In economic analyses of addictive behavior, the consumption of a certain good is termed to be an addiction if an increase in past consumption of the good leads to an increase in current consumption. From policy, legal, and public health perspectives, addictive goods are of interest because the consumption of many of these goods harms the consumer and others. The U.S. government and those of many other countries have chosen to regulate such addictive substances as cigarettes, alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana by means of policies that raise their prices. Consequently, the responsiveness of these substances to price is an important parameter in determining the optimal level of taxation or the impacts of legalization of cocaine or marijuana. The economics of addiction is very relevant to these issues because recent theoretical advances predict that addictive goods should be more sensitive to price than previously believed. Current empirical studies confirm this prediction.

The analysis of regulations affecting addictive or habitual goods has drawn considerable controversy. Some studies have suggested that such regulations have only small welfare benefits, as consumers value these goods despite health benefits from quitting, while other studies suggest that information or behavioral problems make existing consumption decisions a poor guide to welfare evaluation. We examine potential utility offsets to health benefits of regulations affecting addictive or habitual goods theoretically and empirically. Our analysis focuses on individuals who consume these goods only, ignoring other social costs and benefits. Theoretically, we show the importance of several factors including: money saved in addition to health improvements; differentiating steady-state utility losses from short-term withdrawal costs; lack of utility loss for people dissuaded from starting to consume the good; and accounting for utility consequences of explicit or implicit cost increases. Our empirical analysis considers regulations that affect smoking. To measure the welfare cost of smoking cessation, we divide the population into those with more and less rational smoking behavior and use the valuation of smoking from more rational smokers to impute values of losses for less rational smokers. Our results show that the utility cost of smoking cessation is small relative to the health gains in people for whom withdrawal costs are the main utility loss of quitting, and even among people who have some ongoing loss, the utility offsets represent 20%–25% of the health gains. While marginal smokers induced to quit by regulations can be expected to have low or no steady-state loss, even this higher estimate is far below prevailing estimates of the utility cost of smoking used by the Food and Drug Administration and other analysts.

Research relevance. Consumption of addictive goods and its impact on the human capital is widely discussed in contemporary research literature, not only on the micro- and macro- but also on the meso-level. At the present stage of the ongoing transformations we are prompted to reassess current approaches to this problem and to re-evaluate its public significance; moreover, practical application of available research outcomes should also be reconsidered. In Russia, consumption of addictive goods is subject to significant regional variations determined by socio-economic and other factors. Research aim. The study is aimed at investigating the impact of consumption of addictive goods (alcohol) on the quality of Russian consumers' human capital and at building a system of indicators to estimate this impact. Data and methods. The study uses the methods of comparative analysis, expert estimation, ranking, and economic-statistical analysis, it also proposes a spatial approach to problems associated with regional variations in human capital of consumers of addictive goods. The study relies on the Russian and international research evidence; the data of the Federal State Statistics Service and its regional offices; expert estimates and the authors' own calculations. Results. The study demonstrates the connection between consumption of addictive goods and consumers' human capital. It also describes a system of statistical indicators that can be used for estimating the impact of alcohol consumption on human capital and the criteria such indicators should meet. Based on the proposed indicator set, the study analyzes and compares the trends in human capital deterioration on the regional and national levels. As a result of cross-regional analysis, regions with the highest and lowest figures of human capital deterioration are identified. Conclusions. As their addiction progresses, alcohol consumers face an increasing devaluation of their human capital. This parameter varies significantly across Russian regions due to a range of climatic, regional, and socio-economic factors, which should be taken into account when devising and implementing regional alcohol policies. The existing system of statistical observations uses a limited set of indicators that needs to be expanded to allow for a more comprehensive cross-regional analysis.

