Resumen

The nature of Internet and Intranet Web applications has changed from a static content-distribution medium into an interactive, dynamic medium, often used to serve multimedia from back-end object-relational databases to Web-enabled clients. Consequently, developers need to make an informed technological choice for developing software that supports a Web-based application for distributing multimedia over networks. This decision is based on several factors. Among the factors are ease of programming, richness of features, scalability, and performance. The research focuses on these key factors when distributing images from an Oracle9i database using Java Servlets, JSP, ASP, and ASP.NET as the server-side development technologies. Prototype applications are developed and tested within each technology: one for single image serving and the other for multiple image serving. A matrix of recommendations is provided to distinguish which technology, or combination of technologies, provides the best performance and development platform for image serving within the studied envirorunent.

Denna studie undersöker om, och i så fall hur, utvecklingen av webbapplikationer med ASP kan förbättras genom tillämpning av COM-objekt. För att göra detta används fyra jämförelsekriterier som tagits fram utifrån fördelar och nackdelar med ASP respektive COM-objekt. Dessa kriterier avser att jämföra ASP och COM-objekt i exekveringstid av scriptkod, återanvändning av funktionalitet, inkapsling av databasrelaterad kod och prototyputveckling. Det resultat som erhållits av genomförandet visar att utvecklingen av webbapplikationer med ASP kan i olika situationer tillämpa COM-objekt för att: förbättra exekveringstiden av scriptkod, förenkla återanvändningen av funktionalitet och göra ASP-koden mer strukturerad genom att kapsla in databasrelaterad kod. Vad gäller prototyputveckling anses dock ASP vara bättre anpassat, då COM-objekt kräver noggrann planering av gränssnittet och dessutom är beroende av ett testprogram för att kunna testa prototypen.

There is always a need for easy-to-follow processes that enable accurate and non-time consuming solutions. Nowadays we see a lot of different approaches to development processes in software engineering. This project is concerned with how to manage a software development process in a reliable, secure and efficient way. Software is available which provides some help for project managers / administrators to work more productively, with effective communication. Using such systems, it is possible to keep track of all the phases of development, including task distribution, making maximum use of previous hands-on experience and increasing productivity, to deliver a finished product in minimum time. No existing solution, however, fulfills all the desirable criteria. This paper describes the motivation, design and implementation of an improved development management system using Active Server Pages and Microsoft Internet Information Services with a backend Microsoft Access Database developed using a waterfall software development process. The resulting system is described and evaluated. This system will be beneficial for software houses, because they can communicate on the web, allowing efficiency gains by avoiding the need to call meetings for distribution of tasks among employees, with the additional advantage of location-transparent team management through the Internet.

Manufacturing systems are complex entities comprised of people, processes, products, information systems and data, material processing, handling, and storage systems. Because of this complexity, systems must be modeled using a variety of views and modeling formalisms. In order to design and analyze manufacturing systems, the multiple views and models often need to be considered simultaneously. However, no single tool or computing environment currently exists that allows this to be done in an efficient and intelligible manner. New tools such as HTML and VRML present a promising approach for tackling these problems. They make possible environments where the different models can coexist and where mapping/linking between the models can be achieved. This research is concerned with developing a hybrid HTML/VRML environment for manufacturing systems modeling and analysis. Experiment was performed to compare this hybrid-modeling HTML/VRML environment to the traditional database environment in order to answer typical design/analysis questions associated with manufacturing systems, and to establish the potential advantages of this approach. Analyzing results obtained from the experiment indicated that the HTML/VRML approach might result in better understanding of a manufacturing system than the traditional database approach.

Multi-tier enterprise systems consist of more than two distributed tiers. The design of multi-tier systems is considerably more involved than two tier systems. Not all systems should be designed as multi-tier, but if the decision to build a multi-tier system is made, there are benefits to this type of system design. CSCources is a system that tracks computer science course information. The requirements of this system indicate that it should be a multi-tier system. This system has three tiers, client, business and data. Microsoft tools are used such as Visual Basic (VB) that was used to build the client tier that physically resides on the client machine. VB is also used to create the business tier. This tier consists of the business layer and the data layer. The business layer contains most of the business logic for the system. The data layer communicates with the data tier. Microsoft SQL Server (MS SQL) is used for the data store. The database containsseveral tables and stored procedures. The stored procedures are used to add, edit, update and delete records in the database. Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) is used to control modifications to the database. The transaction and security features available in the MTS environment are used. The business tier and data tier may or may not reside on the same physical computer or server. Active Server Pages (ASP) was built that accesses the business tier to retrieve the needed information for display on a web page. Information technologies and mobile telecommunications rapidly enter our personal and social life. Mobile phone is no longer luxury – it has become a necessity. Growing volumes of the mobile services has caused a need to expand the mobile service employment opportunities in the Internet portals. Today’s portals, created using the means, offered by software manufacturers, employ exclusively the mobile Internet service, thanks to which the users can see and manage the necessary information and process of the portal at any time and from anywhere. The problem is related with the fact that mobile Internet services are still expensive in Lithuania. Therefore one should look for cheaper ways to reach and manage portal information. In order to solve this problem one can consider the SMS and MMS message sending, suggested by mobile technologies. Basic aim of the work is to create an entertainment portal, rendering the user both various Internet entertainments (e.g. Internet acquaintances, games), and mobile entertainment (e.g. sending messages, logos, melodies, animations and games for mobile phone) as well as a wide range of mobile services to be used to obtain and to manage the portal information. La thèse s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet européen VENUS. Dans ce contexte, la photogrammétrie est utilisée pour produire des relevés 3D sur les objets. La connaissance sur ces objets provient à la fois de l'archéologie sous-marine et de la photogrammétrie. Les informations étant structurées, hiérarchisées et parfois incomparables, nous nous sommes intéressés aux bases de croyance partiellement préordonnées. Par ailleurs, l'acquisition des données peut conduire à l'apparition d'incohérence. Nous avons étendu l'approche des R-ensembles à la restauration de la cohérence. Nous avons également proposé un cadre de travail pour la révision de bases de croyance partiellement préordonnées et deux relations d'inférence lexicograhique. nous avons fourni pour ces approches une mise en oeuvre en utilisant la programmation logique avec ASP. Finalement, nous avons implanté notre méthode de restauration de la cohérence dans le contexte de VENUS et nous l'avons testé sur les relevés issus du projet
This PHD has been performed within the European VENUS project. In this context, photogrammetry is used to produced 3D survey on objects and the knowledge on studied artefacts comes from both underwater archaeology and photogrammetry. This information being structured, hierachized and sometimes incomparable, we focused on partially preordered belief bases. Data acquisition possibly leads to inconsistency. We extended the Removed Set approach to inconsistency handling. To compare subsets of formulae to remove in order to restore consistency, we introduced the lexicographic comparator. Moreover, we proposed a new framework for the revision of partially preordered belief bases and two lexicographic inference relations. We proposed an implementation stemming from ASP. Finally, we implemented our inconsistency handling method in the VENUS context and we provided an experimental study on 3D surveys of the project
