Resumen
Joint Applied Project
The Abrams tank has had an Operational Requirements Document (ORD) requirement for embedded training (ET) since 1994 and has successfully demonstrated the capability as early as 2001. The most challenging aspect of implementing ET has been to get the Abrams combat development community (User) and materiel development community (Product Manager) to equally consider the need for ET among competing combat capability. The need and priority for embedded training has not been effectively conveyed. Due to the interpretations of embedded training requirements, the direction to PM Abrams to implement embedded training has been weak at best, while the perceived User need for ET continues to grow. Since the technology has been demonstrated, the combat developer has begun to understand the capability and more effectively define the desired state (how he would use it and its benefits). Furthermore, the Army's style of fighting has changed; therefore, the Army's method of training must also change. Embedded training should be recognized by the materiel developer as an essential training tool necessary to keep Soldiers' skills sharp in the changing training environment.

To prepare for combat, the US Army utilizes the National Training Center (NTC) to test and certify all units before deployment to combat operations. During the past 5 years, observers have noted below standard Operational Readiness (OR) Rates in the MI fleet during training at NTC. The Army's Program Manager for the MI Abrams requested this thesis examine the MI performance at NTC, possible reasons for the performance, and recommend solutions to those issues. The first research question asks if Ml OR rates are statistically below the Army Standard. Through collection of OR data throughout the Army, this study confirmed using statistical hypothesis testing that OR rates at NTC are below standard. The next three questions used regression analysis to identify possible reasons for the low performance. During the course of the study, mileage driven on each tank both before and during NTC was proven to have no effect on tank performance. Analysis of the parts stockage breadth at NTC warehouses was shown to be effective at predicting parts failures, but could recover up to 1.3% OR rate by adding 28 additional parts to the normal stockage list. Finally, analysis of individual unit maintenance performance measures showed individual programs have significant effect on Ml OR rates, specifically when examining controlled substitution policy and proper reporting procedures. Recommendations for the correction of the problem include the development of a more reliable mileage reporting system, additional research specifically into the time requirements for each unit, additional training for unit maintenance leaders, and parts failures trends during high-intensity training.

This thesis is an independent study to conduct a detailed problem analysis to determine if a methodology can be derived to map the states of the M1A2 simulator to specific doctrinal tasks. Specifically, what are Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTP); Crew Drills; and Battle Drills and can they be mapped to specific states of the M1A2 simulator? If so, then demonstrate such a methodology using a small subset of the M1A2 simulator stimuli and a given doctrinal task. Additionally, to identify problem areas associated with state to task mapping, such as 'state explosion' and recommend a possible solution. We conclude through our research that a methodology can be derived and have demonstrated that it is reasonable to take input in the form of stimuli from the driver's instrument panel and evaluate current state and anticipate future states within the context of a given tactical or training scenario.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) has mandated that every component that meets certain cost and management criteria in the Department of Defense's (DoD) tangible inventory must have a valid Item Unique Identification (IUID) mark by December 2010. The IUID program is expected to increase force readiness, enhance the lifecycle management of assets, and provide more accurate asset valuation to achieve unqualified audit opinions on DoD financial statements. One of the challenges of the program is to achieve IUID-marking saturation throughout in-use, or legacy, inventories with minimal interruption of operational readiness. The purpose of this project is to propose an effective implementation strategy for the legacy items that meet the DoD's requirements for IUID marking in the US Marine Corps M1A1 Abrams tank community. This plan could potentially serve as a model for other communities facing the challenge of IUID implementation. This project examines different implementation alternatives and identifies and develops the determined best course of action. In addition, an estimation of the costs to implement the chosen plan will be provided for comparison and decision-making purposes.