In the last years, the analysis of the demand for addictive goods has received renewed and increasing interest. Since Becker and Murphy’s (1998) fundamental contribution, theoretical and empirical studies have produced a large literature on the price and nonprice determinants of alcohol and tobacco demand. Theoretical and empirical studies on alcohol and tobacco consumption have drawn attention to two topics. On the one hand, one strand of literature has focused on the dynamics of addictive consumption and on the price responsiveness of the demand for addictive goods, analysing the intertemporal decisions of either myopic or far-sighted rational individuals. Empirical research on this topic has addressed the issues connected to the application of Becker and Murphy’s (1988) rational addiction model, both with aggregated (Becker et al., 1994) and disaggregated (Chaloupka, 1991; Baltagi and Griffin, 1995, 2001; Baltagi and Geishecker, 2006) data. On the other hand, the growing availability of microdata at a high disaggregated level has allowed to model the censoring nature of alcohol and tobacco consumption, accounting for zero observations and simultaneously exploiting the richness of survey data information to control for heterogeneous individual (or household) behaviour (Jones, 1989; Blaylock and Blisard, 1992, 1993; Garcia and Labeaga, 1996; Yenand Jones, 1996). From a policy perspective, cross-sectional surveys enables to improve the knowledge of the impacts of demographic and socio-economic variables on alcohol and tobacco expenditure and help the design of public health programs to achieve drinking and smoking-reduction objectives. Recent developments in the analysis of addictive goods have followed three main directions. Firstly, some authors (Jimenez-Martin et al., 1998; Labeaga, 1999; Jones and Labeaga, 2003), using genuine and/or pseudo panel data, have tried to unify the two above-mentioned approaches, by explicitly dealing with the issues of measurement errors, unobserved individual heterogeneity and censoring in rational or myopic models of addiction. Secondly, the case of multiple addictive goods has been taken into account to analyze, together with own consumption dynamics, both intra-temporal and intertemporal interactions between goods. In particular, in the context of intertemporal analysis of addiction, it is worth remarking the works of Bask and Melkersson (2004), Pierani and Tiezzi (2005) and Fanelli and Mazzocchi (2006), that extend the rational habit formation model to consider the case of two addictive goods. Finally, following the works of Manski (1993, 1995), several studies have emphasized the importance of social interactions and peer effects on smoking and drinking decisions (Auld, 2005; Krauth, 2005; Powell et al., 2005). Social interactions are widely regarded as important determinants of many behavioural and economic outcomes, based on the idea that the utility that an individual receives from doing a certain activity depends on the actions of the other individuals in the person’s reference group (Becker, 1996; Brock and Durlauf, 2001). This study reviews the empirical study of cigarette consumption of the U.S., while investigating, the demand for cigarettes is estimated in the previous literature by using either cross-section data or time series data. Without considering few specific problems, biased estimations may result in imprecise estimation of price elasticities. The primary aim of this paper is to obtain better estimates of the price elasticity of demand for cigarette by using a panel data approach. The common problems that are with cross-section data and time series data can be avoided with this approach to reduce co-linearity among the explanatory variables and to improve the efficiency of these estimates. The study presents a set of estimates for the U.S. cigarette market. We find the dynamic fixed estimator (DFE) is superior to pool mean group estimator and mean group estimator. Using DFE as the estimator, the short run price elasticity is -0.12 and the long run price elasticity is -0.72. We compare the estimated price elasticities with the optimal price elasticities, finding a gap between the two values. The current estimated price elasticity is very steady and well below the optimal price elasticity, this implies that firms can increase its price to make more revenues. In other words, so long as the price elasticity of the demand for cigarettes is inelastic, we would expect that firms will increase the price of cigarette and enjoy excess profits.

Pregnant women with substance use issues are a doubly at-risk group in desperate need of support. Using open-ended interviews, participant-observation, and media analysis, I examine the support provided by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) in Massachusetts for pregnant women who seek treatment at Project Empowerment. Project Empowerment provides prenatal care, maintenance therapy, and other services to expectant mothers who struggle with substance use issues. Drawing upon Foucault’s (1975) notion of surveillance, I explore how pregnant women with substance use issues are surveilled by agencies, and how these surveillance agencies structure their care and policies through their definitions of what it means to be a “good mother.” I argue that through the Department of Children and Families definition of the “good mother,” DCF produces an unintended paradox of support for pregnant women with substance use issues in Massachusetts.

