 2.0 with a neutralizing solution, pH 2.2, and the CDC method). Six media (BCYE, DGVP, PCV, GPCV, CCVC, and GPVA) exhibited similar Legionella recovery, except for when high levels of non-Legionella organisms were present, in which case BCYE demonstrated lower recovery. When disinfectant was present, if sodium thiosulfate was not added before the disinfectant, Legionella recovery was lower. However, this result was not statistically significant for free chlorine until after 5 minutes. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (up to 67.5 cfu/ml) and pyocyanin (up to 9 mg/l) did not have an effect on Legionella recovery under the tested conditions. Environmental factors affecting survival of free living Legionella pneumophila in hot water tanks were also studied. After one day exposure in small-scale simulated water heaters at 55ºC, viable Legionella could not be recovered. At 44ºC, Legionellae were recovered after one day but only at very low levels after eight days. Between 23 and 37ºC, Legionella could survive longer than eight days. Copper (Cu2+) concentrations above 2160 ppb were found to be toxic to Legionella, but iron (Fe3+) between 1 and 2160 ppb did not affect survival. Above pH 11 survival was greatly reduced. No effect was observed between pH 5-10. When glass fiber filters were added to the reactors and they were seeded with tap water and sediment slurry, Legionellae were retained in 7 of 16 reactors for 327 days. The results of this work will assist in optimal identification of Legionella via microbial analysis of potable water samples, thereby assisting in prevention and diagnosis of factors contributing to Legionnairesâ disease, especially in settings with high-risk patients (e.g. hospitals). Water systems studying Legionella amplification in domestic hot water systems can use simulated or real distribution system sampling to reproduce and study factors that prevent or reduce Legionella growth and persistence.

A series of experiments was conducted to compare methods used to evaluate the durability of animal feed pellets, as well as to investigate the potential for modeling the effects of formulation and processing factors on both pellet durability index (PDI) and pelleting energy consumption, measured in kilowatt hours per ton (kWh/ton). Seven different factors, including ground corn particle size, added fat level, inclusion of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), feed rate, steam conditioning temperature, conditioner retention time, and pellet die thickness (L:D ratio) were examined. Each factor was evaluated at two levels, and treatments were developed in order that all factor to factor comparisons could be made. Pellet samples were analyzed according to the standard method as described in ASAE S269.4, a modification of this method, and by using the NHP100 pellet tester set to each of its four testing intervals (30, 60, 90, and 120 seconds). The standard method was found to provide the most consistent and repeatable determinations of pellet durability, and was found to correlate well with the modified method, as well as with the NHP100 results at 30 and 60 seconds. Physical attributes of feed pellets, such as pellet hardness, bulk density, and moisture content were found to have significant, but weak correlations with pellet quality. Pellet quality was found to be significantly influenced by all factors other than ground corn particle size and feed rate. Higher fat level, lower conditioning temperature, and the thinner pellet die most significantly lowered pellet quality, with increasing effect respectively. A regression model was developed that was able to predict pellet durability within an average of 1.1 PDI. Pelleting energy consumption was found to be significantly influenced by all seven factors, with the higher fat level, thinner pellet die, and higher conditioning temperature most improving efficiency, with increasing effect respectively. A regression model was developed that was able to predict energy consumption within an average of 0.3 kWh/ton. The successful creation of regression equations demonstrates that there is potential for modeling and optimizing pellet quality and energy consumption within a pelleting operation.

Immunoproteomics approach applied on affective disorder and schizophrenia patient CSF samples yielded a number of candidate autoantigens. An overall analysis of those candidates revealed that impairment of myelination might have a role in etiology of such psychiatric disorders. Validations were based on phage ELISA that is applied on the most prominent autoantigen candidate obtained from phage display selection. In parallel, a conventional ELISA by recombinant peptide rather then purified phage, helped reproduce the results that imply a tendency of autoimmune reactivity in patient CSF samples compared to controls. Comparison of these results with the closest family members of the candidate protein mapping to the same N-terminal sequence revealed that, the sequence obtained by phage display is more antigenic than its homologues. Genomic expression profile of selected candidate and three other functionally related schizophrenia susceptibibility genes were studied on mRNA in brain and spinal cord of mice, from postnatal day one until postnatal day forty-two. We could observe patterns of expression that may suggest a possible interplay of candidate proteins in the relevant neuronal maintenance mechanism. Our approach using cDNA phage display used in the identification of autoantigens in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases of the CNS is quite feasible despite several drawbacks like high false-positive number. Finally, our results may raise interest on myelination related proteins that may have roles in schizoaffective symptoms. However, strictly more effort has to be implemented to confirm and get more insight on findings, for example developing mouse models and studying a broader range of serum and CSF samples.

