Resumen
AbstractThe renewal of the Canada-US North American Aerospace Defence (NORAD) agreement in March 1986 will not end the debate on the relationship between NORAD and trends in American strategy, including the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). This article reviews and explains the various strains of that debate. It points out why some in Canada argue that participation in NORAD will inevitably lead to Canadian involvement in the ballistic missile defence objective of the SDI. It also notes, however, why the military and other observers are concerned that strategic and technological trends in the US may make it difficult for Canada to remain active in North American aerospace defence, and indeed, even to provide for its own air sovereignty.

Resumen
AbstractThe Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) can be described as an approach for optimisation of in-service (logistics) activities and minimisation of the life cycle costs of a system. ILS is an integral part of systems engineering in aerospace and defence programmes.More recently, the Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) has released a broad set of specifications for ILS, the so-called ASD ILS Suite. Most of these specifications are published in cooperation with the Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA) and one specification with AIA and the Airlines for America (A4A). Thus, the ASD ILS Suite is recognised and used in the largest aerospace and defence markets. The aim of this paper is to present the results of a critical review on the readiness of the ASD ILS Suite for its applicability in aerospace and defence programmes.

This article analyses disruptive innovation in Indian aerospace and defence industry using a theoretical model developed on the basis of Christensen’s framework for analysing disruptive innovation and by addressing the requirements of aerospace and defence industry. This framework is then used to collect data from key stakeholders and analyse the movements of Indian aerospace and defence industry. Analysis of a large sample of data reveals that there are forces of disruptive innovation that have been set in motion in the Indian aerospace and defence industry by recent events driven by the signals of changes in the industry and the steps taken by Government of India; however, they do not appear to be sufficient to be able to drive innovation and business activity that may amount to a scale of disruptive innovation due to lack of user participation and inadequate access to the global network of technology and management expertise. Resumen
The second-largest military force in the world, the Indian Defense sector, is on the verge of transformation. India is third in the world for military spending, with its defence spending making up 2.15% of the GDP of the nation. By 2025, GOI hopes to have a revenue of USD 25 billion, including an export of USD 5 billion in goods and services related to aerospace and defence. Two Defense Industrial Corridors have been developed by the government in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and Ordinance Factories (OFs) were gradually established to take on the role of designer and integrator of defence weapons and equipment under the purview of Department of Defence Production. Among 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSU) the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is the largest DPSU and it tops the production with Rs.19911.5 crores in 2020 – 2021 followed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) of Rs.13947 crores to Indian Defense. In todays concern, we have competent DPSUs that are able to establish standards for the private sector in the manufacturing of defence goods because significant funds have already been invested in building competence in certain domains. Facilities, knowledge, and personnel developed by DPSU with public financing must be used to the best of the nations capacity as we move towards self-reliance and export capability in the acquisition of defence.

The economics of contracting have received rather limited attention insofar as the implications for efficiency from the selection of types of contracts employed in the aerospace and defence sector are involved. The paper analyzes the challenges confronting the cost-plus/cost-reimbursement type of contracts of European Commission and intergovernmental organizations like the European Space Agency (ESA), who are involved in security and defence projects with significant multiplier effects within defence and security networks. The analysis indicates how institutional limitations result in contractual choice inefficiencies and anti-competitive practices that may affect the whole of the aerospace industrial base, including subcontractors. The paper concludes with policy implications and further research recommendation.

Resumen
This study aims to explore the relationship between customer orientation, innovative and organizational performance as well as to ascertain crowdsourcing’s mediating role in augmenting innovative performance in the Turkish Defense and Aerospace Industry. A survey was distributed to 54 C-level executives who are members of Turkish Defense and Aerospace Manufacturers Association (SaSAD). First, a regression analysis was used to predict the impact of customer orientation on innovative and organizational performance. Then, a hierarchical regression analysis was performed to assess if crowdsourcing has a positive impact on enhancing innovative performance. While customer orientation has a somewhat moderate impact on organizational performance, it enhances organizations’ innovative performance to a great extent. Furthermore, while innovative performance does not have an immediate positive impact on organizational performance in the short-term, crowdsourcing significantly helps organizations to augment their innovative performance. Whereas extant studies of strategic orientation have focused mainly on the orientation–performance relationship, very few studies provided quantitative evidence regarding the exclusive impact of customer orientation on performance. More importantly, this study aims to explore the mediating role of crowdsourcing between customer orientation and innovative performance in the Turkish defence and aerospace industry, which has a completely peculiar structure.

Resumen
Production, sustainment and repair technologies for light alloy components in the defence applications account for a significant proportion of Defence Materials Technology Centre (DMTC) activities. Key challenges in this regard include the affordable manufacture and repair & sustainment of Titanium components for new and legacy platforms. The DMTC research program portfolio incorporates collaborative technology development activities between industry and the research sector within a framework of a partnership model that includes input from the Defence customer on likely procurement opportunities for industry, and longer term strategic requirements of Defence. The technological focus is particularly on the benchmarking of strategies, technologies and manufacturing techniques associated with the manufacture of aerospace components via high speed machining. Developing affordable, cost-effective and best of breed machining processes and practices among a broad range of Australian manufacturing organisations is a key goal of the DMTC. This paper describes an initiative of the DMTC focused on developing and optimising engineering capability in metals manufacturing for aerospace applications. Data generated from a range of participating sources conducting machining trials of identical titanium and stainless steel components is compared and contrasted in the context of best practice development.