During COVID-19 pandemic, internet along with information and communication technologies (ICTs) were decisive in overcoming distances and minimizing social isolation. They have ensured distance learning, but also business continuity, through the general implementation of teleworking. Thus, parents had to perform different roles within the same environment, which were no longer separated spatially. This context makes it difficult to reach an equilibrium, especially when parents have also to prevent the necessary internet usage of their children from becoming an addiction. Hence, it is proposed a study to assess (1) the causation and moderation effect of internet addiction on family-to-work conflict and (2) the moderation effect of teleworking on work-family balance, considering two potential drivers: family-to-work conflict, caused by internet addiction and work-to-family conflict, caused by role transitions. Data was collected from European parents with resident children. As a result, it was found that internet addiction is a predictor and a moderator of work-to-family transitions effect, at the same time that, teleworking is a moderator of family-to-work conflict effect on the perceived balance. The research will be aligned with boundary theory, and it will consider the second lockdown since the pandemic started. Theoretical and practical implications will be discussed.

Given the current literature debate on whether or not Problematic Use of Social Media can be considered a behavioral addiction, the present study had the purpose to examine the differences between different levels of Social Media Addiction (no risk, at-risk and addicted) in inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, in an Emotional Go/No-Go Task. Emotional stimuli included Social Media (SM) cues, and neutral stimuli were Traffic Signs (TS). The paradigm involved two main tasks: SM Go, where participants developed a response to SM stimuli and ignored TF cues and a TS Go, where the contrary response occurred. Order of conditions was randomized. Attentional bias and inhibitory control were inferred from the interaction level of addiction x Go-Condition, and cognitive flexibility by the interaction level of addiction x Order of the Go-Conditions. Results showed the presence of an attentional bias towards SM cues in SM Go-Condition in the at-risk and addicted groups, but only in SM Go-Condition. The addicted group also showed a significantly better discriminative ability in SM Go-Condition than the at-risk group, but only among those who started the paradigm with SM Go-Condition. A lower decision bias was equally seen in the addicted group in comparison to the no-risk group. With the growing use of SM, this study has some implications. These results suggest that individuals with low-medium SM addiction symptoms severity may just not be interested in controlling their SM use patterns, instead of having real deficits in inhibiting their behavior
Dado o atual debate em relação a se o Uso Problemático das Redes Sociais consiste ou não numa adição comportamental, o presente estudo teve como objetivo examinar as diferenças no controlo inibitório e flexibilidade cognitiva entre grupos de diferentes níveis de severidade de adição às redes sociais (sem risco, em risco, dependente), numa tarefa Go/No-Go Emocional. Os estímulos emocionais incluíram estímulos relacionados com as Redes Sociais (RS), e os estímulos neutros constituíram Sinais de Trânsito (ST). O paradigma envolveu duas tarefas principais: Condição RS-Go, onde os participantes responderam a estímulos das RS e ignoraram os ST; e a Condição ST-Go, onde desenvolveram a resposta contrária. A ordem das condições foi aleatorizada. O viés cognitivo e o controlo inibitório foram inferidos através da interação nível de adição às RS x Condição-Go, e a flexibilidade cognitiva pela interação nível de adição às RS x Ordem das Condições. Resultados principais indicaram a presença de um viés atencional em direção a estímulos das RS na Condição RS-Go no grupo em-risco e dependente das RS. O grupo dependente apresentou significativamente também uma melhor capacidade discriminativa na Condição RS-Go em comparação ao grupo em risco, mas apenas entre aqueles que começaram o paradigma com a Condição RS-Go. O grupo dependente revelou igualmente um viés decisional significativamente mais baixo na condição RS-Go em comparação ao grupo sem risco. Com a crescente utilização das RS, o presente estudo apresenta algumas implicações. Os resultados sugerem que indivíduos com uma severidade baixa-moderada de sintomatologia de adição às RS podem não estar interessados em controlar os seus padrões de uso às RS, em vez de apresentarem défices reais na sua capacidade inibitória.

