The objective of the article is an approach to the controversial biography of Police Chief Manuel Brabo Portillo. The work is based on primary and secondary sources. The method used is empirical. In the imagery of the revolutionary syndicalist world, Brabo Portillo was the most hated policeman, the reincarnation of the murkiest face of the state. He was also a German spy connected with the sinking of Spanish ships, the murder of businessman and engineer Josep Barret and the first head of the terrorists linked to Barcelona employers. The conflict that affected Spain during the period of the First World War is fundamental in order to understand the origins of terrorism linked to pistolerismo, which marked Spanish social political history during the first third of the twentieth century.KEY WORDS: Brabo Portillo, pistolerismo, espionage, syndicalism, First World War. Resumen
Abstract Abstract 838 Eradication of minimal residual disease (MRD) during the first months of ALL treatment is associated with improved disease-free survival (DFS). We hypothesized that alemtuzumab, a humanized anti-CD52 monoclonal antibody, might be an effective, novel agent for eradication of MRD. In CALGB 10102, we tested dose escalation of alemtuzumab in sequential cohorts of CD52+ cases to a target dose of 30 mg administered SC 3 times/week for 4 weeks (12 doses) during post-remission therapy. Dose limiting toxicity (DLT) was defined as the inability to proceed with protocol treatment within 6 weeks after the last dose of alemtuzumab. Eligible patients (pts) had ≥10% lymphoblast CD52 expression at diagnosis determined in a CALGB reference laboratory. Antimicrobial prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Pneumocystis carinii was mandated. The 10102 therapy consisted of 6 monthly chemotherapy modules followed by maintenance therapy for a total of 2 years (Stock et al. ASH 2005, abstr 145); 299 untreated ALL pts were eligible and enrolled from 2003–2007. We previously reported (Lozanski et al. ASH 2007, abstr 2386) that 70% were CD52+ and eligible to receive Alemtuzumab (70% of B-cell ALL; 53% of T-cell ALL; 100% of Ph+ cases). Results: Twenty-four pts in remission (CR1) received Alemtuzumab as their fourth treatment module during the Phase I portion of the study. The median age was 37 years (18-77 years); 18 (80%) had B-cell ALL; 5 (19%) had T-cell ALL. 17/24 cases had evaluable cytogenetics after central review: 5 had favorable, 8 intermediate-risk, 2 poor-risk cytogenetics (neither were Ph+), and 2 were not classifiable (miscellaneous abnormalities). Non-hematologic toxicities were mild. SC alemtuzumab was well tolerated. Grade 3-4 myelosuppression was reported during 4 weeks of alemtuzumab treatment in 4 pts; 2 pts had Grade 3-4 lymphopenia. 4 pts had DLT: subsequent treatment was delayed in 2 due to transient CMV viremia; 1 developed Staph aureus empyema; and 1 had prolonged myelosuppression but did not receive G-CSF support as recommended by the protocol. 3 pts relapsed with ALL immediately following completion of the alemtuzumab module. Serial assessment of MRD using quantitative clone-specific PCR was possible in 11/24 cases. There was a median 1-log decrease in MRD during alemtuzumab therapy in the 20 and 30 mg cohorts. However, there was a 2-log rise during alemtuzumab therapy in one pt who relapsed 6 weeks later. Pharmacokinetic analysis revealed rising alemtuzumab serum levels during treatment in all dose cohorts, and levels were still detectable in some pts 10 weeks after completing alemtuzumab. During subsequent post-remission therapy, 8 pts developed CMV viremia, 2 had Herpes simplex infections, and 3 had Herpes zoster reactivation. There was not a significant correlation between serum alemtuzumab level and change in MRD or risk of viral infection. The median follow-up time for the 14 surviving pts is 51 months (49-54 months). Median DFS is 53 months (95% CI, 39 – not reached); median overall survival is 55 months (95% CI, 42- not reached). Conclusions: CD52 is expressed in the majority of adult ALL cases. Addition of alemtuzumab to front-line therapy is feasible and provides reduction in MRD, but is associated with viral infections. Dose escalation of alemtuzmab was not associated with DLT. Based on these results, the 30 mg dose of alemtuzumab was explored in an additional 70 patients in the Phase II portion of the study. The encouraging DFS results reported here require confirmation from longer follow-up of the larger Phase II cohort of patients. Disclosures: Stock: Genzyme: Research Funding. Resumen
Abstract Hepatic iron content is increased in patients with PCT and phlebotomy-induced iron depletion corrects the clinical and biochemical phenotype. Approximately 20 percent of patients with PCT are homozygous for mutations of the hemochromatosis gene (HFE) but the cause of iron overload in most patients is unknown. Hepatic URO-D activity is markedly reduced when PCT is manifest and URO-D activity improves following iron depletion. Most patients with PCT have no mutations of the URO-D gene (sporadic PCT) but approximately 1/3 of cases are heterozygous for URO-D mutations (familial PCT) (BLOOD. 2000; 95:1565–71). To determine the mechanism by which iron overload causes PCT we created 3 murine models: Mice with one null allele of Uro-d (Uro-d+/−) and 2 null Hfe alleles (Hfe−/ −) (PNAS.2001; 98:259–64); Uro-d+/− mice treated with iron-dextran, aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and; wild type mice treated with iron, ALA and PCB (J. Biochem. Mol. Toxicol.2001; 15:287–93). All models accumulate uroporphyrin in the liver and all have hepatic URO-D activity of 25% or less but Western blots revealed no change in URO-D protein. An iron deficient diet prevented the PCT phenotype in Uro-d+/−, Hfe−/ − animals and greatly attenuated the phenotype in animals treated with ALA and PCB (Env. Toxicol. Pharmacol.2005; 417–23). Liver homogenates from all porphyric models were heat denatured and clarified by centrifugation. The supernatants inhibited the activity of purified recombinant human URO-D (rhURO-D) by approximately 60%. The inhibitory activity was further purified by solid phase extraction and HPLC. The fraction containing the inhibitory activity did not fluoresce. Mass spectrometry of this fraction demonstrated a dominant peak with a mass of 835 Da and an absorption maximum of approximately 500 nM, the optical signature of a porphomethene. An inhibitor with identical properties was generated by partially oxidizing the uroporphyrinogen (837 Da) substrate of URO-D under UV light. Full oxidation of either the inhibitor purified from porphyric mouse liver or from partially oxidized, enzymatically generated uroporphyrinogen (either isomer I or III) yielded a compound with a mass of 831 Da and an absorption maximum of approximately 400 nM, indicating that the fully oxidized inhibitor was uroporphyrin. Tandem mass spectrometry of the 835 Da inhibitor indicated that the inhibitor was a tetrapyrrole. Collectively these data indicate that the inhibitor is a porphomethene derived form uroporphyrinogen through oxidation of a single bridge carbon between adjacent pyrrole rings. An inhibitor of rhURO-D was also identified in heat-denatured cytosol from liver biopsy samples obtained from four humans with PCT. We conclude that clinical expression of PCT requires an iron dependant oxidation reaction that generates a porphomethene inhibitor of URO-D.