This thesis argued that empathy is a two-dimensional dispositional trait, dependent upon aspects of an individual’s socialisation and dispositional temperament; and as a pro-social emotion influenced by the nature and closeness of an individual’s relationship towards a specific peer. It focussed upon peer relationships across everyday interactions and bullying behaviours were assessed by the Participant Role Scale. Five studies were conducted. Study 1 investigated the development and the reliability of the Cognitive and Affective Empathy Scale for Younger Children (CAES-C) using test-retest methodology. There were two main factor loadings of empathy; one (affective) and two (cognitive). Girls scored higher levels of empathy than boys and were more cognitively empathetic to same gender peers. Study 2 measured bullies, bully-victims and non-bullying roles (victims, outsiders and defenders) empathy levels. It found that defenders had higher cognitive empathy levels than victim-bullies and combined bullying roles. Study 3 used an adaptation of the CAES-C with adolescents (CAES-C/A). Findings corresponded to Study One, with two main factors of affective and cognitive empathy. Studies 4 and 5 investigated the effectiveness of two anti-bullying interventions, an adaptation of the Support Group Method, and Circle Time, using the CAES-C/A as an outcome measure. It found girls had higher cognitive empathy towards same gender peers, as in Study 1 and more likely to have a greater understanding of another girls social and situational perceptions. Both interventions were effective in enhancing cognitive and developing affective empathy. However, results indicated especially in younger ages and for opposite gender peers that affective empathy was predominately a dispositional trait, dependent upon the emotionality and temperament of a specific individual; and cognitive empathy was a more fluid construct which had a greater chance of being heightened. In conclusion the CAES-C and CAES-C/A allowed a useful baseline measure of empathy.

Improvisation is a construct that uses a set of minimal heuristic guidelines to create a highly flexible scaffold that fosters extemporaneous communication. Scholars from diverse domains: such as psychology, business, negotiation, and education have suggested its use as a method for preparing professionals to manage complexity and think on their feet. A review of the literature revealed that while there is substantial theoretical scholarship on using improvisation in diverse domains, little research has verified these assertions. This dissertation evaluated whether improvisation, a specific type of dramatic technique, was effective for training pre-service teachers in specific characteristics of teacher-child classroom interaction, communication and affective skills development. It measured the strength and direction of any potential changes such training might effect on pre-service teacher's self-efficacy for teaching and for implementing the communication skills common to improvisation and teaching while interacting with student in an inclusive classroom setting. A review of the literature on teacher self-efficacy and improvisation clarified and defined key terms, and illustrated relevant studies. This study utilized a mixed-method research design based on instructional design and development research. Matched pairs t-tests were used to analyze the self-efficacy and training skills survey data and pre-service teacher reflections and interview transcripts were used to triangulate the qualitative data. Results of the t-tests showed a significant difference in participants' self-efficacy for teaching measured before and after the improvisation training. A significant difference in means was also measured in participants' aptitude for improvisation strategies and for self-efficacy for their implementation pre-/post- training. Qualitative results from pre-service teacher class artifacts and interviews showed participants reported beneficial personal outcomes as well as confirmed using skills from the training while interacting with students. Many of the qualitative themes parallel individual question items on the teacher self-efficacy TSES scale as well as the improvisation self-efficacy scale CSAI. The self-reported changes in affective behavior such as increased self-confidence and ability to foster positive interaction with students are illustrative of changes in teacher agency. Self-reports of being able to better understand student perspectives demonstrate a change in participant ability to empathize with students. Participants who worked with both typically developing students as well as with students with disabilities reported utilizing improvisation strategies such as Yes, and…, mirroring emotions and body language, vocal prosody and establishing a narrative relationship to put the students at ease, establish a positive learning environment, encourage student contributions and foster teachable moments. The improvisation strategies showed specific benefit for participants working with nonverbal students or who had commutation difficulties, by providing the pre-service teachers with strategies for using body language, emotional mirroring, vocal prosody and acceptance to foster interaction and communication with the student. Results from this investigation appear to substantiate the benefit of using improvisation training as part of a pre-service teacher methods course for preparing teachers for inclusive elementary classrooms. Replication of the study is encouraged with teachers of differing populations to confirm and extend results.

Il lavoro di ricerca, proposto all’interno di questa tesi, indaga la dimensione emozionale e psico-emotiva dell’esperienza utente (bambino) che incide sul benessere all’interno del contesto sanitario. Si interroga sul ruolo e sui contributi del Design, nello specifico l’Emotional Design e l’approccio Human Centred Design (HCD), all’interno del contesto pediatrico-ospedaliero. Partendo, dunque, dalle diverse teorie sulle emozioni, dagli studi condotti dalle scienze affettive, neuroscienze sociali e cognitive e dai contributi apportati dalla ricerca di Design e della psicologia cognitiva, questa ricerca affronta il tema dell’affettività dei bambini nella valutazione e progettazione di esperienze utenti positive, come requisito da considerare all’interno del processo di progettazione dei sistemi ospedalieri. Si interroga sulle strategie e strumenti di valutazione, propri dello Human Centred Design (HCD), User Experience (UX), Affective Evaluation Methods (AEM) della Psicologia, Scienze affettive, Ergonomia cognitiva, che permettono la misurazione delle emozioni e le implicazioni di queste sulla cura. La ricerca, al fine di comprendere la risposta affettiva del piccolo paziente, nell’interazione con il sistema prodotto/servizio medicale, mira a sviluppare una strategia progettuale che, includendo gli stati emotivi dell’utente all’interno dell’approccio HCD, permetta di elaborare le modalità con cui le risposte emotive possono essere interpretate e messe a servizio del progetto. Pertanto, sulla base dell’analisi della letteratura e delle indagini sul campo, sono stati proposti approcci, strategie, strumenti e ipotesi progettuali finalizzati alla valutazione dell’impatto emotivo nei bambini. Complessivamente, la ricerca ha beneficiato del supporto dell’Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Meyer e del confronto di una rete di esperti in diverse discipline (psicologia, ergonomia e medicina), evidenziando l’importanza di coniugare maggiormente la dimensione multidisciplinare tra più sfere della conoscenza. The research work proposed within this thesis investigates the emotional and psycho-emotional dimension of the user experience (child) that affects well-being within the healthcare context. It questions the role and contributions of Design, specifically Emotional Design and the Human Centred Design (HCD) approach, within the pediatric hospital context. Starting, therefore, from the different theories on emotions, from the studies conducted by the affective sciences, social and cognitive neurosciences, and the contributions made by the research of Design and cognitive psychology, this research addresses the issue of children's affectivity in the evaluation and planning of experiences. Positive users, as a requirement to be considered within the design process of hospital systems. It questions the strategies and evaluation tools, typical of Human Centred Design (HCD), User Experience (UX), Affective Evaluation Methods (AEM) of Psychology, Affective Sciences, Cognitive Ergonomics, which allow the measurement of emotions and the implications of these on care. The research, to understand the affective response of the young patient, in the interaction with the medical product/service system, aims to develop a design strategy that, by including the user's emotional states within the HCD approach, allows elaborate how the emotional responses can be interpreted and put at the service of the project. Therefore, based on the analysis of the literature and field surveys, approaches, strategies, tools and design hypotheses aimed at assessing the emotional impact in children have been proposed. Overall, the research benefited from the support of the Meyer University Hospital and the comparison of a network of experts in different disciplines (psychology, ergonomics and medicine), highlighting the importance of combining the multidisciplinary dimension between multiple spheres of knowledge.

