Resumen
The aim of this study was to evaluate the productive potential, chemical composition, and fermentation profile of 24 genotypes of forage sorghum after ensiling. For this agronomic evaluation, a completely randomized block design with six replicates and twenty-four treatments was employed. Genotype 5 had the highest dry matter (DM) yield of 22.24 t/ha. The plant DM content ranged (p < 0.001) from 271.8 g/kg of fresh matter (FM) in genotype 9 to 330.0 g/kg FM in genotype 3, averaging 302.9 g/kg FM. The crude protein and non-fibrous carbohydrates differed significantly (p < 0.001) in the evaluated silages, with mean values of 61.0 and 275.3 g/kg DM, respectively. The pH of the sorghum silages also differed (p < 0.001), despite having an average of 3.94, with values ranging from 3.68 to 4.27. No changes were observed (p > 0.05) for the dry matter recovery of the sorghum genotype silages, which averaged at 853.9 g/kg FM. In the present study, genotype 5 resulted in being the most recommended genotype because it demonstrated a higher yield and higher nutritional value in both its fresh form and its ensiled form; had the lowest losses; and showed an ideal dry matter recovery after ensiling of 880 g/kg.

Resumen
Background: Three device-assisted deep endoscopic platforms presently exist and are available for clinical use: double-balloon enteroscopy, single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE), and spiral enteroscopy (SE). In a retrospective study, SE was associated with a greater depth of maximal insertion (DMI) with similar diagnostic yields and procedure time as compared with SBE. Aims: This was a prospective, randomized comparison of SE and SBE with respect to DMI, diagnostic yield, procedure time, and rate of adverse events. Methods: Patients were prospectively randomized to undergo either anterograde SE or SBE. Patient demographics, indication for procedure, DMI, procedure time, therapeutic procedure time, adverse event, diagnostic findings, and therapeutic interventions were prospectively recorded. The primary outcome was DMI. Secondary outcomes included: procedure time; diagnostic yield; therapeutic yield and adverse event rates. Results: During the study period, 30 patients underwent deep enteroscopy (SE 13, SBE 17). The most common indication was gastrointestinal bleeding in both groups. There was no significant difference in the DMI between SE and SBE (330.0 ± 88.2 cm vs 285.3 ± 80.8 cm, P = .16). There was no difference between SE and SBE in procedure time (37.0 ± 10.5 vs 38.3 ± 12.4, P = .76), diagnostic yield (SE = 9 [69%] vs SBE = 7 [41%], P = .16), or therapeutic yield (SE = 6 [46%] vs SBE = 4 [24%], P = .26). There were no major adverse events in either group. Conclusions: Spiral enteroscopy and SBE are similar with respect to DMI, diagnostic yield, therapeutic yield, procedure time, and rate of adverse events. Small numbers prevent giving a definitive judgment and future adequately powered prospective study is required to confirm these findings.

Abstract T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) predominantly in children > 5 years-old, which accounts for approximately 15% of pediatric ALL in age range. Recent studies demonstrated that an accumulation of chromosomal rearrangements and other genetic anomalies is necessary for T-ALL development. However causal factors and time latency for childhood T-ALL remains enigmatic. Unlike B-cell precursor ALL that involves genetic events prenatally or in early infancy, T-ALL early childhood have controversial results regarding prenatal origin. Therefore, we conducted a molecular screening in infants with T-ALL searching for the most common genetic markers associated with this malignancy. This series of cases was selected from the incident cases included in the Brazilian Collaborative Study for IAL. The diagnosis of T-ALL was made according to morphology and EGIL classification, followed by conventional karyotyping. Sixteen cases of T-ALL IL were analyzed either by PCR-RFLP (FLT3), RT-PCR (MLL, SIL/TAL1 and HOX11L2) or PCR-DHPLC (NOTCH1), tracing the genetic alterations commonly found in these genes. Mean age at diagnosis was 14.6 months (6–24), there was a predominance of high white blood cells (WBC) count, and a poor survival in this series of cases. Cytogenetic aberrations included del(12p) (#2), t(11;14) (#3), del(6)(q23) and del(7) (q32) (#11), and 49, XY,+6,+8,+19 (#15). Details of all molecular markers are presented in Table. Then molecular markers were identified in 8 out of 16 (50%) T-ALL cases. The observed markers included MLL rearrangements (n=2), FLT3-ITD (n=1), SIL/TAL1 (n=2), HOX11L2 (n=1), and NOTCH1 (n=4). SIL/TAL1 and NOTCH1 abnormalities were found concomitantly in one case (#7) in the diagnostic sample. By the fact that the onset of T-ALL arose in a short time latency from birth to diagnosis we suggested that T-ALL might originate prenatally in these cases. Table. Resumen
1. Single-unit electrical activity has been recorded from 34 dorsal horn neurons in the sacral segments (S1-2) of the spinal cord in halothane-anesthetized rats. All of the neurons had cutaneous receptive fields (RFs) on the rat's tail. The neurons were classified according to their responses to both innocuous and noxious mechanical stimulation of their RFs. Twenty-five cells were driven by both innocuous and noxious skin stimulation (multireceptive or class 2), and 9 neurons were driven only by noxious skin stimulation (nocireceptive or class 3). 2. The RF size, mechanical threshold, and afferent input properties of these neurons were determined in the intact anesthetized and spinalized states. Reversible spinalization was achieved by cooling the cervical spinal cord to 4 degrees C. 3. The class 2 neurons had a mean RF size of 919.8 +/- 112.0 (SE) mm2 in the intact animal. Fourteen of the 25 class 2 cells had larger RFs in the spinal state (mean increase = 330.0 mm2, SE = 79.2) and so were under tonic descending inhibition. Five neurons, all with C-fiber input, had smaller RFs (mean decrease = 247.6 mm2, SE = 136.6) and higher mechanical thresholds in the spinal state and so were under tonic descending excitation. Six neurons were unaffected by spinalization. 4. Five class 3 neurons recorded in the superficial dorsal horn had small RFs in the intact animal (mean = 201.0 mm2, SE = 48.8) and showed little or no change in RF size on spinalization (mean increase = 33.4 mm2, SE = 16.7), but their mechanical thresholds did decrease, indicating weak tonic descending inhibition. In contrast, four class 3 neurons recorded in the deep dorsal horn had larger RFs in the intact animal (mean = 566.8 mm2, SE = 156.8), and were under strong tonic descending inhibition, because they had much larger RFs (mean increase = 461.0 mm2, SE = 68.3), lower mechanical thresholds, and stronger C-fiber afferent input in the spinal state. 5. We conclude that the majority of nociceptive dorsal horn neurons are subject to a net tonic descending control of their RF properties. The class 2 neurons in the deep dorsal horn appear to be a heterogeneous population, some cells being under tonic descending excitation and others under tonic descending inhibition. Class 3 cells can be separated into those located in the superficial dorsal horn, whose RF properties show very little change on spinalization, and those in the deep dorsal horn, whose RF properties change markedly on spinalization.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
