Resumen
Long-bodied polynoids, like Polyeunoa laevis McIntosh, 1885 and similar species which are often associated with cold-water corals, are regularly reported from Antarctic, Subantarctic and adjacent cold-temperate waters. The taxonomy ofthese species is confused and has been subject to various discussions in the past. For the revision presented here weexamined the available type material and additional specimens of the following species: Polynoe antarctica Kinberg,1858, Polyeunoa laevis McIntosh, 1885, Enipo rhombigera Ehlers, 1908, Hololepidella flynni Benham, 1921, Polyeunoedubia Hartmann-Schröder, 1965, Polyeunoa monroi Averincev, 1978, and Polynoe thouarellicola Hartmann-Schröder,1989. As a result we consider Polyeunoa laevis McIntosh, 1885, Parapolyeunoa flynni (Benham, 1921) n. comb., andNeopolynoe antarctica (Kinberg, 1858) n. comb. as valid species. Enipo rhombigera Ehlers, 1908, Polyeunoe dubiaHartmann-Schröder, 1965, and Polynoe thouarellicola Hartmann-Schröder, 1989 are junior synonyms of Polyeunoalaevis. Polyeunoa monroi Averincev, 1978 is a junior synonym of Hololepidella flynni Benham, 1921 for which the newgenus Parapolyeunoa n. gen. is erected. Polynoe antarctica Kinberg, 1858 is transferred to the genus NeopolynoeLoshamn, 1981 and represents the third known species within this genus. Three comprehensive tables illustrating the distinctive characters of the considered genera and species are given to facilitate the identification of the valid species.Keywordstaxonomy, Polyeunoa, Parapolyeunoa n. gen., Neopolynoe, Southern Ocean, SOAP workshop, cold-water corals

"Syzygial brachials from the upper Muschelkalk (Middle Triassic, Ladinian) of Poland and their implication for an early origin of comatulid crinoids". Resumen
According to Ubaghs (1978), syzygies are brachial articulations in which radiating ridges and furrows on the two joint faces oppose each other rather than interlock as in symplexies. Cryptosyzygies differ from syzygies by having very short ridges that may be replaced by rows of tubercles or granules, with a tendency toward irregular arrangement and disappearance. Among Triassic crinoids, only representatives of the orders Isocrinida Sieverts-Doreck, 1952 and Comatulida Clark, 1908 had cryptosyzygial or syzygial brachial articulation, respectively. According to Rasmussen (1978), among Isocrinidae the articulations of primibrachial 1 and 2 and secundibrachial 1 and 2 were cryptosyzygial or synarthrial (but see also comments in Simms, 1988a). Among Comatulida, syzygial articulations generally occur between brachials 3 and 4 and in more distal arm parts.

Resumen
The appointment of Arthur Cecil Pigou as Alfred Marshall's successor has generated some interest among historians of economic thought (Coase 1972; Coats 1971; and Jones 1978). All agree that the 1908 election was highly political, affected by Marshall's intense efforts to manipulate the process in favor of Pigou and against Herbert S. Foxwell. T. W. Jones sheds light on “the lengths to which Marshall felt able to go in his support of Pigou and, in particular, the manner in which this impinged on one of the electors in 1908, J. N. Keynes” (Jones 1978, p. 235). This is interesting in the wake of John Neville Keynes's many conflicting roles: he was an elector, a friend of Foxwell, and father of John Maynard Keynes, who had failed to secure a Fellowship at King's College earlier that year. Regardless of the motives behind Marshall's maneuvers or the manner in which he accomplished his objective, the outcome of the election left Foxwell extremely, but understandably, disappointed and embittered. Some of this disappointment and bitterness must have been felt toward Marshall's successor, Pigou, of whom Foxwell did not think very highly to begin with. On different occasions, Foxwell had thought Pigou to be “an extreme agitator on a side not popular either here [Cambridge] or among influential people in the country”; “the last Economist I wish to see in any position where he could influence economic study. He has ruined it at Cambridge where complaints are incessant”; and “worse than useless”.