Schools are increasingly expected to prevent and decrease violence, substance use, and other problem behaviors linked to academics and prepare students to be contributing members of society. One approach with proven success in promoting positive outcomes related to a broad range of student behaviors and personal characteristics is social-emotional learning, also known as positive youth development or social-emotional and character development (SECD) programs. Currently, little is known about the relationship between SECD and these outcomes in low-income, urban, minority populations. The present studies (a) examine key methodological design issues in conducting a cluster-randomized trial with such populations, and (b) assess whether an intervention designed to promote SECD was effective in improving the SECD developmental status of children from this population. Data for this study come from the Chicago cluster-randomized controlled trial (CRCT) of Positive Action (PA). The trial was longitudinal at the school level with a place-focused intent-to-treat design at the student level. This CRCT collected data on children in grades 3 through 8, for a total of 6 years and 8 data collection points. Manuscript #1 focuses on the design, sample, planned analyses, and a latent class analysis (LCA) of mobility patterns. Specifically, the setting and recruitment of schools is described, as well as the process by which schools were matched into pairs and randomized into PA or control, including the list of criteria for school eligibility and variables used for matching. Additionally, this paper thoroughly describes the primary analyses to test for program effects using three-level growth curve models (time nested within students nested within schools), as well as several sensitivity analyses that will also be conducted when evaluating this program. Further, this manuscript discusses secondary tests of meditation and moderation, which will assist in the understanding of how the program works (mediation) and for whom (moderation). Finally, this paper also provides several descriptive statistics and characteristics of the students and teachers in this sample. In terms of baseline equivalency, PA and control schools did not significantly differ on matching variables before or during the trial. Minimal differences were found on baseline reports from students, teachers, and parents; half of these differences favored PA students and half favored control students. Manuscript #2 focuses on the intervention effects on the student-, teacher-, and parent-reported social-emotional outcomes assessed during the Chicago CRCT, following the analytic procedures outlined in the first paper and focusing on the effectiveness of PA on social-emotional outcomes. Results indicate that PA had a significant effect on student self-reports of prosocial interactions, honesty, self-development, self-control, respect for parents and teachers, empathy, altruism, positive actions/feelings, negative moral center, and aggressive problem solving. Additionally, it was found that PA had marginal effects on teacher-reported responsibility. Minimal differences by gender were found; no differences by mobility status were found. Together, these two papers involved a sample of students in a high-risk setting; generating improvements can be particularly difficult in urban areas. The empirical evidence of effectiveness of a SECD program in a high-risk population, as demonstrated in the present study, should serve as a call to action for policymakers and school officials who are increasingly challenged to positively impact not only academic achievement, but also behavior and character development.

Resumen

This dissertation investigated an affective curriculum intervention’s effectiveness in resolving

underachievement. The intervention was first implemented at a summer program with 20 students

and four camp counselors. Inductive analysis of qualitative data indicated that most participants

had positive perceptions of the model. Descriptive analyses indicated the intervention had small,

positive effects on students’ academic self-perceptions (MD = 0.122, SD = 0.621, d = 0.196) and

attitudes toward teachers (MD = 0.139, SD = 0.848, d = 0.164) were found. There was no change

in attitudes toward school (MD = 0.080, SD = 1.327, d = 0.060) and goal valuation (MD = 0, SD =

0.721, d = 0) and a moderate, negative effect on self-regulation (MD = -0.620, SD = 1.346, d = -

0.460). The intervention was then implemented in a middle school with one 12-year old girl who

was gifted and underachieving. An explanatory mixed methods design, combining a single-case

A-B design, an interrupted time series simulation, and inductive analysis, was used. The model

was perceived as useful, mainly in increasing self-perceptions. Results showed a significant

increase in behavioral engagement (d = 1.224, p <.001) and improved achievement (SMD = 1.28).