Abstract This paper considers defence and aerospace research in the UK from the perspective of a research worker. The distinction between research, technology demonstration and development, the particular characteristics of research and the qualities required in a research worker are discussed. The important influence of the research environment, both within an organisation and nationally, is highlighted. The contribution of the past environment to the research underlying the present strength of UK technology, and subsequent adverse changes in the environment, are noted. The decline of UK research funding and of the UK research base is contrasted with the situation of our main industrial competitors. Finally, the author lists the actions which he believes are needed to rebuild research to a level which will underwrite the long-term future of UK defence and aerospace.

Resumen
While the threat and use of force remain elements or even possibilities in world affairs, the political importance of the defence industries will be substantial. Defence industries must be viewed as significant because of the contribution that they make to allowing states to deter attack and to use force. But they also have an economic and technological significance. In the UK, France and the US, defence equipment represents about 10 per cent of total manufacturing output. Equipment orders from home and abroad provide employment for around 500,000 people in the UK, at least 300,000 in France, and over two million in the US. The US Department of Defence, the Pentagon, employs 134,000 people just to procure equipment worth about $130 billion involving 15 million contracts a year. Defence equipment is big business and is particularly important today in the aerospace, electronics and shipbuilding sectors. Between a quarter and a third of professional technologists and scientists in Britain, France and the US work in the defence sector.

Resumen
Near-Earth asteroids are a great threat to the Earth, especially potential rendezvous and collision asteroids. To protect the Earth from an asteroid collision, it is necessary to investigate the asteroid defence problem. An asteroid terminal defence method based on multisatellite interception was designed in this study. For an asteroid intruding in the sphere of the gravitational influence of the Earth, multiple interceptor satellites are used to apply a kinetic energy impulse to deflect the orbit of the asteroid. First, the effects of planned interception time and planned interception position on the required impulse velocity increment applied to the asteroid are assessed for interception opportunity selection. Second, multiple interceptor satellites are selected to perform the defence task from the on-orbit available interceptor satellite formation. An improved contract net protocol algorithm considering the Lambert orbital manoeuvre is designed to fulfil the task allocation and satellite orbit planning. Finally, simulation experiments demonstrate the rationale and effectiveness of the proposed method, which provides support for asteroid terminal defence technology.

Resumen
Reactive oxygen species are formed as a natural product of metabolic processes occurring in the organism or under the influence of external factors. Under homeostasis, they play an important role as a cellular signaling device. During oxidative stress, when they are produced in excess, they can cause damages to proteins, lipids, carbohydrates or nucleic acids. Exposure of cells and extracellular structures to free radicals activate natural mechanisms to eliminate free radicals and their derivatives. The aim of the article was to present what antioxidants are, and how they protect cells against the free radicals. The protective system against the free radicals consists of antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidases, and reductase. Low-molecular antioxidants such as vitamin C, E, carotenoids, coenzyme Q10, flavonoids, glutathione and melatonin also play an important role.

Resumen
The past has been interesting, but what of the future? As Fig. 1 shows, extrapolation is an attractive tool, with pitfalls for the incautious - most often exemplified in aerospace by the prediction that by 2015 the entire US defence budget would fund one aeroplane, or more recently by the belief that avionics will expand into infallibility and reduce costs to invisibility. The first extrapolation is premature, and the latter two as near as makes no difference wrong. In the case of the single affordable US defence aircraft the extrapolation probably correctly estimated the 2015 US defence budget, but erred in expressing the US Department of Defence requirement in terms of aircraft rather than damage-effects on target. The subsequent step change in avionics miniaturisation undermined the extrapolation and now looks likely to enable the DoD’s damage-effect requirements to be attained using products that lie on a different cost-effectiveness trend line.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the aerodynamic analysis and external ballistics modeling used in the development of a rocket-target for short range air defence missile systems. Design/methodology/approach A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the airflow around the rocket-target was carried out to estimate the drag, which was needed to develop a mathematical model for external ballistics of the rocket-target. Field-experimental testing was conducted to compare the model results to the data obtained experimentally using various additional measurement techniques such as global positioning system (GPS) coordinates marking of the crash and launch sites, air defence surveillance radar tracking and installing equipment for telemetric data capturing and transmission. Findings Various ballistic parameters such as the velocity and trajectory of the rocket-target were obtained taking into account the CFD analysis results and internal ballistics data. The field-experimental testing showed a good agreement between the model results and the results obtained by the experimental techniques. Practical implications The presented computational models and the experimental techniques could be used in future developments of similar aircraft. Originality/value This paper presents a research approach for developing a rocket-target. The results of the research were used as a basis for developing a rocket-target for short range air defence rocket systems. The developed rocket-target was successfully implemented in practice.
