Resumen

Based on the newly established synonymy of the type species (i.e., Menederopsis constrictus Koch, 1954 = Archinamaqua lyleae Schawaller, 2012 syn. nov.) the genus-group name Archinamaqua Schawaller, 2012 (Pimeliinae: Tentyriini) is interpreted as a junior synonym of Menederopsis Koch, 1954 (Tenebrioninae: Eurynotina). This newly interpreted taxon has a restricted distributional area on sand dunes in Namaqualand, western South Africa.

Die im tropischen Afrika verbreitete Gattung Agachila Drake & Gomez-Menor, 1954, der Heteropterenfamilie der Tingidae, wurde revidiert. Drei der Arten sind Neubeschreibungen: Agachila barbarae, A. constanti und A. heinrichae. Die Art Agachila biafrana Drake & Gomez-Menor, 1954, erwies sich als ein Synonym zu Agachila motoensis (Schouteden, 1953). - Die Gattung Agachila und ihre insgesamt neun Arten werden charakterisiert. Fast alle Arten stammen aus den tropischen Gebieten Afrikas, nur eine Art wurde in der Republik Südafrika festgestellt. Resumen

The genus Microlithosia Daniel, 1954 is a member of the subtribe Lithosiina, tribe Lithosiini of the subfamily Arctiinae and family Erebidae. It was described as a monotypic genus for its type species, M. shaowuica Daniel, 1954 from SE China (Fujian, Shaowu).Recently, the genus was reviewed by Dubatolov & Kishida (2012) with the inclusion of four species: M. shaowuica Daniel,1954 (from its type locality, and additionally from South Central China (Hunan)), M. nanlingica Dubatolov, Kishida & Wang, 2012 from South-East China (Guangdong), M. umbripuncta (de Joannis 1928) from North Vietnam and Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chanthaburi, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Kanchanaburi, Chumphon, Phitsanulok), and M. decreta (Butler 1877) from Borneo and Thailand (Nakhon Ratchasima). Later on, Bucsek (2012, 2014) described two new species, M. pseudodecreta Bucsek, 2012 and M. johara Bucsek, 2014 both from Peninsular Malaysia. Kirti and Singh (2016) subsequently added a further species, M. champhaiensis Singh & Kirti, from India (Mizoram, Champhai). So at present, Microlithosia comprises seven species, with single from India.

Resumen

Abstract. We present a long-term series of surface solar radiation (SSR) from the city of Athens, Greece. SSR measurements were performed from 1954 to 2012, and before that (1900–1953) sunshine duration (SD) records were used in order to reconstruct monthly SSR. Analysis of the whole data set (1900–2012) mainly showed very small (0.02 %) changes in SSR from 1900 to 1953, including a maximum decrease of −2.9 % decade−1 in SSR during the 1910 to 1940 period, assuming a linear change. For the dimming period 1955–1980, −2 % decade−1 was observed that matches various European long-term SSR-measurement-related studies. This percentage in Athens is in the lower limit, compared to other studies in the Mediterranean area. For the brightening period 1980–2012 we calculated +1.5 % decade−1, which is also in the lower limit of the reported positive changes in SSR around Europe. Comparing the 30-year periods 1954–1983 and 1983–2012, we found a difference of 4.5 %. However, measurements of the first 30-year period are associated with higher uncertainties than those of the second period, especially when looking at year-to-year changes. The difference between the two periods was observed for all seasons except winter. Analyzing SSR calculations of all-sky and clear-sky (cloudless) conditions/days, we report that most of the observed changes in SSR after 1954 can be attributed partly to cloudiness and mostly to aerosol load changes.

Resumen

The small-sized genus Haroldius Boucomont, 1914 consists of 38 known species widely distributed in the Old World including South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Africa (Pereira 1954; Krikken & Huijbregts 2006; Král & Hájek 2012). Members of this genus are probably saprophagous or mycophagous (Scheuern 1995) and so far were collected by light traps, sifted from leaf litter or soil and captured by flight interception traps (Paulian 1939; Paulian & Scheuern 1994; Krikken & Huijbregts 2006). Some researches suggested that they could have precise ecological relationship with ants. Their myrmecophily habit was indicated mainly by the special morphological characters including smooth body and the characteristically broadened and flattened tibiae (Pereira 1954; Krell & Philips 2010). However, their biology are still rarely reported, and the larvae are still unknown (Pereira 1954; Krikken & Huijbregts 2006).