Resumen
This dissertation focuses on the roles played by the United Nations experts Charles Abrams and G. Holmes Perkins in the foundation of METU Faculty of Architecture. It aims to highlight the ideas and ideals that informed Abrams&rsquo
s and Perkins&rsquo
s METU projects, and to delineate an integrative and multifaceted picture of their political and educational contexts. This picture may serve as a basis for future researches on the institutional and educational histories of METU Faculty of Architecture. It may also help to better understand the contributions of other administrators and instructors -- including First Acting Dean Thomas B. A. Godfrey and Dean Abdullah Kuran -- who played important parts in the formation of the educational direction of the Faculty. Abrams, as a United Nations consultant, paved the way for the foundation of METU Faculty of Architecture by recommending a school of architecture and community planning in Ankara, for the education of professionals competent in responding to the problems caused by rapid industrial expansion and urbanization. Perkins contributed to the foundation process of METU Faculty of Architecture. As the head of the team of experts from the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts, who were sent by the United Nations to Ankara in 1955, he advised the Government of Turkey on &ldquo
the creation of a Faculty of Architecture, a Faculty of City and Regional Planning&rdquo
and two research institutes, as a first step towards an institution of university rank, and with a view to promoting &ldquo
a newer, more practical and modern approach to architecture and urban planning&rdquo
in Turkey. In this dissertation, Abrams&rsquo
s and Perkins&rsquo
s METU projects constitute a starting point for exploring significant themes in the changing political and educational trajectories in America in the mid-twentieth century. The influence of different interpretations of the notions of democracy, individuality and society on technical assistance, urban development policies and architectural education is also investigated. Abrams&rsquo
s professional and academic position as a &ldquo
reflective practitioner&rdquo
is appraised in the light of John Dewey&rsquo
s concepts of democracy, democratic education and &ldquo
reflective thinking.&rdquo
The changing professional and societal roles of the architect and the changing demands upon architectural education in the 1950s framed the background of Perkins&rsquo
s educational approach. The reappraisal of liberal education as part of professional education of the architect, the rising significance of an interdisciplinary pedagogical approach, and the development of &ldquo
organized research&rdquo
in architecture were among the major themes shaping new orientations in the field of architectural education in America in those years. In the dissertation, the lasting validity of these themes for today is highlighted.

Domingo, Domingo Lourdes.

This thesis starts with a first corpus of M. Night Shyamalan’s full-length films, which reveals a thematic and stylistic continuity in all of them. From this paradigm, it has been researched whether their plot and expressive similarities are also present in a group of contemporary TV series, representing a new shared and articulated trend which is observed in the current scene of audiovisual fiction, the fantastic as a form and its impact on the spectator. To this end, the large majority of filmography by M. Night Shyamalan and the TV series Lost (J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof), Fringe (J.J. Abrams), The Leftovers (Damon Lindelof), Les Revenants (Fabrice Gobert) and Resurrection (Aaron Zelman) have been studied from a hermeneutical, esthetic, narrative, and phenomenological perspective. On one hand, in all these stories which are crossed by death, it has been detected that they all share horizons with old religious, dramatic, literary and cinematographical traditions, but also on the other hand, they bring together a rhetorical and poetical renovation through metaphors of the sublime. The idiosyncrasy of these figures causes the enunciative and existential pause in its diegesis and the ambiguity of the identities which inhabit them. Finally, from this analysis, it can also been determined that the reading of these fictions is distinguished by a semantical and narrative special work of reupdating and also by a hermeneutical solitude of the reader in the face of final threshold. This all causes a fantastic trend that gets the spectator ready for his death.

Hannaford, Marc Edward. "One Line, Many Views: Perspectives on Music Theory, Composition, and Improvisation through the Work of Muhal Richard Abrams". Thesis, 2019. https://doi.org/10.7916/d8-5xga-2k56.