Andre hermant began his career in the middle of the thirties, the period when the modernists avant-garde architects competed with the strong tendencies of a return to academism and regionalism. Graduated from + l'ecole speciale d'architecture ;, hermant clearly displayed his interest for the modernism. Before the war, he devoted his time almost exclusively to creating stands for exhibitions but also contributed actively with essays and technical management to the review l'architecture d'aujourd'hui, thereby making this magazine a journal of the architectural avant-garde. During the war, hermant chose to take the unofficial management of a new journal, techniques et architecture, until 1945. Having thus got into conflict with the editorial staff of l'architecture d'aujourd'hui, hermant lost precious relations and practically gave up publishing. The reconstruction after the war gave him finally the opportunity to work as an architect : in le havre, he joined the staff of auguste perret, and after that in beauvais and in troyes. Very interested in designing collective housing, hermant showed that he was a follower of le corbusier, especially in his town planning projects. During the fifties, hermant sought to resuscitate the + union des artistes modernes ; by forming the association + formes utiles ;. However, he took part in agitated debates, witch made him at last give up his ideas about allowing everyone to have a good functional housing, both in good taste and not expensive. He then turned himself to the museums where his capacity to create exhibition-rooms in a new radical spirit, gave him numerous commissions until the seventies. Andre hermant was an architect and town planner who is inspired by perret and le corbusier, but whose works and thoughts went beyond the strict adaptation of the established schools in his endeavour to achieve a synthesis of modernism

Elhadj Mamadou Bâ, illiterate shepherd too the age of sixteen, breaks with the shepherd trade in favor of Koranic school where after four years of study, he memorized the entire Quran. Thirsty of knowledge, he went with a Moorish marabout with whom in four years of study, he obtained his master's degree in Quran and expatriated in Saudi Arabia for further studies that will complete six years later by a diploma, the highest in Islamic science. Scholar imbued with progressive ideas, he decided in 1940 to return to Africa to withdraw his people of ignorance. On the field, he met with major obstacles, since the colon and the magician marabout, feeling threatened by his reform, allied to bar his way, in vain. Convinced that only knowledge liberates, Mahmoudou Bâ created his modern school in Djeol, his hometown in 1941 and did the same in all French West Africa (AOF). In 1962, he became responsible for teaching Arabic in Mauritania; he could control his national and international schools that have contributed to the influence of universal civilization, the decline of ignorance and cultural opening up of West and Central, Africa

In the first half of the twentieth century, with the changes that permeated the national and global context, brazilian culture has undergone an upgrade process led by personalities that defined national history. The consequences of World War II boosted the arrival to Brazil from foreign artists such as Ziembinski, which played an important role in the movement of aesthetic update that was announced since the 1920s. Ziembinski's path is usually confused with theater modern history itself since he was involved in major projects of the 1940s and 1950s. The purpose of this research is to analyze how was its legitimacy on the national scene, both by critics of Décio de Almeida Prado, another exponent of dramatic criticism and a renewing of their practice among us, as well as the testimony of his contemporaries

Hayes, Kalmia Joy. "Thematic integrity in filmic versions of E.M. Forster's novels". Thesis, Rhodes University, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002261.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study discusses the extent to which Charles Sturridge's Where Angels Fear to Tread, Merchant Ivory's Howards End, and David Lean's A Passage to India have aimed at, and succeeded in, exploring the thematic concerns of E.M. Forster's novels. A brief introductory chapter explains the motivation behind this research, and the choice of critical methodologies used. It concludes with an outline of some of the problems confronting film-makers wishing to explore the concerns of novels. The first chapter, which is devoted to Where Angels Fear to Tread, reveals that while Sturridge is "faithful" to Forster's novel at a superficial level, basing most of his scenes on, and taking most of his dialogue directly from, the text, he does not explore Forster's themes. The facility with which film tells stories proves to be a treacherous trap for Sturridge. His version of Where Angels Fear to Tread is totally vacuous because he failed to develop anything beyond the story -- Forster's "tapeworm" of time (Aspects of the NoyeI41). The causality that Forster calls plot seemed beyond Sturridge's comprehension, leaving his film little more than an endless progression of "and then[s]" (Forster, Aspects 87). Characters are not given their full weight; symbols and leitmotifs are overlooked; the allegorical elements he did recognize, he failed to understand, and thus misplaced, so that the epiphanic moments of the novel are lost. There is no possibility of thematic concerns emerging from a film in which plot, characterization, symbol and rhythm are ignored. Sturridge's apparent inability to understand his source is in stark contrast to Merchant Ivory's sensitivity to Howards End, and their evident familiarity with literary criticism on the work. Chapter two explores the way in which their adaptation smooths out putative flaws in characterization and plot, and uses filmic rhythm and camera work to suggest comments made by the novel's narrator. Almost wholly successful in developing the novel's themes, Merchant Ivory's Howards End does not, however, successfully explore the spiritual dimensions of Forster's novel. Film is a medium capable of great subtlety, but its strength lies in its ability to capture the seen; the unseen tends to evade its grasp. It is in dealing with the unseen that Lean's A Passage to India misses greatness, for in virtually every other respect his version of Forster's masterpiece is superb. Chapter three explores Lean's creative and flexible approach to adaptation, his acute sensitivity to the differing demands of film and novel, and his confident technical mastery. It also explores, however, the emptiness at the heart of his film, an emptiness that is the result of his trivialization of the spiritual concerns of Forster's novel.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This study presents a dialogue between works of Brazilian writers working in the seventies, during the post-64 military dictatorship, and previous books by writers whose works are located within the twentieth century. It seeks to expose the productive relationship, intrinsic to their aesthetic, formal and thematic achievement, that these novels establish amongst themselves and the broader significance of this relationship in terms of criticism and literary historiography. The writers addressed are Machado de Assis, Graciliano Ramos, Guimarães Rosa, Clarice Lispector, Antonio Callado, Osman Lins and João Ubaldo Ribeiro. The fundamental theoretical basis for the study of these relationships is based on the work of Erich Auerbach and Brazilian scholars such as Antonio Candido.