Abstract. Forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) cycle, and the South Korean forests also contribute to this global C cycle. While the South Korean forest ecosystem was almost completely destroyed by exploitation and the Korean War, it has successfully recovered because of national-scale reforestation programs since 1973. There have been several studies on the estimation of C stocks and balances in the South Korean forests over the past decades. However, a retrospective long-term study including biomass and dead organic matter (DOM) C and validating DOM C is still insufficient. Accordingly, we estimated the C stocks and balances of both biomass and DOM C during 1954–2012 using a~process-based model, the Korean Forest Soil Carbon model, and the 5th Korean National Forest Inventory (NFI) report. Validation processes were also conducted based on the 5th NFI and statistical data. Simulation results showed that the biomass C stocks increased from 36.4 to 440.4 Tg C and sequestered C at a rate of 7.0 Tg C yr−1 during 1954–2012. The DOM C stocks increased from 386.0 to 463.1 Tg C and sequestered C at a rate of 1.3 Tg C yr−1 during the same period. The estimates of biomass and DOM C stocks agreed well with observed C stock data. The annual net biome production (NBP) during 1954–2012 was 141.3 g C m−2 yr−1, which increased from −8.8 to 436.6 g C m−2 yr−1 in 1955 and 2012, respectively. Compared to forests in other countries and global forests, the annual C sink rate of South Korean forests was much lower, but the NBP was much higher. Our results could provide the forest C dynamics in South Korean forests before and after the onset of reforestation programs.

AbstractTwo hundred and ten specimens of Cetrelia collected in Belarus in 1954-2012 were examined based on morphological and chemical characters. Three closely related species of Cetrelia (C. cetrarioides, C. monachorum and C. olivetorum) were identified in this study. The ecological notes and distribution maps of the detected species in Belarus were provided and their conservation status was discussed.

Resumen

The medieval monastery at Ghazali in Sudan was excavated in part by the Sudan Antiquities Service in 1953 and 1954, and is one of the best preserved archaeological sites in the country. A new project of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw, and the National Corporation of Antiquities and Museums of Sudan revisited the ruins with a site presentation project coupled with excavation geared to bringing out a final publication of the remains, which are of utmost importance for studies of medieval Nubian history. Site surveying (including geophysics) and mapping occupied most of the short season in 2012, but some unexpected discoveries were also made.

Resumen

The right to a nationality is well established in international human rights law. In 1954 and 1961, the United Nations adopted the Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, respectively. Inspired by Article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the two Conventions provide for a right to nationality and prohibit deprivation or denial of nationality. In 2012, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) drafted four guidelines on statelessness that expand on provisions of the 1954 and 1961 UN Conventions. They contain guidance sections directed specifically at governments, civil society organizations, legal practitioners, decision-makers and the judiciary as well as UNHCR and other UN agency staff involved in addressing statelessness.