Resumen
Introduction. Intussusception is a common abdominal emergency in infants and children. Ultrasonography and barium enema are very useful in diagnosis and treatment of this condition. The aim of the study was to assess the accuracy of ultrasound-guided saline enema for intussusception and to determine if some factors may improve the outcome of this technique. Material and methods. Intussusception was diagnosed in 63 patients at the Clinic of Pediatric Surgery in Novi Sad. The study period was divided into two 2-year phases: phase I, from 2001 through 2002, and phase II, from 2003 through 2004. During phase I, besides barium enema and fluoroscopy, we started using ultrasonography and ultrasound-guided hydrostatic saline enema in the diagnosis and reduction of intussusception. In phase II, this method of reduction was routinely used in all cases. Our technique of ultrasonic reduction was similar to the conventional hydrostatic barium reduction, except the reservoir was higher than that of barium, analgosedation ot patients was performed and in case of difficult and prolonged reduction, gentle manual pressure to the abdomen at right lower quadrant was used. Results. In phase I the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography in detecting intussusception was 53.8% , and 100% in phase II. The success rate of ultrasound-guided saline enema was 55.5% in phase I, and 83.8% in phase II. Only 6 patients (16.2%) underwent operative manual reduction of intussusception in phase II. There were no cases with bowel gangrene or perforations in both groups. Conclusions. Ultrasonography is a useful screening tool in the diagnosis of intussusception. The main advantage of hydrostatic reduction with ultrasound guidance is avoidance of ionizing radiation. The success rate of this method of reduction may be increased with an integrated team approach to the management and with modifications of the technique.

Resumen
LBA5000 Background: The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) has been found to be overexpressed in 55-98% of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer. This trial evaluated the efficacy of maintenance erlotinib, an EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor, after first-line chemotherapy. Methods: Eligible patients (pts) had high-risk FIGO stage I or stage II-IV epithelial ovarian, peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer and were not selected for EGFR expression. All patients underwent first line therapy (6-9 cycles of 3-weekly platinum-based chemotherapy (CT)) and showed no signs of progression at the end of CT. Patients were randomised to maintenance erlotinib 150 mg daily for 2 years or observation. Primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) by RECIST in combination with GCIG CA125 criteria. The final design provided 80% power to detect a PFS hazard ratio (HR) of 0.80 with 2-sided log-rank test at 5% after 632 events in 830 patients. Stratifications factors were stage, institution, age, response to and type of first-line CT. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and FISH for EGFR, and EGFR mutation analyses were performed in 330 patients. The study was registered as NCT00263822 and EudraCT number 2004-004333-34. Results: Between Oct 2005 and Feb 2008, 835 pts were randomised by 125 institutions from 10 countries. The most important baseline characteristics, PFS and OS are summarized in the table. Median follow-up was 51 months. 25% of the patients stopped erlotinib due to side effects (of these 67% due to rash). The predictive value of IHC and FISH for EGFR, and EGFR mutations are being evaluated and will be presented at the meeting. Conclusions: In the overall study populationmaintenance erlotinib after first-line treatment in ovarian cancer did not improve progression-free or overall survival. [Table: see text]

Resumen
Abstract Background IMU-838 (vidofludimus calcium) is a well-tolerated and orally available small molecule inhibitor of dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) and is currently in phase 2 clinical development for ulcerative colitis (UC). Here, we investigated the effect of IMU-838 on different immune cell subsets and analysed the mechanism of action in more detail in T cells. Methods The effect of IMU-838 on regulatory macrophages (Mregs) was investigated by adding IMU-838 or anti-TNFα antibodies (infliximab, adalimumab), alone or in combination, in a mixed lymphocyte reaction assay, determining Mregs (CD206+CD14+) by FACS analysis. To investigate the effect of IMU-838 on human T and B cells, PBMC were stimulated with PHA (48h) or Oligonucleotide 2006-PTO (70h), respectively. An affinity-dependent effect of IMU-838 was assessed on CD8 T cells from OT-I and OT-III mice, containing a high and a low affinity T cell receptor (TCR), respectively, for OVA257-264 peptide. These cells were stimulated with ovalbumin (OVA) peptide loaded splenocytes or anti-CD3/anti-CD28 for 3 days. Oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and glycolysis in murine T cells was investigated by the Seahorse/Agilent technique in murine CD4 and CD8 T cells activated with anti-CD3/anti-CD28 with or without IMU-838. Results IMU-838 slightly induced Mregs, but strongly and dose-dependently decreased TNFα and IL-6 secretion. Anti-TNFα antibodies alone strongly induced Mregs, but also increased IL-6 levels. When IMU-838 was added, Mregs induction was even higher, and IL-6 was reduced. Besides reducing proinflammatory cytokines secreted by macrophages, IMU-838 also inhibits proliferation of activated B and T cells, as well as inflammatory T cell cytokine secretion, IL-17A, IL-17F and IFNγ, and increased apoptosis up to 3-fold compared to vehicle control. By investigating IMU-838’s role on affinity related activity status of T cells, it was shown that IMU-838 strongly inhibited cell proliferation in the peptide stimulated high affinity, but not in the low affinity, CD8 T cells. Peptide stimulated high affinity T cells show an upregulation of OXPHOS and glycolysis pathways, which are involved in the generation of the cell’s energy supply, compared to low affinity cells. IMU-838 strongly inhibited OXPHOS and glycolysis in both CD4 and CD8 T cells. Conclusion IMU-838 reduces the proinflammatory immune cell response by inducing Mregs, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion and reducing immune cell proliferation. DHODH is only important in cells that received a strong stimulus and are highly metabolically active. Therefore, IMU-838 will only specifically target these cells and will still allow for a normal immune response, representing a huge safety advantage for treatment of IBD patients.