Texto completo
Resumen
This dissertation examines aspects of the creative practice of Muhal Richard Abrams, composer, improviser, pianist, and cofounder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Abrams’s work intersects with various facets of creative music. I focus on free improvisation, both as a stand-alone performance and in conjunction with through composed music, his engagement with writings by theorist Joseph Schillinger, and his work as a composer. This study provides an historical overview of Abrams’s life and output, supplies analytical accounts of his music and creative practice, contributes to critical issues in music theory and analysis through these examinations, and diversifies the music, musicians, and topics that comprise the discipline of music theory. My examinations position Abrams as an important figure in twentieth century music, both improvised and composed, and expand studies in music theory and analysis. I offer new perspectives on and a framework for the analysis of free improvisation and intra-ensemble interaction, challenge traditional binaries between music theory and black experimental music, explore the influence of Schillinger’s theoretical treatise, The Schillinger System of Musical Composition ([1946] 1978), on Abrams’s work as a composer, explicate a set of idiosyncratic theoretical publications to suggest an underground genealogy of music theory, and posit an analytical vista that sits at the intersection of music performance, disability, and critical race studies. My overview of Abrams’s life and work draws on historical scholarship to tease out details of his development and practice in Chicago and New York, and analyzes contemporaneous articles from magazines, newspapers, and journals in order to provide a snapshot of the reception of Abrams’s work and the various scenes that he traversed. In response to Abrams’s individual approach to interactive free improvisation, which functions as either a stand-alone performance or alongside composed music, I employ the concept of affordances from ecological psychology. My affordance based analytical framework facilities a reappraisal of musicians’ interactions during free improvisation and also theorizes the relationship that emerges when free improvisation is preceded and/or followed by composed material. I analyze Abrams’s improvised duet with Fred Anderson, “Focus, ThruTime…Time—>” (2011) and his quartet rendition of “Munktmunk” (1987) to illustrate my framework and elucidate the richness of these performances. I perform a close reading of Schillinger’s theoretical treatise to suggest resonances between Abrams’s creative practice and the text. I do not aim to elect Schillinger as a kind of fountainhead for Abrams’s practice. Rather, I argue that the numerous resonances between Schillinger’s text and Abrams’s practice connote reasons why the treatise strongly appealed to Abrams, such that he employed it both compositionally and pedagogically for a large portion of his life. I extrapolate from this discussion to outline and theorize an underground genealogy of music theory that represents a more diverse set of music theoretical practices than is often discussed in the discipline. Finally, I analyze composed portions of four works by Abrams: “Inner Lights” (1985), “Charlie in the Parker” (1977), “Hearinga” (1989), and “Piano Duet #1” (1987). My analyses of the first three of these pieces intimate the presence of some of Schillinger’s theoretical principles. Abrams does not simply realize Schillinger’s theoretical method in his work, but rather maintains artistic agency by selectively filtering those suggestions through his own pluralistic aesthetic. Finally, I combine recent work on disability in music and critical race theory to analyze “Piano Duet #1,” in which the two pianists’ bodies are restricted in performance. This analysis offers a generative reappraisal of music performance and disability studies in light of race while also elucidating some of the richness of Abrams’s composition.

Carter, Daniel L. "Stream Restoration Assessment of Abrams Creek in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Management Implications and Comparison of Empirical and Analytical Physical Assessment Approaches". 2007. http://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_gradthes/268.

Texto completo
Resumen
Natural resource managers in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park requested the assistance of the University of Tennessee Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to assess Abrams Creek for potential stream restoration needs. A presumed, unstable study reach and a stable reference reach were identified on Abrams Creek in Cades Cove. Chemical, biological and physical assessments were completed on Abrams Creek in order to evaluate ecological health and channel stability of the stream. Water quality and ecological (fish and habitat surveys) data acquired by National Park Service, Tennessee Valley Authority and the University of Tennessee were assessed. The physical assessment included two approaches; they were: 1) empirical or reference reach approach; and 2) analytical or non-reference reach approach. The current empirical technique used was the analog Natural Channel Design. The current analytical techniques were the hydraulic, sediment transport and erosion models (HEC-RAS, CONCEPTS). These physical assessment techniques were used to determine bankfull or effective flows, sedimentation, stream stability, and ecohydraulics. In addition to using these techniques for the Park’s management objectives, they were applied to both reaches for comparison in order to clarify areas where professional judgment may introduce uncertainty. From comprehensive physical assessments no system wide instabilities were observed but some riparian area differences and localized erosion were noted. Recommendations for potential restoration needs on Abrams Creek include localized stabilization of stream banks and vegetating the riparian corridor along the study reach.

Manis, Raechelle Lee. "“More than memory” : haunted performance in post-9/11 popular U.S. culture". Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2010-05-1319.