Academic self-perception (MD = 0.57) and attitudes toward school (MD = 1.00) improved,

attitudes toward teachers showed no change, and goal valuation (MD = -0.67) and self-regulation

(MD = -0.40) decreased. These two studies provide preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of

the intervention.

Vacuum packaging of fish results in minimal shelf-life extension due to the influence of the biochemical characteristics of fish muscle, such as the presence of trimethylamine oxide (an electron acceptor), low glycogen reserves and high ultimate pH. It is difficult to inhibit Gram negative spoilage bacteria without the addition of some form of preservative. Potassium sorbate effectively slowed microbial growth in scallops (Pecten fumata) when used in conjunction with vacuum packaging. Shelf-lives of 21-28 days at 4°c were obtained. Inhibition of spoilage for extended periods and temperature abuse of sorbate treated scallops did not appear to increase the risk of spore germination and toxin production by Clostridium botulinum Types A, B, E and F. Toxin was produced by Type A at 27°c, but only after the scallops had deteriorated beyond acceptability. No toxin was produced at 4°c or 10°c. The effect of K-sorbate on the shelf-life of blue grenadier (Macruronus novaezelandiae) fillets was less dramatic. Inconsistent results could be expected due to the variable properties of the fish flesh. pH is an important factor, as it affects the proportion of sorbic acid present in the undissociated state. Modified atmosphere storage (using 100% co2) at 4°C resulted in a shelf-life of 16 days for trevalla (Hyperoglyphe porosa) and 22 days for scallops. The effect of co2 was to slow bacterial growth and select a flora dominated by lactic acid bacteria. A combination of potassium sorbate, polyphosphate and 100% co2 was more effective in extending the shelf-life of morwong (Nemadactylus macropterus) than either treatment alone, however the fillets dropped below borderline acceptability after 13 days. Inhibition of bacterial growth or the complete elimination of bacteria showed that the maximum shelf-life of seafoods is restricted by non-microbial factors. The shelf-life of sterile mullet and trumpeter stored at 4°c was limited by nucleotide degradation and oxidation of fats, and was only marginally longer than for fish spoiling in the presence of bacteria. Antimicrobial activity of weak organic acids is considered to be pH dependent, the effect being reduced with increasing pH. However, potassium sorbate is inhibitory towards Alteromonas putrefaciens (an organism active in the spoilage of proteinaceous foods) at near neutral pH. Electron microscopy and cell lysis studies suggested that the site of action is the outer membrane of the cell.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges affecting teachers’ classroom assessment practices and to explore how these challenges influence effective teaching and learning. The study was qualitative in nature and employed an instrumental case study approach. Semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analyses were used in the investigation. The study utilized the conceptual framework based on the model suggested by Hargreaves, Earl and Schmidt (2002). The model comprised four perspectives – technological, cultural, political and postmodern, with the intention of accounting for teachers’ assessment practices. Teachers from four different schools in North West Province were interviewed and observed. The data collected through the observations and interviews allowed me to map out the different challenges encountered by teachers in their classroom assessment practices. I also analysed documents that teachers used in conducting assessment. Document analysis was used to triangulate the information collected through observations and interviews. Textual data was analysed using content analysis. The teachers’ narratives varied according to their teaching experience and background within the diverse contexts of their particular school environments. Major challenges that emanated from this study were policy interpretation, overcrowding, support, parental involvement, moderation mechanisms (internal and external), assessment planning, implementation and communication as well as lack of resources. In order to address these challenges, teachers relied on cluster meetings, their colleagues and mostly their personal experiences. The study also revealed that teachers’ understanding and practices of classroom assessment are influenced by their social and educational context.

Couple distress is not only highly prevalent but also detrimental to individual emotional, behavioral, and physical well-being. Moreover, relationship problems can impede treatment response for a wide range of psychological disorders. Understanding couple distress requires that assessment extend beyond individual factors to include the broader relational and socioecological context. This chapter describes the multifaceted etiological considerations in couple assessment and provides brief screening measures and methods for the diagnosis of couple distress. Assessment techniques capable of evaluating behavioral, cognitive, and affective components of couple distress are highlighted. The chapter emphasizes the best practices in conceptualizing and assessing couple distress for the purpose of treatment planning and evaluation. Best practice recommendations and potential areas for future research are explicated.

AbstractRecently, the “social brain” (i.e., how the brain works in social context and the mechanisms for our social behavior) has gained focus in neuroscience literature – largely due to the fact that recently developed techniques allow studying different aspects of human social cognition and its brain correlates. In this context, hyperscanning techniques (Montague et al., Neuroimage 16(4):1159–1164, 2002) open the horizon for human interaction studies, allowing for the evaluation of interbrain connectivity. These techniques represent methods for simultaneously recording signals from different brains when subjects are interacting. In this chapter, we will explore the potentials of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), which are techniques based on blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal. We will start with a brief explanation of the BOLD response basic principles and the mechanisms involved in fMRI and fNIRS measurements related to brain function. We will then discuss the foundation of the social brain, based on the first studies, with one subject per data acquisition, to allow for understanding the new possibilities that hyperscanning techniques offer. Finally, we will focus on the scientific literature reporting fMRI and fNIRShyperscanning contribution to understand the social brain.