Resumen

Gonadal steroid hormone feedback is impaired in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism and an associated increase in LH pulse frequency. Using a prenatal androgen (PNA)-treated mouse model of PCOS, we aimed to investigate negative and positive feedback effects of estrogens on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis regulation of LH. PNA-treated mice exhibited severely disrupted estrous cycles, hyperandrogenism, significantly reduced fertility, and altered ovarian morphology. To assess the negative feedback effects of estrogens, LH was measured before and after ovariectomy and after estradiol (E2) administration. Compared with controls, PNA-treated mice exhibited a blunted postcastration rise in LH (P < .001) and an absence of LH suppression after E2 administration. To assess E2-positive feedback, control and PNA-treated GnRH-green fluorescent protein transgenic mice were subjected to a standard ovariectomy with E2-replacement regimen, and both plasma and perfusion-fixed brains were collected at the time of the expected GnRH/LH surge. Immunocytochemistry and confocal imaging of cFos and green fluorescent protein were used to assess GnRH neuron activation and spine density. In the surged group, both control and PNA-treated mice had significantly increased LH and cFos activation in GnRH neurons (P < .05) compared with nonsurged animals. Spine density was quantified in cFos-positive and -negative GnRH neurons to examine whether there was an increase in spine density in cFos-expressing GnRH neurons of surged mice as expected. A significant increase in spine density in cFos-expressing GnRH neurons was evident in control animals; however, no significant increase was observed in the PNA-treated mice because spine density was elevated across all GnRH neurons. These data support that PNA treatment results in a PCOS-like phenotype that includes impaired E2-negative feedback. Additionally, although E2-positive feedback capability is retained in PNA mice, elevated GnRH neuron spine density may reflect altered synaptic regulation.

Leaf–folding frogs of the genus Afrixalus comprise 33 species across South-East, Central and West Africa (Frost 2018) with tadpoles being described for Afrixalus aureus Pickersgill, A. delicatus Pickersgill, A. dorsalis (Peters), A. fornassinii (Bianconi), A. fulvovittatus (Cope), A. laevis (Ahl), A. morerei Dubois, A. nigeriensis Schiøtz, A. spinifrons (Cope), A. stuhlmanni (Pfeffer), A. uluguruensis (Barbour & Loveridge), A. vibekensis Schiøtz, A. vittiger Peters, and A. weidholzi (Mertens) (see Pickersgill 2005; Channing et al. 2012). Members of the genus have a unique approach to egg deposition, laying their eggs on soft-leaved hydrophytes. The male folds or rolls the leaf with his hind legs into a sheath following oviposition and fertilisation (Rose 1950; Wager 1954; Du Preez & Carruthers 2017), excreting an adhesive substance and enclosing the eggs within while the “glue” cures (Rose 1950, Wager 1954, authors pers. obs.).

Since 1954, the Delaware River has been managed under the framework of a Supreme Court decree and the subsequent concomitant intergovernmental collaboration between New York State, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York City (NYC) and the US federal government. Taking an environmental perspective, we review the evolution of water release policies for three NYC reservoirs from the issuance of the 1954 decree through the implementation of the Flexible Flow Management Program (FFMP) of 2007–2015 and examine the policies' impact on the upper Delaware River. We describe governmental and institutional constraints on the development of Delaware water policy and show how modifications of release policies have enhanced aquatic habitat and ecological health in the upper Delaware while reliably delivering water to NYC and the Delaware's other principal stakeholders. We describe the development of the FFMP in 2006, its subsequent modification, and its augmentation by NYC's Operations Support Tool in 2012. Finally, we discuss the negative ecological consequences of the 2010–2016 stalemate on Delaware water policy resulting from conflicts between the decree parties about current and future water rights, and how the stalemate derives partially from the decision structure imposed by the 1954 decree and the Good Faith Agreement of 1983.

Resumen

Shenzhen city was a farmland region before 1978, and it then developed to a mega city in China. This type of change in city can greatly affect the climatic conditions. In this study, the daily, monthly, and annual climatic variables and the reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) for Shenzhen from 1954 to 2012 were computed using the FAO Penman-Monteith equation (PM), and these parameters were analyzed to study the temporal trends of ET0and meteorological factors. The trends and the time points of abrupt changes of ET0and meteorological factors were tested using Mann-Kendall methods. Results show that, in the past 59 years, the annual ET0first decreased from 1954 to 1978, then increased from 1979 to 1990, and now varied slightly after 1990. The mean air temperature rose gradually, and the relative humidity decreased as a whole. These trends finally resulted in an increasing trend in vapor pressure deficit (VPD). The wind speed showed a slightly decreasing trend. Both the annual total sunshine duration and net radiation showed trends of rapid decline. ET0change is sensitive to the hours of sunshine and VPD. The significant increase in ET0after 1979 was mainly due to the increased air temperature and decreased relative humidity.