Texto completo
Resumen
This dissertation combines performance analysis, rhetorical criticism, and psychoanalytical theory to analyze three performance “texts” as sites of haunting in post-9/11 America: Tony Kushner’s 2001 U.S. debut of Homebody/Kabul, the Broadway musical Wicked, and ABC’s television drama Lost. It contributes a nuanced, theorized reading of the civil implications of post-9/11 popular American culture as “more than memory” by demonstrating how these performances suggested “what might be” in ways that subverted Bush’s responses to the attacks. The first chapter reads Homebody/Kabul against the national addresses delivered by Bush in the first weeks after the attacks and argue that the 2001 New York Theatre Workshop performance created a space for audiences to reconsider the version of “mourning” encouraged by the Bush administration. The type of mourning modeled/enabled by Homebody/Kabul, I assert, is different from that against which Derrida warns. Rather than “silencing ghosts” (Gunn 82) through the integration of loss, Homebody/Kabul makes a space for conversing with, and models living with, ghosts. The second chapter argues that the Wicked’s Ozians are stuck in a state of melancholia, refusing to speak to/with the ghost of Elphaba. Because they refuse to reckon with Elphaba, they literally finish exactly where they began—with “No One Mourn[ing] the Wicked.” By reading Wicked against the celebratory rhetoric of the Bush administration after declaring “Mission Accomplished” in Iraq, we can understand the way the United States as a nation was (and may still be, in 2010) haunted by the Bush administration's failure to lead the nation in mourning effectively and ethically and by its incessant rhetoric of evil. The third chapter advocates for Lost as a hauntological reckoning with 9/11 that models ethical witnessing as a potentially generative meeting of human beings across cultures at the site of trauma. An alternative to the fear that the Bush administration encouraged leading up to Lost’s premiere and through its final season, ethical witnessing as modeled on Lost suggests that civilization stands to thrive where difference is honored—and risks toppling into chaos where the alternative “us against them” mentality (Other anxiety) prevails.

Hawkins, John Michael. "The Limits of Fire Support: American Finances and Firepower Restraint during the Vietnam War". Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/151185.

Resumen
Excessive unobserved firepower expenditures by Allied forces during the Vietnam War defied the traditional counterinsurgency principle that population protection should be valued more than destruction of the enemy. Many historians have pointed to this discontinuity in their arguments, but none have examined the available firepower records in detail. This study compiles and analyzes available, artillery-related U.S. and Allied archival records to test historical assertions about the balance between conventional and counterinsurgent military strategy as it changed over time. It finds that, between 1965 and 1970, the commanders of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV), Generals William Westmoreland and Creighton Abrams, shared significant continuity of strategic and tactical thought. Both commanders tolerated U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Allied unobserved firepower at levels inappropriate for counterinsurgency and both reduced Army harassment and interdiction fire (H&I) as a response to increasing budgetary pressure. Before 1968, the Army expended nearly 40 percent of artillery ammunition as H&I – a form of unobserved fire that sought merely to hinder enemy movement and to lower enemy morale, rather than to inflict any appreciable enemy casualties. To save money, Westmoreland reduced H&I, or “interdiction” after a semantic name change in February 1968, to just over 29 percent of ammunition expended in July 1968, the first full month of Abrams’ command. Abrams likewise pursued dollar savings with his “Five-by-Five Plan” of August 1968 that reduced Army artillery interdiction expenditures to nearly ten percent of ammunition by January 1969. Yet Abrams allowed Army interdiction to stabilize near this level until early 1970, when recurring financial pressure prompted him to virtually eliminate the practice. Meanwhile, Marines fired H&I at historically high rates into the final months of 1970 and Australian “Harassing Fire” surpassed Army and Marine Corps totals during the same period. South Vietnamese artillery also fired high rates of H&I, but Filipino and Thai artillery eschewed H&I in quiet areas of operation and Republic of Korea [ROK] forces abandoned H&I in late 1968 as a direct response to MACV’s budgetary pressure. Financial pressure, rather than strategic change, drove MACV’s unobserved firepower reductions during the Vietnam War.
