Resumen
Basic characteristics of electromagnetic fields in the microwave, radiofrequency, and extremely low frequency ranges and their interactions with biological tissues are introduced, and parameters such as polarization and specific absorption rate used for safety assessment are highlighted. Techniques and instrumentation for measuring these parameters are discussed. The concepts of dosimetry are introduced and examples of electromagnetic field safety guidelines and standards are outlined. The chapter closes with a discussion of some topics directly relevant to safety of clinical procedures, such as hyperthermia, and diathermy, as well as electromagnetic interference with equipment and implanted devices caused by the presence of mobile communications and radiofrequency identification systems.

Resumen
The fundamental practical principles applied to any radiation protection problem are discussed. Types of radiation that may be encountered include α‎-particles, β‎-particles, γ‎-rays, neutrons, X-rays, or a combination. Each presents its own particular practical problems in terms of radiation protection, and the properties and practical principles that should be considered for each are outlined. The framework required to manage radiation protection and the practical techniques important in restricting exposure are discussed. The practical control measures of time, distance, and shielding that are invoked to restrict exposure from external radiation are considered for each type of radiation. Methods for limiting intake of radioactive material through ingestion, inhalation, and absorption to minimize internal exposure are described.

When two or more drugs are administered simultaneously, the pharmacological response may be greater or less than the sum of the effects of the individual drugs. One drug may antagonize or potentiate the effects of the other and there may be also qualitative differences in response. Although some drug interactions increase the toxicity or result in loss of therapeutic effect, others are beneficial. Indeed, modern anaesthetic techniques depend on beneficial drug interactions. A sound combination of drugs helps clinicians to increase both the efficacy and safety of drug treatment. Drugs may interact on a pharmaceutical, pharmacodynamic, or pharmacokinetic basis. Many pharmacodynamic interactions are predictable and can be avoided by the use of common sense. However, it is much more difficult to predict the likelihood of pharmacokinetic and pharmaceutical interactions despite good prior knowledge of pharmacokinetics and chemical properties of individual drugs. Pharmaceutical drug interactions usually occur before the drug is given to the patient and they are caused by chemical (such as acid–base, salt formation, oxidation–reduction, hydrolysis, or epimerization) or physical (such as adsorption/absorption or emulsion breaking) reactions. When drugs have a pharmacokinetic interaction, one drug alters the absorption, distribution, or the elimination of the other drug. Many pharmacokinetic drug interactions are due to inhibition or induction of cytochrome P450 enzymes. Pharmacodynamic drug interactions are caused by drugs having an effect on the same receptors or the same physiological system. This chapter gives anaesthetists an overview of clinically relevant perioperative drug interactions.

Resumen
This article describes the use of nanostructured probes to enhance optical and vibrational spectroscopic imaging for biomedical applications. Engineered probes and surfaces are promising tools for enhancing signals for ultrasensitive detection of diseases like carcinoma. Two methods of interest are surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for IR and Raman modalities, respectively. SERS and SEIRA can be broadly categorized under a common modality termed surface-enhanced vibrational spectroscopy. This article first reviews various breakthrough findings reported in SERS and SEIRA, along with different types ofsubstrates and contrast agents used in realizing the enhancement and theories proposed to explain these findings. It then considers the configurations of nano-LAMPs and presents example results demonstrating their optical resonances and tunability. Finally, it evaluates a few techniques for fabricating multilayered nanoparticles and highlights some issues with respect to fabrication.