Resumen
“Candidatus phytoplasma asteris” and related strains (i.e., aster yellows group 16SrI) have been associated with diseases of numerous plant species worldwide. Symptoms of aster yellows (AY) have been reported on rapeseed/canola (Brassica napus and B. rapa) crops in Saskatchewan (SK) and Manitoba, Canada since 1953 (2). Symptoms generally include stunting, virescence, leaf yellowing or purpling, phyllody, and formation of bladder-like siliques. A total of 120 mature B. rapa cv. AC Sunbeam plants exhibiting AY symptoms were collected in commercial fields near Medstead, SK during 2003 and 2004 (one field per year). As described previously (4), total genomic DNA was extracted from leaf, stem, roots, and seeds collected from the 120 plants, from seeds from the seed lots sown in 2003 and 2004, and from leaf and stem tissue of 20 greenhouse-grown plants from each seed lot. The latter DNA samples were assayed for phytoplasma DNA by a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay incorporating phytoplasma universal 16S rRNA primer pairs P1/P6 (1) followed by R16R2/R16F2 (4). Seed samples analyzed from the 2003 and 2004 seed lots and tissues of the 40 greenhouse-grown plants all tested negative for phytoplasma DNA using this assay. Leaf, stem, and/or root tissues of all plants collected in the field in 2003 (60 plants) and 2004 (60 plants) and 71.1% (315 of 443) of seed samples (five seeds per sample) tested positive for the presence of phytoplasma DNA, as evidenced by the presence of an expected band of 1.2 kb on the gels after the second amplification with primers R16R2/R16F2. Nested PCR products from plant samples collected in 2003 were cloned, sequenced, and compared with phytoplasma sequences archived in the GenBank nucleotide database. On this basis, phytoplasmas detected in plants or their seeds collected in 2003 were found to be most similar (98.8%) to CHRY (Accession No. AY180956), a 16SrI-A subgroup strain, or were most similar (98.9%) to isolate 99UW89 (Accession no. AF268407), a known 16SrI-B subgroup strain. Sequences of phytoplasmas detected in plants or their seeds in 2004 were obtained by direct sequencing of rRNA products amplified from samples using PCR incorporating primer pairs P1/P6 and P4/P7 (3). Analysis of sequence data revealed that phytoplasmas in these plants were all most similar (99.5%) to AY-WB (Accession no. AY389828), a 16SrI-A subgroup member. The nucleotide sequences have been deposited with GenBank under Accession nos. DQ404346, DQ404347, and DQ411470. To our knowledge, this is the first report of 16SrI-A and 16SrI-B subgroup phytoplasmas infecting plants and seed of B. rapa in Saskatchewan. References: (1) I.-M. Lee et al. The seven books under review explore that process from different disciplinary standpoints, but chiefly as it affected England, the country that would become emblematic of commercial advancement and under whose sway the modern capitalist system emerged. How England managed this feat financially and commercially, politically and culturally, amidst the shifting opportunities and perils of these centuries is answered with an often impressive sophistication and imagination that take us well beyond hackneyed analyses prompted by the Weber–Tawney thesis.

Resumen
1. Wang N., Fan A. K. Resumen
In the case of winter wheat, the knowledge of several quality features is needed to be able to determine precisely the real quality of the givenwheat. Several systems have been worked out on the qualification of the winter wheat in Hungary and other countries as well. Evaluating thequality is being made more difficult because the different quality features take part in the development of the quality in different degrees andthe values of the several quality features are in different intervals and these data are different dimension values. On the evidence of theresults, in the case of considering several features,it can be difficult to rank into one concrete quality cathegory. Researchers are trying todevelop complex quality index numbers in order to be able to define the quality more precisely. One of these complex quality index numbersis Gyıri’s, so called, Z-index.In three years from 2006 and 2008, we examined the change of the quality features of nine varieties of winter wheat with the help of theZ-index under the influence of the effects of the different cropyears and the fertilizer treatment. The results show that the Z-index of theexamined varieties of winter wheat were influenced by several factors. Examining the data of the three different breeding years together wecan observe the corrective effect of the different cropyears on the Z-index, and if we examine the three years separately and together, thedifferences of the quality features of the different varieties differentiate very well, and with the help of the Z-index the comparison of thetypes is easier and perspicuous, and the Z-index represents the different nutrient reactions of the different types as well. On the average ofthe three years, the types gave the best results at N120-150+PK nutrient level. Among the nine varieties the best results were given by Mv Suba,GK Békés and Mv Mazurka in the case of both low and higher nutrient levels.

Resumen
This article aims to explain how the contestation of social spaces in the lives of the plural society at Lasem it processes dynamically. It is a pattern of space contestation that leads to the affirmation and strengthening of identity or a pattern that leads to the fusion of identities. As a consequence, the first pattern creates social friction or conflict. On the contrary, the second pattern is directed towards acculturation and assimilation of culture which can strengthen social harmony. The important finding of this research is that it can be known the real issue, so that problems related to all parties can be found a solution as well as a resolution. This research also proves that social mechanism preparedness is considered urgent to prevent negative excesses (negative things) from the space contestation. So the space contestation that occurs dynamically proves that the plural society in Lasem has found a valuable experience, namely social resilience in facing all possible emergence of social disintegration. Keywords: contestation, space, social mechanisms and an plural society REFERENCE: Abercrombie, Nicholas, at.all., 2010. Resumen
Purpose After National Cancer Institute of Canada trial MA.17 demonstrated benefits with letrozole after 5 years of tamoxifen, oncologists needed to identify and offer therapy to patients in community follow-up who were eligible for extended adjuvant hormone therapy. In British Columbia (BC), letters about extended letrozole therapy were sent to eligible BC women, their primary care physicians (PCPs), and their oncologists. We evaluated the effectiveness of this communication strategy. Patients and Methods Eight hundred eighty-five women with stage I-III breast cancer who completed 4 to 6 years of tamoxifen in 2004 with no documented recurrence were sent letters describing extended adjuvant letrozole in February 2005. Treatment uptake and characteristics for women who did or did not receive a subsequent letrozole prescription were described. Results Among 838 eligible women, 305 (36%) received a letrozole prescription before April 2006. More women in the letrozole cohort had tumors larger than 2.0 cm (44.2% v 30.8%); node-positive disease (52.5% v 22.5%); prior radiotherapy (71.1% v 58.5%); and prior chemotherapy (51.5% v 20.8%; all P ≤ .001). Among women younger than 70 years with node-positive disease, 65% received letrozole (122 of 188). Most prescribing physicians were oncologists (57.0%) or PCPs (30.8%). A significant increase in letrozole prescriptions was observed after the letter mail-out. Conclusion In this population-based setting, extended adjuvant letrozole was more common among younger women with higher risk disease and more prior therapy but underutilized overall. The reasons for extended therapy underutilization and the role of the letter mail-out strategy in informing breast cancer survivors of new available treatments in other health systems warrant further study.

Resumen
Abstract The purpose of this article was to review current literature on peri-operative pain management in hip arthroscopy. A systematic review of the literature on pain control in hip arthroscopy published January 2008 to December 2018 was performed. Inclusion criteria consisted of English language or articles with English translations, subjects undergoing hip arthroscopy with documented peri-operative pain control protocols in studies reporting Level I to IV evidence. Exclusion criteria were non-English articles, animal studies, prior systematic review or meta-analyses, studies not reporting peri-operative pain control protocols, studies documenting only pediatric (<18 years of age) patients, studies with Level V evidence and studies including less than five subjects. Statistical analysis was performed to assess pain protocols on narcotic consumption in PACU, VAS score on discharge, time to discharge from PACU and incidence of complications. Seventeen studies were included, comprising 1674 patients. Nerve blocks were administered in 50% of patients (n = 838 of 1674), of which 88% (n = 740 of 838) received a pre-operative block while 12% (n = 98 of 838) post-operative block. Sixty-eight complications were recorded: falls (54%, n = 37), peripheral neuritis (41%, n = 28), seizure (1.5%, n = 1), oxygen desaturation and nausea (1.5%, n = 1) and epidural spread resulting in urinary retention (1.5%, n = 1). No significant differences in narcotic consumption, VAS score at discharge, time until discharge or incidence of complication was found based on pain control modality utilized. No statistically significant difference in PACU narcotic utilization, VAS pain scores at discharge, time to discharge or incidence of complications was found between peri-operative pain regimens in hip arthroscopy.