This research aims at understanding Objectivist poets and poetics, considered as the nexus from which to analyse the theoretical and formal questions that matter to English and American modernist poetry. As a groundbreaking movement taking place in the thirties, Objectivism first gathers American poets such as Louis Zukofsky, Charles Reznikoff, George Oppen, Carl Rakosi and Lorine Niedecker, as well as English poet Basil Bunting. We choose to add to these the name of William Carlos Williams, both their predecessor and a long-time companion. The meaning of this work lies in the Objectivists going back to the basis of a poetics, and hence the need for new tools required to understand their texts. We propose to help develop a thinking enabling the reader to enter this specific poetical field, by analysing the new definitions, the various manipulations and the interplay with tradition that the Objectivists have produced. Their innovations concern such essential notions such as the poetic voice and its relation to the speaking subject in the poem; rhythm and the graphic quality of the written text as inducing a possibly new prosody; and the logic of the sign within the frame of a transformed experience of language and speech, from the point of view of the reading of the text

This thesis is about the depth of colonisation through translation. I develop an analytic framework that explores colonisation and translation using the trope of romantic love and an experimental textual construction incorporating translation and historical reconstruction. Utilising both the first and the final drafts of “Chapter X, Songs of Human Beauty and Love-charms” in Songs of Central Australia, by T. Strehlow, I show how that text, written over thirty years and comprised of nine drafts, can be described as a translation mediated by the colonising syntax and grammar. My interest lies in developing a novel textual technique to attempt to illustrate this problem so as to allow an insight into the perspective of a colonised person. This has involved a re-examination of translation as something other than a transtemporal structure predicated on direct equivalence, understanding it instead as something that fictionalises and reinvents the language that it purports to represent. It begins by establishing an understanding of the historical context in which the translated text is situated, from both objective and personal viewpoints, and then foregrounds the grammatical perspective of the argument. Utilising the techniques and processes of multiple translation, Internet-based translation software, creative writing and historical reconstruction, it continues to consider the role of imagination and begins the construction of a visceral argument whereby the reader is encouraged to experience a cognitive shift similar to that understood by the colonised other, which is revealed in a fictional autobiography written by an imagined other. It concludes by considering the coloniser within the same context, using, as an example T. Strehlow, who had a unique understanding of the Arrernte language. Tracking his extensive alterations, revisions and excisions within his drafts of Chapter X, this thesis traces a textual history of change, theorising that the translator, no matter how "authentic", is as much translated by the text as she or he is a translator of the text.

Pierre Legendre adopts a structuralist point of view in his studies. Our project is to establish – with the help of different cultures – a position more dynamics to deconstruct three sorts of stereotypes : – First, the stereotype as an obstacle between me and the others (social dimension) ; – the stereotype as a hitch between me and the Other (spiritual dimension) ; – and, finally, stereotype as an obstacle between me and me. As we can see, this question is deeply ethical and concerns the roots of the psychoanalysis

Resumen