This chapter discusses the policy prescriptions that arise from the research in behavioral economics. A frequent prescription, in various contexts, is to restrict people's choice set—which falls in the category of strong paternalism. The most compelling case for paternalistic intervention is that of higher taxes for addictive goods, or the so-called sin taxes. Such a tax reduces the current consumption of an addictive good by time-inconsistent consumers; this, in turn, reduces consumption of the good by consumers' future incarnations. Moreover, rivalry should be priced by using Pigovian taxation. The chapter then looks at the mildest form of manipulation—libertarian paternalism—which occurs whenever the government, having decided which outcome is “good” for the people, fools them into making the “right” decision, not by restricting their choices but by framing their choice problem so as to favor the preferred outcome.

The chapter expounds advertising practices from the standpoint of social marketing, wherein government should act responsibly and play a key role in regulating consumption. The governing body of a country has an important responsibility to protect the interests of its citizens. Of particular significance is to discourage the consumption of demerit goods, like tobacco and liquor, which harm direct users, as well as people in vicinity. Governments in numerous countries prohibit advertisements of demerit goods on popular media, to dissuade potential consumers from falling prey to addictive substances. However, companies dealing in barred products look out for surrogate advertising to endorse every permissible product under the same brand name, other than the one that is banned or deemed injurious to health. Thus, there is an underlying subliminal message which is garbed by acceptable promotional strategies. The primary objective of the present chapter is to examine the rationale behind surrogate advertising, various forms of executing them, ethical considerations involved, the government's response, the overall impact, and the way ahead from the Indian perspective.

Consumption of psychoactive substances and other addictive behaviors is a risk factor that can disrupt the good somatic, psychological, social and educational development of adolescents. The fact that many adolescents consume tobacco, alcohol, cannabis or other substances, and a significant number of them end up being diagnosed with substance use disorder and other associated disorders, requires multiple human, financial and material resources and special attention from specialists. involved in reducing the demand and supply of drugs. Addiction treatment is a complex issue, requiring a multidisciplinary approach and long-term co-optation of representatives of educational institutions, adolescents and members of local communities in which various prevention or medical, psychological or social assistance programs are carried out. Cooperation is very important for the efficient use of resources available to each party involved in the process of recovering those affected by addictive behaviors, raising awareness of the risks of continued substance use, reducing stigma, conducting interventions to meet the needs of beneficiaries, families them and the members of the community in which they live, the diversification of support services, the provision of continuous psychosocial support and the reintegration of adolescents into the family, social and educational environment.

The article is devoted to the problem of dependent behavior. Today, a large number of people are moving away from the difficulties of real life, starting to use various substances, becoming dependent on them. Normal human behavior tends to be dependent on their knowledge, skills, experience. Deviant behavior is associated with a person's departure from reality. Such behavior, according to psychologists, is considered addictive. With the help of the use of certain substances that change the mental state, the addict tries to evade responsibility, hide the inability to communicate, and be free in choosing an individual development path. The birth of addiction occurs in early childhood, when the correct communication of the mother by the child is disrupted. Dependent people are unfortunate orphans who cannot find a "good mother" all their lives.

Sleep disorder is a condition that may be very damaging and may be related to poor mental health and low academic performance. The causes of sleep disorder had been interest of many researches for decades, however not a realistic solution could be found until today. Do new scientific improvements and new software do good to our dentistry students or does it do bad? Should we put a restriction to Social Media usage like WhatsApp group messages and night-time Smartphone use? Does Social Media effect students sleep and their academic performance? To understand this we had to deliver a research study in Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University dentistry students. Although there are lots of research studies about sleep disorder and social media, there were not any studies delivered in Cyprus. WhatsApp groups are widely used in Cyprus Health and Sciences University for academic purposes like information sharing and social life communications. Sleep performance of students is closely related to their success. A detailed literature review is done about Sleep Disorder and Social Media Effects on Sleep Disorder. A Good sleep is important for all students and may be it is more important for dentistry students who have a very intense course schedule than the other students. Sleep Disorder Questionarie and Social Media Addiction Questionnaire is used to get information about students Sleep- Social Media Behaviors. In total 150 students have attained to this research study and there were interesting differences according to students demographic properties. Recommendations to improve quality of sleep and to prevent social media addiction is given by the authors.