Resumen
e19527 Background: The uncommon nature of SPTL has hampered its clinical characterization. The EORTC described 83 cases of SPTL across 8 centers and suggested a difference in prognosis between patients with alpha/beta (AB) SPTL, who were predominantly younger (median age 36 y) and those with gamma/delta (GD) SPTL, who had a median age of 59 years (1–Blood 2008; 111: 838–45). But regional differences in the frequency of SPLT have also been suggested, with its frequency >2x higher in North America than Europe (2–J Clin Oncol 2008 26: 4121–30). We hypothesized that there may be differences in the presentation between SPTL in Europe and North America. Methods: Analysis of the SEER 17 Nov 2007 (1973–2005) database was conducted with SEER Stat version 6.4.4 and GraphPad Prism 5. Cases of SPTL were defined by the ICD-O-3 code 9708. We also analyzed outcomes for patients < and ≥ 50y at diagnosis. Results: 64 patients were identified with SPTL. The median age was 53y (range 2–83); 28 were <50y and 36 were ≥50y. 19 (30%) patients were male, 45 were female; 44 (69%) patients were white, 13 were black and 7 were Asian. Stage was available on 27 patients: 16 (59%) were Stage I/II and 11 were stage III/IV. There was no difference in gender, ethnicity or stage distribution between those < 50 and ≥ 50. Information on B symptoms was available on 20 patients, 11 (55%) of whom had B symptoms. 5-year lymphoma specific survival was 51%; 5-year OS was 41%. Median OS for patients < 50 was 60 months compared to 12 months for patients ≥50 (G-B-W p=0.0183). Lymphoma specific survival was also significantly longer in the younger patients (G-B-W p=0.0015). Conclusions: In the SEER database, outcome of SPTL is strongly correlated with age. This result suggests a different biology between younger and older patients with SPTCL, possibly because the AB- subtype is more prevalent in younger patients, as reported by the EORTC. As well as differences in the overall frequency of SPTL (2), there may be geographic differences in the distribution of subtypes. [Table: see text] No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Resumen
Peddada et al. (Gene selected and clustering for time-course and close-response microarray experiments using order-restricted inference, Bioinformatics 19 (2003): 834–841) proposed a new method for selecting and clustering genes according to their time-course or dose-response profiles. Their method necessitates the assumption of a constant variance through time or among dosages. This homoscedasticity assumption is, however, seldom satisfied in practice. In this paper, via the application of Shi’s algorithms and a modified bootstrap procedure (N. Z. Shi, Maximum likelihood estimation of means and variances from normal populations under simulations order restrictions (J. Multivariate Anal. 50 (1994) 282–293), we proposed a generalized order-restricted inference method which releases the homoscedasticity restriction. Simulation results show that procedures considered in this paper as well as those by Peddada et al. (Gene selected and clustering for time-course and close-response microarray experiments using order-restricted inference, Bioinformatics 19 (2003) 834–841) are generally comparable in terms of Type I error rate while our proposed algorithms are usually more powerful.

Resumen
Sperm binding to the ZP is considered a carbohydrate- mediated process (Benoff 1997 Mol. Hum. Reprod. 3, 599–637, 827–837, 839–846). In bovine species, evidence that mannose could be a specific residue involved in bovine sperm-ZP binding has been reported (Amari et al. 2001 Mol. Reprod. Dev. 59, 221–226). Recently, Velasquez et al. (2006 Mol. Reprod. Dev. in press) showed that bovine sperm-ZP binding is mediated by α-2,3-linked sialic acid and that the use of a sialidase (neuraminidase) strongly decreased the sperm-ZP binding and fertilization. IVF with oocytes previously incubated with mannosidase or neuraminidase to compare the role played by mannose and sialic residues in the sperm-ZP binding and fertilization was performed. These specific glycosidase enzymes should remove mannose and sialic acid residues in the ZP. The in vitro-matured bovine oocytes were pre-incubated with the following: (i) mannosidase (1, 2, and 10 IU mL-1), (ii) neuraminidase (1 IU mL-1), and (iii) no enzyme (control group) in maturation medium (Edwards and Hansen 1996 Biol. Reprod. 55, 341–346) for 1 h. After the enzymatic treatment, the oocytes were rinsed 3 times in fresh fertilization medium and were inseminated in IVF-TALP with frozen bull semen processed by a Percoll gradient at a concentration of 1 105 cells mL-1. The oocytes were co-incubated with spermatozoa for 18–22 h at 38.5C in a 5% CO2 atmosphere. Then, the oocytes were washed in PBS twice and fixed in glutaraldehyde. The samples were stained with Hoechst 33342 solution and assessed under an epifluorescence microscope to determine the presence of sperm head in the cytoplasm or pronucleus formation. The data were presented as the mean penetration rate SEM, and the variables were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA (SPSS 11.0; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The results showed that neuraminidase treatment (1 IU mL-1) strongly decreased the penetration percentages from 62% (control group) to 32% (neuraminidase group). When the mannosidase treatment was used, the percentage of penetration was similar to that of the control for both the 1 IU mL-1 (66%) and the 2 IU mL-1 (55%) groups. In the group in which 10 IU mL-1 were used, the oocytes became degenerated, but a control experiment demonstrated that the degeneration was due to the enzyme excipient at that concentration. The neuraminadase results obtained are in accordance with the results obtained by Velasquez et al. (in press). However, mannosidase had no effect, although Amari et al. (2001) reported that mannose could be a specific residue involved in the bovine sperm-ZP binding. Tanghe et al. (2004 Mol. Reprod. Dev. 68, 492–499) showed that the p-aminophenyl derivative of d-mannose affects the sperm–oocyte fusion at the oolema level but not the number of spermatozoa bound to the zona pellucida. When they observed the effect of glycoproteins and carbohydrates on bovine oocyte penetration, sialic acid 10 mM caused 20% inhibition of penetration. According to our results and those previously reported (Tanghe et al. 2004; Velasquez et al. in press), we propose that the sialic acid is a main receptor at the bovine ZP level for bull spermatozoa. This study was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (AGL2006-03495 and BMC 2004-05568) and the Seneca Foundation of the Murcia Regional Government (03018/PI/05).

