Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship of regulatory foci (promotion focus and prevention focus) to expatriate adjustments (general, interaction, and work adjustments) and explore whether mentoring functions (psychosocial support, role modeling, and career development) moderate the aforementioned relationship. Design/methodology/approach Using 141 questionnaired primary data (response rate 32.25 percent) gathered from at least six months experienced expatiates of multinational companies in six industries, this study adopts regression method to examine the moderating effect. Findings This study found that promotion focus was positively related to the interaction and work adjustment, respectively; prevention focus was positively related to the general, interaction, and work adjustment, respectively. Psychosocial support function moderates the relationship between promotion focus and general adjustment. Career development function moderates the relationships between promotion/prevention foci and work adjustment. Originality/value According to the interactionism perspective, behavior is a result of the interaction between personality and situational influences, has a long history in social and personality psychology. This study extends this perspective to the interactive effects of mentorship (situational factor) and expatriates’ regulatory foci (personality factor) on expatriate adjustment.

Resumen
Interactional adjustment refers to people’s tendency to adjust, or adapt, their communication behavior in social interactions. In recent years, three distinctive approaches to this topic that have featured prominently in the Journal of Language and Social Psychology are communication accommodation theory (CAT), language style matching (LSM), and discursive psychology using conversation analysis (DPCA). In this article, we provide a review of these three approaches, highlighting what defines and distinguishes them, as well as what insights into interactional adjustment each offers. We draw out the connections and points of tensions between these approaches; in so doing, we identify future directions for research on interactional adjustment as a fundamental aspect of human communication, and in the study of language and social psychology.

Resumen
The rehabilitation literature speaks eloquently of the stages of adjustment to disability for individuals with physical disability, but discussions in the literature about adjustment to psychiatric disability are virtually non-existent. The parallels in the fields of physical and psychiatric disability, and the newly accepted emphasis on rehabilitation of people with psychiatric disabilities, suggest that the psychology of adjustment to disability needs to be broadened to include an application to the field of psychiatric rehabilitation.

Resumen
Objective: To examine the impact of sleep deprivation and coping abilities on the psychological adjustment of caregivers of elderly. Study Design: Cross sectional analytical study. Place and Duration: Department of Psychology, University of Gujrat, Gujrat Pakistan, from Jan to Jul 2018. Methodology: The caregivers of the elderly were recruited in the study with the caregiving experience of 6 months to 2 years. The respondents with any physical or psychological problems were excluded from the study. The sleep deprivation, coping and psychological adjustment were measured using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index, coping styles scale, scale of adjustment for adults respectively. Results: The data of 200 caregivers of the elderly was analyzed using structure equation modeling. The model fit was established with the p-value of <0.001. It was found that caregivers' sleep deprivation and coping abilities affected their psychological adjustments. The overall model confirmed that sleep deprivation and coping ability affected the psychological adjustment. The individual relationship between sleep deprivation predicted psychological adjustment with the value of regression estimate as 5.808 (p-value <0.001). Furthermore, the role of coping abilities on psychological adjustment had a regression value of 0.151 (p-value 0.7013). Conclusion: The sleep deprivation affected the psychological adjustment of caregivers of the elderly, whereas the coping abilities did not affect the psychological adjustment.

Resumen
In the early years of university learning, university students required academic adjustment in regards to the differences between the learning demands and strategies between senior high school and university. Academic adjustment is a required process to fulfill academic needs appropriately. Schneider (1964), Aspinwal & Taylor (1992) found that students who are optimist were more likely to undergo the transition from senior high school to university with a lower level of stress. Seligman (2006) stated optimism as a way for individuals to explain and link an event that is perceived to be wonderful as personal, permanent, and pervasive. 129 students from the Faculty of Psychology participated in this research. The measures used based on Seligman’s theory weas Schneider academic adjustment. The validity of the measure was between 0.3-0.65 and the validity of the academic adjustment measure was between 0.3-0.62. The reliability of the optimism measure was between 0.17-0.64 and the reliability of the academic adjustment measure was 0.874. Based on the analysis of the data and the results of the Spearman Rank Correlation test, there was a quite significant finding on the relationship between optimism and academic adjustment. The aspect of permanence was found to have a stronger relationship with academic adjustment in comparison to the other two aspects of optimism. Future research suggested further research in understanding the role of optimism towards the academic adjustment of the university students of the Faculty of Psychology. The staffs of the faculty of psychology could utilised the results of this research to assemble an optimism and academic adjustment training for the recently enrolled university students.