AbstractPsychophysiology investigates the causal relationship of physiological changes resulting from psychological states. There are significant challenges with machine learning-based momentary assessments of physiology due to varying data collection methods, physiological differences, data availability and the requirement for expertly annotated data. Advances in wearable technology have significantly increased the scale, sensitivity and accuracy of devices for recording physiological signals, enabling large-scale unobtrusive physiological data gathering. This work contributes an empirical evaluation of signal variances acquired from wearables and their associated impact on the classification of affective states by (i) assessing differences occurring in features representative of affective states extracted from electrocardiograms and photoplethysmography, (ii) investigating the disparity in feature importance between signals to determine signal-specific features, and (iii) investigating the disparity in feature importance between affective states to determine affect-specific features. Results demonstrate that the degree of feature variance between ECG and PPG in a dataset is reflected in the classification performance of that dataset. Additionally, beats-per-minute, inter-beat-interval and breathing rate are identified as common best-performing features across both signals. Finally feature variance per-affective state identifies hard-to-distinguish affective states requiring one-versus-rest or additional features to enable accurate classification.

AbstractIn response to the fact that traditional asset value assessment methods are subjective and cannot distinguish the value of different assets carrying the same type of business, a comprehensive assessment method that takes into account the importance of the business carried by the assets is proposed. In this paper, four factors affecting business importance are selected as evaluation indicators, and the CRITIC objective assignment method is used to obtain the weights of each evaluation indicator, calculate the importance of the business carried by the asset, and then calculate the asset value using the multiplication method with the assigned values of the asset in terms of confidentiality (C), integrity (I) and availability (A). The results of the case validation show that the calculation results of assessing the asset value by combining business importance are consistent with the actual value of the asset, and the comparison results with the traditional method show that the proposed method is more objective and reasonable in assessing the asset value.

Nowadays, the design focuses not just on the functional attributes of products but especially on emotional ones, and it investigates users' behavior from an emotional point of view.Industrial companies also discovered the economic advantages of holistically analyzing user experience and aim, beyond usability research, to improve people-product interaction. Therefore, their goal is to understand how to evaluate the emotions arising from the interaction with a product and integrate emotions into usability studies. Consequently, it is fundamental to look at Affective Evaluation Methods to enhance usability methods and make them more effective on affective responses. However, scientific literature highlights that although the understanding of emotions has progressed, measurement tools have lagged. Moreover, people generally find it difficult to report the emotions they experience. Furthermore, regarding children, evaluating the emotional impact of a product is even more complex. Therefore, applying methods and tools found in the literature (affective evaluation methods - AEM) may not be appropriate to investigate the affective response in children, according to specific variables.This research addresses the issue of children's affectivity in evaluating positive user experiences as a requirement to be considered within the design process. In addition, this research investigates theories on emotions and studies of the affective sciences and explores the contribution of design and cognitive psychology in these areas.This paper investigates strategies and evaluation tools of the Human-Centred Design (HCD), User Experience (UX), Affective Evaluation Methods (AEM) of Psychology, Affective Sciences and Cognitive Ergonomics, that allow the measurement of emotions. This study aims to:1.understanding the emotional skills of children; 2.verifying the reliability of the emotional responses expressed through the existing self-assessment tools;3.investigating effective methods to evaluate the affective response of 6-11 years children.This research describes the results of two qualitative methods for investigating emotions: (1) the survey aimed to collect data on emotions experienced by children; (2) the workshop focused on emotions conducted with children of age 6-11. The workshop included activities to analyze children’s emotional skills and their ability to recognize emotions in themselves, others, and interaction with products. Furthermore, field surveys with children and experts (direct observation, interviews, focus groups, brainstorming sessions) allowed us to evaluate the reliability of the emotional responses collected by the main tools described in the literature, e.g. tools for rational-emotional education (REBT) and Affective Evaluation Methods (AEM).The collected data revealed critical issues of current evaluation tools and identified the requirements for a new tool for children’s emotional evaluation. Specifically, it emerged that the cognitive-behavioral approaches, typical of psychology, can be powerful tools for designers to interpret and analyze the emotional responses that occurred during the interaction with a system. Together with the HCD and UX tools, these approaches can help designers improve the overall quality of the project.Furthermore, results show a lack of a theoretical framework to move from a conceptual to an empirical level to develop effective tools to measure emotions. Consequently, it is essential to introduce tools for measuring the objective and subjective aspects of the experience, as it is challenging to involve such young users in the research phases.The results of this study allowed the development and prototyping of a series of design concepts to evaluate the emotional impact and collect physiological measurements. This paper only shows the main objectives and features of the tool "Cubotto emotion kit". It is an interactive tool that provides information and allows qualitative data collection so far beyond even the measurement of emotions themselves. It could help designers understand children's preferences, such as colors and shapes that can arouse positive emotions and useful information to redesign products, services, and systems.

Images can convey rich semantics and induce strong emotions in viewers. Recently, with the explosive growth of visual data, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to affective image content analysis (AICA). In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art methods comprehensively with respect to two main challenges -- affective gap and perception subjectivity. We begin with an introduction to the key emotion representation models that have been widely employed in AICA. Available existing datasets for performing evaluation are briefly described. We then summarize and compare the representative approaches on emotion feature extraction, personalized emotion prediction, and emotion distribution learning. Finally, we discuss some future research directions.