Resumen
Abstract Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is caused by a uroporphomethene (UPN) inhibitor of uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (Phillips, JD et al, Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2007 104(12):5079–84). In the absence of the inhibitor very little uroporphyrin (URO) is secreted in the urine and the excreted URO is predominantly the isomer-III (URO-III). In contrast, in patients with PCT and mice with experimental PCT the predominant porphyrin excreted in urine is uroporphyrin-I (URO-I). Direct measurements of uroporphyrinogen III synthase activity (UIIIS) in mice with PCT have shown no reduction in activity indicating that an alternate mechanism is responsible. We hypothesized that oxidation of a single bridge carbon of HMB, the product of the porphobilinogen deaminase reaction, is the initial event leading to the porphomethene. Our structural data indicate that oxidized HMB cannot serve as a substrate for UIIIS (Schubert, HL et al, Biochem J. 2008 47(33):8648–55) but can non-enzymatically cyclize to form UPN I. UPN I would then serve as the inhibitor of uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase but and then be fully oxidized to yield URO-I. To test this hypothesis we generated authentic UPN’s I and III. URO’s I and III were reduced with palladium on carbon to yield uroporphyrinogens (Uro’gen) I and III. UPN’s I and III were then generated by controlled photo-oxidation of the corresponding Uro’gens. We then utilized LC-MS to separate and characterize the synthesized UPN’s. Retention times of the two compounds differed by approximately 1 min (UPN III elutes prior to UPN I) but the profile of the daughter ions derived from the UPN’s (molecular mass 835 Da) was identical. The same approach was applied to clarified liver cytosol from mice with experimental PCT. The retention time of the 835 Da UPN identified in mouse liver cytosol corresponded to that of the synthesized UPN I and yielded identical daughter ions. These data support the hypothesis that oxidation of HMB leads to formation of UPN I in vivo. This is concordant with our view that UPN I serves both as the inhibitor of URO-D and as the source of the excess URO-I found in PCT.

Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) and Tomato infectious chlorosis virus (TICV) are emergent whitefly-transmitted criniviruses. ToCV and TICV were detected in Spain in 2000 (2) and 2001 (1), respectively. Both viruses infect tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) crops and cause symptoms of foliar chlorosis. ToCV is prevalent along the southern and eastern regions of Spain (provinces of Sevilla, Málaga, Almería, Murcia, Alicante, and Castellón), Balearic (Mallorca), and the Canary Islands (Tenerife and Gran Canaria). However, TICV only has been detected in the provinces of Murcia, Alicante, and Castellón in Spain. During the summer and autumn of 2002, abnormal interveinal reddening, yellowing symptoms, or both, were observed in plants of Chenopodium album L., C. murale L., and Solanum nigrum L. growing in or around tomato fields in Murcia and Almería provinces. To study the alternative hosts that may serve as virus reservoirs in areas where these viruses are prevalent, 62 samples of 42 common weed species were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction using specific primers for ToCV and TICV (1). The 439-bp ToCV-specific DNA fragment was amplified in two S. nigrum samples from Alicante and Murcia provinces, and the 501-bp TICV-specific DNA fragment was amplified in one C. murale sample from Murcia, as well as in three C. album samples from Murcia and Alicante provinces. The DNA fragment amplified from the ToCV isolate was sequenced and showed 99 to 98% identity with the ToCV isolates (GenBank Accession Nos. AY048854 and AF234029) from Italy and Portugal, respectively. The DNA fragment amplified from TICV isolates were sequenced and showed 98% identity with the TICV isolate from Spain (GenBank Accession No. AF479662), confirming the diagnosis. Although the number of samples is not sufficient to conclude that we know, in a precise way, the role of weed reservoirs in TICV and ToCV epidemics in Spain, this study might contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of these viruses. To our knowledge this is the first report of these weeds as natural hosts of ToCV and TICV in Spain. References: (1) M. I. Font et al. Plant Dis. 86:696, 2002.
John Henry Newman (1801-1890). Universidade. Ensino de filosofia. Abstract: Authoring a comprehensive philosophical oeuvre, Alasdair MacIntyre manifests a profound interest on the subject of education, having produced in particular a serious reflection on the theme of the university. His conception of a university is strongly influenced by that of John Henry Newman in the 19th century, and is intimately related, as much as with Newman’s, to his understanding of philosophy. Beginning with such a conception, it is possible to systematically meditate on the matter of the teaching of philosophy, within the university walls as well as at its general cultural and social boundaries, including a particular focus on Brazilian reality. Resumen
For many years phytoplasma diseases have caused serious losses in most of the major grape-growing regions of the world, except South Africa, where a mixed phytoplasma infection was first reported in 2006 (1). During the early growing season of 2006, symptoms consistent with phytoplasma disease were observed in vineyards in the Olifants River Valley. Symptoms included yellowing of leaves, incomplete lignification of shoots, shortening of internodes, and the abortion of growth tips and immature bunches. Symptomatic shoots and leaves from grapevine cultivars (Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ruby Cabernet, Pinotage, Corinth, Chardonnay, Columbar, Chenin blanc, Sauvignon blanc, Sultana, and Regal) were collected during the early growing season (November) of 2006, 2007, and 2008. Total DNA was extracted from 32 of these samples (from single plants in the same vineyards over the 3 years) with the Invisorb Spin Plant Mini Kit (Invitek, Berlin, Germany) and tested by nested PCR using two universal primer pairs, P1/P7 and R16F2n/R16R2 (3). The first round of PCR of the 2006 samples yielded 1.8-kb fragments for 17 of the samples, while the nested PCR yielded an additional seven positive samples, confirming the necessity of nested PCR for reliable diagnosis. A similar trend was observed in the 2007 and 2008 PCR test results. All asymptomatic plants, which were included as negative controls, and water controls were negative by nested PCR. Twenty-four 1,245-bp amplicons, generated by nested PCR, were excised from gels, purified with a NucleoSpin Extract II Kit (Macherey-Nagel, Düren, Germany) and directly sequenced. Sequence data was compiled with the BioEdit Version 7.0.4.1 sequence alignment editor software (2), aligned using ClustalW Version 1.4 (4), and a consensus sequence was generated (GenBank Accession No. GQ365729). A BLAST search of the NCBI GenBank database using the individual sequences revealed high sequence identities (≥99%) with the aster yellows phytoplasma group (16SrI) and specifically with the subgroup 16SrI-B. In a comparison of the sequences of the 1.2-kb PCR fragments of 24 local samples with each other, sequence identities of ~99% were observed. These results clearly illustrate that all vines screened were infected with the same phytoplasma. Single nucleotide differences observed between different isolates may indicate the presence of closely related sequence variants of this phytoplasma. Aster yellows occurs worldwide and has been reported to infect grapevine–South Africa can now be added to this list. During the three seasons of our study, the area in which symptomatic vineyards were observed increased significantly, indicating spread by a biological vector. Moreover, infected vineyards were noticed in two other South African grape-growing regions. In contrast to the previous report, which reported a mixed infection of phytoplasmas of groups 16SrXII-A and 16SrII-B (1), PCR screening and sequencing of more than 40 individual samples from these areas confirmed these all to be infected with aster yellows phytoplasma only. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the detection and identification of an aster yellows phytoplasma causing grapevine yellows disease in South Africa. References: (1) S. Botti and A. Resumen
A study on the adsorption characteristic of Iron onto Poly[eugenol-co-(divinyl benzene)] (EDVB) from aqueous solution has been conducted. EDVB was produced and characterized by using FTIR spectroscopy. The adsorption was studied by a batch method by considering the factors affecting the adsorption such as initial metal ion concentration, adsorption selectivity, and mechanism of adsorption using a sequential desorption method. The adsorption of Iron onto EDVB followed a pseudo-2 order kinetics model with the rate constant of 0,144 L2 mmol-1 min-1. The adsorption isotherm was studied with Tempkin, Langmuir and Freundlich models. The adsorption capacity (Qmax) obtained by Langmuir isotherms was 250mg.L-1 while the equilibrium value was 0.8 Lmg-1. A competitive adsorption study showed that EDVB is adsorbed selectively towards Iron rather than Chromium, Coppers and Cadmium ions. The interaction type of Iron onto EDVB was determined by a sequential desorption. Keywords: Polyeugenol; divinyl benzene (DVB); adsorption; Iron; FeReferencesAbasi, C. Y.; Abia, A.A.; Igwe, J.C. Resumen
SUMMARY Since 1971, the CDC, EPA, and Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) have maintained the collaborative national Waterborne Disease and Outbreak Surveillance System (WBDOSS) to document waterborne disease outbreaks (WBDOs) reported by local, state, and territorial health departments. WBDOs were recently reclassified to better characterize water system deficiencies and risk factors; data were analyzed for trends in outbreak occurrence, etiologies, and deficiencies during 1971 to 2006. A total of 833 WBDOs, 577,991 cases of illness, and 106 deaths were reported during 1971 to 2006. Trends of public health significance include (i) a decrease in the number of reported outbreaks over time and in the annual proportion of outbreaks reported in public water systems, (ii) an increase in the annual proportion of outbreaks reported in individual water systems and in the proportion of outbreaks associated with premise plumbing deficiencies in public water systems, (iii) no change in the annual proportion of outbreaks associated with distribution system deficiencies or the use of untreated and improperly treated groundwater in public water systems, and (iv) the increasing importance of Legionella since its inclusion in WBDOSS in 2001. Data from WBDOSS have helped inform public health and regulatory responses. Additional resources for waterborne disease surveillance and outbreak detection are essential to improve our ability to monitor, detect, and prevent waterborne disease in the United States.

