In view of its inevitable implications at an individual and collective level, in all historic periods hospital building has represented the most advanced level of elaboration of architectural models aimed at the optimal synthesis of form, function and technique. Consequently, the typological and morphological reading of the Ospedale degli Infermi of Faenza, in the wake of a campaign of architectural surveys and archive research, represents an opportunity for verifying the relationship between technical culture and design and building practice through which it is possible to identify the typological and semantic values of the architecture. Designed and constructed by the master builders Raffaele and Giovanbattista Campidori in the middle of the eighteenth century, the various phases in the transformation of the Hospital are analysed down to our own times, positing tools and methods of investigation designed to optimise operations for the rehabilitation and conservation of the most ancient part of the building.

Shape and Thermodynamics is a two-day international Workshop focused on the Constructal Theory of generation of configuration in nature and engineering. From the early developments related to tree configurations for the cooling of electronics, today Constructal theory is being applied to conceptual design of transportation net-works, river basins, living bodies, building materials and many other flow systems. Constructal theory is also enriching thermo-dynamics, from basic theory to design and optimization. This theory approaches design "as science", with the generation of configuration regarded as a phenomenon of all physics, based on principle (the Constructal law). For example, Constructal Theory contributes to the evolution of fuel cells, in the design of cooling channels, the optimal feeding of reactants, etc. Important applications are also found in the design of heat exchangers, district heating networks, etc. The growing scientific literature on Constructal Theory has an important Italian component, although further dissemination is timely. The monograph presents the results of experimental and theoretical studies conducted using models of driven piles and tape dies. The influence of the cross-section size, length, shape of the trunk and the lower end of the piles on their submergability, energy intensity of driving and load-bearing capacity was evaluated. The design and technological features of new types of piles are considered. A method for determining the load-bearing capacity of a pile model based on the results of dynamic tests has been developed. Similarity conditions and formulas are presented that provide modeling of the pile driving process in the laboratory. The influence of the shape of the tape dies on their submersibility, energy consumption of the driving and the bearing capacity of the foundations arranged in the vyshtampovannyh pits was evaluated. The method of determining the load-bearing capacity of a belt Foundation model based on the results of pit vyshtampovyvaniya is described. Recommendations on the choice of optimal parameters of piles and foundations, arranged in vystupovani pits.