Some aspects concerning different forms of "games" used to evaluate, correct and rehabilitate visual functions in optometric field are presented in this paper. In the first part of the paper some theoretical and experimental considerations about the eye movements, amblyopic or cross eyes manifested in preschool children and the importance of preserving the health of visual function during the life are presented. For this purpose, the paper presents some types of tests and devices designed to be used in evaluation, correction and rehabilitation of visual function of pre-school children. In the first part of the paper the visual anomalies discovered in pre-school children are presented, which should be carefully, constantly and competently analyzed and corrected in a personalized manner. Playful methods, based upon games perception or on the relaxed approach during the tests proved to be very helpful in that which means evaluation and correction methods. In the second part of the paper, we present a series of games and tests combinations, which stimulate besides the understanding ability also some functions of the visual system of the pre-school child, such as: in depth perception, three-dimensional sight, eye movements, color vision, tracing contours. In the third part the authors present the evaluation and correction procedures for different cases, all based upon game method, effective and affective participation of the child and the visual function reactions and responses are observed together with the understanding development and participation to rehabilitation forms. These methods for stimulation and developing visual function can help specialists from optometric field to understand, to analyze different forms of visual behavior and to develop personalized evaluation procedures, correction and adaptation of visual impairments for children. Also the results, conclusions and future applications of these researches are presented.

In the field of integral design (systemic design considers people, the activities, objects mediators of these activities and the environment of use of the objects) has been increasing interest to integrate the users during the development process, primarily for the investigation and evaluation stages. In certain university in the Mexican context efforts are made to train Designers with expertise in ergonomics, human factors and methodology associated with the processes of design development. Part of the effort is the constant incorporation of knowledge about the process of design, features and methodologies as well as the inclusion of aspects that allow users consider (ergonomics and human factors) at different stages of the design process. The objective of this proposal is to contextualize the importance of creating a toolkit which classified different methods and techniques and instruments from various disciplines useful for the stages of inquiry and evaluation of the integrated design process, identifying the type of data that sheds (qualitative or quantitative) and its application process and the utility reports to process. In order to improve the design process of inquiry has resorted to using diverse techniques that have allowed an approach to the qualitative and quantitative necessary to include the social, emotional and cognitive users during the development of the design process. Moreover, the assessment is a process of obtaining information and its use through the application of methods and techniques allows us to identify the level of development of a project with respect to the objectives, with the intention of making judgments useful for decisions, i.e. allows assessment feedback in the design process. There are considered two types of evaluation: formative and summative. Formative assessment is an assessment that is done during design to ensure that the product meets the needs of users while evaluation (also called summative or comprehensive) is an assessment that is done when the design is finalized, possessing each type evaluation. An evaluation design should observe all aspects that impact the user interaction with objects and the environment of use of the same, i.e. systemic approach is needed to respond to the questions: Why evaluate? , What evaluate? , Where assess? , When to evaluate?, all with the aim of evaluating the User experience (which involves affective, cognitive , physical and social) so that the methods, techniques and tools for inquiry or evaluation must be properly selected and applied during the design process.

This paper discusses techniques of remediation used in a practical study case of an ADHD child. The major focus of this process is to enhance the development of underdeveloped functions and its main objective is to create, together with the patient, effective work methods, which would be meaningful to the child and would a part of his or her experiences in life. The paper considers the case of a 7.year.old boy suspected of having ADHD and provides his pre.and post.neuropsychological evaluation data. The 6.month intervention process brought some significant results as the evaluation showed the development of several superior mental functions and the initial hypothesis of ADHD was refuted. Thus, the remediation process which involved an adult that respected the level of the child’s development and included meaningful activities within an affective impact enhanced the child’s development.

Resumen
The unexpected transition from in-person to online teaching in the spring of 2020 took university language instructors off guard. The objective of my research is to show that adapting to the new-normal (i.e. unplanned shift to online teaching) had a ripple effect on teaching methods, learning goals, student motivation. The setting of the research is a Business English course at a university in Budapest (Hungary). The autoetnographic research I carried out provides personal reflections both on the objective elements of the course: needs, learning objectives, teaching material and methods and evaluation, and on the affective elements: student motivation and emotions. The findings show that adverse circumstances can force teachers and students not only to set more realistic learning goals, focusing on the most relevant and important materials, but by keeping standards high, to find a new form of motivation.

With the increasing problem of air pollution and the increase of rhinitis patients, nasal cleaning has become a problem, and the home electric nasal washer has a good market prospect as the main device for nasal rinsing. The study applied the methods related to Kansei Engineering to quantify the perceptual vocabulary, including collecting and screening the perceptual element vocabulary, selecting representative product samples, and establishing the perceptual imagery space using the semantic difference scale. Then the data evaluation results were input into the software SPSS for factor analysis and principal component analysis, and the key words of design elements that meet users' needs were determined to be "mild", "safe", "clean " "comfortable", representing the user's perceptual preference for the electric nose washer. Combined with the product samples, we analyzed the correlation between users' perceptual imagery and product elements, summarized the design points, and finally designed the product based on the design points. The study provides a new way of thinking and direction for the design of electric nasal wash for home use that is integrated with the user's affective needs.