Resumen
BACKGROUND: Understanding the dynamics and regional features of primary disability formation is crucial for developing organizational and managerial measures to improve the provision of medical care and the system of rehabilitation measures to reduce the level of disability in the population. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the state and dynamics of primary disability due to ophthalmopathology in the adult population of the Krasnoyarsk Region from 2007 to 2021. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data sources include forms № 7-SOBES (Information on the medical and social examination of persons aged 18 years and older), statistical collections of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Medical and Social Expertise of the Ministry of Labor of Russia, and reporting documents of the Main Bureau of Medical and Social Expertise in Krasnoyarsk territory from 2007 to 2021. The comparative characteristics of the analyzed data were carried out for three periods: 2007–2011, 2012–2016, and 2017–2021. RESULTS: For 2007–2021, 5,708 people were recognized as disabled for the first time due to the pathology of the eye. The dynamics of primary disability was characterized by unevenness. The values of the intensive indicator of primary disability ranged from 1.7 to 2.6 (mean 1.9) per 10,000 population aged 18 and above. Among those initially recognized as disabled, individuals at retirement age prevailed with an increased instance of 8.5% every subsequent five years. People with disabilities were mainly residents of the cities in the region. Compared with 2007–2011 and 2012–2016 in the last 5 years, the share of IDPs in groups I and II increased (27.1% [524/1,930] and 43.4% [837/1930]), while the proportion people with disabilities of group III decreased (29.5% [569/1930]). The leading cause of disability was glaucoma (32.0% [606/1,891], 30.1% [569/1,887], and 31.1% [599/1,930] in groups I, II, and III, respectively). Second place in the list is occupied by age-related macular degeneration (15.7% [298/1,891], 20.3% [383/1,887], and 27% [522/1,930] in groups I, II, and III, respectively), and the third is myopia (14.1% [268/1,891], 11.2% [211/1,887], and 11.9% [231/1,930] in groups I, II, and III, respectively). CONCLUSION: The dynamics of primary disability due to eye pathology in the adult population of the Krasnoyarsk Territory in 2007–2021 are variable, partly associated with an increase in the number of people with disabilities of retirement age. There was an increase in disability groups during 2017–2021. Therefore, improving the efficiency of preventive medicine and providing the region with medical personnel can help reduce the level of primary disability in the region.

Resumen
We explored the sustainable business practices of selected Philippine corporations that promote the quest for peace. We used three key indicators of sustainable business practices, namely, fostering economic development, espousing corporate citizenship, and respecting the rule of law, as our variables to measure our sustainable business practices construct. On the other hand, we adopted sustainable development and sound business environmental our variables to measure the quest for peace construct. We assumed that sustainable business practices and quest for peace are interlinked and mutually reinforcing. We anchored our study on the Theories of Positive Peace, Sustainable Development, and Humanistic Management. We used the qualitative exploratory research design and the holistic multiple case study research strategy. We used the qualitative exploratory research design and the holistic multiple case study research strategy. We selected through the non-probability purposive sampling technique, the 20 Publicly - Listed Companies in the Philippines. We then, utilized the monomethod as the data collection technique for selecting the Sustainability Reports published in 2018 and uploaded in the websites of the respective corporations. With this deductive approach, we specifically adopted the pattern matching analytical procedure in the process of our content analysis of information from the Sustainability Reports. Results on fostering economic development revealed numerous jobs created, training and development, as well as trade and business development programs and activities executed. Analysis on espousing corporate citizenship disclosed many programs and activities related to encourage the use of voice from the firm, community engagement, and governance implemented. Findings on respecting the rule of law showed also various programs and activities that cover compliance with Philippine laws, international laws, and environmental standards. Findings also indicated that the nexus of sustainable business practices and the quest for peace aims to build companies of enduring greatness by doing good and working toward a sustainable future. In conducting responsible business, they were able to help in attaining positive peace in our coun try, which, in return, is essential for sustainable development, as manifested by their significant contribution in achieving sustainable development/growth, working closely with regulators to achieve shared goals; and protecting the environment and preserving natural resources. We recommend that there should be a coordinated effort of all the stakeholders to ensure that there is an integrated and holistic approach in the sustainability of the business sector to promote positive peace. We also propose to undertake further research on employing quantitative approach by using business, financial, and socio-economic indicators to address the limitations of this study. Resumen
Objective: To determine the frequency of common bile duct (CBD) injury in laparoscopic cholecystectomy in our settings, in my last 500 cases, after going through the learning curve associated CBD injuries. Design: Descriptive study. Place and Duration of Study: Surgical Unit-I, Rawalpindi General Hospital and the author’s Surgical Clinics from January 2003 to December 2008. Patients and Methods: Five hundred patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy by the same surgeon were included. The important variables included demographic data, intra operative time and findings, frequency of CBD injury and post operative hospital stay. Results: There were 419(83.8%) females and 81(16.2%) males with mean age 45.04±11.03 years. 294(58.8% )patients had chronic cholecystitis with Cholelithiasis and were admitted through Out Patient Department whereas 206(41.2%) were admitted through Accident and Emergency Department with acutecholecystitis. Abdominal ultrasound showed multiple calculi in 351(70.2%) patients and 149(29.8%) patients had single calculus preoperatively. Empyema was found in 97(19.4%) cases whereas adhesions were present in 182( 36.4%) patients. In our study frequency of CBD injury was 1%. Mean operating time was 35 minutes. 96.8 % of the patients were discharged within 48 hrs of operation. Conclusion: LaparoscopicCholecystectomy in our set up proved to be a safe procedure, having frequency of CBD injury of only 1% and a short hospital stay 493(96.8% )being discharged in less than 2 days.