Resumen
Objective - Students who study in higher education institutions should have a good socialization process since it later influences their happiness and sadness during their first year of university life. They may face some difficulties and problems that may inhibit their academic success if they cannot adjust well. One of the successful social adjustment criteria is self-concept, in which is derived from interactions with others, for example, the environment. For that reason, it is important to investigate the self-concept and social adjustment of Psychology students, at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, during the first semester. This paper therefore aims to a) determine the degree of student social adjustment, b) determine the quality of self-concept, and c) identify the relationship between self-concept and social adjustment among first year students of Psychology, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. Methodology/Technique – The subjects of this study include 134 first year students at the Faculty of Psychology, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, East Java. The data was collected in accordance with the scale of self-concept and social adjustment. Finding & Novelty - The results show that 1) the degree of first students’ self-concept is in average scale, 69.4%, 2) the social adjustment of first year students belongs to a moderate category, 71,6%, and 3) self-concept has positive correlation to social adjustment (r = 0,703, p = 0,000). These findings confirm that the higher the self-concept the students poses, the better the social adjustment they perform. This study suggests the need for intervention to escalate self-concept and social adjustment of students by collaborating with some stakeholders, particularly students’ parents, universities, government, societies, and religious figures. Type of Paper: Empirical.

Resumen
Over the years, the concept of psychological adaptability has stirred the field of psychology. Researchers from personality psychology, clinical psychology, and other interrelated areas of psychology have taken a special interest in understanding the adaptive functioning within the individual that may help in healthy adjustment. One of such adaptive mechanisms was first described by Sigmund Freud under the label of defense, which had been through a lot of revisions over the years. Another concept, though stemming from a different conceptual framework, could be equally important to understand the adjustment process, which was labeled as coping. The present article aims to shed light on the various similarities and differences between both concepts despite their conceptual distancing.

We examined self-reported relations between Machiavellianism (Christie & Geis, 1970) and measures related to adjustment, well-being, and ethical orientation. We predicted that Machiavellianism would be inversely associated with adjustment, and positively associated with a nihilistic, relativistic, and nonidealistic ethical orientation. With respect to adjustment and well-being our results indicate that Machiavellianism is inversely associated with scores on measures of self-esteem, subjective well-being, and hope but positively associated with powerlessness and nihilism. The results bearing on ethical orientation are consistent with outlined predictions.

Resumen
Abstract. The majority of people at risk from earthquakes do little or nothing to reduce their vulnerability. Over the past 40 years social scientists have tried to predict and explain levels of seismic hazard adjustment using models from behavioural sciences such as psychology. The present paper is the first to synthesise the major findings from the international literature on psychological correlates and causes of seismic adjustment at the level of the individual and the household. It starts by reviewing research on seismic risk perception. Next, it looks at norms and normative beliefs, focusing particularly on issues of earthquake protection responsibility and trust between risk stakeholders. It then considers research on attitudes towards seismic adjustment attributes, specifically beliefs about efficacy, control and fate. It concludes that an updated model of seismic adjustment must give the issues of norms, trust, power and identity a more prominent role. These have been only sparsely represented in the social psychological literature to date.

Resumen
The goal of this training workshop is to give an introduction in recent developments of wisdom psychology and their bearing for cognitive psychotherapy of adjustment disorders.Negative life events like divorce, dead of a beloved one, job loss etc. require enhanced coping. If this is not sufficient it can result in adjustment or other mental disorders. One factor which often contributes to pathological developments in the context of negative life events is embitterment because of the feeling of having been treated unfair, been let down or been humiliated. If embitterment is present then there is a tendency not to recover spontaneously but rather to take a chronic course. There is a new approach in the treatment for such adjustment disorders which is based on recent developments in wisdom psychology. Wisdom has been defined as the capacity to cope with unsolvable and serious problems and questions in life. It has been shown:a.that persons who are not successful in coping with negaive life events lack wisdom capacities,b.that wisdom capacities can be trained, andc.that cognitive treatment which uses wisdom strategies is helpful in the treatment of adjustment disorders and especially those with prolonged embitterment reactions. This training workshop will:•inform about the clincial features of adjustment disorders and especially posttraumatic embitterment disorders;•give an introduction in recent developments of wisdom psychology;•teach the esentials of wisdom psychotherapy.

Resumen
A study was conducted to determine if secondary-age students could use self-determination contracts to regulate the correspondence between their plans, work, self-evaluations, and adjustments on academic tasks. The authors examined the impact of these contracts on the plan, work, evaluation, and adjustment behaviors of 8 secondary-age students with severe emotional/behavioral problems. The students completed daily self-determination contracts to schedule their work on academic tasks, plan for work outcomes, evaluate progress, and adjust for the next day's activity. One-way repeated-measures (ANOVAs) yielded 15 significant effects for the correspondence between plan and work, between work and evaluation, between evaluation and adjustment, and between adjustment and the next day plan. Pre- and postassessment found significant academic improvement.