The measurement and understanding of user emotions elicited by product appearance are critical elements of the product development process and have been interesting design challenges for many years. This paper proposes an original emotion measurement method, called Auditory Parameter Method. It is a non-verbal technique, which uses sounds and association tests for evaluating a set of products (given by their pictures). It provides an assessment of these products according to a series of emotional dimensions. We present a methodological framework to build the links between user’s emotional responses and geometrical features of product, by using a glasses frame 3D model as application case. Analysis of Variance techniques are employed to examine how various shape factors influence users’ emotional responses to 3D model. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our protocol, we compare the proposed method with the conventional Semantic Differential using Principal Component Analysis and Generalized Procrustes Analysis. The new protocol demonstrates interesting qualities to collect the intuitive emotions of user.

Subjective well-being (SWB) is an overall evaluation of the quality of a person’slife from his or her own perspective. One common method of assessing thisconstruct requires respondents to think about their life as a whole and to providea “global” evaluation that summarizes across life domains or affective experiencesover extended periods of time. The validity of these global measures has beenchallenged, however; and experiential measures, which ask respondents to reporton their momentary evaluative experiences many times over a constrained timeperiod, have been suggested as a more valid alternative. This paper addresses theempirical evidence for one important challenge to global measures: the possibilitythat temporarily salient information overwhelmingly influences global judgments,reducing their reliability and validity. This paper critiques prior evidence for thischallenge and presents new concerns about the assumed validity of the proposedalternative: experiential measures.

Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) and other in-situ and remote sensing dielectric methods for determining the soil water content had become standard in both research and practice in the last two decades. Limitations of existing dielectric methods in some soils, and introduction of new agricultural measurement devices or approaches based on soil dielectric properties mandate improved understanding of the relationship between the measured effective permittivity (dielectric constant) and the soil water content. Mounting evidence indicates that consideration must be given not only to the volume fractions of soil constituents, as most mixing models assume, but also to soil attributes and ambient temperature in order to reduce errors in interpreting measured effective permittivities. The major objective of the present research project was to investigate the effects of the soil geometrical attributes and interfacial processes (bound water) on the effective permittivity of the soil, and to develop a theoretical frame for improved, soil-specific effective permittivity- water content calibration curves, which are based on easily attainable soil properties. After initializing the experimental investigation of the effective permittivity - water content relationship, we realized that the first step for water content determination by the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) method, namely, the TDR measurement of the soil effective permittivity still requires standardization and improvement, and we also made more efforts than originally planned towards this objective. The findings of the BARD project, related to these two consequential steps involved in TDR measurement of the soil water content, are expected to improve the accuracy of soil water content determination by existing in-situ and remote sensing dielectric methods and to help evaluate new water content sensors based on soil electrical properties. A more precise water content determination is expected to result in reduced irrigation levels, a matter which is beneficial first to American and Israeli farmers, and also to hydrologists and environmentalists dealing with production and assessment of contamination hazards of this progressively more precious natural resource. The improved understanding of the way the soil geometrical attributes affect its effective permittivity is expected to contribute to our understanding and predicting capability of other, related soil transport properties such as electrical and thermal conductivity, and diffusion coefficients of solutes and gas molecules. In addition, to the originally planned research activities we also investigated other related problems and made many contributions of short and longer terms benefits. These efforts include: Developing a method and a special TDR probe for using TDR systems to determine also the soil's matric potential; Developing a methodology for utilizing the thermodielectric effect, namely, the variation of the soil's effective permittivity with temperature, to evaluate its specific surface area; Developing a simple method for characterizing particle shape by measuring the repose angle of a granular material avalanching in water; Measurements and characterization of the pore scale, saturation degree - dependent anisotropy factor for electrical and hydraulic conductivities; Studying the dielectric properties of cereal grains towards improved determination of their water content. A reliable evaluation of the soil textural attributes (e.g. the specific surface area mentioned above) and its water content is essential for intensive irrigation and fertilization processes and within extensive precision agriculture management. The findings of the present research project are expected to improve the determination of cereal grain water content by on-line dielectric methods. A precise evaluation of grain water content is essential for pricing and evaluation of drying-before-storage requirements, issues involving energy savings and commercial aspects of major economic importance to the American agriculture. The results and methodologies developed within the above mentioned side studies are expected to be beneficial to also other industrial and environmental practices requiring the water content determination and characterization of granular materials.