Syafutra R, Adi W, Iqbal M, Yustian I. 2018. Short communication: Dugong dugon Müller, 1776 (Sirenia, Dugongidae) in Bangka Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 19: 823-830. Dugong dugon is a marine mammal species classified as Vulnerable. It has distribution in Indonesia, especially in Bangka Island. However, only four records of dugong were reported in Bangka Island in 1976, 2006, and 2007. In addition, there is little published information about local beliefs toward dugong and awareness actions toward dugong conservation in Bangka Island. This research compiled new records of dugong, local beliefs toward dugong, and awareness actions toward dugong conservation in Bangka Island. Sixteen new records of dugong were collected in Bangka Island leading to a total of 18 records for this island. All new records of dugong were obtained entirely from the eastern waters of Bangka Island. The new records also informed that most of the dugongs were found dead and entangled in gill nets. In addition, an interesting local belief caused Kurau Village becomes the most important location for fishermen to sell dead dugongs or dugongs’ meat. Furthermore, three main awareness actions toward dugong had been implemented in Bangka Island in 2017.

Resumen
Rocheteau, Rupert, and Wright [Scandinavian Journal of Economics 109 (2007), 837–855] show that the relationship between inflation and unemployment can be positive or negative, depending on the primitives of the model. The key features are indivisible labor, nonseparable preferences, and bargaining. Their results are derived only for a special case of bargaining, take-it-or-leave-it offer by buyers. Instead of bargaining, this paper considers competitive search. I show that the results of Rocheteau et al. can be generalized to an environment where both buyers and sellers have nonseparable preferences. In addition, the relationship between inflation and unemployment is robust to allowing free entry by sellers, which cannot be studied in Rocheteau et al. (2007).

Abstract This paper studies the influence of regional inequality within countries on internal conflicts. Regional inequalities are measured by the population-weighted coefficient of variation of regional GDP per capita. As the main innovation, I use a panel dataset of country-level regional inequalities, which covers 56 countries (835 subnational regions) between 1980 and 2009. I also consider a broader cross section dataset for the year 2005, which covers 110 countries (1569 subnational regions). Conflict is measured by the incidence of civil war (UCDP/PRIO data) and a risk measure of internal conflict (war, terrorism and riots) provided by the PRS Group’s International Country Risk Guide. Logit estimations are employed as well as OLS fixed effects panel regressions. I find that regional inequalities increase the risk of internal conflict.

Resumen
e16068 Background: Use of TKIs is standard of care for metastatic ccRCC and cytoreductive nephrectomy has improved survival even in metastatic ccRCC. The use of cytoreductive nephrectomy in the TKI era post-2005 for nccRCC histologies is unknown. We sought to determine trends and explore differences in characteristics of ccRCC and nccRCC, use of cytoreductive nephrectomy and survival outcomes for varying stages. Methods: Using a de-identified dataset acquired from the NCDB from 2004 to 2014, extraction of demographic information on patients divided into ccRCC versus nccRCC. Descriptive statistics was used for summarizing patients’ characteristics. Chi-Square test was used for comparing categorical variables. Two-sample t-test was used for comparing continuous variables. Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze patients’ survival data. Results: 302,339 (82%) ccRCC and 66,530 (18%) nccRCC patients were identified. nccRCC included papillary (n = 42,251), sarcomatoid (n = 5769), chromophobe (n = 17,671) and collecting duct (n = 839). The median age for both groups was 63 years, more common in males (ccRCC = 61%; nccRCC = 69%), and mostly Caucasians (ccRCC = 86%; nccRCC = 75%). Most patients were treated in comprehensive community and academic research programs (ccRCC = 81%; nccRCC = 83%). Majority of patients were diagnosed with AJCC Stage I (ccRCC = 57%, nccRCC = 62%). Stage IV was diagnosed in 14% of ccRCC and 9% of nccRCC. The utilization of nephrectomy declined for ccRCC at 36% in the year 2014 compared to 44% in 2005, whereas it declined more for nccRCC with 47% in 2014 compared to 70% in 2005. The median survival time for Stage I was comparable in both groups (ccRCC = 140 mos, 95% CI 138.8 – 142.16; nccRCC = 140 mos, 95% CI 138 – unestimable). However, median survival was worse for stage IV in nccRCC (ccRCC = 9 mos; 95% CI 8.8 – 9.17; nccRCC = 7.43 mos; 95% CI 7.16 – 7.79). Conclusions: In stage IV patients with nccRCC, cytoreductive nephrectomy is used less often and overall survival appears inferior compared to ccRCC.

Resumen
CRA506 Background: The Dutch MIRROR study is the largest cohort study on pN1mi and pN0(i+) in the SN era with long-term follow-up, central pathology review (6th AJCC-classification), and separate analyses on the use of adjuvant systemic therapy (AST). In patients not receiving AST, pN1mi and pN0(i+) as final N-stage were shown to be independent prognosticators for disease-free survival (SABCS 2008, #23, oral). As a substantial number of patients in the MIRROR study did not undergo cALND or ax RT, we questioned whether this policy was safe in patients with pN1mi(sn) or pN0(i+)(sn). Methods: Patients operated for breast cancer in all Dutch hospitals in the years 1998–2005, having favorable primary tumor characteristics, and having undergone an SN biopsy without macrometastases as final N-stage were included. For this present research question, patients were categorized by their SN-stage. Median follow-up was 4.7 years. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate 5-year axillary recurrence (AR) rates, and Cox regression was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HR). In the analyses, the effect of AST was taken into account. Results: In total, 835 patients with pN0(i-)(sn), 799 patients with pN0(i+)(sn), and 958 patients with pN1mi(sn) were included. AR rates, and HRs on AR are displayed below. Conclusions: Omission of cALND or ax RT in patients with pN1mi(sn) resulted in a significantly higher 5-year AR rate, even after correction for AST, and other patient and tumor characteristics. This indicates that patients with pN1mi(sn) should undergo cALND or ax RT to prevent AR. Support: The Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) and the Dutch Breast Cancer Trialists’ Group (BOOG). Resumen
The Lower Gangetic Basin is one of the most highly populated areas of India, covering an area of 286,899 km2 with a population density of 720 persons per km2. 64 % of the area is covered under agriculture which is supported by the highly fertile alluvial soil. Landuse and landcover (LULC) changes due to an ever increasing human population, natural disasters induced by climate change can alter agricultural productivity which in turn can affect the food security of the region. The current study found out the change in LULC over a span of 20 years (1985–2005), and identified the factors driving this change. LULC data was generated from geo-corrected satellite data of LANDSAT-MSS, IRS LISS-I and IRS LISS-III for pre monsoon and post monsoon seasons for the years 1985–86, 1994–95 and 2004–05 respectively, using onscreen visual interpretation at 1 : 250,000 scale. We used cross-tabulation matrix to investigate landuse and landcover transformation. The most significant transformation has been to built-up category, contributed by agricultural land (515 km2) and scrubland (53 km2). The other notable transformations are from agriculture to plantation (247 km2), fallow to scrubland (838 km2) and from water body to scrubland (407 km2). We generated change no-change matrix and analyzed it using logistic regression to investigate the drivers of LULC change. We identified availability of water for irrigation, literacy, sexratio and the availability of different sources of livelihoods, as the major drivers of LULC change in the Lower Gangetic Basin.

Resumen
Background: The 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer/Union for International Cancer Control (AJCC/UICC) tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system was released with major revisions. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate differences between the 7th and 8th editions of the AJCC/UICC TNM staging system and to compare the predictability of prognosis between the two staging systems with patients who underwent thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) at a single institution. Methods: A total of 3238 patients underwent thyroid operation from January 2002 to December 2006 at Yonsei University Hospital (Seoul, Korea), of which 2294 with complete clinical data and sustained follow up were enrolled. Clinicopathologic features and TNM staging by applying the 7th and 8th editions of the AJCC/UICC were analyzed retrospectively by the complete review of medical charts and pathology reports of patients. Mean follow-up duration was 132.9 ± 27.9 months. Results: A significant number of T3 patients were downstaged to T1 (838, 36.5%) and T2 (122, 5.3%). After applying the 8th edition of the AJCC/UICC TNM staging system, the number of stage I patients increased significantly from 1434 (62.5%) to 2058 (89.7%), whereas numbers of stage III and IV patients decreased significantly from 644 (28.1%) to 33 (1.4%) and from 199 (8.7%) to 17 (0.7%), respectively. According to Kaplan–Meier survival analyses and values of the Harrell’s c-index and integrated area under the curve (iAUC), the 8th edition has significantly better predictive performance for disease-free survival (DFS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) than the 7th edition. Conclusions: A significant population was downstaged after applying the 8th edition of the AJCC/UICC TNM staging system, and the 8th edition provided significantly better accuracy in predicting DFS and DSS in patients with DTC.

Resumen
AbstractObjectiveTo examine the association between overweight and obesity and serum ferritin among women of reproductive age (15–49 years) in Nicaragua, considering the effect of α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), a marker of inflammation.DesignWe analysed data from the 2004–05 Nicaraguan Integrated Surveillance System for Nutrition Interventions. Three logistic regression models were analysed with low serum ferritin (<15 μg/l) as the dependent variable: (i) overweight or obese status and covariates; (ii) model 1 plus AGP; and (iii) model 1 restricted to only women with normal AGP levels (≤1·0 g/l).SettingNicaragua.SubjectsIncluded in this analysis were 832 non-pregnant mother/caregivers (15–49 years) surveyed in 2004–2005.ResultsIn the sample, prevalence of overweight and obesity was 31·8 % and 19·2 %, respectively, and 27·6 % had low serum ferritin. In model 1, the adjusted OR of low serum ferritin was 0·74 (95 % CI 0·52, 1·05) for overweight women and 0·42 (95 % CI 0·26, 0·65) for obese women. In model 2, AGP was significantly independently associated with low serum ferritin (adjusted OR=0·56, 95 % CI 0·34, 0·92) while the adjusted OR for overweight and obesity were largely unchanged. Excluding women with elevated AGP did not appreciably affect the relationship between overweight or obesity and low serum ferritin (model 3).ConclusionsOverall, in this population of reproductive-age women, obese women were less likely to have low serum ferritin levels, and this was independent of inflammation as measured by AGP.

Resumen
522 Background: Neo-tAnGo used a 2-by-2 factorial design, addressing: (i) gemcitabine (G) in a sequential neoadjuvant chemotherapy (CT) regimen of epirubicin/cyclophosphamide (EC) and paclitaxel (T); and (ii) the sequencing of these treatment components (EC then T ± G versus T ± G then EC). Methods: Patients (Pts) with early breast cancer (T2 tumours or above) were randomised to EC then T, T then EC, EC then TG or TG then EC. All components were given x 4 cycles. (E= 90 mg/m2 day (d)1 every (q) 21d; C = 600 mg/m2 d1 q21d; T = 175 mg/m2 d1 q14d; G = 2,000 mg/m2 d1 q14d.) The primary endpoint was pCR, defined as absence of invasive disease in the breast and axillary lymph nodes. 800 pts were required to detect 10% differences in the primary endpoint pCR rates, at the 5% (2-sided) significance level with 85% power. Stratification was by age, inflammatory/locally advanced disease, tumour size, clinical involvement of axillary nodes and oestrogen receptor (ER) status. Results: Between January 2005 and September 2007, 831 pts were randomised by 88 consultants from 57 UK centres. Characteristics were balanced across groups: 63% <50 years old, 25% had inflammatory and/or locally advanced disease, 79% of tumours <50 mm, 50% node positive and 34% ER negative. Two-reader review of 813 (98%) eligible pts'. pathology reports, blinded to treatment arm, were carried out. pCR rates were 17% (95% CI 14–21) for EC&T pts and 17% (95% CI 14–21) for EC&TG pts (p = 0.98). However the sequence T±G then EC, showed pCR of 20% (95% CI 16–24) compared with 15% (95% CI 11–18) for EC then T±G pts (p = 0.03). Adjustment by stratification did not alter results. Conclusions: The Neo-tAnGo results confirm those of the adjuvant tAnGo trial in terms of gemcitabine effect (ASCO 2008). The sequence of T±G-first has demonstrated a significant advantage in pCR compared with the more conventional anthracycline-first sequencing. [Table: see text]

Periodo: Principado (27 a. C. – 284 d. C.) ABSTRACTThe Roman institution of the domicilium turns the subject into a resident. It usually designates the place of prolonged residence of the incola or inhabitant who has emigrated to a community, as opposed to the municeps. Therefore, it is a legal link between the city and the person who emigrates there. As opposed to the expression of the origo in epigraphic texts, which is very common, the manifestation of the domicile occurs only exceptionally, in view of the scant number of surviving references, and its enunciation is very similar to that which indicates provenance. Resumen
In this paper, I calculate the semiparametric information bound in two dynamic panel data logit models with individual specific effects. In such a model without any other regressors, it is well known that the conditional maximum likelihood estimator yields a √n-consistent estimator. In the case where the model includes strictly exogenous continuous regressors, Honoré and Kyriazidou (2000, Econometrica 68, 839–874) suggest a consistent estimator whose rate of convergence is slower than √n. Information bounds calculated in this paper suggest that the conditional maximum likelihood estimator is not efficient for models without any other regressor and that √n-consistent estimation is infeasible in more general models.