The project’s general objectives were to determine specific polymorphisms at the DNA level responsible for observed quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and to estimate their effects, frequencies, and selection potential in the Holstein dairy cattle breed. The specific objectives were to (1) localize the causative polymorphisms to small chromosomal segments based on analysis of 52 U.S. Holstein bulls each with at least 100 sons with high-reliability genetic evaluations using the a posteriori granddaughter design; (2) sequence the complete genomes of at least 40 of those bulls to 20 coverage; (3) determine causative polymorphisms based on concordance between the bulls’ genotypes for specific polymorphisms and their status for a QTL; (4) validate putative quantitative trait variants by genotyping a sample of Israeli Holstein cows; and (5) perform gene expression analysis using statistical methodologies, including determination of signatures of selection, based on somatic cells of cows that are homozygous for contrasting quantitative trait variants; and (6) analyze genes with putative quantitative trait variants using data mining techniques. Current methods for genomic evaluation are based on population-wide linkage disequilibrium between markers and actual alleles that affect traits of interest. Those methods have approximately doubled the rate of genetic gain for most traits in the U.S. Holstein population. With determination of causative polymorphisms, increasing the accuracy of genomic evaluations should be possible by including those genotypes as fixed effects in the analysis models. Determination of causative polymorphisms should also yield useful information on gene function and genetic architecture of complex traits. Concordance between QTL genotype as determined by the a posteriori granddaughter design and marker genotype was determined for 30 trait-by-chromosomal segment effects that are segregating in the U.S. Holstein population; a probability of <10²⁰ was used to accept the null hypothesis that no segregating gene within the chromosomal segment was affecting the trait. Genotypes for 83 grandsires and 17,217 sons were determined by either complete sequence or imputation for 3,148,506 polymorphisms across the entire genome. Variant sites were identified from previous studies (such as the 1000 Bull Genomes Project) and from DNA sequencing of bulls unique to this project, which is one of the largest marker variant surveys conducted for the Holstein breed of cattle. Effects for stature on chromosome 11, daughter pregnancy rate on chromosome 18, and protein percentage on chromosome 20 met 3 criteria: (1) complete or nearly complete concordance, (2) nominal significance of the polymorphism effect after correction for all other polymorphisms, and (3) marker coefficient of determination >40% of total multiple-regression coefficient of determination for the 30 polymorphisms with highest concordance. The missense polymorphism Phe279Tyr in GHR at 31,909,478 base pairs on chromosome 20 was confirmed as the causative mutation for fat and protein concentration. For effect on fat percentage, 12 additional missensepolymorphisms on chromosome 14 were found that had nearly complete concordance with the suggested causative polymorphism (missense mutation Ala232Glu in DGAT1). The markers used in routine U.S. genomic evaluations were increased from 60,000 to 80,000 by adding markers for known QTLs and markers detected in BARD and other research projects. Objectives 1 and 2 were completely accomplished, and objective 3 was partially accomplished. Because no new clear-cut causative polymorphisms were discovered, objectives 4 through 6 were not completed.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the therapeutic effects of Jianpi Liqi decoction (JPLQD) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and explore its underlying mechanisms. Methods: The characteristics and outcomes of HCC patients with intermediate stage B who underwent sequential conventional transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (cTACE) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) only or in conjunction with JPLQD were analysed retrospectively. The plasma proteins were screened using label-free quantitative proteomics analysis. The effective mechanisms of JPLQD were predicted through network pharmacology approach and partially verified by ELISA. Results: Clinical research demonstrated that the Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome scores, neutropenia and bilirubin, median progression-free survival (PFS), and median overall survival (OS) in HCC patients treated with JPLQD were superior to those in patients not treated with JPLQD (all P<0.05). The analysis of network pharmacology, combined with proteomics, suggested that 52 compounds targeted 80 potential targets, which were involved in the regulation of multiple signaling pathways, especially affecting the apoptosis-related pathways including TNF, p53, PI3K-AKT, and MAPK. Plasma IGFBP3 and CA2 were significantly up-regulated in HCC patients with sequential cTACE and RFA therapy treated with JPLQD than those in patients not treated with JPLQD (P<0.001). The AUC of the IGFBP3 and CA2 panel, estimated using ROC analysis for JPLQD efficacy evaluation, was 0.867. Conclusion: These data suggested that JPLQD improves the quality of life, prolongs the overall survival, protects liver function in HCC patients, and exhibits an anticancer activity against HCC. IGFBP3 and CA2 panels may be potential therapeutic targets and indicators in the efficacy evaluation for JPLQD treatment, and the effective mechanisms involved in the regulation of multiple signaling pathways, possibly affected the regulation of apoptosis.

A patented active porcelain enamel coating improves both the bond between the concrete and steel reinforcement as well as its corrosion resistance. A Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to develop a commercial method for production of porcelain-coated fibers was developed in 2015. Market potential of this technology with its steel/concrete bond improvements and corrosion protection suggests that it can compete with other fiber reinforcing systems, with improvements in performance, durability, and cost, especially as compared to smooth fibers incorporated into concrete slabs and beams. Preliminary testing in a Phase 1 SBIR investigation indicated that active ceramic coatings on small diameter wire significantly improved the bond between the wires and the concrete to the point that the wires achieved yield before pullout without affecting the strength of the wire. As part of an SBIR Phase 2 effort, the University of Louisville under contract for Ceramics, Composites and Coatings Inc., proposed an investigation to evaluate active enamel-coated steel fibers in typical concrete applications and in masonry grouts in both tension and compression. Evaluation of the effect of the incorporation of coated fibers into Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) was examined using flexural and compressive strength testing as well as through nanoindentation.

The initial wetting of a reservoir sets a limit for the EOR potential during water-based recovery operations and “Smart Water” injection. For this reason, an improved understanding of the factors influencing the wetting can help to control and better forecast oil production during water-based floods. To preserve and reproduce the original reservoir wettability is a challenging task and wrong cleaning and core restoration procedures can lead to incorrect wettability estimations and thus induce serious errors when evaluating the initial wettability of a reservoir system or its EOR potential by water-based methods. Thereby, there is a need to improve the chemical knowledge on interactions among the rock, brine and fluids present in reservoir systems. This will help to understanding the influence of the parameters affecting wettability during cleaning and core restoration processes. Understanding which are the main parameters influencing oil recovery processes is of great relevance. The objective of this document is to provide suggestions for added-value experiments, complementing and challenging the standard RCA and SCAL procedures, prior to performing experimental research in which wettability and wettability alteration processes are important. Lessons learned will be highlighted and new ideas to optimize core restoration protocols to preserve and closely reproduce wettability are put forward. These recommended practices target core restoration procedures after the core material has been received in the laboratory.
